Amy Winehouse Reveals Dream Rap Collabos In Rare MTV Interview

From the moment she burst onto the international scene with "Rehab," Amy Winehouse — the British belter who died Saturday in her London apartment — was embraced by the hip-hop community, and she embraced it right back. It wasn't enough for her to get Jay-Z or Ghostface Killah to appear on remixes of her hits (which she did); she wanted to work with them, record proper tracks with them.

This was nothing new, of course: Even before she broke big with her Back to Black album, Winehouse was bringing hip-hop into the fold. She recorded her debut disc, Frank, with producer Salaam Remi (who had worked extensively with Nas and on the Fugees' epochal The Score). And her early single "In My Bed" sampled the iconic "Apache" beat from Nas' Remi-produced "Made You Look."

But, finally riding high on the success of Black, Winehouse hoped to use some of her newfound clout to finally realize some of her hip-hop dreams, as she told MTV News in a May 2007 interview.

MTV celebrates Amy Winehouse's music with a special show this Wednesday.

"There's so many people I'd love to work with: Nas, Mos Def. I'd love to work with Busta Rhymes, I'd love to work with Rah Digga ... I love them," she said. "I learned a lot of stuff about how to write songs from people like that. I just really like them, and if they like my stuff, cool. ... If they want to do a track, I'd love to."

Of course, she'd go on to actually make some of those projects happen, in one form or another. She recorded a version of "Love is a Losing Game" with Mos Def during a 2007 performance on MTV — a performance that will re-air on the channel Wednesday (July 27) at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, as part of a tribute special to Winehouse's musical legacy. She also made headlines when she stepped out with Nas (about whom she sang on the Black track "Me & Mr. Jones") in London last year.

Winehouse was reportedly set to collaborate with Digga on the female rapper's Sucker Free project, though it's unclear whatever became of the team-up. And in 2008, Busta famously joked that Winehouse wouldn't return his phone calls.

Celebrate Amy Winehouse on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, when MTV will air an encore presentation of a performance she taped in the MTV studios in 2007.

Ghostface Killah Sued For Sampling 'Iron Man' Theme Song

Wu-Tang Clan rapper has long had a fascination with the superhero.

The Wu-Tang Clan has never been shy about flaunting their influences: from martial arts to La Cosa Nostra, chess and, of course, superhero comics. But member Ghostface Killah's love of one Marvel icon in particular, Iron Man, is putting the Shaolin rapper in some hot legal water.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, composer Jack Urbont is suing Sony Music Entertainment and Ghostface (born Dennis Coles) over claims the rapper illegally sampled his "Iron Man Theme" from the 1960s "The Marvel Super Heroes" TV show.

Ghostface, who named his 1996 solo debut Ironman, and whose many aliases include Ironman and the superhero's alter ego, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (which Ghostface spells Starks), has long had a fascination with the character. But Urbont claims in his suit that two songs on Ghostface's second album, 2000's Supreme Clientele copied "verbatim" the "Theme" he wrote for the show.

Urbont is an actor and Broadway producer who has also written theme music for everything from daytime soaps such as "General Hospital" to music for "That '70s Show" and "The View." The Reporter speculated that Urbont's suit came so long after the album's release because the composer "may have grown tired of seeing Killah's name attached to his music on the Internet."

The character has obviously gotten a much higher profile over the past few years thanks to the two "Iron Man" movies. In fact, one of Ghostface's songs, "Slept on Tony with Dirt," appeared in the 2008 "Iron Man" movie and the rapper appears in a deleted scene on the DVD version of the film.

The case is described as a typical copyright infringement claim, but the Reporter noted that Urbont's lawyers also threw in an unfair competition claim. "Defendant Ghostface is also known for the nickname 'Tony Starks,' which is a take-off of the name 'Tony Stark,' Iron Man's real name and true identity. In this way, Defendants' use of Urbont's 'Iron Man Theme' gives them a substantial commercial advantage by linking Ghostface to Iron Man without paying for it," the allegation reads.

A spokesperson for the rapper had no comment on the lawsuit.

'If you're a ride-or-die Wu-Tang fan, and you know where we coming from, you're gonna enjoy this one,' Rae says.

Although Raekwon, Method Man and Ghostface Killah are putting out the Wu Massacre album together, you shouldn't consider the trio a group — their group will always be the Wu-Tang Clan.

