Gloriana at the American Music Awards on Sunday

Sunday night's American Music Awards were so full of incredible performances — from Lady Gaga's liberal use of pyrotechnics to Adam Lambert's sexy display — that the actual awards given out seemed almost secondary. Still, the night's biggest upset probably belonged to country act Gloriana, who beat out Gaga (as well as R&B star Keri Hilson and rising hip-hop star Kid Cudi) for the Breakthrough Artist award.

The country group formed in 2008 when brothers Tom and Mike Gossin teamed up with singer and solo artist Cheyenne Kimball (who had first grabbed headlines as the winner of "America's Most Talented Kid" in 2002). Though the Gossin brothers are from Utica, New York, they relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, to kickstart Gloriana. Once the band recruited Rachel Reinert (whom they discovered via MySpace), they began working on songs and ended up teaming up with producer Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty, Edwin McCain), who co-wrote their first single, "Wild at Heart."

The song was the highest-selling country debut single of this year and landed them a spot as the opening act on Taylor Swift's Fearless tour. The group's self-titled debut album came out on Serletic's Emblem Records label back in August, where it debuted at #3 on the Billboard albums chart and sold 44,000 albums. They'll no doubt get another chart boost from their exposure on Sunday's show.

Gloriana are currently preparing for a month-long tour of their own before they re-join Swift on the road beginning next March.

It seems like celebrities even turn to Twitter to make birthday wishes come true. Drake turned 23 years old on October 24, and one of the gifts he asked for was a serenade from Keri Hilson. Drake posted the request on Twitter, saying, "I wish Keri Hilson would call me and sing 'Slow Dance' to me for my birthday. That's my jawnt."

Ms. Keri spoke to MTV News last week and assured us that she definitely tried to grant Drake his request, but the Young Money young gun would not answer the phone.

"I tried," Hilson explained. "Drake ... for his birthday he asked me to sing my latest single 'Slow Dance.' I just randomly saw it. I rarely check my updates, but I did. ... You know, Drake rarely tweets. That's why I said, 'It feels like my birthday with you tweeting and all.' He said, 'For my birthday, I really wish Keri Hilson could sing me "Slow Dance." ' So he said, 'Keri, you should call me and sing "Slow Dance" a cappella.' So I was like, 'He's gonna call me out?' So I called him and [the phone] went straight to voice mail. I tried. I told him I tried and he put on Twitter, 'She actually tried.' "

Drizzy did give Hilson her props, writing, "Twitter is too powerful ... Sing to me my angel ... Sing to meee!"

Both Hilson and Drake have recorded songs for Timbaland's upcoming Shock Value 2.

NEW YORK — You know it's a going to be a good night when a big, thuggish-looking man with a scar going down half his face comes into the party singing Rihanna's chorus to "Run This Town."

Now imagine being at that same party and the DJ announces that Rihanna is actually in the building. Too crazy. Thursday night in New York City, if you weren't rehearsing for the MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall, or part of Raekwon's CD-release show at S.O.B.'s, then you had to be at the M2 Ultra Lounge.

Rihanna, Katy Perry, Devyne Stephens, DJ Clue, newcomers Jay Fresh Kicks and Jeremih, Keri Hilson, Bad Boy artist Janelle Monáe, Outkast's Big Boi, the legendary Bootsy Collins, Sammie, Goodie Mob members Cee-Lo and Big Gipp, producers Danja, Jim Jonsin and Bryan-Michael Cox, model Tyson Beckford and others attended the Hennessy Black-sponsored event that doubled as the BMI Awards afterparty.

DJ Mick Boogie spun, mixing Young Money's "Every Girl" with Gucci Mane-featuring cuts such as the "Obsessed" remix and "Make Tha Trap Say Aye."

Polow Da Don took over the mic in the DJ booth for a short time, letting Mario and famed songwriter Sean Garrett perform their club smash "Break Up." Mario started off rapping Gucci Mane's part: "Now baby girl had dumped me/ She no longer wants me/ I'm no longer hired, she said that I've been fired/ On to the next one, more fish in the sea/ Girls are like buses, miss one, next 15, one comin'."

The singer then held down his own part of the record, crooning, "Don't I make your earlobe freeze?/ Don't, when I dive, I dive deep?"

Garrett then got on the mic with his verse: "Baby, don't leave me till tomorrow/ Tonight we gon' get a lil' tipsy with a bottle."

