Shame on those who'd written off rock as a dead genre. Rock, it seems, was just taking a little nap. But thanks to Godsmack, Tool, Pearl Jam and Taking Back Sunday, who've dominated the Billboard albums chart in recent weeks, it's safe to say the genre's sales have reawakened. The trend continues this week with Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' first fresh offering in four years.

What's hard to imagine, though, is that it took the Peppers — one of the most popular rock bands to emerge over the past two decades — more than 20 years and nine studio records to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. But according to the latest SoundScan totals, they've finally managed it with Stadium Arcadium, their 28-track double LP. With more than 442,000 copies sold its first week in stores, Stadium has shattered the Red Hot Chili Peppers' previous sales successes — 2002's By the Way racked up 282,000 in sales to finish at #2, while 1999's Californication generated 189,000 week-one scans for a #3 opening.

The sole threat this week to the Peppers' chart-topping opening wasn't much of a threat at all. The second solo outing from Jessica Simpson's ex Nick Lachey, What's Left of Me, didn't get within 250,000 copies of Stadium Arcadium. Lachey's latest opens at #2 with first-week sales nearing 172,000. Tool's 10,000 Days, which bowed at #1 on the previous chart, slides to third place, selling 157,000 copies.

The self-titled album from R&B outfit Jagged Edge — the group's first fresh release in three years — follows at #4, debuting with sales close to 115,000. Occupying the #5 spot is Baby Makin' Music, the new album from soul stalwarts the Isley Brothers; nearly 111,000 copies of that LP left record stores during the disc's first week out.

The remainder of the top 10 is rife with repeat offenders. Rascal Flatts' Me & My Gang claims the #6 slot with close to 106,000 scans, while the soundtrack to the Disney Channel original movie "High School Musical" — one of the year's biggest chart surprises — hangs tough at #7 with 89,000 sales.

Pearl Jam's latest, self-titled LP slips from #2 to #8 with week-two sales of 86,000 and change, while the 21st installment in the Now That's What I Call Music! compilation series — featuring Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyes Peas and Nickelback — claims #9 with 76,000 copies sold. James Blunt's Back to Bedlam rounds out (and returns to) the top 10, selling close to 71,000 units, a 22 percent boost in retail interest.

The new chart is peppered with a number of noteworthy debut showings. In at #14 is the newest release from Paul Simon, Surprise, which sold close to 61,000 copies, followed by Neil Young's Living With War at #15 with 60,000 scans. St. Elsewhere, the debut from Gnarls Barkley — a collaboration between Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo — opens at #20 with 50,000 units flying off shelves. Motown legend and current Cash Money heavyweight Teena Marie's Sapphire bows at #24 with 44,000 copies sold.

Snow Patrol return to the chart with their latest, Eyes Open, which debuts at #34 with 36,000 in sales, and Korn's Live & Rare finishes at #51 with close to 22,000 scans. Chris Isaak's Best of Chris Isaak claims the #54 opening with 21,000 units sold, while MC Magic's Magic City pops up at #155 with 6,600 in sales.

Grandaddy's Just Like the Fambly Cat debuts at #171 with sales coming in at just under 6,000, while Pure '80s: #1s, a compilation album featuring tracks by the Police, Tears for Fears, Survivor, Mr. Mister, Culture Club and others, claims the #182 slot, with nearly 6,000 scans. Punk Goes '90s, a collection of classics from the grunge era as performed by Eighteen Visions, Bleeding Through, Emery, Plain White T's and others, opens at #190 with 5,200 copies sold, and Suga Free's Just Add Water takes #194 with 5,000 sales.

Hungry?: The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been piquing fans' appetites with their "Dani California" single, but that song has 27 brethren on the two-disc Stadium Arcadium. The guys wrote 38 songs, but the number they whittled the list down to still exceeds the number of tracks on their Greatest Hits and Best Of records combined. The two CDs — nicknamed "Jupiter" and "Mars" — are boosted by a DVD in the limited-edition black-box version of the set, which has a chunky booklet, artwork by the band, an hour-long interview, the "Dani" video and more. Tracks on both versions include "Especially in Michigan," featuring a guitar solo by Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez; "Warlocks," with legend Billy Preston on clavinet; and "She's Only 18."

