Back in the '80s, Jordan Knight was plucked out of obscurity to join one of the most popular groups at the time, the New Kids on the Block, so he understands what it's like to have someone give you your big break. Now, Knight — who is busy traveling the country to record his next solo album — is hoping to give someone their chance at pop stardom.

"This idea of 'Jordan Idol' came up while I was in the recording studio in Boston, and a lot of fans showed up outside the recording studio, and I just went out there with a [video camera]," he told MTV News. "I said, 'Who here could sing? Maybe you could sing background on my record?' And a couple girls sang, and I posted it up on YouTube."

Since then, an overwhelming amount of fans have wanted that same chance. So Knight, who has already held a "Jordan Idol" in Nashville, is now in New York looking for that special someone.

"New York is one of the entertainment capitals of the world, so I'm sure there's a lot of singers here," he said about his next "JI," being held at Le Poisson Rouge club Saturday. "New York comes with a certain attitude — an attitude you can't get anywhere else in the country — so, hopefully, I'll meet some people who have that New York vibe to them."

Knight said he's holding these auditions because he's always wanted to help up-and-coming musical talent. "I want to have fun with the fans," he said. "I want to hear them sing, and who knows? Maybe there is someone out there who can really put it down, and if I have the connections to help them out, it's kind of always been a dream of mine to help somebody out."

What will it take to catch Knight's eye? "You don't really look for a certain something. Well, actually, you do look a certain something," he laughed. "They have to have it. They don't have to have the perfect look, the perfect voice, the perfect moves — they just have to have something special. It's hard to come by. I'm looking for it. It, are you out there?"

Former New Kid Jordan Knight's second album is a little Lawrence Welk, a little Boyz II Men and a whole lot of fun, uptempo pop.

"There's elements of everything from polka to doo-wop," producer Jimmy Jam said last week. "It's crazy — a very eclectic record."
The falsetto-voiced pop star is working on the disc in the Minneapolis studio of Jimmy Jam and partner Terry Lewis, who were also among the producers on Knight's 1999 self-titled solo debut. The pair are producing six of the album's tracks and will probably mix the entire LP.

"Around the World" will likely be the disc's first single, and it also stands a good chance of being the album's title, Jimmy Jam said. The song takes an even bolder approach than "Give It to You," Knight's debut solo single, which mixed accordions, hefty grooves and waltz breaks.

"The only way that we've been able to figure out how to describe the song is it's sort of Dean Martin meets Sisqó. You know how 'Give It to You' was quirky? This is the next level of quirky."
Knight has said the new material is on the whole more uptempo than his debut because he believes fans are craving fun, danceable music.

The singer also plans to do some recording in Los Angeles, but there was no word at press time who will produce the album's remaining tracks. The disc is expected in stores this spring.

Former New Kids On The Block singer Donnie Wahlberg has earned a role in the new $120 million World War II miniseries, "Band Of Brothers," tentatively scheduled to air on HBO later this year.
Wahlberg, who had a small role in last year's box office blockbuster, "The Sixth Sense," will join a cast that already includes Patrick Dempsey, Ron Livingston, Kirk Acevedo, and Richard Speight, according to "The Hollywood Reporter."
The "Band Of Brothers" miniseries will run an estimated 13 hours and is based upon historian Stephen Ambrose's 1993 book of the same name. The nonfiction novel follows a company of soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division from basic training to landing in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, through the surrender of Germany in the spring of 1945.
"Band Of Brothers," perhaps HBO's most ambitious project since 1998's "From The Earth To The Moon," will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg, who dealt with similar WWII material while directing
"Saving Private Ryan," and Tom Hanks, who also oversaw "From The Earth To The Moon."
As for Wahlberg, he's just finished work on a new film, "The Altoona Riding Club," in which he stars opposite Robert Forster. That film is also due out later this year.

