Fall Out Boy, T.I. Team Up For Personal Song With 'Nightmare Before Christmas' Sound

On the surface (or pretty much any other level), T.I. and Fall Out Boy don't have much in common. But that hasn't stopped them from joining forces on a new track, which is in line to appear on the rapper's upcoming Paper Trail album.

MTV News listened to a rough demo of the song, tentatively called "Out in the Cold" last week in Los Angeles, and judging from what we heard, fans of both camps are going to be rather surprised by the results.

Starting off with chiming electronic stabs — which Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz likened to "something from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' " — the song is somber and emotional, loaded with dramatic, crashing guitars, soaring strings and the King of the South's deeply personal lyrics, which detail the trials and tribulations he's endured over the past year.

"Biggie and 'Pac's murders still unsolved/ And you wonder why I got 'em in the car and the trunk," T.I. raps at one point, addressing his arrest on weapons charges late last year. Later in the song, he makes mention of threats against his home and of "tying up [his] family" and adds that, while he's hired security for protection, "What happens when it freezes up again, like it did in Cincinnati?" — a reference to the 2006 shooting death of his friend Philant Johnson in that city.

And while he's defiant throughout, there are also moments where Tip lets his guard down. At another point in the song, he apologizes for his arrest and admits he's done wrong, specifically saying that he "Call[ed] on God" and prayed deeply for forgiveness during his weapons trial.

But the autobiographical stuff doesn't end there. Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump sings the hook on the track, and he plumbs the same depths, bellowing, "I drink to forget/ I write so I never will/ Curse myself/ Down and out for all time/ I'm always leaving you high and dry/ I'm always leaving you out in the cold."

It's all pretty powerful stuff, made even more so by the track itself, which, though it's infused with skittering drum patterns and synthesizers, was actually one that FOB had intended to use on their upcoming album, according to Wentz (though this seems to fly in the face of his earlier, "riff-heavy" description of the record).

"That actually was a part we had written in between Infinity on High and when we went to Chile on tour," Wentz told MTV News. "After hearing about the chance to do a collaboration with someone like T.I., we thought, 'How amazing would it be to send him something with strings and a Danny Elfman-like intro that Patrick came up with?' Lyrically you can take it as [being about] a friend, a lover or even a fan."

A spokesperson for T.I.'s label, Atlantic, confirmed to MTV News that "Out in the Cold" is "in consideration" for Tip's Paper Trail, which hits stores in September. If the song makes the cut, it wouldn't be FOB's first foray into the world of hip-hop. Jay-Z collaborated with them on the opening track to 2006's Infinity on High album, and Stump sang the hook on the Roots' "Birthday Girl," though that song ended up being cut from the group's Rising Down album.

Hey, bloggers! Pay attention, because Pete Wentz is about to make things very easy for you.

Here's what he has to say about Fall Out Boy's new album — you know, the one that may or may not have an Iggy Pop & the Stooges-meet-the Smiths feel to it? The same one they're currently working on with producer Neal Avron? Anyway, yeah, here's how Wentz describes it. And again, we urge you to have your OMGs and WTFs at the ready.

"It's early, but the ideas we've got right now, they're really guitar-riff-heavy. A lot of other bands, like AC/DC or the White Stripes, you know their songs by the opening guitar riff," Wentz told MTV News. "So basically, I want our record to be like an AC/DC album or a White Stripes album. I want to make sure the bloggers say that. Actually, I'm just kidding about that. Well, I was kidding about the White Stripes part. Not AC/DC."

So there you go. The new Fall Out Boy record is going to be heavily influenced by the fret-shredding heroics of Jack White and Angus Young. Except that it probably won't, because, as Wentz points out, pretty much every song the band has ever written has gone through about, well, 30 different permutations. And, like he said, it's still really early.

"We've put down, like, three to four songs, but they're just ideas right now. This is how we do our songs. They go through, like, 30 changes. 'Sugar [We're Going Down]' went through 30 changes, and then it just went back to the way it was when we first started, so I don't know if these ideas we've got now will change or end up just like they are now," he explained. "Right now, we've got a bunch of great parts surrounded by a web."