Lonely: Nick Lachey makes his second solo splash as the aftershocks of his break with Jessica Simpson are still rippling through the tabloids. The writing's on the, er, CD, as they say, on tracks like "I Can't Hate You Anymore," "On Your Own," "You're Not Alone" and — well, on just about all 12 songs. Lachey shares writing credits on most tracks, finding company in British singer/pianist Jamie Cullum on "Ghosts" and Backstreet Boys' Brian Littrell collaborator Dan Muckala on three tunes, including "Outside Looking In." Hang in there, bub.

Korny: There's a reason you haven't heard about Korn's Live & Rare: It's being dished out by the band's former label, Epic, undoubtedly trying to piggyback on Korn's current album and tour promotions. Dubbed a companion piece to 2004's Greatest Hits, Vol.1, the single disc culls seven tracks from the group's gig at New York's CBGB in 2003, two from its 1999 Woodstock performance, plus covers of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1-3)," Metallica's "One" and Cheech & Chong's "Earache My Eye."

Gnarly: Wherever St. Elsewhere is, expect to find astronauts, purple panthers, pink palm trees, gas masks and other scattered military equipment — if the cover of Gnarls Barkley's debut is at all accurate. All songs were written primarily by Brian Burton, a.k.a. Danger Mouse — save a surprising cover of Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone" — while Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, a.k.a. Cee-Lo, mans the mic. Both partners are Grammy nominees, so expect this one to have some extra bounce with the critics.

Agelessly: Gotta love it when soul heroes the Isley Brothers advertise a fresh number as a "new vintage classic." That would be "Gotta Be With You," one of 11 new cuts by the bros that also include "Blast Off," which features and was written, produced and arranged by R. Kelly; the Jermaine Dupri-produced "Gotta Be With You," co-written by Bryan Michael Cox (Mariah Carey, Usher); "Heaven Hooked Us Up," with guitars by Ernest Isley; and the laudably titled "Forever Mackin'," which has the priceless lyric "I rock the grooves and make moves on all the mommies."

She's not as old as the Isleys, but veteran Motown and current Cash Money heavyweight Teena Marie follows up 2004's La Doña with Sapphire. The death of her close companion Rick James is at the root of her 13th record, for which her 14-year-old daughter, Alia Rose, pays more than a couple of visits. Also chiming in are Kurupt and his wife, Gail Gotti; Teena Marie's sister, Queen; plus Smokey Robinson, Gerald Albright and the late James (on "You Blow Me Away").

Fiery: For their fourth studio venture, Eyes Open, Snow Patrol sought some help from singer Martha Wainwright for the scorching duet "Set the Fire to the Third Bar." Oh, and if you've got an all-regions DVD player and some extra motivation, try to hunt down the limited-edition import copy of the record. The accompanying video disc has making-of material plus the video for "You're All I Have."

All in the Family: This week would make Jack and Meg White proud. The Chicago husband-and-wife duo the Like Young step up with their third record, Last Secrets; Mercury Prize-nominated brothers the Electric Soft Parade deliver The Human Body EP — with a bonus track that didn't appear on the U.K. edition; and John Carter Cash contributes liner notes to a re-release of his father's The Johnny Cash Children's Album, which has four previously unissued tracks.

Pony Up is a project that pairs drummer Linsay Wills with her younger sister/ ad-hoc keyboardist Laura Elizabeth. The Montreal group cowboy up with their debut, Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes, which the band tracked with Arcade Fire collaborator Howard Ian Bilerman and engineer Brian Paulson of Beck and Wilco note.

Grandaddy's Just Like the Fambly Cat is in the thick of the incestuous pack, even if the record is more of a signature on their set of divorce papers, while New York bluesman Popa Chubby reveals the art behind Stealing the Devil's Guitar. Accident Experiment is another family matter, so to speak, as the band's United We Fear opus adopts members of P.O.D., Sprung Monkey and Grammatrain.

And the third release by Danielson Famile spinoff Danielson brings together siblings Chris, Greg, John and Satomi and also features Sufjan Stevens and Serena Maneesh. As luck would have it, Pitchfork darlings Serena Maneesh drop their own self-titled record this week, a record the Norwegian group calls an exercise in serenity. Let's hope they don't have any in-laws!

