While "Curious George" failed to drum up enough ticket sales over the weekend for a first-place finish at the box office, the film's soundtrack, Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies for the Film "Curious George," made a big impression at the nation's record stores — scoring mellow surfer-turned-singer Jack Johnson his first-ever Billboard-topping debut.

Johnson — who composed original material for the animated movie — has come close to the top of the albums chart before, but he's never had the chance to light that proverbial cigar. His 2003 outing, On and On, opened at #3 with sales of more than 132,000. And nearly a year ago, In Between Dreams sold 229,000 its first week out for another #3 debut.

According to the latest SoundScan figures, Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies for the Film "Curious George" achieved week-one scans of close to 163,000 to claim the coveted Billboard title. Johnson had a little help from friends Ben Harper, Matt Costa and G. Love, who contributed to the disc.

Holding strong to the #2 spot is Mary J. Blige's The Breakthrough, which finished out the week with 152,000 copies sold, a 24 percent sales boost. Last week's #1, Barry Manilow's The Greatest Songs of the Fifties, slides two spots to #3 after selling close to 142,000 units during its second week in stores. Tuscan tenor Andrea Bocelli's Amore drops one chart position to #4 with nearly 117,000 week-two sales.

Johnson's "Curious" collection wasn't the top five's sole newcomer. Dem Franchize Boyz's On Top of Our Game makes the cut, bowing at #5 with close to 106,000 copies sold. Il Divo's Ancora follows at #6 with 96,000 sales, while Eminem's Curtain Call: The Hits checks in at #9 after moving 82,000 discs. Jamie Foxx's Unpredictable drops six spots to #10, selling just over 81,000 copies.

This week's chart is chock full of debuts that held their own during a strong week for overall record sales. Comedian Ron White's latest, You Can't Fix Stupid, claims the #14 spot with 64,000 copies sold, while Remy Ma's There's Something About Remy pops up at #33 with 37,000 sales. K.T. Tunstall's Eye to the Telescope finishes at #47 with nearly 28,000 scans, and the "One Tree Hill" Volume Two: Friends With Benefit soundtrack — which features Audioslave, Fall Out Boy, Hot Hot Heat and more — takes #54 after moving 25,000 units. In Flames' Come Clarity opens at #58 with sales of 24,000, and Belle and Sebastian's The Life Pursuit comes in at #65 with 20,000 plus copies sold. Beth Orton's Comfort of Strangers finishes at #93 with 13,000 sales, and Collective Soul's Home ends up at #183 with close to 7,000 scans.

Many of this year's Grammy winners, nominees and performers prolonged the excitement of last week's event with the big sales week that followed in its afterglow. Sales of John Legend's Get Lifted shot up a whopping 780 percent for the Best New Artist, Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance winner (who also performed with Stevie Wonder before Super Bowl XL). Get Lifted leaps from #187 to #18 with 52,000 copies sold. Mariah Carey, who took home three awards, including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, watches her The Emancipation of Mimi climb seven to #7 thanks to a 70 percent sales boost that translated to 90,000 plus copies sold. Breakaway, the latest from Kelly Clarkson — who won two Grammys, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance — finishes at #8 after jumping 16 positions and 109 percent with 83,000 copies sold.

The compilation album showcasing this year's Grammy nominees climbs 17 spots to #15 thanks to a 114 percent spike in sales. And while Fall Out Boy didn't win a Grammy, their From Under the Cork Tree does win big on Billboard's chart, scoring a #28 finish with sales of 42,000 and change (a 27 percent upswing). Late Registration by Kanye West, the recipient of Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance Grammys, experienced a 92 percent swell to score the #30 spot with 39,000 copies sold. Gorillaz's Demon Days, which contains the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals-winning track "Feel Good Inc.," climbs 15 spots to claim the #34 slot after an 80 percent sales boost.

Meanwhile, Gwen Stefani's multi-nominated debut, Love, Angel, Music, Baby, finished the week with a 65 percent retail rise, amounting to over 28,000 copies sold, to grab #45. Sales of U2's Album of the Year winner How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb shot up 512 percent, putting the LP back in the top 200 at #49, following the previous week's chart no-show. Green Day's American Idiot, which features Record of the Year winner "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," follows at #50, with sales up 55 percent to 27,000. And Coldplay's X&Y didn't score a Grammy, but sales of the disc surged 67 percent to nearly 27,000, earning the disc a spot at #52.

Barry Manilow sings about writing songs that make the whole world sing — the songs, he's claimed, that make the young girls cry. But this week, R&B diva Mary J. Blige might be the only one sobbing — thanks to a collection of songs that Barry didn't write.