And they're weaving that web at Avron's home, which has perks the average recording studio wouldn't ("He's got a trampoline built into the ground, a pool and a really awesome kid. So it's really easy to do test marketing, because if his kid says it sucks, we know it sucks," Wentz laughed). And as for how the pre-production process works? Well, Wentz is quick to explain with a "Wizard of Oz" metaphor (why not?).

"The way it works is, Patrick is kind of like Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz,' and we're all the supporting characters. I'm like the Tin Man, Hurley is Toto, and Trohman is definitely the Lion, because he's got big hair and he's very boisterous," he laughed. "I go over there after I leave the set of 'FNMTV,' and usually before too. Usually twice a day. Patrick is always there, working on new stuff. We keep him chained in the basement."

So when can fans expect to hear the new album? Well, Wentz said FOB hope to start recording it this summer, and that it will hopefully be in stores before the end of the year. Then again, that wouldn't be the first time he's said something like that.

"I think we're gonna start recording this summer, because it's 116 degrees in Los Angeles, and I need to be someplace with extreme air-conditioning," he said. "But I always say that, and then we screw it up, so we'll see."

On The Record: FNMTV, FNLA and FNBASTARDSOFYOUNG

I am not, as they say, an "L.A. person." In fact, I am probably the most un-L.A. person I know. I deplore traffic, VIP areas cordoned off with cushy velveteen ropes, California Pizza Kitchen, that dude the Cobra Snake and bands like Mickey Avalon — and as far as I can tell, those are pretty much the only things that exist in Los Angeles. I thought I was the anti-Randy Newman until someone told me his 1983 song "I Love L.A." is at least partially ironic. Anyway, I strongly dislike L.A.

So why, exactly, am I here? Surely there must be some colossally important reason I've flown west, subjected myself once again to all that is terrible about this place and am now sitting in a big, fancy hotel on Hollywood Boulevard, far away from my wife and our apartment, with my window open, listening to the sons and daughters of old money squeal and cavort in the well-manicured courtyard below me as I hammer out this week's column on a bed with high-thread-count sheets.

Well, actually, yes, there is. I'm trying to save the music video.

Or, more specifically, Pete Wentz is trying to save the music video. Tim Kash and I are here to help.

See, about a month ago, Wentz called me and asked if I'd be interested in helping him out with a project he was working on: a show based on the very simple idea that, once upon a time, music videos meant something. They were big deals, things you'd stay up late to watch, with a VHS tape cued and ready to record. They were like mini movies, grand unveilings of new songs and new looks and even new bass players. Some of them were great, some were terrible and some were even art, but they all meant something to someone somewhere.

Sadly, all of that seems like ancient history — the silly logic of some bygone era. But wouldn't it be great if it weren't? Wouldn't it be amazing if videos mattered again, were celebrated and given the proper treatment they deserve? Wouldn't it be wonderful if they were shown in their entirety? The answer, I thought after rolling it around in my jaded brain for a minute, was unequivocally yes.

And that's basically how I ended up on "FNMTV," a new video show hosted by Wentz that premieres Friday night (June 13) at 8 p.m. ET/PT. (There was also some auditioning involved, but I'll spare you the grisly details.) We're currently rehearsing for the first episode — which will feature a live performance by Panic at the Disco and world premieres of videos from Flo Rida, the Ting Tings, Snoop Dogg and the Pussycat Dolls — in a heavily stucco'ed studio in Hollywood; I'm told it's the same lot where they film that show "Weeds." So far, I have sat through processes with names like "dry blocking" and "read-thrus" and have learned exactly two things: that I am incredibly terrible at TV (seriously, you should tune in just to see if my head will explode, because there's a 50-50 chance it will), and that despite my best efforts, this show could actually be really good.

And I'm not just saying that because MTV is putting me up in a big, fancy hotel with nice sheets, either. If you are a fan of music videos — or even a fan of music — you are probably going to like what we're doing here. And if, like me, you can remember the halcyon days of the early-to-mid 1990s, you're going to be happy too, because we're actually going to be playing the kind of videos that ran ad infinitum back then. Seriously!

