Snoop Dogg struck a plea deal on Thursday (September 20) in his weapon-possession case stemming from an arrest at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, in September 2006, The Associated Press reports. The rapper (real name: Calvin Broadus) was sentenced to 160 hours of community service and three years' probation, and ordered to make a $10,000 charitable donation. In the September incident, Snoop was found carrying a collapsible baton — while he claimed it was for a video shoot, authorities considered it to be a dangerous weapon. If he doesn't violate the law again, his felony conviction will be reduced to a misdemeanor after one year. "We are very pleased with the outcome," his attorney Donald Etra told AP. "He wants to get on with his life." ...

Game (real name: Jayceon Taylor) was given a conditional discharge on Thursday in the case involving the rapper allegedly impersonating a police officer in New York in November, AP reports. Per Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Marc Whiten's order, if Game is not arrested again within six months, the misdemeanor criminal-impersonation charge will be dismissed. Claiming innocence, Game had rejected previous plea deals that would have kept him out of jail in exchange for a guilty plea. He was arrested after allegedly telling a cab driver he was an undercover cop and instructing him to run red lights, but Game denied that claim and instead argued that the driver decided to run the red lights on his own. Game's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, pointed out Game's facial tattoo and said it was doubtful the driver would have believed the rapper to be a police officer. "I've never seen a cop with writing all over his face," Game said. ...

First Dr. Dre makes an appearance at the VMAs, and now he's got an interview in the latest issue of GQ — maybe Detox really is on the way. The notoriously reclusive producer appears in the 50th anniversary issue of the men's magazine and, for the first time, goes on record about the rift between his Aftermath artists 50 Cent and Game. "It was definitely a conscious thing," he said of his decision to not speak up in the past about the feud. "This is something that's between labelmates. I've said, 'When you guys are ready to make some music, let's get down. Let's get in the studio.' All that other stuff, that's not for me. This is something they created, so it's something they have to handle. I don't feel like I have to choose a side." Dre also revealed that, at the behest of Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine, he once asked Game not to dis 50 during a New York show. "I knew that this one wasn't gonna go away," he said. "I know these guys, and I know nobody is gonna back down." ...

Gerard Way had some kind words to say to the University of Maine's campus newspaper, The Maine Campus, about Bon Jovi — his band, My Chemical Romance, will open for the rock legends October 25-26 as part of the christening of Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center. "I grew up as a Bon Jovi fan. Whenever you're dealing with Bon Jovi or Springsteen, it's just a great honor and at that point; it doesn't really matter what genre you play. It really just kind of matters that you're all from New Jersey." Way also had a thing or two to say about MCR being labeled "emo," although his words on that subject weren't so kind. "Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours. I think emo is f---ing garbage, it's bullsh--. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo. All I can say is anyone actually listening to the records, put the records next to each other and listen to them and there's actually no similarities. I think emo's a pile of sh--." ...

Yung Joc will perform at the 100th anniversary of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity's Cornell University chapter, according to the campus' paper, The Cornell Daily Sun. The October 12 concert, to be held at the Zeta Beta Tau house, will serve to benefit the Children's Miracle Network, an alliance of hospitals for children. ... Jennifer Lopez has a new album on the brain — Brave, which drops October 9 — but that hasn't stopped her from hooking up with Carlos Santana for a new slice set to be featured on the rock icon's Ultimate Santana collection, due October 16. Baby Bash also surfaces on "This Boy's Fire," which was partly produced by Sean Garrett. Two more previously unreleased collabos — "Into the Night" with Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and "The Game of Love" with Tina Turner — also beef up the best-of disc. ...

Missy Elliott posted a teaser on her Web site announcing that she's back in the lab cooking up a new album that she hopes to release in the spring. No other information was given on the album, which would be her first since 2005's The Cookbook. ... As huge as the Kanye West/ 50 Cent album showdown appeared to be, LP sales are still down 9 percent compared to the same week last year, Billboard reports. ... Tired of seeing Kanye West all over the place? Too bad. The recent Gradu-ee will perform September 29 on "Saturday Night Live." Spoon will play on the show the following week. ...

Sammy Hagar says he wouldn't have toured with the reunited Van Halen without founding bassist Michael Anthony, who has been replaced with Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang Van Halen, for the band's reunion tour with singer David Lee Roth. According to the Web site for Internet radio station KNAC, Hagar said, "I wouldn't do it without Mike. ... If Eddie wants to play with his son, fine. I love my son too, but I got him a different job. ... I just think the fans are gonna walk away with a little bit of a disappointment because Mike's a big part of that band." ... In related news, Van Halen have tossed three more California dates onto their much-anticipated reunion tour, which kicks off September 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The band will hit Fresno on November 29, Anaheim on December 18 and will now bring the jaunt to a close in Oakland on December 22. ...

The inaugural Girlfrenzy concert scheduled for October 27 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California, has been postponed. Though organizers have not given any reason for the show's cancellation, they said in a post on the show's MySpace page that it will be rescheduled for 2008. The show was to feature Avril Lavigne, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow and Colbie Caillat. ... After three years, Scratch magazine is calling it a day. The hip-hop mag's final issue features 50 Cent and Timbaland on the cover and is due out at the end of September. No reason was given for the magazine's shuttering. ...

