The only thing that comes between Korn's Jonathan Davis and his couch is a kilt, and the only thing standing between you and that very same couch is a winning bid.

StarTrader, a new online auction site, also boasts clothes right out of Tommy Lee's closet and a drum machine used by Orgy drummer Bobby Hewitt.

So how does a Web site only 3 months old have so much cool stuff? Well, it helps that it was launched by Hewitt himself.

Not only does he have connections, Hewitt has been around the rock 'n' roll block enough times to realize how much stuff artists accumulate.

"Bobby wanted to create a way for artists to auction and sell stuff that they had collected from years of touring and being involved in music and entertainment," StarTrader co-founder Skip McNevin explained. "Many artists like Bobby have tons of stuff in their houses, but don't feel comfortable using eBay or Yahoo auctions."

Since StarTrader works closely with groups like the Musicians' Assistance Program, the Domestic Violence Intervention Service and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the site also gives artists an easy way to make charitable donations.

"They are thrilled to help others, while at the same time safely selling their extra stuff and in some cases making some extra space in a closet or bedroom at home," McNevin said.

Aside from Davis' couch, which at press time was going for $800 and closes Tuesday, StarTrader is also auctioning an autographed Linkin Park poster, Go-Go's CD and Meat Loaf autobiography. Items from Kid Rock, Blondie, Godsmack, Lit and Jimmy Page are also available, though McNevin's favorite item is an autographed backstage pass from Sugar Ray drummer Stan Frazier for a concert sponsored by none other than Enron.

Hewitt came up with the idea for StarTrader in the spring of 2000 and got it off the ground when he met McNevin, a former Web designer and television producer for NASA, at an Orgy show.

Hewitt, McNevin and entertainment attorney Richard Joseph spent more than a year studying auction sites and building StarTrader before launching it in December.

The Web site is centered around the celebrity memorabilia auction but also features links to Web sites of participating artists and charities and a collector-to-collector marketplace where anyone can auction items.

Although only about a quarter of the roughly 200 items on StarTrader are from celebrities (actors and athletes are also auctioning items), that's the driving force behind the Web site. "Everyone who has bought an item from a celebrity has sent some incredibly great feedback about the site, working with us, and how cool it was to get something that used to be owned by their favorite artist," McNevin said.

While close friends and family of Joey Ramone honored the punk-rock icon at his funeral Tuesday, other music figures spoke out publicly about the importance and influence of the Ramones frontman.

Ramone died of lymphatic cancer on Easter Sunday at age 49 (see "Punk Pioneer Joey Ramone Dead At 49") and was buried Tuesday at Hillside Cemetery in Lyndhurst, New Jersey (see "Joey Ramone Laid To Rest").

"I can firmly say that rock 'n' roll will not be the same without Joey Ramone alive," Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said Tuesday. "The one thing no one will ever be able to [capture] was how cool he was. He was rock 'n' roll coolness. The glasses. The leather jacket. And he barely moved a finger. He just stood there."
Armstrong first heard the Ramones at age 9 when he saw their movie "Rock 'n' Roll High School." "To me, what I saw was the perfect rock band," he said. "They had songs that just stuck in your head, just like a hammer they banged right into your brain."
Years later, Armstrong named his first son, now 6, Joey. Green Day drummer Tre Cool named his daughter, born a month after Armstrong's son, Ramona. Green Day recently recorded a cover of the Ramones' "Outsider" to use as a B-side.

"There's a real romance to the Ramones," Armstrong said. "Those lyrics. It wasn't just about being a meathead punk-rocker. It was also a great date too. If you think about every person who has been inspired by the Ramones, directly and indirectly, you're talking about half of what you hear on the radio today. A lot of that has to do with the spirit and passion Joey Ramone always, always had. He never was jaded. He was never one of those guys who would go around and say, 'More should have happened to me.'"
Among the bands the Ramones inspired were U2. "In Dublin in 1977 when I saw Joey singing I knew nothing else mattered to him. Pretty soon nothing else mattered to me," the Irish rock band's singer, Bono, said in a statement released Wednesday.

