Paramore, Jack's Mannequin and Motion City Soundtrack won big, and Vampire Weekend, Santogold and All Time Low rocked hard Wednesday night at the mtvU Woodie Awards, the channel's celebration of college music, campus life and erection punnery. Fittingly, there was also beer pong.

More than 5.2 million votes were cast by college students nationwide to determine just who would take home awards like Woodie of the Year and the Good Woodie, and just about that many folks packed New York's Roseland Ballroom for the fifth annual show, held by MTV's 24-hour college network. The vibe was raucous (which would explain the beer pong), the winners grateful and the performances unpredictable.

First, those who got wood. Paramore knocked off acts like Lil Wayne, MGMT and Santogold to win the night's biggest award, Woodie of the Year. Motion City Soundtrack's "It Had to Be You" took home the Best Video Woodie, besting clips by Gnarls Barkley, Erykah Badu and Vampire Weekend. Chromeo won the Left Field Woodie, given to the most original artist. Minneapolis hip-hop duo Atmosphere won the Performing Woodie for best tour. And Jack's Mannequin frontman Andrew McMahon won the Good Woodie for his Dear Jack Foundation, which raises money and awareness for cancer research.

Onstage, there were surprise collaborations aplenty. Up-and-coming MC Asher Roth kicked the show off with a performance of his song "I Love College," and was joined onstage by the Cool Kids for a version of "Delivery Man" that culminated in all three passing ice-cream sandwiches out to the crowd.

Swedish pop-tart Lykke Li brought legendary lyricist Q-Tip onstage for a version of A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?" and a medley of Tip's own songs, including "Vivrant Thing." Santogold did a version of "L.E.S. Artistes," and then was joined by Spank Rock for a dirrrty take on "Shove It." Vampire Weekend teamed up with electro duo Chromeo for versions of "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance" and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa." Oh, and All Time Low performed all by their lonesome, though the boozy sentiments of "Poppin' Champagne" were not lost on the Woodies crowd.

Presenters included Mark Hoppus, the All-American Rejects, Boys Like Girls, Kid Sister and Moby. Kanye's touring DJ, A-Trak, provided the backing beats throughout the night.

The 2008 mtvU Woodie Awards will premiere in full on mtvU, mtvU.com and the HD channel Palladia on November 19 at 8 p.m. ET. All Time Low will also host a half-hour "Best of the mtvU Woodie Awards" special — filmed at the Woodie afterparty — that will air November 21 at 7 p.m. ET on MTV2 and November 22 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

The full list of winners for the 2008 mtvU Woodie Awards:

With four huge, high-profile releases hitting record stores last week, Metallica's run at #1 was expected to expire Wednesday morning (October 8), when Nielsen SoundScan released the latest album sales figures, gleaned from retailers all across the nation. And as predicted, rapper T.I.'s Paper Trail has, indeed, dethroned the heavy metal icons' Death Magnetic to take control of next week's Billboard top 200. With sales registered at 568,000 and change, Paper Trail also marks the best first week of any of the rapper's releases.

While Paper Trail becomes T.I.'s third-straight LP to open at #1, he managed to shatter his own sales record, eclipsing those generated by 2006's King, which opened on top with nearly 522,000 sold, and 2007's T.I. vs. T.I.P., which entered the chart at #1 with about 468,000 scans. T.I. managed to outsell Oscar-winning "American Idol" alum Jennifer Hudson's self-titled debut, which bows at #2 with 217,000 sold, and the latest from Robin Thicke, Something Else. That album follows at #3, having sold 137,000 units. James Taylor's Covers is also new to next week's chart, debuting at #4 with 95,000 sold.

That means Metallica's Death Magnetic slides to #5 on next week's chart, with week-four sales reported at 86,000. The good news for Metallica is that that figure pushes total sales of the disc past the 1 million mark, making the album one of the year's best-selling rock sets. Ne-Yo's Year of the Gentleman follows at #6 with 70,000 scans, while Kid Rock's Rock N Roll Jesus holds at #7, selling another 56,000 units. Jazmine Sullivan's Fearless lands at #10 with 42,000 sold.

