On Thursday morning (October 22), Lil Wayne pleaded guilty on a felony gun-possession charge and is expected to be sentenced to a year in prison (although a shorter term of eight-to-10 months on good behavior appears likely). Several hip-hop artists MTV News spoke with in the hours after the news broke were extremely saddened by the development.

"Lil Wayne is a great friend of mine," said DJ Khaled, who had just heard the news. "He's a brother and he's helped so many people. He's helped so many people, the public, [his] city. Musically, he's helped other artists. He's just a great person on the whole.

"He's gonna be good no matter [what], 'cause Lil Wayne's so blessed, but the news has got me disturbed. When you do so much good for the world, make music to inspire young kids and give back to the community, to put a man away like that for eight months to a year ..." Khaled trailed off before continuing. "Lil Wayne is great person. It's just wack that people have to go through these trials and tribulations."

"It hurt us," Rick Ross said. The Bawse had just gotten off a plane to Los Angeles on Thursday morning when he heard about Wayne's plea. "We strategize and work towards this for so long, [and] when something like that, a major inconvenience such as that, nine people out of 10, that stint could hurt them. But I think Wayne has a unique situation with his Cash Money family and now his Young Money roster, I know they got a lot of things poppin'. Wayne's got enough music. He's one of the few artists I feel could eat those 10 months up, or that year, and then come home to rap royalty. If anybody is gonna be able to do it, it's gonna be Wayne."

While Ross was optimistic, Juelz Santana was irate.

"I'm pissed off," Santana said on Thursday morning. Coincidentally, he was in Wayne's hometown of New Orleans filming his first movie, "Video Girl," with Meagan Good. "They totally violated my man. I been trying to call my man all morning. I'm offended! I'm offended, for one, that it happened in New York City. That was some bullsh--. I don't know the situation as far as what happened on the bus, but at the end of the day, Weezy shouldn't be going to jail for nothing right now."

Santana said he feels that Wayne was unfairly targeted by police, like many of his peers.

"Even as rappers, we out here on defense," he added. "We ain't out here hurting nobody. We go to shows picking up 50, 60, probably hundreds of thousands of dollars. Cash money! At the end of the day, you on the bus with however many people was there, how do the officers assume that it's Lil Wayne's gun?

DJ Drama, who made the classic Dedication series of mixtapes with Wayne, also feels that rappers like Weezy are targeted unfairly.

"I was shocked," Drama said of the news about his collaborator. "It was ironic because when I got the e-mail, I was taking a break from shooting a CNN special [about] black men in America since President Obama's [election]. Then here we are halfway through [shooting] that, and I get a e-mail about Lil Wayne possibly facing jail time. One of the world's most popular music stars? It's crazy. Not to take anything from the actual charge or the conflicts of guns, [but] we all can bear witness to the racist tactics of the hip-hop police, specifically in New York. I remember numerous occasions, doing my promo [during] my album's run. They were outside the venues just clearly looking for situations. I can imagine on that night or any given night with the most heralded stars — the 50 Cents, the Lil Waynes — the aggressive nature, they came down on those guys. The system is not even fair to that extent.

"People can say 'Don't do the crime, do the time' or 'Don't carry weapons,' yadda, yadda, yadda," he continued. "These cops are coming so strategically at these artists to make these headlines, to make these statements ... it's plain and simple wrong. So much time and effort is put into putting our music stars behind bars, they still ain't find out who killed Tupac and Biggie."

Even with Wayne having to go away, these artists — like many fans — feel that the time outside of music will have little ill effect on his career.

"Wayne is gonna be all right because God is with him," Khaled insisted. "Us as hip-hop fans, we gotta support him when times are hard, too. I tell everybody you can't turn your back on somebody. I'm gonna ride with Wayne forever. I'm gonna play his music whether it's in the club, the radio or in my car. [It's] gonna be like he's got an album coming out every week."

