Peter Dolving, the outspoken frontman for Swedish thrash-metal titans the Haunted, might not be able to vote in next week's election, but that doesn't mean he can't have an opinion on this year's presidential hopefuls. Anyone who frequents Blabbermouth.net knows that Dolving has an opinion on just about everything — and Tuesday's momentous vote is no exception.

But were Dolving a U.S. citizen, and eligible to vote, he's not so sure he could pull the lever for Barack Obama or John McCain.

"If I had citizenship, I couldn't vote for any of the two candidates, because it's a mockery on democracy," Dolving posited. "You have a two-party system, and it's just ridiculous. It's not even remotely politics, and it's in complete disregard of anything that has to do with the constitution. There is a truly great political tradition in the U.S., of democracy and speaking out, but it's been subverted so harshly by business-market interests over the last 150 years that it's just sad. The potential for something truly great, something so radical that no other country's tried it, something that's truly libertarian ... it's been stabbed in the back by people who have no interest whatsoever in that kind of thought tradition and that kind of society, because it doesn't promote their personal goals and gains. It's really sad."

Dolving said he's been keeping a close eye on both campaigns, and he even watched the three televised debates. But he's not impressed with either candidate and feels they're just espousing the same old politics of their predecessors.

"It's all complete bullsh--," Dolving said. "It's really f---ing sad to see how American politics have turned into pure promotion and PR machinery. It really is sad, because it has nothing to do with the basic idea of building something that resembles the dream or the ideal, what Americanism could be and should be."

Dolving and the Haunted won't be here for next week's election, but with a new album, Versus, in stores now, they'll most likely be returning to the States this spring for a full headlining run. The band is currently in the middle of planning that trek. Versus, the band's sixth offering, is a more aggressive affair than 2006's experimental set, The Dead Eye, and marks the band's return to recording live.

"A lot of bands have started coming out around the metal and hardcore scene, and all these bands — we call them Pro Tools bands — they sound 10,000 percent better on record than they can ever deliver live, because they can't deliver that sh-- live," Dolving said. "We wanted to take the live setting back into the studio for this one, and we recorded it live over eight days, and then fiddled with the vocals and some solos over the next couple of days. It was a laid-back, quick recording. We decided we'd record it live and not try to worry too much, and it worked out really, really well. It's got the dynamic of what we are as a band, and, as we've gone along, we've felt more and more that it's really important for us to represent on record what we do live."

Versus is a confrontational record, he said, with elements "of everything we've done over the years." The disc contains "music we really dig," and the Haunted decided to take their time with the record to make sure all of the songs worked well together.

But don't expect to catch the Haunted on Ozzfest this summer. The singer said that, if offered another chance to join the bill (they were on the tour in 2005), they'd probably turn it down.

"If it was something like the Ozzfest, but with better organization and less internal bullsh-- going on, it might be interesting," he said, "but there was too much drama and power plays going on around that whole circus. When it comes down to it, that's not what this is about, so why would we waste our time and energy on something like that? We're here to make music and entertain people, and you don't do that when you let your personal-drama bullsh-- bleed over into, and affect, shows. The whole circus feel of it was just kind of ridiculous."

The rest of the week's metal news:

Mastodon have christened their forthcoming LP Crack the Skye. The record, produced by Brendan O'Brien (Rage Against the Machine), is expected to hit stores early next year and will feature seven tracks, including "Divinations," "Ghost of Karelia" and the 15-minute closer "The Last Baron." ...

As I Lay Dying will be filming several of their upcoming live gigs as part of a DVD release that could be out in the spring. The set will feature live performances, backstage footage, interviews, photos, production videos and a documentary on the group. The band's shows on November 17 (San Marcos, California), November 19 (in a yet-to-be-determined city) and November 21 (Anaheim, California) will be taped and feature support acts Bring Me the Horizon, Terror and Born of Osiris. ...

Into Eternity will be rejoined by guitarist Tim Roth for four shows in western Canada this week, including a Winnipeg show alongside Dismember and a headlining appearance on Halloween night at Zombiefest in Lethbridge, Alberta. ...

New Jersey's God Forbid have titled their forthcoming full-length Earthsblood. The LP is tentatively set for a February release through Century Media. According to guitarist Doc Coyle, the title "came to me after watching the film 'There Will Be Blood.' What is the price of ambition? Is the blood of our bodies and the blood of the earth one and the same? With the current energy crisis, and its relation to many of the military conflicts worldwide, there has been a global, collective consciousness that has emerged in regards to the interdependence between humankind and the planet in which we inhabit. Coincidentally, the lyrics that Byron Davis and Dallas Coyle had written meshed with these revelations perfectly. This isn't a preachy, trendy, 'hip to be green' album, nor is it a concept album. It's just an abstract observation." ...

Slayer have posted a new track, called "Psychopathy Red," on YouTube. The song was inspired by Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo and is one of the three new tracks the band recorded during a recent studio session. In the next few months, Slayer will return to the studio to finish tracking their next one, which could be in stores by next summer, if all goes well. ...

Several ex- and current members of three popular metal groups have teamed up to form an '80s metal cover group called Kobra Kai. The band, featuring Shad guitarist Jon Donais, Frank Aresti of Fates Warning and former All That Remains drummer Mike Bartlett, have booked several gigs, including one set for Friday night (October 31) in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. ...

