Justin Timberlake, rapper Lupe Fiasco and singer Kenna are teaming up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, in an effort to raise awareness for the worldwide water crisis.

"My dad almost died as a child from waterborne diseases in Ethiopia, and he had talked to me about digging a well there, and I thought, 'I have too many friends who would be concerned with the subject of clean water. Maybe I can help out,' " Kenna told Elle magazine in a recent interview.

When asked about his motivation to hike up the 19,000-foot peak, Lupe Fiasco joked, "Part of the motivation is beating Kenna to the top. Sabotaging his tent, taking the lining out of his coat, lacing it with ants or something like that."

Kenna said there's a bit of friendly competition with Timberlake when it comes to training for the mission. "I refuse to work out with him, because he's way fitter than I am," Kenna told Elle. "I'm training in secret."

Timberlake is training like a pro, according to GQ. "I've been training four times a week to get my VO2 [oxygen consumption] levels up to expand my lungs," he told the magazine. "We'll climb for a week straight, carrying 30 pounds on our backs. It's going to be intense, but it's going to be so rewarding. Plus, we're going to be ready for it."

The mission will bring the three artists to the highest point in Africa, which boasts breathtaking views and three inactive volcanic cones. Though the climb is popular among tourists, the altitude and low temperature make this a difficult and dangerous trek. Those who make the climb typically suffer from shortness of breath, headaches and discomfort due to the limited amount of breathable oxygen. The three are set to embark on their journey this fall.

Twelve years ago, Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March descended on Washington D.C., in an effort to promote activism, volunteerism and voting among black men. This week, on a completely unrelated subject, many fewer new albums are hitting stores — perhaps in anticipation of October 23, which is shaping up to be an especially prolific Tuesday for new releases.

But just because there aren't a million new albums coming out, that hardly means we haven't found any to talk about this week. In fact, this week's lot of contenders, disparate as they might be, actually tie in quite nicely with each other.

Let's start with Jimmy Eat World, who are banking on their new single, "Big Casino," to mean big things for their new album, Chase This Light — the alt-rock vets went so far as to craft their album-release party as a faux casino night on Monday in Los Angeles. The band's last LP, 2004's Futures, went gold, as a matter of fact, so that could be a good sign of what's to come. Fans might want to pick up the iTunes version of the new disc, as it comes with two bonus tracks, although Insound and Smartpunk are offering a third tune as an extra.

While JEW are appearing at select outlets, two big-name artists are getting even more exclusive by putting out their new releases in just one store each. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' hefty "Runnin' Down a Dream" box set — loaded with three DVDs and a CD — is coming out via Best Buy only. It features Peter Bogdanovich's documentary, a soundtrack CD to the flick, a 30th anniversary concert, interviews with Eddie Vedder and Johnny Depp, and more.

KT Tunstall's new set isn't nearly as big as Petty's, but it's just as exclusive — you'll only find NBC Sounds of the Season: The KT Tunstall Holiday Collection at Target. The short CD, which costs $6.99, features six yuletide jingles: "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," "Sleigh Ride," "Mele Halihimaha (Christmas in Hawaii)," "Fairytale of New York," "2000 Miles" and "Lonely This Christmas." Elliott Yamin and Taylor Swift, who are also part of the NBC series this year, are getting similar releases this week.

The flood of Christmas releases continues with what might be the biggest release in the genre this year: Disney Channel Holiday. The disc features various artists — some girl named Miley; "High School Musical" pint-size powerhouses Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman; red-hot squads the Cheetah Girls and Jonas Brothers; Aly & AJ and more. The only artist who might have bigger holiday-release hopes is Toby Keith, although fans are going to have to throw down a few extra bucks for his two-CD A Classic Christmas. The country megastar's first holiday release in 12 years is divvied into contemporary and spiritual standards. Last but not least, Jars of Clay have finally molded their first Christmas album ever, if you can believe it. "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Wonderful Christmastime" and "Hibernation Day" are among their Christmas Songs.

