Ludacris Welcomes Lil Scrappy To His Disturbing Tha Peace Family

'He never got the shot he needed to get,' says Jeff Dixon, co-CEO of DTP.

On Sunday night at Atlanta's Philips Arena, Ludacris announced that Lil Scrappy has joined his Disturbing Tha Peace label. And Scrappy won't be alone; he'll be bringing his own artists.

Jeff Dixon, co-CEO of DTP, said he and his family hope to make Scrappy into the next Luda — meaning he'll be successful artistically and business-wise.

"We're just excited to sign him because he's been in the game for a long time and he never got the shot he needed to get," Dixon said. "He has exciting music. ... He brings another dynamic to our label. We're adding another dimension."

Dixon told us Scrappy's next album, on which Ludacris will serve as a co-executive producer, should be out sometime in September. This summer, Scrappy could be featured on a probable DTP tour. Until then, Scrap will be dropping mixtapes, appearing on albums from Luda and DTP labelmate Willy Northpole and shooting a film.

On Sunday night, Ludacris and T.I. were special guests at Young Jeezy's show. Shortly after being introduced to the crowd, 'Cris brought out Scrappy and revealed to the crowd that his newest signee's deal had been inked a week before. Scrappy performed his own mini-set as well.

The last time Scrappy dropped a album was in late 2007, when he released his Bred 2 Die Born 2 Live under Lil Jon's imprint. That project was originally announced as a joint venture between Jon and 50 Cent's G-Unit but was delayed a few times and never really took off despite a club hit, "Money in the Bank." Scrappy was introduced to the world in 2004 with the King of Crunk & the BME Recordings Present Lil' Scrappy. That project was shared with Jon's other group at the time, Trillville.

Is Christina Aguilera planning to model her home life after "The Osbournes"? Ozzy and Sharon reportedly told U.K. tabloid The Sun that the singer has purchased their Beverly Hills mansion — they also apparently revealed that Jack had a relationship of sorts with Paris Hilton. But back to Christina (please!), New York Post's "Page Six" reports that it's only a matter of time before Xtina confirms that she's pregnant. "She's been telling friends," according to the gossip column's source, who estimates that "she has to be three months [along] now." ...

"Page Six" also reports that Lindsay Lohan is staying in rehab for the long haul. "She is staying in Promises for longer than a month. We don't know how much longer because of her work schedule, but she is taking rehab very seriously this time and not messing around." ...

Vibe reports that the Game and Lil Scrappy got into a verbal altercation backstage at Atlanta's Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash on Saturday, after Game dissed G-Unit during his set. "The Game was onstage saying 'G-Unot' and the crowd was saying it with him," according to Vibe's source. "That is basically disrespecting Lil Scrappy [a G-Unit ally] in his own hometown." ...

Forgot about Sanjaya? The "American Idol" castoff still has big plans. "My first objective is to legitimize my music, then do modeling and acting" he told Steppin' Out magazine (via New York's Daily News "Rush & Malloy" column). And fans of Sanjaya's beautiful sister Shyamali (who was cut from "Idol" in the early rounds) shouldn't expect to see much more of her soon. Though the one-time Hooters girl has been offered nude magazine layouts, "she was never the type to flaunt it," according to Sanjaya. ...

Snoop Dogg is playing a handful of SoCal shows next week to warm him up for an overseas tour, LiveDaily reports. The rapper, who will also perform July 1 at Live Earth Hamburg, will play in Anaheim on Monday, L.A. on Tuesday and San Diego on Wednesday. ...

Clive Owen has another (presumably less Looney) job lined up, starring as private eye Phillip Marlowe in Frank Miller's adaptation of Raymond Chandler's noir novella "Trouble Is My Business," Variety reports. "Frank Miller knows more about noir than anyone I have ever met," Owen said. ... In other movie news, a "Page Six" spy reports that Avril Lavigne is in talks with Sony BMG to play "kind of a white-trash girl" in a "thriller feature film." ...

Tickets are available for five Prince shows at the Blossom Ballroom in Hollywood's Roosevelt Hotel — but prices have jumped a bit from his run of London performances. While about $65 (31.21 British pounds) would get you in to see one of his 21 gigs in the U.K., the decimal point has moved for these U.S. shows (set for June 23-24 and June 28-30). Also due Tuesday: 'Dreamgirls' soundtrack, 30 Seconds to Mars, Lil Scrappy, Metallica, Cure, Too Short, Tristeza.

