"Law Abiding Citizen" is a shifty film, with characters you thought you could root for suddenly making you question your allegiances in a morally ambiguous world.

It was shifty for the movie's real-life stars too. Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx actually switched roles before shooting began, as they both explained to MTV News a few weeks before the film's Friday release date.

Originally, Foxx was set to play Clyde Shelton, a family man whose life is shattered after his family is killed during a home invasion. Butler was lined up to play Nick Rice, a prosecutor who cuts a deal to send one killer to death row while setting his accomplice free. Shelton doesn't take kindly to this sort of legal justice and, he being a former super-agent type, decides to enact a bloody, explosion-heavy form of revenge on everyone who allowed it to happen.

"For two years, I was playing that role," explained Butler, whose production company spearheaded the film's development. "From when we got the script, I just looked at it and just always presumed I would be playing Nick Rice. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'You know, it'd be kind of cool to try Clyde, to take on that role, something I'd never done before.' "

Foxx had already agreed to play Shelton, but when Butler asked if he'd like to switch, Foxx was game. After seeing Butler as a sword-swinging badass in "300," Foxx knew he was the right man for the role. "When I look at Gerard Butler and I see '300,' just as a dude, I'm like, 'I want to see him do some dude stuff. I want to see him blow up some stuff and beat up some stuff,' " Foxx said.

"I had the movie '300' playing in my trailer the entire time we were shooting," Foxx added with a laugh.

With just hours to go before the Michael Jackson memorial service packs the Staples Center, a source close to the event told MTV News that even more big-name artists have signed on to pay tribute to the King of Pop.

Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx and Queen Latifah will all appear at Tuesday's (July 7) memorial service, joining a previously announced list of Jackson's closest friends, collaborators and mentors, including Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Motown founder Berry Gordy and John Mayer.

Other confirmed participants in the memorial service include a pair of Los Angeles Lakers' greats — Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson — Motown legend Smokey Robinson, Jackson family friend the Reverend Al Sharpton, "Britain's Got Talent" finalist Shaheen Jafargholi (who toured as a young MJ in the "Thriller Live" show), Martin Luther King III and Jackson's longtime pal, actress Brooke Shields.

At press time, who will be performing at the service was unconfirmed. Some reports have Carey reprising her version of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," photographs have emerged online of Wonder and Usher apparently rehearsing for memorial performances; Jackson family spokesperson Ken Sunshine told ABC that Latifah would perform as well. According to a statement released by the family, no further information will be released regarding the program before the service.

Though she will not appear at the Staples Center, Madonna recently paid tribute to Jackson during a show at London's O2 Arena — the same venue where Jackson's 50-show run was slated to kick off next week — with one of her dancers interpreting some of MJ's famous dance moves to a medley of "Billie Jean" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something."

In Jackson's hometown of Gary, Indiana, Mayor Rudy Clay has announced that another Gary-born singer, Deniece Williams — who sang "Let's Hear It for the Boy" from the soundtrack to the 1984 film "Footloose" — would be among the performers at a Friday memorial service at the U.S. Steel Yard baseball stadium, according to the Gary Post-Tribune. A 500-member choir will also sing "We Are the World" at the service.

MTV's live coverage of the Michael Jackson public memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles will begin on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT.

LOS ANGELES — From New Edition's scorching Jackson 5 nod opening the show to host Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo's closing number, Michael Jackson's legacy was well represented at the 2009 BET Awards. But most of the stars in attendance at the Shrine Auditorium were in awe of Janet Jackson's touching words expressing her family's grief.

"It was very, very strong; it was very courageous of her," Ciara, who also paid tribute to MJ in song during the night, told MTV News about Janet's speech. "That's what it's about, being strong for your family and being strong, period. Unfortunately, this was unexpected, and you just kind of step up to the plate. I think it was great. They seemed to have a good relationship growing up. ... I'm sure they both used to have each other's back when they needed to. It was beautiful."

