Five years after they famously locked lips at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna and Britney Spears are set to work together again. This time, however, their hook-up will be long-distance.

According to People magazine, Spears is slated to film a video piece soon that will be included as part of the stage show for Madonna's upcoming Sticky & Sweet Tour. "Britney is going to film something for Madonna's show in the next week or so," said Madonna's longtime spokesperson, Liz Rosenberg, according to the magazine. Details on what the clip will include, however, were scarce, as Rosenberg declined to comment on what role Spears will play in the production or where she will be filming. "I don't know. It's a secret," she said.

She did, however, deny published reports that Spears is in New York to film the video and that she's already shot the bit. This would be the second high-profile cameo for Spears in the past month. She shot some footage for the Pussycat Dolls' "When I Grow Up" video last month, but her part was left on the cutting-room floor at the last minute.

An unnamed source told USMagazine.com that "Madonna specifically asked to work with Britney again." The singers have not shared a stage since the infamous VMA kiss, but Madonna did speak out in Spears' defense earlier this year when the singer was going through some hard personal times.

In March, Madonna — who is under the tabloid microscope herself these days due to since-refuted rumors of a possible divorce and an alleged relationship with Yankees star Alex Rodriguez — told the "Yo on E!" satellite radio show that the media needed to "step off" Spears and give her some room. "For real ... let's go save her," Madonna said, adding that she thought her 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes, was aware of what was going on with the pop star and felt "very protective of Spears."

At the time, Madonna also said she was digging Spears' Blackout album, which she listened to while working out.

Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, confirmed to "Access Hollywood" that the video tribute would be taking place but quashed rumors that Spears would actually be touring with or performing live with Madonna. The Sticky & Sweet Tour kicks off in the U.S. on October 4 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

In the past, when rumors of troubles in Madonna's marriage to director Guy Ritchie have surfaced, the singer has mostly ignored the chatter. But over the weekend, just days after her longtime publicist issued a statement denying that she was seeking to end her seven-year marriage, Madonna herself issued an even more strongly worded statement to People magazine denying the rumors, as well as speculation about an alleged affair with Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.

"My husband and I are not planning on getting a divorce. I know Alex Rodriguez through Guy Oseary, who manages both of us. I brought my kids to a Yankee game. I am not romantically involved in any way with Alex Rodriguez. I have nothing to do with the state of his marriage or what spiritual path he may choose to study," Madonna said in the statement.

Meanwhile, People reported that Rodriguez's wife, Cynthia, left the baseball superstar over rumors of his affair with Madonna, which an unnamed friend told the magazine was the "last straw." She was also reportedly put off by his sudden interest in Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism that Madonna and her family practice.

Cynthia Rodriguez filed for divorce on Monday (July 7) in Miami, according to TMZ, claiming that the slugger had "emotionally abandoned" her and that their marriage is "irretrievably broken" because of her husband's "extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct." Madonna is not named in the divorce papers.

Cynthia, who gave birth to the couple's second child three months ago, has also been the subject of a rumored rock romance — in her case, with Lenny Kravitz. But the perennially eligible rock bachelor released a statement last week explaining that the two are simply friends and that Cynthia fled to Paris to avoid the media frenzy over the divorce.

Madonna treated the latest rumors about her marriage as more of the same type of whispering she's endured for decades. "I have learned over the years not to take accusations and the many false reports about me very seriously," she said. "I also appreciate how fiction and fact seem to be perceived as one and the same by people who read both newspapers and the Internet."

After more than a week of stony silence, Madonna's camp has stepped forward to deny the rampant rumors of the pop superstar's impending divorce from filmmaking husband Guy Ritchie.

Madonna's longtime spokesperson, Liz Rosenberg, released a statement to People magazine on Tuesday in which she said that the singer's marriage "does not need saving." Rosenberg was countering rumors that the couple's seven-year union was on the rocks, as well as a British news report that Madonna was seeking legal counsel from the same attorney who represented Paul McCartney in his recent divorce from Heather Mills.