Song Title of the Week:

"Tire Bracelets for Coffin Life" from Zach Hill and Mick Barr's Shred Earthship

Other Notables:

Matmos' The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast: The San Francisco duo's seventh record is really an event in and of itself. With help from Björk, the Kronos Quartet and Antony, Matmos pay homage to 10 notorious deviants, including Germs singer Darby Crash, Valerie Solanas — the woman who shot Andy Warhol — and William S. Burroughs. And it gets even more far-out when they acknowledge Bavarian ruler King Ludwig II and a '60s gay-porn director. Capping the milestone, Matmos enlisted an array of artists — including Ghost World and Art School Confidential mastermind Daniel Clowes — to craft a visual accompaniment for each piece.

Plain White T's' Hey There Delilah: Chicago's latest great "white" hope have already won big with this EP's title track, which has been downloaded more than 40,000 times on iTunes. A live version of the song plus four new numbers recorded with Sean O'Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights) and four additional videos give this EP even more bang for the buck.

Kimya Dawson's Remember That I ♥ You: The Moldy Peach just got married and is expecting a baby this summer, but apparently that's not enough — she found time to birth her fifth solo LP as well. She fumes about the response to the 2004 tsunami in "12/26," declaring, "We'd have 12/26 tattooed across our foreheads if something this atrocious happened on our coast instead." But she saves some vitriol for the White House on "Loose Lips" — after all, what would a new-releases week be these days without some Bush bashing?

Jason Lytle needs to get the hell out of Modesto. Seriously. Like, right away.

He's losing his mind living in his Central California hometown, but, at the moment, he can't leave because he's got a job to do: complete work on the kiss-off album to his city.

The album is titled Just Like the Fambly Cat "because when the family cat dies, he doesn't make a big deal about it," Lytle said. "He does it in a graceful, respectful way with no fanfare. There's no dramatic squealing or rolling around on the floor. He just disappears."

That's sorta what Lytle hopes to do with the album, due in early 2006, which will close the book on a lifetime spent in a town that, he said, "sucks out people's souls." So far, the album is about 75 percent recorded and mixed, with 12 of the 15 or 16 songs ready to go. Among the titles currently being considered are "The Animal World," "Camper Shell Dreams" and "Jeez Louise." Because most of the songs are running five minutes or longer, Lytle expects the album to be filled with "pretty ambitious music, in terms of song length and density."

As a taster, though, Grandaddy will release a seven-song EP called Excerpts From the Diary of Todd Zilla on September 27, which Lytle said morphed from a tossed-off, closet-cleaning stopgap to an unofficial prequel to the next album.

"There are years-long gaps between a lot of these songs, and mostly they were just annoying me because they were sitting around doing nothing," he said. "At the time, I was trying to find a way to occupy my downtime from working on the album, because in the past I tended to work real hard for three weeks and then have a blowout — which was not always the healthiest way to recharge."

In typical Grandaddy fashion, even a group of seemingly disparate songs spanning more than a decade hang together and paint a vivid picture. From the chugging opening notes of "Pull the Curtains," on which Lytle sings, "Pull the curtains on the day/ Sometimes it is the only way ... sometimes you gotta turn it off and walk away," the EP weaves the story of someone who yearns to escape the plastic, strip-mall society that's suffocating him. The song is followed by the six-minute "At My Post," a sprawling, Flaming Lips-like psychedelic carnival with one of the EP's most poignant lines. "Out here on my post I've learned a lot/ I've learned the fruit on the ground is gonna rot," Lytle sings in a falsetto whisper, adding, "There's more ATMs with air conditioning/ Than there are birds on the wing."

"For some reason, they are tied together by the idea of being fed up with your environment," said Lytle, 36. He noted that he didn't intend for the EP to tell a story, but once he began work on it, he started to see the "accidental" common threads.

The EP's title was inspired by a personalized license plate Lytle saw while stuck in traffic on the way to Carson City, Nevada, a few years ago, which he later realized epitomized the kind of Modesto person he can't wait to get away from.

