Move over No Strings Attached. Make room for No Hair Attached.
A London publicity firm is forming the world's first "man band," a pop group consisting of five musically talented men over the age of 50.

"If you look at Tom Jones, Elton John and Mick Jagger, these guys are getting better as they get older," said Kizzi Nkwocha, an executive at 15 Minutes, the company launching the project. "We're not sure why no one has thought of this before. Instead you have all of these young musical
butterflies. They look beautiful for a few days and then they die."
Nkwocha's "man band" — a variation of the "boy band" label often bestowed upon the likes of 'NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys — is coming together in a manufactured fashion similar to the Spice Girls and New Kids on the Block.

15 Minutes quietly placed want ads in several British music and acting magazines less than two weeks ago, and 2,417 men have applied as of today (April 3), Nkwocha said. The company is screening demo tapes and reading bios to narrow the field down to 20 finalists.

Once the group's members are chosen, a team of veteran singer/songwriters will put the "man band" to work on new music. Nkwocha will be in charge of creating their image.

"It will be a pop band, which is a huge departure from what most musicians over 50 are doing," Nkwocha said. "There certainly will be choreography. They won't be doing Boyzone moves, but they will perform as a group."
The "man band" is expected to be formed within two weeks and the chosen ones will immediately enter the studio to record their first single, which could be out by mid-May.

"Fortunately we have a good relationship with a lot of record labels," said Nkwocha, whose clients include the still rolling '60s Scottish pop group the Bay City Rollers and several soap opera stars. "We have labels interested, but we want them to hear the single first. We want to sell the band on their talent and not because they had people opening doors for them."
Several British TV studios have contacted 15 Minutes about doing a documentary series on the group à la "Popstars" or "Making the Band," but Nkwocha said they are being cautious about how they handle the group.

"Most of the men we are looking at have families," he said. "We don't want to put them in a situation where they have to go into hiding because so many people are trying to meet them."
Nkwocha and his coworkers came up with the "man band" concept during a weekly brainstorming session that had turned to "why boy bands suck." The participants decided older men with real talent were being unfairly overlooked.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook with reporters from America to Japan," Nkwocha said. "We're already becoming a global phenomenon."

Slash Joins Tom Jones For D.C. Gala

Slash played the giant America's Millennium Gala in Washington, D.C. on New Year's Eve, but things didn't go exactly as planned.
The former Guns N' Roses guitarist was originally scheduled to perform in an all-star rock band fronted by John Fogerty. After bonding with Tom Jones in the hotel bar prior to the show, however, Slash opted to play with the Welsh crooner instead (see "Slash, Others To Rock America's Millennium With Will Smith, Bono, More").
The leather-clad rocker missed out on Jones' rendition of his '60s hit "It's Not Unusual," but he joined the hip-swinging singer front and center for the Gala's post-midnight finale. Sporting his traditional top hat, Slash joined Jones and other key Gala performers for workouts of the Wilson Pickett classic "In The Midnight Hour," Bob Marley's "One Love," and a post-broadcast rendition of "This Land Is Your Land," complete with a "Hallelujah" chorus.
Slash's manager Tom
Maher told MTV News that the rocker went back to the White House for a post-show party, where he hung out mostly with Jones and country popster Kenny Rogers. Maher added that it's a good bet that Slash will work with Jones in the future.
"They really got along great," Maher said. "They definitely bonded."
The Gala, hosted by Will Smith and organized by Quincy Jones, featured a variety of musical styles, poetry, and commentary relating to the past century, all presented to a crowd of roughly 500,000 people in front of the Lincoln Memorial. There were other unusual pairings over the course of the evening, including Trisha Yearwood and Brian McKnight performing the 1968 protest song "Abraham, Martin and John" (made famous by Dion), Usher and Kris Kristofferson duetting on The Band's hit "The Weight," and Kathy Mattea and Luther Vandross teaming up for The Impressions' classic "People Get Ready."
Other veterans performed their best known hits, including Fogerty offering up Creedence
Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary," Foreigner's Lou Gramm and Mick Jones performing "I Want to Know What Love Is," and Don McLean singing "American Pie."
A major highlight of the production saw U2's Bono and the band's producer, Daniel Lanois, perform an acoustic version of "One," preceded by a moving speech on world unity. The Irish singer was introduced by President Clinton.

-- Sorelle Saidman

Welsh crooner Tom Jones is jumping back on the rock-duet bandwagon with an album of collaborations with artists such as Robbie Williams, Barenaked Ladies, Chrissie Hynde, Van Morrison, the Cardigans, and Natalie Imbruglia.
Jones (who turned 59 this week), best known for schmaltzy hits like "What's New Pussycat," and "It's Not Unusual," returned to the charts in 1998 when he collaborated with Art of Noise on a cover of Prince's "Kiss." A similar formula will be in full effect on Jones' new album, "Reload!" which will feature mostly cover songs and duets with plenty of cutting-edge artists.
According to U.K. label Gut Records, the other guests on "Reload!" include Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, Manic Street Preachers' James Dean Bradfield, Stereophonics' Kelly Jones, the James Taylor Quartet, the Divine Comedy, and Heather Small of M People. Catatonia's Cerys Matthews and Space, who collaborated on the U.K. hit/homage "The Ballad of Tom Jones," are slated to appear on the album as
well.
Also featured on the album will be songs that were originally recorded by Iggy Pop, Lenny Kravitz, Talking Heads, INXS, the Kinks, and Portishead, among others.
According to Gut, the overall producer for the project is Stephen Hague (New Order, James), and the record will be out this September. A U.S. release is expected, but no information is currently available.
The track list has not yet been finalized, but here's what Tom will be singing and who he'll be swinging with on "Reload!" thus far:

"Burning Down the House" (Talking Heads) with the Cardigans
"Never Tear Us Apart" (INXS) with Natalie Imbruglia
"Are You Gonna Go My Way?" (Lenny Kravitz) with Robbie Williams
"Little Green Bag" (George Baker Selection) with Barenaked Ladies
"Lust for Life" (Iggy Pop) with Chrissie Hynde
"Ain't That a Lot of Love" (Sam and Dave) with Mick Hucknall
"All Mine" (Portishead) with the Divine Comedy
"I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone" (Elvis
Presley) with James Dean Bradfield
"Mama Told Me Not To Come" (Three Dog Night) with Kelly Jones
"Sometimes We Cry" (Van Morrison) with Van Morrison
"You Need Love Like I Do" (Gladys Knight and the Pips) with Heather Small