And for fans of live performances, surprise guests and all sorts of user-generated content and interactive widgetry, that'll all be in there too — it is MTV, after all.

It's a delightfully antiquated idea — to premiere brand-new videos, often in their entirety, and then talk about them — but it's also a really vital one. Because, for better or worse, an entire generation of music fans has grown up bereft of the knowledge that music videos can really be amazing. It is a safe bet that today's 13-year-old does not have a VHS tape loaded with gems like Beck's "Where It's At," Pavement's "Range Life" or Yo La Tengo's "Sugarcube" (plus a whole lot of awkward Matt Pinfield interviews), and that's not just because VHS tapes are obsolete. It's because a lot of today's music videos aren't worth recording — or remembering, for that matter.

Through programming decisions and YouTube pixelations, the average video now has approximately the same worth (and life span) as a McDonald's hamburger or an issue of the PennySaver: They're disposable, meant for quick and soulless consumption. And if videos are basically just belched into the ether like so much burnt trash, well, why should directors even bother trying to make something of value? It's all going into the same cosmic junkheap anyhow.

I hope "FNMTV" helps to change all that. It may be naive, but hey, it's a start. And along the way, perhaps it could also help breathe life back into the genre (or something like that). If we treat music videos like events, then perhaps music videos will start actually becoming events once again. Or at the very least, maybe some kid will tune in, see a video like the Replacements' legendary "Bastards of Young," and go, "Wow, what is that?"

Regardless, you can't say we didn't try. Actually, a lot of people already are saying things like that: Maybe we're not premiering enough videos, or maybe people will never be satisfied no matter what. Still, you should tune in anyway, because at the very least, you'll get to see my goofy ass clam up on live TV (this will be particularly satisfying to the thousands of David Cook fans I've offended over the past few weeks). After all, I'd hate to think I came all the way out to Los Angeles for nothing.

"FNMTV" premieres Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

In recent months, there's been an epidemic of celebrities playing coy with the media about big, personal news. Whether it was Jay and Beyoncé, Mariah and Nick, or just about anything regarding Pete and Ashlee, the no-straight-answers, keep-'em-guessing approach has been the rule more than the exception. And fair enough: Celebrities aren't obligated to share personal news with the media.

But last month, Pete Wentz denied to MTV News that his now-wife Ashlee Simpson was pregnant. However, rumors continued to swirl, the couple immediately backed off from directly answering the question, and late Wednesday, the newlyweds finally announced on FriendsOrEnemies.com (as they did with their engagement) that she actually is pregnant.

Couples often wait until the end of a pregnancy's first trimester to share their news. But still, somebody had some 'splainin' to do. Here's what Pete told us via e-mail on Thursday (May 29).

"Every woman, no matter who they are or what they do for a living, has the right to wait at least 3 months before sharing this very personal news," he wrote. "We wanted to wait until after the first trimester and get a clean bill of health from our doctors before confirming anything, just like any other couple.

"Being a boy I have no idea how to respond to such things and my first instinct was to protect her and the baby.

"It's insane that you can't let happy news brew in Hollywood. This wasn't about press or anything. It was about the health of the baby and trying to find a way to be happy with what should be the most happy time of our lives in the middle of a press blitz. I apologize to anyone who felt misinformed but the truth is, the person and growing baby is who I felt most loyal to protect and defend."

After more than a month of denials, Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz have finally confirmed what many have long suspected: She is pregnant with the couple's first child.

As they did with their engagement, the couple announced the news on FriendsOrEnemies.com: "While many have speculated about this," the couple wrote, "we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to officially confirm that we are expecting our first child. This is truly the most joyous time in our lives, and we are excited to share the happy news and start our family."

Speculation that Simpson, 23, was pregnant began swirling more than a month before the couple's May 17 wedding at her parents' home in the Los Angeles area. Wentz denied the reports in April — saying "There is a witch hunt for people to be pregnant whenever they get engaged in Hollywood. ... I mean, really, this is crazy" — but later in the month Simpson evaded the pregnancy question while talking to MTV News, saying she thought it was "an inappropriate question to ask any woman."

