WEEHAWKEN, New Jersey — Alicia Keys' band has been practicing a bridge between David Bowie's "Let's Dance" and Keys' "Karma" for a half-hour to the point where they seem like one song.

Keys nods her head to the beat, giving her approval to the proposed medley for her performance at the Black Ball, Keep A Child Alive's annual fundraiser in New York on Thursday (November 9).

"David Bowie is in the show," Keys said, "so we're singing together. But the song you just heard, we may or may not do. I figured, while he's there, why not [do a duet]?"

Also joining Keys onstage will be Damien Marley, Angelique Kidjo and Louis XIV, who've all signed on to help Keys turn this annual event into a million-dollar fundraiser to help AIDS orphans in Africa. Interspersed between the performances will be film clips of the singer's recent trip to Africa, where she visited clinics in Durban, South Africa, and Kampala, Uganda.

"You go and you experience it, and you really feel what's happening and what we're doing, how you help by just being there. You feel a connection to it," Keys said. "And then musically, it's the bringing together of a whole world of people that you will probably never see on the same stage ever again."

Keys is trying to bridge worlds in more ways than one. Like Bono, Jay-Z and Madonna, she's on a mission to raise awareness about what's happening in Africa, particularly with the 12 million orphans left by the AIDS pandemic. "Awareness is power," she said. "Here I am, thousands and thousands of miles away, and most people will never see it and get to know with their own experience and feeling that this is what people are going through. But if I could show them, 'Here's what it looks like,' for those who can never be that close to it, it ignites a sense of insistency. You feel you have to do something.

"I don't think there can ever be too much awareness," she added. "From South America to Haiti to Africa, if you can say what's happening and someone can be moved by that, that's important. We're a global family. There are some people who live on 137th Street and will never leave 137th Street, and there's things happening on 137th Street that we should all know about. But where are we going if we don't care?"

The money raised by Thursday's fundraiser "goes directly to the people," Keys assured, to provide anti-retroviral medicine, staff clinics and to build orphanages. "If you donate just a dollar a day, a child could live on that for a year," she said. "It's the full package." One of the Black Ball honorees, Carol Dyantyl, who Keys calls "Mama Carol," looks after 900 children in an orphanage in Soweto, South Africa, called Ikageng Ministries. "There's a huge orphan problem," Keys said. "It's a reaction to what happens when you can't get the medicine to everyone. Families pass away.

"When I first went over there, I felt a huge, heavy weight on my shoulders," Keys added. "People looked at me like I came with all the answers, and I didn't have the answers. I sat down with tens of hundreds of kids, listening to their stories, their lives. They were infected, or their parents were infected or died. I just said, 'What do you need?' And they said, 'Medicine. We don't have access.' "

Moved by one particular child's story, Keys has written a new song in his honor. Sudi, whose family lives in the slums of Mombasa, Kenya, was 17 years old and infected with HIV but didn't receive any medication until he was 14. His growth was so stunted, he looked 9 years old, because he was less than 4 feet tall. "He passed away while I was in Africa," she said. "But he didn't die in vain. It makes you realize the later you start the medication, the harder it is, and that's why it's so important to get them the medicine very young so they can respond. If we can start other children much earlier, they can live a normal life."

She's not ready to share the song just yet — she feels like it's too close to her heart at the moment — but she did share her time with Sudi via footage she aired on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." In response, Oprah's Angel Network raised $250,000, and Key's fan club raised $4,000.

"We're just everyday people, but we can be heroes and make a huge change," Keys said. "I've gone back, and I saw buildings, whole pediatric wings, that now exist. Orphanages erected. Children who could eat, mothers who could live, families who could have a real life now. I saw kids happy and screaming and playing and alive. I saw 900 children who had some hope because we provided for them in some way. It's amazing to see what we can do with the money we raise, when it goes where it's needed."

So instead of the heavy pain she felt before, Keys said what she now feels is faith and hope. "I'm driven and excited and proud of what we've done, what we'll continue to do," Keys said. "My heart, it bleeds, because we have to be the voice for the voiceless. That's what I want to be."