When it came to the celebrities at the event, some mingled and some just danced in their own VIP section. Rihanna wore black shades and a black hood and seemed to really be enjoying the reggae. Meanwhile, you could see Keri Hilson walking around in the upstairs VIP, while Katy Perry made her way through the crowded dance floor downstairs.

Being that he's a Video Music Award-nominated artiste, Asher Roth takes his craft very seriously. Which is why, when MTV News visited the set of his "She Don't Wanna Man" clip — which premiered Monday (August 24) on MTV — we found him tucked away in a corner, eyes closed, getting deep into character. It's called method acting, in case you were wondering.

Actually, we're kidding. He was lounging backstage with his buddies Boyder and Brain Bangley, joking about hangovers and scoping out the video vixens director Jonathan Lia had assembled for the shoot. We told you he takes his craft seriously.

"This is a real party; it's not one of those fake video parties," Roth laughed. "A lot of the scenes are back and forth, boys versus girls. [It's] a girl-empowerment song. Letting the girls do their thing and have fun and just boogie and not have us be all over them. But we still chase after some booty, you know?"

The video — which features Roth and company traipsing through a packed club, macking on (and spectacularly failing with) assorted females — also boasts a cameo by Keri Hilson (she gives Roth no play either), an old Asher associate who sings the track's hook.

"When we put 'She Don't Wanna Man' together, we pretty much put together your dream-team list of artists that you would love to collaborate with on that song. And Keri was a friend that was in Atlanta with us, and we had met early on, and we were talking about working together," Roth explained. "So when we put together our dream list, she was on the top of it. We sent [the song] over to her, and she absolutely murdered it. So we had to get her for the video too."

And he should know. After all, Roth — who's up for two Moonmen at the VMAs (Best Hip-Hop Video and Best New Artist) — is quickly becoming an old pro when it comes to making videos. And if there's one thing he's learned early on, it's that shooting them should be as fun as possible.

"Keri is an absolute honor to have around. She's a beauty. She's so cool. For those who don't know her, she's legitimately a great human being," he said. "So we're just happy to hang out. We're all buddies, we get along, and we're lucky to be in a situation where we can be ourselves and rock with our friends and shoot videos that get to be on MTV."

Just one week before he's officially sentenced following the plea deal he struck in the Rihanna case, Chris Brown appeared at ease as he joined Keri Hilson in Los Angeles on the set of what is apparently Hilson's next video, "Slow Down."

The pair were joined by plenty of musical company: Omarion, Monica, Polow Da Don and Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton were all also on set.

At press time, it was unclear what will the premise of the video will be. Chris Robinson is apparently helming the clip — the director spoke with Rap-Up.com earlier this week and confirmed he was in town to collaborate with Hilson. The director previously worked on Hilson's most recent video, for "Knock You Down."

Representatives for Brown and Hilson were not available at press time to confirm details about the video.

Brown was clad in Billionaire's Boys Club garb on set and once again sported his "Ooops" chain. The singer drew the attention of bloggers and fans alike when he wore the same pendant during Diddy and Ashton Kutcher's white party in Los Angeles over the 4th of July weekend. After Brown agreed to a plea deal following his February altercation with then-girlfriend Rihanna, he apologized to the public in a YouTube broadcast.

Images from the set have popped up online, but they appear to have been taken during breaks or after production of the shoot.

Brown is scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom on August 27 to be formerly sentenced to community labor service, therapy sessions, and probation.

Fans are still in shock over Michael Jackson's death. Jackson's music entertained and inspired millions, and his devotees are reacting via all forms of media.

TV personality Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter, saying, "So sad to hear about Michael Jackson. His music changed our lives. The world has lost an amazing singer and dancer. I will miss him."

Mariah Carey also tweeted, "I am heartbroken. My prayers go out to the Jackson family and my heart goes out to his children. Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world and the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times and to call him my friend. No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever."

"Just like many other artists, I have always been inspired by Michael Jackson," Keri Hilson said. "He's the only idol I've ever had and I'm saddened that I never got to tell him how much he and his music mean to me. I've met many stars in my life but I would have been completely satisfied just to have laid eyes on MJ himself," she continued. "The closest I've come was hearing he and his band rehearsing right next door to me here in L.A. last month, while he was rehearsing for his tour abroad. I will be overseas at the same time the tour was scheduled so yet again I looked forward to being in the same place."