"It most definitely could have been a lot worse," Ross added. "But Lil Wayne and his camp, his music is gonna remain visible and relevant. He's gonna handle his business and come home like a boss. Believe that.

"This is finnin' to take him to a whole 'nother creative point," Ross continued. "To have time to sit down ... I can imagine how many records and choruses he's gonna write. Knowing Wayne, he's gonna release a mixtape from behind bars. He'll be right back with a new energy and he'll have the streets excited. People are going to want to hear what he has to say and speak his experience and speak to the youth."

Juelz Santana at Def Jam's 25th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday

NEW YORK — Bigger than an individual, bigger than a group and overshadowing any crew, Def Jam Records celebrated its 25th anniversary Saturday night at the M2 Ultra Lounge.

The historic label's acts such as Juelz Santana, NeYo, Fabolous and singer Adrienne Bailon, as well as celebs such as Claudia Jordan, Zab Judah, Melody Thornton, Malinda Williams, Polow Da Don, Eva Pigford, Ice-T and wife Coco came out for the party.

DJ Cassidy started off the night spinning nothing but the hits from Def Jam's catalog: Onyx's "Slam," LL Cool J's "Jingling Baby," DMX's "Get at Me Dog," Jay-Z's "Can I Get A ..." and others. If you didn't already appreciate Def Jam for its trailblazing history and unprecedented longevity, you had to respect its consistent output of hits and stars.

Ice-T seemed especially to love Cassidy's brief EPMD set, standing at his VIP table while Coco and his daughter, Letesha, danced.

The night's nostalgia could be heard in the music and the conversation, as some debated over which rapper was the best at their peak, Jay-Z or LL Cool J, and over which EPMD album was the best. As the night progressed, the dancing got heavier and Cassidy began spinning records outside of the Def Jam umbrella, such as Diddy's "All About the Benjamins" and Jay-Z's "D.O.A (Death of Auto-Tune)" and "Run This Town" (Jay's post-Def Jam releases).

As you can imagine, Saturday night was buzzing with events building up to Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. Jay-Z's new artist, J. Cole, had a concert at NYU earlier in the night, and MTV Jams' Buttahman threw a birthday party that was attended by industry execs, Power 105.1's Ed Lover and rapper Kia Shine, among others.

Juelz Santana made headlines earlier in the week after he was arrested and later charged with making criminal threats against the mother of his child during an argument outside of his Teaneck, New Jersey, home.

But the Harlem rapper explained that the situation was blown out of proportion and nowhere near as explosive as has been reported. He said the dispute between him and a "significant other" was a personal moment that just occurred in the wrong public space.

"It happened in a small town in New Jersey where there's not too much going on," he told MTV News on Friday (August 28). "So any little thing becomes a big thing. But that's just how they do around here."

Santana wouldn't go into much detail about the cause of the argument, calling the conversation a personal moment between him and his child's mother that he wanted to keep private. But Santana emphasized that there never was a moment where the woman was at any risk or harm while in his presence.

"Everybody has been in a situation with a female where you been mad or upset to a point where it becomes an argument," he said. "We all know how these things get ... they just get blown out of proportion sometimes. I live in an area where people aren't used to my kind — me being a young entertainer. My complex is more older people, it's quiet."

According to The Associated Press, police said the rapper told authorities the woman he was arguing with pulled out a knife. Santana refuted that claim, saying no weapon was drawn by either party. "She wasn't harmed at all, she wasn't gonna be harmed at all," he said.

Santana moved to the area approximately five years ago and despite an occasional misunderstanding between him and the neighbors he said he feels comfortable in the area. (The rapper still remains close to his community; he recently held a charitable weekend in the Bronx where he treated residents to a party, a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure and paid for a neighborhood picnic.)

"I love the spot so much, it's not even about the neighbors," he said. "People have told me to move, but I love the actual structure of the condo I live in. Even if I did go get another house, I'd still keep it. But there's people in houses [around] who are nosy as hell."