The 10th anniversary edition of Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp will get an extra dose of power this year with appearances from Slash, Who singer Roger Daltrey, Vince Neil and Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh. Also on the roster for the event, to be held November 7-11 in Las Vegas, are Cream bassist Jack Bruce, as well as members of Iron Maiden, Yes, Steely Dan, Bad Company, Megadeth and Winger. ... Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will give Asbury Park, New Jersey, fans a sneak preview of their upcoming tour in support of their upcoming album Magic, which is due October 2. The Boss has scheduled a pair of benefit shows for Monday and Tuesday night at the Asbury Park Convention Hall, with the $100 tickets selling out almost immediately when they went on sale Thursday morning (September 20), according to the promoter. ...

Gene Simmons, glam-rocker, reality-TV star, magazine entrepreneur and ... science-fiction author? You read it right — the Kiss frontman has penned the first installment of a planned sci-fi series, "Zipper," for release in November. The heavily illustrated book tells the story of a drone soldier from another planet who "begins to question his purpose and contemplate his autonomy ... he realizes his own capacity for individualism and wishes to explore it further," according to Simmons' Web site. ... Hardcore heroes Snapcase are getting back together for a one-off show to benefit Callum Robbins, the son of Jawbox's J. Robbins who is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy. The gig will go down at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, on November 24 and also feature 108 and Triple Threat. The show is being organized by 108 member and author Norman Brannon, whose "The Anti-Matter Anthology: A 1990s Post-Punk & Hardcore Reader" — a tome revolving around the defunct fanzine — is due in stores November 6. ...

Gina Gershon can't stop the rock. The "Showgirls" actress, whose 2004 reality show chronicled her attempted crossover into the world of rock and roll, will preview songs from her upcoming album In Search of Cleo during a residency at the New York club the Box every Sunday and Monday night in October. Backed by a five-piece band and three dancers, Gershon will unveil the suite of songs — all of which she wrote or co-wrote — that tell the true story of the search and recovery of her lost cat, Cleo. According to a press release, the 10 songs focus "on the literal and metaphoric experience of the search, not just for Cleo, but for love," using "biting humor, country, blues and jazz-influenced singing and a splash of sexy."

So a judge orders Britney Spears to submit to random drug tests and abstain from alcohol, and what does she apparently do next? Goes partying! The singer reportedly went clubbing into the wee hours Tuesday night in West Hollywood, California, hitting both Winston's Bar & Grill and the Hyde Lounge — with a flurry of paparazzi on her tail, of course. Observers told People magazine that the singer was brought shots at Hyde, though it's unclear whether she actually drank them. Meanwhile, Spears has changed legal counsel again. On Monday, her divorce attorney Laura Wasser had stepped down to be replaced by Marci Levine, and on Wednesday (September 19), Levine prepared to step down to be replaced by Sorrell Trope. Trope's office told MTV News on Wednesday that the firm was in the process of being retained by Spears and anticipated that the necessary paperwork would be signed and taken care of by the end of the day. ..

In other Britney news, Justin Timberlake talked a bit about the singer Wednesday on "Oprah." When asked what he thinks is "going on" with her, Timberlake said, "I don't know, to be honest with you. I haven't spoken to her in years. I mean, there's no ill will — I have nothing but love for her. It's funny because we dated each other at a time ... wow, I haven't talked about this in a long time. It's interesting. ... We were teenagers, you know? I think that's basically the best way to describe what happened to us. I think she's a great person, and I don't know her as well as I did. ... What I do know about her is she has a huge heart, and she is a great person." ...

Talk about adding insult to injury. After pounding 50 Cent in the first week of their album showdown, Kanye West has bested his rival a second time by clinching the Music of Black Origin Award for Best Hip Hop artist. Amy Winehouse scored the Best U.K. Female prize, surprisingly, while Rihanna nabbed Best International Act honors, and Ne-Yo's "Because of You" earned Best R&B Title and Best Song. ...

If you caught Ashlee Simpson giving her yet-untitled album a test-drive at the VMAs earlier this month, you probably noticed the Cure's Robert Smith didn't make it onto the LP. In July, Smith voiced doubt about the supposed collabo taking place, and while Simpson told MTV News during her "Chicago" run in London late last year that "To work with Robert Smith would be an honor," she recently told Rolling Stone, "I am a huge fan, but would never expect to write with Robert Smith from the Cure." Boyfriend Pete Wentz also doesn't appear on the November disc — "We both keep our music separate from each other," she told Rolling Stone — however Timbaland, the Neptunes, Kenna and Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy did make the cut. ...

