Look Out: Ryan Cabrera might not have finished high school, but he's certainly got skills, having produced his second record, You Stand Watching, all by himself. On top of that, he recorded the sucker in a mere three weeks. Tracks include: "Shine On" (first single), "Hit Me With Your Light" and "It's You."

Pollinating Pac: The Rose, Vol. 2 - Music Inspired by Tupac's Poetry commemorates the ninth anniversary of the rapper's death and finds Ludacris, Memphis Bleek, Talib Kweli and others using Pac's poetry as a launch pad for songs of their own. Teenagers Morgan McKenzie and Amber Granderson bring his story full-circle with the final track, "Poetry"; they're students at Pac's Kids, a summer performing-arts camp set up in memory of the rapper. Tracks include: "In the Depths of Solitude" (featuring Ludacris), "Power of a Smile" (featuring Bone Thugs-N-Harmony) and "Life Through My Eyes" (featuring Memphis Bleek and Tupac).

5 Alive: Maroon 5 flipped the name of their CD/DVD combo collection from Live at the Santa Barbara Bowl to the more foreboding Live - Friday the 13th. It's hitched with a bonus DVD featuring an interview with writer/director Mitch Glaser and a photo montage consisting of behind-the-scenes and live footage. Tracks include: "Wasted Years" (unreleased song), "Hello" (Oasis cover) and "She Will Be Loved."

A Novel Idea: As if Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness wasn't enough to chew on, Coheed and Cambria are putting out a 118-page graphic novel to coincide with the long-winded release. Good Apollo tracks include: "Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)," "The Suffering" and "Crossing the Frame."

DualDiscs Galore: Adding extra incentives for fans to buy instead of burn, the video portion of Bon Jovi's limited-edition Have a Nice Day DualDisc has five live clips from a November 2004 gig in Atlantic City, New Jersey, plus a behind-the-scenes video for the title track and a sticker to boot. Flip over Jamiroquai's Dynamite and you'll find two videos and an interview, while David Banner's Certified has some top-secret video goodies.

As Heard On TV: With the Emmys still fresh, the record racks are crossing over into TV land with the "Desperate Housewives" soundtrack (featuring Liz Phair, Macy Gray and Joss Stone); Rock Star: A Night at the Mayan Theatre, a companion to the INXS show; and "American Idol" contender LaToya London's Love & Life. Also, PBS packages three of its specials in video-disc form: the Martin Scorsese-directed Dylan biopic "No Direction Home"; the Carter Family's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken"; and "The Sixties: The Years That Shaped a Generation."

Astral Week: Tupac Shakur's The Rose, Vol. 2 captures Talib Kweli wishing on a "Fallen Star"; George Michael decides to "Blame It on the Sun" on Ray Charles' Genius & Friends; Coheed and Cambria take off with Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness; Pilotdrift see "Comets" on Water Sphere; and Trio da Paz "Look to the Sky" on Somewhere. In the meantime, Earth (Hex [Or Printing in the Infernal Method]) and Earth, Wind & Fire (Illumination) stay closer to home. Also going the global route are Alicia Keys and Jermaine Paul ("If This World Were Mine," on So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross); Anthax ("In My World," on Alive 2 (2005)); Jordis Unga (covering David Bowie's "Man Who Sold the World," on Rock Star); Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash ("King of the World," on Mile Markers); Most Precious Blood ("World War You," on Merciless); Bif Naked ("The World Is Over," on Superbeautifulmonster); New Order ("World in Motion," on their "A Collection" DVD); Cage ("Perfect World," on Hell's Winter); the Last Dance ("World Down," on Once Beautiful); and the Cruxshadows ("Edge of the World," on the "Sleepwatching: Volume 1" comp).

Song Titles Of The Week:

Horse the Band - "Octopus on Fire" (The Mechanical Hand)

Most Precious Blood - "Narcoleptic Sleepwalker" (Merciless)

Shaggy - "Ready Fi Di Ride" (Clothes Drop)

Other Notables:

Miri Ben-Ari's The Hip-Hop Violinist and Ray Charles' Genius & Friends: The Jay-Z/Wyclef collaborator has arrived at long last, and she joins forces on her maiden release with Kanye, Fabolous and Musiq ("Fly Away"); Scarface ("Sunshine to the Rain"); and John Legend and Consequence ("I've Been Waiting on You"). Don't miss the bonus reggaetón remix of "Jump & Spread Out," with Fatman Scoop, Zion, Lennox and Pitbull along for the ride. John Legend also crops up on Genius & Friends, which also features Mary J. Blige, Diana Ross and Angie Stone. (And, on that note, Rhino issues the behemoth Pure Genius: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1952-1959) the same day.)