Lil Mama, Wale, Teyana Taylor and Gabrielle Union were among the many that echoed Ciara's sentiments about Janet's appearance.

"I was even crying," Taylor said of Janet's brief speech. "I looked up to him. He's the reason why I dress the way I dress today."

Lil Mama, whose mother passed away in 2007, said she identified with Janet's emotions during her appearance on the show. "It was very emotional," she said. "I couldn't imagine losing my babies. My brother's here with me tonight. We already lost our mother. To lose a brother, to lose any family member, it hurts. Right then at that moment, I knew it's really happening. Mike is gone."

While the shock of Jackson's sudden death left many in dismay over the news, "From G's to Gents" host Fonzworth Bentley said Janet's appearance gave everyone a chance to let out some emotions.

"It was a bittersweet show," Bentley told MTV News from the red carpet of the SRC/BET afterparty. "I think I got a chance to get a lot of emotion out. Janet Jackson is one of my favorite artists, period, and to see her literally raise the hair on the back of everyone's neck, what courage. What that says to give of herself and not go into seclusion — [she was saying], 'I know you wanna hear from us, I know you wanna see us, so I'ma come.' And it's a very important awards show, and Michael would have shown up. He did before. It was just an amazing experience."

Alicia Keys said that sitting in the audience, she felt a wave of goodwill throughout the night from those in attendance who were shouting, yelling or doing whatever else they had to do to express their feelings about Jackson.

"There is no way this should have happened without saluting Michael Jackson," Keys said. "This is his foundation. We all grew up on him. He's loved all over the world. You can feel a very high energy here. This show is really genuine and beautiful."

On Sunday night at the end of the BET Awards, Janet Jackson spoke publicly for the first time about the death of her beloved older brother, Michael.

Clad all in white, a visibly distraught Janet remained strong as she fought back tears while addressing the audience.

"My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was too painful," she told the crowd — including her father Joe Jackson — which cheered and stood on its feet. She then said her comments would be brief.

"To you, Michael is an icon," Janet said. "To us, Michael is family. He will forever live in all of our hearts.

"On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much. Thank you so much." She teared up toward the end of her comments.

Janet's thoughts led into a profound, almost gospel performance of "I'll Be There" by show host Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo. The song — one of the Jackson 5's biggest hits — was a #1 hit single upon its original release in 1970 and again when covered by Mariah Carey for "MTV Unplugged" in 1992. On Sunday night, it was rendered quietly, with the duo accompanied only by a pianist. The performance was a strikingly different way to end an awards show, which usually conclude with big, rousing finales. It gave the show a dignified ending that perfectly suited the nature of the Jackson tribute.

During the BET aftershow telecast, when asked how he felt, Ne-Yo said: "I feel good, man. It's a sad day for music, but I've been telling people we should be celebrating his life, not mourning his death."

LOS ANGELES — It's hard to disagree with Jamie Foxx when he calls Drake the rookie of the year.

The host of Sunday's 2009 BET Awards bestowed the distinct honor upon the upstart MC when he introduced Drake, one of the last performers of the night. The pair, Foxx and Drake, had performed together just weeks ago on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.

Drake might have had to perform sitting, but he didn't disappoint. He launched into his breakout hit, "Best I Ever Had," sporting a burgundy cardigan, jeans and an all-around casual look. But the rapper was restricted to sitting on a stool for his performance as he recently suffered a knee injury, reportedly a torn ACL.

The crowd, however, rose to their feet for the Toronto-based star. 

After one quick verse, Drake then introduced his lyrical mentor Lil Wayne and the Young Money crew. The collective kicked things off with their new anthem, "Every Girl in the World." The young rappers onstage, Drizzy, Gudda Gudda, and Mack Maine, then gave way for Cash Money head Baby as he and Weezy performed their new track, "Always Strapped."

Drake is as yet unsigned, but the much-hyped rapper is expected to announce which record label he's joining very soon.

In the interim, he's worked with Mary J. Blige and he's rumored to be appearing on Jay-Z's not-yet-titled forthcoming single from The Blueprint 3.

