Master P Talks No Limit Records, 2010 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors'

'There's no such thing as too much music,' the Dirty South honoree recalls of how he ran pioneering record label.

At its zenith, Master P's No Limit Records was cranking out albums like a factory and collecting plaques that matched the gold and platinum tanks that dangled from P's chains. His business plan was simple, succinct and, to some, foolish.

These days, however, P is hailed as a pioneer for his decision to flood the market — beginning in the early 1990s — with a steady stream of his own albums, as well as projects by Tru, Mia X and a bevy of New Orleans talent. His business acumen helped pave the way for Cash Money, Young Money, Grand Hustle and a host of Southern labels.

For his groundbreaking impact, P will be among those feted at the 2010 "VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South,", joining Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder J Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew and Outkast producers Organized Noize. The show, set to be taped at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom, airs Monday, June 7, at 9 p.m. ET on VH1.

"When it comes down to putting out records, people are afraid. They say, 'I don't want to put out too many records,' " P told MTV News when we caught up with him during rehearsals for "Hip Hop Honors" on Wednesday (June 2). The No Limit founder recalled that his aggressive output was controversial at the time, but he had his reasons for pushing forward.

"My thing was, with No Limit, when you're hot, you're hot, you give 'em whatever you can give 'em," P said. "That's what I teach my family: When you got 'em, give it to 'em, 'cause when you got a fanbase, feed that fanbase. There's no such thing as too much music. We accomplished something that nobody did, to be able to sell 75 million records independently and to be honored for hip-hop is a blessing and lets you know we been dong the right thing."

Master P will be celebrated with performances by his son Romeo, Silkk the Shocker, Trina, Mystikal and Gucci Mane, with Kid Capri manning the turntables during the medley.

Meanwhile, P has been revving up for the next incarnation of No Limit. He's dubbed himself the "Archie Manning of hip-hop," with his two rapper sons, Romeo and Valentino, standing in for Eli and Peyton. And P's younger brother Silkk is still carrying the torch; his next release is due this summer.

Silkk told MTV News he's had the best seat from which to witness his brother's success, and getting to pay him back with a performance is "amazing."

"With me, first of all, shouts out to him, 'cause I got to see greatness for a long time," Silkk said. "It's very good to finally see him get honored for it. And then, I think a lot of people out there also appreciate what he's done. I perform all the time, but to actually perform and give back to him and show him what he means to us, that's amazing for me."

'VH1 Hip Hop Honors' Producers Discuss Their 'Dirty South' Selections

Some have criticized the 2010 honorees for who was included or omitted.

The executive producers of "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" have responded to various Southern rap pioneers who have criticized the production for its 2010 selections, which include Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder J Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, Master P and Outkast producers Organized Noise.

"We try to pick people from different eras, whether it was closer to the beginning or from the late '80s into the '90s," Fab Five Freddy said of the process, which has drawn criticism from Suave House Records founder Tony Draper and rappers Scarface and Uncle Luke. "And people that carved out specific lanes and styles in the music."

The onetime "Yo! MTV Raps" host and writer Nelson George, who have overseen each show since its inception, admitted that every show will have detractors. "I don't know if you do anything with hip-hop and not have people speak up," George said in an interview posted on VH1.com.

George said that for every person upset with the process, there are just as many people satisfied, noting that fans of Timbaland or Rap-A-Lot Records will see their favorites.

"Depending on where your point of view is [coming from], the show works," he said. "They say all politics are local, all hip-hop is too. People want their place represented."

Draper has voiced his displeasure in several interviews, saying the process is flawed if only one act or person that represents each facet of Southern hip-hop is selected. Luke felt he alone should be recognized for his endeavors, not the 2 Live Crew collective with whom he worked only on a limited basis. Scarface lashed out over what he perceived was an oversight since his group, the Geto Boys, were omitted, although the influential rappers were signed to Rap-A-Lot.

George suggested fans celebrate the moment and those that will actually be feted, a diverse group that they sought to honor the region's successes. Fab Five Freddy defended himself and his production partner, both native New Yorkers, overseeing a show that honors "The Dirty South."

The two were also criticized for their lack of credentials below the Mason-Dixon Line, however, Freddy dismissed that particular barb and UGK's Bun B also defended the production.