Paul Wall, Louis XIV, Bloc Party On 'SSX' Game Soundtrack

Consider this playlist: Blackalicious, Iron Maiden, Paul Wall and Louis XIV. It may sound like someone's iPod on shuffle, but it's actually the eclectic mix for "SSX on Tour," the latest installment of Electronic Arts' stunt-filled, blistering snowboarding series, due this fall.

On Monday EA announced an "SSX" soundtrack that goes beyond the usual one or two genres featured in most high-profile sports games. "On Tour" will feature 41 licensed songs from artists as diverse as Def Leppard, Jurassic 5, the Perceptions and the Scorpions.

The rock and metal aspects add a bit of "Tony Hawk"-style flavor to a series whose critically acclaimed (but not "Tony Hawk"-size-selling) "SSX3" focused on DJ-driven hip-hop and techno. "SSX Tricky," the 2001 second installment of the sometimes-numbered series, had boasted an even more prominent hip-hop connection: When players pulled off a string of the game's signature over-the-top boarding tricks, the in-game music automatically switched to the Run-DMC classic "It's Tricky."

For "On Tour," hip-hop songs will score the game's trick-based competitions, but the pure racing aspects of the game will primarily be driven by guitar-based tunes, from raging punk to thrashing metal.

The music of the "SSX" series isn't just known for its signature songs. The triggered Run-DMC effect in "SSX Tricky" highlighted one of the series' other trademark aspects: interactive music. While most games that feature licensed music simply play their songs as background, the "SSX" games have explored the idea of making a game's music as malleable as its visuals. Previous installments allowed a player's racing styles to subtly shape the sound of each song.

"On Tour" explores that idea further. When a player snowboards down the game's immense slopes, the in-game music plays in normal fashion. But when the boarder gets some air, the song's lyrics drop out, for a more ethereal feel. If the airborne player then triggers one of the game's wildest tricks (picture, for example, a hurtling snowboarder stepping out of their board and breakdancing on it in midair), the game switches to a "Matrix"-style slow-mo and the instrumentals fade, drawing full aural attention to the swiping sounds of the board as it cuts the atmosphere. When the player's racer lands back on the snow, the full music kicks back in, without missing a beat. It's remix via snowboard.

The game's Vancouver-based developer, EA Canada, is promising that "SSX on Tour" will be the biggest "SSX" yet, covering the largest amount of mountain yet seen in the franchise. In a series first, players will have the option to leave their snowboard behind and shred the entire mountain on skis. The game will be available in the fall for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and PSP.

"SSX on Tour" soundtrack track listing, according to Electronic Arts:

Avenged Sevenfold - "Bat Country"

Billy Talent - "Red Flag"

Blackalicious - "Rhythm Sticks"

Bloc Party - "Banquet"

Bonobo - "Pick up"

Bonobo - "Flutter"

Chali 2Na featuring Beenie Man - "International"

C-Rayz Walz - "Street Reppin"

Death From Above 1979 - "Romantic Rights"

Def Leppard - "Let It Go"

Dio - "Stand Up and Shout"

Diplo - "Big Lost"

Diplo featuring P.E.A.C.E. - "Indian Thick Jawns"

Diva International - "Nothing to Do"

DJ Spooky and Dave Lombardo featuring Chuck D - "B-Side Wins Again"

Fu Manchu - "I Can't Hear You"

Goldfinger - "My Everything"

Hot Hot Heat - "Pickin' It Up"

Iron Maiden - "Run to the Hills"

Jurassic 5 - "Red Hot"

LCD Soundsystem - "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House"

Louis XIV - "God Killed the Queen"

Maximo Park - "Apply Some Pressure"

Morningwood - "Nu Rock"

Motörhead - "Overkill"

Nine Black Alps - "Shot Down"

OK Go - "Here It Goes Again"

Paul Wall featuring Big Pokey of the S.U.C. - "Sittin' Sidewayz"

Pennywise - "Competition Song"

Queens of the Stone Age - "Medication"

Rock 'N' Roll Soldiers - "Flag Song"

Scorpions - "Dynamite"

Sweatshop Union - "Come Back"

The Faint - "I Disappear"

The Herbaliser featuring Roots Manuva - "Lord, Lord"

The Herbaliser - "Gadget Funk"

The Hives - "No Pun Intended"

The Perceptionists - "People 4 Prez"

Vatican DC - "Antisocial"

We Are Scientists - "Lousy Reputation"

Z-Trip featuring Whipper Whip - "All About the Music"

Apparently, when he's not picking fights with dudes in other bands, breaking up with rail-thin supermodels and, in general, creating a ruckus, ex-Libertines and current Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty likes to use his finger like a pen and write words in the air in front of his face.

