It's an unlikely love affair, but quite a few hip-hop heads have really been feeling Swedish indie-rock trio Peter, Bjorn and John lately. From Kanye West, who sampled the group's breakthrough hit "Young Folks" for his Can't Tell Me Nothing mixtape, to Drake, who worked with them on So Far Gone's "Let's Call It Off."

That sonic bromance is going major August 27, thanks to producer Mick Boogie, the man behind last year's lauded Jay-Z/Coldplay mash-up mixtape, Viva la Hova. Boogie was recently handed the master to PB&J's most recent album, Living Thing, and he's done it again, overseeing a full-album remix dubbed Re-Living Thing that the acclaimed mixtape kid said is one of his finest efforts to date. The best part? It's all legit.

The results feature an impressive roster of guest spots from the likes of Wu-Tang Clan's GZA, Kardinal Offishall, Wale, Young Chris & Rhymefest, Bun B, Talib Kweli, Three 6 Mafia with Trouble Andrew, Amanda Blank, 88-Keys and Big Sean with Black Milk. Boogie said he spent time with PB&J and was blown away by what hip-hop heads the soft-spoken Swedes are.

"Because of the success of that Jay-Z thing, great things have been happening," said Boogie, who warmed up for the PB&J gig by reworking Adele's Grammy-winning debut, 19, on the mashup album 1988. "This time the idea was not just remixing, but adding some vocals and getting two to three incredible, known blog-worthy MCs and putting them on every song." As usual, Boogie's job was more like a museum curator, gathering the MCs and a handful of up-and-coming producers and parceling out the songs after sitting down with the band and talking about what they had in mind.

"We talked music and production and artists and it showed me what a global phenomenon hip-hop is, because these guys who grew up in Sweden were quoting Wu-Tang lyrics — and they knew all the underground stuff, too, like Amanda Blank and Kidz in the Hall," he said. Boogie gave the group — Peter Moren, Björn Yttling and John Eriksson — a list of rappers and producers he thought would work, they gave him their list and, in the end, Boogie said they got about three-quarters of the names they were looking for.

"I listened to the album over and over again and I learned it and loved it, and I thought about all the people I wanted to work with and who fit what and then ... I would pick a producer for each song," Boogie said. "After we got the beats back, I would listen to them again and see if the vibe changed and then figure out which artist was good for which track."

The results will be unveiled as a free online mixtape next week, available, according to Boogie, "on all your favorite blogs." Though there are still some guest spots that are in process and could be added up until the full tape drops, Boogie said he's very happy with the results, which he said might prove to be a template for his future work. Along with legends such as Jazzy Jeff, Boogie tapped such newer producers as nVMe, a Brooklyn crew he said did an amazing job on "Just the Past" with Kanye West protégé Big Sean and Slum Village associate Black Milk.

With two songs on the album, Boogie's former Ohio homeboys in the Kickdrums bring an aggressive sound to "Nothing to Worry About" with Wale, Young Chris & Rhymefest; and "Lay It Down," which mixes the Three 6 Mafia's thugged out Southern sound with Trouble Andrew's more punk-rock-skater-MC vibe.

"I think this is a great model of how to do out-of-the-box stuff," Boogie said.

The tentative track listing for the album, with more to be added later:

» J. Cole & GZA - "The Feeling" (remixed by Marco Polo)
» Kardinal Offishall, Donnis & Heno - "It Just Don't Move Me" (remixed by Jet Audio)
» Big Sean & Black Milk - "Just The Past" (remixed by nVMe)
» Wale, Young Chris & Rhymefest - "Nothing To Worry About" (remixed by The Kickdrums)
» Bun B - "Losing My Mind" (remixed by 6th Sense)
» Freebass 808 & Amanda Blank - "Living Thing" (remixed by Apple Juice Kid)
» Talib Kweli - "I Want You" (remixed by William Russell / Good Life Mike)
» Three Six Mafia and Trouble Andrew - "Lay It Down" (remixed by The Kickdrums)
» Big Pooh, Chaundon and Phil Nash - "Stay This Way" (remixed by Jazzy Jeff)
» Naledge & Mickey Factz - "Blue Period Picasso" (remixed by nVMe)
» 88 Keys, Outasight & 6th Sense - "4 Out Of 5" (remixed by 6th Sense)
The GZA is one less person on 50 Cent's Christmas card list this year. Who are we fooling? Wu-Tang Clan's GZA and 50 were never friends. They don't even know each other, but they haven't seen eye to eye since the Genius started dissing the G-Unit last year during a concert run. 50 responded by calling the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder "irrelevant."