Behemoth are streaming a new track, called "Quadosh," over on their MySpace page. The song will be featured on the band's forthcoming EP, Ezkaton, which hits stores November 11. ...

According to Blabbermouth, founding bassist Dennis Pepa has quit Death Angel. "Throughout my career with the band, I've brought a punk-influenced edge to the Death Angel sound, and as an open-minded musician in need of change, I'd like to diversify and explore other opportunities within and beyond the genre of metal," he said in a statement, issued to the metal site. "I look forward to being involved in new music projects and continuing to connect with all of you."

Anyone who has ever walked away from one of Gwar's gigs understands that, in all likelihood, by evening's end, they'll end up completely soaked in fake blood, urine, pus and vomit. It's become the extraterrestrial metallers' trademark, and they incorporate it into their performances to heighten the overall experience and inject a dose of flippancy into the proceedings.

Conversely, Erik Danielsson, the malevolent singer/bassist who fronts Satan-loving Swedish black-metal magicians Watain, doesn't have a flip bone in his body. To see Watain perform live is nothing if not a pestilent experience, which is just the way Danielsson wants it. Instead of fake blood, Watain drench the crowd with what the frontman maintains is real blood, collected "from the Watain cellars, of course." The band actually douses itself in the same blood during sets, which, when coupled with sweat, creates a pong on their bus a label spokesperson described as "that of an open grave."

From the stage, Danielsson has "seen people both crying and vomiting at the same time." He's even watched fans "taking the blood that we've thrown at them and licking it up off the floor, and giving this genuine impression of being psychopaths all of a sudden."

He said he often wonders "what those people thought when they woke up that morning, in their clean little beds at home. Did they think that they would stand and lick blood from the floor at the concert halls? We aim to present a different reality to them, because this reality exists far away from the nice little houses with clean beds. That is what happens at a Watain gig, and we look forward to bringing this to the U.S., because it's fertile soil for such experiments. It's all about wild, raw fire and getting loose. Some people can take it. Some can't."

In May, Watain's loyal American allegiance will get its first chance to lap up lots of "rotten" blood, when the band crosses the pond for a string of East Coast gigs. The tour will be in support of the group's April 17 release, Sworn to the Dark, which follows up its second album, 2003's Casus Luciferi. While Danielsson wouldn't discuss which bands will be touring with, he did promise "an extremely strong package" boasting "bands that know how to play black metal for real."

Sworn to the Dark, which Watain started working on three years ago during what was an "extremely intense period in the history of Watain," will feature 11 tracks, including "Satan's Hunger," "Dead but Dreaming" and "Storm of the Antichrist." The lyrics for two of the songs on the album were actually provided by some of the band's underground associates: Dissection guitarist Set Teitan penned the cut "Legions of the Black Light," and Ofermod's Belfagor — "who gave us one of his old lyrics because he went into prison and could not finish the album that he had planned," Danielsson said — wrote the song "Darkness and Death."

"We're trying to take away the superfluous parts, in favor of a more easily approachable feeling of the whole album," the frontman said of Sworn to the Dark. "We want to take away the parts that are just confusing and leave the primal, raw energy in there that everyone can understand. This whole album is more traditional. Each melody, each song, is much more powerful. We thought much more about it, and we felt much stronger when we wrote this record than anything we did previously. But it's a pretty natural evolution — to scale away the superfluous parts and leave room for the things that really mean something."

Danielsson claims he tried to "simplify things a bit" with his lyrics on this LP, because "before, I was using a lot of very obscure metaphors, while now, I try to take it to a level where even a kid, at parts, could understand what we're about. The lyrics on this album are, in a way, a lot more banal. It's a strange word to use, but you don't need a master's degree in philosophy to figure out what we're about."

What, ultimately, does Watain hope to accomplish with Sworn to the Dark? "World War III," Danielsson said, matter-of-factly. And while he doesn't advocate church burnings, murders or desecrations, he does see a correlation between black metal and actual physical violence.

"Many people say that they have all these dreams, and they want to do this and they want to do that, and one day they claim they will — but in the end, they end up in their caskets rotting," he explained. "Every thought, every word and every feeling doesn't really hold any relevance until it manifests on a physical plain. That is when it becomes alive. Black metal is not just a funny thing we do in our spare time. It's what we live and breathe. I think [violence is] a very natural component to the black-metal scene ... because black metal is growing grounds for extreme thought, extreme speeches and extreme feelings. At one point or another, these things always manifest. If you call upon death, death will come."

The rest of the week's metal news:

The Dillinger Escape Plan will begin recording their forthcoming LP with producer Steve Evetts (He Is Legend, Sepultura) within the next few weeks. The band hopes to have the disc — which will include "Saigon Whore," "Doll Keeper" and "Party Smasher" — out in September. ... Shadows Fall's Atlantic Records debut, Threads of Life, has been slated for an April 3 release. The trek launches February 28 in Springfield, Missouri, and wraps up March 15 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. ... Bassist Valentin Rakhmanov has left Nebraska metal collective Cellador. A statement from the band claims "all parties involved in the decision agreed that it would work out best for everyone," and "the issues involved in reaching this conclusion were not personal-related, but rather simply musical differences and contrasting professional agendas." Cellador will audition potential replacements soon, and those interested should contact the band via its MySpace page. ...