"The Ramones stopped the music world long enough for U2 and the other garage bands to get on," Bono said. "They invented something ... the idea that your limitations were what made you ... your street, your neighborhood, the clothes on your back, your record collection was the size of your universe."
Bono called Ramone in his hospital room on Good Friday, and U2's song "In a Little While" was playing in the room when Ramone died two days later.

Even closer to Joey, at least at one time, was Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone (born Douglas Colvin). Although the two had not spoken for several years, Dee Dee said he has been mourning the loss of his old pal.

"I know it was really hard being in the Ramones, and I don't think I appreciated them enough when I was in them, and I took advantage of a lot of things," Dee Dee said. "Whatever the situation, we all need each other. With me, John and Joey, it was a real good combination, and without us together, it's not going to be the same."
Joey was a hardworking musician, Dee Dee said, who should have stopped recording and working with other bands when he fell ill more than a year ago. Instead, Ramone finished his first solo album (see "Joey Ramone Solo Album Due Later This Year").

"It's hard when you're a musician to understand that," Dee Dee said. "You don't understand it when you're sick, and you just don't want to stop, so I'm sure he probably felt that way."
Joe Strummer, singer of influential British punk band the Clash, said he listened to the entire Ramones catalog in his Somerset, England, home after he heard of Ramone's death.

"This music not only stands the test of time, it totally obliterates everything before it and after it," Strummer said in a statement. "He made the primetime 6 o'clock newscast in Britain, triggering a strange sense of pride in all the rock 'n' rollers watching, as if the aboveground world was finally going to accord Joey the status he always deserved."
Strummer got to know Ramone when their bands played together throughout the late '70s.

"Offstage, just hanging out, he was the funniest kind of wisecracking guy. Very sharp, with a strictly dry sense of humor," Strummer said. "It was all kind of hidden behind his shyness, but then it would suddenly pop out."
Lemmy Kilmister, singer of English metal band Motörhead, met Joey in the late '70s. Motörhead recorded a song called "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." — which the Ramones later covered — and Kilmister appeared onstage at one of the punk band's final shows.

"It's a bad day for rock and roll, it's a bad day for me," Lemmy said in a statement. "He was one of the most underrated artists. He understood rock and roll."
Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go's said she saw the Ramones live 50 times or more. "They were one of the most influential bands for me," she said in a statement. "[Joey] was so unique and wonderful."
Added Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt in a statement: "Thanks always comes a day late and a dollar short, but my respect has and will always be there for the band that showed me that simple songs and a simple life could make you happy. ... And the kid in the Ramones T-shirt will always be cool."

With the passing of Joey Ramone on Sunday, music fans lost a genius who changed the world, according to the many artists — from Blink-182 to the Go-Go's — who were influenced by the lanky, leather jacket-clad godfather of punk rock.

"I wish I could have met him and told him what a huge influence he had on my life, and what an inspiration his music was, and what a genius he really was," Blink-182 singer/bassist Mark Hoppus said. "The Ramones came out at a time when music wasn't being done like that, and they came out with three-chord pop-punk just played exactly the way they wanted it to be. Without the Ramones, there wouldn't have been three generations of great punk-rock music, and there certainly wouldn't have been a Blink-182."
Ramone, born Jeffrey Hyman, died of lymphatic cancer, a disease that attacks the body's ability to fight infection (see "Punk Pioneer Joey Ramone Dead At 49").

The Ramones are considered the first true punk band, though their catchy melodies, irresistibly inane lyrics and rock and roll attitude inspired artists of all genres.

"They were my first real influence, a bunch of local kids from Queens that made me realize that I could actually start a band myself," the Beastie Boys' Adam Horovitz said.

Joey Ramone was more than just the founder and frontman for the group, he was an icon to his peers, who range from New York art-rockers Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Television to West Coast rebel-rousers X, Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys.

"He was the most important person of the punk scene," X singer Exene Cervenka said. "More than those other bands, he was the most important person. And he was the symbol, he was definitely the symbol of the punk thing."
The Ramones changed popular culture tremendously, Cervenka said, and have the best legacy of any punk band.

"The best thing about them was that they didn't mean to do it," Cervenka said. "The Ramones were just a band, playing music and having fun, and [yet] it was so important."
To many, including former Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph Records founder Brett Gurewitz, the Ramones, armed with classics like "Rock 'n' Roll High School" and "I Wanna Be Sedated," were the first punk band they ever heard.