It took awhile, but GZA is trying to start another round of back-and-forth. He released the G-Unit dis record "Paper Plate" on Friday. It's the first release from GZA's fifth solo LP, Pro Tools.

"Whipped with Cuban Linx," GZA threatens in his 100-plus-bar tirade, produced by RZA. "Cut by Liquid Swords/ Crushed by Ironman till we choke your vocal chords."

"You ever seen someone who roll with Mayweather/ Rhyme like Ricky Hatton?" asks GZA, who mocks Fif's crew with the name "Flea Unit." "Smash whatever you throw, a thousand is what I'm batting/ Got a few hooks but no jabs .../ Enough to make you vogue on that cover of GQ/ Only thing missing is the sheer blouse, homie/ You see-through."

The title "Paper Plate," according to GZA's camp, implies that 50's art is "disposable."

Other producers on Pro Tools, slated for release on August 19, include Bronze Nazareth, Allah Mathematics, True Master, Arabian Knight, Jay Waxx and Black Milk. GZA's son, Justice, and Wu-Tangers RZA and Masta Killa are featured on the album.

Britney Spears' no-show at her court-ordered deposition on Wednesday will be addressed in court "probably within the next 30 days," Kevin Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan told UsMagazine.com, and according to The Associated Press, the attorney will file papers requesting that sanctions be imposed on her before the next court date, on January 23. "This can be done with her participation or without it. But it doesn't help anyone not to obey court orders," he told UsMagazine.com. "We will go forward, and she can respond in any way that addresses her failure to appear." The lawyer had previously told People.com that he was planning to ask the court for "some kind of remedy" regarding the matter, calling the singer's absence at the deposition a "willful non-appearance." According to Kaplan, he learned moments after the singer was due to arrive at the deposition that she wouldn't be going due to a "medical condition." "But she was in fact out later that day and night," he told People.com. "It's not fourth grade, where you get a doctor's note and it's all OK. She was ordered to attend. And if there's a legitimate reason for her not to attend, she would have to establish that." The attorney said he would ask the court to have Spears pay for expenses incurred due to the missed deposition, but he added, "We're not interested in punishing her. We're interested in getting facts." ...

Radiohead apparently have a fan in Jay-Z. The hip-hop mogul told Billboard.com that the band's In Rainbows release scheme "was a genius idea. I'm sure someone [in R&B/hip-hop] will follow that model," he said, adding that he would be willing to follow in their footsteps. On a similar note, Jay addressed the rumors about him leaving Def Jam. "The model of selling CDs has changed," he said. "So doing things the typical way is not in the best interests of anyone and not exciting for me. My whole thing is, how do we invest in the future? If everyone is committed to doing that, then I'm sure there's a deal to be made." In the interview, Jigga also beamed about Feist ("I'm riding with [The Reminder] right now. Her voice is so distinctive and beautiful") and Amy Winehouse ("I'd love to work with her again. I hope she keeps herself together"), and revealed that he'll put out another album "if I'm inspired. I have one album left, right? If I'm inspired to make that album, then my contract is done and I'm not in the music business anymore, as far as being an artist. I can still make music. ... Who knows? The possibilities are endless — and without any pressure to sell anything, I could make whatever and do whatever with my music. Maybe the songs would just play in [my] 40/40 [Club]." ...