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose has fired back at his former bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan, through his attorney. Two weeks ago, Slash and Duff filed a federal lawsuit against the singer, charging that Rose transferred the publishing rights to the band's back catalog without their permission and knowingly pocketed royalty payments that were owed to the rest of the band. But on Monday morning (August 29) Axl's attorney, Howard Weitzman, issued a statement characterizing the lawsuit as "frivolous" and "premature." He claims the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, which collects money for songwriters, issued a check for the band's collective royalties to Axl's publisher — a clerical error, he said. The check was returned and ASCAP was notified of the mistake. "Rather than pick up the telephone and contact Axl or his representatives, his former partners scurried to file a lawsuit that contained false statements about Axl rather then making an effort to learn the truth regarding ASCAP's mistake," the statement reads. "Slash and Duff have an unfortunate pattern over the past few years of filing sensational but baseless lawsuits for the purpose of generating anti-Axl propaganda." ...

The Deftones' forthcoming B-Sides & Rarities, a CD/DVD package that drops on October 4, will feature several previously released and hard-to-find covers, including versions of the Cocteau Twins' "Wax and Wane," Helmet's "Sinatra," Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur," Jawbox's "Savory," the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" and the Cure's "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep." The disc will also boast a previously unavailable acoustic version of "Digital Bath." ... Garbage have canceled the European leg of their current tour, deciding instead to wrap things up at the end of September in Australia. Dates had been scheduled for October in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. According to a statement from the band's label, Garbage have "been constantly on the road since the beginning of March" and "feel they have somewhat overextended themselves and have mutually decided to conclude their tour at the end of September. The band wishes to extend their apologies to all Garbage fans in the territories involved and thank them profusely for their support." All tickets will be refunded. ...

Don't worry, it doesn't mean Erasure are breaking up, but frontman Andy Bell is going the solo route with his upcoming album, Electric Blue, due October 4. Bell is planning to support the album, which includes a duet with Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, with live dates in late 2005 and early 2006. ...

Live will release their first Epic Records album, Songs From Black Mountain, in mid-November. The first single, "The River," will hit radio stations in mid-September. ... The site (recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com) will track the case as it progresses and has already posted a number of legal documents and a host of links to stories about Santangelo. According to lawyer Ray Beckerman, "We have set up this blog in order to collect evidence and input about these oppressive lawsuits." The recording industry has filed 13,000 lawsuits against Internet users since September 2003, with nearly 3,000 of those accused settling for an average of $4,000-$5,000. ...

The Killers Teach Louis XIV How To Deal With Screamers

Louis XIV are learning plenty from frequent tourmates the Killers, including helpful hints on accessorizing, moisturizing and — most importantly — how to act around throngs of screaming, out-of-their minds teenage girls.

"I watched the Ziggy Stardust movie on the bus the other day, and it's all just screaming young girls in the front of the stage. And I realized that it's exactly the same for shows with us and the Killers," Louis XIV frontman Jason Hill laughed. "They really eat it up. But we've learned from the Killers how to play it cool. I mean, they're pros at it. To play crowds of 16,000 people a night, you've got to know how to do it."

They've also picked up on the Killers' penchant for on-the-road recording. The two bands have already hooked up for one memorable late-night tour-bus jam session (see "Killers, Louis XIV Get Busy At The Back Of The Tour Bus"), but it didn't end there. Inspired by the Killers' knack for pounding out new songs while on tour (see "Killers Don't Understand Their Anton Corbijn-Directed Clip"), Louis XIV had a studio built on their tour bus so they could be writing and recording at all times.