Poison the Well, the End and This Is Hell will tour together next month. Just seven dates have been confirmed, and they run from February 22 in Tallahassee, Florida, through March 1 in Jacksonville, Florida. ... Hate Eternal have signed with Metal Blade and are working on fresh material for their forthcoming full-length, which they'll record in June. ... Immolation have wrapped the recording of Shadows in the Light, which is slated for release in April. The tour commences March 19 in Orlando, Florida, and dates are booked through April 13 in Anaheim, California. ... Zao have announced that guitarist Russ Cogdell has rejoined the band following a brief hiatus during which he recovered from knee surgery. Meanwhile, the band has lost drummer Jeff Gretz due to a "difference in attitude and goals." Josh Walters, formerly of the Juliana Theory, has been enlisted as Gretz's replacement. ...

Southern Lord has signed San Francisco's Om, a duo formed by the rhythm section of the disbanded stoner-metal band Sleep. The recording of Om's forthcoming LP will begin this summer at Electrical Audio Studios with Steve Albini (Nirvana, High on Fire). The trek kicks off February 8 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and wraps February 21 in Bakersfield, California. ... With Deftones frontman Chino Moreno and Far's Shaun Lopez behind the boards, Will Haven recently tracked three new songs that will appear on the band's forthcoming summer studio offering. ... Deicide drummer Steve Asheim was recently detained by police in Innsbruck, Austria, and questioned on suspicion of bank robbery. While the drummer was inside a bank, depositing money from merch sales, staffers allegedly grew suspicious of Asheim's appearance. They were further alarmed by the fact that most of money was marked with red dye. The police were summoned, and the drummer was transported downtown, where he was interrogated about a recent bank robbery in the area. Several hours later, after having explained to police that the money was earned by his band and that a leaky pen caused the discoloration, he was released. ...

All-male Seattle stoner-experimental band Lesbian will release their four-song full-length album, Power Hör, March 27. The disc was recorded with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Asva) at Avast! and Aleph Studios, and the music veers back and forth between ominous atmospheric sound waves and scalding, mid-paced death metal. ... The third album by Norwegian black-metal band Furze may not be heaviest thing you've ever heard, but surely you've never seen a disc with a longer name. UTD: Beneath the Odd-Edge Sounds to the Twilight Contract of the Black Fascist/ The Wealth of the Penetration in the Abstract Paradigmas of Satan will be released February 20 and include two songs featuring Satyricon and 1349 drummer Frost: "A Life Above My Sabbath" and "Beneath the Wings of the Black Vomit Above." ... "It'll be nothing too fancy or cerebral because, well, that's not what we do," drummer Bryan Cox said. "The goal for this thing is have something entertaining and fun to watch." Open Fire was recorded at the Etching Tin Studios in Richmond with engineer Ian Whalen (Lamb of God, Rah Bras) and will be the group's first recording to feature singer Kyle Thomas. ...

Do some metal fans — and even some metal bands — take themselves too seriously? The Haunted's Peter Dolving seems to think so, which is why he's been logging on to his band's MySpace page in recent weeks. It's there that the singer airs some of his thoughts on matters like politics and communism, and where he's been trading barbs with some of his cantankerous fans.

Dolving enjoys screwing with people too — another reason why he's been opening heated dialogues with those Haunted fans who don't agree with his various opinions. He could just ignore the insults and not respond. But, "It's fun watching people get really upset over bullsh--," the singer explained. "It's like when you were in school, and you'd get in trouble all the time because you'd always f--- with the wrong people, or you'd get laid with the wrong teacher's daughter. The things I write in my blogs are just my thoughts — they're things I'd like to get out of me. I usually get more positive responses than I do negative responses. But when these people get pissed, it amuses me."

Back in 2005, Dolving even tried to get a rise out of some of the bands he'd spent the summer with as part of Ozzfest.

"We wrote this one song that we actually ended up recording and played before our sets on the last three weeks of Ozzfest," he recalled. "It was called 'Three Random Words,' and instead of lyrics, I just took all these band names — As I Lay Dying and It Dies Today and Every Time I Die, blah, blah, blah — and I just kind of yelled them out. I took the Ozzfest lineups from the last couple of years, and I just sang those band names all the way through. The music was sort of this spoof on metalcore, and we just cracked up. The twisted thing is, when we were playing it, people [in the crowd] started nodding and getting into it."

Of course, "Three Random Words" didn't make the final track list for the Haunted's forthcoming LP, The Dead Eye. But the band did write much of the effort, the follow-up to 2004's rEVOLVEr, while on 2005's Ozzfest. The album hits stores on Halloween.

"We had a very defined image of what we wanted to do, but we had no idea what that was going to sound like," Dolving said. "But we'd know it when we found it. So, when we started writing the material, we did so without making any kind of judgment about it whatsoever. Everything went into the box, and we came up with some really, really weird stuff. We came up with some stuff that was terribly bad and some stuff that was just funny.

"It's one of those records that sort of sums up a lot of the stuff that we'd previously done — not only in this band, but in the bands we'd been part of before," he continued. "It puts everything in perspective I think, and it's going to be fun to make the next record, because we finally know ourselves as a band. This is a defining work for us. We always have been an evolving band, and we've never made one record that sounds the same."

The Haunted plan to tour for the next two years or so in support of The Dead Eye. Next month, they'll hit the road with Lacuna Coil, Belphegor and Asesino as part of Glenn Danzig's Blackest of the Black Tour, which kicks off November 17 in Seattle and wraps November 30 in Santa Cruz, California. In the spring, Dolving said the Haunted will go out for a headlining run of the U.S., with two support acts. While none have been confirmed yet, his wish list includes Planes Mistaken for Stars and These Arms Are Snakes.