It was a close race to Billboard's winners' circle, but in the end, The Greatest Songs of the Fifties — a collection of hits from the golden years produced by none other than Clive Davis — bests Blige's The Breakthrough by a formidable nose.

According to the latest SoundScan totals, sales of Manilow's album — which were helped along by the pop icon's appearance last week on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" — came in at just under 156,000, to secure The Greatest Songs of the Fifties the top spot on the albums chart. Despite a 25 percent hike in retail mobility, Blige's The Breakthrough couldn't keep up and finished at #2 with 123,000 scans.

The next closest threat to Manilow's reign came from Tuscan-born tenor Andrea Bocelli and his Amore, which opens at #3 with week-one sales of 113,000. One of the top five's most recent and stable leaders, Jamie Foxx's Unpredictable, continues to slide. The disc, which finished third last week, checks in at #4 with a 95,000-plus performance. In My Mind, the latest studio LP from R&B songbird Heather Headley, follows at #5 with debut-week sales of just over 95,000. Headley's LP features contributions from Lil Jon, Shaggy, Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Simon Cowell-conceived pop act Il Divo's Ancora tumbles from #1 to #6, thanks to a 40 percent drop in retail interest. In its second week in stores, the disc sold more than 93,000 copies. Eminem's Curtain Call: The Hits climbs one spot to #7 with 78,000 units sold, while "American Idol" champ Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts claims the sales chart's #8 opening with 74,000 sales — just enough to push total sales of her debut past the 2-million mark. James Blunt's Back to Bedlam returns to the top 10 at #9, following last week's stint at #11. A 47 percent sales surge helped the Brit rocker move more than 71,000 units during the album's 18th week at retail.

Train return to the Billboard albums chart this week with For Me It's You, the band's fifth full-length effort. With first-week sales of 62,000 and then some, the band is sitting comfortably at the #10 spot. But Train weren't the chart's sole rock newcomer: Monster Ballads: Platinum Edition, a collection of hair-metal tearjerkers, debuts at #18 with 44,000 copies sold. The compilation features Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," Warrant's "Heaven," Extreme's "More Than Words," and Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)," among others. And the self-titled debut from brood-rockers She Wants Revenge opens at #38 with sales nearing 26,000.

Several Grammy nominees enjoyed a sales boost in the week leading up to the big night. Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi finished at #14 with 53,000 copies sold — a sales jump of 37 percent. Sales of the Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business swelled 21 percent, giving the group the chart's #17 slot and another 46,000 scans. Demon Days from the Gorillaz ends the week at #49 with 20,000 in sales (a 19 percent spike) and John Legend's Get Lifted returns to the top 200 at #187 following a 40 percent sales leap.

For more than a month, only two names have appeared at the top of Billboard's weekly albums sales chart: Jamie Foxx and Mary J. Blige. It was merely a matter of time before an LP emerged to challenge Foxx and Blige's back-and-forth handoff of the chart's #1 spot — but who would've guessed it'd be from Il Divo?

The Simon Cowell-concocted, Oprah Winfrey-endorsed classical crossover quartet's third album in less than a year, Ancora, put an end to the reigning champs' battle, debuting at #1 with sales of more than 156,000, according to the latest SoundScan figures. Il Divo's triumph must taste even sweeter considering Ancora's sales outshined the opening-week totals generated by the group's self-titled debut, which reached #4 with 147,000 scans in April — and is in at #74 on the latest chart, climbing 66 spots thanks to a 111 percent sales boost.

But Il Divo weren't the only act that rained on Foxx and Blige's parade. Your Man, the latest from country star Josh Turner, also sucked some of the wind from their sails, taking the chart's #2 spot with a first-week total of nearly 102,000. Foxx's Unpredictable — last week's #1 — slips to third place with close to 100,000 copies sold. Blige's The Breakthrough scores #4 after selling 98,000 plus.

For the first time this year, Billboard's top 200 welcomes a fresh batch of chart newcomers. In addition to new LPs from Il Divo and Turner, Yellowcard's Lights and Sounds opens in the top 10, capturing #5 with more than 90,000 scans. Sales of the band's 1.7 million-selling 2003 release Ocean Avenue were clocked at 11,000 plus, earning the band an additional spot at #99. In at #6 is the latest entrant in the Now That's What I Call Music! compilation franchise. Now #1's — which features tracks from Gwen Stefani, Nelly, Britney Spears, Nickelback and Ashlee Simpson — sold nearly 90,000 copies. Testify, the latest from rockers P.O.D., opens at #9 with more than 58,000 scans. The band's 2003 release, Payable on Death, also took #9 (with 106,000 copies sold) when it opened, while 2001's Satellite debuted at #5 with 133,000 copies sold.