"If you're on the road too much, there's a lot of debauchery, there's so much partying that you're always looking for a spare moment to work," Hill said. "So we decided to put a studio in the back of the bus. We got the idea from working with the Killers. One time we had [Killers' drummer] Ronnie [Vannucci] come in at 4:30 in the morning and set up his kit and tracked him playing drums on a new tune that [Killers frontman] Brandon [Flowers] wrote, called 'For Reasons Unknown.' It was completely stupid and crazy but it was the right time to do it and it had to be done."

But it's not like writing a ton of songs is something new for Louis XIV. They've been doing it for a while ... just not on the road. In fact, up until pretty recently, touring wasn't even an option for the band. They were just, as Hill put is, "broke musicians" with nothing better to do than write songs.

"We write all the time. We have a lot of songs just hanging around because we were nobodies before we made our record," he laughed. "You have to write songs every day, no matter how you feel. And you have to keep telling yourself that for every song that people might hear, there are 50 they don't."

In fact, the band already has somewhere around 50 new songs written for the follow-up to its debut LP, The Best Little Secrets Are Kept (see "Louis XIV: Killers-Endorsed Quartet With King-Sized Egos").

"We've got a bunch of new songs: 'Ashes and Cinders,' 'Queer Pressure,' 'Cut Your Tongue Out,' those were just ones I've written in the past few days. All we need now is some days off to get into a studio," Hill said. "We had four days off like a month ago, and normally you'd want to just sit around in a bed and do nothing, 'cause you've been on tour for months, but by the second day we were getting bored, and we went back into the studio and started working on a real Motown-sounding album. We always just sort of go into the studio and press 'record' and see what happens."

CHICAGO — OK, it wasn't the traveling festival that defined a generation a decade ago. But Lollapalooza — a pair of shows in downtown Chicago on Saturday and Sunday — seemed reinvigorated in its new setting despite withering heat, dust storms and some performers' inappropriately dark stage clothing.

(Click here for photos of Weezer, The Pixies, The Killers and more at Lollapalooza 2005.)

Scorching sets by the Killers, the Pixies, Weezer, Spoon, Louis XIV, a reunited Dinosaur Jr. and the Arcade Fire were among the weekend's highlights. But with 60 performers on six stages, whether you were into hippie jams (Blue Merle, Widespread Panic), Latintronica (Los Amigos Invisibles), psychedelic freakouts (the Dandy Warhols, the Warlocks), or new-wave power pop (OK Go, the Changes), festival co-founder Perry Farrell had something for each of the nearly 66,000 people who showed up over both days — even if the lineup lacked the diversity of past Lollas in favor of lots of indie rock played by (mostly) young white guys.

Rather than the usual outdoor sheds Lolla has played in the past, this year's festival was located among four baseball fields in the middle of the Chicago waterfront's sprawling Grant Park. With the four main stages alternating activity at opposite ends of the field all day, attendees ebbed and flowed like a large dusty amoeba. By early Saturday, the field was filled with couples, clusters — and families.

Yes, families. With free attendance for kids younger than 10, strollers appeared as hip a fashion accessory as lip rings. Parents with shorties in tow steadily rolled over to Kidzapalooza, located in a shady grove off the main drag. Kid-friendly performers, an instrument "petting zoo" where wee ones could try out real rock gear, and a tentful of professional stylists sculpting punk hairdos offered diversions for the strollerpalooza set.

Saturday's early performers hit a thematic get-back groove, ranging from the Beatles-y pop of Chicago's Redwalls and the psychedelic goth noise of Los Angeles' Warlocks to the electronic jams of France's M83 and the Dead 60s' Clash-inspired dub-reggae rock.

Pleasant surprises included former Porno for Pyros guitarist Pete DiStefano's kids-stage set of acoustic songs from his new album. While some tykes looked a bit bewildered during "Hypocrisy," their parents perked up when Farrell emerged to jam on a few Porno songs. In addition to "Pets" (who knew it could be a children's song?), the pair unveiled the new "Agua." Farrell — wearing a striped shirt, brown pants and a short, dazzling clownlike tie — said the tune, written while he vacationed in Samoa, was about "being like a dolphin and swimming away when people try to talk to you." This time the kids nodded while parents looked confused.

Former Chicagoan Liz Phair got off to a rocky start, seeming nervous and somewhat out of step with her band on "Supernova" and the midtempo title track from her upcoming album, Somebody's Miracle, due in October. But Phair hit her groove a few songs in with the decidedly family-unfriendly "F--- and Run."