"It was hearing the Ramones that made me want to be in a band," Gurewitz said. "Joey Ramone is the most influential person ever in rock 'n' roll. He was a beautiful, loving, funny, intelligent man, and he will be missed."
Go-Go's guitarist Charlotte Caffey first saw the Ramones play with Blondie in 1977 at Los Angeles' Whisky a Go-Go. She went to four shows in two nights.

"I had a life-altering experience," she said. "These shows ignited something inside of me that led me to write all those songs for the first Go-Go's record. And to this day, when I hear Joey singing a Ramones song, I am transported to an altered state."
Ramone did more than just perform. Hilly Kristal, owner of New York's renowned CBGB club — itself an important factor in the birth of punk music — said the singer spent his later years working with young musicians and keeping punk music alive in New York.

"Joey lived a good life, and he gave back as much as he could," Kristal said. "He tried to help a lot of new bands. He would throw his birthday parties and have them play, and he would get up and sing with them."
Kristal said Joey and his bandmates were one of the first underground bands to find other ways to get their music out.

"Joey wrote very catchy songs that were used in commercials and movies," he said. "Though they never sold millions of records, the Ramones played before crowds of 60 and 70,000."
As a person, Ramone was known for his kindness and had many friends.

"Joey was a sweet guy, a really sweet guy," Cervenka said. "Every time I hung out with him ... he was just always really happy to see you, really friendly. You felt part of [something]. You felt the punk thing was a family."
Added rocker Joan Jett: "He was the best person, a terrific artist, a wonderful friend, and a huge influence on my music and career."

It seems that God and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong are smiling on the Go-Go's and their punk rock past.

Armstrong and the Go-Go's have co-written a new track, titled "Unforgiven," which will be released March 20 as the first single off God Bless the Go-Go's, the girl group's first new studio album in 17 years.

The track should provide the Go-Go's — singer Belinda Carlisle, guitarists Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey, bassist Kathy Valentine and drummer Gina Schock — with an opportunity to touch base again with their punk roots. The Go-Go's initially formed in Hollywood, California, in the late '70s as a novelty punk outfit, and they were considered peers of such seminal acts as X, Black Flag, and the Germs.

"[Green Day were] influenced by us, and we ended up getting re-influenced by them," Wiedlin said of the collaboration with Armstrong on "Unforgiven," for which the Green Day frontman also performs backing vocals and guitar.

Other new tracks slated for God Bless the Go-Go's, which was co-produced by Paul Kolderie and Sean Slade, include "Daisy Chain," "Stuck in My Car," "Vision of Nowness" and "Apology."
God Bless the Go-Go's is the group's long awaited follow-up to its 1984 swan song, Talk Show. Wiedlin left the group a few months after the album's release, prompting the band to call it a day in 1985.

Carlisle and Wiedlin both ventured out into solo careers with varying degrees of success — Carlisle had a #1 single in 1987 with "Heaven Is a Place on Earth", while Wiedlin had a #9 hit, "Rush Hour", a year later.

Despite an acrimonious breakup, the Go-Go's have staged several reunions over the years, including one in 1990 to support a best-of album, Greatest, and another four years later, to record several new cuts for Return to the Valley of the Go-Go's, a double-disc compilation.

Most recently, the Go-Go's re-formed for a tour last summer (see "Go-Go's Go on Tour With B-52's, Psychedelic Furs"), and in spring last year they released another anthology, The Go-Go's Collection.
God Bless the Go-Go's is due May 15 on Beyond Records.

Go-Go's "We Got The Beat"

The year 2000 is finding '80s pop faves the Go-Go's as busy as they've ever been.

According to singer-guitarist and founding Go-Go Jane Wiedlin, this year the groundbreaking all-female combo (which formed over 20 years ago) will be active on tour, in the studio, on television, and even on the literary scene.

First up on the group's list of endeavors will be a special edition of VH1's "Behind The Music" devoted to the band.