"The Mary thing was set up as a single," he told MTV News earlier this month. "The Jay thing, I don't now how official that is. I just read that on the Internet. But it's cool. I'm glad the work I'm doing is something that people are even considering putting out as a single. 'Cause singles, you have to be confident in those songs when you're talking about singles. It's great. I'm glad that I'm delivering for people."

With Michael Jackson's death occurring just three days before Sunday's BET Awards, the show was quickly overhauled to be a tribute to the legendary entertainer. And while most awards shows conclude with a rousing finale, this one concluded quietly, with a touching speech from Michael's sister Janet and a soft, gospel-inflected performance of the Jackson 5's 1970 hit "I'll Be There" by Ne-Yo and show host Jamie Foxx.

While the evening began with New Edition romping through a stirring medley of the Jackson 5's more upbeat hits, the gentle version of "I'll Be There" made for a somber, dignified follow to Janet's brief comments.

"To you, Michael is an icon, to us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts," she said. "On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much, thank you so much," she said while tearing up.

"I'll Be There," the Jackson 5's biggest hit, was a #1 single upon its original release in 1970 and again when covered by Mariah Carey for "MTV Unplugged" in 1992. Motown founder Berry Gordy felt the ballad was a calculated risk — a notable departure from the group's uptempo earlier hits — and he co-wrote and co-produced it with Bob West, Hal Davis, and Willie Hutch. On the original, Michael shared the lead vocal with brother Jermaine; on Carey's version, Trey Lorenz sings Jermaine's lines. The song has also been covered by New Kids on the Block, Leona Lewis (on the British "X Factor" show) and on both "American Idol" and "Britain's Got Talent," among many other versions.

The song was also the Jacksons' last #1 single, although Michael was to enjoy many more during his solo career.

With Michael Jackson's death occurring just three days before the BET Awards, the show's organizers quickly overhauled it to become a tribute to the singer. And from covers of the singer's hit songs to clips from his iconic music videos to poignant tributes from leading artists, the ninth annual BET Awards became a full-blown celebration of the life and music of the King of Pop.

The nearly four-hour show kicked off with New Edition performing a medley of Jackson 5 hits like "ABC" and "The Love You Save" that garnered a standing ovation from the packed auditorium. Then host Jamie Foxx came onstage dressed in copies of Jackson's iconic red leather jacket and single sparkling glove for an abbreviated performance of the singer's classic Thriller single, "Beat It."

"No need to be sad," Foxx said afterward. "We want to celebrate this black man. He belongs to us and we shared him with everyone else."

With Michael's father, Joe Jackson, sitting in the front row, the tributes from presenters, winners and performers continued throughout the evening. Almost everyone who stepped in front of a microphone took time to praise Jackson. "This is to you, Michael Jackson," Beyoncé said after winning best female R&B artist. "I have to thank Michael for being my teacher, my hero."

As soon as she took her seat, Jay-Z took the stage for a performance of his new song, "D.O.A," and ended by pointing to the sky and saying, "Rest in peace to the King."

Earlier in the evening, Lil Wayne won the award for best male hip-hop artist and said, "We all know none of us in this room [would] be here without Michael Jackson."

Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean, who were given humanitarian awards, both expressed their gratitude to be honored on a night devoted to Jackson. "He has truly inspired me to use music in a way that serves the world," Keys said, noting that she could feel the singer's spirit in the room.

During the show, Usher released a statement expressing his regret that he could not participate in the evening's festivities. "When the BET Awards producers and organizers reached out to me to participate in the tribute, I was extremely flattered and humbled by the opportunity to pay tribute to the world's greatest musical icon," the statement read. "Unfortunately, I am currently overseas and would not make it back in time to the awards show. I look forward to seeing the show and I plan to work on a tribute to Michael Jackson when I return."