Despite Juelz Santana's rep's claim to MTV News that the rapper had not been charged in the altercation with the mother of his son on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday (August 26) that Santana was indeed charged.

A spokesperson for the Teaneck, New Jersey, police told MTV News that the MC (real name: Laron James) was charged with making terroristic threats and possession of a weapon. That weapon is said to have been a kitchen knife from his house. Police also say they were called to the house by the woman and that she claimed Santana threatened to harm her.

Captain Dean Kazinci of the Teaneck Police Department told The Associated Press that the woman told police a verbal dispute became physical. He said Santana told officers the woman was the aggressor, and she had the knife.

On Wednesday, Juelz's rep disputed some of those claims, saying that it was in fact neighbors who alerted police; the rep said she was unaware of the terroristic threat charge. A different source close to Santana also told MTV News that the incident had been "blown out of proportion" and disputed the police department's claims.

Santana posted a $5,000 bond, was released on Tuesday and was back home in the afternoon. Police said he is due back in court on September 9.

Santana could not be reached for comment at press time.

Juelz Santana was arrested Tuesday morning (August 25) after an argument with police, but he is not in jail, according to the rapper's rep.

Santana and his son's mother had a dispute in front of his home in Teaneck, New Jersey, and neighbors called the police. When the cops arrived, Santana (born Laron James) was arrested after getting into an argument with authorities. He was taken to the station and then released. Juelz, an original member of the Diplomats and leader of new rap crew the Skull Gang, was not charged with a crime.

Juelz's rep said he is back at home now and refuted reports that went out earlier Tuesday saying he was in a verbal dispute with his "wife" in front of their child. Santana is not married, and no child was present during their argument or his arrest.

A rep for the Teaneck police said a report about the incident is still being compiled and no details are ready to be released.

Earlier this year, Santana spearheaded the debut compilation from the Skull Gang and has been at work on his new mixtape, The Regan Era. Santana also has an album in the works called Born to Lose, Built to Win, which is coming out on Def Jam. The Harlem native has not released a solo album since 2005 but has remained a viable hip-hop commodity through his various mixtapes (some of which featured leaked songs from an unreleased duet album with Lil Wayne called I Can't Feel My Face) and a string of guest appearances the past several months alongside Jim Jones on "Pop Champagne" and "Dancing on Me."

Fans are still in shock over Michael Jackson's death. Jackson's music entertained and inspired millions, and his devotees are reacting via all forms of media.

TV personality Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter, saying, "So sad to hear about Michael Jackson. His music changed our lives. The world has lost an amazing singer and dancer. I will miss him."

Mariah Carey also tweeted, "I am heartbroken. My prayers go out to the Jackson family and my heart goes out to his children. Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world and the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times and to call him my friend. No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever."

"Just like many other artists, I have always been inspired by Michael Jackson," Keri Hilson said. "He's the only idol I've ever had and I'm saddened that I never got to tell him how much he and his music mean to me. I've met many stars in my life but I would have been completely satisfied just to have laid eyes on MJ himself," she continued. "The closest I've come was hearing he and his band rehearsing right next door to me here in L.A. last month, while he was rehearsing for his tour abroad. I will be overseas at the same time the tour was scheduled so yet again I looked forward to being in the same place."

Juelz Santana spoke to MTV News, still in disbelief. "This is ... damn!" he said. "Wow! Unexpected. A shock. A low blow. All that right there." The Diplomat member said he woke up around 4:45 p.m. to the news of the icon's death.

"I'm getting myself together, walking in the living room [when] they said Mike died," Santana recalled. "It was breaking news at 5. I put it up on Twitter and people were saying his death was still pending. I couldn't believe it. ... I just woke up and they said, 'Mike is dead.' The first thought in your mind is, 'That's Michael Jackson. He can't be dead.' That just shows you everybody is human, nobody is immune to nothing — especially death."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Juelz Santana is still prepping his Regan Era mixtape and upcoming official LP for Def Jam, Born to Lose, Built to Win. But he's also putting out the debut of his group the Skull Gang in a couple of weeks. The squad has an independent deal through Koch Records, and the video for their first single "I Am the Club" should drop any day.