Gwen Dolin': Gwen Stefani snagged Pharrell — not to mention Akon, No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal and Depeche Mode's Martin Gore — for her second solo affair, The Sweet Escape. But fans who want to hear a little more of Mr. Williams had the opportunity to get the original Neptunes mix of "Wind It Up" via the iTunes preorder, which also carried live audio and video versions of the track. And if you find yourself traveling to the U.K. anytime soon, you might want to get the edition that's appearing there: It's bolstered by another bonus tune, "Orange County Girl."

Girl Power: Stefani should do a bang-up job on the charts this week, but in case she doesn't, there's another leading lady reppin': Ciara. The Evolution zeroes in on the singer as an artist, as she co-wrote and co-produced every track on the LP — though she did get powerhouse producers Rodney Jerkins, Will.I.Am, Lil Jon, Dallas Austin and Pharrell to help her grow up. In case that's not enough, the CD boasts guest spots by 50 Cent and Chamillionaire — not to mention a limited-edition bonus DVD featuring dance instructions for two tracks, behind-the-scenes action and more.

And while "Dreamgirls" is getting lots of Oscar buzz, the female-fronted flick gets an extra lift with two versions of the soundtrack, both reaching stores this week. The standard version has 20 tracks sung by Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and even Eddie Murphy, as well as a 36-page lyric and photo book. It's nothing but a dream.

In-House Competition: Ciara is not the only challenger Gwen's facing this week: On the DVD front, she's also going head-to-head with five artists who are also on Interscope/Geffen/A&M's sprawling roster.

Black Eyed Peas have been around for a good 15 years or so, but surprisingly, "Live From Sydney to Vegas" is their first live-performance DVD. It's jammed with 70 minutes of Fergie, Will.I.Am and company phunking up Sydney, as well as a unique bonus feature that lets you toggle between the Sydney and Las Vegas performances of select songs as they play out. For good measure, the disc has two exclusive videos of unreleased Monkey Business tracks.

Pussycat Dolls' "Live From London" is the first live-performance DVD by that group too, and in addition to seven songs the ladies strutted through in the titular city, it's got five music videos and up-close-and-personal footage galore.

On the rock front, the Cure's "Festival 2005" corrals a whopping 30 performances by the unconquerable goths and includes material captured by fans. Rise Against's "Generation Lost" only has five live performances in comparison but also encompasses the career-reviewing documentary "How We Survive," four videos and two making-of clips.

Rounding out the competition is Sheryl Crow's "Wildflower Tour: Live From New York" DVD, which has 17 performances by the 44-year-old singer/songwriter.

Heavy Viewing for Your Pleasure: Video racks are getting stuffed with even more visual treats this week too, courtesy some volume-11 acts.

Metallica's "The Videos: 1989-2004" is loaded, you might say, with 20 videos by the metal titans, as well as bonus versions of two tracks. Also included is the trailer for the unforgettable documentary "Some Kind of Monster."

Slipknot's "Voliminal: Inside the Nine" is even more packed. The first disc is a 90-minute film drummer M. Shawn "Clown" Crahan caught on hand-held cameras. That DVD also has nine "rabbit holes" — a.k.a. Easter eggs. The second one has a wide range of live footage, videos and bandmember interviews, as well as an intimate look at the masks the nonet used on its most recent tour.

Look underground and you'll find Botch's "061502," which immortalizes the June 15, 2002, performance at Seattle's Showbox that marked the hardcore heroes' demise. To make matters better, there's also commentary on the gig; five additional cuts from a Bellingham, Washington, show; the video for "St. Matthew Returns to the Womb"; and a bonus CD with the Seattle stuff.

The Rap Wrap: One of the most talked-about mixtapes in ages, Eminem Presents: The Re-Up also hits stores this week. Originally envisioned as a mixtape to launch Stat Quo, Ca$his and Bobby Creekwater — not as a Proof tribute CD, as some had claimed — the all-star disc features Em himself, 50 Cent and Obie Trice.

Em was supposed to appear on Lil Scrappy's Bred 2 Die, Born 2 Live, which also streets this week, but while 50 Cent is all over it, Slim sat this one out. The crunk-a-licious sophomore also assembled Lil Jon, Three 6 Mafia, Yung Joc, Jazze Pha, Yo Gotti and Young Buck for his first Reprise release.