Juelz Santana spoke to MTV News, still in disbelief. "This is ... damn!" he said. "Wow! Unexpected. A shock. A low blow. All that right there." The Diplomat member said he woke up around 4:45 p.m. to the news of the icon's death.

"I'm getting myself together, walking in the living room [when] they said Mike died," Santana recalled. "It was breaking news at 5. I put it up on Twitter and people were saying his death was still pending. I couldn't believe it. ... I just woke up and they said, 'Mike is dead.' The first thought in your mind is, 'That's Michael Jackson. He can't be dead.' That just shows you everybody is human, nobody is immune to nothing — especially death."

Whether or not you agree with Irv Gotti that Jay-Z is a better MC than Eminem, Gotti is passionate about hip-hop, just like all of you people reading this. I.G. knew Jay back in the day, when Hov was standing on a pool table battle rapping, and he's been on the receiving end of some of Slim Shady's famously sharp punch lines. Is Irv showing favoritism toward his homie? Is he still sour about his quarrels with the Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit factions? He says no, but we definitely want to know what you guys think about his assessment in our comments section.

Also today, we have Chicago singer Jeremih (Chi, what up? Mixtape Daily will be out there soon, homies). The cat came out of nowhere to lock things down on the radio for the past several weeks with "Birthday Sex." He started singing seriously only a couple of years ago, but he writes his own lyrics and makes his own beats. He says he's going to be here for a while. Can he be the Derrick Rose of R&B? He's off to a great start.

Fire Starter: Jeremih

If you don't know the lyrics by now, you'll be very familiar with them by the end of the summer: "It's your birthday, so I know you wanna ri-i-i-ide out." Singer Jeremih got right down to business with his hit "Birthday Sex."

"I still [read] comments like, 'I thought it was The-Dream.' Or 'I thought it was R. Kelly.' Or 'I thought it was J. Holiday' — guys that have similar sounds and tones to my voice as well as the instrumentation to the song," Jeremih said about the reaction to his song and how he gets compared to his older peers. "But those are big names. I feel real good. I feel blessed to have a hit, and even to be compared to those hitmakers is great."

Although fans are familiar with his voice, everyone isn't aware of what the 21-year-old Chicago native looks like. That might change now that a video for the song just came out.

Jeremih wrote the song (he writes and produces) last September, and on October 30, it debuted on the airwaves in his hometown. The station gave the upstart — who has only been singing seriously for two years — a shot. A few months later, a host of record execs saw that the song had legs, and everybody reached out to him. He decided to roll with Def Jam.

"I wouldn't say it's my favorite song on the album," J admitted of "Birthday Sex." "It just was chosen first."

Right now, he's partial to a ballad and a club banger from his self-titled, self-produced LP.

"It's called 'Jumpin',' " he said of one cut he loves. "But my favorite is called 'Starting All Over,' which is a slow, soul love song. I wrote it because ... in relationships, that's the hardest thing to do. You breaking up, you making up. I'm saying in this song: 'This girl is worth starting all over.'

" 'Jumpin',' hands down, club banger of '09," he added. "The crowd is jumping. The hook is soulful. The lyrics are witty, dumb, off-the-wall type of words."

Def Jam would be overjoyed if either song is even half as successful as "Birthday Sex." Not only do the fans love the record, but Jeremih's peers — from R. Kelly to Red Cafe — have added verses to their own unofficial remixes of the song.

"Just the fact that people are taking time out to add verses shows how powerful the record is," he said. "That it has impacted a lot of people's lives. Honestly, I've heard a lot of them from the guys on the block to the mainstream. I really feel that it's some records that's out that's just timeless, that if somebody tries to add on to be better, it wouldn't have the same effect as the original. And I don't even know if it's because it's me or whatever, but I've heard a lot of remixes, and I felt that nobody has made the song any better than what it already is. But I'm all ears."

Jeremih said it will take a lady to knock him off his feet with a remix. "I feel the perfect remix has to be a female singing it me for my birthday. That would be the perfect. I'm still waiting on one, man," Jeremih said, suggesting Keri Hilson for the job. "She's hot, she's fresh. I know she's done a lot of damage on the writing side too. I feel like her swagger, it seems like it would be the female version of me on the song. I still haven't met her, but I feel she'll do her thing on the remix. Can you sing to me, Miss Keri baby?"

Jeremih's birthday is coming up soon — July 17 — 10 days after his debut hits stores.