In the following weeks, the pair continued to avoid directly answering the question. Last week, when "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest asked Wentz, 28, on his KIIS-FM radio show about the possibility that he would soon be a dad, the bassist said, "Ryan, this baby has not been confirmed!"

A report on People magazine's Web site suggests that this could be the first of several Simpson-Wentz offspring. According to the mag, after the couple's wedding, Simpson-Wentz said, "I would love to have a big family one day," with her new hubby chiming in, "A big soccer team or a band!"

Ashlee Simpson will change her name to Ashlee Wentz, a spokesperson confirmed to MTV News.

The singer, who married Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz on May 17at her parents' home in Encino, California, is quoted in a story on People.com saying that she'll now be known privately as Ashlee Wentz, and professionally as Ashlee Simpson-Wentz. She's making the change because "I think that that's something that a woman should do when they're marrying a man," she told People. "It's a tradition that I think is great."

According to the article, Wentz said that while he left the name-changing decision to his wife, he's more than flattered she chose to take his name.

"The Wentz family, our Christmas card just got upgraded!" he told the magazine. "It feels insane. It feels unreal."

So does this mean the pop star's next album will be credited to "Ashlee Simpson-Wentz"? A spokesperson for the couple did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter, but we did manage to get a response from Wentz himself, who sort of confirmed the name change in an e-mail.

"Yeah, I think it's true," he wrote. "I wasn't there when Ash was talking, but on my side it is [true.]"

Whether she becomes Simpson-Wentz or not, Ash's name change is just the latest in an ever-growing list of tabloid-topping instances involving the couple. They first announced their engagementvia a blog post on FriendsOrEnemies.com back in April, and when rumors that Simpson was pregnant began to spread, Wentz e-mailed MTV News to deny them. Then, just two weeks ago, reports began to swirlthat the couple were planning a quickie marriage in order to evade paparazzi. Those reports, of course, turned out to be true.

On The Record: The Best (Worst) Man

You may not know this, but I tend to write a lot of stories about Fall Out Boy. And by a lot, I mean volumes. Like, somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 over the past four years, at the very least. And not surprisingly, most of these stories have tended to be about — or at least revolve around — Pete Wentz.

When he took Sidekick pics of his junk, I wrote about it. A lot. When he battled a bouncer in New Mexico, I filed at least three stories about the incident (one of which featured the headline ). The same goes for the time he pounded a partygoer in Chicago (plus bonus coverage of the subsequent lawsuit).

When he opened bars in New York, DJed at clubs in Las Vegas and threw fundraisers for Barack Obama in Chi-Town, I covered them with the tenacity of a cub reporter. And when he's decided to boycott the Grammys or make an ill-fated trip to Antarctica, well, let's just say I've been more than willing to capture the subtle nuances of each. Over and over again.

And this is not necessarily a bad thing. Quite the opposite, in fact. In many ways — OK, in pretty much all of them — Pete Wentz has made my job here really easy. He is like a constant font of headlines, and covering him is a full-time gig — one that's kept me fat, happy and off the dreaded 311/Hoobastank beat. And for that, I pretty much owe him the most gigantic debt of gratitude imaginable.

Of course, as an added bonus, I've also gotten to know Pete pretty well. I've met his folks and been to his childhood home. We e-mail regularly about inane bull. We've eaten dinners together. He is a good dude, and I have no problem saying that he's my friend, except that 1) we don't spend three hours a day discussing fantasy baseball; 2) by saying that, I'm basically breaking every guideline in the "Ethical Journalist" handbook (not to mention totally violating the Lester Bangs principle in "Almost Famous"); and 3) he didn't invite me to his wedding.