"I pushed the button," Santana said on the set of the video for the Gang's "I Am the Club" in New York. "At the same time, it was that hard work. We did the mixtape; it got a great response when it came out.

"We did a lot of work when it came to the Internet. Koch, they took a liking to it," he added. "They always did business with me, Jim [Jones], Cam. They wanted that fresh new energy, and at the same time, they saw the vision and believed in it. They wanted to give them a shot. We got the album coming out May 5. It's real crazy."

The Gang consists of Richmond Rabb, Un Kasa, Deniro, John Depp, Starr, Riq Rose and his nephew, 10-year-old Ja'Quaye (yeah, little Ja from videos like "S.A.N.T.A.N.A.").

"Skull Gang album, we here, the album is crazy," Santana professed. "Collectively, we all come from different areas. Like I tell people, I never try to copy what the Diplomats was. This would have [come] about even if me and Cam still would have been doing business. ... This was destiny."

Juelz has been announced as one of the performers for his hometown radio station Hot 97's annual mega-concert, Summer Jam. Jim Jones is also on the bill. Expect to see Juelz's Gang as well as Jim Jones' Byrd Gang and Freekey Zekey's 730 Dips clique all onstage.

"Ah, man, it's beautiful," he said about what it looks like to see everyone's crew onstage together. "That was the whole plot. For everybody, for all of us to have — how can I put it? Roc-A-Fella, Bad Boy and Death Row — we all bosses in our own right. We got the swag, we got the energy.

"That's what I feel the whole idea of it is," he added. "To get us to the point where everybody's team is solidified and all the bosses are still comfortable with each other and we can all come to the table. Roc-A-Fella, Death Row and Bad Boy, imagine what the tour would have been like."

Earlier this week, Cam'ron was on New York radio station Hot 97 and said that while he still considers Jim Jones and Juelz Santana Diplomats, he will not be recording with them again. The straw that broke the camel's back, according to Cam, is that Jim Jones publicly denied the two of them having a phone conversation in which they began the process of trying to patch things up.

No reunion with Cam seems just fine with Juelz Santana. On the Manhattan set of the Skull Gang video for "I Am the Club," Santana said Cam's revelation was a relief.

"I'm just glad that people get to see the type of person he really is," Juelz said. "Once again, he said a lot of things about Jim — [talking to] him, which I don't really know about. We all had separate relationships at the end of the day. [Cam] has yet to tell people what Juelz did. You dig what I'm saying? Let's be serious. At the end of the day, [Cam] can't look in the mirror when it comes to me. He knows how loyal I was to him," Santana continued. "He knows how much of a brother I was to him."

According to Juelz, Cam's declaration of not wanting to record with him and Jim Jones makes it easier to explain to the fans.

"It kind of makes me feel good, 'cause it lets the people know you don't have to ask me that [reunion] question. He's telling y'all. 'No matter what the fans want, I'm not doing it.' It takes a load off my back. Cam gave y'all the answer. He's the boss. He's always been the boss. I never tried to take that way from him. It is what it is. I'm moving forward. We all got kids. I got family, my peoples got families. We're moving forward."

Just like Cam is focusing on making music on the solo side and with his new crew, the U.N., Juelz wants his own group of artists to blow up. He recently secured an album deal for the Skull Gang, and their self-titled LP is due out May 5.

The-Dream at the 'Rockin' That Thang' remix video shoot

The-Dream brings out the stars. Ludacris, Juelz Santana, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross and Fabolous recently came to Brooklyn to shoot the video for the remix of "Rockin' That Thang."

"It's all about making good collaborations and good music in 2009," Luda said, taking a break while fellow Def Jam artist Fabolous performed in another room.