Jordan Knight gave it to his fans, all right.
On Tuesday afternoon, the once and current heartthrob took to a stage set up along the north side of Union Square Park in Manhattan, where he put on a free concert for his fans.
Unfortunately, inclement weather cut the former New Kid's performance short, but not until after the gyrating, black-clad Knight and his troupe of dancers performed the hit "Give It To You" along with other tracks from the singer's self-titled solo LP.
The show's location was kept secret until Tuesday morning, and portions of the gig were broadcast on MTV's "Total Request Live."
If you missed out on the fun, tune in to the female-centric gabfest "The View" on Wednesday; Knight is scheduled to appear on the show, according to his official Web site.

Boy-band fans, make an appointment with your TV or VCR for Tuesday afternoon; former New Kid on the Block-turned-solo artist Jordan Knight will perform a free outdoor concert that day, which will be broadcast on MTV's "Total Request Live."
The exact location of the performance will not be revealed until Tuesday morning, but it will take place in the environs of New York City, so fans in the area may be lucky enough to catch Knight in the flesh for free. And if you can't make it to NYC on Tuesday, fear not: the singer is also planning his own U.S. club tour for November to promote his self-titled debut.
Knight, who is nominated for Best Dance Video at the MTV Video Music Awards, plans to attend the ceremony, which will be broadcast live from New York's Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center on September 9 at 8 p.m. (ET) (see "Nine Inch Nails, Lauryn Hill, DMX, Kid Rock, Jay-Z Lined Up For VMAs").
Jordan
and his former New Kid bandmates are enjoying a bit of a renaissance lately, with the current slew of boy bands finding inspiration in the formula NKOTB perfected in the '80s. The trio known as LFO has gone so far as to name-drop the band in its current hit, "Summer Girls," pointing out that "New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits" (before providing the helpful information that "Chinese food makes me sick").
As for the other ex-New Kids, Joey McIntyre released his solo debut, "Stay The Same" earlier this year, and Donnie Wahlberg makes a brief, but memorable, appearance in the current box office smash, "The Sixth Sense."

The self-titled debut album by Jordan Knight hit store shelves on Tuesday, no doubt satisfying fans who have helped his single "Give It to You" find a comfortable home in the "Billboard" Top Ten.
The 10-song "Jordan Knight" contains a handful of tracks produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and features an ambitious cover of Prince's "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man."
Although the singer remains best known for his work with the now-defunct boy band New Kids on the Block, he says he'd like fans to keep a musical open mind (or ear, rather) when they listen to his new work.
"I really never went into the project saying... 'I'm going to label myself this kind of artist' or 'I do this kind of music,' 'cause I just like all sorts of music," Knight explained to MTV News. "So that's what you hear, is just all sorts of music. I mean, I listen to contemporary R&B. I like classic rock. I like just so many different styles of music, and that's mainly what I wanted to bring into
my album, and I think I was pretty successful."
Following a brief stint on the summer radio concert circuit, Knight will kick off a U.S. tour with 'N Sync and Five at the GTE Amphitheater in Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 7 (see "'N Sync, Five And Jordan Knight On Board For Boys Of Summer Tour").

Jordan Knight may be a hot commodity these days with his debut single, "Give It to You," climbing the charts. But to millions, the singer will always be one-fifth of New Kids on the Block.
Today, the other former New Kids are off pursuing individual careers as well. Joey McIntyre recently saw the release of his first solo effort, "Stay the Same." Donnie Wahlberg has appeared in several films, including "Ransom" and the upcoming Bruce Willis vehicle "The Sixth Sense." Miami resident Danny Wood works in the music industry, while Knight's big brother Jon works in real estate in Boston. Would Knight ever consider reuniting with his former bandmates?
"I think it would be cool," Knight recently told MTV News.
The singer is planning to make an appearance at the Virgin Megastore in New York's Times Square on May 11, the day his self-titled debut hits the street. The ten-track album contains a handful of songs produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and features a cover of Prince's "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man."
Knight will embark on a tour of radio station-sponsored events beginning May 20 in Memphis. His trek with 'N Sync and Five will kick off on July 7 at the GTE Amphitheatre in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