Across the field, meanwhile, the Kaiser Chiefs were throwing down a sweaty "I Predict a Riot" during which singer Ricky Wilson climbed up a lighting rig to get a better view of the growing crowd. Dashboard Confessional's emo set was nearly drowned out by the shambolic Brian Jonestown Massacre, who punctuated their allotted hour of whispered dreamy folk pop (and repeated slagging of Dashboard) with long bouts of tuning up and knob-twiddling by frontman Anton Newcombe.

Unlike past Lollas, this year's event was light on sideshow diversions, DJs and hip-hop. A far-flung side stage featured Cypress Hill DJ Muggs' mash-up set, a b-boy breakdance demonstration and sparsely attended DJ sets over the weekend from Mark Farina, Z-Trip and Chicago house legend Derrick Carter.

The main stages, though, drew huge late-afternoon crowds for Cake, the Bravery and buff old-school punk Billy Idol. When Billy yelled "Sweat, sweat, sweat!" during "Dancing With Myself," it wasn't hard for the audience to comply as the temperature rose to a steamy 95-plus degrees. Listeners got a brief break when a light rain fell, but by the time Ohio duo the Black Keys took the stage an hour later for a blistering set of Delta blues, the only thing to remind the weary crowd of water were the two huge inflatable ducks onstage with Primus.

It was a rough night to be New York's Walkmen, with most of the crowd checking out the sunset gig by alt-rock gods the Pixies. The crowd chanted along to alterna-hits such as "Bone Machine" and "U Mass" and shouted out the choruses to lesser-knowns like "Caribou" and "I Bleed." A surprisingly large contingent also threw up six fingers during "Monkey Gone to Heaven" in conjunction with the line, "And the devil is six." As the sun set behind Sears Tower, profusely sweaty singer Frank Black sang about "big, big love" in "Gigantic," making for a postcard-perfect end to a long peaceful day in the grass.

But not before the day's only main-stage hip-hop act, the reunited Digable Planets trio, lost out attendance-wise to show closers Weezer. Rivers Cuomo and company hit a home run with a mix of classics ("Undone — The Sweater Song") and recent hits ("We Are All on Drugs," "Beverly Hills"). If the Pixies are the unofficial rulers of the aging alternative nation, Lollapalooza's national anthem is "Buddy Holly," which even the weariest 'Paloozers were crooning as the night wound to a close.

Sunday

With news that Sunday's temperature would creep dangerously past 100 degrees, it seemed probable that day two's crowd would be thinner — and it was, at first. While many families stayed away, diehards slathered on sunscreen, guzzled water and bopped along to OK Go's unironic noontime rendering of their hit, "You're So Damn Hot." Sunday's only mainstage hip-hop performer, conscious poet Saul Williams, mesmerized the lunchtime crowd with a flaming set of rhymes about black identity and antimaterialism complemented by a thick stew of piano samples and DJ Ad Lib's beats.

Following a set by reunited indie-rock legends Dinosaur Jr., Farrell used a midday slot to debut his latest project, Satellite Party. The unlikely mash-up of No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal and former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt played a meandering set of jam-funk originals with such titles as "Revolution Solution" and "Flash Mob," with Farrell musing aloud about space travel and parties among the planets.

Just when it seemed the 33,000 brave souls who endured another scorching day had nothing left in them — although, surprisingly, only 60 people were treated for heat over the course of the weekend — Montreal's Arcade Fire turned up the temperature another notch. Dressed in black like an Amish party band, the nine-piece group played a manic set of songs from their 2004 debut, Funeral. Singer Win Butler was treated like a conquering hero when he jumped into the audience after a lovely extended take on "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)," wading all the way to the rear as the crowd parted before him and offered hundreds of sweaty high fives and hugs.

Unlike Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara (who succumbed to the heat during their set), Las Vegas' Killers seemed unfazed by the setting sun's glare as natty singer Brandon Flowers worked the stage in a plaid jacket over a black T-shirt and tight black pants. He barely broke a sweat during "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" and worked what looked like the weekend's biggest crowd into a frenzy during their hit "Smile."