"We're not doing this to win. We're not doing this to bring Wu-Tang to the forefront. We're not doing this to save the group. We're a part of the group," Method Man said recently in New York. "This album could have been done by Deck, U-God and GZA. Either/or, it's still Wu-Tang. The bottom line with this LP, it was something fans always requested. It's like, what else was we doing? It was a given. Hopefully, we can all get back in the studio and get enough time to really work on an LP."

Although Meth and his fellow Clansmen were excited to make Wu Massacre, they didn't get as much time locked in the lab as they wanted. Def Jam was eager to get the album out to ride the wave of the critical success for Meth and Redman's Blackout 2, Ghostface's Wizard of Poetry and Rae's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Pt. II.

"Def Jam put a rush on it," Meth said. "We didn't have a lot of time to work on it. We recorded with no budget. It is what it is. We did this for the fans. It felt good to get in the studio with Rae and Ghost. The future looks bright."

The LP features the three swordsmen and a host of guests, including Ghost's son Sun God and Method Man's close friend Street Life. Only a handful of songs, however, feature Meth, Rae and Ghost together.

"It's a couple of joints on there you're gonna like," Rae said. "We're not all on the same joint, because we think that's kinda corny. 'Let him get his off. Y'all two do that. I don't gotta be there.' Or 'We do that. You don't have to be there.' It's an album to get back on the mic and do what we do over hot beats. When you think of Wu, you look at it as, we make hot albums. We don't make great singles that's gonna take off. We always focus on the body of the work. We focus on the album and make sure you get a chance to vibe with us for an hour or so."

Meth, Rae and Ghost didn't get a lot of time to spend in the studio because of their individual schedules. Some songs were pulled from unreleased recordings, and Ghostface acted as the main curator for the album.

"A lot of the production was dealt with through us playing phone tag," Rae said. "Ghost had a lot to do with really binding the album together. It's a great album. I think the people gonna enjoy it. One thing about me that I could say is, lyrically, it's never been a problem for us to deliver. It's great production on the album. RZA is on there. A couple of other soldiers we work with is on there. If you're a ride-or-die Wu-Tang fan, and you know where we coming from, you're gonna enjoy this one."

One of the LP's immediate standouts is "Meth vs. Chef 2." Over dramatic horns, Rae and Meth trade verses, trying to be iller than the other.

"Sh-- on your crew, n---as it's Wu, rap athlete/ The track shoe bigger than you," Meth rhymes on the record. "I sneeze on the track and get atchu."

Rae answers: "Y'all rappers gonna feel my pain/ But the other way around, when it's going down/ I'm gonna reign."

'I wasn't sure what rapper would be willing or take the challenge,' she says of hearing Ghost's remix.

Riding the success of her single "It Kills Me," Melanie Fiona has won an opening spot on Alicia Keys' Freedom Tour, a Grammy nomination and the #1 R&B record for two weeks running.

"Every artist wants to have success, whatever their definition is of success. In my mind, I said I always wanted to have a Grammy nomination, I wanted to have a #1 record at Billboard, and now I just found out that 'It Kills Me' is #1 two weeks in a row."

Fiona said the song, which was co-written and produced by Andrea Martin, was inspired by an unhealthy relationship. Fiona knew the song could be a vessel to express herself, so she poured her emotions into it, hoping people could relate.

"I knew people would feel it, and it's just a great thing to know that I'm not alone in what I go through," Fiona said.

Little did she know that a certain Wu-Tang Clan member would be able to relate as well. Recently, a remix of the song featuring Ghostface Killah has received a lot of radio airplay, and Fiona said she was shocked to hear him on the song.

"I heard it, and I couldn't believe it, because I never even in my mind could have imagined that anybody would jump on the record," she marveled. "Because it's a ballad, and it's a very, like, brokenhearted song. I wasn't sure what rapper would be willing or take the challenge, because it would be a challenge. So to hear Ghostface on it is amazing."

Busta Rhymes, Raekwon and Talib Kweli jumped on Fiona's first single, "Give It to Me Right," and she is still amazed that other artists are inspired by her work. But she was especially impressed by what Ghost did with her ballad.