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Who is the best? Who would win in a battle? It's a hypothetical conversation that hip-hop fans have every day about their favorite spitters.

We here at MTV News have a great time debating the "Hottest MCs in the Game" (check for that '09 list coming sooner than you think — controversial!), and in October, Vibe magazine put out their list of the Greatest Rappers Alive. More than 920,000 fans voted on tournament brackets, in which different MCs would face each other in dream rap matches.

Irv Gotti came by the MTV offices and spoke to us about the list recently. Although he wasn't as adamant as Joe Budden was about the list being wrong, IG took exception to Eminem ranking in the top spot.

"I got a thing with Eminem," Gotti said. "This has nothing to do with the beef. I don't really feel like I have beef with Eminem. This has no hatred or nothing. This is just my opinion on it. Vibe did a thing, and they had him as the #1 rapper. Sh-- like that kinda pisses me off. You know why? Because let's take Eminem's records. Watch my analogy. Eminem is a great artist, no doubt. He puts words together, he's witty, a smart lyricist, a great lyricist. But how can we say the guy is the best rapper alive? Look at Hov. He makes real records. Every one of Eminem's first singles is some clown sh--. He's clowning. Is that the #1? That's not my #1 rapper, man."

Gotti said he also factored in the battle element in deciding that Jay-Z is better than Em. He said that back in the day, Slim Shady wouldn't have a chance against a young Jay — or DMX and Ja Rule, for that matter.

"No disrespect, you're a great lyricist, but I come from a school — I know they 'battled' in '8 Mile' — but I come from where they battled on the streets with guns out," the head of Murder Inc. said. "They would have put you under pressure. All that 'off the top,' they would have put you under pressure. I been to battles with X, Jay and Ja, that was some real sh--. Homie, you wouldn't been able to survive. These n---as was going with written sh--. In your grill. X [would say,] 'I don't walk, I stalk, living foul.' Saying some sh-- you wouldn't been able to withstand."

Gotti said Em would survive in a cipher with the big dogs.

"You would have been like, 'My name is Em and I eat M&Ms. I eat you.' What?" IG laughed. He said the Detroit legend would have been greeted with three harsh words: " 'Shut the f--- up!' It would have been a 'shut the f--- up' moment off the top. Dame [Dash] would have been like, 'Look at him. He's crunchy! He's wack!' Then I look at the singles he put out. They're all good, but they only work for him. I say take Eminem, and let him say 'Hard Knock Life.' Still hot. Now let's have Jay-Z say the 'We Made You' song. They would laugh him out the f---ing building. ... It would be over."

Irv finished by saying the best rapper alive has to be Jay-Z or Lil Wayne.

<i>Now That's What I Call Music! Vol. 30</i>

Just weeks after the Jonas Brothers' "3D Concert Experience" soundtrack was denied the top spot in its chart debut thanks to Taylor Swift, the tween country star will block another peer from the #1 slot next week when the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack has to settle for #2.

Only this time, Swift had some help, as she's just one of 20 artists on the chart-topping Now That's What I Call Music! 30 compilation — also featuring hits from Kanye West, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry — which will claim the pole position on the Billboard albums chart thanks to a first-week tally of 146,000.

That was enough to push the "Montana" soundtrack — in what could be the TV show's first and only big-screen installment — to #2 on sales of 139,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Not far behind is the deluxe edition of the "Twilight" soundtrack, which sold another 102,000 copies to hold on to the #3 position, just ahead of the chart debut of Keri Hilson's oft-delayed In a Perfect World ... , which claims #4 thanks to 94,000 units shifted.

Kelly Clarkson's reign at #1 ends after just two weeks, as her comeback album All I Ever Wanted slips to #5 on sales of close to 52,000, just barely edging out U2's No Line on the Horizon, which falls to #6 with more than 51,000 units, squeaking ahead of Lady Gaga's The Fame, which drops to #7 with sales of 45,000.

After months of familiar faces, the rest of the top 10 features a number of debuts, including a #8 bow from Papa Roach for their Metamorphosis (44,000), Jim Jones' Pray IV Reign (43,000) and Martina McBride's Shine (41,000). Thinking man's metallers Mastodon just missed a top 10 debut with their latest concept album, Crack the Skye, which landed at #11 on sales of just over 41,000, pushing Swift's Fearless (40,000) down to #12, marking the first time since that album's release five months ago that it hasn't been in the top 10.