"Def Jam tries to stay family oriented," 'Cris continued. "That's what it's about. We're here to compete. Competition is serious. Not only are we competing against each other, but as a family, we're competing against other families. It's always good to see individuals come together with a lot of craziness going on in hip-hop."

Juelz Santana was contemplating making an unofficial remix of the song, before he was asked by the label to jump on this one.

"It's a record I heard and loved before I even got on it," Santana said. "I was actually gonna do a little remix, like how everybody do their remixes and put them out. I was going to do it like that anyway, but it was just a blessing that I was asked to be on the remix with a lot of other talented artists. ... They are all my labelmates, so it's a beautiful thing. Everybody killed it and did their thing."

"I didn't know everybody that was going to be on here," Fabolous said. "They just hit me up and said they were trying to do a remix to The-Dream record."

"I gotta shout out The-Dream, I gotta shout everybody on the remix," Rick Ross said. "Dream is on fire — everything he drops, all those #1 records. The ladies love his swagger. He may be the most prolific writer of recent times, because he continues to churn out classics. You gotta salute The-Dream."

Dream, who slept for a portion of the video shoot (he was suffering from a cold), said that he wanted to take a backseat on the remix.

"I was just trying to do something that hadn't been done since the '90s, where the [guests] were featured more than the actual artist," Dream explained. "So I just left my hook on it and added those four guys to it."

"I was all for that," Fab said of the remix route. "That's been out of the game so long. Usually when they remix it, they put one dude on it. This one went back to what they was doing before, and it was working."

Dream said to not expect some big mini-movie with the video, but promised that it would be entertaining nonetheless.

"This video ain't about nothing," he laughed. "It's a performance video trying to get everybody else in the same place at the same time. Unfortunately, this is the recession. If it wasn't, we'll probably be in the desert in Iran somewhere. But we're in Brooklyn shooting. Either way, it's still great."

Juelz Santana turned 26 years old Wednesday, and friends and family threw a surprise get-together with cake and balloons. One thing the guest star of "Pop Champagne" was not doing at this party was sipping syrup. Santana wants to make sure everyone knows that although he did experiment with the concoction less than two years ago, he doesn't indulge now.

"For one, I stopped drinking it totally — that was a year and a half ago," Santana explained.

In the new edition of XXL, Juelz's onetime professional mentor Cam'ron is quoted as saying that the reason their relationship went sour was that Santana was addicted to sipping syrup. Juelz sat down with MTV News in an effort to clear his name and reasoned Cam's claims were just for publicity and to divert attention away from what Santana called less-than-above-board business practices.

"Me and Weezy was cool. When I saw him, I would drink it," Santana explained about his past use of syrup. "It was just, like — I don't even drink liquor. I'm a weed head. I smoke. Never popped a pill in my life. I drank the sizzurp, I felt it. I said, 'When I feel like doing it, I'mma do it.' But anybody that knows me — even Cam knows — I was never the type of person to let anything take control of me. I'm from Harlem. I felt [those claims] were way out for him. He planned that out. 'Let me figure out a way to tell them why I stopped speaking to Juelz. Oh! He was sipping sizzurp. They might go for that.' "

Independent of a possible reconciliation with Cam, the young Diplomat has moved on with his own squad, the Skull Gang. In addition to Santana's solo mixtape The Reagan Era, he's putting out another street CD for his unit, The Takeover Part 2.

"It's a movement at the same time," he said of the Gang. "It's kinda like the Dipset in the same way. I don't mean music-wise or crew-wise; I mean that everybody is individual artists and we came together to do the Skull Gang things so everybody could get their looks, and we can find out from the people to see who they wanna see more at the time. It's like a tool."

Juelz just completed guest verses for albums by The-Dream and Jadakiss. 'Kiss returned the favor and will appear on Juelz's upcoming Born to Lose, Bred to Win, which does not have a set release date.