As for the whole Ozzfest experience, Dolving said it was a mixed bag for the Haunted. It took some getting used to, and the singer's not so sure the tour influenced album sales. But it did bring his band closer together.

"It was a learning experience for us," he said. "We're just five ugly dudes from Sweden who play rock music, and everyone hypes [the Ozzfest] up to be much more than it really is. The good thing is, there's a bunch of fun, rock and roll bullsh-- going on, and it's crazy and utterly ridiculous. There are always some downsides to something as hyper-commercial as Ozzfest, but it did bring us together as a band more. ... We've been a band for 10 years, and we're more into it now than when we first started out."

The rest of the week's metal news:

Shadows Fall have pulled out of their previously announced tour with Killswitch Engage, Bury Your Dead and 2Cents, to afford them more time in the studio as they continue to craft their forthcoming Atlantic Records debut. "We are all very disappointed that we will not be able to hit the road with our friends in Killswitch Engage and Bury Your Dead," read a statement from frontman Brian Fair. "Originally, we had hoped to complete the recording of our new album in time for the beginning of the tour on November 9 [in Charlotte, North Carolina], but now it appears that will not be possible. New ideas have continued to surface and push the songs into new directions that we have to pursue. Making the best album possible is our number one priority and something we must focus on one hundred percent at this time. We sincerely apologize to all the people that planned on coming to see us at these shows, but our absence is no reason not to go and support this tour." All That Remains have been enlisted to take the Shad's place, between the tour's launch and the November 26 stop in Spokane, Washington. The trek's scheduled to wrap December 20 in Providence, Rhode Island. ...

On November 21, Rob Halford will debut the first new Halford song in more than four years, "Forgotten Generation," on iTunes. The metal god wrote the tune and another new cut, "Drop Out," with the Halford band this year during downtime from working with Judas Priest on their upcoming album Nostradamus. "We just thought it would be nice to offer fans an earful of new Halford stuff and let everybody know we're still around," he said. Both new tracks will be available on Halford: Metal God Essentials - Volume 1, which comes out November 28. The album will contain 15 songs spanning Halford's solo career and will also be available exclusively through iTunes. Also on November 28, Halford will release the entire Halford catalog (Resurrection, Live Insurrection and Crucible), plus the Fight demo K5 the War of Words Demos. "We love iTunes," Halford said. "It's a tremendous format and they're really looking after the Metal God in a really great way." ...

Experimental San Francisco metal legends Neurosis are at home writing their new album and plan to head to Electrical Audio studio in Chicago to record with Steve Albini at the end of November or early December. "[We are] forging some strange, noisy psychedelic territory that is pretty disturbing," guitarist and singer Steve Von Till said. The new album is tentatively scheduled for May. Neurosis will take some time off from writing at the end of November to play shows in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle on November 24 and 25, respectively. ... Freiburg, Germany, thrash band Fear My Thoughts will release their fifth album, Vulcanus, January 23. The disc was recorded in Denmark and will be the band's first album for Century Media. ... Greek traditional-metal war horses Firewind will release their new album Allegiance in North America on January 23. The album, which came out in Europe in July, is the band's first to feature new singer Apollo Papathanasio (ex-Majestic, Time Requiem) and drummer Mark Cross (ex-Helloween, Metalium). The band shot a video for the single "Falling to Pieces" earlier this year with director Patric Ullaeus at the Revolver Ranch in Sweden and in New York. ...

Freddy, frontman for the Taiwanese black-metal band Chthonic, will make his U.S. public-speaking debut November 3 in New York at the CMJ Music Marathon panel "From Glam to Death: Metal Subgenre Feasts." He'll be plugging the band's first U.S. release, Seediq Bale, which came out October 3. Influenced by Emperor and early Dimmu Borgir, Chthonic play symphonic metal arrangements embellished with baleful melodies on the erhu, a two-string violin from the Far East. But while Chthonic are inspired by Scandinavian bands, their music rails, not against Christianity, but against the Han Chinese, who usurped ancient Taiwanese tradition some 300 years ago. "When we play black metal, that's because we are angry about some outside culture that invades our country," Freddy said. "That's the same situation with many bands in Scandinavia, so that's what we have in common with them." ...

New York tech-noise maniacs Car Bomb have signed to Relapse Records and are working on their debut album. In addition, the band will pair up with Burnt by the Sun for a split 7-inch that will feature the Car Bomb tracks "M^6" and "Pieces of You." A video for "M^6" was recently shot by director Jeremy Jackson (Calico System). ... Avant-metal band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are recording their still-untitled third studio album at Tiny Telephone Recording in San Francisco with producer Joel Hamilton (Red Sparowes, Unsane). The follow-up to 2004's Of Natural History is scheduled for release in early 2007. ... Priestess have been added to the bill for Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society's trek with Black Stone Cherry, which runs from Friday (October 27) in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, through December 8 in Los Angeles. ... Shai Hulud, 100 Demons, Since the Flood and One Dead Three Wounded will hit the road together next month for a 16-date jaunt that launches November 1 in Indiana, Pennsylvania, with dates booked through November 21 in Augusta, Georgia. ... Maryland death-metallers Decapitate have reunited six years after calling it quits. The band will perform November 10 in Springfield, Virginia, with Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist and Dying Fetus, and is said to be working on new material for a forthcoming studio LP. ...