"'Behind The Music' approached us about six months ago," Wiedlin told MTV News. "First they interviewed each of the bandmembers separately. Each of the interviews was an all-day thing, so it was hours and hours of footage. Then they go to all your colleagues and friends, people you worked with in the past, and they interview all of them.

"Now they changed producers, and the new producer wants to shoot more of us, all of us together. I personally have been trying to tell them everything I can, but the main thing is they
want some 'juicy dirt' or whatever," Wiedlin said, laughing.

"It's funny, because there's five of us, and everyone has their own opinion about what should be made public," the guitarist said with regard to the band's "juicy dirt." "I guess I'm kind of an exhibitionist, because I'm like, 'I don't care what they know about me.' The others are more private. We haven't seen the piece, so we have no idea what they will include [in the final show]."

In addition to the usual "juicy dirt," for the first time "Behind The Music" will release a CD in conjunction with the show, with the disc featuring the music that can be heard during the hour-long Go-Go's program.

"Along with all the music, they'll have rare photos and new liner notes and all that kind of stuff about us," Wiedlin added.

As far as Go-Go's music is concerned, there's more than reissues on the way. Late this summer, the band will head to the studio to record its first full album since 1984's "Talk
Show."

"We started writing in around September," Wiedlin explained, "kind of taking our time and writing a lot and throwing out a lot, because obviously it's important that it be really good. It's really cool, because right now Belinda (singer Carlisle, who lives in Europe) is in town, and we are teaching her the songs. We'll be recording by August, which means we should have a spring release."

The new Go-Go's record will be released on Beyond Music (home of the recent Blondie album, "No Exit") and is likely to be titled "Vision Of Nowness," a phrase which has a most impressive source.

"It's kind of a classic story," Wiedlin began. "Belinda actually got to meet the late, great Sammy Davis, Jr., and when he met her, he said to her, 'You are a vision of nowness.' We always really loved that. It's like, 'Wow, Sammy!' It doesn't get any better than that."

Between now and the start of recording the new album, the group will be busy with a summer tour
that will take the band to amphitheaters across the U.S. and Canada with the B-52's which, according to Wiedlin, is "always super fun." (Dates for the tour are expected to be released this week.)

Despite the current trend toward live shows being more about choreography and production, the Go-Go's are more about delivering a straight-up rock and roll show.

"It's just us," Wiedlin said of group's live offering. "We've never really been into having extra people or anything. We've never really had choreography, or staging, or extra musicians. This summer we are going to have a few costume changes, because we decided it would be funny. But basically we are a rock band, kind of no-frills. People have a lot of fun when they come see us, and that's really what we are all about."

In addition to all the other activities, the band is also planning to tell its story via a tell-all autobiography and possible film project.

"We've had a lot of interest from both
book publishers and movie producers," Wiedlin said. "The point we are at right now is we have several publishers fighting for the book. We want to write the book first, and it will be a juicy, fun, tell-all-type book, and do the movie after that. We were trying for a while to do the book and movie concurrently, but it's way too confusing.

"It is a really great story," the guitarist offered in reference to the Go-Go's saga. "And what I think makes it interesting is, it hasn't really been repeated. There hasn't been a bunch of successful girl bands.

"I guess [the recently disbanded] Luscious Jackson have done pretty well, and L7, but they haven't done as well as they should," she considered. "We wrote all our own tunes and played our own instruments, and we still do. I guess our story is pretty unique."

Go-Gos Reunion A Go, But Bangles Still In Dry-Dock

Today brings good news and bad news for those hungry for comebacks by 80s girl groups.
The good news... The Go-Gos will be mounting a reunion tour this summer, possibly with another big 80s act on the bill. The group, whose guitarist Charlotte Caffey has a credit on the latest Hole album, also has a bio film in the works too with Ted and Amanda Demme producing.
The bad news... Reports that the Bangles will also soon be mounting a reunion are "greatly exaggerated" according to guitarist Vicky Peterson. Peterson says that she and her sister (drummer Debbie Peterson) and singer Susannah Hoffs are getting together to write some songs on an informal basis, and that the group has been invited to join the third annual Lilith Fair this summer. However, Peterson says that a reunion will not happen unless Bangles bassist Michael Steele agrees to take part, and she hasn't.
We'll keep you posted.