"Hannah Montana" tickets are so hard to come by these days, even Lindsay Lohan can't score 'em. According to People.com, the actress phoned into Las Vegas radio station Mix 94.1 on Friday (December 14) in an effort to get tix for her friend's nieces — the station's morning show had been giving away tickets to people who were able to get celebrities to call into the show. While on air, Lohan — who left rehab in October — talked about how she's been lately, saying, "I think my life is different now, and it's changed, and I'm growing up. I've gone through a lot, and I'm just a different person now." She later added, "It's amazing, everything's going so well." She also gave an update on her recent recording sessions: "I've been in the studio, and it's going really well, and I'm really excited, 'cause it's going to be more urban pop." Finally, Lohan revealed that she wants to head to Africa on a humanitarian mission in the near future. "I really love children," she said, "and it would be nice to give back." ...

50 Cent might have more beef coming his way — GZA dissed him during his club show at the Knitting Factory in New York on Thursday night, saying, Fif "ain't got no mother----ing lyrics," according to RollingStone.com. He also reportedly paid tribute to his fallen Wu-Tang Clan group mate Ol' Dirty Bastard at the gig, the first of a two-night residency during which he is performing his classic Liquid Swords album in its entirety. ...

Just in case you forgot that Tom Morello has a lot of friends, check out a partial list of the guests who performed with him Thursday night in Hollywood at his final Nightwatchman show of the year, according to RollingStone.com: Slash, Serj Tankian, Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell and William DuVall, Perry Farrell and his Satellite Party, Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Filter frontman Richard Patrick, Mötley Crüe's Mick Mars and actor Tim Robbins. "Blonde" will be shown in eight theaters starting December 21, and if it does well, could see a wider release, according to the site. The DVD of the comedy — which co-stars another Texas native, Luke Wilson — will hit stores January 22. ... The reunion tour by the Police was the highest-grossing tour of 2007, raking in more than $212 million while selling 1.8 million tickets, according to Billboard Boxscore. It was followed by another boomer-riffic reunion tour — Genesis came in second on grosses of $129 million, followed by Justin Timberlake, who took in $126.8 million and drew more than 1.6 million fans worldwide. Also making the top 10 was Christina Aguilera, who nosed in at #9 on grosses of $48.1 million. Despite the massive grosses by the top acts, overall the magazine reports that North American concert dollars and attendance were down double digits for the year, with grosses slipping 10.2 percent and attendance down 19.2 percent. ...

In a scene that could have been cut from one of those 1980s John Hughes teen-angst movies, a custodian's impromptu after-hours karaoke performance of the Guns N' Roses classic "Welcome to the Jungle" at a Roxbury, Connecticut, high school almost ended in disaster. According to AP, police say a Booth Free School teacher, who was working after-hours and thought she was alone in the building, barricaded herself in her classroom when she heard someone singing the lines, "You're in the jungle, baby! You're gonna die!," over the loudspeaker, and thought it was a threat directed at her. Six troopers and three police dogs raced to the scene and found three teens — one of whom is a school custodian — who had been messing with the public-address system. The three were cuffed for 15 minutes during the investigation, and no charges were filed in the end. ...

Kill Rock Stars, Touch and Go and other indie labels have written an angry letter to Rolling Stone in response to the Camel cigarette controversy that was revealed last week. The labels — as well as state attorneys general and anti-smoking activists — are upset about a Camel ad that appeared alongside a cartoon-heavy indie-rock feature in the magazine's November 15 issue. "[We] wish to share our indignation regarding [the] pull-out editorial, which featured the names of our artists in conjunction with an ad for Camel cigarettes," reads the letter. "This editorial cartoon gives every impression of being part and parcel of the advertisement wrapped around it. The use of an artist's name to promote a brand or product should be done only with the artist's explicit consent, something that was neither solicited nor obtained from the labels or bands. ... Many of the bands named, and the labels that represent them, are very unhappy with the implication that they have any involvement with R.J. Reynolds and Camel cigarettes. We ask that Rolling Stone apologize for blurring the line between editorial and advertisement, and in doing so, implying that the bands named support the product being advertised." Skin Graft, Lovepump United, Lucky Madison, 5RC, Audio Dregs and Fryk Beat also signed the letter. ...