Speaking of Springfield, Dark Funeral, Enslaved and Abigail Williams will commence their Candlelight II: Phoenix Rising tour there January 9. The trek runs through February 8 in Quebec. ... The Accursed's Seasons of the Scythe will land in stores on Halloween. The disc will feature a dozen tracks, including "Fire of 1000 Cries," "Aftermath of Sorrow" and "The Black Thrash." The Accursed have booked several East Coast dates for next month, including stops in Dover, New Hampshire, on November 1 and West Hartford, Connecticut, on November 9. ... Baltimore metal act Swarm of the Lotus will split following their final show on November 1 at Ottobar in their hometown. Goatwhore will also be on the bill, along with several other local acts. According to a statement from the band, "After years of mostly struggle to even exist, [we] have come to the realization that it has always been somewhat of a broken project trying desperately to push forward. With all the lineup changes, relearning processes, constant bad luck on the road, and the general one-step-forward, two-steps-back black hole that the band sank into, it has been hard to even recognize who and what exactly we are." ... The lineup for the 831 Dudecore Halloween Bash, which is set for Saturday at the 418 Project in Santa Cruz, California, has been unveiled. The concert will feature Arsonists Get All the Girls, Stars Are Falling, Apiary and Shotgun Facelift, among others.

Before German deathcore demons Heaven Shall Burn wrote even a single note for Deaf to Our Prayers, guitarist Maik Weichert decided that the outing should be more intense and more menacing than 2004's Antigone. Weichert said he believes they've accomplished that aim.

"Most bands don't want to do the same record twice but want to have the same success with the record," he explained of the band's fifth studio offering, which landed in stores this week. "So they don't change so much about it. You never change a winning team. But we wanted to do a more brutal album. I guess a lot of people expected us to go more commercial, but we did the opposite: We played the most brutal songs at the beginning of the record, so it's like a punch in the face from the very beginning. We wanted to show people from the first moment that we didn't wimp out."

"More brutal" doesn't always mean "better," but Heaven Shall Burn are confident in the LP, and Weichert said he'd be shocked if the band's fans were somehow disappointed with Deaf.

"We expect that everyone who has been into us will love this record," he proclaimed. "We didn't betray our style or change the good things we had. We just tried to make it even harder, which is what our fans expect. We just hope for things — we don't expect things. You will never be disappointed if you just hope for things."

Weichert's got a lot of hopes for his band. He'd like to see Heaven Shall Burn's American fanbase swell and knows that it's going to take touring. So either this winter or spring, Heaven Shall Burn will embark on their first U.S. headlining run — the exact details are still being ironed out, he added.

There's always Ozzfest too. But he's not so sure the annual metal extravaganza would be a good fit for Heaven Shall Burn.

"I wouldn't say we'd never play it, but I see that stuff as some kind of mass product, and smaller tours, I think, are a lot better," he reasoned. "On the other hand, Ozzfest is such a legendary tour, and gives people an opportunity to see a lot of bands. So you have to see, as a band, how it is for you — whether you want to do it or not. I'd rather play just a few shows and be 100 percent for those shows. When a band plays 300 shows, sometimes you can see that those bands are just bored and exhausted. I don't like that. We'd rather go on tour with 20, 30 shows and give 100 percent every night than go on tour and waste ourselves."

Heaven Shall Burn will soon release a video for "Stay the Course," the album's first single. The mostly animated clip should be finished in the next week or so. "It's about writers and artists who have to go into exile," Weichert said. "It deals with that situation, of someone who has to leave his home and go somewhere for some higher end, and it's about missing your home."

The band also has a live DVD in the works, which was filmed during last year's Hell on Earth Tour, which Heaven Shall Burn co-headlined with As I Lay Dying and Evergreen Terrace.

"We decided to press the whole show — just this single show — on the DVD, and not do any post-production on it, so you can hear the mistakes, our stupid quotes, the screams from the crowd," Weichert said. "You'll get the feeling that you're right in this sweaty, tiny club, having fun with us. It brings the atmosphere of a Heaven Shall Burn show to your DVD player."

The rest of the week's metal news:

Vinnie Paul will co-mix the upcoming album by Seventh Void, a band featuring Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly. Guitarist Matt Brown (ex-Supermassiv) is currently recording the group's yet-untitled debut, which is due in early 2007. The group also features bassist Hank Hell (Inhuman). Previews of three tracks — "Heaven Is Gone," "Shadow on Me" and "The End of Time" — can be heard at www.myspace.com/seventhvoid. The band recently opened two dates of a reunion tour by Carnivore, the band fronted by Type O Negative singer Pete Steele. ... Shadows Fall are getting down to business and have commenced pre-production for their upcoming, still-untitled major-label debut. According to drummer Jason Bittner, the band's been in full-speed-ahead mode for two weeks now and will be working on the disc with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver). "Nick was pretty stoked with our material and ambitions, and the band was extremely excited and impressed by Nick's ideas — let alone his never-ending enthusiasm. We put a solid six hours in the first day just jamming and revamping. Later on that night brought a well-deserved evening at the bar discussing what we would do once we got in the studio. We can't stop talking about how much we think Nick is helping to add some more dimension to this band that we never thought existed. But don't start worrying yet — we're not cutting our hair and selling out. This record is still going to be heavy as hell." ...