Project Pat tells a new tale in Crook by Da Book: The Fed Story, a 20-track narrative that begins with "I Ain't Going Back to Jail" and ends with "Been Gettin' Money." Three 6 Mafia turn up on two slices, while Young Jeezy, Beanie Sigel and Lyfe Jennings lend Pat a hand elsewhere.

Too Short's career gets a look-see with the unfortunately titled The Mack of the Century ... Greatest Hits, which makes it sound like the still-active rapper retired last decade (or just started making music during this one — also untrue). The straightforward CD cobbles together 13 hits.

Not to be overlooked is J Xavier, who dropped the "Lil' " from his name before dropping his new Young Prince of Tha South. The 14-year-old, who recently toured with Chris Brown and Ne-Yo, managed to rope in Mike Jones, Lil' Keke and even George Clinton for his LP, which features a song that's actually called "I Love My Music."

Just Wait One Second ...: 30 Seconds to Mars are celebrating the unexpected success of their second LP, A Beautiful Lie, with a deluxe version of the 2005 release. The bonus DVD has a medley of material, including footage from their "$2 Bill Concert" for MTV2 to their arrival on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet to fan interviews and more. Neat-o, Leto.

It's all right here, on this "WTF?" collection of 12 exclusive recordings. Also featured are Mates of States running through Phantom Planet's "California," MTV You Hear It First rockers Tally Hall taking on the Killers' "Smile Like You Mean It" and Rock Kills Kid chiming in with their rendition of Spoon's "I Turn My Camera On." Now that was unexpected.

Rob Da Bank & Chris Coco's Listen Again: Here's another provocative comp, this one a two-disc smorgasbord of the BBC Radio One DJs' favorite tunes of late. Taste-making tracks by José González, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Hard-Fi and Gogol Bordello brighten up the set, as do exclusive live recordings from Arab Strap, James Yorkston and King Creosote.

Tristeza's En Nuestro Desafío: Stop crying, Tristeza fans: A DVD by your favorite San Diego somnambulists has finally arrived. And better yet, it's only the corollary to a brand-new album. Moving from ambient sounds to more of a lo-fi minimalism, the CD — which the band recorded entirely in Mexico, despite many frustrating dealings with border patrol — features nine songs, including "Wearing the Blues," "Cuando Cuando Amor Amor" and "Swoop Me Up." The bonus video disc contains a 30-minute movie tracking the band, as well as a bonus video for "Stumble on Air," a song that appeared on last year's A Colores.