"Madonna's husband Guy arrived in New York last night to be with his wife and family (not in a last-ditch attempt to save his marriage, which does not need saving)," Rosenberg told People. "There are no plans for Madonna and Guy to divorce." Speculation about the couple's marriage reached a fevered pitch this week as Madonna flew to New York to begin preparations for her upcoming Sticky & Sweet Tour, and Ritchie was nowhere to be seen.

The rumors picked up steam when Us Weekly reported that Madonna was seen making several late-night visits to the Central Park West apartment of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Rosenberg denied that report as well, explaining, "Madonna and Alex have the same manager, Guy Oseary. ... They have met. They know each other, and Madonna took her kids to a Yankees game last week. There's really not anything to comment on beyond that."

Madonna and Ritchie have been plagued by divorce rumors a number of times over the past few years, but Rosenberg chalked it all up to the usual chatter that dogs one of the world's most famous personalities. "It's nothing new that people are airing tons of dirty laundry Madonna's way lately — much of it untrue," Rosenberg said, jokingly adding more fuel to the fire by denying a sordid tale that no one had even suggested yet. "By the way, rumors of Madonna and Lil Wayne are quite exaggerated as well."

Madonna Says Britney Spears Is Troubled Because 'She Was Never Allowed To Have A Childhood'

Madonna told BBC Radio on Tuesday that Britney Spears' recent problems are at least partially due to her career-oriented early years.

"I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she was never allowed to have a childhood," Madonna said, according to People.com. "She didn't get to grow up and make mistakes privately and try things out and just be a kid and be innocent. She's been watched, judged and been under a microscope since she's been a teenager. It's hard to evolve that way."

Of course, a lot has changed for the younger pop star since Madonna and Britney famously locked lips during a performance at the 2003 VMAs.

Madonna said her own children are "over" her fame. "They come to the rehearsals, but they're sort of over it. They like to skateboard around."

She said they actually protest her rigid work schedule. "[They say,] 'When are you coming home?' 'Why are you always working?' 'Why can't you just be like a normal mom?' " Madonna said. "I just remind them about all the things that they have, and that if I didn't do what I did, they wouldn't have those things."

When asked what those things include, the singer said, "They get to travel a lot, they get to do a lot of interesting things and meet a lot of interesting people. Usually that shuts them up!"

Late last month, Madonna also weighed in on Miley Cyrus' recent photo scandal. "I just want to go on record and say everyone should just leave her alone. I never represented anything wholesome in America ... I only had one way to go," she laughed. "People are just bored. Leave the poor girl alone! She's going to grow up soon, she's going to probably show her knees next — watch out!"

Mariah Carey's two-week reign as the music industry's leading lady has come to an end, thanks to the Queen of Pop.

With sales totaling nearly 280,000 — by no means her strongest opening — Madonna's 11th studio offering, Hard Candy, becomes the nation's newest #1 and the seventh chart-topping debut of the Material Girl's illustrious, 26-year career.

Madonna's latest pummeled Carey's E=MC2, which, according to the latest SoundScan totals, suffered a 48 percent drop in retail interest to end the week with 95,400 scans. Mariah's record falls to the chart's #2 position on next week's Billboard albums sales chart.

Hard Candy was the highest-charting (duh!) new release of the week, but was one of almost 30 records that will be impacting next week's top 200 — and among seven to enter the chart in the top 10.

Following Carey at #3, selling close to 84,000 copies during its fourth week of commercial availability, is Leona Lewis' Spirit. The next five albums on the chart are all newcomers: R&B hunk Lyfe Jennings' Lyfe Change enters at #4 with 80,000 scans, while antiquated hair-metallers Def Leppard's Songs from the Sparkle Lounge bows at #5 with 54,800 copies sold. The Roots' Rising Down debuts at #6 with sales reported at 53,700, and Portishead's Third follows at #7, scanning close to 53,000 units. The self-titled LP from Mudcrutch — Tom Petty's pre-Heartbreakers band, which has reunited more than 30 years after splitting — sold 38,000 copies, which was good enough for a #8 debut, and Tim McGraw's Greatest Hits 1 & 2 rounds things out at #10, selling 29,300 copies.