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil has contributed guitar work to a collaboration between American drone kings Sunn O))) and Japanese sludge masters Boris. Thayil, who appears on the song "Blood Swamp," also wrote the liner notes for the album, which comes out October 31 and is called Altar. A vinyl-only version includes the bonus track "Her Lips Were Wet With Venom," which features Earth frontman Dylan Carlson. Other guests include Joe Preston (High on Fire, Earth, Melvins), Steve Moore (Earth) and Jesse Sykes, and other songs include "Etna," "N.L.T." and "Akuma No Kuma." ... More bands have been added to the lineup for the forthcoming Saints and Sinners Festival, set to unfold October 28-29 at the Asbury Park Convention Hall Complex in — where else? — Asbury Park, New Jersey. All That Remains, God Forbid, Nora and Folly will join previously announced performers Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, Every Time I Die, the Number 12 Looks Like You, A Life Once Lost and Full Blown Chaos. ...

The fifth studio album by Swedish thrash band the Haunted, The Dead Eye, is scheduled for release on October 31. The disc was recorded in Denmark at Antfarm Studios with producer Tue Madsen (Himsa, Kataklysm) and is the follow-up to the band's well-received 2004 album, rEVOLVEr. "This album is simply more diverse, dynamic and heavy as f---," singer Peter Dolving said. "Look forward to an album we're all extremely proud of." ... Guitarist Derek Vasconi, a founding member of Pennsylvanian metallers From a Second Story Window, has left the band — in fact, he's been out of the group for weeks. While there's been no explanation for Vasconi's departure, the band has revealed that he bailed back in mid-August. ... The release date for Swedish black-metal specialists Marduk's upcoming DVD, "Blood Puke Salvation," has been pushed back from September 4 to September 25. The effort will feature over 90 minutes of live material captured in Tilburg, Holland, and Antwerpen, Belgium, nearly two years ago. ...

Cradle of Filth bassist Dave Pybus and My Dying Bride singer Aaron Stainthorpe have contributed to the debut album by textural metal band Angtoria. The disc, God Has a Plan for Us All, was recorded at Sidelake Studios in Sundsvall, Sweden, and comes out October 17. ... Play bass? Want to be in a band with ex-Fear Factory/ current Asesino axeman Dino Cazares? Well, today's your lucky day. Cazares needs a bassist for a new project he's forming with Vital Remains drummer Tim Yeung and Vext frontman Tommy Cummings. Auditions will be held September 16-17 at Downtown Rehearsal in Los Angeles. Potential bassists should be older than 25, have tour experience and "long hair (at least shoulder-length)." To audition, contact Cazares through his MySpace page — and you might want to learn Fear Factory's track "Self Bias Resistor" while you're at it. The band will begin work on its debut LP next week, with a 2007 release planned. ... Hypocrisy's Andreas Holma has quit the band. According to a post on the band's Web site, the guitarist had claimed he isn't "motivated anymore" and is tired of touring. He plans to work on his own project but has not talked at length about it. In the meantime, the band will be touring with Darkane's Klas Ideberg on its upcoming tour with Fear Factory, Suffocation and Decapitated, which launches October 26 in San Francisco. ...

Lovehatehero have entered a Santa Ana, California, studio with Motörhead producer Cameron Webb to record their second album for Ferret Music. The yet-untitled album is scheduled for release in February. "This record will be very varied, with some heavier stuff, especially the guitar parts," singer Pierrick Berube said. "They are way more insane, with way more shred and a lot of good solos." ... It Dies Today have shot a video for the song "Sacred Heart," the first single from their new album Sirens, which comes out October 17. The video was shot in downtown Los Angeles by director Salzy (Mudvayne, Megadeth) and documents singer Nicholas Brooks' urge to kill his former unfaithful lover, whose name just happens to be Sirens. What cruel parents she must have. ... Betrayed have thrown in the towel, not even two months after the release of their Equal Vision debut, Substance. "Due to members feeling like they were compromising their integrity, Betrayed is no longer a band," reads a statement on the demise. "Our final show was played on August 27 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Thanks to all who supported us." ... Michigan quartet See You Next Tuesday has signed to Ferret Music and is getting ready to enter the studio with Andreas Magnusson, who has previously worked with the Black Dahlia Murder and Scarlet. The bandmembers refer to their music as "brutal music for brutal dudes" and admit that the group started as a joke in 2004. "I originally was playing bass and just decided to pick up the guitar on a whim," guitarist/ main songwriter Drew Slavik said in a statement. "Our drummer is a guitar player and our vocalist was given the job because he had cool facial hair." See You Next Tuesday's debut album is scheduled for release early next year.

The only thing Eyes of Fire frontman Dan Kaufman knows about the video for "It All Dies Today" — the first single off the Orange County ambient-metal quintet's sophomore disc, Prisons — is that it's "f---ing bizarre."

Of course, there's an underlying plotline to the clip — girl moves into creepy apartment building, deranged spirits haunt girl, girl loses mind. But Kaufman said Gary Smithson's warped vision is responsible for the entire video — so don't ask him to explain, say, the one scene involving a collection of old men gathered at a birthday bash for a pampered feline.

"I'm just glad there's not a whole lot of us in it," he joked. "You can see we're playing and tell who we are. We're in there when we need to be I guess. But when I watch it, all I can think is 'The Grudge' meets 'The Shining' with a David Lynch twist."