Disturbed's Ten Thousand Fists: The metal band enlisted comic-book guru Todd McFarlane for a special edition of its latest; he crafts original art for the expanded, 24-page booklet. Previously, iTunes offered a video for "Stricken," a bonus track ("Monster") and a McFarlane sketch with pre-orders.

So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross, Love to Love You, Baby: A Tribute to Donna Summer and The Killer in You: A Tribute to Smashing Pumpkins: The speedily released Vandross tribute corrals Beyoncé, Elton John, Wyclef and Donna Summer, who gets her own salute the same day via Tom Tom Club, Soft Cell, Heart and others. On the other end of the spectrum, Poison the Well, A Static Lullaby and Hopesfall give Smashing Pumpkins a metalcore makeover with The Killer in You.

Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay's legal funk has just been junked by U.K. prosecutors.

Assault and criminal damage charges were dropped by the attorneys because they couldn't compile enough evidence for a case against Kay, according to an Epic Records spokesperson.

The charges stem from an April 14 incident, when Kay was arrested outside of the Attica nightclub in London's West End for allegedly punching photographer Dennis Gill and breaking his camera, worth about $367. The singer pleaded not guilty to the accusations in October (see "Jamiroquai Singer Pleads Not Guilty To Assault Charges").

"I am pleased the charges have been dismissed," Kay said in a statement. "I always maintained they had no grounds for these allegations and I'm glad sense has prevailed."

Jamiroquai's latest album, A Funk Odyssey, the follow-up to 1999's Synkronized, was released September 11.

Jamiroquai lead singer Jay Kay appeared in a U.K. court Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and criminal damage stemming from an incident earlier this year in which he was arrested for hitting a photographer.

The photographer, Dennis Gill, alleges that on April 14, Jay Kay punched him and destroyed camera equipment worth 250 pounds (about $367) outside the Attica nightclub in London's West End, according to a spokesperson for Bow Street Magistrates Court, where the singer appeared.

The case was adjourned until October 22.

Jamiroquai's latest album, A Funk Odyssey, was released September 11 in the United States. Neither the singer nor his U.S. label had any comment at press time.

Cows are sedentary creatures. They like to eat grass, stand still and occasionally moo. And they don't like to rock. However, they do seem to enjoy calming pop ballads.

That's what a pair of scientists at Leicester University determined after playing a variety of songs to more than 1,000 Holstein-Friesians. Dr. Adrian North and researcher Liam MacKenzie found that the cattle that heard slower music produced 3 percent more milk than average cows did.

R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts," Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and Aretha Franklin's version of "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" were among the songs most enjoyed by the bovine crowd.

However, faster songs seemed to trouble the animals, slightly reducing their milk yield. Sadly, the Wonder Stuff's "Size of a Cow" was one of those tracks. Others included Supergrass' "Pumping on Your Stereo" and Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy."
Researchers played music 12 hours a day for cows in the nine-week study. It's unclear whether record retailers will try to milk the findings, and there's no word on whether playing Limp Bizkit for livestock increases the frequency of mad cow disease.

The British dance and jazz outfit Jamiroquai will keep things on the down low for New Year's Eve, as the band has apparently turned down a million-dollar gig in the U.S. in favor of staying at home.
Reuters reports that Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay plans to celebrate the New Year at his London home with fiancee Denise Van Outen, rather than play a lucrative American show.
It wasn't immediately known what offer Jamiroquai had nixed, although an article in the Monday edition of the "New York Post" suggested that the band was to perform on December 31 as part of PAX TV's "Millennium Live New Year's Eve" special.
Over the weekend, Jamiroquai played a charity concert at Shepherds Bush Empire in London to help the Big Issue Foundation raise money for the homeless.
For much more on Jamiroquai, don't forget to check out the MTV News Online feature "MTV News Presents: Jamiroquai".