"They're loud and dumb and not afraid to give themselves nicknames," he said. To his twisted satisfaction, he recently saw a plate that beat Zilla in terms of sheer idiocy. "Every now and then you see someone stretch the spelling of a word to get a point across, or because the one they wanted was taken," he said. "This person had a picture of an elk on their car and a license plate that said 'Ilk Huntr,' because 'Elk' was obviously taken. I thought, 'I'm 99 percent sure that person doesn't know what 'ilk' means.' "

He claims to have gone into the EP not caring what it sounded like, but true to his exacting nature, Lytle became obsessed with making the songs sound epic. From the acoustic ballad "Goodbye?" to the Pixies-like punk screaming in "Florida," the songs hardly sound like filler. Add in the accidental recording of a neighbor's lawnmower — which just happened to be in the same pitch as Lytle's piano — on "F--- the Valley Fudge," and you have what Lytle calls the "hors d'oeuvres" to the feast that will be the next album.

"This is the transistor radio versus the surround-sound theater experience you're going to get," he promised.

Dave Matthews, Maroon 5, Kings of Leon and former Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson are among the dozens of artists slated for the three-day Bonnaroo festival.

Part of one of the most eclectic lineups of the summer concert season, they join Bob Dylan, the Dead, Wilco, Damien Rice, Grandaddy, Cut Chemist, David Byrne, the Black Keys, Willie Nelson, moe., Ani DiFranco, Yo La Tengo, My Morning Jacket and String Cheese Incident at the third annual festival, which will again be held on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles south of Nashville, on June 11-13.

Thirty other artists are confirmed thus far, according to a tour spokesperson. Additions are expected to be announced in the coming weeks to bring the total number of acts to more than 60.

Matthews is being billed as "with friends," a crop of pals that will include Trey Anastasio, who's also on board as a solo act. The Phish guitarist played with Matthews on his most recent outing.

More than 80,000 fans came out for last year's festival, 2003's second-highest-grossing concert at a single venue. Its more than $11.5 million was second only to the $38.6 million that Bruce Springsteen raked in from his sold-out 10-show run at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

As in previous years, the show will be filmed for a "Live From Bonnaroo" DVD, expected to drop this fall.

Tickets for the event go on sale February 21.

After two years of waiting, Radiohead finally give fans what they want this week: Hail to the Thief. This more extroverted and politically minded album features the songs "Backdrifts," "2+2=5" and the first single, "There There."

Last year's "American Idol" runner-up throws his hat into the ring this week with his album Justin Guarini. On the record is the single he performed on this year's "American Idol," a cover of "Unchained Melody," plus a duet with Kelly Clarkson called "Timeless."

Pearl Jam are sending stores two live albums from the official bootleg series they've been selling online — one from Perth, Australia, the other from Tokyo. Duran Duran's The Singles '81-'85 box set features all the old, amazing, familiar faces, including "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio," "Reflex" and "Wild Boys."

Fountains of Wayne's third album, Welcome Interstate Managers, finds the New York pop-rockers tackling such pressing subjects as love, work, bad waitresses and clip-on ties. Also out this week is Grandaddy's Sumday, which mostly finds the group navel-gazing about getting their lives together, and Mest's self-titled album, which includes the single "Jaded," featuring Good Charlotte's Benji Madden.

Finally, Joe Budden and Inspectah Deck release Joe Budden and The Movement, respectively, while Annie Lennox gets Bare and the Buzzcocks revisit their Inventory. Now on to the rest of our stock.

Although many of the U.K.'s fabled summer music festivals have been daunted by the rash of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks, V2001 is charging fearlessly ahead with a lineup that includes the Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The recently finalized lineup also includes David Gray, Coldplay and Doves, a V2001 spokesperson said. The massive annual concert will take place at two English locations — Hylands Park, Chelmsford, and Weston Park, Stafforshire — over the weekend of August 18-19, and tickets go on sale Saturday.

The Chili Peppers will headline Saturday's Weston Park show and Sunday's show in Chelmsford. Meanwhile, Coldplay and Texas will co-headline the Saturday gig in Chelmsford before heading over to Weston Park for Sunday night wrap-up duties.