T.I.'s latest was one of six new releases to enter the chart in the top 10 and one of 33 total newcomers to impact next week's chart. Jack's Mannequin's Glass Passenger will debut at #8 with 49,000 sold, while "American Idol" alumni Kellie Pickler's self-titled latest enters at #9, selling 43,000.

T.I. has another release debuting on next week's chart, but this one opens at #125 with just 5,000 sold. Called A King of Oneself, the six-song EP was sold exclusively to Best Buy customers who bought a copy of Paper Trail.

Ben Folds' Way to Normal just misses the top 10, coming in at #11 next week with 40,000 scans, while Anberlin's New Surrender follows at #13 with week-one sales of 36,000. Nightmare Revisited, a compilation featuring the likes of Marilyn Manson, Flyleaf, Korn, Rise Against and others covering the tunes from Disney's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," enters the chart at #31, having sold 19,000 copies, while Murs' Murs for President opens at #43 with 12,000 sold.

It was a big week for metal releases. Trivium's Shogun will bow at #23 with 24,000 sold, while Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God enters at #48 with 11,400 sold. In This Moment's The Dream scanned 8,200 copies to open at #70, while Bleeding Through's Declaration follows at #101 with 5,800 sold.

Elsewhere on the chart, we find James Morrison's Songs for You, Truths for Me entering at #47 with more than 11,400 sold, while Faith Hill's Joy to the World follows at #49 with 11,300 scans. The soundtrack to "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" debuts at #50, having sold 11,100 units, while Bayside's Shudder claims the #52 spot, selling just under 11,100. Ani DiFranco's Red Letter Year trails at #53 with 10,600 sold, while Tina Turner's Tina! bows at #59 with 9,700 scans.

Enigma return to the top 200 at #89, with Seven Lives Many Faces selling 6,400, while Big Kuntry King's My Turn to Eat enters at #95 with 6,000 sold. Dem Franchize Boyz' Our World, Our Way opens at #115 with 5,200 sold, and at #119, with 5,200 sold, it's Heltah Skeltah's D.I.R.T. The sophomore offering from Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello's side project, the Nightwatchman, called Fabled City, debuts at #179, having sold 3,600 units.

'Twilight' Author Stephenie Meyer Tries To Drown Jack's Mannequin In 'Resolution' Video

MALIBU, California — "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer has a love/hate relationship with the sun as she makes her way around the set of the new video for Jack's Mannequin. It could be part of her thing for vampires. On the other hand, it's more likely her propensity to burn that has the writer ducking into a car, then under a tent, finally seeking shelter under a parasol someone else holds up for her, as if she were royalty.

But right now, Meyer desperately needs the sun — no matter how blazing — because she has only this one day to direct the clip for "The Resolution," the first single from Mannequin's upcoming album The Glass Passenger. And after 14 hours of shooting, she's losing the light. "The schedule is pretty tight now," she said.

Three set pieces are required for the video — the ocean, the desert and a mountaintop — so this spot in Malibu, just off Pacific Coast Highway on a road you might never notice otherwise, is ideal. Below the hill is the beach. Up the hill is a flat, sandy sagebrush-strewn area, which an assistant is sweeping to make it look like it hasn't been driven on by the nearby flatbed truck carrying a piano. And then at the top of the hill is a breathtaking view of the coast.

"It's all about what could you get to realistically in one day," Meyer said of the location, "so you have the sense of traveling without really traveling. That was the tricky part."

Meyer came up with the concept for the video after ruminating on the lyrics: "I can hear the sound of your voice still ringing in my ear/ I'm going underground but you find me anywhere I fear." So, as singer/songwriter Andrew McMahon performs "The Resolution," he's lured into the ocean by the siren song of a mermaid with fire-red hair who wants him to be hers. He tries to resist, but he ends up ditching the piano for "a dip in the Pacific in all my clothes," McMahon laughed.

