Joi Gilliam possesses extensive training in various arts, including dance, theater, painting, and poetry, as well as music. After dropping out of college in order to avoid social conformity, she bounced around the country for several years writing poetry and looking for a record deal. The deal finally materialized when she met producer Dallas Austin, who had worked with such artists as TLC, Boyz II Men, and Another Bad Creation.