Speaking of surprising career firsts, R.E.M. have finally roused themselves to make a concert CD for the first time in their 27 years. The simply titled Live immortalizes their concert at the Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, on February 27, 2005, in all its glory — the package has two CDs and one DVD, although the price tag is still likely to be relatively low compared to similar releases. Don't miss rare performances of "I Took Your Name" from 1994's Monster and "Ascent of Man" from 2004's Around the Sun, as well as the previously unissued "I'm Gonna DJ."

While R.E.M. mix the old in with the new on their concert package, Carlos Santana also made sure to keep his Ultimate Santana collection fresh. The collaboration-addicted guitar icon slaps three new ones onto the disc: Jennifer Lopez and Baby Bash join him on "This Baby's Fire," while Nickelback's Chad Kroeger croons on "Into the Night" and Tina Turner tags along for a reworking of "The Game of Love." ...

For her part, Angie Stone jammed with soul legends Betty Wright and James Ingram for two tracks — "Baby" and "My People," respectively — on her new LP, The Art of Love & War. Those partnerships are fitting, given that the album is dropping on the recently reactivated seminal soul label Stax. Stone wrote and co-produced most of the effort, which she actually recorded at Marvin Gaye's old Marvin's Room studio on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. In other soul news, Quannum has dug up the never-before-released first album by Chicago's Pieces of Peace, who disbanded in the late '70s. The group's self-titled album showcases its unique spiritual jazz-funk sound.

Ethiopian-born American newcomer Kenna dabbles in soul a little on his second outing, Make Sure They See My Face, which has been delayed numerous times. The 29-year-old artist — who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro after putting out his first album, New Sacred Cow, in 2003 — worked with the Neptunes on Face, which comes with a free ringtone and mobile-phone wallpaper. Tracks include "Daylight," "Phantom Always" and the first single, "Out of Control (State of Emotion)," which Mark Ronson debuted on his online East Village Radio show, "Authentic Sh--."

While Ronson's preview might have stirred things up for Kenna online, Thrice went whole hog by streaming their entire new album, The Alchemy Index: Vols. I & II: Fire & Water, on their MySpace page prior to the album's release. The conceptual project — overly conceptual, some say — revolves around the band separating its sound into distinct elements (or "elements," like fire, water, etc. — get it?). Still, the band also introduced new electronic sounds into its blend, especially with "Water," the second element (each of the four elements is supposed to act as an "EP," but they're being compiled as two CDs). In case that isn't elaborate enough, singer Dustin Kensrue went so far as to compose an original sonnet — organized in the traditional English structure and rhythmic fashion — for each element. Someone let us know when there's a CliffsNotes version available.

Song Title of the Week:

"Man With the Shovel, Is the Man I'm Going to Marry" from To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie's The Patron

Album Cover of the Week:

Underworld's Oblivion With Bells

Other Notables:

Maritime's Heresy and the Hotel Chair
The Milwaukee band, which formed from the remnants of post-rock heroes the Promise Ring and Dismemberment Plan, has put out a pair of albums since they were born in 2003. But drummer Dan Didier said in a recent statement that the group's new one is "the first time it actually feels like we are a band. Before, members came and went and it never seemed to be a cohesive unit, but, for this record the four of us all started at square one together so the songs reflect all four of us." The album features "Guns of Navarone" — named after the same-titled 1961 movie — "With Holes for Thumb Sized Birds" and "Aren't We All Found Out."

Jessica Vale's Brand New Disease
Want to get inspired? Why not take a trip to the Balkan Peninsula? The alt-rock singer/songwriter focuses on her journey abroad on a new ballad, "Night in Sarajevo," but she also draws on her local New York environs heavily throughout her second disc. "The base sound level in New York is significantly higher than anywhere else in the world, 90 decibels to be exact, so it takes much more intense music to feel like one of making a statement," she said in an, uh, statement.

