NEW YORK — The spirit and energy of the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards — the madcap awards show that celebrates independent music and college radio across the country — was distilled entirely in the show's opening performance.

Once the lights dimmed at Roseland Ballroom, house DJ Diplo cranked out booty-shaking jams while the giant video screens showed Brooklyn new-wave duo Matt and Kim riding through the city on bicycles. Once they arrived, they stormed the stage and kicked into "Lessons Learned." Flanked by eight backup singers who gradually stripped down to their underwear (in a nod to the Video Music Award-winning video for the same song), the duo jubilantly pounded out the song. Unlike this year's VMAs, stage crashers were welcomed during Matt and Kim's three minutes of joy, and Kim herself mounted the crowd at the end.

From there, Pete Wentz — dressed casually and holding a red plastic cup (a common accessory throughout the evening) — sauntered onstage and officially kicked off the show, which airs December 4 at 10 p.m. on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. What followed was a cavalcade of fun-loving guest appearances, energy-packed performances and plenty of enthusiastic crowd interaction.

Zooey Deschanel appeared next, running off a long and complicated story about cloning herself to find out about more bands and presenting the Breaking Woodie award to Never Shout Never. 3OH!3 turned plenty of heads when they appeared dressed in the same red-lace costume Lady Gaga wore to the VMAs, then handed the Left Field Woodie to a grateful Tech N9ne. Other winners included Hotel of the Laughing Tree (the Long Island quintet who picked up the Best Music on Campus Woodie and seemed overwhelmed by the whole fiasco), Green Day (who were absent, forcing Asher Roth to accept in their honor — which he did by leaping into the crowd while wearing a throwback basketball jersey) and Matt and Kim (who won the Best Video Woodie for "Lessons Learned").

On the performance front, nobody could quite match the manic grandeur of Matt and Kim, but Passion Pit (who whipped the crowd into a frenzy with a ridiculous rendition of "The Reeling") and the Clipse, (who brought out Cam'ron and Rick Ross for a chaotic but thrilling run through a handful of lightning-tongue verses) came pretty close. With all the flailing limbs and semi-nude people, it was easy to miss the easy poise of Death Cab for Cutie, who rolled through their "New Moon" soundtrack song, "Meet Me on the Equinox," with an arena-rock grace, clearly cementing themselves as not only the night's elder statesmen, but also the band ready for much bigger rooms than Roseland.

By the end of the evening, the crowd was soaked with sweat but still swaying and dancing and drinking. Like the best college party, it hardly mattered who won in the end (that would be Kings of Leon, who scored the night's top honor of Woodie of the Year).

Don't miss the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards, airing on December 4 at 10 p.m. on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU!

Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill married girlfriend singer/songwriter Jessie Baylin over the weekend. UsMagazine.com reported that Followill, 30, and Baylin, 25, married on Saturday evening at Wolf Den Farm in Brentwood, Tennessee, in a small ceremony that included close friends and family, as well as actress Scarlett Johansson, a high school friend of Baylin's.

"The wedding was beautiful. It was a gorgeous, 70-degree day," an unnamed band rep told Us of the ceremony, which took place in a rustic barn. Baylin, who was born in New Jersey but lives in Nashville, has released two albums of rootsy music, including last year's Firesight. The couple first met at the Bonnaroo festival in 2006.

Followill, 30, tweeted about his wedding on Sunday morning, according to People.com. "I woke up with a married woman in my bed this morning," he wrote. "Luckily she was mine."

The wedding caps a stellar year for the Kings, who have long been popular overseas, but had struggled to build a large U.S. audience until recently. In addition to a smash headlining tour of amphitheaters, the Kings snagged a Grammy award for their breakthrough hit single, "Sex on Fire," from their most successful album to date, Only By the Night, which has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.

After years of being notorious hell-raisers on the road, Nathan is the first of the Followills — the band is led by middle brother, guitarist/singer Caleb, and features youngest brother Jared on bass and cousin Matthew on lead guitar — to wed. The Kings recently released a live DVD and have talked about releasing a remix album featuring the deft touches of Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park and Pharrell.

Kid Cudi went from mixtape phenom to the upper echelons of the Billboard albums chart in little over a year, so it's no surprise he wants to keep the ball rolling. What is a surprise is who he wants to keep it rolling with.