Game better be game to take on a new lawsuit — an Indian music-and-film company is suing him and Timbaland over "Put You on the Game." The song was featured on the Compton, California, rapper's Aftermath debut, The Documentary, and produced by Timbaland. According to documents obtained by MTV News, Saregama India — which filed a similar copyright-infringement suit in 2002 against then-Aftermath artist Truth Hurts — claims the duo used the song without its permission and also cites a number of additional parties, including Aftermath Entertainment, G-Unit Records and producer Danjahandz, who co-produced the track. The company is suing for a yet-undetermined sum. ... But everything isn't so dire these days for Timbo — the super-producer is soaping up for a scheduled appearance on an upcoming episode of "One Life to Live" scheduled to air October 9. He will perform two songs from his recent Shock Value LP, with the artists who accompanied him on the studio tracks: "The Way I Are" with Keri Hilson and "Apologize" with One Republic. ...

Let's set one thing straight: Chris Brown does not dislike Ciara, even though he's quoted as saying "I don't want Ciara" in the current issue of Vibe. "I didn't say I didn't like her," the singer recently told MTV News. "They mixed it around. Ciara, you know you're my homie." The article states that Brown's face "curls up as if he'd just noticed a foul odor" when the topic of Ciara is broached. "They made it seem totally bogus," he explained. "I don't have any grudges. I'm not a negative person. And I don't have a certain type. I don't care if you're a model or if you work at a gas station. Everyone's human. Everyone's a loving human being. And everyone has a chance with me." ... The New York Times loves Justin Timberlake's Southern Hospitality — the "SexyBack" singer's baby-back ribs in particular. "The most confounding thing about Southern Hospitality is those baby back ribs. Because they are, against tall odds, good," Peter Meehan wrote in his review, which was published Wednesday. "They are juicy but not fatty, seasoned simply and evenly and scented with a strong but not overpowering hit of smoke." ...

Australian Web site Undercover has reported that Rage Against the Machine are tipped to be one of the headliners of the upcoming Big Day Out festival. Though organizers haven't yet announced the lineup of the January shows, the group has reportedly booked gigs in Sydney and Melbourne on January 22 and 30, respectively, which closely coincide with BDO shows in those cities. ... The Foo Fighters will serve as the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" on October 13, little more than two weeks after the band's Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace lands in stores. ...

Mya is stepping up for a good cause: The singer will perform at Skool'd, a benefit event to be hosted by Richie Rich on Wednesday night at Sol in New York. Eve DJ Miss Saigon and Le Tigre's JD Samson will spin at the benefit, the proceeds from which will go to the Ali Forney Center and the Reciprocity Foundation — organizations that assist lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender homeless youth in New York. Later Wednesday evening, she will host a party celebrating the launch of travel and lifestyle magazine Terrace at New York's Pink Elephant. ... A number of hip-hop and R&B acts have signed on to play a September 29 concert in support of the Jena Six, the black teens charged in connection with the beating of a white teen in Jena, Louisiana. Among the acts scheduled to play the Jena 6 Empowerment Concert at Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Alabama, according to the event's promoter, are Lloyd, Baby Boy, Twista, Jagged Edge, Tank, Killer Mike, Disturbing Tha Peace's Small World, B5, LAX Boys and Hurricane Chris. ...

Prince gave London Fashion Week the royal treatment on Wednesday when he delivered an unannounced performance during Matthew Williamson's catwalk show, Reuters reports. Once Prince's "U Got the Look" song reportedly began playing at the show, two models started dancing on the runway — after which the singer, who was sitting in the front row, started singing into a microphone from his seat. Prince them hopped on the runway and was joined by his band for the performance. "He really wanted to do this, and you don't say no to Prince," Williamson told the news service after the show. ... Bo Bice has seen the light, and it's Wal-Mart. The former "American Idol" finalist is planning to release his new album, See the Light, through the retail giant on October 23, with a presale on Walmart.com taking place beforehand. Wal-Mart will be the only terrestrial store carrying the disc, although it will be available through other online outlets. Bice, who parted ways with RCA last year, is putting out his second album through Sugar Money/ StratArt. "We had no inhibitions about what this was going to be," Bice said in a statement about the disc. "We just went in and did whatever we wanted to. The freedom shines through." ...

The Shins hope to indie-rock the mtvU Woodies this year — the band has scored three nominations, including Woodie of the Year. Lily Allen, Gym Class Heroes and Linkin Park have picked up two noms apiece, while Amy Winehouse, Common, Lil Wayne, TV on the Radio, M.I.A., Thom Yorke and Spoon have also been noticed. Don't miss the show when it airs November 15 on mtvU. ... A source told the Chicago Sun-Times that Michael Jackson is planning big things for his long-gestating comeback album. Comparing the music being recorded to the tunes on Jackson's landmark Thriller album, the source speculated that the yet-untitled, unscheduled disc might contain appearances by sister Janet Jackson and some of the other Jackson siblings. ...

Millions have watched Chris Crocker scream "Leave Britney alone!" on his hugely popular viral-video clip that recently made the rounds, and now reality-TV programmer 44 Blue Productions is hoping to parlay that success onto the small screen. Variety reports that a TV documentary soap is being developed around the 19-year-old Internet sensation — who still lives with his grandparents in Tennessee. ... According to reports from London, Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty — who has publicly stuggled with drugs — has written a song for fellow hot English mess, Amy Winehouse. The tune, "Amy on the Mend," was reportedly intended to lift Winehouse's spirits as she deals with her recent health issues and an alleged drug overdose last month, and was allegedly sent to Winehouse in a frame and signed, "Love, Pete." The Daily Star reported that the tune, timed with Winehouse's 24th birthday, features the lines, "Amy on the mend, all that passion to spend/ Like a paper Boadicea in a battle to the end, end, end." ...