Though Flowers and company were wisely booked for the day after their nemeses in the Bravery, you could be forgiven for thinking things were going to get ugly when Jonestown Massacre's Newcombe was spotted sitting onstage during the Dandy Warhols' set of droning freak rock. Although portrayed as his arch enemies in last year's acclaimed rock documentary, "Dig," the Portland band invited Newcombe to join them for a long rambling take on the Massacre's "Oh Lord" and "Jesus," thus confounding at least some Dandy fans.

Farrell was surely smiling somewhere as the sticky night ended with Death Cab for Cutie's emo anthems and Widespread Panic's second set of extended improv rock bouncing off one another from opposite ends of the park. He'd earlier envisaged a satellite party in space, and now, rather than emptying out into a generic parking lot, his people were instead wandering through Grant Park's urban oasis, stopping to gaze at majestic Buckingham Fountain's changing colors and temporarily transforming at least one corner of Chicago into an earthbound version of his cosmic dream.

You've got to give it to Louis XIV — they sure know their debauchery. The band recently shot two versions of its latest video, "God Killed the Queen": one that's considered "clean," and one that would be rated "R" — for rampant nudity.

The two-minute clip for "God Killed the Queen," directed by Made by Robots, was shot in a vintage broadcast video format used for television sitcoms in the late '60s and early '70s. It attempts to imagine what the glam-punk world of Iggy Pop, the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols would have been like if Louis XIV had been a part of it, playing CBGBs or partying at the Chelsea Hotel along with them. The lighting is also vintage, with lots of lens flare and rich color tones.

(Click here for images of "God Killed the Queen.")

Dressed in button-down shirts, ties and heavy eyeliner, the band is subdued onstage while chaos is all around — people write graffiti on the walls, make out and pass out as nude women cavort suggestively and let people write on their bare backs. The clean version is nipple-free, but enough can be seen to give the video a voyeuristic element, as if this is just what to expect when you go backstage at a Louis XIV show. Those who want to find out will get their chance when the band's tour kicks off in Indianapolis on July 22.

"God Killed the Queen" isn't the San Diego band's first skin-heavy shoot. Earlier this year, porn director Eon McKai made a video for their song "Paper Doll" that consisted entirely of models from the punk pinup site SuicideGirls.com getting dressed and undressed.

Lil' Kim had been expected to appear in court Friday morning (June 24) in New York for sentencing, but the hearing has been bumped back to July 6. The Queen Bee was convicted on March 17 of perjury and conspiracy, for lying to investigators and to a federal grand jury about her involvement in a shooting four years ago at New York hip-hop station Hot 97. ...

Velvet Revolver recently teamed with veteran video director Wayne Isham to shoot a clip for "Come on Come In," the first single from the "Fantastic Four" soundtrack, due July 5. The video combines performance footage and movie clips with Dali-esque abstract portraits of each bandmember. ... "American Idol" season-four finalist Anwar Robinson is already several songs in on an album he plans to shop later this summer. "I wrote a lot of songs when I was away [shooting 'Idol']," he said. "I want to release a single in the fall and a full-length in the spring." ... Louis XIV, the Dead 60s, Tegan and Sara, Robbers on High Street and Longwave are among the more than 500 acts slated to perform at this year's Midwest Music Summit, scheduled for July 21 to 23 in Indianapolis. VHS or Beta, the French Kicks and a Burn It Down reunion are also on the bill, available in its entirety at MidwestMusicSummit.com. ...

DJ Kay Slay debuted the first record from Mobb Deep since they aligned themselves with 50 Cent during his "Drama Hour" radio show. The song is called "Outta Control" and features 50 on a verse and on the hook. ... Someone get Omar Rodriguez-Lopez some Pepto. According to the Mars Volta's Web site, the band has canceled the remainder of its current European tour, as the amply afroed guitarist's been experiencing abdominal pain — so bad that it's "hampering his live performance." Rodriguez-Lopez is seeking medical attention for his aching abdomen. ... The New York Yankees have arranged a meeting between closer Mariano Rivera and Metallica frontman James Hetfield. The two will meet at Yankee Stadium before Friday night's Subway Series game between the New York Mets and the Yanks, The New York Times reports. Whenever Rivera enters a game at the Stadium, he does so with Metallica's "Enter Sandman" blaring over the ballpark's loudspeakers. ...

