Jay-Z Joins T.I., Fat Joe, Fabolous As A Hip-Hop Dad

'It's serious being a hip-hop rapper and being a father in the real world,' Fat Joe tells MTV News.

Jay-Z isn't the first rapper to become a dad, not by a long shot. But now that he and wife Beyoncé welcomed Blue Ivy Carter into the world on January 8, there has been much speculation over what kind of parents they will be.

So how will Jay balance his street-bred rap persona with his new fatherly responsibilities? It's a balancing act that MCs like T.I., Fat Joe and Fabolous have been juggling for some time now.

Before rap, Fat Joe had quite the reputation on the streets of the Bronx, and over the course of his 19-year career, his music has reflected just that. His teenage son, Ryan, sometimes feels the pressure to live up to his dad's rep, but Joey Crack works hard to guide him right. " 'Everywhere he goes people tell him, 'I remember when your father was this, this and that,' so he's tryin' to live up to that," Joe told MTV News. "But I'm tryin' to tell him, 'Yo, we live in a mansion, B, like you know that's done.' "

Ja Rule, who is currently serving a two-year sentence on a gun charge, talked to MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway about how his life decisions ultimately affect his kids when he appeared on "RapFix Live" in April. "She needs her father," Rule said of his teenage girl, Brittany. "My boys, they need me right now too, as well as my wife. They need Daddy, and Daddy f---ed up."

Nick Cannon was recently hospitalized for kidney failure and spoke to MTV News about maintaining a healthier lifestyle to be there for his and wife Mariah Carey's children."There was a second I was thinking like, 'Damn, what if I'm not able to instill the things that I want to instill into my children?' " he said of his time in the hospital earlier this month. "It just makes you think, 'Yo, I need to give them everything I can possibly give them right now,' and obviously it starts with love."

Being a hip-hop father definitely changes things. Before he became a dad, Fabolous rarely rhymed about his personal life, but in 2009 he opened up about his son Johan on "Stay," a track from his Loso's Way album. On his upcoming Loso's Way 2, Fab figures he will open up even more. "[Children] change the way you look at things and do things and I think the music will reflect that too," he said.

T.I. has been balancing rap and family life for almost his entire career. He and wife Tameka "Tiny" Harris now star in the VH1 reality series "T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle," where cameras follow the couple and their six children around. On the show, Tip's kids exhibit a star quality similar to their famous dad; his son Domani is even starting a rap career of his own. "I'm not going to encourage him," T.I. said about his son following in his footsteps. "However, I will support him if I see that he's sincerely passionate."

There's a lot to consider when being a hip-hop dad, so Hov has his work cut out for him. "It's serious being a hip-hop rapper and being a father in the real world," Fat Joe said.

Tyga's 'Rack City' Is 'Beneficial' To Strippers, Wale Says

Radio, music videos, mixtapes and digital presence are all fine gauges of what's hot in hip-hop, but the set lists at gentlemen's clubs should never be overlooked.

At the moment, Tyga's "Rack City" seems to be the current strip-club crown holder, and now with the remix video featuring Wale and Fabolous coming, the record doesn't appear to be losing steam any time soon.

"I'm just happy that I can be a part of a record that's influencing and making so many young, ambitious dancers so much money," Wale playfully told MTV News from the set of Tyga's remix video in Miami.

This past Friday, Tyga gathered Wale and Fab to shoot their portion of the "Rack City" video. On set, the trio joked about how the track keeps strip clubs open for business.

"I think it's important that we continue to make songs like this, because it's keeping the whole game of ... ," Wale started before completely losing his train of thought.

"The cycle of the economy," Loso chimed in.

"It's very beneficial to so many young women across the country," Wale picked back up. "The strip clubs are stress relief. Welcome to Rack City!"

Tyga just nodded in agreement. "Everything they said," he added with a laugh.