Barry Bonds has piped up about Marc Ecko's move to let fans decide the fate of the baseball slugger's record-breaking 756th home-run ball, which Ecko won in an auction over the weekend, on Vote756.com. "He's stupid," Bonds said. "He's an idiot. He spent $750,000 on the ball and that's what he's doing with it? What he's doing is stupid." He added of the fans' voting, "All of those options don't weigh anything. In baseball, that number [756] stands." According to The Associated Press, Ecko issued a statement Wednesday saying he would make a custom T-shirt reading, "Marc Ecko paid $752,467 for my ball, and all I got was this 'stupid' T-shirt.' " Meanwhile, the hip-hop fashion mogul's philosophy has caught on — the man who submitted Bonds' record-tying home-run ball also plans to let fans vote on whether the item should go to Cooperstown or be destroyed. "I give [Ecko] a lot of credit in all sincerity," Ben Padnos told AP. "I understood the potential value in this." Speaking of which, there is one difference in Padnos' approach: He's selling ads on his Web site, EndtheDebate.com. ...

Owen Wilson was only supposed to have a minor cameo in Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder" flick, but all the same, Matthew McConaughey has stepped in to fill the actor's shoes after Wilson dropped out of the film following a suicide attempt last month, Variety reports. The movie, which is filming in Hawaii, will also star Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and others. ...

Former Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele is now eligible for parole, having served one-third of his four-year prison sentence, AP reports. Rhode Island's parole board will meet on Wednesday to decide whether to grant parole to Biechele, who was imprisoned for igniting pyrotechnics that sparked a deadly fire four years ago at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island.

In the days since Van Halen's August 13 announcement that a long-awaited reunion tour with founding frontman David Lee Roth was, indeed, on, the band's trusty fans haven't heard from the one man who could make a true VH reunion complete: original bassist Michael Anthony.

Instead, fans would eventually learn, Anthony has been replaced by guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son Wolfgang (see "Van Halen Reunite With David Lee Roth — Tour Kicks Off September 27"). Anthony hasn't granted any media interviews, and the band's followers have wondered why he's been excluded from what is already turning out to be a sellout, 25-date North American run, which kicks off in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 27. But on Tuesday, Anthony broke his silence in a pithy blog titled "Thanks for the support," which was posted on the musician's Web site.

"I want to thank everyone for all the support [you've] shown me during the past months," Anthony wrote. "It's all been pretty crazy, and I just wanted to bring you all up to speed."

With regard to the Van Halen reunion trek, Anthony claimed he was never even extended an invite. "It's not that I'm not touring with Van Halen because I'm going out with Sammy [Hagar, who fronted the band from 1985 to 1996 following Roth's departure, and then again from 2003 to 2005]. I'm going out with Sammy [as the Other Half] because I was not invited to do the [Van Halen] tour.

"Sammy told me that if I was asked to be part of the VH tour and decided to do it, it would be totally cool, and it would not tarnish our friendship in the least," Anthony continued. "Well, it's not to be, and life goes on. I'll still be out there with Sam, and I can't wait to do some partying with all of you." Hagar and Anthony's tour, which will feature the Mad Anthony Express, Los Tres Gusanos, the Other Half and Sammy and the Wabos, will kick off in Biloxi, Mississippi, on October 19 and run through November 17 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Anthony also urged fans to go easy on Wolfgang, calling the green bassist "a great kid" and adding, "Don't judge him too harshly — I'm sure he'll do just fine."

Missing, however, from Anthony's missive is any mention of the attempts Van Halen has reportedly made in recent weeks to erase Anthony from the band's 35-year history. Last week, fans lashed out at the band after photos of Anthony on Van Halen's official Web site were allegedly removed or replaced by an image of Wolfgang Van Halen; the pictures were restored within hours, soon after fans took notice and began sounding off on various VH message boards.

Nor is there a response in Anthony's blog to the rumors that recorded tapes will be used to re-create his distinctive backing vocals on the upcoming tour. Not surprisingly, Anthony also failed to make any reference to the recent reports that his name has been removed from the writing credits for the band's 1984 LP, 1984. Some of the band's fans first took notice of this little fact while reading the closing credits for the movie "Superbad"; Van Halen's hit song "Panama" is used in the film, but the song is credited only to Eddie and Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth.

According to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers database, Anthony's name has been removed from the songwriting credits of 1984, but he's still credited with crafting material for the band's other studio releases.

Anthony could not be reached for comment as of press time; a representative for Van Halen had not provided comment from the band at press time.

Sammy Hagar would like everyone to know that while he's more than pumped to be going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen, he has way more important things on his mind at the moment.