Hilary Duff is onto the paparazzi's moves, and she's got a surefire trick to throw them off. The singer/actress said in an interview featured in the December/January issue of Jane that she has a tactic to duck photographers trying to capture her in a tough moment with her boyfriend, Good Charlotte's Joel Madden: "If we're out someplace, we could totally be fighting, but we'll be looking at each other like this," Duff explained, reportedly flashing a big smile, "because there's a camera right there. Then we end up forgetting we're in a fight, because we're laughing since it's not a real thing to do, and we're both such real people." Real people who listen to music you may not expect, Duff insisted. "I love the Faint. If they would do a song for me, I would blow a fuse." ...
Reprise Records will re-release early Green Day material December 19. The band's 1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk! were originally issued on Lookout! Records, and then reissued by that same label in 2004, but Green Day removed the LPs from the Lookout catalog last year after allegations that the band was owed royalties. ... We're just months away from seeing exactly how "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" translates from book to the big screen (Feast your eyes on the film trailer right here), and now the young wizard's fifth adventure is about to go interactive. The "Order of the Phoenix" video game, scheduled for a July release, will allow players to explore Hogwarts and control multiple characters, including Harry, Sirius Black and Dumbledore. Capitol/Priority is commemorating the 20th anniversary of hip-hop pioneers N.W.A, with The Best of N.W.A: The Strength of Street Knowledge, due December 26. The singer will go to Japan for a December 19 Christmas celebration that is also commemorating the upcoming 25th anniversary of the release of Thriller. Jay-Z recently joined forces with another New York heavyweight — New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez — for a celebrity-poker tournament that benefited their respective charities, the A-Rod Family Foundation and Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has updated fans of the reunited rockers on the progress of their comeback album in a post on the Pumpkins' MySpace page. "We are moving along nicely in the studio," the drummer wrote. "[Frontman Billy Corgan] pulled off a magnificent guitar symphony last night and it is still ringing in my ears this morning. Eight guitars resonating in one big harmonic handshake. ... Today we will be working on vocals and solos. Tomorrow, who knows?" The Pumpkins' forthcoming LP, which is being produced by Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, the Cars), is slated for release next year. Lil Scrappy has broken his upcoming album down into two parts: "half sorry, half party."
The rapper plans to expand beyond his crunk safety net on Bred 2 Die Born 2 Live, due December 5 on BME/ Reprise Records. He might have party experts Lil Jon and 50 Cent as co-executive producers on the project (see "50 Cent Expected To Exec Produce Lil Scrappy Album" and "Lil Scrappy's Got Guests 'In The Bank' With Lil Jon, Young Buck On New Singles"), but Scrappy also gets serious when discussing his experience growing up with a pimp mother and preacher father.
"It's crazy, 'cause you know, my mom, she's a hustler, and then my daddy — I'm with them all the time, so I got to go back and forth with feelings and everything," Scrappy said. "So that's how my life is. It's like a n---a is crazy.
"Like I told people when I first came out," he continued, "my first album is going to be some real sh--, real talk. It's going to have some crunk music on there, but it's also going to have some real music on there. I'm a rapper, so at the end of the day, what they get out of Jon, they not going to get out of me. The only thing that makes [my music] crunk is my live show."
A number of producers helped Scrappy shape Bred 2 Die Born 2 Live, including Jon, J.R. Rotem and even Eminem. The Em track addresses Scrappy's upbringing in depth and is one of the album's more personal numbers. The Shady Records CEO wasn't around during the recording of the song, so Scrappy and 50 collaborated to make the heartfelt material.
"I'm saying all my problems. I'm writing a letter to God," Scrappy said. "I know he doesn't have it out to hurt me. I'm smaller than him, but I just want to know: Why in the hell am I caught up? I'm just confused. My heart is confused. And I address that."
Scrappy's more playful side is on display in his lead single, "Money in the Bank," featuring fellow G-Unit cohort Young Buck. And if it's up to Scrappy, his next single will be just as uptempo, possibly the Jazze Pha-helmed "Touching Everything." He had previously filmed a second video for the Lil Jon-produced "Gangsta, Gangsta." But with such heavy material on the album, Scrappy explained he didn't want to veer off too far from what got him started in the first place. He also said his lighter side is as much a part of him as anything else.
"That's the real me, I like to do everything. I'm not just a crunk artist," the rapper said. "I'm not a dope boy, I'm not a killer, all that. I'm a boss. I'm a real n---a. I put the whole thing out there. The first album [an EP] just really let me tell everyone who Scrappy was, this is Scrappy. Y'all had a taste of Scrappy. But with this album, you can be full. It's the whole thing. You had your taste test, now you going eat some dinner."

Lil Scrappy's Got Guests 'In The Bank' With Lil Jon, Young Buck On New Singles

Atlanta MC reveals details about 50 Cent-produced Bred 2 Die Born 2 Live LP.

It's no wonder Lil Scrappy is boasting all about his "Money in the Bank" on his new single: The newly anointed Prince of Crunk has inked a unique joint deal with G-Unit and Lil Jon's BME Recordings, and is benefiting from all the confidence that comes along with such a big-time signing.
"My album's about Scrappy — he back," the Atlanta MC said. "I'm just insinuating that I'm the best, baby, and I'm gonna rock the nation this time."
The video for "Money in the Bank" features lots of cash — being spent, passed around and flying through the air — shots of a tricked-out Lamborghini and an appearance by Young Buck, one of the many guests on Scrappy's first full-length LP, Bred 2 Die Born 2 Live, which is due this fall. Executive produced by Lil Jon and 50 Cent (see "50 Cent Expected to Exec Produce Lil Scrappy Album"), the album also features appearances by Lil Jon, Snoop, Olivia, Bohagon and Beanie Sigel, with production from Jazze Pha.
Scrappy recently shot a video for his next single, "Gangsta Gangsta," featuring Lil Jon. Like his "Training Day"-inspired video for "No Problem" (in which Lil Jon took on Denzel Washington's role, Scrappy portrayed Ethan Hawke's character and Snoop Dogg played a guy who gets his wheelchair overturned and his flask stolen), Scrappy said he shot the clip like it was an action movie. "But this time we're gonna do it on something that I wrote," he said. "We're flippin' over cars, we're jumpin' through windows, we're doin' everything."
Scrappy also revealed that there's a message behind "Gangsta Gangsta" that fits with the album: "You don't got to be hard to be a gangsta," he said. "You just got to be real."