"With 'Yo! MTV' and with my curious nature, I got an opportunity to go to these other places where these new forms or new artists where emerging," Freddy said. "So many people have gone with me to Liberty City in Miami to see what the 2 Live Crew was really about, to go to the 5th Ward in Texas to see the Geto Boys and, of course, most people's favorite show, the ride on the flatbed truck through Compton with N.W.A. I got to share those experiences with a lot of other people to show it's not just about us in [New York], it's cats in Philly and other places that are making viable music with a unique culture. 'Hip Hop Honors' is still trying to do that thing. Let's take people places and really show them and help them understand where it comes from and give props to the people that paved the way."

'VH1 Hip Hop Honors' Puts Spotlight On 'Dirty South' Pioneers

Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and recently ousted "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Chad Ochocinco will be among the performers and presenters at this year's "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" festivities, recognizing "The Dirty South."

The show is set to be taped June 3 at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom and air Monday, June 7, at 9 p.m. on VH1.

For the first time since the production's inception, a new host will take the reins, as "Hot Tub Time Machine" star Craig Robinson steps into Tracy Morgan's unlaced Adidas shell-top sneakers. Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder J Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, Master P and Outkast producers Organize Noise will be this year's honorees.

This is the second year in a row "Hip Hop Honors" centers on a theme; last year, Def Jam Records was honored. The production also returns to Hammerstein Ballroom after a one-year absence. Last year's taping occurred at the BAM Theater in Brooklyn, New York.

A slew of performers and presenters were announced Wednesday (May 19), including Bun B, Paul Wall, Kelly Rowland, Pitbull, Kid Rock, Taraji P. Henson, Trick Daddy, Mystikal, Plies, Slim Thug, David Banner, Danny Glover, Eddie Griffin and NFL star Terrell Owens, among others.

In past years, Snoop Dogg and the Wu-Tang Clan were feted, as were icons ranging from Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One and Run-DMC.

Four years ago, the ladies took center stage during the show, as Lil' Kim and MC Lyte rallied their female counterparts, including Remy Ma and Da Brat, for a memorable performance.

C-Murder Pleads No Contest in Baton Rouge Murder Case

Rapper and brother of Master P could face 10 years on combined cases.

Master P's brother, rapper C-Murder, plead no contest on Wednesday (May 27) to multiple counts of attempted second-degree murder charges stemming from a 2001 incident in a Baton Rouge nightclub, according to a local ABC news affiliate.

WBRZ in Louisiana reported that prosecutors will recommend a 10-year sentence for Miller, who is also facing an unrelated, separate murder charge elsewhere in his home state.

The artist, who later changed his name to C-Miller and was born Corey Miller, was scheduled to go to court for the Baton Rouge case this week. But attorneys representing Miller announced the no contest plea in court today. The rapper will be sentenced to jail in 90 days.

According to police reports, Miller allegedly pulled a gun out on a bouncer and the owner of Club Raggs, a north Baton Rouge establishment. Police said Miller pulled the gun and attempted to shoot the owner, Norman Sparrow, but his weapon jammed. Miller then fled the scene before later being arrested.

According to the New Orleans Time-Picayune, Miller is still slated to face trial for a 2002 incident in Jefferson Parrish where the rapper is accused of killing a 16-year-old boy.

Miller has served time in home confinement for the same case after being convicted in 2003. The Lousiana Supreme Court, however, ordered a new trial after agreeing with a lower court that said the jury in Miller's case should have been made aware of the background of witnesses who testified against the rapper.

Miller's retrial is scheduled to begin August 3 in the Jefferson Parish case and he is set to be sentenced August 25 in the Baton Rogue case. He will remain jailed until his next trial.

Mariah Carey got a win in court last week when a federal judge decided that a copyright-infringement case against her had no merit. Singer Rachele Chafir had sued Carey in April 2006, claiming that Carey's hit "It's Like That" was copied from her song "Sexy" and lifted key pieces, including the music, for the chorus. Chafir, who copyrighted the song in 2004, claimed Carey had access to "Sexy" since it was available on a Web site, but U.S. District Court Judge Kimba Wood decided that wasn't proof Carey or her collaborators had gone to the Web site or lifted the material, which wasn't "strikingly similar" enough to be considered infringement. With "no genuine issues of material fact," Wood closed the case. "It was the right decision," Carey's lawyer Ilene Farkas told MTV News. "The record was clear in this case." Meanwhile, Carey is moving on with her yet-untitled follow-up to The Emancipation of Mimi, which her record label confirmed is now due December 4. ...