Various artists' Eyeball Awareness Vol. 1
Underground acts are coming together for a good cause this week, with the Number 12 Looks Like You, Baumer, New Atlantic and others pitching in for the first volume in a four-part series. The Eyeball campaign, which is being unveiled at the CMJ Music Marathon, is being staged to support "To Write Love on Her Arms," a nonprofit movement dedicated to finding hope and help young people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

Mandy Moore has a Wild Hope this week — to defeat the mighty White Stripes — but after a sporadic music career, her chances to do so are almost nil. Beyoncé is also back, but don't get too excited — her "B'Day Anthology Video Album" DVD encompasses all the clips fans probably already grabbed on the B'Day - Deluxe Edition set that came out last year and was subsequently yanked due to a lawsuit. But don't worry, there are still loads of new tunes to fill up those long summer nights.

Feeling Icky?: The Stripes slip out their sixth album, Icky Thump, mere weeks before their 10th birthday — and they've busted out bagpipes, a mariachi trumpet, church organ and more wacky instruments for the occasion. Even more colorful is the story behind one of the tracks, "I'm Slowly Turning Into You": Noted collaborator Michel Gondry pitched them a video concept that would depict Jack White slowly morphing into Meg through the guise of 98 additional actors, and the singer/guitarist liked the idea so much that he wrote a song with the visual concept in mind. Don't even get us started on "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn," a song about the Scottish national flower.

Hope Floats: It's hard to pinpoint Mandy Moore's last tried-and-true release. Candy, issued in 2005, was a contractually obligated disc that culled old material she had previously disowned, and it didn't even chart on the Billboard 200. Before that was 2004's The Best of Mandy Moore, another compilation that reportedly ticked her off, and prior to that was Coverage — a batch of songs originally performed by other artists. That makes Wild Hope her first album of new studio material in six years — and this time around, she's co-written the whole shebang, with some help from Michelle Branch, Chantal Kreviazuk, Rachael Yamagata, and others. Songs include "Latest Mistake," "Can't You Just Adore Her?" and "Slummin' in Paradise."

Off the Hook: Chrisette Michele had a hand in Jay-Z's "Lost Ones" and Nas' "Can't Forget About You," singing on the hooks on both tracks. Now it's her time to shine — and Jay has returned the favor by issuing her debut on Def Jam. The soulful, jazz-influenced singer — who is set to open for Musiq Soulchild when he tours this summer — gets production help from Babyface, John Legend and Will.I.Am on I Am (how apropos!).

Stray Cats: Straylight Run jogged their way to one hell of a debut, getting rid of more than 200,000 copies of their independently released 2004 eponymous CD. The rock band — which features members of Taking Back Sunday — self-produced its second album, The Needles the Space, and the set includes "How Do I Fix My Head," "Soon We'll Be Living in the Future" and "The Miracle That Never Came."

Choppin' Time: Slimmed down to a threesome after the departure of bassist Kevin Rutmanis, Tomahawk actually sound larger than ever on their third album, Anonymous. Every bit as ambiguous and elusive as the title suggests, the album actually consists of Native American songs guitarist Duane Denison researched after collaborating years ago with cowboy from hell Hank Williams III. Appropriately titled songs include "Totem," "War Song" and four tracks named after dancing rituals.

Getting to Know ...: While you're probably familiar with most of the aforementioned artists, you might be overwhelmed by the litany of bands out there you've never even heard of. Here's some quick 411 on some other artists that are also cranking out CDs this week:

· The Aliens: No, Roky Erickson's old backing band isn't back from the dead — it's actually three founding duders from the Beta Band coming back together to create something that's more glam than trip-hop.

· The Confession: An Orange County, California, quintet that is going to be on this year's Warped Tour and counts Avenged Sevenfold's M. Shadows — who produced its Requiem debut — among its friends.