We already know he's hard at work on projects with rapper Chip Tha Ripper and Brooklyn electro duo Ratatat, but backstage at this past weekend's Ulalume Music Festival in Columbia, Maryland, he revealed details of another album, a compilation disc he's dubbed Cudder. And he's aiming extra high on this one.

"Cudder is basically an album of me working with artists that have inspired me or artists that have helped me grow and people who I've always admired," Cudi said. "So far, we've got Snoop, Travis Barker — trying to get Green Day onboard, hopefully, Kings of Leon, hopefully. I'm really trying to do all the collabs that I couldn't do for the [Man on the Moon] album, and then some, because the album was so themed that I had to strip a lot of features. We're going to have the Clipse on this compilation, Robin Thicke, hopefully we're going to get in the studio, I just did a record for his upcoming album; it's amazing."

Cudi said he's aiming to have Cudder out by "summertime at the latest," and while the idea of him working with, say, Billie Joe Armstrong might seem a bit odd, he points to Moon tracks like "Pursuit of Happiness" (his collaboration with Ratatat and MGMT) as proof that he can pull it off and as a possible preview of how the song might turn out.

"On the Ratatat song, you can hear Ratatat and you can hear me; we don't compromise each other. That's the same thing I want to do with anybody I work with. ... I don't want it to be, like, a Green Day song with me rapping over it," he said. "What I want to do is, have the triangle effect. Have Green Day involved and have them co-produce with someone like a Ratatat or my producers, do like a joint thing, and then we all create from the ground up. That way, it's like a fusion of each sound and each inspiration."

Hotly tipped Canadian MCs? Check. Hard-charging Southern-rock royalty? Yep. Animal Collective? You bet. The nominations for the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards are in, and, well, let's just say it's a pretty diverse field.

Chosen by college students and music fans across the country, the noms for the sixth-annual Woodies span the spectrum, with big-name acts like Drake and the Kings of Leon going head-to-head with lesser-known bands like La Roux, Grizzly Bear and, yes, even Animal Collective for the coveted big hunk of wood.

Drake and KOL face off against Asher Roth, MGMT and the Silversun Pickups for the night's biggest award — Woodie of the Year — given to the artist who made the biggest splash on mtvU and the college music scene over the past year. Grizzly Bear and La Roux are both up for the Breaking Woodie (given to the year's best emerging artist), along with Wale, Friendly Fires, Passion Pit and Never Shout Never. Animal Collective will battle Green Day, Phoenix, 3OH!3 and POS in the Performing Woodie category, given to the year's best live act.

Needless to say, this ain't the Grammys.

The 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards will be held November 18 at New York's Roseland Ballroom, with performances and appearances to be announced shortly (in previous years, Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, All Time Low and Santigold — to name just a few — have taken the stage). The show will then premiere Friday, December 4, at 10 p.m. ET on mtvU, MTV, MTV2 and Palladia.

Voting in all categories begins Monday (October 5) at Woodies.MTV.com and runs through November 16.

The nominees for the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards are:

Jay-Z has passed the King. Jay did it by selling more than 476,000 copies of the disc according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

Though most Beatles albums are not eligible for the top 200 chart, which includes only releases from the past 18 months, a newly configured stereo box set lands at #15 on sales of 26,000 and the mono box set, Beatles in Mono, comes in at #40 on sales of 12,000. In total, Billboard reported that the Beatles catalog sold more than 626,000 copies, including the new reissues and older versions, a week after the catalog had moved a more modest 21,000 copies.

Next week, look out for the EP from Drake, as well as chart debuts from Muse and Kid Cudi.

There are really only two ways things can go when you name your second album Breakthrough: Either you top the charts and walk around with a big grin feeling validated for your confidence, or the CD tanks, and you're left feeling, well, broken.

Luckily for sunshiny pop singer Colbie Caillat, the former will be the case next week when her second album hits #1 in its chart debut, thanks to sales of nearly 106,000 and a push from the hit single "Fallin' for You."

According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Caillat will lead the parade of new titles in the top 10, which also includes Christian rockers Skillet, whose Awake will land just behind at #2 (68,000) and Miley Cyrus' Wal-Mart exclusive Time of Our Lives EP, which debuts at #3 (62,000). While the impressively robust Kings of Leon firmly hold down the #4 spot as their nearly year-old Only by the Night saw a 15 percent increase in sales from the previous week (52,000), experimental British songstress Imogen Heap debuts strongly at #5 with her everything and the kitchen sink album, Ellipse (48,000).