Carrie Underwood and Eminem stay in the top 10 despite the influx of debuts. Underwood's Some Hearts falls three spots to #7 with 74,000 copies sold, and Em's Curtain Call: The Hits follows at #8, racking up 73,000 in sales. One of the chart's fastest climbers rounds out the top 10: the soundtrack to the Disney Channel original movie "High School Musical." In just three weeks, the album has jumped from #143 to #58, and now reaches #10. Sales of the disc, which features a track from B5, were reported at nearly 53,000, an increase of 232 percent. James Blunt's Back to Bedlam continues to pick up its sales pace, surging 19 percent this week for an #11 finish. The disc, which spent last week at #9, sold close to 49,000.

There were several other notable debuts this week that didn't crack the top 10. The Grammy Nominees 2006 collection — featuring contributions from Mariah Carey, Green Day, Gorillaz, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, U2, Coldplay and Beck — opened at #14 with 43,000 copies sold. Cat Power's latest, The Greatest, checks in at #34 with 23,000 copies sold, while Marty Casey & Lovehammers, the self-titled second LP from the "Rock Star: INXS" runner-up and his band, claims the #67 slot with more than 14,000 copies sold. Rosanne Cash's Black Cadillac finishes at #84 with 12,000 sales, and Rabbit Fur Coat from Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins follows at #88 with more than 10,000 scans.

For the first time in more than 10 years, Chris Cornell can lay claim to the country's best-selling record.

Out of Exile, the second studio offering from the Cornell-fronted Audioslave, will debut atop Billboard's albums chart with first-week sales of more than 263,000, scoring the band — which also features the instrument-playing components of the late Rage Against the Machine — its first #1, according to the latest SoundScan figures.

Audioslave's newest opus continues a recent retail trend of rock domination. Out of Exile becomes the sixth straight rock record to debut as Billboard's king of scans. The previous week, the Dave Matthews Band conceded the sales throne to metal act System of a Down's Mezmerize. With close to 170,000 scans (and a second-week sales decline of 63 percent), the last champ falls three spots to #4 on this most recent sales chart. The week before that, Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails passed the proverbial torch to Stand Up, DMB's newest LP, which will show up at #7 with sales of just over 100,000 this time around.

Three weeks ago, it was the Nails' With Teeth — now finishing out its fourth week at retail with scans of 41,000 and then some, to take the chart's #26 position — giving Bruce Springsteen's Devils & Dust the bump. The latest release from the Boss checks in at #39 on the most recent chart, with a fifth-week sales showing of close to 26,500. But rock's retail run all started back in mid-April with Something to Be, the solo debut from Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas — which continues to garner strong retail interest, with week-six sales of 46,000 and change, earning Thomas the chart's #23 rank.

Who says rock and roll is dead?

But for Audioslave, Out of Exile is a triumph on so many different levels. The album not only outperformed the band's debut — which opened at Billboard's #7, with first-week sales of just over 162,000 back in 2002 — it marks the first time since the 1994 release of Superunknown, the hit record from Cornell's former group Soundgarden, that the celebrated grunge vocalist finds himself on top. And for the rest of his band, Out of Exile becomes the third #1 debut of their musical careers: Rage Against the Machine's Evil Empire finished first with sales of close to 250,000 in 1996, while 1999's Battle of Los Angeles netted first-week sales of over 430,000, to take that week's #1.

Rapper Common's latest, Be, earns the week's second-best debut showing, coming in at #2 with sales of close to 185,000. Holding to the chart's #3 spot for yet another week is Mariah Carey's comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi, which netted week-seven scans of nearly 180,000.

The previous #2 falls three spots to #5: Country star Toby Keith's Honkytonk University suffered a 55 percent dip in sales, closing out its second week of retail availability with sales of 128,000 plus. Demon Days, the second full-length from virtual hip-hop group Gorillaz, will debut at #6 on the chart, with scans of 107,000, while alterna-metal act Seether turned out the band's strongest debut showing with their latest, Karma and Effect, which scored sales of nearly 82,000.

"American Idol" arbitrator Simon Cowell's boy-band discovery Il Divo jumps from the chart's #21 spot to its #9 position, thanks to an 80 percent sales increase that resulted in sixth-week sales of more than 79,000. The sales surge comes during the same week in which the group serenaded the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominees at the Daytime Emmy Awards. Finishing at #10 is Gwen Stefani's solo debut Love, Angel, Music, Baby, which scores scans of more than 76,000 after spending 27 weeks on the chart.

For the first time since the release of The Massacre 13 weeks ago, rapper 50 Cent finds himself outside the chart's top 10. Fiddy takes #11 with sales of 75,000 plus, followed by country trio Rascal Flatts and their latest, Feels Like Today. A 42 percent sales increase on the heels of the band's appearance during last week's "American Idol" performance resulted in sales of just over 65,000, which was enough to score the band a #12 finish. Debuting at #13, the latest from R&B heartthrob Marques Houston, Naked; the album sold more than 64,500 copies.