"It's sort of a fable," Meyer said. "This mermaid doesn't take no for an answer. The more he tries to get away from her, the greater lengths she goes to be able to reach him, and so that ends up meaning a lot of water climbing things. He's running from the water. Even if he climbs a mountain, it still comes after him."

"Essentially, the tide is rising and keeps following us," McMahon said.

"To me, it references a relationship that was not healthy for one person, [but] that didn't matter to the other person," Meyer said. "They still wanted what they wanted, and I thought this was an interesting way of interpreting that. It's really just normal relationship angst, and adding the supernatural element is just a way of making it a little more visual. Because, really, a couple not getting along is not as visual as an ocean stalking a person."

After Meyer came up with the concept, she met up with a couple of friends to revisit music videos she loved, "just to get a sense of the style." The viewing party included OK Go's "Here It Goes Again" (the treadmill dance is "just quirky excellence," she said), Brand New's "Sic Transit Gloria ... Glory Fades" and My Chemical Romance's "Helena" (Meyer's "personal favorite of all time, because it's the first time interpretative dance really meant something"). The work of prolific video director Marc Webb features prominently in that mix, but Meyer doesn't even begin to dream of being a director on his level.

"I don't know much about directing," she admitted. "It's a total fluke. I'm just doing it because it's fun and an experience I never had, and I didn't want to turn it down. I certainly wouldn't say I'm going to be a music director now! I don't even know how to work the camera, and they won't let me. They don't want me to break things. I think 'creative consultant' is a much better word [for what I'm doing]. I'm just making sure the vision looks right."

So don't expect future music videos — even if she were to win a VMA down the road for this one. "I haven't even thought about any of that!" Meyer said. "I would love to see it do well for Jack's Mannequin. Anything good for them, I would love to see."

But all she wants for herself is a chance to avoid the spotlight, even more than the California sun, if only for a little while. After months spent doing publicity for the "Twilight" movie and her latest book, "Breaking Dawn," and in the aftermath of the leaked manuscript of the "Twilight" companion piece "Midnight Sun," Meyer needs a break.

"I would like to spend some time being a hermit," she said. "I look forward to doing that."

To the casual observer, a team-up between Stephenie Meyer, author of the best-selling "Twilight" book series, and Andrew McMahon, the singer/songwriter known as Jack's Mannequin, doesn't seem to make much sense. But luckily, fans of both tend to be anything but casual.

So, in some way, the following news shouldn't come as a shock to those who worship at the altar of Edward Cullen or the Mannequin: Meyer has been tapped to direct the video for "The Resolution," the first single from JM's upcoming album The Glass Passenger (due September 30). Production is set to get under way next week in Los Angeles and is based on a treatment Meyer wrote. And while details on the project are difficult to come by, McMahon himself told MTV News that fans can be on the lookout for "a good amount of water," some fictional aquatic creatures but — sadly — a grand total of zero vampires.

"Yeah, there are no vampires in the treatment. There may be a mermaid, but I'm not sure. I don't want to give away too much, because we're letting [Meyer] run with her vision. ... I mean, I will say there's a good amount of water in the video and ... what else can I say?" he said Thursday (August 28). "It's cool. It's not some sort of exposé on my life. ... It's nice to know we're going to make a video for the sake of making a video. [We're] making something that's kind of fantastic and different and exciting but isn't about the song specifically, and it isn't about me specifically."

Of course, as any "Twilight" fan will tell you, Meyer is an avid music fan — she posts playlists on her Web site that are meant to be sorta-scores to each of her books — and she's long been a proponent of McMahon's work. So the collaboration seems like even more of a no-brainer — to everyone except for McMahon, that is. Seems he's still relatively new to the whole "Twilight" phenomenon.

"I'm quickly becoming super-aware of how big of a deal it is. I'm partway into 'Twilight' now. ... I found out about Stephenie through a close friend, who told me, 'I don't know if you know this, but you're referenced in a couple of places on Stephenie's Web site as being a musical inspiration for what she does,' and I was obviously incredibly flattered, especially considering the finger she has on a lot of pop culture," he said. "So we were getting to this place where we were getting video treatments, and we had seen a lot of good things, but nothing that was really jumping out at us. And I was talking to someone at the label, and I said, 'You know, let's try to do something different. Let's approach this video in a completely different way, like, rather than going out to a bunch of video directors and trying to do business as usual, let's try and come up with something clever.' And immediately, Stephenie Meyer came to my head.