Kaufman said much of the video's imagery was inspired by the paintings of Francis Bacon. Smithson — who has worked with Exodus, the Eagles of Death Metal and High on Fire — is a fan of the English artist. Kaufman — who, with bassist Matt Fisher, spent much of the late '90s in Mindrot — added that he's hoping the disturbing clip will help Eyes of Fire keep their collective asses in a van, traveling from one city to the next.

Playing a steady stream of shows has been something of a problem for the band in the past, according to Kaufman. Eleven months after Eyes of Fire dropped their 2004 debut, Ashes to Embers, they secured their first national tour — an opening slot on Glenn Danzig's Blackest of the Black run.

"We were bidding on tours left and right [but] for some reason nothing came together," he explained. "We were in the process of recording Prisons with [producer] Matt [Bayles, who has worked with Mastodon and Isis] when Danzig got a hold of us for the tour, and so we had to relearn all of the old songs. It was stressful. As soon as we got done recording, we had a week and a half to practice before we had to head to St. Louis, where the tour started. And we played with Danzig, Trivium, Apocalyptica and Kataklysm for a month."

Eyes of Fire's headlining run with Losa in the support slot wrapped up a few weeks ago, and now they're waiting to see what fate will hand them next tourwise. Kaufman said it's possible they'll head out with one of the bands on Roadrunner's roster, and they've expressed interest in participating in Sounds of the Underground or Gigantour 2. "We just want to stay on the road for as long as we can," he said. "Being a band like us, we're not going to get radio play. You just need to be in everybody's face and be out there."

The rest of the week's metal news:
Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society have signed with Roadrunner Records and are working with producer Michael Beinhorn (Social Distortion, Soundgarden) on Shot to Hell, the follow-up to last year's Mafia. "After spending a lifetime as Wylde Z. Coyote, I guess it was just a matter of time before I'd catch the Roadrunner," Wylde joked. ... Queensrÿche will begin their 2006 tour August 26 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Dates run through October 25 in Billings, Montana. The band's new disc, Operation: Mindcrime II — which picks up where 1988's epic Operation: Mindcrime left off — will be released April 4. ... Three classic Motörhead albums — 1983's Another Perfect Day, 1986's Orgasmatron and 1987's Rock 'N' Roll — will be reissued as expanded double-disc deluxe editions March 28. Each will include bonus cuts, B-sides, live tracks and other rarities. ... Former Deep Purple and Black Sabbath singer Ian Gillan will release Gillan's Inn April 18. Not only will the disc feature songs from the singer's past, it will also showcase guests from many of the bands with which he recorded. Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi plays on "Trashed," Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott contributes to "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers riffs away on "Bluesy Blue Sea." Ronnie James Dio, Joe Satriani, and Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paice also play on the disc. ...

Swedish thrash band the Haunted — who survived last summer's Ozzfest — will enter a Danish studio in May to start recording their still-untitled LP, which is being eyed for a late October release. Tue Madsen (Aborted, Panzerchrist) will produce the disc. "We're going forward," frontman Peter Dolving wrote on the band's Web site. "This is exciting and scary. So far we've got 12 songs that are evolving smoothly. ... I'd say the stuff is much heavier than previous records; I get a feeling like [At the Gates] meets King Crimson. It's hard to describe, but personally I think we're coming up with some heavy sh--. Sometimes I feel like, 'Whoa! This is turning into a Pink Floyd record for the dysfunctional.' " ... Several bands have recorded covers of Metallica classics for Remastered, a forthcoming compilation that pays tribute to the band's Master of Puppets — which marks its 20th anniversary this year. The disc, commissioned by Kerrang! magazine, will include Machine Head ("Battery"), Trivium ("Master of Puppets"), Bullet for My Valentine ("Welcome Home [Sanitarium]"), Chimaira ("Disposable Heroes"), Mastodon ("Orion") and Funeral for a Friend ("Damage, Inc."). ... Buffalo, New York, metalcore dudes Every Time I Die plan to shoot a video for "The New Black," which appears on their Gutter Phenomenon — and they need some warm bodies, ages 18 and up, to serve as extras. The shoot's set for April 6 in Los Angeles. Interested? Send the band a recent snapshot of yourself, as well as a scanned copy of your driver's license, to etidvideo@aol.com. ...

Swedish grindcore vets Regurgitate are in the studio working on the follow-up to their 2003 disc, Deviant. They hope to have the record completed by the end of April and release it in the fall.

On Tuesday, the Haunted held a band meeting in Fort Worth, Texas, and discussed the band's future on the Meshuggah, God Forbid and Mnemic tour — which hits Denver's Ogden Theatre on Friday (October 21). Frontman Peter Dolving was dealing with some intense pain; he'd pinched a nerve in his back the week before and hadn't been the same since. Would the band recruit a fill-in for Dolving or would it drop off the tour?

Luckily for the Haunted's fans, Dolving was treated for the pain, and the Ozzfest 2005 vets pushed on. For guitarist Patrik Jensen, it was important that the band see this trek through. "We've been seeing lots of Ozzfest T-shirts, and on that tour we only did 20-minute sets," he said; on this run, the band's playing a full 45. "We owe it to our fans."

And the Haunted means that. The band's prepping a headlining tour of the U.S. that'll kick off in mid-February called the Bad Seeds Tour; Jensen said the guys haven't decided on openers just yet but were considering a number of bands.

