A number of this year's Grammy Award categories feature artists who some say are miscategorized, or don't appear to have much of a chance. Last week we asked you about Radiohead's nomination for Album of the Year ... now we'd like to tap you on a few more categories.

Best Metal Performance:
[Nominees: Deftones, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Pantera, Slipknot]
Who in this category are really metal? Does a band such as Deftones have metal cred when compared with Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Pantera?

Best Rap Solo Performance:
[Nominees: Common, DMX, Eminem, Mystikal, Nelly]
Common, a presumed underdog nominee, faces an uphill battle against powerhouse ballers and hardcore competition. What do you think Common's chances are?

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance:
[Nominees: Christina Aguilera, Macy Gray, Madonna, Aimee Mann, Joni Mitchell, Britney Spears]
Do résumés of critical credibility for artists such as Joni Mitchell, Aimee Mann and Macy Gray even matter in this category, or is this a beauty contest?

Let us know what you make of these nominations — send your opinions to You Tell Us.

The Stone Temple Pilots decided to pull out of a planned appearance at Thursday night's taping of "An All-Star Tribute To Joni Mitchell" in New York City after frontman Scott Weiland blew out his voice over the course of several STP performances on Wednesday.
The band was supposed to be third act to take the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom for the TNT-sponsored show (see "Elton John, More Set For Joni Mitchell Tribute") and was slated to perform one of Mitchell's most popular tunes, "Woodstock."
But as Weiland explained to the MTV Radio Network, he didn't feel that his voice was up to the task after a singing for a total of seven hours during gigs for "The Howard Stern Show," MTV's "TRL," and an Irving Plaza concert the previous day.
"Wednesday [was] the night of the secret show at Irving Plaza," Weiland said, Weiland added, "and my voice was shot. So there was not a chance in hell that I could have gotten up and sang a sweet falsetto tune like that. I had no high end in my voice. I sounded like George Burns when I woke up." [RealAudio]
Despite missing the Mitchell tribute, Stone Temple Pilots
undoubtedly blew the lid off their Irving Plaza show, delivering an 18-song performance to celebrate the group's first New York show in three years.
STP delivered blistering versions of "Crackerman," the set opener, and such FM-radio nuggets as "Wicked Garden" and "Vaseline" before a packed house that included such celebrities as Heather Graham and Hole's Courtney Love.
The band switched off its electric instruments for a five-song acoustic interlude that featured some of STP's usually more aggressive material, including "Creep," "Interstate Love Song," "Plush," as well as its new single, "Sour Girl."
After reminiscing about how he missed a solo show back in 1998 when the police intervened (see "Scott Weiland Arrested In Heroin Bust"), and taking a poke at Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Weiland and STP capped off the evening with a rousing "Sex Type Thing."
Stone Temple Pilots will play several radio shows over the next
few months and are planning to hook up with the Red Hot Chili Peppers for some additional tour dates this summer.

Folk-jazz singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell is the latest artist to get the musical tribute treatment from TNT, as Shawn Colvin, Elton John, and Richard Thompson have all signed on to perform for "An All-Star Tribute To Joni Mitchell."
The concert will be taped at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on April 6 with actress Ashley Judd hosting. Judd's sister, Wynonna, will also play the gig, along with Chaka Khan, Cassandra Wilson, k.d. lang, and Diana Krall.
Mitchell, who was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1997, has been a primary influence on such contemporary female artists as Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, and Fiona Apple.
She scored a series of hit singles in the '60s and '70s, including "Chelsea Morning" (which inspired the name of President Clinton's daughter), "Big Yellow Taxi," "Woodstock," and "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio," among others.
Organizers for the Joni Mitchell tribute say that more artists and guests will be
added to the lineup in the next few weeks, with an edited version of the concert special currently slated to premiere on TNT on April 16 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)
The event marks the fourth in the "TNT Master Series," which began back in April 1998 with "Burt Bacharach: One Amazing Night," and continued the following year with a show feting Johnny Cash (see "Springsteen, Wyclef, U2, Matthews, More Come Out For Cash").
TNT's most recent tribute special was held this past December in Jamaica and celebrated the life and work of reggae legend Bob Marley (see "Lauryn Hill, Eve, Busta Rhymes, Ben Harper Catch A Fire At Marley Tribute Show").

Woodstock '99 Set For Europe

Plans for Woodstock '99, a massive music extravaganza to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the historic 1969 festival is being solidified in Europe, although it appears the U.S. version still needs a more few I's dotted and T's crossed. Billboard reports that original festival co-founder Michael Lang, who also organized the Woodstock 1994 event, is planning a massive concert in Europe one week in advance of an American event which is also being organized by Lang.

The European extravaganza will run July 16 to 18 in Wiener-Neustadt, 25 miles outside Vienna. The publication reports that the festivities will include 100 acts on four stages in an area designed to hold 300,000 people. A sign of the times, they are also including "Kid Stock" features as well as other attractions. The initial artists are expected to be announced in January.

