New Releases: Twista, Michelle Williams, Katy Rose, Stereolab, Voodoo Child, Air, Fantomas & More

Look out below as Twista unleashes his Kamikaze this week. In less reckless new-releases news, Destiny's Child's Michelle Williams drops her second solo album, Do You Know, and the Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band, P.O.D., Creed and Nickelback prove they're Committed 2 Rock on this "positive music" compilation.

Stereolab's 10th full-length album, Margerine Eclipse, sticks to the group's tried-and-true sound despite the absence of singer Mary Hansen, who was killed in 2002 (see "Stereolab Singer Killed After Being Struck By Car" ). The song "Feel and Triple" is a tribute to her.

For a change of mood, check out Voodoo Child, otherwise known as Moby, and his Baby Monkey, a straightforward dance album inspired by a party Moby attended in an abandoned railway tunnel in Glasgow, Scotland.

For the generally morose Elbow, it takes a Cast of Thousands to help them lighten up a bit. Meanwhile, another downer band, Starsailor, reveal that Silence Is Easy.

Finally, Air's two-disc set, Talkie Walkie, co-produced by Nigel Godrich, features the group's usual dreamy fare plus some instrumentals, including "Alone in Kyoto," which appeared in "Lost in Translation." 10-4. Over and out.

Tool Tap Fantomas For East Coast Tour

While West Coast Tool fans will be treated to King Crimson as show openers, those on the East Coast will be primed by the sonic antics of Fantômas.

Though an itinerary is still being plotted, Fantômas, fronted by former Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, are tentatively scheduled to begin their three-week stint with Tool on September 22, according to an Ipecac Records spokesperson.

The tour, supporting the band's second album, The Director's Cut (see "Patton Scores With Second Fantômas LP"), will be routed to hit markets such as New York; Boston; Philadelphia; Portland, Maine; Washington, D.C.; Albany, New York; Charlotte, North Carolina; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Atlanta, among others.

"It's the yin and yang tour — the band of the 20-minute song meets the band of the 20-second song," Patton said of the pairing, referring to Tool's penchant for epic-length tunes and his own group's tendency to spit out brief bursts of noise.

Tool's West Coast jaunt with King Crimson begins August 3 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver (see "Tool, King Crimson Journey West For August Tour").

Before hooking up with Tool, Fantômas — vocalist Patton, bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), drummer Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer) and guitarist Buzz Osbourne (Melvins) — will hit the road with electronic trio Chicks on Speed beginning September 4, the spokesperson said.

Patton also continues to work on his Peeping Tom project, which is scheduled for release next year on Reprise Records. Lending a hand to the endeavor is eclectic hip-hop guru Dan the Automator (Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Dr. Octagon). Meanwhile, the debut album from Tomahawk — another of the prolific musician's bands, featuring former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison — is slated for October by Ipecac (see "Patton Pending: Ex-Faith No More Frontman Preps Five Projects").

The singer/composer returns Dan the Automator's favor on the producer's Nathaniel Merriweather Presents Lovage: Songs to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, also scheduled for an October release, according to a spokesperson from 75 Ark Entertainment. Lovage is the Automator, Patton and Elysian Fields vocalist Jennifer Charles, and the album will feature a cover of Berlin's "Sex (I'm A...)."

Regardless of how many copies the album goes on to sell, it's safe to say Mike Patton has scored with the second LP by Fantômas, The Director's Cut.

For the 16-track LP, scheduled for a July 24 release by Patton's label, Ipecac, the former Faith No More frontman and his bandmates have interpreted selections from the scores for films such as "The Godfather," "Cape Fear" and "Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me" — all with the avant-garde weirdness fans have come to expect from Patton, bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), drummer Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer) and guitarist Buzz Osbourne (Melvins).
For a preview of the album, an MP3 of Fantômas' take on Christopher Komeda's lullabye theme from "Rosemary's Baby" is available for download at <a href="http://www.ipecac.com/archives.php"target="_blank">www.ipecac.com.
A cover of Irene Cara's "Flashdance ... What a Feeling," from the movie "Flashdance," was originally slated for inclusion and was dropped when the LP became focused on horror and science-fiction soundtracks, according to the band's publicist.