Going, going ... to Cooperstown. And with an asterisk on it. Baseball star Barry Bonds' record-breaking home-run ball, which was purchased two weeks ago in an online auction by hip-hop fashion mogul Marc Ecko, will be heading to the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum after all. Ecko bought the ball and launched a Web site giving fans the chance to vote on the ball's final destination: outer space or to Cooperstown, with or without an asterisk signifying Bonds' alleged steroid use in helping him become the all-time home-run king. The announcement was made Wednesday morning (September 26) on the "Today" show after a week of voting. According to Vote756.com, over 10 million votes were cast, of which 47 percent chose to send the tagged ball to the famed baseball museum. ...

The twisted saga of the investigation into the unsolved 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. took another turn this week when Waymond Anderson, an inmate serving life for murder, recanted testimony in which he had implicated the Los Angeles Police Department in the rapper's murder. The Los Angeles Times reports that Anderson said in a recent deposition that he lied about LAPD involvement as part of a "scam" cooked up with two other convicts to get a big monetary settlement from the city of Los Angeles. Most shockingly, Anderson accused the rapper's family — which has filed a wrongful-death suit seeking damages from the city — and its lawyer of taking part in the scheme and offering to pay him a percentage of the settlement for false testimony against the LAPD. In the August 20 testimony, Anderson said he had never met the officers he implicated, despite earlier statements in which he described conversations with the two disgraced ex-LAPD cops. A lawyer for Biggie's family, Perry Sanders, called Anderson's allegations "100 percent, demonstrably false," adding yet another twist to the already-knotted-up story by saying that Anderson appeared to be changing his story at the behest of Chuck Philips, a Times reporter who has written extensively about the murder investigation and has questioned the theory of LAPD involvement. Phillips and the Times dismissed the allegations. ...

In other Biggie news, the recently released documentary "The Notorious B.I.G.: Bigger Than Life" follows the rapper's life from his early days to his death with interviews from many of the behind-the-scenes music-industry figures and friends who watched the rapper rise from a street-corner hustler to one of the biggest rap stars in the world. The film also features several minutes of previously unreleased footage shot by a bystander of the scene on the night Biggie was gunned down. The fan's video — which director Peter Spirer ("Beef," "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel") said has been reviewed by authorities — doesn't capture the moment Biggie's car was shot at, but it does have audio of the shots and shaky footage of the chaotic aftermath. ...

Embattled football player Michael Vick is facing stricter release conditions after testing positive for marijuana earlier this month, The Associated Press reports. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson imposed the new conditions, which include restricting Vick to his home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. with electronic monitoring and making him submit to random drug tests. He was ordered to continue participating in substance-abuse and mental-health counseling. Vick was put under pretrial release supervision in July, and the restrictions included refraining from the use of narcotic drugs or other controlled substances. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback, who pleaded guilty in August to federal dogfighting charges, is awaiting sentencing December 10 — and Vick's violation of the conditions of his release could be taken into consideration by the judge. He faces up to five years in prison for the federal charges, and has been indicted on additional state charges in Virginia as well. ...

A second woman has filed a lawsuit against Lil Wayne over a melee that broke out during one of his shows at Morgan State University in Baltimore in October. According to an AP story, Carlisa Dixon said she was impaled on a metal pole after the crowd surged to snatch up money that was being tossed from the stage. Dixon is seeking $1 million from Wayne's record label and touring companies, and another $1 million from the university, claiming she underwent surgery for a puncture wound as a result of the crowd surge. A lawsuit was filed in August by another woman who claimed she was trampled in the same money-throwing incident. A spokesperson for Wayne could not be reached for comment at press time. ...

A man died at a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Monday night in what police think may have been a crowd-surfing or moshing accident. The Canadian Press reports that Vancouver police say the man was unconscious when he was dragged out of the crowd at the Pacific National Exhibition Forum during the show and worked on by first-aid personnel on site before being transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have ruled out foul play. ... The Voodoo Music Experience is shifting locations, but just slightly. The fest, to take place October 26-28, has a new site in New Orleans City Park to accommodate ongoing restoration and improvement of the park. The shift brings the fest closer to Tad Gormley Stadium, where Voodoo was first held in 1999. ...

