Foo Fighters, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne Recognize EDM At Grammys

EDM's road to the mainstream limelight hit a high on Sunday (February 12) when David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Deadmau5 and, most surprisingly, the Foo Fighters joined together at the 54th Grammy Awards to pay tribute to electronic music.

Introduced by host LL Cool J, Chris Brown made his way through a sea of audience members, donning his best Run DMC gear. Leaving the dancing to the crowd, Breezy crooned to the tune of his David Guetta collaboration "I Can Only Imagine" as the DJ/producer jumped behind his turntables set. But the star power didn't stop there: Lil Wayne appeared shortly after to spit his verse of the duet amid the flashing neon backdrop and jumping fans. Once the song ended, smoke filled the air and the other side of the stage lit up to reveal the Foo Fighters. As they previously revealed to MTV News, the rock group left the dancing to the pros and stuck to what they're good at: rocking out. Marking their second performance of the night, the band performed their single "Rope," before transitioning into Deadmau5's glow-in-the-dark light set. At the time of the performance, the Foos had already nabbed four awards, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, Best Hard/Rock Metal Performance and Best Long Form Music Video. MTV News recently caught up with frontman Dave Grohl, who confessed that there isn't much of a gap between the Foos' rock and the electronic genre. Here we go again. Hours before Lil Wayne and the Throne face off in the Grammy battle for Best Rap Album at Sunday night's (February 12) awards show, Weezy threw shots during YMCMB's pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

After receiving some new sales plaques for his wall, announcing that he had signed R&B singer Christina Milian and paying homage to the late Whitney Houston, Wayne dropped an a cappella freestyle directed at Jay-Z and Kanye West. "I met a bad red bone, I took the bi--- home/ I asked her what she want to watch, she said, 'Surely not the Throne,' " Weezy spit before he dropped the mic and moseyed offstage, according to Rap Radar. Things began to sour after a 2009 interview in which Cash Money CEO Bryan "Birdman" Williams objected to Jay-Z taking the crown for MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game" list for that year. "I don't think he the #1 MC, in no kinda way," Baby said, casting the first stone. "Wayne is the best, he do the most and he make the most money. I don't think no n---a in the business make more money than us." Jay returned fire at the top of 2011. On the Throne's "H.A.M.," Jigga made it clear that not only was Birdman, a.k.a. Baby, and Wayne not holding any Hov-caliber bucks, but that financially they couldn't even compare to his wife, Beyoncé. "I'm like, 'Really, half-a-billi?' N---a, really, you got Baby money/ Keep it real with n---as, n---as ain't got my lady money," Jay rhymed. Not to be outdone, Weezy waited a few months, but responded in August of last year on "It's Good," a track from his Tha Carter IV LP, which also featured Jadakiss and Drake. "Talkin' 'bout Baby money? I got your Baby money/ Kidnap yo' bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money," Wayne rapped in direct response to Jay's "H.A.M." line. Hova didn't seem too bothered by the line. In an October interview with MTV News, Jay brushed off Weezy's shot on "It's Good." "That's sport, that's rap music," Jay said. "Nothing is going to change but the participants." On Christmas Day, Tunechi and Jay's Throne partner, Kanye West, were spotted together at an L.A. Lakers basketball game, so the rap tit-for-tat can't be too serious. However, it will be interesting to see if either Jay or Yeezy respond to Wayne's latest jab. Whatever the case, if either the Throne or Weezy win the Best Rap Album award at the Grammys, you can bet the hip-hop world will be paying extra special attention to the acceptance speech.

Get your glow sticks ready for the Grammys: Another fist-pumping performance has been announced for Sunday's show. Previously announced performers Chris Brown and the Foo Fighters will join fellow nominees Lil Wayne and EDM superstars deadmau5 and David Guetta for a genre-busting performance that will highlight dance/electronica music.