50 Cent Expected To Exec Produce Lil Scrappy Album

Collaboration comes as part of deal between G-Unit and Lil Jon's BME clique.

According to Lil Jon's camp, the deal is just about done to bring 50 Cent onboard as one of the executive producers on Lil Scrappy's new LP, Bred to Die/ Born to Live, due in early 2006.
The collaboration is part of a bigger alliance between the G-Unit and Jon's BME clique — a partnership that has also seen Jon submitting beats for 50's artists over the past few months.
"Yeah, we been talking about collaborating a little bit because 50 and Scrappy are real cool," Jon said recently. "We been talking about how we can make Scrappy a bigger artist than he is. Sometimes when you get together with people and work things out, you can make a smaller situation massive. It's all like one big family. They showing us a lot of love."
"We're adding Scrappy's project from BME," 50 said last week while discussing his upcoming projects. "It will be a collaboration between me, Lil Jon and Scrappy. We will be working together shortly."
"It's definitely going down," Scrappy beamed. "We already spoke it up all the way. It happened. I just look at the bigger picture. We're gonna do everything all over again. You saw how 50 came out; we're gonna do it all over again. You saw how I came out; we're gonna do it all over again. I ain't coming down, I'm about to re-up all my energy all over again."
Scrap described his first official LP as "half party, half sorrow."
"You gonna have times when I go back to coming up as a child, through being a teenager till now," he elaborated. "All the problems and the good times all in one [album]. It's crunk, but it's all got real lyrics on there. No false statements on there."
He's been working with Mase, G-Unit, Stat Quo and Three 6 Mafia on the project, but Scrap said the LP is still in production and that some of those songs may not make the cut.
"You gotta go straight forward, get all your ideas right," he said of the process. "There's a lot of stuff that comes with putting out an album of you own. Jon can't help me through the whole thing, people like 50 can't help me through the whole thing. It's like putting together a movie, a book on wax damn near. It's gotta be right."