Wedged in between Mudcrutch and McGraw, we find a top-10 mainstay: Now That's What I Call Music!'s 27th installment falls three chart positions to #9, with week-eight sales of 30,800.

Elsewhere on the chart, Steve Winwood's Nine Lives enters at #12 with 26,400 sold, while Carly Simon's This Kind of Love follows at #15 with 23,000 scans. Augustana's Can't Love, Can't Hurt opens at #21 with 21,400 copies snatched up, while Lil Mama's VYP: Voice of the Young People claims the #25 slot, scanning 18,600 units. Mindless Self Indulgence's If follows at #27 with 17,700 in sales, and Estelle's Shine enters the chart at #38 with 14,800 sold. "American Idol" alum Phil Stacey's self-titled new one bows at #43 with sales reported at 13,100 and change, while Forever the Sickest Kids' Underdog Alma Mater can be found two chart positions down, thanks to sales of 13,000-plus.

Thrash titans Testament return at #59, selling 11,400 copies of their latest, The Formation of Damnation, while Santogold's self-titled debut enters at #74 with 9,500 sold. Robyn's self-titled offering debuts at #100 with 7,200 sold, and New Found Glory's two-disc Tip of the Iceberg/ Takin' It Ova! opens at #136 with 5,000 copies sold.

Imagine a time when mesh was in, hairspray and a teaser brush were weapons of choice, there was lace on everything, and hundreds of young girls emulated a certain "Like a Virgin" pop star. The year was 1985, and Madonna ruled the world.

To commemorate the release of Madonna's 11th album, Hard Candy, MTV News decided to track down the girl who best embodied the essence of the Material Girl back then, the winner of a 1985 Madonna look-alike contest held at Macy's in New York.

In the picturesque neighborhood of Whitestone, New York, stands a quaint little house. An attractive blond woman wearing a white top, a pair of jeans and heels opens the front door while pitter-pattering feet and a squawking bird make noise in the background. She looks like a typical mom, minus the "mom jeans," but she was the strutting, pouting, rosary-wearing winner of the Madonna look-alike contest 23 years ago.

Then-16-year-old JeanAnn Difranco became the envy of teen girls everywhere when the judges — including Andy Warhol, MTV VJ Nina Blackwood and "Madonna: Lucky Star" author Michael McKenzie — named her the winner. She received tickets for the following night's Madonna concert at Radio City Music Hall and gained nationwide fame as the best Madonna look-alike around.

MTV's search for Difranco was a bit daunting, due to a little spelling mistake. There was an all-out search for Jean Anne Difranko, not JeanAnn Difranco. Needless to say, two spelling errors can lead to a week's worth of dead ends. After some experimentation with the spelling, the name and location of one of Madge's most devoted fans finally popped up on the computer screen.

These days, JeanAnn has traded her bangles for a wedding ring and her hairspray for a curling iron. The supreme Madonna body double got married (she is now JeanAnn Perzan); owns a cat and a bird; and has two children, 10-year-old Angelo and 6-year-old Gianna. But don't let the family and the different look fool you: She's still a die-hard fan of the Material Girl, and she's got the pictures, albums and magazine clippings to prove it.

"I used to rock the crucifix, the lace gloves, the Madonna mole," Perzan said. "Now, I rock two kids, a husband and pets."

The decor of Perzan's home is simple yet elegant, with no remnants of '80s style in sight. But her dining room table is piled with memorabilia from her Madonna years, and a framed collection of photographs featuring her different Madonna poses is in plain view.

In addition to her nicely coordinated outfit, Perzan donned a large gold crucifix necklace, a throwback to her look-alike days.

She beamed as she spoke about her teen years idolizing Madonna. She expressed pride in being a part of Madonna's history, but nothing brought more smiles to her face than watching footage of the look-alike contest in '85.

Perzan passed her adoration for Madonna to her children. Angelo knows all about his mother's love for the pop icon, and little Gianna even resembles Madge's own 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes. Dressed like a little Madonna look-alike herself, Gianna was wearing a lace dress, a crucifix necklace and the quintessential '80s Madonna accessory: the lace glove.