This marks the first time the Grammys have shed light on the increasingly popular genre, which has recently seeped into every form of music. The performance will take place in a tent outside Staples Center. The announcement comes on the same day it was confirmed that Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt will head up a tribute to late soul singer Etta James and Nicki Minaj revealed she will perform a spankin'-new track, "Roman Holiday," when she takes the Grammy stage. MTV News will be on hand at the Grammys for the MTV News Pre-Show, hosted by Sway Calloway and James Montgomery. With so many artists set to appear at the show, including Katy Perry, Drake, Fergie, Bruce Springsteen, Adele, Rihanna, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson and host LL Cool J, stay tuned to our live stream on MTV.com, starting at 5 p.m. ET Sunday, to get all the scoop from all the biggest stars in the music industry. Def Jam wasn't the only label courting 2 Chainz. Before he signed to the rap powerhouse, the Atlanta MC was arguably the most sought-after unsigned talent in the game, so it's no surprise that he was in high demand. Still, if Lil Wayne had had his way, 2 Chainz would've linked up with his Young Money record label.

"I was one of the first people invited to Young Money, before the album. Wayne asked me," Chainz said when he appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live." The two spitters have history. Weezy appeared with 2 Chainz (then known as Tity Boi) on "Duffle Bag Boy," the 2007 single with his group Playaz Circle. Two years later, Dos spent significant time on the road with Tunechi during his I Am Still Music Tour. At the time, however, 2 Chainz chose to remain loyal to Playaz Circle and honor his deal with Ludacris' Disturbing Tha Peace record label. Ultimately, he didn't want to seem like he was hopping from label to label, though he maintains that he and Wayne have a true friendship. "From the outside looking in, I hate to see people look like they clique hopping," Chainz said. "But when you just look at an artist that went from here to this subsidiary, to this subsidiary — for me I felt like I'm smart enough to sign 2 Chainz slash Def Jam like I did." Instead of signing to another artist, with Def Jam the "Spend It" MC was able to become his own boss and partner his new label T.R.U. with the deep-rooted record company. As soon as he signed, Chainz sent Wayne a text thanking him for being a true friend. "Lil Wayne is one of the realest dudes in the game as far as opening up doors for people to eat and trickling down to their families," he said. "He's one of the most unselfish, talented people that I've been around."

Lil Wayne has always put his music first, but Weezy's passion for his skateboard may come in a close second. Tunechi was pretty bummed when he learned he had to stay off the ramps for a week after injuring his shoulder in a skateboarding accident at his Miami home.

"Unfortunately I was skating and I tried to do an ollie down one of my banks and I tailed out at the end of it," Weezy said in a clip from DJ Scoob Doo's upcoming "The Nino Brown Story" DVD that was given exclusively to MTV News. On Sunday, Weezy put out the third installment of his viral video series "Weezy's Sports Corner," sitting in front of the camera with his arm in a sling. In the clip provided to MTV News, the Young Money boss broke down the injury. "I kinda didn't separate it — hopefully I didn't separate my shoulder, but if it was separated I wouldn't be able to move it," he said, showing off his new Trukfit tee for the camera. "I probably strained a muscle. I don't know the name of the muscle, my therapist told me the name of it — I'm not sure. We were thinking I probably sprained the muscle, which is like a slight tear, which will probably take a few days to heal. A few days and I'll be back." Looks like Wayne is already back. On Wednesday Justin Bieber tweeted a picture of him and Wayne standing by a skating ramp, though it is unclear whether Weezy actually got on a board or whether he is wearing his sling. It's not the injury that has him down. In August 2011, Weezy had to get nine stitches after a skating accident in St. Louis during his I Am Still Music Tour. But that spill didn't keep Weezy off the ramps. "I ain't worried about the pain, it hurts like hell but the worst thing is that I couldn't really skate," he said. "I always get injured but I never get an injury where I can't get back on the board. Remember we had the nine stitches? That didn't mean we couldn't skate the next day, so we skated the next day."

Justin Bieber Gets Studio Visit From Lil Wayne

Justin Bieber knows a thing or two about "swag," so it's no surprise that the one and only Lil Wayne visited the young star while he was deep in the recording process for his next album, Believe.

"Good time in the studio last night. back at it tonight. oh yeah...and big bro came thru...," Bieber tweeted, linking to a photo of him and Weezy chilling out and skateboarding together. In case his fans didn't get the message, he followed it up with another tweet and picture: "and when i say big bro i mean @LilTunechi . #BELIEVE IT #family." While it's unknown whether Wayne will appear on Bieber's album, a certain super-producer is definitely in the mix, according to another tweet: "in the studio with @timbaland and the crew. #creating... got a lot of things i want to write about. ready to make music." Bieber has said he hopes his new album will have a Justin Timberlake vibe, similar to what Timbaland created on FutureSex/LoveSounds. And for those wondering how it all went in the studio, Bieber's longtime manager, Scooter Braun, filled fans in. "got great reports on the first night with @justinbieber and@timbaland," Braun tweeted. "Exciting stuff. heard YMCMB stopped by too. gonna be interesting."