Do you march to Nelly's beat? The rapper is cobbling together a marching band for his performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards on October 13. Auditions will be held Sunday starting at 11 a.m. in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New Orleans and St. Louis, and Nelly is looking for girls who can play drums, tri-toms, bass drum, tuba or trumpet. Prospective players need to know how to perform his song "Grillz" and move to the beat of the song while playing their instruments. Final auditions will be held October 8 in Atlanta, and those who can't make the auditions in person can post a one-minute video clip on Nelly's drum-line-audition site. ... If you've been doubting Swizz Beatz's fashion sense, think again — Gap has tapped the hugely popular producer for its spring ad campaign. ...

VH1 Rock Docs picked up its first Emmy win on Monday as "DMC: My Adoption Journey" earned the award for News & Documentary Emmy for Outstanding Arts & Culture Programming. The program, which revolves around the Run-DMC member's search for his birth mother, premiered in February 2006 and will re-air on VH1 on Saturday at 10 p.m. ... Have you already imported Babyface's Playlist into your own playlist? Then mark you calendar — the singer is putting together a tour in support of his recently released LP. Babyface will play a gig in the Philippines on October 13, followed by a stretch in Japan; after that he'll hit Oakland, California, on November 23, and Sparks, Nevada, the following day. ...

During a recent visit to "The Howard Stern Show," Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx spoke out about drummer Tommy Lee and his apparent departure from the band. He told Stern that Lee quit, and Sixx blamed the current legal problems the band is having with one of its former managers for the turmoil. Sixx said that, since Lee isn't the Crüe's frontman or chief songwriter, the band should be fine without him. He added that he harbors no ill will toward Lee. ... Snow Patrol keyboardist Tom Simpson was expected to appear in court in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday to answer to drug-possession charges filed against him this summer. While the charges weren't dropped, the prosecution doesn't intend on taking "further action," meaning the charges will either have to be re-raised again or dropped altogether. ...

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard's side project Brad are getting back together for a one-night-only show on October 17 at New York's Webster Hall. The benefit event will also feature Billy Bragg and be hosted by Tim Robbins. It is being held to support Woody and Marjorie Guthrie, and the 40th anniversary of the Huntington's Disease Society of America, which was founded by Marjorie. ... Kanye West's Graduation is proving to be quite the bear. The album leads with 781,000 copies sold over the 603,000 moved by 50 Cent's Curtis according to projections, Billboard reports. "It's just a few days out," Fiddy told the news outlet, qualifying the numbers. He said the music industry "would consider me to be a hip-hop favorite because of my sales history, and people like to root for the underdog." He also took some time Thursday to sound off about Sunday's VMAs on New York's Hot 97, saying he was shorted compared to 'Ye — even though West has also been complaining he didn't get enough airtime during the show. Fif also managed to take a swipe at his record label, Interscope, during the VMA rant: "As far as the VMAs were concerned, Kanye received the upper hand. I ain't going to front. He had four looks — his song 'Stronger,' his new record 'Good Life,' he had a performance with Soulja Boy, 'Crank [That],' and then he came out with me. So I feel like Def Jam is doing a better job of promoting the CD than Interscope. Interscope is just relying on my base and the actual music. I was on the VMAs for one minute and 20 seconds. I should've just stayed home." ...

Last weekend, Britney Spears had the VMAs to worry about — this weekend, it's her kids. On Friday (September 14), a Los Angeles Superior Court judge postponed making a ruling on whether court documents relating to the singer's divorce and custody case with ex-husband Kevin Federline should be sealed or open to the public. "Access Hollywood" and People magazine were among the media outlets representing the public's interests. Outside the courtroom, Spears' divorce attorney Laura Wasser spoke to reporters, telling them this is a frustrating time for the singer. "I think she just wants to be a mom," Wasser told reporters, "and both of her kids' birthdays are this week, and I think she would've liked to celebrate with them without having to worry about the entire nation — the entire world — being concerned about what's going on with her personally and her custody battle with Mr. Federline." On Monday, the judge will hear Federline's order to show cause for primary physical custody of the couple's two children: Sean Preston, who turned 2 on Friday; and Jayden James, who turned 1 on Wednesday. ...

Earlier this week, the "American Idol" judges had at Britney Spears' VMA performance — now "Dancing With the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba is following suit. "When I watched it, I think they gave her a great place to make a comeback," she told Newsweek. "It was more mature than we've seen in the past. The thing that was unfortunate is that the center of the performance was Britney, and she was only giving about 30 percent. That's why it fell short. The backup dancers focused all the energy right to Britney, and she was the weakest link. ... I think fear got the best of her." ... Jamie Foxx got a place on Hollywood's Walk of Fame on Friday, and when he chatted with reporters at the induction ceremony, he inevitably gave his two cents on Spears' performance. A fire broke out at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Friday afternoon, injuring four people, according to Austin360.com. The flames erupted inside a trailer located behind the beverage-vendor tents between two of the festival stages, and Pete Yorn's set was stopped as the fire was extinguished. All four people were transported to Brackenridge Hospital, and two are in critical condition. ...