"I also feel like dudes now feel like, 'OK, I can rock to this song, because Ghostface is on it,' " she laughed.

"I think it's a great idea," RZA said of Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man teaming up. "I was pushing that idea to them years ago. Back in the day, we was gonna have a branch called 'The Brothers From the Grain' that was kinda those guys right there. I'm gonna see Meth tonight in the studio to see if I could add on something to that project. Add some depth to it. They are three of the most prolific voices in Wu-Tang. Ghost would call it 'Three the Hard Way Doing Their Thing.' "

RZA says the Clan are at a point where everybody is strong individually, which makes it even greater when they combine.

"We're at a period of life, if anybody from Wu-Tang needs me, I'm there for them," he elaborated. "Everybody has grown and matured to where we don't need each other. ... Everybody is now independent, and sometimes we become what I call interdependent. We don't need each other, but it's good to work with each other and use each other's energy for the whole brand and the whole Clan. U-God reached out to me and said, 'I want you to produce my whole album.' I'm like, 'It's all good.' When I worked [on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II] with Raekwon, he was like, 'How much you gonna charge me?' I said, 'It's on the house, baby. Just give me my publishing. My rights. But you don't have to give me no money to work with you, baby.' "

We got all three to confirm it. Ghostface Killah and Raekwon told us first, and on Wednesday, during the taping of VH1's "Hip Hop Honors," Method Man co-signed what his brothers promised: All three are making an LP together.

"It feels great," Meth said about the partial Wu-Tang Clan album. "Rae got the album out, Ghost is coming with his album, and all three of us got the album together. And you hearing it here first. I ain't never said it on tape. ... Method, Raekwon, Ghostface — new album."

Behind The Beats: Havoc

After producing classic albums as a part of Mobb Deep and bone-chilling beats for the likes of Nas and 50 Cent, you can't blame Havoc for wanting to take a break.

"This time around, I'm kind of focused on my lyrics more," Hav told us recently while promoting his new mixtape, From Now On.

The Queens-bred beatsmith is still gonna make that murder music. But with Mobb Deep partner Prodigy still serving a prison bid, Hav decided it's time for him to step up his wordplay.

"I'm doing a lot of the production on the mixtape," he explained. "[But] I been so involved with production that a lot of times you kind of get lax on the lyrics, when it comes to a producer/artist. But I really wanted to focus on my lyrics, because that's where I started, and that's where my passion is at."

Good thing Havoc's pen packs a punch that hits as hard as his beats.

"What's up, P, hope all is well, I should have write you sooner/ But since our last visit, I been fighting off them rumors," he spits on "Letter P," a personal ode to his partner in rhyme. "Me and you, we not rocking like we used to/ My loyalty is strong, and I don't feel like I got to prove to you."

"That was just to clear up a couple of rumors," Hav said. "It's between me and my homie."

The two vets are still tight and have been going strong for more than 15 years. In fact, Hav said he and Prodigy plan to reunite for a new Mobb album as soon as P gets home. The duo are still signed to G-Unit, he said, and P's been writing while doing his time. Hav, though, said he wasn't sure what direction they would take on the next project just yet. That's not something that they talk about during visits.

"We're definitely gonna work on the next Mobb Deep album, I'm ready for that," Hav said. " 'Cause he's [still] a beast, lyrically. And I just miss my partner. That's gonna be one of the first things we work on. I'm not really sure [if we're gonna talk about his time away]. I can't say if that will be reflected in the next project. I do know that it's gonna be crazy. I can guarantee that."

Hail to the Chef. Raekwon will debut in SoundScan's top five with his classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II. Rae popped up at the VMA Radio Forum over the weekend, and we had the opportunity to ask him about a longstanding rumor that at one time, Diddy wanted to sign him and Ghostface Killah to Bad Boy.

"I heard that too," Rae said. "We did a show at the Palladium [years back], and Puff had security with him that was from Staten Island. When we got back to Staten Island, we bump into the kid, and he told us while he was up there performing, Puff said, 'I need them two. What I gotta do?' He was excited about working with us [and] signing us too. I don't know why it ain't happen, either. You never know. Maybe he may want to do that now. I'm independent, baby. So let's get it right. Let's cut them checks, Puff. We know what time it is!"