"I'm in Cabo right now, and everything's wonderful," he laughed, referring Cabo San Lucas, to the Mexican resort town where he owns a cantina. "I'm down by the water. The beach is calling my name. Listen to it!"

It bears mentioning that at this point in the interview, Hagar began to make "waves-crashing-on-the-shore" noises and then launched into a hazy recollection of how he found out about his induction, a long and winding story that included messenger birds, sunbathing and congratulatory phone calls from high-energy celebrity chefs.

"I think the Hall shoulda sent word of my induction via carrier pigeon or something, because down here, communication is a little, uh, unique," he explained. "The way I found out was that I came back off the beach and there was a message on my machine from someone — I don't even remember who right now — but it didn't even really register that I was in. And then Kenny Chesney calls, and Emeril Lagasse — all these friends on this high level — telling me how great it is. And I'm going, 'Wow, this is really a big deal!' "

Clearly, though he's honored, Hagar is taking the news a lot less seriously than most. Which is odd, considering that thanks to more than 30 years of infighting and back-biting, Van Halen's March 12 Hall of Fame induction and performance at New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel (see "R.E.M., Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash Make Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame") promises to be contentious.

Given the fact that VH has had three different frontmen — who haven't always gotten along, to put it mildly — recently replaced its founding bassist with the guitarist's teenaged son and may or may not even exist as a functioning unit these days, it'll be a miracle if the group (whoever they are) manages to perform at all.

"The talk amongst us so far has been that we're probably not going to play, because of the awkward situation with [bassist] Michael [Anthony], and the situation with Dave [Lee Roth] and I, and all of us with each other. I mean, we're not like mortal enemies or anything, there's just some weird quirks," Hagar said. "But Van Halen has always been unpredictable — anything can happen. If we get to play two songs, I'll be happy to sing one, and have Dave do the other one. I think that would be perfect. If there's only one song, well, then that could be kinda interesting."

And that's just the tip of it. Because while Hagar has been more than willing to talk about the Hall, the other members of Van Halen have remained virtually silent — the Van Halen brothers, Eddie and Alex, and hyperkinetic former frontman David Lee Roth released a joint statement thanking their fans, as did Anthony — which has only added an icy chill to the whole situation. Plus, there's the issue of the third Van Halen frontman, Gary Cherone, who took over when Hagar left the band (or was fired, depending on whom you ask) in 1996.

See, despite the fact that the former Extreme singer fronted Van Halen for nearly three years, and performed on 1998's Van Halen III, Cherone won't be coming to the HOF ceremony. It might have something to do with hurt feelings, but probably has more to do with the fact that Cherone isn't being inducted.

"I got nothing against Gary, but I would've voted against him getting in," Hagar said. "I think he was really just a moment in Van Halen. Dave and I were in the band for so long, and we sold so many records and I don't think you can deny that. As it stands, it seems a little goofy if you let Gary in. Because, there was questions about me getting in, because I've only been in the band 21 years," which is slightly fuzzy math, considering he's been in and out of the band for the last 10.

Of course, Hagar didn't have a say as to which members of Van Halen received the honor. And neither did anyone else in the band. Candidates for the Hall are determined by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation's nominating committee, a group of "around 30 writers, writers, critics, artists, agents and record-company people" who not only weigh the merits of various bands, but -- in the case of groups with shifting lineups like the Ramones or George Clinton's sprawling Parliament-Funkadelic collective -- must also weigh the contributions of individual members of those bands.

"We basically look at the body of work of the artist," explained Joel Peresman, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. "And you look at an artist like Van Halen, when David Lee Roth was in the band, they became big during that time, and when things switched with Sammy Hagar, things went to another level. They had incredible success with both people being involved in the band. People have already asked, 'Well, what about Gary Cherone? He was the frontman of the band, too,' but when you look at the full body of the work, that particular period in their career, it didn't make sense, because it wasn't really part of the success of Van Halen."

It's a harsh situation, to be sure. And though Peresman maintains that the Hall isn't in the business of bruising egos, sometimes people get offended. After all, we're dealing with rock stars here.

"You're not looking to blatantly insult people, but you're dealing with a diverse, knowledgeable group of people who have been involved in the music industry for a long time, and they're going to do what they think is right for the Hall of Fame," Peresman added. "If someone gets their feelings hurt, that wasn't the intent, but that might be the outcome."

Gary Cherone could not be reached for comment on the Hall of Fame snub, though fans on his message board at Cherone.com seem to be OK with him not getting in. After all, as one writes, "Gary will be a future Hall of Famer in his own right."

As for Hagar, well, despite the initial talk about Van Halen not performing at the Hall of Fame ceremony, he's optimistic that something can be worked out. One thing's for certain: Despite the fact that he's currently scheduled to appear on the second annual Cabo Wabo "Are We Having Fun Yet?" Cruise on the day of Van Halen's induction, he plans on being in New York, and having a thoroughly, well, Sammy time.

"I'm gonna fly from Cabo to New York, go a day or two early so I can have some fun in New York, and then I'll jump on my plane, come on back and meet the guests [on the cruise]," he enthused. "I'm bringing my wife and about a dozen of my best friends to the ceremony. It's too important — I'll cancel the damn cruise if I have to!"