One artist who did make it to the show expressed his regrets as well. After a performance with Foxx, Ne-Yo — whose music shows a profound MJ influence — apologized for accepting an award earlier without giving a shout-out to Jackson. Declaring that the singer made it possible for him to become an artist, Ne-Yo said, "I love you and I miss you."

"My heart and prayers go out to the whole Jackson family," said 2009 NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James, following his triumph in the best male athlete category. "What they did for us and what they did for music and basketball and everything in the world is unbelievable."

"If there wasn't a Michael Jackson, then people like Justin Timberlake would probably be selling curly fries deep in the Valley," said presenter Jeremy Piven. "I mean that with love!"

"He not only showcased that singing is what it is," said Ray J. "He showcased that when you perform you gotta be the best at it. You gotta be number one with your performances as well. And we love you for that, Mike."

Artists were also sure to keep MJ central to their performances, whether with a cover (Ne-Yo's take on Jackson's "She's Out of My Life," Ciara's cover of "Heal the World" and actress Keke Palmer's a cappella version of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You") or with a wardrobe choice (Keri Hilson's Jackson-esque silver socks and shiny black shoes while singing her single "Knock You Down"). Young actor Bobb'e J. Thompson ("Role Models") took the stage with a brief yet impressive riff on Jackson's dance moves.

The show's strangest moment occurred when Taraji P. Henson, Tyrese Gibson and Ving Rhames re-created moments from their 2001 film "Baby Boy" onstage, with Tyrese screaming at Henson and Rhames, who seemed to be pretending to be drunk, taking off his belt and threatening to beat Tyrese. The crowd (and even Foxx) seemed unsure if the whole thing was staged or some disastrous live-broadcast snafu.

No single artist dominated the evening. Foxx, Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne, Hilson and Beyoncé all took home wins, as did T.I. and Rihanna, though neither was in attendance.

While the show stretched on (and dragged at times), the performances were first-rate from start to finish. An angelic-looking Beyoncé sang "Ave Maria" and a cover of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel." Other performers included Foxx and T-Pain with Travis Barker on drums ("Blame It [On the Alcohol]"), Soulja Boy Tell 'Em ("Turn My Swag On"), Keyshia Cole and Monica ("Trust"), Mary Mary ("God in Me"), Maxwell ("Pretty Wings") and Drake and Lil Wayne ("Best I Ever Had").

And in the night's most unexpected moment, Janet Jackson herself addressed the crowd on behalf of her family. "I'd just like to say that to you Michael is an icon," said the singer's sister. "To us Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts." As Foxx and Ne-Yo then teamed up for a gentle duet of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," it made for a somber but perfect conclusion to the tribute show.

Host Jamie Foxx pays tribute to Michael Jackson at the 2009 BET Awards

Everyone knew Sunday night's BET Awards would focus on the lasting memory and legacy of Michael Jackson, who died Thursday afternoon at the age of 50. The show didn't waste any time, kicking off the proceedings with a 10-minute tribute that brought the packed crowd at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium to their feet, immediately establishing the show as a sort of wake for the fallen singer.

The show opened with a clip of Jackson's appearance on the 2003 BET Awards, where he performed with James Brown. It was a melancholy but inspiring introduction to the proceedings. The audience was then treated to a stunning performance by New Edition, who performed a medley of Jackson 5 hits. The iconic R&B group, led by Bobby Brown, sang and danced their way through classics like "ABC" and "The Love You Save." The choreography was especially impressive, considering that New Edition had so little time to rehearse.

Following the Jackson 5 songs, host Jamie Foxx walked onstage dressed like vintage Jackson: The Thriller-era red leather jacket and a single sparkling sequined glove. Foxx greeted the audience and immediately launched into a performance of "Beat It." Foxx, who has plenty of experience mimicking R&B icons, ran through the classic Jackson tune with aplomb, never missing a note.

After the ovation, Foxx told the audience that the show would be festive. "No need to be sad," he told the audience. "We want to celebrate this black man. He belongs to us and we shared him with everyone else." Foxx kept it light, poking fun at Jackson's nose and the change in his skin tone over the years. "Michael was all kinds of black. He was Wesley Snipes and Chico DeBarge at the same time."