· Memphis: A lo-fi, soundscape-addicted band from Canada consisting of Stars co-founder Torquil Campbell and his pallie Chris Dumont.

· Lightning Dust: A minimalist project featuring two guys from groovy psych-rockers Black Mountain. Their self-titled debut was partially recorded in a cave, yo.

· Will Haven: This Sacramento, California, metal band played for a few years, then broke up in January 2002, then regrouped in October 2005. Their new album The Hierophant was co-produced by Deftones' Chino Moreno and ex-Far guitarist Shaun Lopez.

· Savath & Savalas: Another alias belonging to underground hip-hop producer Guillermo Scott Herren, who you probably best know as Prefuse 73. José González, Mia Doi Todd and Tarantula A.D. cellist Danny Bensi pay a visit on S&S' Golden Pollen.

· The Rondo Brothers: Not to be confused with Linkin Park's recently released Minutes to Midnight, these San Francisco producers' new one is titled Seven Minutes to Midnight and features contributions from Head Automatica/Glassjaw linchpin Daryl Palumbo.

· Von Südenfeld: An electro-dub-disco fusion thang featuring the Fall's Mark E. Smith and Mouse on Mars.

· Susperia: Formed by ex-members of Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon. But if you don't know your black metal, then you probably don't know those reference points either.

· Ron Block: Better known as a member of Alison Krauss' bluegrass-country collaborators, Union Station.

· The Marshall Tucker Band: If you aren't already familiar with these guys, you probably don't want to get to know them.

Song Title of the Week:

"Somebody Call Somebody" from Nora's Save Yourself

Album Cover of the Week:

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Needles-Space-Straylight-Run/dp/B000QUCQEW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-5873686-7476820?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1181953431&sr=1-1 target="_blank">Straylight Run's The Needle the Space

Other Notables:

· Art Brut's It's a Bit Complicated
"Is it so wrong / To break from a kiss to turn up a pop song?" "What's wrong? Scared to commit? Get on the dance floor, it's a direct hit!" Ah, yes, England's Art Brut are back, and frontman Eddie Argos has more amusing chatter to spill. The indie-rock five-piece — which has opened on tour for Ghostface, strangely — recorded its second effort with producer Dan Swift (Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol) at London's Terminal Studios. Songs — and no, you haven't heard these before, familiar as the titles might look — include: "Pump Up the Volume," "I Will Survive" and "Soundtrack of the Summer."

· Burning Brides' Hang Love
The Philadelphia rawkers bust out their third release this week, and the track list ranges from a song about a forlorn lover ("She Comes to Me") to one about a serial killer on the loose ("Waring Street"). The band — which includes a married couple — used to be on V2 but has now partnered with indie imprint Modart for the release. That probably means less exposure for the group, but the move gives the Brides more control over their material — and the right to own the Hang Love master tapes, best of all.

· The Number Twelve Looks Like You's Mongrel
The spazz-metal band — whose name is taken from a 1964 episode of "The Twilight Zone" — titled its third album as such because the songs are so indefinable. As singer Jesse Korman told MTV News, "We wanted this album to be just complete chaos, with no direction at all." The band elaborates on the disc on its Web site, saying in a post: "A product of harried miscegenation, a foaming mix breed halved and re-halved by the pitifully obvious and the suddenly homicidal, Mongrel is a collusion of conflicting desires and uncontrollable urges, a heart-eating hellion seesawing wildly between the need for stasis and an unflinching commitment to violence." Sold?

NEW YORK — Kenna recently spent some time in the studio with an old high school friend, tweaking his next single.

That might not seem noteworthy, except for the fact that Kenna went to the same Virginia Beach, Virginia, high school as the Neptunes. The famed production duo's Chad Hugo produced Kenna's New Sacred Cow a few years ago (see "Kenna Leaves The Shadows Of Fred Durst, Neptunes For His Own Spotlight") but just recently remixed "Sunday After You" to prepare it for a radio push.