Green Day Hug G-Unit, Neptunes Hand Out Ice Cream -- Backstage At The VMAs

MIAMI — Beyond the music, fire and water, there was plenty of action at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards that the cameras couldn't catch ... the odd meet-ups and match-ups. We were backstage and behind the scenes to catch it all:
In the backstage talent-holding area, two huge screens played the show for guests, who also got to feast on a spread that included skewered chicken, lobster, shrimp and an open bar. Shaquille O'Neal hung out there for a while with fellow baller Dwyane Wade, but when Jessica Alba walked in he gave her a hug that lifted her off the ground. Shaq also made sure to tell Common how much he liked his music as the conscious rapper watched Ludacris and Bobby Valentino's performance on one of the screens. Luda and Bobby V., incidentally, had to run — literally — to hit the stage on time.
While Kanye West performed with Jamie Foxx onstage (see "Green Day Clean Up, Kelly Clarkson Gets Wet, 50 Rips Into Fat Joe At VMAs"), Jessica Simpson, the Black Eyed Peas' Fergie and Paulina Rubio grooved backstage. The trio gathered around a TV in a plush green room, laughing and shaking their hips to West's beat. A bit later, the three took turns admiring each other's dresses (see "Stars Rise To Diddy's Challenge With Hot Fashion On The VMA White Carpet"), with Fergie tugging at Simpson's plunging hemline.
Elsewhere, O.J. Simpson and his crew — one of whom was wearing a bright yellow jacket with a drawing of Michael Jackson's face on the back — walked down the hallway. O.J. said, "What are we doing backstage? I'm ready to go to the afterparties."
Nearby, Yellowcard's Ryan Key moseyed up to the bar and shook hands with Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington. The three chatted for a minute, then pulled out their BlackBerries and exchanged numbers.
Quincy Jones made the rounds, chatting up Ashlee Simpson and her band, shaking hands with Nelly and huddling in a corner with Black Eyed Pea Will.I.Am. A few minutes later, Will could be seen laughing with Common and Jeremy Piven. Apparently taking a liking to Piven's suit, Will pulled back the actor's lapel to inspect the label. Minutes after winning the Moonman for Best New Artist, the Killers posed with their hardware and accepted congratulations from David Banner. As they were hustled to the press room, frontman Brandon Flowers turned to guitarist Dave Keuning and sighed, "I always forget someone in those speeches. Did I remember to thank [director] Sophie [Muller]?" "I don't know," Keuning said. "Did you remember to thank Eric Roberts?"
Early on, Green Day looked like punk presidents as they arrived, waving and blowing kisses atop a banged-up convertible. After displaying their sufficiently un-pimped ride with Sway, they did laps around the pre-show stage, shaking hands with fans and leaping on the hood of their car. After clearing the stage, they ran into members of 50 Cent's G-Unit posse, giving them hearty hugs and handshakes.
As Rihanna and her dancers warmed up beside the stage before performing "Pon De Replay" on the pre-show, Sway stopped by to give them some pointers and encouragement, reminding them to smile, because they were about to play the biggest stage they'd ever been on.
Racecar driver Jeff Gordon seemed a bit perplexed, arriving between a glittering Paul Wall (who displayed his glistening grill and massive pimp-cup necklace to cheering fans) and the bellowing Ying Yang Twins. As they posed for photographers, D-Roc asked the crowd, "How y'all like this heat?" and then — without knowing — dropped his "artist access" pass on the white carpet, sending fans into a wild scramble. The pass was eventually returned to Roc by a beefy security guard.
Never one to play by the rules, Bishop Don "Magic" Juan's SUV passed its mark on the white carpet by several hundred feet. As an MTV worker started giving the SUV's driver an earful, Juan advised the employee, "It's all chuuuch, baby!"
Akon had some auto-related problems as well. He wheeled his cherry-red Ferrari onto the pre-show stage's ramp, ready to drive it onto the rotating display (see "Snoop, Game, Luda And Shaq Show Off Their Donks And Drop-Tops"), but the plan seemed a complete surprise to event security. They stopped his car and removed it from the ramp, which left Akon standing rideless and clueless for a good five minutes before he was whisked away onto the white carpet.
Lil Jon and Carmen Electra hugged and exchanged pleasantries atop the arrivals area, the king of crunk eyeing her up and down, giving her a twirl and saying, "Damn, that dress looks delicious." Jon then stepped aside and hugged a Cohiba-smoking Kanye West, laughing and asking for a drag from the pricey stogie.
Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden created a logjam atop the arrivals area, giving daps to Houston rappers Slim Thug and Mike Jones, taking time to admire Jones' sparkling fronts. Their attention quickly shifted to the Neptunes' Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, who arrived on the white carpet with a pair of scantily clad girls handing out ice cream treats to cheering fans.
Ice-T kidded the suddenly blowing-up Jones, making a phone gesture with his hand and yelling, "Ay, Mike, I tried to reach you, but you ain't picking up the phone. I wanna do something with you, man." T then turned his attention to Williams, shaking his hand while Pharrell bowed in reverence.
Gwen Stefani and Lil' Kim embraced on the carpet, showering each other with kisses and compliments. "You look fabulous!" Gwen gushed. "Darling, you do too!" Kim countered.
Lindsay Lohan arrived on the white carpet in a massive SUV, and after she exited, a seemingly endless stream of her friends, stylists, bodyguards and publicists followed behind her. As she made her way past the photographers and up the carpet, she shook hands with Jay-Z — interrupting a powwow between him and Snoop Dogg. But no one seemed to notice, as all three smiled and laughed while waving to cheering fans.