The DJ Mustard-produced track is slated to appear on Tyga's upcoming Young Money debut Careless World. The song's original was adapted from the "Grand Theft Auto" series of video games. In the clip, which weaves a campy crime tale with performance shots, Tyga plays an out-of-luck bandit who steals from the fictional Rack City's underworld boss, Mr. Rose.

Fabolous Champions Meek Mill's 'Young Energy'

Fabolous has collaborated with a ton of MCs in his 10-plus years in the rap game. From Jay-Z and Lil Wayne to Rick Ross and Kanye West, Loso has spit with the best of them, but a feature with newcomer Meek Mill has the veteran Brooklyn lyricist especially excited.

Fab, who will be a guest on Wednesday's (January 4) "RapFix Live," invited Meek Mill to jump on "You Don't Know 'Bout It," a track off of his recently released There Is No Competition III mixtape.

"I think Meek is, like, young energy, what hip-hop needs," Fabolous told MTV News last month. "I always like to see new, young energy come into the game."

Meek hails from Philadelphia and has made his name as an artist on Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group, but it isn't just Mill's skills on the mic that Fab admires. Loso also appreciates the "I'mma Boss" rapper's ability to overcome the hardships he faced on the street. "It shows a person from the same walk of life you come from reaching something that they wanted to do against the odds of what could've happened," Fabolous said of Meek's past.

"I know a little bit of his story where he went to jail and stuff like that, so it's good to see him actually doing something that he's pursuing and being successful at that. I like that as well, just even being able to collaborate with that."

It's 2012 and "RapFix Live" returns to kick off the new year with Brooklyn's own Fabolous on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. "RapFix Live" closed out 2011 by crowning Machine Gun Kelly our Hottest Breakthrough MC of the year as voted by fans. Fab also ended the year in grand fashion when he released his murderous mixtape There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3s on Christmas Day.

It was his mixtape grind with DJ Clue that made Fabolous a rap force to be reckoned with in the late 1990s, but Loso has continually grown throughout his career and is one of hip-hop's most successful and celebrated MCs. Not only does Loso remain one of the game's rawest rappers, he is also one of its biggest hitmakers thanks to singles like 2003's "Can't Let You Go," 2007's "Make Me Better" and "Throw It in the Bag" from his last album, Loso's Way.

With TINC III once again cementing his position in the streets, Fab is back in the studio working on his next solo LP, Loso's Way 2. "Loso's Way 2 is a work-in-process. I put a lot in my mixtapes, but I definitely put a lot into my albums as well," Fab told MTV News in December, referencing the DJ Drama-helmed TINC III and the upcoming album. "I know a lot of people like mixtape Fab, and albums, to me, you're speaking to a broader audience sometimes. I take that at hand. I guess everybody doesn't see that."

Loso has also seen his private life come under the microscope now that his son's mother, Emily Bustamante, is a star on VH1's juicy reality show "Love & Hip Hop." Fab, however, isn't a fan. "It's just not my cup of tea," Fabolous told New York radio host Angie Martinez on her Hot 97 show earlier this month. "It's one side of what's going on. I don't bash it, but I'm not really in support of it, either. I don't think it depicts me the way I am. It just depicts a one-sided version of what's going on."

Fab won't be the only guest this week on "RapFix Live." Every year since 2002, Virginia MC Skillz drops a lyrical year in review — it has become an annual hip-hop tradition. On Wednesday, the "Are You That Somebody" lyricist will perform his "2011 Rap-Up."

Brooklyn MC Maino has also started a yearly tradition of his own. Three years ago, the "Hi Hater" rapper released "2009 Predictions." Last year he looked into his crystal ball and dropped "2011 Predictions," in which he successfully guessed that Lindsay Lohan would have relapsing bouts with alcohol, the Throne would sell over a million records, and Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would go another year without fighting in what would be the most anticipated boxing match in years.

Real Spit: Funeral Fab takes no days off — not even Christmas. On Sunday while many were celebrating the holidays with family, Fabolous decided to gift-wrap his latest mixtape and release it online as a free download. There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3's is the third installment of the popular series that Fab and DJ Drama started in 2008.