"I think it's the door-kicker-opener song, the beat-the-people-with-the-beat song," Kenna said of the tune, which would have fit nicely on Depeche Mode's Violator. "We're excited about it. We've never made an attempt at going after radio and being really focused on it because we wanted to just develop a fanbase based on merit and music, so we'll see what happens."

Even if Hugo's second version, which will follow-up the MTV2 favorite "Freetime," is not a hit, Kenna has a backup plan.

"Pharrell might do a remix of our remix," he said, smiling. "He's like my biggest advocate and also my devil's advocate. He's like, 'You're not in your own video?' "

Kenna describes "Sunday After You" — which includes the chorus "Nothing's what it seems" along with verses like "I swear my heart is broken by your words again" — as a very personal song. That's not to say he'll appear in the video this time. That will be up to the director.

"I just want to have a really classic video," he said. "To me, you have to make a video that you can turn off the volume and watch it. The video has to stand alone without my music for it to be a true video. I would love to work with Michel Gondry (the White Stripes). I would love to work with Spike Jonze (Weezer). Or Jonathan Glazer (Radiohead)."

Before Kenna begins propositioning directors, however, he plans to finish his tour with New York electro duo Fischerspooner.

"I'm getting lucky with these tours," said Kenna, who spent the summer on MTV's You Hear It First Tour (see "Kenna, Exies, Fiction Plane Kick Off You Hear It First Tour In Cali") and with Depeche Mode's David Gahan. "I fit on every bill. I can do anything, but it's hard to convince people of that in the beginning."

Kenna will need that "I can do anything" attitude for his next venture.

"I'm climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro at the end of December/ early January, so I'm training for that right now," he said. "I'm going to reach the top and scream to God about all the things he could have done while I was growing up and come back down a kindler, gentler Kenna."

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — "We're cool, we're different," Fiction Plane's Joe Sumner sang at Tuesday's kickoff of the MTV You Hear It First Tour, unknowingly providing the perfect description of the outing.

And judging by the performances, the bands on the House of Blues bill, which also included Kenna and the Exies, are certainly different — from each other and from the flavors currently controlling rock radio. Adding to the uniqueness of the rock edition of the tour (Bubba Sparxxx and Common are headlining an urban version) is that there's not yet a legitimate hit between the three acts.

Fiction Plane opened their set channeling heavy Nirvana influences into a decidedly British rock foundation — like Bush, but with the garage rock wail and curious coolness of the Strokes.

After opening with the title track to their debut, Everything Will Never Be OK, the foursome put a surprisingly romantic twist on the cynical "Hate."

Frontman Joe Sumner makes nothing of being Sting's son (see "Fiction Plane Sulk, Sneer And Mope — Who The Heck Is Sting?"), but it's hard to forget live. Even the way he frames his mouth around the microphone with his hands at his sides is reminiscent of his dad. And when he melodically sings intense lines other artists would scream, it recalls one of the charms of the Police's more rocking tunes.

After two years of waiting, Radiohead finally give fans what they want this week: Hail to the Thief. This more extroverted and politically minded album features the songs "Backdrifts," "2+2=5" and the first single, "There There."

Last year's "American Idol" runner-up throws his hat into the ring this week with his album Justin Guarini. On the record is the single he performed on this year's "American Idol," a cover of "Unchained Melody," plus a duet with Kelly Clarkson called "Timeless."

Pearl Jam are sending stores two live albums from the official bootleg series they've been selling online — one from Perth, Australia, the other from Tokyo. Duran Duran's The Singles '81-'85 box set features all the old, amazing, familiar faces, including "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio," "Reflex" and "Wild Boys."

Fountains of Wayne's third album, Welcome Interstate Managers, finds the New York pop-rockers tackling such pressing subjects as love, work, bad waitresses and clip-on ties. Also out this week is Grandaddy's Sumday, which mostly finds the group navel-gazing about getting their lives together, and Mest's self-titled album, which includes the single "Jaded," featuring Good Charlotte's Benji Madden.

