After recording for Buddy Killen's Dial label in 1965, Kelly debuted on the R&B charts with "Stealing in the Name of the Lord" in 1970 for Happy Tiger Records. Killen produced some of Kelly's subsequent output for Warners Brothers in Nashville, including the grinding "Don't Burn Me" in 1973.