"The theme of There Is No Competition III, it has the subtitle Death Comes in 3's, which plays along in the trilogy of this tape," Fab told Mixtape Daily.

The death-themed tape doesn't disappoint. On "Black City," Fabolous dons appropriate mourning attire and rides Tyga's "Rack City" beat to take shots at his rap competitors. The killing spree continues on the Lloyd Banks-assisted "Get Down or Lay Down" when F-A-B-O spits, "Money over bitches, dirt on top of bitch, n---as/ Put you in ya place, it happens to be a ditch, n---a." The Street Fam general calls upon more rap comrades on "B.E.T," which features Styles P and Jadakiss, and then again on "Unf---witable" with Red Café.

Things begin to get personal on "Death in the Family." Over an eerie-sounding track, Loso partners up with his brother Paul Cain and together they bid farewell to an unnamed former friend. "I be sayin' to myself as I put on the gloves, it hurts when you gotta kill a n---a you love," Fab raps on the hook.

It isn't all slow singing and flower bringing though. Fab and Meek Mill trade witty bars on "You Don't Know 'Bout It," and on "Spend It," Loso hooks up with Trey Songz as they deliver their take on 2 Chainz's underground hit of the same name.

With Fab's sixth studio album, Loso's Way 2, due out next year, TINC III is the perfect way to end a notable year for the Brooklyn MC, who made a killing in the streets.

Fabolous Will 'Evolve' On Loso's Way 2

Now that Fabolous has killed off his competition with Christmas mixtape There Is No Competition 3: Death Comes in 3s, the Brooklyn MC is fast at work on his sixth studio album, Loso's Way 2.

"Loso's Way 2 is a work-in-process. I put a lot in my mixtapes, but I definitely put a lot into my albums as well," Fab told MTV News, referencing the DJ Drama-helmed TINC 3 and the upcoming album. "I know a lot of people like mixtape Fab, and albums, to me, you're speaking to a broader audience sometimes. I take that at hand. I guess everybody doesn't see that."

Since his rise in the late 1990s on DJ Clue's street mixtapes, Fab has carved a niche as a witty lyricist, thanks to his clever punch lines and lyrics. It's a style that he expertly employs on each of his mixtapes, but when the "Make Me Better" MC gets into album mode, he has a different focus.

"With the album, I'm looking to evolve as well. Musically, everything I do, I want to keep growing," he said. "I think people have seen my growth album to album. From Ghetto Fabolous to Street Dreams to Real Talk to From Nothin' to Somethin' to Loso's Way, and now they will continue to see that with Loso's Way 2."

It wasn't that Fab lacked substance in any of his previous works. On each of his LPs he included a vast array of topics, packaging party anthems, love songs and story rhymes. But while many of the top MCs like Eminem, Kanye West and at times Jay-Z began to open up about their personal lives, the largely private Loso remained so.

Fab began to change things in 2009 when he released Loso's Way. The #1 LP was anchored by Fabolous-style radio hits like "Throw It in the Bag" and "Everything, Everyday, Everywhere," but the nimble-tongued MC also exhibited welcome artistic growth when he rapped about his love for his son Johan on the Marsha Ambrosius-assisted "Stay."

"It's all a process for me; I'm in a different place," he said. "My last album I was having my first son and now my son is almost 4 years old, so these are processes and you get to talk about those things. I will share them on the next album."

Since releasing "Stay," Fab has seen much more of his personal life spill out into reality shows and the tabloids. His son's mother, Emily Bustamante, is a star on VH1's "Love & Hip Hop" and has been sharing tidbits of her and Fab's relationship on the show. The rapper is not a fan. "It's just not my cup of tea," Fabolous told New York radio host Angie Martinez on her Hot 97 show earlier this month. "It's one side of what's going on. I don't bash it, but I'm not really in support of it, either. I don't think it depicts me the way I am. It just depicts a one-sided version of what's going on."