Perzan has never missed a Madonna concert, even when she was pregnant, and she was thrilled to purchase Madge's new album. Perzan enjoys her life as a wife and mother, but there's still one chapter left unfinished from her days as a Madonna look-alike.

"Madonna, 23 years ago, I dressed like you," she said. "I did everything to look like you. I won a contest and thought I was going to meet you. I never did. If you're watching this, I want to meet you. Make my dream come true!"

Among the repertoire of characters created by the inimitable Molly Shannon, one of my all-time favorites is Sally O'Malley, the spry, irrepressible quinquagenarian who likes to mix it up with the kids, shouting, "I'm 50! 50 years old! I kick! And I stretch! And I kick!"

Yes, she does. But alas, Sally doesn't kick, stretch, dance, perform or frankly look quite as good doing it as another woman about to celebrate the big 5-0 on August 16: Madonna. And what a year it's already turning out to be for her. She directed her first feature, "Filth and Wisdom," which, despite an iffy reception at the Berlin Film Festival, has supporters; she produced a documentary on poverty-ravaged Malawi and its orphans — and managed to raise upwards of $3.5 million for the cause at a star-studded Gucci event; and in March she was inducted into a little club known as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Of course, there's also last week's release of a new Madonna album, Hard Candy, which has drawn many raves. The record also, despite its triumvirate of contemporary producers (Pharrell, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake), has a decidedly retro feel in places, harkening back to some of her earliest dance hits. Suffice to say "Candy Shop," "Miles Away" and "Heartbeat" would not sound out of place next to "Everybody," "Borderline" and "Lucky Star." And as if to reinforce that point, Madonna's record-release show at New York's Roseland last week was replete with old-school touches: Kangol hats and dayglo on the dancers, graffiti projections and a vintage subway train for the finale.

Hard Candy also marks a page-turning moment for the biggest female star of her generation. It's Madge's last album for her longtime home, Warner Bros., before she bolts to a "360 deal" with Live Nation.

Anyway, might all of this make for a moment of reflection, of taking stock, of (heaven forbid) nostalgia?

Not if you're Madonna. The woman has never been much for such sentiments — and here's what it was like trying to draw her into the topic backstage at Roseland:

John Norris: With the Hall of Fame, with the Warner thing ending and with Live Nation starting — and with something happening on August 16 — do you look at it all as a milestone, or ...

Madonna: Define "it," please?

Norris: This year.

Madonna: This year has been amazing so far. That's how I look at "it."

Norris: Yeah, but not anything more than that? Nothing more momentous, or...

Madonna: Life is getting better.

Norris: No chapter ending, one beginning?

Madonna: [Looking at me quizzically, like I have two heads, and shaking her head] No, just continuing. Did you not hear the song I was singing tonight? "There's no beginning and no ending"? Yeah?

(Head here for more of Madonna giving me a hard time.)

Madame Sarcasm is referring to "Give It 2 Me," one of the party-heartier tracks on Hard Candy and a lyric that I must admit I'd previously thought had more to with dancing or sex. But apparently it's more of a manifesto of sorts.

Another couplet from the same song goes "They say that a good thing never lasts, and then it has to fall/ Those are the people that did not amount to much at all."

Point taken, my lady.

Much to the music industry's delight, Madonna doesn't appear to be letting up on the live-performance front, either: Another tour is in the works for the late summer and fall. In fact, though dates have not yet been announced, chances are good that Madonna will celebrate her 50th birthday either in rehearsals for the tour or on the road.

For 25 years she has been the gold standard when it comes to arena-show dazzle, and there is no reason to think that won't continue. There is also no reason to think it won't make lots and lots of money: She has become as reliable in that department as U2 and the Rolling Stones. Speaking of whom, at Roseland last week, before launching into a rocked-up "Hung Up," Madonna busted out a little of the classic riff from "Satisfaction," then asked the crowd, "What, did you think you were coming to a Rolling Stones concert?"