The Wu-Tang/ Diddy/ Bad Boy connection has spawned a lot of hits from "The What" to the remixes of "All I Need" and "Special Delivery." Diddy and Rae did hook up last week for the album-release party for Cuban Linx II. Diddy hosted the party at Manhattan's Santos Party House.

"One day I'm in the car, I'm just driving," he said. "I get a call from Puff out of the blue. He's like, 'Yo, I wanna congratulate you on your album.' That's what's up. One thing led to another, and I told him about the party. He said, 'If I'm in town, I'm coming through.' I said, 'Would you like to come through and host?' Because you know what kinda dude Diddy is. He's like our Sammy Davis Jr. He's done so much on all levels, [so] I just asked. What's wrong with asking? He was like, 'I'mma check my schedule, and if it permits for it to happen, I'm there for you.' Next thing you know, he called me 48 hours later: 'It's on. I'm with you.' "

Wonder if he works for Time Warner or Direct TV? Fabolous pulled a Jim Carrey and plays the Cable Guy on Ghostface Killah's new record "The Guest House" from Ghostdini: The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City.

On the song, Ghost is frantic when his girl turns up missing. He calls around and then goes searching. He goes to the guest house on his estate and finds the lady with Fabolous as he's laying cable. Verbal jousting ensues between Fab's and Ghostface's characters.

"I was the cable guy in there," Fab explained. "I happened to come up on Ghostface's girl. Ghost reached out to me and said, 'I got this dope joint I wanna get you on.' It's kinda like, you know, how R. Kelly used to have those story joints with Mr. Biggs. I was like 'OK, cool.' As long as the joint sounds dope, which I can only expect from Ghost, and it came through. It was good."

Ghostface Launches Wizard of Poetry LP With 'Baby' Video

Video follows a relationship from courtship to parenthood.

Gandalf, Orko, Richard Pryor in 1978, and now comes another great wizard: Ghostface Killah. The Wu-Tang Clan member drops his Wizard of Poetry LP on September 29, and has launched the project with the single "Baby." The record is all about the evolution of a relationship, with Mr. Tony Starks having a baby with his wisdom, a.k.a. his girlfriend. They go from meeting to having great expectations for a little bundle of joy. Ghost and singer Raheem DeVaughn recently shot the video across the street from Rucker Park in New York's Harlem neighborhood.

"The concept is just how I tell the story," Ghost explained on his tour bus. "I ran up on the corner, on these two wizes [ wisdoms], I snatched one. I was throwing my darts. She was fronting at first. She messed around and gave me the number after a while. By the time the next verse comes, that's my girl. She's pregnant in the crib, checking on her daddy. We on the horn, by the end of the thing, she's gonna have the baby. It's all based around the hook: 'If it's a boy, his swag and diddy-bop will be just like mine/ If it's a girl, just like her momma, she gonna be so fly.' It's focused on the kids right now. Just regular summer day. Sun is shining, nothing too glossy."

DeVaughn, who sings the hook, wrote the chorus after the album's A&R rep, Lenny Santiago, pulled him into the project.

"Ghostface Killah! Wu-Tang!" DeVaughn yelled out during a break from the shoot.

"Real talk, it's an honor, some of the people I been blessed to work with thus far in my career, and perform with and tour with," DeVaughn said about appearing on the song. "Ultimately, if you put in hard work in this game, the people you look up to and admire ultimately become your peers, [and] your peers sometimes become fans of your work. It's deep. I've been able to play both sides of the fences, doing R&B and the hip-hop: UGK records, Talib Kweli records, my demographic is pretty diverse."

In real life, Ghost has his own babies. His teenager, Sun God, has appeared on records as well as live performances with him.

"It's glory, B," Ghost said. "It's glory to see your reflection on the stage doing what you do. And that's that. Every man, if they doing good, wants their son to be just like them or better than him. It's a blessing. He's still my baby. Still young to me, but he's learning.

"I got a few kids," he added. "As a dad, I try my best. I'm always in and out. I try to stay close to them and give them as much knowledge as I could give them. When I was young, I never got the 'I love you's and the hugs I give my kids. I'm glad I'm here to tell them I love them, and they can say I love you back."

Celebrity Favorite: Ghostface Killah

Last week, we brought you Ghostface Killah talking about making an album with Mary J. Blige. This week, Ghost gets more in form with what you're used to: He's down to do an LP with his brothers.