Fab's feelings about the show won't deter him from opening up on Loso's Way 2. "Children change a lot of stuff in your life," he said to MTV News. "They change the way you look at things and do things. And I think the music will reflect that, too."

Red Cafe Says Debut Album, Shakedown, Coming In 2012

'Fly Together' MC tells 'RapFix Live' that Bad Boy label is supportive.

It's been a long road, but Red Café insists his debut album, Shakedown, will be out at the top of 2012. The Brooklyn MC has been grinding since the early 2000s, and since 2005, has consistently landed notable singles on New York radio.

First, there was "Bling Blaow," then "Paper Touchin' " in 2008. A year later, Red broke out with "Da Hottest in Da Hood," and in 2010, he dropped "I'm Ill" with Fabolous and "Money, Money, Money" with Diddy.

On Wednesday's (October 19) edition of "RapFix Live," Red assured his fans that thanks to his current deal with Bad Boy Records, the album is on its way.

"I'm working on the album now with the Bad Boy team. [Bad Boy President] Harve [Pierre] and Puff, they in there with me, giving that support that I need to make a great album that I'll be proud of," the MC told Sway on the "RFL" couch.

Throughout his career, the raspy-voiced spitter has been through a number of record deals, including a few with Trackmasters, one with Mack 10's Hoo-Bangin' and a one-shot deal with Koch Records, where he dropped a collaborative album with DJ Envy in 2007.

After a couple of failed ventures and still no solo album in site, Red took matters into his own hands. "At that point, I just felt like I needed to grab the wheel and have control of my own destiny, because I'm goin' into these record companies, and I'm thinking it's good, and it's not really good," Red explained. "A lot of it, I blame myself too, because as a young guy coming into the game, you think when you get the deal, that's the victory."

His current single, "Fly Together," which features Rick Ross and Ryan Leslie, stands as an ode to independent women everywhere. If the growing popularity of the song is any indication, fans should have that LP in no time.

Until then, Red Café is remaining patient. "I was never frustrated," he said of his musical journey. "I felt like my moment would come when it comes."

Fabolous To Celebrate 10-Year Anniversary With Loso's Way 2 Release

'We're looking to do that around September 13," Fab says of his forthcoming album.

Time flies when you're making hits. On September 11, 2001, Brooklyn rapper Fabolous graduated from a slick-tongued mixtape MC to a bona fide platinum rap star with the release of his debut album, Ghetto Fabolous. To celebrate his 10-year run, Fab plans to release his sixth studio album, Loso's Way 2: The Rise to Power, on September 13. Mr. F-A-B-O revealed his plans to morning show radio jock Vezzy Parmesan of Rhode Island's Hot 106.3.

"That's coming in September, we're looking to do that around September 13 actually," Fab said of Loso's Way 2 from backstage at Hot 106's all-star Hot Night concert. "September 11 was when my first album dropped, 10 years ago. That was also the tragic day of 9/11. So my album dropped that same day and we kinda want to do like a 10-year-anniversary sort of feel."

Fab Pitt, whose last album, Loso's Way, featured collaborations from The Dream, Lil Wayne, Trey Songz and Ryan Leslie, wouldn't confirm who he will be working with on this album, but he did reveal a short wish list of artists he'd like to contribute in the future. Among those names are Eminem, Nas, Rick Ross and Fergie, but beyond that, Fab kept it tight-lipped. "I'm working with a lot of guys right now. It's still in the baby stages, so I don't want to give too much of the info right now, but it's soon to come."

Dropping the album 10 years after his first effort is symbolic for the rapper. He told Parmesan that the release of his debut remains his top career highlight. "To finally get to a point when you release your first album, it's like having a baby," he said. "It's like having your first baby, even just accepting it was happening at first."

Although Fab's shining moment was marred by the tragedy of 9/11, he eventually learned to embrace it. "I woke up that day and some planes flew into some buildings. That's another thing that makes it so monumental to me too, is that you were destined, even [with] what happened, you still prevailed and you're here today."