Last week's #1, country queen Reba McEntire, drops down to #6, as sales for Keep on Loving You fell by 56 percent (42,000). She's followed by George Strait's Twang #7 (41,000), the Black Eyed Peas' The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#8, 36,000), Taylor Swift's Fearless (#9, 34,000) and the week's only other top 10 debut, Now That's What I Call Country, Vol. 2 (#10, 33,000).

Just outside the top tier, at #12, is former founding Destiny's Child member LeToya's second solo album, Lady Love (33,000), leading the darker third effort from British buzz band Arctic Monkeys, Humbug (#15, 28,000) and the latest from Internet sensation Ingrid Michaelson, Everybody (#18, 23,000).

After several years out of the spotlight, Hasidic rapper Matisyahu makes a soft landing at #19 with his second major-label album, Light (22,000), which bests the rap return of actress/MC Queen Latifah, Persona (#25, 18,000), her first hip-hop album since 2003. And, just a few years after the use of their hit "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" in an iPod ad made them the next big thing, Australian hard-rock revivalists Jet land in the #27 slot with their third album, Shaka Rock (17,000).

Look for more diva action at the top next week as Whitney Houston is expected to easily snag the #1 spot with her latest attempted comeback, I Look to You, her first album in seven years. There will also be bows from Trey Songz, Pitbull, the Used, Chevelle and the always surprising Insane Clown Posse.

If there's one thing the five bands competing for Best Rock Video at the Video Music Awards have in common, it's that none of them seem to think they have a prayer of actually winning the thing.

Last week, when we spoke to Fall Out Boy — whose "I Don't Care" video is up against Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," Green Day's "21 Guns," Paramore's "Decode" and the Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" in the category — they had already written themselves off as the front-runners, saying the Kings would probably take home the Moonman.

We then took this information to the Kings themselves backstage at Lollapalooza in Chicago, who quickly laughed it off. Seems they don't think they have a shot, either.

"Coldplay? Green Day? So basically what you're telling us is that we'll come in last place," bassist Jared Followill laughed. "I swear to God, I think we might come in last place. Or maybe second to last."

Perhaps Best Rock Video will just end in a five-way tie then. The Kings were actually quite proud of their first-ever VMA nom, which only serves as (yet another) cherry atop a pretty sweet year for the band — including a million-selling album, the cover of Rolling Stone and a headlining slot at Lolla. And even though they won't admit it, they've got just as good a shot at the Moonman as the others.

"I think it's huge for us, because we're always so self-conscious about our videos. They're the hardest thing in the world to make, especially nowadays. They've been around forever, and everything's been done," Followill said. "So it's really, really hard to keep your videos cool. We feel like every video we've ever done is really stupid. So the fact that we're up for an award for a video is kind of cool."

"We did it with Sophie Muller, and she has a lot of great videos, and we just kind of trusted her by looking at her other videos," brother (and KOL guitarist) Matthew Followill added. "This is one of our favorite videos. I hope we do win. It would be nice. It would be cool."

So what was it about "Use Somebody" that made it the Kings' favorite clip to date? Well, it certainly wasn't Muller's original concept.

"The concept was kind of hard to swallow almost. She referenced, like, Bon Jovi's 'Dead or Alive' video or something like that, but she was like, 'Just trust me, it's gonna be cool,' " Jared said. "It's got a lot of stock footage. We like stock footage. So it's probably the least stupid video we've done, which is saying something."

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Additional celebrity presenters and performers will be announced in the coming weeks.

It was a good week for country music, though not necessarily for music sales as a whole, as duo Sugarland notch a #1 debut on next week's Billboard 200 chart for their first live album, Live on the Inside, a Wal-Mart exclusive that moved a modest 76,000 in its first week. The other top debut next week will be from Taylor Swift opening act Gloriana, whose self-titled debut will hit #3 on sales of 44,000, according to the latest numbers provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

The only other debut in a very slow week on the charts is the #10 showing by Kidz Bop Kids' Kidz Bop 16, which sold 34,000 copies. And while most of the other usual suspects in the top 10 suffered double-digit sales drop-offs, the resurgent Kings of Leon once again move up the charts, this time climbing one spot to #5 with their nearly year-old, million-plus-selling Only by the Night, which moved just over 44,000 copies, one of five albums in that range separated by less than 200 units.