Stooges fans who couldn't bear making it through the overwhelming seven-disc 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions box set from 2000 can breathe a sigh of relief. A more manageable two-disc deluxe version of their 1970 album, and a similar reissue of the Stooges' self-titled 1969 debut will be available from Rhino on August 16. Expanded and remastered, The Stooges features 10 previously unreleased tracks, and Fun House culls 14 tracks from the aforementioned out-of-print collection. ... Brian May has let the cat out of the bag on his Web site: A contemporary Queen covers disc, Killer Queen: A Tribute to Queen, will be released by Hollywood Records on August 2. While a spokesperson for the label said some artists are still being confirmed for the final track list, artists who have recorded songs already include the Flaming Lips ("Bohemian Rhapsody"), Eleven featuring Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme ("Stone Cold Crazy"), Gavin DeGraw ("We Are the Champions") and Sum 41 ("Killer Queen"). Other artists expected to participate include Jon Brion, Breaking Benjamin, Jason Mraz, Joss Stone and Rooney. ...

Stick Figure Productions, the New York production company behind the HBO reality series "Family Bonds," is casting a new reality show that'll give one lucky music lover the chance to be his or her own Tommy Mottola. "The Biz" will pit music industry wannabes against one another, in a competition that will land the winner their own record label, an imprint of the Warner Music Group. The show is seeking men and women 18 to 35 who "have tons of personality, an undying love for music, and want more than anything to break into the music industry." Interested? Send an e-mail to thebiz@stickfigureproductions.com with a photo and all your vitals. ... Despite the loss of drummer Nick Jago, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are still riding strong. A stripped-down and semi-acoustic affair, the group's third disc, Howl, is due August 23. The 13-track album features the single "Ain't No Easy Way," and the album opener "Shuffle Your Feet" is already available via Europe's version of iTunes. ...

This week, Carrie Underwood became the ninth "American Idol" contestant to debut at #1 as a solo performer on the Billboard Hot 100, following Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Kimberley Locke, Josh Gracin, Fantasia, Diana DeGarmo and, of course, William Hung. First-week sales of Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven"/"Independence Day" came in at 170,000, more than previous winner Fantasia's 142,000, but below Studdard's 286,000, Clarkson's 236,000 and Aiken's 393,000. The single, which is now the best-selling song of 2005 to date, also topped the Pop 100, the Singles Sales and the Country Singles charts. Bo Bice's version of "Inside Your Heaven" will appear on next week's chart. ...

Audioslave have been added to the Berlin Live 8 bill, which already includes Green Day, Lauryn Hill, Brian Wilson, Roxy Music, and A-ha. The concert is scheduled to take place July 2. ... If you've ever dreamed of scoring a date with Alicia Keys or Halle Berry, now's your chance. The two superstars are lending a hand to the first online auction by Frum Tha Ground Up, a nonprofit organization that aims to help teens find the motivation and self-esteem they need to succeed in life. Up for grabs is a private lunch with Berry on the set of "X-Men 3," a day on the Hawaii set of ABC's hit show "Lost," and a date to accompany Morgan Freeman to the premiere of his new movie "An Unfinished Life." You can also nab tickets to Keys' upcoming MTV Unplugged performance in New York with accommodations at her personal suite at the Chambers Hotel, followed by a private catered dessert-tasting with the singer after the show. Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the uncensored, never-before-seen "Tupac Shakur: Live at the House of Blues" not only in DVD form, but also as a CD and UMD — which is Sony PlayStation Portable-compatible. The concert took place in Los Angeles on July 4, 1996, and features guest appearances by Snoop Dogg and the Outlawz. ... Madonna has unveiled an exclusive sneak peek at her forthcoming Re-Invention Tour documentary, "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret," via her Web site. The 30-second teaser showcases the Material Mom's voice more than her face, with the singer speaking over very brief and sporadic shots highlighting her career. "No matter what you did, no matter who you are, no matter where you come from," she says, "you can always change and become a better version of yourself." Madonna has also been hard at work in the studio recording tracks for her 10th studio album, set to drop in late November. ...