In addition to The Director's Cut, which follows Fantômas' eponymous 1999 debut, the prolific Patton is involved in the third Fantômas album, expected in November; Tomahawk, another all-star endeavor centered on former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison; Peeping Tom, a relatively accessible undertaking (by Patton's recent standards); and a collaboration with New York turntablists the X-ecutioners, hopeful for 2002 (see ).

The track listing for The Director's Cut, including original composers, according to Fantômas' publicist:

"The Godfather" (Nino Rota)

"The Golem" (Karl-Ernst Sasse)

"Experiment in Terror" (Henry Mancini)

"One Step Beyond" (Harry Lubin)

"Night of the Hunter (Remix)" (Walter Schumann)

"Cape Fear" (Bernard Herrmann)

"Rosemary's Baby" (Christopher Komeda)

"The Devil Rides Out (Remix)" (James Bernard)

"Spider Baby" (Ronald Stein)

"The Omen - Ave Satani" (Jerry Goldsmith)

"Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer" (Robert McNaughton)

"Vendetta" (John Barry)

(untitled)

"Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" (Ennio Morricone)

"Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me" (Angelo Badalamenti)

With Faith No More now a memory, singer and musical explorer Mike Patton has poured his diabolical energy into Mr. Bungle, and the results will soon surface with a new album and tour.
The project that Patton helped to get rolling some 15 years ago will release "California" on July 13, the same day that the band kicks off a U.S. tour in San Francisco.
"California" will mark the band's third album since 1991 and its first since 1995's "Disco Volante." For the effort, Mr. Bungle sports the familiar lineup of Patton, Trevor Dunn (bass and keyboards), Danny Heifetz (percussion and keyboards), Trey Spruance (guitars and keyboards), and Bar (horns and keyboards). This time out, the band has subdued its more atonal tendencies a bit in favor of a string of more conventional (yet still eerie and challenging) songs.
If you want to see where the ever-evolving Mr. Bungle stands now, here's where to catch them:

7/13 - San Francisco, CA @ Slim's
7/14 - San Francisco, CA

Fantomas, the metal-noise supergroup featuring Faith No More's Mike Patton, rolled into San Francisco Thursday night to introduce new material from its upcoming album at a less-than-half-full Slim's.

It was the same venue where the group made their sold-out debut this past May. The line-up again featured drummer Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins on guitar, and bass player Trevor Dunn, who also plays with Patton in the band Mr. Bungle.

The music came from the band's forthcoming album, which they just finished recording in San Francisco. Broken up into about 30 short bursts of sound, the songs are untitled. Patton doesn't even call them songs, instead using the term "pages" in reference to the comic book "Fantomas," which inspired the music and the band. The band performs them in exactly the same order as they appear on the as-yet-untitled album.

Mr. Bungle, meanwhile, is writing material for their next album, to be recorded later this year.

Fantomas is in the midst of a West Coast tour, which kicked off last week with three sold-out shows in Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. Fantomas heads next to the Troubadour in Los Angeles.

Metallica's Jason Newsted, former Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, and possibly Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead and ex-Dead Kennedy singer Jello Biafra will be joining Sepultura onstage for a benefit concert on August 15 in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the Anhembi fairgrounds.
The show marks the act's first public concert in the their home-country of Brazil with new singer Derrick Greene, who replaced Sepultura's founding member and vocalist Max Cavalera after he not-so-quietly left the group in January of 1997.
The benefit will help provide relief to areas of the country where the crops have been destroyed due to severe weather conditions. It has been appropriately dubbed, "Noise AGAINST Hunger." A donation of at least 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of food will be collected at the gate along with a small ticket price.
Also expected to be performing at the event are the Xavantes, the Indian tribe that appears on one of the group's earlier albums called, "Roots." As for the heavy metal
outfit's current work, their upcoming album titled "Against" is due out on October 6 on Roadrunner Records.
As previously reported by MTV News (see "Metallica's Newsted And Sepultura Find 'Hatred Inside'"), Newsted is featured playing both guitar and theremin on the track "Hatred Inside." The song was recorded in the bassist's home studio in San Francisco, back in May.