Get the f--- out!" Her label reportedly responded with a statement, saying, "Tori doesn't sell front row seats to her shows. She'll pick fans that are in the back row and she will upgrade them. But, almost as fast as those clips showed up on sites like YouTube, they were reportedly taken down at the request of the band's management. Or perhaps at the request of Warner Bros., which owns the publishing rights to Zeppelin's catalog, according to Portfolio.com, which reported that individual clips began disappearing from YouTube on Tuesday afternoon "due to a copyright claim by Warner Music Group," which, incidentally, has a licensing deal with YouTube for its content. However, the story got even weirder Thursday morning, when the Silicon Alley Insider revealed that a Brooklyn, New York, company called "GrayZone," which bills itself as the "bootbusters of the entertainment industry," took the initiative in sending out the takedown notices. According to the Alley Insider story, GrayZone apologized for erroneously issuing the notices and explained, "The error is ours alone. We acted without authorization from the band or Warner Music Group. Unfortunately, an automated system mistakenly attributed the removal of the content to a copyright claim by Warner Music Group. That was inaccurate. We have informed YouTube of the error and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused." Speculation had surfaced that the reason for the takedown might be tied to an expected DVD release of the event at some point next year. ... The band will set sail January 25 in San Francisco and play about a month's worth of gigs that will wind down with a February 22 show in Los Angeles.

System of a Down will release the second half of their Mezmerize/ Hypnotize double LP on November 22 — but bassist Shavo Odadjian is already looking ahead to a potentially fascinating side project he's cooking up with Wu-Tang Clan's RZA and GZA.

Odadjian said he first befriended the Wu when the two groups teamed up with producer Rick Rubin for a new version of Wu's "Shame," which opens 2000's Loud Rocks hip-hop/rock summit LP. Odadjian has kept in touch with the RZA ever since, and they'd often talk about working together again on some future project.

"[Wu-Tang] were in the studio two months ago," working on their forthcoming, yet-untitled album (see "Wu-Tang Regroup For ODB Tribute Track, RZA Brings Pink The Grunge"), "and I got a page from RZA," Odadjian recalled. "He's like, 'We're in [Los Angeles]. Come down and hang out.' So I went to the studio around midnight, and we started talking about maybe me doing some bass lines for the record. I had this white, fretless six-string bass I thought would be amazing for hip-hop, and we jammed all night, until like 7 the next morning — just RZA, GZA and me, going off on weird beats and playing weird time signatures."

Odadjian's contributions will be spliced and infused into some of the RZA's tracks, he said. But more importantly, the jam led to some even loftier ideas.

"We all hit it off, so we'll be working on a solo project soon," the bassist said. "GZA's writing beats and all of the lyrics, RZA's writing beats and I'll be playing all the bass and writing most of the music. It's not written in stone, but we're talking about it. I want to get [System frontman Serj Tankian] to play drums, maybe sing on some songs. We have a few ideas for songs and it's going to be really cool. It's going to be a really crazy album, but it's not going to be like Wu-Tang or System. It'll be wherever I'm at in my head and wherever they're at in their heads."

Of course, Odadjian's not the only Systemite who's branched out into hip-hop: Tankian recently remixed the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Who Shot Ya" for the soundtrack to designer Marc Ecko's "Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure" video game.

NEW YORK — Being part of such an acclaimed motley crew as the Wu-Tang Clan, you become accustomed to getting screams while you're rocking shows. Even the most devoted Clan member, though, has to wonder every now and then, "Just how many people actually came to see me?"

On Tuesday night, despite the entire Wu not turning out in full force, fans poured into B.B. King's club to support one of their favorite Clansmen and the night's main attraction, the GZA.

In celebration of his latest LP, Legend of the Liquid Sword, GZA took to the stage, starting things up by representing for the Wu iron flag on "Reunited."

"It's Wu muthaf---a," a DAT recording of a woman's voice rang out over the RZA-crafted violins and bass, while the witty line-dropper took fans back to Wu-Tang's double LP, Wu-Tang Forever.

"Reunited, double LP world excited/ Struck a match to the underground, the industry ignited."

GZA continued to fire things up with a smattering of his solo cuts and such Wu collaborations as "Clan in Da Front," "Bring Da Ruckus," "Cold World" and "Liquid Swords."