The rest of the top 10: Now 31 (#2, 45,000), Black Eyed Peas' The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#4, 44,000), Daughtry's Leave This Town (#6, 44,000), Maxwell's BLACKsummers'night (#7, 43,000), Taylor Swift's Fearless (#8, 37,000) and last week's #1, Fabolous'' Loso's Way (#9, 37,000).

Just outside the top 10, Detroit R&B singer K'Jon lands at #12 with his major label debut, I Get Around (34,000), and Modest Mouse hit #15 with their EP No One's First, And You're Next (27,000). An EP of performances from season eight of "American Idol" slides in at #17 (24,000), and the soundtrack to Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place" — featuring songs by Selena Gomez, Honor Society, Aly & AJ and others — appears in the #24 position (18,000).

A couple of young divas had rough weeks. Ashley Tisdale's Guilty Pleasure sinks 44 spots in its second week after shedding 66 percent of its business to land at #56 (9,000), and Kristinia DeBarge's Exposed lost 58 percent of its sales in week two, falling 46 spots to #69 (7,000).

Things aren't likely to perk up too much next week, as the only major releases likely to shake up the top 10 are the latest from country legend George Strait, the Leighton Meester-assisted Hot Mess from Cobra Starship and the debut from country cutie Jessie James.

CHICAGO -- Somewhere in Chicago on Friday night, hopefully dry and warm, you can bet that Perry Farrell was grinning ear-to-ear. Despite a persistent all-day rain that turned the massive Lollapalooza fairground along the Chicago waterfront into a slippery mudbog worthy of Woodstock, the musical mash-up spirit that the festival's co-founder has been chasing for nearly 20 years made a strong showing.

As the rain finally let up in time for the headliners to take the stage, on the north end, the battling band of brothers (and cousin) Kings Of Leon were making the most of their third go-round at the fest, pumping out their muscular Southern boogie to an adoring sea of fans. Meanwhile, at the other end, British synth pop veterans Depeche Mode moved muddy feet with a classic set of keyboard anthems, including "Enjoy the Silence" and thunderous set-closer "Personal Jesus."

But it was what was happening in between the two stages that surely made Farrell smile. The Jane's Addiction frontman, who has long harbored a fascination with techo/rave dance culture, expanded his dance area this year and created a party space that drew huge crowds all day. Despite two world-famous headliners performing just yards away in either direction, the large leafy area was packed with thousands of bodies gyrating and throwing their hands in the air ecstatically to thumping techno, just as they had earlier in the day to jeep beat hip-hop and old school dance tunes.

However, that's not what the whole day was like. With one of the weaker first-day line-ups in the reborn festival's recent history, the day began slowly in a steady drizzle with California's the Henry Clay People warming up a sparse crowd with shambling indie-rock tunes about the apocalypse and a story about an urn of a late friend's ashes they are touring with. Matching the grey drizzle perfectly on an adjacent stage was were pastoral, beardy plaints of the Other Lives.

Atlanta's Manchester Orchestra brought none of those daffodil vibes, though, crunching bones with driving rockers like "In My Teeth," "Shake It Out" and their breakthrough hit, "I've Got Friends." They ended with the surging/swooning epic "Everything To Nothing" just as the rain really began to fall.

Once the skies opened up around midday -- and all those brightly colored mohawks began to sag and the lunchtime beers became a terrible idea -- the soggy masses had New Brunswick, New Jersey's Gaslight Anthem to keep their spirits up. Channeling an inked-up Springsteen, singer Brian Fallon wove his stirring tales of busted hearts and small town girls with their sailor tattoos with a charming grit, strumming hard through get-outta-this-town anthems like "Great Expectations," "The '59 Sound" and "Old White Lincoln."

The Knux, one of the few hip-hop acts on this year's bill, made sure their presence was known, hitting the stage to the strains of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and swaggering like a rebel rock band, complete with distorted guitars over sampled beats. Clad in matching black Knux T-shirts, they looked like a rap Ramones tribute. MC Krispy Kreme did his best to get the crowd hyped with shout-along choruses on "Remind Me In 3 Days" and the rousing "Cappuccino."