O.C. art-punks Thrice have settled on a title for their new album, and boy, is it unintelligible. It's called Vheissu, which, according to a hyperbolic press release, is drawn from "the loose collection of arcane myths found in 'V.,' Thomas Pynchon's classic underground novel of 1963," but could also be an off-handed reference to "Vesuvius, cited by Virgil as the entrance to the maze of the underworld" or "one critic's dissection of the word Vheissu — 'Wie hesst du?' which in German means 'What are you called?' or 'What is your name?' " Either way, it's due in stores in September. In the meantime, Thrice will join up with the Warped Tour on Wednesday, with plans for a headlining tour to follow. ... The Bloodhound Gang will release their follow-up to 2000's Hooray for Boobies on September 13. The album, Hefty Fine, features a track called "Pennsylvania," which the band is lobbying to make their home state's new official state song. Bam Margera is running the band's campaign, which will include a performance August 6 at the sixth Rolling Rock Town Fair in Jennerstown, Pennsylvania. Supporters can check out PennsylvaniaStateSong.com. ...

Twista and Swizz Beatz are joining "Scrubs" actor Donald Faison and Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom for an all-star celebrity three-on-three basketball tournament for charity. The inaugural Lincoln Park Music Jam, which will take place in Queens, New York, on July 9, will benefit Cathy's Kids Foundation, a nonprofit which helps underprivileged youth in New York and Los Angeles. ... Hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow will be inducted on Sunday into the Bronx Walk of Fame — part of a weeklong celebration of the New York borough.
Killers, Louis XIV Get Busy At The Back Of The Tour Bus

Louis XIV frontman Jason Hill has many talents, including being able to take the stage at various summer festivals decked out in super-hot suits yet never seeming to sweat, and looking incredibly like a young Ozzy.

He's also quite the networker, as evidenced by his recent friendship with Killers singer Brandon Flowers, which actually began back when Louis were just an unsigned act looking to hit the road for the first time (see "Louis XIV: Killers-Endorsed Quartet With King-Sized Egos").

"The Killers actually asked us to tour with them when they were just breaking. The first day they got a tour bus was the first day we were on tour with them," Hill explained. "They just liked our music and we were an unsigned band at the time, and we hit it off because for one, our music isn't like anyone else's out there, and we can pretty much play with anybody. And also because the crowds really liked us both, so they asked us to do this run of shows."

That run of shows came to an end at this past weekend's Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta, where both Louis XIV and the Killers shared the stage with a host of acts, ranging from Biz Markie and Public Enemy to the White Stripes and the Pixies. But just because the road trip has ended doesn't mean that the burgeoning friendship between the San Diego rockers and the shimmering Vegas synth-masters is finished; in fact, both acts have been recording songs together, including a couple of tunes that sprouted from some serious late-night tour-bus jam sessions between Hill and Flowers.

"I've been recording here in the back of the bus over the last couple of nights with Brandon from the Killers," Hill said while reclining in his bus this past weekend. "We've been sitting back here recording a couple new tracks. One of them is going to be on their new record, and it's just phenomenal.

"One song — I'm not going to say what it is — is a cover song that I did with all strings, and I brought it on and had Brandon sing the first verse on it. The person who wrote it all those years ago, I want him to sing on it too," Hill continued. "And the other one was a song that Brandon had started writing. And I'm just helping him record that one, and I play guitar on it."

And while he might not be totally forthcoming with song titles, Hill did spill the beans on a couple of his collaborative cohorts.

"We had [Killers drummer] Ronnie [Vannucci] set up his drum kit back here, in this 2 foot by 2 foot area, and play drums. It was about 4 in the morning and I just got it in my head that we needed drums on the track," he said. "And we'll probably get [Killers guitarist] David [Keuning] and [bassist] Mark [Stoermer] to be on the song too."

Neither band's reps seemed to have any idea that the collaboration was happening, but don't be surprised if you hear more Louis/ Killers tunes in the future. It's not like Hill needs a whole lot of time or space to get a song down on tape.

"I've never recorded in a proper studio, just little rooms here or there, and I love going into a room without any idea of what we're going to do and just making it up. I love that more than anything," he laughed.