Sammy Hagar Calls Reunion With Van Halen 'Inevitable'

Having just wrapped a "who-would-have-thunk-it" co-headlining tour with the guy he replaced in Van Halen 10 years before leaving the band himself, Sammy Hagar is now mentally preparing for a reunion with Eddie, Alex and Michael.

"I think a reunion is inevitable," the self-proclaimed "red rocker" said backstage at last week's MTV Video Music Awards, shortly after presenting an award with David Lee Roth. "I mean come on, how could it not [happen]?"

Hagar confessed that he hasn't spoken with either of the Van Halen brothers in quite some time, though bassist Michael Anthony has been joining him onstage of late.

"Mikey hasn't even heard from Eddie or Alex," Hagar explained. "I just think when they're ready to surface, they'll do it."

Roth, whose own attempt at a Van Halen reunion fell apart shortly after the 1996 VMAs, said he hasn't spoken to them either.

"Eddie Van Halen may catch up with us at some time in the future," he said. "I'm an optimist. Most people hope for the best, I actually expect it. When I go fishing, I take a Nikon and a frying pan. And I only hold positive visions for Eddie Van Heineken as well."

Hagar joined Van Halen in 1986 when Roth, the band's original, highly charismatic frontman whose voice soared over such early hits as "Runnin' With the Devil," "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher", left (or was fired, depending on which story you believe) to pursue a then-burgeoning solo career.

Hagar brought his considerable guitar prowess, slightly more serious lyrical presence and a back catalog of solo hits like "I Can't Drive 55" into the Van Halen fold. Hagar's seemingly more congruent personal and musical chemistry with guitar hero Eddie helped take the band to its greatest commercial heights, though admittedly many fans and critics alike long held out hope for a reunion with Diamond Dave.

Their wish seemed to have come true when Van Halen?s management issued a statement in June 1996 announcing that Hagar had left the band and that Roth was collaborating with them on two new tracks set to be included on a greatest-hits package.

Roth appeared with Van Halen at the 1996 VMAs to present an award to Beck, though he declined to ease into the background (as is customary at such events) while Beck accepted, and proceeded to soak up much of the moment's spotlight for himself instead. Soured by his antics, Eddie fired Roth before ever officially even rehiring him, and subsequently recruited former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone for 1998's Van Halen 3 (see "Van Halen Set Listening Party, Track Listing For III").

A battle of words ensued between the Van Halen brothers, Sammy and Dave in the press. As each singer resumed their respective solo careers, Eddie accused them both of having "lead singer's disease," and Van Halen proceeded to tour with Cherone. Van Halen 3 was a critical and commercial failure that sent Cherone packing, though his split was (strangely, perhaps) uncharacteristically amicable.

Things have been relatively quiet on the Van Halen front ever since. Warner Bros. severed ties with the band (see "First No Singer, Now No Label For Van Halen"). Eddie successfully fought cancer (see "Eddie Van Halen Says He's Fighting Cancer"), and rumors abounded that the band was attempting a new reconciliation with Roth (see "Van Halen Fans Plagued By Hoaxes"). Last year, Eddie surfaced to say that the group had a lot of songs, but no singer (see "Eddie Says Van Halen Loaded With Songs, Short On Singers").

Michael Anthony eventually found his way back into the studio with Hagar (see "Sammy Hagar Makes Tracks With Van Halen Bassist, Journey-Men"), who has kept himself busy with his various solo outings and the unlikely tour with Roth that just wrapped (see "David Lee Roth Shakes It In Spandex, Sammy Hagar Bashes Eddie At Tour Debut").

"It's not that I'm crying for [a reunion]," clarified Hagar, who also sells his own brand of tequila. "I'm happy. I'm totally happy. [But] I don't think I could say I am never going to play with those guys again and it will never happen. And God forbid something happened to one of us and then it could never happen. I'd be very regretful.

"So I think it's inevitable," he reiterated. "So I think we'll do it. And hopefully we'll do it like right here in the VMAs sometime or something."

— Ryan J. Downey, with additional reporting by SuChin Pak

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — The pervading feeling between dueling former Van Halen frontmen David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar may never be love, but fans showed a lot of it Wednesday at Blossom Music Center.

Vintage Van Halen T-shirts peppered the fiery crowd. Fortysomething women
fashioned the Van Halen symbol with their hands as they shook their shoulders
to songs such as "5150" and "Panama." A group of teenage boys wrote with
marker "f--- Eddie" on their arms, referring, of course, to VH guitarist Eddie Van Halen.

The admiration was mutual between the crowd and Roth and Hagar. Mop-haired
Hagar opened the show at 7:15 p.m. — the singers are alternating set order during the tour — with a video retrospective that included interviews, clips of magazine
stories and Van Halen photos. It hit a snag midway through, and kicked back
to the beginning of the film. When it finished, a curtain was drawn to allow
a select number of fans to stand on risers behind the band in an effort to
maintain Hagar's tradition of creating a club atmosphere onstage.

Bathed in red lights, Hagar kicked off his set with the apropos "Red."