Foxx wrapped up the show's opening sequence with a decent take on Jackson's signature dance move: the Moonwalk. The Shrine erupted once again as Foxx danced his way off the stage.

When the Spike Guys' Choice Awards aired Sunday night, men celebrated the beauty that is Oscar winner Halle Berry by honoring her with the Decade of Hotness award.

But it was Berry who used the awards show as a platform to show the world her comic side when she intensely kissed presenter Jamie Foxx, parodying the 2003 Oscars moment when Adrien Brody kissed her after winning the Best Actor trophy. The kiss and the show, which taped last month, made their big debut on Sunday.

And Foxx, as you might imagine, isn't complaining about it. "Halle Berry's very attractive and has very soft lips. I just really appreciated the fact that I got a chance, you know, because it was very intense," he told MTV News. "Things happen."

Foxx described the whole thing as a "great joke," but was also fully aware of the countless men who would've killed to be in his place.

"To be honest, it was a great joke that Halle did. It was funny ... because people sort of misunderstood the pictures that came out," said Foxx, who will host the BET Awards on Sunday. "But it was a joke — respect to her and her family and everything like that. It was a funny, funny joke."

Joking aside, he admitted that he was honored to have been on the receiving end of that kiss. "She really got one over one me," he said. "She was actually mirroring what Adrien Brody did to her on the Oscars, and she did it to me on the [Guys'] awards. So thank you for that, Halle. My life will never be the same."

You can officially add Jamie Foxx's name to the growing list of Drake supporters out there.

The Oscar-winning singer/actor recently featured the highly touted up-and-comer on a remix of his new single, "Digital Girl" (which they recently unveiled during a performance on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien"), and he plans on keeping the collaboration going in the coming months — because he's officially a believer.

"Drake is the new movement, man. You gotta think about what this kid has done, man. To have records on a mixtape, and then the next thing you know he's on top of the charts. And every time you mention him, people go crazy," Foxx told MTV News. "I've had the chance to meet Drake and listen to his music. The volumes of music he's producing makes him a strong force that'll be around for a very long time. Because usually, when you see an artist of today, they do one thing — maybe they perform a song or do a great hook — but you seldom see a guy who can walk a song, all from the R&B end, and then to be on a track with Bun B ... and Bun B, he doesn't get on tracks with people unless it's really legit ... so I'm actually honored to have him on a track called 'Digital Girl,' and we will be working with each other in the future."

Foxx didn't say just when or where that work will be taking place, though he did reveal that Drake will be joining him for a few dates on his "Blame It" tour, which kicks off July 3 in Las Vegas.

"It's always great to see somebody ... those young bucks, coming up," Foxx said. "And he's making noise, so he's either gonna make people paranoid and hate him, or you gonna have to get on that boat and ride."

And count Foxx as being on the boat. Because his praise of Drake doesn't stop there — he's already comparing him to one of the all-time greats, LL Cool J.

"[Drake] has a way with women, in how he portrays himself. His music is ... he can go as gangster as he wants, but when he sings, that is the X-factor. A lot of us use the Auto-Tune, but this guy's actually melodically soothing when he's singing to females, and I think that gives him a little bit of what my man LL Cool J had," Foxx explained. "The reason LL Cool J lasted for so long was because he was an absolute monster when it came to battle rap, but he was, when it came to females ... there's not a lady in the world don't want to be at an LL Cool J show. So, if this guy can capture what I think he can capture, he'll really have that.

"Besides, I've heard some of the stuff that he's giving to me, which is on the R&B side — I said, 'What you doing with that?' he said, 'You can have it,' but when you hear what all he can do, look out," he continued. "I mean, this guy's gonna come out with a hip-hop album, then he's gonna come out with an R&B album, then he might come out with a pop mainstream album — he's that dope."