"Idol" alum Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway holds to the top 15 at #14, with sales of nearly 62,000 — not bad for a disc that's been out for 26 weeks. And rounding out the top 15 with debut-week sales of 59,000 plus, the latest from Philadelphia rappers Young Gunz, Brothers From Another. But the Young Gunz were just one of several acts to debut high on the chart: Pretty Ricky's Blue Stars takes #16; B.G.'s Heart of Tha Streetz finishes at #21; Alkaline Trio's Crimson checks in at #25; and the latest disc from the Wallflowers, Rebel Sweetheart, comes in at #40.

Hitting Bottom

After just four weeks of release, Limp Bizkit's The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1) has gone from bad to worse to it's over, Johnny. The record is dangerously close to falling off of the chart completely, diving 84 positions from #111 to #195. The album debuted at #24 before falling to #82 and then #111. Bizkit's record sustained a 43 percent decline in retail interest over the last week, spawning sales of just over 5,000 — bringing the album's four-week grand total to just over 63,000 (see "Limp Bizkit: What Happened?").

Scoring the week's biggest plummet is the Insane Clown Posse's The Calm, which tumbled 120 chart positions from #32 to #142. A 76 percent sales slip led to just over 7,200 scans. It was a sad week for the rap-rock world.

As Seen On TV

Gavin DeGraw's latest release climbs five chart positions to #92 on the heels of last week's appearance on "Live With Regis and Kelly." Chariot Stripped sold more than 11,000 copies, a 23 percent surge in sales. Likewise, Jimmy Eat World's Futures reappears in the top 200, taking #168 with sales of just over 6,000. Small potatoes, you say? Well, since the band only sold 3,000 plus copies of the disc the week before, sales of the album rose 87 percent. The Arizona emo specialists might want to thank their appearance last week on the WB's "One Tree Hill" finale for the boost.

More Movement

Simple Plan's Still Not Getting Any experienced a 15 percent sales increase on the strength of the hard-hitting — and much-requested — video for their single "Untitled," which examines the tragic results of driving drunk.

Both of Gap girl Joss Stone's albums continue to do well. Appearing in the clothing chain's television ads seems to be having a positive effect on the singer's LP sales. Mind, Body and Soul jumped 23 chart positions to #37, thanks to moving nearly 27,000 copies, a 38 percent spike. Meanwhile, her Soul Sessions jumped up in retail interest a whopping 45 percent, earning her the chart's #170.

One To Watch

Like lions in the wild stalking a herd of gazelles from afar and stealthily inching closer before striking, bands that have slowly climbed their way up, moving a few positions at a time here and there, are all over the chart. Flying under the radar, these bands — like My Chemical Romance before them — are ones to keep a watchful eye on, as they're likely to keep moving on up.

Take Hawthorne Heights, for instance. The band checks in this week at #96, climbing 13 chart positions thanks to a 21 percent sales increase. The band's Silence in Black and White sold nearly 11,000 copies, helping it penetrate the top 100 for the first time.

Rob Thomas has a funny way of showing his desire to be "Lonely No More." He's taking a break from longtime band Matchbox Twenty and setting out on his own with the release of his debut solo album, Something to Be.

Thomas is no stranger to side projects, having worked with Carlos Santana on the song "Smooth" for 1999's Supernatural, but this is the first full album the singer has released on his own since Matchbox Twenty dropped its first project in 1996.

While Thomas should have no problem making a solo name for himself, Houston-bred rapper Mike Jones is taking huge leaps to make sure you remember his. Jones titled his album Who Is Mike Jones? and has made his phone number public knowledge to ensure listeners will be able to answer that question on their own. The album drops on the heels of the single "Still Tippin'."

Ringside, the duo of clothing-designer-turned-musician Scott Thomas and Balthazar Getty, drop their self-titled debut album this week on Fred Durst's Flawless Records imprint.

The somewhat less organically formed Il Divo, a quartet born from "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell's worldwide search, release their self-titled debut featuring covers of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" and Frank Sinatra's "My Way," sung in an assortment of languages including English, French and Spanish.

Buzzed-about singer/songwriter Anna Nalick releases her debut, Wreck of the Day, while Hasidic rapper Matisyahu drops Live at Stubb's — Austin, TX 2/19/05.

Also out this week are albums by Danko Jones (We Sweat Blood), Autechre (Untilted), Adam Richman (Patience and Science), Steel Train (Twilight Tales From the Prairies of the Sun) and Second Sun (Inside Out).