"We've done so many opening tours on this album [2004's rEVOLVEr] that we need to come back to the U.S. and treat everybody to a headlining set, playing an hour and 15, hour and 20 minutes instead of playing just the 30- and 40-minute shows," said Jensen, who's also known for his work with Witchery. The tour will last five weeks and will be the band's first U.S. headliner in over two years.

Despite the short sets, Ozzfest was certainly a memorable experience for Jensen. "It was cool hanging out with all the bands and getting to know all the people. Ozzfest is like a small community, traveling all across America," he said. "And I never expected the members of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath would be in the backstage catering area and that I'd be able to talk to them." Still, he doesn't expect to see the Haunted ever returning to the package tour unless they were offered a better slot.

"We've done it once," he reasoned. "It would be better to maybe do the Gigantour and play in front of a new crowd again."

After this current jaunt, the Haunted will head overseas for a European trip with God Dethroned and God Forbid. In between the December 17 end of that tour and the start of Bad Seeds, Jensen said the band will write material for a still-untitled rEVOLVEr follow-up.

The rest of the week's metal news:

Mudvayne, whose "Forget to Remember" is the lead track on the "Saw II" soundtrack, will play a midnight set at the film's screening party in Las Vegas October 27. "Saw II" star and former New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg will also attend — though a duet of the teen-pop band's hit "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" seems unlikely. The soundtrack comes out Tuesday and also features remixes of songs by Marilyn Manson, Queens of the Stone Age and Puscifer (Tool's Maynard James Keenan with ex-Nine Inch Nails guitarist Danny Lohner), plus songs from the Used, Sevendust, Papa Roach, Skinny Puppy, Bloodsimple, Revolting Cocks, Buckethead and others. ... Songs from Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Trivium, Chimaira, Soilwork and others will be featured on the forthcoming "Rainbow Six: Lockdown" soundtrack. ... Dutch doom specialists Orphanage split this week. "From recent internal discussions, it appeared that there was too much irritation and a lack of mutual trust to be able to make a new Orphanage product by the high-quality standards that the band has been known for throughout the years," the band said in a statement. ...

Portland, Oregon, brutal sludge band Facedowninsh-- are nearly finished writing their third album, Npon. The disc will be recorded in November at Pontchartrain Studios in Durham, North Carolina, and should be out by March. ... Static-X will hit the road with Ill Niño and Opiate for the Masses from November 9 in Tempe, Arizona, through November 26 in Fargo, North Dakota. The new single from the band's current album, Start a War, will be "Dirthouse." ... Dokken, whose forthcoming, tentatively titled album Lightning Strikes Again should fall sometime next year, have rolled out a slew of new tour dates, the first being November 30 in Las Vegas. The band will hit Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle and Salt Lake City before things wind down December 20 in Solana Beach, California. ... The Deep Purple DVD "Live in Concert 72/73," which features the band's powerhouse lineup — singer Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice — comes out November 15. The DVD features nine songs in black and white from a 1972 show in Denmark and three in color from a 1973 concert in New York. Tracks include "Space Truckin'," "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water." ...

Brazil thrash band Sepultura will release separate versions of the CD and DVD Live in Sao Paulo on November 8. Both formats capture a show from April 3, 2005, that spanned the band's career from 1985 to 2003. The DVD features a second disc with a documentary of the band and the videos "Mindwar," "Bullet the Blue Sky" and "Choke." ... A Motörhead double DVD "Stage Fright" will be released on January 10. The first disc is a concert which was filmed in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 2004 and the second features clips of soundchecks, backstage footage and a documentary about the band's road crew. ... Swedish death-metal band Darkane will embark on their first-ever U.S. tour, supporting Fear Factory and Strapping Young Lad from October 28 in Lawrence, Kansas, through December 5 in Vancouver. Soilwork and It Dies Today are also on the bill. Darkane's fourth album, Layers of Lies, came out in July. ... Kreator and Napalm Death will be bringing A Perfect Murder and the Undying out with them on a 34-date U.S. tour set to kick off February 21 in Quebec; dates run through March 25 in West Springfield, Virginia. ... Oakland, California, stoner-grunge band Totimoshi are working on their third album, which is being produced by Helmet frontman Page Hamilton. The record is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2006. ...

Brutal Cornhuskers Cellador will hit Tampa's Mana Studio on December 16 to start working on their debut disc. Erik Rutan (Soilent Green, the Absence) will produce the effort, which is set for a late spring 2006 release. ... Finnish stoner-rockers Mannhai will begin working on their forthcoming opus next month. Look for the as-yet-untitled disc to include "Fuzzmaster," "Downers" and "Better Hate Yesterday." ... Black-metal legends Marduk will "unleash upon mankind" 17 live cuts recorded during the band's recent Deathmarch Tour in the form of Warschau: Dance of Death. The band intends to produce just 10,000 copies of the disc; no word yet on a potential release date. ... Several bands have been confirmed for Thrashtoberfest 2005, which will take over North Six in Brooklyn, New York, on November 4. Deceased, Thine Eyes Bleed, Sun Descends, Dimentianon, Sunlord and the original Rigor Mortis lineup (frontman Bruce Corbitt, guitarist Mike Scaccia, bassist Casey Orr and drummer Harden Harrison) have all signed on to participate. ... Massachusetts hardcore act Think I Care will hit Atomic Studios late next month with Dean Baltulonis (No Warning, the Promise) to start recording their next disc, which should drop this spring.