Other bands scheduled to play V2001 include the Charlatans U.K., Muse, Placebo, JJ72, Grandaddy, Toploader, Faithless, the Divine Comedy, Shed Seven and Stairsailor.

After cutting short a brief North American trek in February, Coldplay have announced plans to return to the States later this spring for a more extensive tour, set to kick off May 24 in Boston.

The wistful Brit rock group has tapped Modesto, California's Grandaddy to serve as the supporting act, according to Coldplay's label.

Coldplay pulled the plug on a New York gig on February 16 — and abandoned shows in Boston (February 17), Toronto (February 20) and Miami (February 23) — after lead singer Chris Martin came down with the flu.

Although Martin has rebounded from that illness, manager Phil Harvey has posted a notice on the band's official Web site saying that Martin has been diagnosed with voice exhaustion, causing Coldplay to put a European tour scheduled for April 1 to 18 on ice.

Martin is expected to recover in time for the new dates, and Coldplay still plan to take a short jaunt to America next month to play "Saturday Night Live" on April 7 and a make-up show in New York on April 9.

Coldplay have settled on "Shiver" as the second U.S. single from their debut album, Parachutes, which has sold more than 375,000 copies Stateside.

"Shiver" will be released to radio on April 9, and Coldplay have already completed a video for the track with director Grant Gee, who also filmed the Radiohead tour documentary, "Meeting People Is Easy."

Blonde Redhead In, Grandaddy Out For Noise Pop SF

Art-rock trio Blonde Redhead will replace Grandaddy at the 2001 Noise Pop San Francisco music fest, as the latter band has withdrawn because of frontman Jason Lytle's recurring knee problem, according to the event's publicist.

Blonde Redhead will now join Superchunk, Jimmy Eat World, Creeper Lagoon, Girls Against Boys, Mark Eitzel, the Minus 5 and Damien Jurado for Noise Pop SF, which will feature more than 60 acts performing at six Frisco clubs between February 27 and March 4.

Other artists confirmed for Noise Pop include Beulah, Spoon, Zen Guerrilla, Pedro the Lion, Alien Crime Syndicate, Holly Golightly, Jet Black Crayon and the Preston School of Industry, which features ex-Pavement guitarist Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg.

As for Grandaddy, the Modesto, California, band wrapped up its U.K. tour in London on Wednesday (February 7), after which Lytle plans to take the next two months off to rest his ailing knee, according to a publicist for Noise Pop.

During the break, Grandaddy guitarist Jim Fairchild and drummer Aaron Burtch will join Giant Sand for that group's European tour with PJ Harvey, an outing that is slated for February 25 through March 14 and overlaps the dates for Noise Pop SF.

Despite Grandaddy's absence, several of this year's Noise Pop bands are gearing up for their first opportunity to play the indie-rock festival.

"It's gonna be wild," Spoon frontman Britt Daniel said of the annual fest, first held in 1993. "I love how at the Noise Pop festival, unlike some other music festivals, they actually pay the bands."
One of the busiest performers at Noise Pop SF will be Scott McCaughey, who will pull double duty on March 3 to play separate sets with both his primary group, the Young Fresh Fellows, as well as his side project, the Minus 5, which features R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

"This will be the first Noise Pop appearance for the Young Fresh Fellows," McCaughey said, "though we've been asked a number of times before. I hate saying no, so saying yes was very fulfilling. I expect lots of fanfare and pageantry as the band struts up onto the hallowed Bottom of the Hill stage, carrying me in a large tub of whiskey."
"I am looking forward to seeing how many people will be at the show," singer/songwriter Jurado, also making his Noise Pop debut, said. "The last time I was [in San Francisco], I played to a packed crowd at Bottom of the Hill, and a friend of mine said that it was rare that anyone packs the place."
For the second consecutive year, 2001 Noise Pop SF will also encompass a film festival, a roster and screening schedule for which is still being hammered out.

Passes for the 2001 Noise Pop SF are available for $100 through TicketWeb, and include entrance to any and all shows and films, as well as the Noise Pop Educational Series of guest speakers.

Shortly after wrapping this year's edition of Noise Pop SF, organizers will turn their focus to planning and lining up artists for a Noise Pop Chicago festival, set for May 9–13.