There were more debuts as well, including angsty rockers Blue October at #13 with Approaching Normal (37,000), Slim Thug at #14 with Boss of All Bosses (32,000), Doom (the masked rapper known as MF Doom) at #52 with Born Like This (11,000) and former "American Idol" contestant Mandisa at #83 with her second full-length studio album of contemporary gospel Freedom.

Elsewhere, The-Dream's Love vs. Money had a short stay in the top 10, falling to #14 in week three on sales of 36,000, while the Decemberists' vaunted rock opera Hazards of Love managed to gain 35 percent in sales (28,000) while falling four spots to #19, and Adele's 19 jumped nearly 20 spots to #23 (21,000) after her appearance on "Dancing With the Stars."

Over on the catalog chart, the reissue of Pearl Jam's iconic debut Ten topped the charts with 60,000 sold, and thanks to the "American Idol" bump, two volumes of Motown hits saw triple-digit increases, with Motown #1's Volume 2 shifting 6,000 for a 1,000 percent jump over the previous week and Motown #1's leaping 645 percent on sales of 5,000. Fans were also clearly digging Adam Lambert's take on "Tracks of My Tears," as that song's digital sales were up 477 percent over the previous week to 1,000.

Look for chart debuts next week from Bow Wow, Flo Rida, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Keith Urban.

Lil Wayne performs in Universal City on Sunday

At the Los Angeles-area stop of Lil Wayne's I Am Music Tour — which also features Keri Hilson, Gym Class Heroes, Gorilla Zoe and T-Pain (recently recovered from his, er, golf-cart accident) — Weezy and Hilson indulged in some mature-audiences-only flirting that had the crowd shrieking with excitement.

A video posted on Wayne's blog shows the pair grinding playfully while performing "Turnin Me On" (from Hilson's just-released debut LP, In a Perfect World...) at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, on Sunday. After the song ends with Hilson singing the line, "... recognize a real woman," Hilson takes a moment to talk to the crowd about Wayne.

"I don't know about y'all, but he's definitely turning me on right now!" she says. "That's right — Wayne, he knows how to recognize a real woman."

She then moves behind him — standing a good six inches taller than the diminutive MC — reaches over his shoulder, lifts up his shirt and says, "Let me tell y'all something you might not know: Ain't a damn thing lil about this Wayne!"

As the crowd shrieks its approval and Hilson begins walking offstage, Wayne gives her a playful swat on the butt. She sings, "Now wait a minute!," then laughs and says "Bye baby!" Wayne says "Bye baby!" before roaring "Keri Hilson, y'aaaaaaall!"

The pair also performed the song — with more tame flirting — on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Friday night.

Lil Wayne's tour continues into April, with stops on the West Coast and Hawaii before heading into the Midwest. At press time, Weezy's oft-delayed forthcoming rock album, Rebirth, still did not have a confirmed release date.

NEW YORK — Keri Hilson may be known for providing hot backing vocals for the likes of Timbaland and Kanye West, appearing in Usher's "Love in This Club" video and writing songs for Britney Spears, but on Tuesday night, it was all about Keri.

Hilson celebrated the long-delayed release of her debut album, In a Perfect World..., with a party at Pink Elephant nightclub in New York. Not only did dozens of fans wait in a line that wrapped around the block, but a few of Hilson's most famous friends showed their support.

Model Tyson Beckford worked the red carpet and told a scrum of reporters that he "loves Keri's music." Beckford had some more high praise for the singer, predicting a future full of success. "She's coming up. She's going to be big," he said.

Inside, Akon rubbed shoulders with Red Café while Joe Budden, Melyssa Ford, Adrienne Bailon and Hot 97 personality Angie Martinez took in the festivities in the VIP room at the swank venue, which had Hilson's album posters lining the walls.

The debut LP features some big collaborations, from Lil Wayne, Keyshia Cole and Ne-Yo to producers Polow Da Don and Timbaland. There were whispers throughout the night that Tim would turn up with the Pussycat Dolls, but both acts were no-shows.

Hilson arrived around midnight, wearing a revealing black blazer paired only with gold jewelry. She stayed close to her entourage all night, bobbing along to her own beats.

As a crowd of fans converged on her booth, Hilson stood up on one of the many red leather couches.

"Thank you all for your support!" she shouted.

Hilson spoke about her Dr. Dre influences, working with Timbaland and why the album's release was delayed so many times during a visit to MTV News on Tuesday.