Coming full circle from the title track of his first solo LP to his new album, GZA went into "Animal Planet," which features a slow sample reminiscent of some of RZA's early work.

"I mention a lot of animals in the song," the Genius explained of the song a few weeks ago on the set of his "Knock, Knock" video in New York. "I said 'Welcome to the jungle where the cats love to scratch/ The rats squeal and the polar bear feasts off the blubber of seals/ The pack of wolves be scheming on a bunch of gazelles/ Where the leopard grab the wildebeest down by its tail.

"I [also] got a track [on the LP] called 'Luminal,' produced by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill," he continued. "It's a rhyme about a serial killer. It's a crime drama thing. The beat is banging. Luminol is a substance they spray on the wall at murder scenes and it reveals blood you can't even see with the naked eye, even if you sprayed it down. I called it 'Luminal' because it's a mystery murder thing. It's about this crazed individual that's out, he's killed so many people. You don't know if he's out, if he's caught. I like doing my own things. I get to experiment with a lot more things but I also like working with the group."

While most of GZA's group members weren't present for his show, Masta Killa did come out, lending vocal support on "In the Hood," from Wu's Iron Flag album. He also performed the first single and title track from his almost-forgotten-about solo album, No Set Date.

"How many of y'all ready for a Masta Killa album?" the Clan's quietest and only member not to have a solo LP released asked before going into a call-and-response with fans, getting them to yell "No set date!"

While there is also no set date for the Wu's 10th anniversary album that the RZA has been talking about, GZA did round off his show reminding fans of why they fell in love with the Shaolin collective a decade ago, performing their first single, "Protect Ya Neck." Later, he followed with his current single, "Knock, Knock."

Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah and RZA are among the guests on Legend of the Liquid Sword. RZA also provided a track for the album, as did Jay "Waxx" Garfield, Bink and Jaz-O.

Even as most of the members prep solo records and Method Man suggests some group therapy is in order, the Wu-Tang Clan will manage to crank out an album by year's end, group mastermind RZA promises.

RZA said Tuesday that the Clan will follow up last year's The W with an album of "back-to-basics, raw Wu stuff" in December.
However, Method Man recently told a far different story.

When you have so many mouths to feed and then the sales aren't what they used to be, you know, things happen. Right now we're all working together to build a family structure back again. F--- a album. Let's be a family again.
"We gotta bring the friendship back, the unit back, before we can even attempt to go in the studio and make another album."
Columbia Records has penciled in December 4 as the album's tentative release date. Though RZA said the group will record new material over the next few months, Wu-Tang have more than an album's worth of songs left over from The W sessions, as well as material recorded with Ol' Dirty Bastard while he was on the lam last fall. ODB is currently in a New York jail awaiting sentencing on crack-cocaine charges (see "ODB Sentencing Postponed Until July.")
ODB's studio work while a fugitive from the law also enabled him to turn up on RZA's and Ghostface Killah's solo albums.

He joins Meth, GZA, Masta Killa and Goodie Mob's Big Gipp on RZA as Bobby Digital: Digital Bullet, due August 28. The LP is RZA's second album as the techno-age superhero Bobby Digital. "Show U Love" will serve as a club single, while "La Rumba" will be released to radio and have an accompanying video.

Method Man is in the midst of recording his third solo LP with Wu producer Mathematics, Dame Grease, Yogi and Quran, the latter of whom tracked Meth's "Break Ups 2 Make Ups," his Def Jam publicist said.
The effort, which Method Man at one point planned to title Tical O: The Prequel, is his first solo LP since 1998's Tical 2000: Judgement Day.
Ghostface Killah is finishing up Bulletproof Wallets in Miami, according to his A&R rep. Other than Dirty, the follow-up to last year's Supreme Clientele features guest spots from Raekwon, Meth and Carl Thomas and production by RZA, Alchemist and Ghost.
GZA is recording his third solo effort, while Raekwon is set to drop the follow-up to 1999's Immobilarity, on October 9. No details were available on either album at press time.

Cappadonna released The Yin and the Yang in April.