Hulk Hogan's family made the scene, taking pictures with Game. Later, Hogan asked Juelz Santana to take pictures with his daughter Brooke on the white carpet — he obliged. Akon and Kim Porter hugged while the Ying Yang Twins yelled and flashed the gold in their mouths. Young City (a.k.a. Da Band's Chopper) ran across the white carpet to hug Kim as well.
On Saturday, well before the awards kicked off, dozens of heavyweights made their way to the American Airlines Arena to greet the press, pimp projects and schmooze.
The annual VMA Radio Forum is designed for artists to kill a bunch of birds (i.e. radio station interviews) with one stone, but it's also a major networking event and there was plenty of that this year.
When Lil Scrappy crossed paths with labelmates Green Day, the rapper went right in for the gold. "We need to hook it up," he told Billie Joe Armstrong. "You guys should give me a beat."
"Leave your number with my publicist," the frontman replied.
"We met Mr. Scrappy, we saw the boys in Good Charlotte — we've seen a lot of gold teeth," Billie Joe said later. "And some pimp cups and the Ying and the Yang," bassist Mike Dirnt added.
Good Charlotte, on hand to support Green Day and other friends (My Chemical Romance and the Game, according to singer Joel Madden), also rubbed elbows with the Ying Yang Twins and Alicia Keys. "She was very nice," Benji Madden said. "Usually people come up and say they like our band, so it's a great place to make new friends. It's like going to summer camp."
Keys went straight to the arena after arriving in Miami, so she was anxious to get out and see the city. "I do plan to go into the water," the singer said. "I love to swim, I think I might want to do some water skiing or some wave-running or some fishing, something that involves a boat and water."
The Bravery are new to Miami but were having no problem navigating the city thanks to a certain video game. "It's just like 'Vice City,' " singer Sam Endicott said. "We didn't realize how accurate it is to the video game. We were driving down the street and our drummer started freaking out, 'You don't know how many times I've crashed a Porsche into that building!' "
As he navigated from interviewer to interviewer, Usher literally bumped into My Chemical Romance, whom the R&B star was eager to meet — even if he had a strange way of showing it. "Hi Steve, I'm Usher," he said to the band's singer. "Hi, I'm Gerard," the frontman replied with a smile.
It's OK, Usher; it's hard to keep track of everyone's names. Just ask Brooke Hogan, who made the rounds with her family. "We went to a big party last night and we got to meet ... oh, I can't remember her name," she said. "Mom?"
"You can't remember Mariah Carey? Hello!" Linda Hogan responded. "That was the highlight of the whole weekend. She's like a princess."
My Chemical Romance spent the majority of the radio forum stifling yawns, but not because they were bored: They had just flown overnight from England, where they played both the Reading and Leeds music festivals. NEW YORK — Lil Jon isn't stingy with his beats, he just plays favorites — namely with the artists on his BME label. Luckily for the rest of the industry, he has an overflow of product to push.
"When it was time to go in the studio and work on [Trillville's Reloaded] album, I went in for a weekend and did 50 beats in a week," Jon said late Monday, just a few hours before taking the stage for Anger Management 3. "I think I gave myself like a month and I had 150 beats so [the artists on my label] could pick the hottest [ones]. I have a catalog now of about 600 beats."
Within the next few months, Jon plans to release albums by Trillville, Lil' Scrappy, E-40 and debuting MC Bohagan.
"I went down to Miami," said Bohagan, seated next to Jon. "[Jon] played 300 beats for me in a row. I had to go outside and scratch my head and play basketball because it was too many jamming beats. You be like, 'I want number one, I want number 300. I want all of them.' It's hard when you hear that many jamming beats. It don't take him about 10, five minutes to give you a jam."
"Me and my team got it down to science," Jon said. "I just go in and do it. My job is to make beats and make something hot. When I go in, I catch a vibe. If the beat feels like it don't make you move right, I scrap that and go to another track. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes, sometimes it takes an hour to get one done. I just keep spitting them out. I got all these artists, and we gotta get these albums out. If I don't do beats, we don't put no damn albums out. That's my motivation right there."
So how are the beats disseminated among his squad? According to Jon, most of the time the artists don't pick the same beats, but when they do, it's all about who has the most heat. "Sometimes we might lay songs to the same beat," Bohagan revealed. "Jon might listen to what song is jammin' the hardest and that artist will get the beat ... but the song better be jammin'."
Outside artists hoping to secure beats for their albums shouldn't put their checkbooks away yet. While Jon said his roster usually gets first dibs on his beats, he's not turning his nose up at everyone outside his clique. He says he's especially excited about working with two of his favorite MCs: Ice Cube and Too Short. Jon produced seven songs apiece for both of their projects.
The King of Crunk is also stepping into the pop world; he said he has a beat in the cooker for Jessica Simpson, he's knocked out a song for Hilary Duff and he'll work with Paris Hilton some day if they ever get their schedules together.
"I was doing a remix for [Simpson's 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'], and when I did the beat, I was like, 'This beat is too hot for a remix,' " he said. "I sent the beat to her and they liked it for her album. Hilary Duff, we did a song for a soundtrack. She has the 'Material Girl' movie coming out and we redid [Madonna's] 'Material Girl.' "