Believe is set to drop later this year. Bieber has already worked with Black Eyed Peas mastermind will.i.am, who will reportedly produce a song for the album. Whether Weezy will have any part on the album, Bieber has said he's been in talks with other MCs, like pal Drake and Kanye West, to make appearances on the album. "The only conversation we've had about Justin's album that we're about to do is, it's really important that it's the proper transition, because we've seen him [with] 'Baby,' now we're watching him grow up," vocal producer Kuk Harrell told MTV News. "And we can't just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There's a record in between." What are you expecting from Bieber's next album? Lil Wayne isn't done with Tha Carter IV just yet. The last time we saw a visual from Weezy's double-platinum opus was August, but on Tuesday (January 31), Mr. Carter followed up his "How to Love" video and dropped a clip for "Mirror," his collaboration with Bruno Mars.

In the vide, which was directed by filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, Weezy begins alone in a studio, shirtless with his long locks flowing. The camera zooms in, focusing in on the Martian's key ink, like the "Fear God" tattoo on his eyelids and the "Baby" tat on his right arm, which pays homage to Cash Money's CEO and Wayne's father figure, Birdman. The somber track, produced by REO of the Soundkillers opens with operatic wails and a shimmering hi-hat before Wayne starts rapping: "With everything happening today, you don't really know if you're coming or goin'/ But you think that you're on your way, life lined up on the mirror don't blow it." It all builds rather slowly. As Wayne's first verse begins to take form, so does the visual. We look on as the Young Money superstar starts spray-painting, dabbling with red ink on an unseen canvas. Mars sits atop a prop ladder, bellowing his warm and introspective vocals: "Mirror on the wall, here we are again/ Through my rise and fall, you are my only friend." As the story pushes on, Weezy begins to add color, mixing his red base with black-and-white splashes. Still, there is no reveal, just slight glimpses of Wayne's art. The rapper is onto something, however, because every now and again, he stops to marvel at his own creation. When the song draws to a close, Tunechi stands with his arms spread in triumph — the painting is finally done. With the song's closing chords, the masterpiece is finally unveiled, and in a true moment of self-examination, Wayne stares at the canvas. Who is the painting of? Lil Wayne To Release Prison Memoir In November

Lil Wayne has a story to tell. Well, Lil Wayne probably has a bunch of stories to tell, but this fall the multiplatinum rap superstar will release "Gone Till November," his memoir based on the diaries he kept while he was locked up for eight months on Rikers Island in New York. The book, which will come out in November, two years after Weezy's release from prison, is being described as an internal monologue, according to the Associated Press. It will be released through Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group. Weezy was freed from Rikers Island on November 4, 2010, after he served eight months of a year-long sentence for an attempted gun possession charge. Police had arrested the rapper in 2007 following his headlining performance at New York's Beacon Theatre. Wayne eventually pleaded guilty to the charge and turned himself in to authorities in March of 2010.

MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway caught up with Wayne in Miami at a welcome-home party just days after his prison release. When asked how his transition from prison was going, Weezy simply responded with a grin. "I forgot about yesterday," he said after thanking his fans and family for their support. He hasn't completely forgotten, however, now that Wayne, who has since toured the world and released his double-platinum Tha Carter IV, plans to reminisce a little. It's a common misconception that going to jail can make a rapper hot. Other than Tupac, who emerged from his mid-1990s prison bid a bigger star than he was when he went in, most artists struggle to develop post-prison musical dominance: Shyne has yet to capitalize on his almost nine-year bid, Gucci Mane has spent most of the year behind bars, and T.I. is just now starting to put his troubles behind him.
Credit Lil Wayne with beating the odds and becoming one of MTV News' #3 Top Newsmaker of the Year. When you think of the Best Artists of 2011 — Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry, the Throne — none of them had to face what Wayne did. It was November 4, 2010, when Weezy was released from his eight-month prison bid for attempted gun possession — not much time to prepare for the year to come. Still, when it was all said and done, Wayne's Tha Carter IV dominated charts, and his I Am Still Music Tour — which consisted of 78 shows across Africa, Australia and North America — grossed more than $47 million. Weezy practically lived on the Billboard charts, and Nicki Minaj and Drake, two artists signed to his Young Money record label, left a huge stamp on the past 12 months as well. Not long after the curtain closed on 2010, fans were anticipating Tha Carter IV. And while it took a little longer than first predicted, Wayne was far from a musical recluse. On January 3, Chris Brown tweeted a link to his now-omnipresent hit "Look at Me Now," and while the spacey smash might have been a winner on its own, Wayne's appearance on the third verse damn-near guaranteed tens of thousands of radio spins. In March, Tunechi premiered his "Inception"-inspired Carter IV video for "6 Foot 7 Foot" on MTV. A few weeks later, MTV News was there as the YM general opened his I Am Still Music Tour in Rhode Island, and we checked in on him as he eventually took his concert across the world. Weezy's live show set him apart from the rest of the year's artists. Aside from his own tour, MTV saw Wayne play Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and Bamboozle, and he even had his own "MTV Unplugged" special in June. Oh yeah, and Tunechi closed out this year's MTV Video Music Awards with a rocked-out stage show.
Then, when the moment of truth finally arrived, Weezy dropped Tha Carter IV on August 29, and fans ate it up — 964,000 of them during its first week on shelves. Of course, we partied with him the night of the album's release. It's hard to deny a guy who dominated radio with his own singles ("How to Love" and "She Will") as well as with songs he was featured on (Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," Kelly Rowland's "Motivation" and DJ Khaled's "I'm On One"). It's hard to deny a guy who mixed rap, rock and pop in his 2011 live shows, bringing fans of multiple genres together. And it's hard to deny a guy who guided the careers of both Nicki Minaj and Drake — two superstars in their own right. There is no science to why Wayne is so successful. Artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West or Katy Perry and Britney Spears come off as far more calculated, while most times, Weezy seemingly wings it. What other MC would wear animal-print jeggings during the VMAs just minutes before his album is released? Tune doesn't care, though. It's Wayne's world, and we all just live in it. As promised, Ke$ha and her boys Lil Wayne, T.I., Wiz Khalifa and Andre 3000 dropped a new remix of "Sleazy" on Tuesday (December 13).
The Bangladesh-produced song originally appeared on K-Dollar's 2010 Cannibal album before a remix featuring Andre popped up earlier this year. The latest version of the song is available for purchase and is all over blogs like Rap-Up.com. The song gets a bit dirtier and introspective thanks to verses from the guys that play up the track's bumping beat. Wiz kicks it off, rapping about designer clothes and his lady love, Amber Rose. "OK, I'm young and I'm tatted/ I get them bucks like an addict/ Rocking this Christian Dior/ I spend so much on my fabric/ I got a wifey at home/ And what she wants she can have it," he spits before going on about chilling on the beach, being rich and his prowess in the bedroom. Sitting in between Wiz and Tip is Andre's recycled verse, before T.I. gets his shot and gets sexy, asking Ke$ha, "Do you know what to do with me?" before he launches into a verse all about how good he is to the ladies. "Bad bitches know me/ So don't bother introducing me/ They want me more than diamonds," he brags before explaining that it has a lot to do with his impressive anatomy. Wayne closes it out, adding his own signature flair. "We be on that sh-- that no one be on/ That's what we on/ Smoke that neon, Kings of Leon/ Dynamite, Napoleon/ Got some skinnies and a tee on/ And some Vans," he rhymes about his famous sense of Weezy-fied style before the song circles back to the funky chorus, where Ke$ha declares that she doesn't "need you or your brand-new Benz/ Or your bougie friends/ I don't need love lookin' like diamonds/ Lookin' like diamonds." If any of K's fans or critics were wondering if she has the swagger to chill with the guys, she displayed some of her sass when she tweeted about the remix. "Question ANIMALS ... who can say they got with Lil Wayne, T.I., Andre 3000 and Wiz Khalifa on a f---ing hot track??" she asked. "ill give u one clue ... Its $."