Let me explain. See, the past month has been rather strange for me. When news of Wentz's engagement to Ashlee Simpson first broke, I was rather conflicted. On one hand, the reporter in me was happy that MTV News got the story, and got it right. On the other, I had spoken to Wentz earlier that day for a completely different story, and he failed to mention his plan to pop the question. This sort of bothered me, because, hey, we're friends, right? (Aren't we?) And friends tend to tell each other these sort of things.

And it didn't stop there. Over the next few weeks, I was inundated with joking e-mails from my coworkers asking if I was going to be invited to the wedding. Of course, I laughed them off at first, because, seriously, why would I be? I'm a reporter, remember? You know, the enemy. Only deep down inside, I had a strange feeling, one that only grew as the e-mails persisted. Eventually, it became fairly obvious that most people believed there was a genuine possibility I might really get invited. And I started to agree with them; after all, they all weren't crazy. Pete and I were pals!

Quickly, I began running through potential gift ideas in my head (matching hoodies?). I wondered aloud if I should get my suit dry-cleaned. And I checked my mailbox each night, hoping in some childlike way that there'd be a frilly little envelope stuffed inside: "Joe and Whatever-Ashlee's-Mom's-Name-Is Simpson cordially invite you, etc, etc, etc ... Please RSVP before etc, etc, etc." It was all very weird. I'm sure lines were being crossed. And I'm not sure what that says about me as a reporter.

Because as someone much wiser than me (Chuck Klosterman) once said, a good journalist will never believe that he's "friends" with anyone he interviews, because 1) it means you've lost your edge, since the best reporters are the most adversarial; and 2) the relationship between the two sides never exists in reality. A journalist and a subject are brought together only under pre-arranged conditions (i.e. a publicist sets up an interview/shoot at a given time and location — usually a suite in a hotel or something) and never spend time together of their own accord. Therefore, any relationship is pure fantasy. And he's right. I think.

In the end, it didn't really matter, because it turned out that I didn't get the Golden Invite. Pete and Ashlee married this past weekend in Los Angeles, and I wasn't there. Honestly, I'm completely fine with that — if not a little bummed. I've read all the reports, and it sounds like a completely lovely, totally amazing affair. (Shoot, how could any wedding that features an "Alice in Wonderland" theme and the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys not be?)

But I'm also sort of relieved I wasn't on the list, because I keep wondering what would've happened if I were to have gone? Would I have been loyal to my friend, and not reported on everything I saw? Or would I have listened to the journalist inside of me and, you know, live-blogged the ceremony or something? (Scoops Montgomery strikes again!) Oh, the quandary!

So, Pete, in the end, I think you did me a favor by not inviting me to the wedding. You reminded me what it means to be a journalist — and a friend (you're such a smart dude!). I still have my job, and I can still count you as my friend (don't tell anyone, though). All is forgiven because we're pals. Or not. I'm a professional, after all.

The first public images to surface from Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz's marriage to Ashlee Simpson hit the Web Wednesday morning, over at People magazine's online home.

The image, which shows the couple — her in an ivory lace Monique Lhuillier dress, a diamond necklace with matching earrings and a cathedral-length veil; him in a black Dior Homme tuxedo with white bowtie — and their ringbearer, Wentz's English bulldog Hemingway, will grace the cover of People's forthcoming issue, which hits newsstands on Friday.

The rockers' wedding Saturday night was a non-denominational event, with an "Alice in Wonderland" theme; the bride's father, Joe Simpson, officiated, and Ashlee's sister, Jessica, served as her bridesmaid. The affair unfolded in the backyard of Joe and Tina Simpson's Encino, California, home, and was attended by approximately 150 guests, including Nicole Richie and Joel Madden and Jessica's on-again, off-again beau, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

In a radio interview Tuesday morning for KIIS-FM's "On Air With Ryan Seacrest," Wentz revealed that the couple decided to forego a traditional honeymoon for a more intimate, less expensive post-nuptials retreat — in the basement of the couple's Los Angeles home. And while reports suggest the wedding was rushed because Simpson is pregnant, Wentz declined to confirm those reports.

"Ryan, this baby has not been confirmed," he insisted. "The only thing I'm confirming now is that we're in the basement on our honeymoon with these blow-up palm trees."