Finally, Joe Budden and Inspectah Deck release Joe Budden and The Movement, respectively, while Annie Lennox gets Bare and the Buzzcocks revisit their Inventory. Now on to the rest of our stock.

SANTA MONICA, California — More than two years after Fred Durst walked him down the red carpet at the Grammys touting him as the next big thing, Kenna's debut is finally seeing the light of day. Only now there's no backwards red ball cap in sight.

Kenna recorded the original version of New Sacred Cow in 1999, after asking a Virginia Beach, Virginia, high school friend, Chad Hugo, to help him make an album inspired by his favorite bands, most notably the Cars and U2.

When Hugo's own project, his production team the Neptunes, became the hottest hitmakers in music, Kenna was snatched up by the highest profile upstart at the time, Durst's Flawless Records.

The problem was that Kenna found himself running into the same roadblock there as when he was shopping the album before the Neptunes exploded.

" 'Your record, your music is refreshing, Kenna,' " the Ethiopia-born singer said, impersonating a record-label executive. " 'Man, it's amazing. We're gonna definitely talk to your attorneys.' And nobody called. Some of them came to the table and tried to do something, but I don't think the record was what they could put into a box and package and sell.

"I'm just," he continued, pausing to clear his thoughts, "an artist, to me, isn't one that fits the mold. It's one who makes a mold. And I refuse to think of myself as a carbon copy of anything. I'm not made to order."

According to Kenna, a revamped New Sacred Cow was finished before Flawless' Puddle of Mudd even entered the studio. Still, their album came and went without the label giving Kenna a release date.

"Some people would say that I was a little bit impatient, but I felt like waiting two years after the record was done to put it out was incredibly patient," Kenna explained. "I went to Fred and I just basically said, 'If you let me out of my deal, I'll never make music again.' I mean, that's how frustrated I was and how willing I was to leave."

Fortunately for the singer, Durst acted, as Kenna put it, "noble."

"He said, 'I want you to make music and I really respect you as an artist and I'm still gonna let you go. I just know that it's right for you to do what you need to do and maybe it's right for you to do it elsewhere,' " Kenna recalled. "It wasn't Fred's fault. For the most part, I think it was just bureaucratic bullsh--."

It took Kenna a few months, but he eventually signed with Columbia Records, which is releasing New Sacred Cow June 10.

"I just have to consider myself blessed," Kenna said, displaying the jovial personality he's known for around Los Angeles. "Nobody gets to get out of one deal with the same record and sign another record deal and put the same record out. It just doesn't happen."

Over the course of fighting to release his debut, Kenna has written enough new material for two more albums. However, he still believes New Sacred Cow needs to be heard.

"Chad Hugo is a genius — flat-out, absolute, complete genius," Kenna said. "And, when I sat down with him, we literally made a list of criteria every song had to meet before it hit the record … I wanted every human being to listen to the album and if they don't like one song, they're going to like another one, if they don't like something about this, they're going to like something about that.

"We made this record so it would stand the test of time," he continued. "We didn't make a record that would fit 'the '60s, the '70s, the '80s or today. It's not like that. We wrote a record that is just supposed to be heard now or 10 years from now, and it's always going to be classic."

New Sacred Cow takes influences from each of those decades, but sounds like none of them. The exception might be the first single, "Freetime," which, when Kenna performed it during N.E.R.D.'s set at Coachella, had the music industry-packed VIP area guessing which '80s hit he was covering.

" 'Freetime' is about leaving something you love only to realize [that] what you had in the first place was the best thing, but the consequence might be that the person, or the thing that you had, isn't the same or isn't there," he said. "It's meant to kind of teach a lesson, or maybe it's a little didactic message about [how] grass isn't always greener on the other side."

For Kenna, though — at least this time — it is.