Madonna, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher attended a Kabbalah conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Friday to celebrate the Jewish New Year, according to The Associated Press. She reportedly didn't speak with the media, and the conference was closed to TV cameras. ... Master P visited Monroe Middle School in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday and spoke to roughly 800 students about the importance of education, good financial management and a vision for success, AP reports. The rapper was approached by math teacher Bonnie Mwanda, who reportedly heard he would be in town and thought his success might be an inspiration for her students, many of whom come from similar backgrounds as the hip-hop mogul. "If the principal tells me y'all have a good year, I'm going to bring Romeo back to do a concert," he told the students, according to AP. ...

Fred Durst has been keeping a relatively low profile these days, but the Limp Bizkit frontman was given a 120-day suspended jail sentence after pleading no contest to seven misdemeanors way back on August 16, AP reports. He was also ordered to perform 20 hours of community service and fined $1,500 for assault, battery and reckless driving, for deliberately hitting two people with his car in Los Angeles in October 2006. Moreover, Durst was hit with a restraining order, is not allowed within 100 yards of the two victims — whose names have not been revealed — and cannot possess a firearm. ...

Elton John made a surprise appearance onstage during a Prince concert at London's O2 arena Thursday night. BBC News reports that John joined Prince for a cover of the Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road." After the two-hour-plus show, Prince ducked into the O2's smaller theater and played another two-hour gig, which included covers of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and another Beatles song, "Come Together." ... Led Zeppelin fans are getting more time for a chance at tickets to see the band perform a one-off reunion gig November 26 at London's O2 arena. Organizers behind the concert — a tribute to late music icon Ahmet Ertegun — are extending the lottery-application process to Wednesday, Billboard reports. The Web site set up to handle registrations received 89.5 million attempts in a 12-hour period on Thursday, according to the news outlet. ...

Members of underground-rock heroes Shudder to Think will reconvene for a one-off gig at New York's Mercury Lounge on Monday, Pitchfork reports. Frontman Craig Wedren and guitarist Nathan Larson — whose conflicts were part of the reason the band broke up in the late '90s — will get together with drummer Kevin March for the gig, although bassist Stuart Hill will not be accompanying them. ... Glassjaw have booked three California dates for next month. The reunited band will play October 28 in Hollywood; October 29 in San Diego; and October 30 in Pomona, California. ... Iconic punk band Operation Ivy's 1991 self-titled compilation LP will be reissued on November 6 on Hellcat. The classic release has been remastered and will also be available for download for the first time. ... PJ Harvey's White Chalk album has shifted from a September 25 release date to October 2. ...

AT&T's Blue Room, the site where political comments made by Pearl Jam during Lollapalooza were censored a month ago, has announced a new policy to avoid repeating that controversial practice during its webcast of this weekend's Austin City Limits Music Festival. According to AT&T spokesperson Steven Schwadron, "AT&T has developed an AT&T Blue Room policy to maintain integrity of the live performances featured on the site. AT&T will not edit any audio during the live webcast, of performances. We may edit visual content — either through camera angle changes or video blackouts — if there is strong sexual content. Also, we are going to have a clear viewer-discretion messaging both before and during the webcasts. The terms and conditions of the site, which users accept when they choose to view the webcast, requires users to be at least 13 years of age." ...

It's been 42 years since Johnny Cash's arrest in Starkville, Mississippi, for picking flowers from a resident's garden. But a judge who is reviewing the matter could potentially pardon the late musician, according to BBC News, and the city plans to instead honor him with the Johnny Cash Pickin' Festival from November 2-4. Def Jam confirmed that the release date for West's forthcoming Graduation has been pushed up to a late August release from its original September date. No specific date has been announced yet, but in true Kanye fashion, the rapper broke the news of the switch himself, on his latest mixtape Can't Tell Me Nothing — which shares its title with Graduation's first single, co-produced by West and DJ Toomp. ...