"We're gonna turn this whole f---ing place red," screamed Hagar, who was
wearing a yellow T-shirt from his Cabo Wabo club that said, "Got Tequila"
across his chest. He quickly went into the Van Halen hit "Runaround," which
prompted the sea of fans to collectively mimic Hagar, who was whipping his
arm around in a circular motion.

At times, Hagar was a little too chatty between songs, often using long
stories to segue into the next tune.

"It's still daylight and I'm going to get drunk," Hagar said. He
yelled "Waitress!" and in response, a scantily clad woman arrived onstage to
pour him a margarita. "It's my first of the day, so make it a double," he instructed.

He coaxed the woman, a "calendar girl" from a local radio station, to imbibe
with him momentarily. "It's OK to drink on the job. As a matter of fact, it's
mandatory."

After wrapping up "Top of the World," Hagar admitted that he was somewhat
nervous.

"I didn't know what to expect today because, well, you know why," he said, referring
to his tempestuous relationship with Roth. "All I got to say is this is:
f---ing killer. This is the sh--. That's what I'm talkin' about. Waitress!"

Hagar took a potshot at Eddie Van Halen, who is now reportedly healthy after
receiving treatment for cancer. Among the groups of fans onstage was a
cardboard cut-out of the axeman, whose head the red rocker smacked after saying, "You
don't have nothin' to say? Didn't think so."

He further revved up the crowd by hitting a Cabo Wabo Tequila bottle piñata
with his guitar after singing "Mas Tequila." When the bottle opened, a mop-haired green
worm popped out.

Vocally, Hagar rose above a hoarse-sounding Diamond Dave, who needed a bit of
polishing. Hagar's voice soared to impressive heights during songs such as
"Eagles Fly," "Dreams" and the closer, "Right Now."

Roth was the antithesis of Hagar, who used videotapes of topless women at one
point as a backdrop for his show. The flamboyant original VH frontman opted
for a more "artsy" approach with his videos, repeatedly showing different variations of
cat-suit-wearing women and an armed Roth searching the halls for those
unknown. Interspersed with those scenes were shots of Roth doing martial
arts.

He couldn't measure up to Hagar's charisma, however. Aside from a few kicks,
Roth exchanged personality for shaking his spandex-covered lower body toward
the audience. His stage banter was minimal; he let his body and lyrics do the
talking for him. Roth, who botched the words to "(Oh) Pretty Woman," used a bottle
of Jack Daniel's to mimic a sex act and, upon "completion," splashed the
liquor on fans sitting close to the stage.

Using suspenders to keep up his spandex pants, Dave ended his set with a
martial-arts-style, baton-twirling number during an instrumental part of Van Halen's
hit "Jump." He bowed with the stick tucked under his arm, looking like a
majorette in a high school band.

Van Halen fans' "Sammy vs. Dave" battle clearly had a winner Wednesday night: Right here, right now, Hagar was on "Top of the World."

WEST HOLLYWOOD — It's not exactly what Van Halen fans had hoped for, but it's definitely intriguing. David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, former singers for the group, will co-headline a national tour beginning May 29 near Cleveland.

And if Tuesday's (April 16) press conference to announce the outing is any indication, Diamond Dave and the Red Rocker are going to be the perfect pairing. Like a rock and roll comedy duo, the blond bastions of partying traded gags one-after-another at the Sky Bar, setting each other up and flashing face-wide grins at each punch line.

"Sammy and I are like fraternity brothers that have been through the same sh---y hazing," Roth said. "I think this tour is going to last a lot longer than Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love" (see "Hole Walks Out On Tour, Manson Injury Postpones Several Dates").

Roth and Hagar, the man who replaced him in Van Halen in 1985, certainly share a line or two on their résumés, but their joint tour is about more than that, Hagar said. "This is about making a statement."

"What we are about is a spirit, an attitude," added Roth, who was clad in black leather and surrounded by women in fluorescent yellow spandex cat suits. "It goes beyond the last band we were in. It's a state of mind and a point of view that Van Halen has misplaced — twice."

Hagar said he first approached Roth with the idea five years ago, but the boisterous singer shot it down.

"Yes, Sam, you did have the idea first, but the time was wrong," Roth said. "Now the time is right. It's completely unpredictable."

Tuesday marked only the second time the two, who have traded verbal jabs in the past, have spent any significant time together under one roof.

"I think that was before we met," Hagar said of their past animosity. Now that they're acquainted, will they perform together onstage? "We don't know each other well enough. I don't trust him," Hagar joked.

"Any rivalry that may have occurred is nothing that can't be cured with a little Cabo Wabo Tequila," Roth added, referring to Hagar's liquor brand.

Jokes aside, the singers said their friendly rivalry will push both of them to perform to the best of their abilities, hence the boxing reference in the tour's official slogan: "Song for song, the heavyweight champs of rock 'n' roll."

Roth and Hagar will each play 90-minute sets, alternating the headlining slot.

"We're going to flip a blonde in the next city and I'm going to call tails," Roth joked. "You have to think of it as two title fights with no under card. This is a co-headlining tour here. We'll flip a coin and the winner will headline opening night and then we'll flip-flop."