Imperial Teen Delayed, New One For Faith No More

Imperial Teen's new album release has been pushed back until early next year, according to the band's publicist.

A spokesperson for the Roddy Bottum-led band told MTV News that there wasn't a problem with the record, but the company decided that the fourth quarter of the retail sales year was not a good time to be trying to push an album by a developing band. She cited tight airplay schedules, lack of retail promotion space and other like problems.
"We want to increase the odds as much as possible," said the spokesperson. She added that the band would be receiving tour support this October for a U.S. roadtrip to prepare for a full-scale push for the record's release come January.
Bottum is best known as the keyboardist for the defunct Faith No More. He formed Imperial Teen with Will Schwartz, Lynn Perko and Jone Stebbins and debuted with the profound pop album "Seasick" in 1996.
In Faith No More news, watch for a 14-track 'best of' compilation from Faith No More called
"Who Cares a Lot?" scheduled for release in October. (The band had a 1985 hit called "We Care A Lot"). The Internet's Hard Radio reports that the record will include the European-only b-sides 'Absolute Zero', and a cover of the Bee Gees' "I Started A Joke," as well as an unreleased track called "Patton I."

It was not your usual show.
Mike Patton, former lead singer of Faith No More, debuted his new group, Fantomas, last night in his home town of San Francisco. An avante-garde metal super-group of sorts, the band played a little over an hour of music that did not resemble the sound of any of the band member's previous groups, including Faith No More, Slayer, the Melvins, and Patton's other project, Mr. Bungle.

The sold-out show at Slim's consisted of about 30 short songs with non-traditional structures and rhythm patterns. Patton stood on the side of the stage, giving visual cues to the rest of the group in the style of a classical conductor. He performed less as the frontman of a group and more as simply one of the instruments, alternatively shrieking, roaring, yelping, and belting out very few sounds that resembled his more familiar vocal style.
Guitarist Buzz Osborne of the Melvins, ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, bassist Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle, and Patton took
turns at the center of the super-loud sound, delivering unpredictable and sporadic bursts of percussion and bass, experimental, noisy guitar licks, and irregular vocals.

Those in the audience who hadn't come prepared with earplugs grappled with the auditory onslaught in different ways. Some plugged their ears. Others left in the middle of the show. A few banged their heads.

Throughout the evening, the crowd reaction ranged from intense enthusiasm at some moments, confusion or shock at others. There were a few requests to play something more familiar, and at one point an audience member yelled out to let the band know he was disappointed. Patton responded only with an undetermined gesture, saying nothing to the rest of the crowd until the last song.

"Thank you all so much for coming out to hear our first show. I hope you're having a good time, even that guy," Patton said graciously, referring to the one unhappy fan. "This is our last song, and I'm sure it's
going to be a really big hit," he added jokingly as the band launched into another of their cacophonic creations.

Fantomas will play another show in San Francisco this Sunday before taking their show to New York City early in July.

Faith No Fantomas: Patton To Unveil New Group

Former Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton will be introducing his new band, Fantomas, in San Francisco this Thursday.

The Fantomas are Patton, his longtime Mr. Bungle bandmate Trevor Dunn on bass; the Melvins' Buzz Osborne on guitar and ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo.

Patton told the San Francisco Chronicle that he's only barely met some of his new mates and that it will be sink or swim -- the band will have just five days of rehearsals. It will either be fresh and good, says Patton, or it will blow up in their faces. The band is named after a chaotic character from a turn-of-the-century French crime novel series.

Like Mr. Bungle, a long-lived Patton sideproject in place before he joined Faith No More, Fantomas will not have traditional lyrics. But while the band's sound, Patton tells the Chronicle, won't be the Mr. Bungle-like avante garde cacophony and off the wall costuming, it will include "comic-book sounds and baby talk.''

The group won't be
a full-time project for the members, given their individual schedules, but Patton says that he hopes to record with Fantomas in the fall. Their label status is still up in the air, however. Faith No More broke up without fulfilling their obligations to Warner Bros., which may or may not affect the new group. Patton declined to comment on the issue in the interview.

Following their debut in San Francisco, the band heads to New York City for showcase dates July 1 and 2 at the Knitting Factory.