Nostalgia was thick in the air for the opening afternoon of Woodstock '99 in Rome, New York on Friday, as artists both young and old took a look back at the history of the fabled music fest (as well as rock in general) during the first full day of performances.
Legendary Godfather of Soul James Brown, who by all rights should have played the inaugural edition of Woodstock back in 1969, made up for lost time by delivering a set of crowd favorites, including "Get Up Offa That Thing," "Mother Popcorn," and "Living in America."
But Brown surprised the early crowd with an absolute rave-up of "Purple Haze," a number in which his 20-piece band delved into the blues roots of Jimi Hendrix's psychedelic classic. Brown's crowd-warmer, singer Bobbie Ray, helped set the mood for Brown's set by belting out a pair of Janis Joplin tunes, "Mercedes Benz" and "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)."
Philadelphia's G. Love and Special Sauce admirably stepped in for Sugar Ray as a last-minute substitution
(see "Sugar Ray Off Woodstock As McGrath Takes Ill"), although it was hard to tell whether the audience's withered response had more to do with dashed expectations or the sweltering heat. Wielding his harmonica and slide guitar, G. Love broke out into an extended "Woodstock" scat before revisiting the spirit of the '60s with a faithful reading of Donovan's "Season of the Witch."
G. Love closed out his set, which featured numerous calls for the security to hose the crowd down with water to offset the rising temperatures, by incorporating an audience call and response as an intro for his indie hit, "Cold Beverage."

Reminding the audience of the group's Woodstock pedigree (having also played Woodstock II back in 1994), Live drew the majority of its live show from its "Throwing Copper" LP (also released in '94), including thunderously definitive versions of "I Alone" and "All Over You."
In a more somber moment, Live
dedicated "Lightning Crashes" to the memory of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and his sister-in-law Lauren Bessette before leaving the stage to the adulation of the crowd, which had easily swelled to close to a quarter of a million people by midday.
Sheryl Crow, another repeat performer from Woodstock '94 who knows a thing or two about delivering hits (and winning Grammys for them), capped off the afternoon with such crowd-pleasers as "If It Makes You Happy" and a revamped take on her signature tune, "All I Wanna Do."
But when you get to work with the likes of Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, then you probably know a thing or two about songwriting. Crow demonstrated the depth of her own songbook with sloppy, but head-bobbin', renditions of second-tier tunes such as "A Change" and "Am I Getting Through?"

ANAHEIM, California — Creed vocalist Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti will start working nights this week as they resume writing the follow-up to 1999's smash Human Clay.
Refreshed from taking the holidays off, the songwriting duo plans to buckle down four nights a week and pen an album that intensifies the larger-than-life feel of its predecessor.

"It's gonna be more extreme on all extremities — the harder stuff a little harder, the epic stuff a little more epic," Tremonti said Saturday.

Creed plan to spend the next few months writing before heading into the studio in July and hopefully releasing the disc in October or November. Tremonti said the band, which worked with longtime friend and producer John Kurzweg on both My Own Prison (1997) and Human Clay, has not picked a producer for the album.

The spiritual Florida rockers parted ways with bass player and founding member Brian Marshall in August and hired Brett Hestla as their touring bassist. Hestla will be working on an album with his group Virgos while Creed are recording their LP as a trio, but the bands are considering a joint fall tour after both albums hit stores. Hestla said he would play both sets.

Tremonti, Hestla and Creed drummer Scott Phillips attended last weekend's National Association of Music Merchants trade show in Anaheim, where Paul Reed Smith Guitars unveiled Tremonti's new signature model.

Tremonti said he had been working with PRS to design the guitar for about a year. "It's the baddest guitar on the planet. It's a technically perfect, thick, massive-sounding guitar. I think it's the best in the world today."
Creed, who cleaned up at several recent award ceremonies, are up for two Grammys next month. "With Arms Wide Open" is nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Rock Song, the latter of which would go to its songwriters, Tremonti and Stapp.

"A Grammy would be great — I'm just not gonna count on it," Tremonti said. "We've won a lot of awards this year, and I'm happy about 'em. If we don't win a Grammy, we don't win a Grammy. We've got a lot more albums ahead. But we're up for two of them, so we'll keep our fingers crossed."