Both singers said they plan to include a heavy dose of Van Halen in their sets.

"I'm going to do almost exclusively the Van Halen catalog," Roth said. "It's about time that we show up and not just do renditions. I have a hot band that will serve it large."

"He's going to do some of the Van Halen songs I did," Hagar joked.

"Since Dave actually wrote those songs," Roth shot back.

"What you have is quintessential Americana, and you couldn't pick a more appropriate time for that," explained Roth, who described the vibe of the tour as a cross between Jimmy Buffett and Limp Bizkit. "Between the two of us there is probably something between 80 to 100 million albums sold. And whether you've owned it or not, you've heard Sammy or my voice blaring out of a pickup truck in front of you at the drive-thru at the local Burger King for how many summers?"

As for the chances of Eddie and Alex Van Halen joining either singer for a reunion, it doesn't appear likely. Although Hagar and Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony are working together on a side project and both Hagar and Roth said Anthony is welcome to perform with them, they did not sound interested in the Van Halen brothers.

"I'm not sure what the brothers think and I'm not sure I really care," Roth said.

When asked why Gary Cherone, the other former Van Halen singer, is not on the bill, Roth joked that the former Extreme frontman was busy doing "The Vagina Monologues."

Roth/Hagar tour dates, according to a spokesperson for the tour:

Sammy Hagar is in talks with a Las Vegas casino company to open up a Sin City version of his popular Cabo Wabo Cantina in Mexico, his manager said.

The "red rocker" hopes to have the Vegas facility operating in about a year's time if all goes according to plan, manager Kenny Puvogel said.

Hagar will partner with Station Casinos, a chain whose holdings include the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino in Henderson, Nevada, about 15 minutes southeast of downtown Las Vegas. Plans call for a multilevel, 20,000 square foot cabaret to be incorporated into the Sunset Station complex. Live entertainment rooms in the complex currently include a 600-seat lounge and an amphitheater that can house up to 5,000.

Hagar — who plays his Mexican club several times a year, including his annual birthday bash every October — started the cabaret with his former Van Halen bandmates in 1990. The other members pulled out of the operation before Hagar left the group in 1996.

Since that time, Hagar also has started up a sideline marketing his own brand of Cabo Wabo tequila.

The singer hopes to make the announcement about the Vegas club at a free radio station concert at Las Vegas' Thomas and Mack Center on January 26. Roughly 15,000 tickets are being given away through the sponsoring station (KOMP 92.3), area casinos and other Las Vegas businesses.

Many veteran rockers would rather forget their birthdays, but Sammy Hagar is putting his in lights and taking it on the road.

The former Van Halen singer, born October 13, 1947, is celebrating the release of his new album, "Ten 13" (named after the happy day), with his traditional birthday bash(es) on October 10, 13, and 14 at the Red Rocker's Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He will then launch a road trip monikered the "Cabo Wabo Birthday Bash Tour," which kicks off on October 31 in Hartford, Connecticut.

The album is scheduled for release on October 24 via his own label, Cabo Wabo Music, in conjunction with the Beyond label (see "Sammy Hagar Starts New Label, Album").

In other Hagar news, the singer has been passing along the latest rumors from the Van Halen camp in various interviews, including a pending piece in the Los Angeles-based "Music Connection" magazine. According to Hagar,
former VH frontman David Lee Roth had been working with Van Halen, and the reunited lineup completed four songs. However, Hagar reports that the two entities again had a falling out; he expects that Van Halen will likely release a box set of Roth-era material which may or may not include those four songs.

As for Roth, he appears to be taking other studio strides. According to the unofficial but reliable Van Halen News Desk, the Webmasters at Roth's official site have promised "new audio and video" from the singer, which they say is "so new, it ain't finished."

If you want to wish the Red Rocker a happy birthday, here's where to find him:

10/31 - Hartford, CT @ Webster Theatre
11/1 - New York, NY @ Irving Plaza
11/3 - Providence, RI @ Lupo's
11/4 - Boston @ Avalon Ballroom
11/6 - Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club
11/7 - Philadelphia.
"Red Rocker" and former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar is in the process of starting his own record label, Cabo Wabo Music.

The company, which will house an album of new Hagar songs this fall, will likely be in conjunction with Beyond Music, although Hagar's management reports that the contracts for that deal have yet to be signed. While Hagar will be the label's sole concentration for the immediate future, Cabo Wabo will eventually be looking at signing other artists.

Hagar has scrapped plans to issue a retrospective boxed set of material covering his career from Montrose to Van Halen in favor of releasing all-new material. Recording is underway at the singer's home studio in Mill Valley, near San Francisco. Contrary to published reports, Guns N' Roses producer Mike Clink is not confirmed as the album's producer, although Clink has done some tracks for the project.

Management reports that they hope to complete the project in August and have
it out in time for Hagar's birthday, October 13, and the annual celebration at Hagar's Cabo Wabo nightclub in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, that accompanies it. The album's title, "Ten Thirteen," also honors that date.