The "Shrek" series will conclude in 2012 with a final fifth volume, to follow a fourth, origin-story installment in 2010, DreamWorks chief Jeffrey Katzenberg told Australia's The Age newspaper. "It's a finite story, has been from the beginning, and I think that's part of its integrity, part of its strength, that we're not thinking this up as we go," he said. "Ultimately, we will come back to understand how Shrek arrived in that swamp. We will reveal his story." ... Hogwarts will soon have a campus in Orlando, Florida. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a theme park within a theme park, is expected to open in late 2009 at Universal's Islands of Adventure at the Universal Orlando Resort. Dr. Louis Pena, the coroner who testified Tuesday that actress Lana Clarkson's death was a homicide, acknowledged Thursday that crime-lab mistakes were made while collecting evidence at Phil Spector's mansion, AP reports. Pena said Clarkson's body was mistakenly moved, compromising at least one item from the crime scene in the process, and also said the medical findings could not establish who held the gun that fired the bullet that killed Clarkson. Pena said the actress had gunshot residue on her hands but that it doesn't necessarily mean she fired the gun. In a hearing the jury did not witness, lawyers argued over whether jurors should hear about a diary Clarkson kept. After Pena testified that he had not considered doing a "psychological autopsy" on Clarkson, since he had determined her death was not a suicide but a homicide, a Spector defense attorney asked him if he considered documents found in her computer. That includes "The Story of My Life," a composition in which she discussed having drug problems and talked about a seeing visions of a dead actress who committed suicide. The prosecution said the writings had not been authenticated and therefore could not be relied upon. "If you have the words of a deceased ... how do you keep that away from the jury and away from an expert who could have considered it," Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler said. ...

Fat Joe is wanted for questioning by police in Miami Beach, Florida, as a witness to a double murder that occurred outside a restaurant in South Beach over the Memorial Day weekend. The police report states that the Terror Squad leader allegedly was in the company of Lessli Paz of New York and Joey Navarro of Florida in a Cadillac Escalade truck when Jermaine "Wufgang" Chamberline approached the vehicle and fired a weapon on the two men, killing them both. However, Jeffrey Lichtman, Fat Joe's attorney, told MTV News: "The cops never contacted Joe directly. I called the cops, I told them he is out of the country on music business, but if they want to speak to him, we will. The police then told me they already apprehended the [alleged perpetrator,] but they may take us up on the offer. And we have not heard back from them since." ...