On that note, last week a friend of mine (and rabid Madonnaphile) brought to my attention something Madge said 10 years ago in a 1998 VH1 special called "Madonna Rising." The show's host (and her BFF at the time) Rupert Everett asked Madonna whether she could see herself "like Mick Jagger, at age 50, still stomping around Madison Square Garden?" Her reply? "I do not." She went on to explain that while she didn't think there was a "stop date" for her, she did not see herself making pop music and videos in 10 years' time.

Ah yes. Well, none of us want to be held to things we say on tape. I am sure I have said things I no longer believe. However, when I brought this up at the very end of our interview last week (and remember now, this is after Madonna's rep had three times told me to wrap it up, and after Justin and Madonna had said they wanted to "go drink"), she denied having said it, telling me that in fact she had said she didn't see herself "running around in limousines" — and continued by telling me that I was "once again, not paying attention"!

Well, this time, Madge, I'm afraid ya did say it — we've got the tape!

But really, who cares? We should all be happy that she doesn't have an "end date." One of the last things she said to me was, "John, you need to live in the moment." I so do! I get focusing on the here and now, I get not looking back and moving forward. And I so get that age ain't nothing but a number. So I'll let Madonna have the final word: Not from the interview, but rather with one more lyric from her next single, "Give It 2 Me," that speaks for many of us:

"Don't stop me now, don't need to catch my breath/
I can go on and on and on/
When the lights go down and there's no one left/
I can go on and on and on."

Where do old interviews go to die? Since 1988 they've gone into the MTV News vault, but we've been exhuming them to bring you these classic natterings. Here's the latest in the series, which runs every Tuesday.

November of 1994 was cold, damp and windy up in Ronda, a fairly ancient town perched on a mountain cliff in the south of Spain. Madonna had gone there to shoot a video for "Take a Bow," her next single, so we, of course, dutifully followed. Ronda is promoted to tourists as the birthplace of modern bullfighting — meaning it was there, around 200 years earlier, that some brave/insane matador had decided to climb down from the relative safety of horseback to do battle with a bull face to face (or horn-to-groin, just as likely). "Take a Bow," the song, had nothing to do with bullfighting, but in the world of music videos this was a fact of gnat-like insignificance.

Madonna and her crew (which included cinematographer Harris Savides, who went on to shoot "American Gangster") set up in Ronda's old stone bullring, with Maddy's friend Donatella Versace, the fashion personage, flitting around up in the gallery. Congregated in a street outside the ring was a troupe of bullfighting pros — picadors, banderilleros, and so forth — who were awaiting the arrival of Madonna's video costar, the dark and sultry Emilio Muñoz, an actual, well-known torero. The sun had come out, and the afternoon proceeded in the usual way. Madonna, looking very 1940s in a little black-veiled hat (she was lobbying for the lead role in the movie version of the hit musical "Evita" at the time), was situated in a seat looking down on the dusty ring, where Muñoz twirled about, baffling a bovine opponent with his shiny cape. She was playing the role of a woman who'd been dumped by this guy, and was now blinking away tears of heartbreak. Since tears and heartbreak were two commodities rarely associated with Madonna, it had been decided to intersperse the video with other scenes showing her writhing around on a bed in her underwear. That was more like it.

Our interview later on proceeded in the usual way as well. Our own camera crew spent hours setting up a flattering shot on the edge of a courtyard garden in a beautiful old building filled with gleaming carved wood and weathered brick. Then Madonna arrived — well past the appointed time, as usual — and marched straight up to the cameras to check the out the angles and the lighting, which, as usual, she found to be wanting. After much scurrying about, everything was adjusted to ... well, not to her satisfaction, probably, but to a point where she was willing to put up with it without feeling compelled to punch anybody.

She was wearing some beautiful outfit — I forget exactly what it consisted of, but it looked great on the monitors. Then, however, she pronounced herself chilly, and suddenly pulled on a nondescript white sweater that obliterated the look we'd been hoping to capture. For good measure, she also flopped a fur lap robe over her legs, completing the impression of a person being nursed back to health following some frigid Arctic mishap. She then began talking about her family, her voice, and her then-trashy image while we blinked away tears of professional heartbreak.

Enjoy digging through The Loder Files? You'll find more here, and there's much more to come from the vaults — check back every Tuesday!
