When William Reid stormed offstage during a Jesus and Mary Chain show in Los Angeles on September 12, few gave the band much of a chance of surviving and completing its first U.S. tour in close to five years.

The band was supposed to be on the road to support its critically-acclaimed new record, "Munki," but the behind-the-scenes pressure of making the album eventually came to a head during the House of Blues concert, which ended with William and Jim verbally slugging it out on-stage.

But after the abbreviated L.A. gig, Jim Reid and longtime bassist/guitarist Ben Lurie quickly decided that what was left of Jesus and Mary Chain would soldier on and fulfill its road commitments -- including a string of tour-ending dates set for Japan.

"I've actually enjoyed myself on this tour," Jim Reid said,

Future plans, including those for the Mary Chain and its offer to cover the Pixies' "Debaser" for an upcoming tribute record, remain in limbo. Both Lurie and Jim Reid indicated their immediate post-JAMC tour plans would focus on a new band with members of the British ambient pop-group, Spiritualized.

"[Ben and I] have been talking about doing a project outside the Mary Chain for a while," Reid explained,

Lurie and Reid will head into the Mary Chain's recording studios, the Drugstore, with Spiritualized drummer Damon Reece and bassist Sean Cook, to start work on demos for the as-yet-unnamed country group early next year.

Brooding British rockers Jesus and Mary Chain are back with its first album of new material in almost four years, entitled "Munki," due out June 9.

The band premiered some of the songs on a stripped-down club tour earlier this month in the U.S., although the band will be plugging in and unleashing their trademark guitar maelstrom on a handful of British dates in April. The low-key shows will allow the Mary Chain to incorporate new bassist Phil King, formerly of Lush, into the band's live performance.

The new album features yet another collaboration with Mazzy Star vocalist Hope Sandoval on the song "Perfume." Sandoval, who has been romantically linked in the past with Mary Chain singer/guitarist William Reid in the past, appeared on the group's 1994 track, "Sometimes Always." Reid later returned the favor by playing on Mazzy Star's 1996 album, "Among My Swan."

One of the tracks from "Munki" is literally a family affair, as Linda Reid, sister of Mary Chainers William
and Jim, contributes vocals to "Moe Tucker," which a spokesperson for the band says was both a reference to the band's constant comparisons to the seminal '60s group the Velvet Underground, as well as an honest observation on how much Linda's shimmering voice resembles the VU drummer's.

The closing track from the record, "I Hate Rock 'n' Roll" was written by William and originally appeared on the album of the same name, the last the band recorded for Warner Brothers before returning to the U.K. based imprint Creation -- which is releasing "Munki" via Sub Pop in the U.S. The song inspired Jim to write the opening cut of the new record, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," which the spokesperson says was a declaration by the band that they weren't bitter about music or the industry.

The track listing for the new record:

I Love Rock 'n' Roll
Birthday
Stardust Remedy
Fizzy
Moe Tucker
Perfume
Virtually Unreal
Degenerate
Crackin'
Up
Commercial
Supertramp
Never Understood
I Can't Find the Time for Time
Man on the Moon
Black
Dream Lover
I Hate Rock 'n' Roll

Jesus and Mary Chain will play the festival circuit in Europe before it launches a U.S. tour in August.

Jesus And Mary Chain Back To Creation?

December 16 [14:00 EDT] -- There is no official word yet, but the Jesus And Mary Chain may be rejoining the label that first signed them, Creation Records.

According to a report in NME, the band left their current label, Blanco Y Negro, where they have been for thirteen years, where they ultimately released of their debut LP, "Psychocandy," in 1985.

Reportedly, Blanco Y Negro were less than happy with the band's follow-up to '95's "Stoned And Dethroned" and requested that the Jesus And Mary Chain rerecord the album. The band refused and decided to amicably move on, perhaps moving back to Creation where they were signed for one year in 1984.

Former Lush bassist, Phil King, has joined the band. And a tour of the UK and a new single will promote the new album, which is tentatively scheduled for an April release.