The U.S. Woodstock '99 is being planned for July 23 to 25 in Saugerties, New York, assuming Lang receives all his necessary permits.
A town council meeting in Saugerties earlier this week outlined a number of new regulations and restrictions the festival organizers must meet. Lang and crew, operating as Woodstock Ventures (the original name of the organizing body in 1969), have not formally submitted their application, but it's expected to be approved when they do.

If so, the show will again be mounted at the 900-acre Winston Farms that hosted 350,000 people in 1994. The area is seven miles from the town of Woodstock. The original site, Yasgur Farm in Bethel, N.Y., was actually an hour's drive from Woodstock.

There is some confusion regarding the Woodstock festivities. A rival celebration is expected to be held at the original site in Bethel in the week of the actual anniversary -- the event was first staged August 15 to 18, 1969. Most of the Yasgur land is now controlled by multi-millionaire Allan Gerry's non-profit Gerry Foundation, which staged the "Day in the Garden" event there last year.
(see: Day In The Garden Ticket Prices Cut After Sluggish Sales). At that time, Gerry called his event "the beginning of a renaissance" for the property. In addition to the anniversary celebration, the land is also expected to eventually host some one-day concerts.

Meanwhile, both Woodstock '99 and Day In the Garden are being protested by Woodstock purists. They favor a free "friends of the farm" event over the commercial ventures currently on the table, and have been planning their own gatherings in the area. The group has been meeting at the farmhouse previously owned by the late Max Yasgar, which does not fall under Gerry's holdings.

Joni Mitchell, one of the most admired and accomplished songwriters of the rock era, released the 19th album of her career this week, "Taming the Tiger," Mitchell's first in four years.
Mitchell has kept a fairly low profile since the release of her last record, 1994's "Turbulent Indigo," spending most of the time tracking down -- and eventually reuniting with -- a daughter she gave up for adoption over 30 years ago, and in 1997 released a book of her collected lyrics and poems.
MTV News' Chris Connelly sat down for a rare interview with Mitchell recently, and discovered that even at age 54, the woman who helped inspire artists ranging from Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow to Missy Elliott and Angelique Kidjo -- remains completely untamed.
For more on Connelly's interview with Mitchell, check out his report right here in streaming RealVideo.
As we previously reported (see "Joni Mitchell Tries To Bring Concert To Television"),
Mitchell has found a home for her pay-per-view performance on satelite carriers USSB and Viewers Choice. The special airs Friday, November 6.

Ticket sales for this weekend's Day in the Garden festival, the three-day commemoration of the 1969 Woodstock festival being held in Bethel, New York, don't appear to be coming up roses.

Originally set at $69.98 for the weekend, ticket prices have been slashed to $35 for the Friday and Saturday shows, and $25 for the alterna-laden Sunday concert. Don Henley and Stevie Nicks headline Friday, Joni Mitchell and Pete Townshend share the honors Saturday, while the Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind are set for Sunday.

For Joni Mitchell, the singer-songwriter perhaps most influential on the "Lilith" generation of female artists, the concert will mark the first time she has ever performed in the place she immortalized three decades ago in her classic paean to the show, "Woodstock," which she wrote even though she never made it to the festival.

Her friends in Crosby, Stills & Nash, who scored a hit with their version of Mitchell's "Woodstock", did get out to Yasgur's
Farm, and told her about it upon their return.

"They showed up raving about it," Mitchell told MTV News, "which was really like salt in the wound. When I see the clips [from 'Woodstock'], I can almost see myself [crying] -- on camera and all that. Cause to be young then and to have missed that, even though it was that close, that was everything to me." [400k QuickTime]

"But I guess it was meant for a reason," she continued, "and because I couldn't go, [Woodstock] dominated my mind. I watched everything on TV, I just sat in front of the TV and wrote most of the song in the first few days [400k QuickTime] of the festival, and it was done by Sunday night."

According to a report in "Performance" magazine, Mitchell and Nicks will each take home $450,000 for their work, while Henley and Townshend are each fetching $550,000.

Lackluster ticket sales for this weekend's Day In The Garden, the three-day Woodstock commemoration in Bethel, New York, have prompted show organizers to cut ticket prices in an effort to beef up crowds.

Don Henley and Stevie Nicks will perform on Friday with Pete Townsend, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, and Donovan taking the stage on Saturday. The show's third day boasts a younger feel with Third Eye Blind, the Goo Goo Dolls, Marcy Playground, and Joan Osbourne among that day's performers.

Tickets were initially priced at $69.98 for the weekend, but were then reduced to a buy-one-get-one-free deal. They've since been cut to $35 for Friday and Saturday and $25 for Sunday.

A spokesperson for "Performance" magazine, which monitors such events, says a 2-for-1 deal is usually the first indication of soft sales, and that the event itself is not very "user friendly" since there are no onsite camping facilities available and lawn chairs were initially banned. The "Performance"
spokesperson also noted that Day In The Garden is also trying to tie into Woodstock nostalgia without actually having the rights to use the name "Woodstock."