Cleveland's Kid Cudi fit surprisingly nicely on the Perry Stage after synthetically produced acts like Simian Mobile Disco and Crookers led the way, because he himself seems to live in a world that is half real and half synthesized. Like mentor Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak, Cudi has found a sweet spot between hip-hop and electronically enhanced singing, even if it was sometimes hard to tell if he was actually singing live along to the tracks.

If that wasn't your scene, the men of Bon Iver were sure to mellow you down easy with the droney strains of "Lump Sum" and "Blood Bank" and perhaps the strangest mass festival sing along ever, the plaintive "Skinny Love," with its refrain of "Now I'm breaking at the britches/ And at the end of all your lines."

The schizophrenia continued back across the way, as the funky hippie techo of STS9 mutated into the spastic gothy beats of Crystal Castles and then the psychedelic mindstorm that is Of Montreal. What other band's lead singer is carried on stage by a pair of Skeletor-looking monsters for a set of short-attention-span pixie-pop that included masked ninjas battling a gigantic female sumo wrestler, transvestites in one-legged leotards releasing balloons and pajama-wearing goons in gasmasks delivering Christmas presents filled with smokebombs?

In addition to playing such fan favorites as "Nonpareil of Favor," "For Our Elegant Caste" and a beat-assisted version of "Wraith Pinned To the Mist," the kaleidoscopic set also featured a surprise appearance by urban boho songstress and friend Janelle Monae for a cover of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream."

The day's biggest crowd, however, belonged to Kings of Leon, who played the festival in 2007 and reminded the adoring crowd that their 2003 Lolla set was a disaster. After opening with the fiery three-punch combo of "Be Somebody," "Taper Jean Girl" and "My Party," singer Caleb Followil recalled how the then-new group played to just a handful of people back then, joking that when the meager crowds got a load of their mustaches and outfits, they quickly dispersed. That wasn't the case this time, though, as the now world-beating rock group funked up "Molly's Chambers" and "Crawl" with a grimy, Stonesy flair and created a chorus of tens of thousands on their breakthrough hit, "Sex on Fire."

It was hard to believe that jittery band Caleb spoke of was the same one whose soaring, radio-ready anthems were bouncing around the skyscraper canyons of downtown Chicago on Friday night, as if they belonged on the main stage all along.

Will 'New Moon' Soundtrack Include Thom Yorke And Kings Of Leon?

Director Chris Weitz reveals soundtrack possibilities in a recent interview.
By James Montgomery

"New Moon" director Chris Weitz recently gave an interview to movie site RottenTomatoes.com in which he talked about the status of the film — it's due in theaters November 20 — and spoke at length about the music he's lining up for the soundtrack.

Now, normally, soundtrack stories aren't that interesting ... but two things were different here. First, the "New Moon" album follows the mega-successful "Twilight" soundtrack (which featured a pair of new songs from Paramore and has sold more than 2.1 million copies to date) and second, Weitz mentioned that none other than Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and the Kings of Leon were interested in contributing songs.

For real.

"I am surprised at some of the bands that have said they're interested. It's kind of great," Weitz told the site. "The criterion will still always be what's right for the movie at that given moment, but Thom Yorke is interested; we might, if we're very lucky, get Kings of Leon to do something ... it's exciting to be able to have access to this kind of talent."

Speculation about just who would appear on the "New Moon" soundtrack has run rampant for months, with names like Kelly Clarkson and Coldplay being tossed about, but Yorke and the Kings of Leon?! They just seemed, well, different ... and yes, we know that Radiohead's "15 Step" featured prominently in the "Twilight" film (though was noticeably absent from the soundtrack album), but still ...

So we decided to find out for ourselves if Weitz was being serious. First, we reached out to Atlantic Records, who — along with music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas's Chop Shop Records — released the "Twilight" soundtrack, and will be doing the same for "New Moon." A spokesperson for the label told MTV News that he could not confirm the story, since the track list for the "New Moon" soundtrack was still being worked out.

We then reached out to reps for Yorke and the Kings of Leon, hoping they could shed some light on the "New Moon" situation. Turns out, they couldn't really.

Yorke's spokesperson told MTV News "not denying [the story], but there's nothing confirmed as yet." When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the Kings of Leon told us "They like the film a lot, but it's a little too early to tell if they can be involved."

So, while we now know that the Kings of Leon like "New Moon," we're not any closer to figuring out if they — or Yorke — will appear on the soundtrack to the film. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