Ne-Yo's publicist is flatly denying claims that the singer will announce that he's gay during a New York press conference this week and in an upcoming issue of Essence magazine. An e-mail purportedly including quotes from the interview and attributed to a woman named Barbra Stradoff at Essence has also been circulating. "It's completely false," a Def Jam representative said. "There's isn't a staff member by that name at Essence, nor is Ne-Yo going to be featured in the October issue of the magazine."...
After lining up a series of media appearances promoting her new album, A Public Affair, Jessica Simpson has canceled nearly all the scheduled stops — but she did appear on "TRL" Tuesday (August 29) after all. The singer has lost her voice and will not join "Today" on Tuesday or "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Wednesday, while what was set to be a performance on "TRL" was scaled back to just an appearance and autograph signing. "Her voice capabilities are at a minimum," her label rep said. Simpson won't be canceling all her plans while she's in New York — her roller-skating record-release party set for Tuesday night at the Roxy is still a go. ...
William Smith, the music producer Taylor Hicks filed suit against on August 22 after he made three of the singer's pre-"Idol" recordings available on iTunes, told MTV News Tuesday afternoon that the proceedings have been killed. Smith said the two sides reached a settlement before the matter made its way into the halls of Alabama's U.S. District Court, but he would not discuss the specifics of the agreement — a court order prevents him from detailing the terms. Still, Smith did say, "Taylor has thanked me for helping his career," and called the settlement "amiable." ...
Beyoncé will perform in New York's Times Square on September 8 as part of her appearance on "Good Morning America" that morning. The show airs at 7 a.m. ET on ABC. ... Even though his platinum tank has run out of steam, No Limit founder Master P continues to motor forward with business ventures. According to representatives for the rapper, the New Orleans native has launched a hip-hop inspired play based on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Uncle Willy, which stars Terry Miles, revolves around a Vietnam veteran regrouping his family after his home, possessions and city are all destroyed by the catastrophe. Tanya Stephens, the woman suing Lil' Kim for copyright infringement over the song "Durty," has issued a statement defending the lawsuit — which Kim's lawyer characterized as a "money and media play" — as an attempt to get some credit. "If she had bothered to give props where due even once, I would have said, 'Let it go,' " Stephens said. "That isn't even one of my better works. Really, if she had linked me, I would've written her a much better song for free." ... Tom Cruise has made a deal with a group that will finance the overhead costs of his film-production company, the Los Angeles Times reports. Daniel M. Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins, is one of the investors behind the two-year deal, which amounts to less than $3 million. Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner had been receiving about $10 million annually from Paramount Pictures (owned by Viacom, which also owns MTV) to cover their overhead under the previous deal. ... The Black Crowes announced Monday that longtime keyboardist Eddie Hawrysch — who has played with the group since 1991 — has been "released from the band due to personal issues." The typically private Bruce Springsteen took to his Web site this week to refute rumors that his marriage to E Street Band backup singer Patti Scialfa is on the rocks. "I hesitate to use this Web site for anything personal believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job," Springsteen wrote. "However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn't pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years — the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married." Lil' Kim's legal problems aren't over yet — though the rapper is out of jail after serving 10 months on perjury charges, she's now facing a copyright-infringement lawsuit. The suit, which also names Kim's record label Atlantic and was filed last week in a New York federal court, claims that Kim stole her song "Durty" nearly word for word from a 1997 track by Jamaican reggae singer Tanya Stephens called "Mi and Mi God." In response, Kim's lawyer L. Londell McMillan claims the song wasn't stolen, but interpolated, "which happens all the time in hip-hop." Stephens claims in her suit that she was shocked to hear her words in Lil' Kim's song — even though Kim had flown her out to New York in 1999, asked her to sing on one of her albums, and sang "Mi and Mi God" to Stephens to demonstrate how much she liked her music. Kim counters, however, that Stephens never objected to the use of her song until after she failed to get more money for it being licensed. "This matter should have been resolved, but it appears to be another money and media play at Lil' Kim's expense," her lawyer said. Stephens claims she should receive all past and future royalties on the song. ...
Foxy Brown (real name Inga Marchand) pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault charges Monday (August 28), but then quickly tried to retract her plea, The Associated Press reports. The charges stemmed from her notorious nail-salon fight in 2004, and the plea deal will result in three years of probation and anger-management classes — but no jail time, according to a Manhattan, New York, district attorney spokesperson. She is due to be sentenced October 23. Brown's plea has wavered since the incident: In April 2005, she pleaded not guilty to the charges, but was then expected to make a deal in December. On Monday, after entering her guilty plea, she returned to the courtroom claiming she had been rushed into the decision. "The plea stands," the judge told her. ...
Protests have prompted concert promoters in Moscow to change the venue for Madonna's long-awaited concert there on September 12, AP reports. City officials feared police would not be able to monitor the originally scheduled venue in Vorobyovye Gory, and now it will be taking place at Luzhniki Stadium instead. ... Master P On His Son, Lil' Romeo: 'I'm Working For Him Now'

LOS ANGELES — Eight years ago this week, Master P was taking a break from running his No Limit empire to rehearse for his Video Music Awards performance.
Oh, how times have changed.
No Limit is no more, and P would be lucky to get an invite to a VMA afterparty. Still — and give the guy some credit — he's optimistic. Especially about his new boss.
"I'm working for him now," P said recently, nodding to his son and protégé, Lil' Romeo. "He's the youngest president in the game right now."
Romeo — or Cookie Monster Jr., as he sometimes goes by these days (dad would be Cookie Monster Sr.) — is the CEO of Guttar Music, home to more than 15 rappers.
"I'm gonna do just like my dad did back in the day with No Limit, just bring a lot of artists out," Romeo said. "We gonna try to drop albums every month. That's my goal."
The label is also setting out to be a trailblazer in technology, releasing DVDs along with all its albums. "Me and Romeo are preparing for the future," P said. "We just been making a lot of great music and making movies [to go along with it]."
Both Master P and Silkk the Shocker are on the label, as well as newcomers like T-Bo and Cognito. "They're from New Orleans, and they're all Hurricane Katrina victims," P said.
Guttar Music's first release will be "God's Gift," a Romeo movie with an accompanying soundtrack featuring his latest tracks. It's due November 14.
"I feel I just matured so much in these new songs," Romeo said.
"He's [17]. He's so old now," P interrupted, joking.
This fall, Romeo plans to enroll in college and play basketball.