While there's no word on an LP featuring the entire Wu-Tang Clan, Tony Starks has high hopes for a trio opus starring himself, Raekwon and Method Man.

"We ain't got no title for it, but they been wanting to do that for a while, maybe like the past two years," Ghost said recently in New York. "I was always with it. I think that right now, everybody is in that position to do it now. I think within the next two months, everybody will start collecting beats. Everybody goes in — he's got four songs, I got four songs, [Meth] has four. Start coming around like that and seeing what we can do. Make a little phat tight one. I told Meth the other day, 'It's gotta be phat and tight. We don't need 16, 19 joints on there. Nah, nah, nah — 12 phat bullets. We do it like that, and that's it.' That's gonna happen soon. It will probably be out by the end of the year or January, and that's that."

You will get a preview of what Rae, Ghost and Meth can do on the upcoming Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II LP. Ghost recorded around 10 songs for the album. (It's still not confirmed how many of the records will appear on the final LP.)

"Rae got darts," Ghost promised. "His beats were up to par. He was doing what he gotta do. It's good, man. People wanna see that. Rae's been like, 'Cuban Linx coming, Cuban Linx is coming' for years. Mutha----as was like, 'Yo, when is it coming, B?' Now he's finally finished it, and he's gonna put it out September 8."

Ghost's The Wizard of Poetry is coming out this year, but he doesn't have a concrete date yet.

"If it's not steaming," he said of his buzz, "we can't put it out until it's right."

Ghost worked with some of his favorite R&B stars from Estelle to John Legend on his new disc. The first single is "Baby" with Raheem DeVaughn.

Fire Starter: Trife Diesel

Better known by fans of Ghostface Killah's Theodore Unit as Trife Da God, Trife Diesel is finally getting his own thing off with the just-released Better Late Than Never.

"My brother Ghost is on there, my brother [Shawn] Wigz is on there," Trife told us earlier this week. "It's a nice classical album. It's not a mainstream album, but it's more me, Trife Da God."

"My brother put me on to Trife," Ghost said of how the two crossed paths. "This little dude, he had an ill swag, he was clean-cut. He was ahead of his time, up to date, and his darts were clean. His darts were illmatic. I sent him down to Florida with me when we was doing Bulletproof Wallets. Ever since Wallets, he's been on tour with me."

Trife said his experience with Ghost has been indispensable.

"I'm not ashamed to say, he's like a father figure," Trife said. "He taught me in rap. I'm very appreciative, and that's why when I go out there and do what I do, I gotta make great music. I can't let him down or my fans down."

If the great Ghostdini got his wish, he'd do a duets LP with one of his most popular collaborators: Mary J. Blige.

"We got the ill chemistry together," said Ghost, on the set of his "Baby" video in Harlem. "I love Mary. I hope one day we could ... get together and just make an ill classic. Some Peaches & Herb. [Hip-hop editor's note: Google that group!] We just hop in real quick. Just one go-round, a one-off. That's just fly."

Sitting in his tour bus, parked across the street from Rucker Park, Ghost was also thinking about collaborating with some other R&B greats. His past R&B collaborations are highlighted on the new J-Love mixtape The Wizard Is Coming.

"That was when we was in Cali at that time," Ghost thought back to his guest appearance on Mary's "Your Child" remix. "I remember Mary wanted me to do that for her real quick. I did two of them [verses]. The other verse wasn't all right. I think [the verse that made the song] might have been eight bars. Those were the days. I was stuck a little bit."

Tony Starks' eyes were as bright as Iron Man's suit with a fresh coat of candy-red paint when he talked about the "Freek'n You" remix he did with Jodeci.

"We smashed that out in two or three hours," he said of the song. "They was drinking that red shot, some red liquor. [Jodeci] was in there singing, doing their own parts. Me and [Raekwon] was in there sitting down writing our part. Then Rae went in and did his part. I laid mine after Rae. That's when our pens were going off fast and did what it did. Connected the dots. [Jodeci] were some good brothers. They was drunk, but they were doing it like it was nothing."

Ghost is putting out his Wizard of Poetry later this fall, featuring duets with John Legend, Estelle, possibly Blige and definitely Raheem DeVaughn on the first single "Baby."