"So I said, 'Can I reach out to her and see if she'd be interested in writing for the video and coming out and directing it?' And we got her music, and she was fantastic, and we've been working with her ever since," he continued. "And it works so well, because [with my music], I always try to create something super-visual and create a backdrop where people can take a bunch of experiences but relate them. And she's done that in a huge way with her books."

But now that he's indoctrinated in the ways of "Twilight," is McMahon bummed out that the video for "Resolution" isn't going to feature a single bloodsucker? Not at all. In fact, he's just happy that Meyer is onboard for the project. After all, she is rather busy these days.

"She seems genuinely enthusiastic about it. She's in the middle of editing her film right now, so I guess the implication is that she's excited because she's taking time away from her baby to make it," McMahon laughed. "But, like I said, I'm most excited because, when I was making this album, I wanted to find someone who was really talented and get them to write a treatment and just leave it alone and let it fly. And that's exactly what we're doing here."

Anyone who watches "American Idol" knows the show has a long list of celebrity fans.

Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, Rebecca Romijn, Rachel Bilson and Tori Spelling are among the famous faces caught by cameras at recent tapings. Even more, though, watch the show like the rest of us on their living room couches with the TiVo remote on near-constant pause to allow for maximum commentary.

Well, we couldn't score an invite to any of those viewing sessions, but we did track down a few celebs who were willing to share their pick for who's going to win this thing. And it appears there's no clear front-runner.

Jessica Alba
"Katharine is gorgeous and has a great range. She looks like an 'American Idol.' My parents like Taylor. There's a lot of popular musicians or singers that couldn't do a quarter of what those singers do on 'American Idol.' ... I'll make dinner and have my parents and some friends over and we'll watch the show. If my family had a favorite 'American Idol,' Katharine definitely is the most appropriate. I think she can sell records and she has a beautiful voice, beautiful range, and she's a beautiful girl."

Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy bassist)
"I did watch it in the past, but now I pretty much just watch 'American Inventor.' I watched the guy with the shaved head [Chris Daughtry] get kicked off, and I was like, 'Well, now the guy who looks like George Clooney is probably going to be the guy who wins.' Everyone tells me that he's the top runner, which just boggles my mind."

Green Day
Singer Billie Joe Armstrong: "I don't know, but I had an idea. I think how America votes on 'American Idol,' the next presidential election they should vote in the same way and have a massive TV show that's once a week that keeps you updated. ... The new way of voting. Screw singers. Let's go for the politicians this time."
Drummer Tre Cool: "That's a good idea, Billie. And for 50 cents a pop, all those calls could pay for all the campaigning."

Superman as an emo-punk hero? Well, he's already got the black hair and the chunky belt (though it's not studded and he might want to change it from yellow to white), and his Spandex pants could pass for girl jeans, but the whole concept is a bit of a stretch.

That hasn't stopped Warner Bros. — which will unleash "Superman Returns" June 30 — from greenlighting two separate records based on the Man of Steel: an official movie score by composer John Ottman and Sound of Superman, an album featuring contributions from a host of Warped Tour faves.

Jack's Mannequin, the Academy Is ... and the Receiving End of Sirens are among the artists contributing songs to the album, which, in keeping with the spirit of most "inspired by" soundtracks, features a mix of new tunes and covers. Jack's Mannequin donate a new song, the piano-driven "Meet Me at My Window"; while TAI and the Receiving End went the covers route (both do versions of songs called "Superman," by '60s garage rockers the Clique and Stereophonics, respectively).

And while there is no official track list for Sound of Superman, Rhino Records (which is releasing both movie albums) confirmed that other acts on the album include the Sun, Nightmare of You, American Hi-Fi and Plain White T's. It's due in stores May 23, while Ottman's score will hit shelves June 27.
