Vaughn Mason and Crew's "Bounce Skate Rock Roll" launched the bounce sound that lead to hits by Zapp "More Bounce to the Ounce" and others. Chicagoan Mason played a variety of instruments and at one-time managed the 21st Century who are best known for the classic Chicago soul ballad "Remember the Rain,"a 1975 RCA single that can be found on Rhino's Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 9 and Capitol's Slow Jams: The Timeless Collection, Vol. 7. Moving to New York, he became an audio engineer doing sessions for BT Express. Starting Vaughn Mason and Crew, the group signed with Brunswick Records. With lead vocals by Jerome Bell, "Bounce Skate Rock Roll Pt. 1" bounced to number five R&B and number 81 pop in early 1980. The Bounce Skate Rock Roll album went to number 25 R&B during the summer of 1980 and yielded the mid-charting single "Roller Skate."Another favorite by the band is "Jammin' Big Guitar" which charted number 65 in the summer of 1981. Mason recorded two charting R&B singles for Salsoul Records that were issued as Vaughn Mason featuring Butch Dayo: "You Can Do It"(late 1982) and "Party on the Corner"(spring 1983). Mason later started another group, Raze, who had a Top 24 R&B Columbia single with the house jam "Break 4 Love" during the fall of 1988 and can be found on Hed Kandi's Back to Love, Vol. 3.