Ryan Leslie Says 'You Be Killin' 'Em 2' Is An 'Event'

R. Les tells MTV News 'supergroup' partners Fabolous, Ne-Yo bless remix, 'Look at Her,' with peek at what's to come.

NEW YORK — For any girl who takes her style seriously — like, blow the rent on a striped concoction from Prada's spring/summer 2011 collection serious — 2010 was a good year for primpin'-ain't-easy rap. Big, tag-flaunting singles like Drake's "Fancy" and Rick Ross' "Super High" expressed shock, awe and appreciation for girls and their fashion. And, for coining the word "shoe-icide" alone, the Ryan Leslie-produced Fabolous single "You Be Killin' 'Em" earned monster status on that playlist.

Now, Leslie is aiming to follow up the radio smash with another heater. We ventured downtown last week and caught up with R.Les just before he headed out for his Coachella festival debut. He gave us a preview of Les Is More, his first post-Universal, indie release due July 4, teased his much-discussed supergroup and let us in on "You Be Killin' 'Em" — the sequel.

"We just did a 'You Be Killin' 'Em,' part 2 called 'Look at Her,' " he said just minutes after the remix hit the Net last Tuesday. "I remember the night that we did it, we did it in-studio and then took it to Greenhouse and had [DJ] Suss-One bring it back like four, five times," Leslie smiled, reliving that night at the Soho nightspot. "I was about to leave and Suss-One was like, " 'Yo, I'mma bring it back two more times!' It's an event; it sounds like an event."

Leslie has considerably slowed the driving bassline on Funeral Fab's There Is No Competition 2 original, in favor of a synthy, sultry, top-down remix that has Ne-Yo "wailing on the chorus" and Loso spitting his "usual piercing and interrupting raps." Though R.Les has been rocking his MC hat lately, Harvard-educated singer/songwriter/producer stays mainly behind the boards on this one, save for a few adlibs.

Fans of the trio likely know that Ne-Yo's cameo is no accident. At least as far back as 2009, the musical threesome have been teasing a supergroup that would spawn an official release.

"It's something that we've been announcing and talking about for years, I guess, now," R.Les laughed. "There's just a really great chemistry. I mean, all three [of us are] super talented, passionate, really awesome creative people, and so we're just taking our time. It needs to be organic and it needs to feel honest," he added. "When we have a body of work that we feel reflects everything that we can bring to the table collectively then I don't think it'll be a problem. I think the demand will be there and I think the music will speak for itself.

Sensing they're already onto something, a confident Leslie told us, "I think if that collaboration is any indication, it's definitely gonna be a monumental project."

Meanwhile, R.Les has his hands in a range of projects, including Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne, a trilogy of cinema-style videos from Les Is More and, up next, the video for "Glory."

'Love & Hip Hop' Stars Talk Fabolous, Jim Jones, 50 Cent

Emily, Chrissy and Olivia spill all to MTV News before the Monday night premiere of their brand-new reality series.

Hip-hop is a lot like the title of Jim Jones' "Blow Your Smoke." For all of us ardent followers of this rhyming circuit of storytellers who weave aspirational fantasies about Bentleys and shopping sprees, it doesn't matter much that the German luxury car is a loaner or that the fresh-from-the runway Lanvin frock is going back to a publicist. To paraphrase the Diplomat boss, sometimes it's just about blowing smoke.

If anyone knows that rap is as much caked-in grime as it is glossy surfaces, it's the cast of VH1's brand-new docu-series "Love & Hip Hop," officially premiering Monday night (March 14) at 10:30 p.m. ET. On Friday, MTV News caught up with three of the principal castmembers — Chrissy Lampkin (longtime lady of Jim Jones), Emily Bustamante (mother of Fabolous' son) and Olivia Longott (ex-G-Unit songstress) — and they spilled details about their lives and the show.

"For me, the struggle is mostly the image struggle, keeping up with the image," Emily said, when asked what the biggest challenge was about being in a relationship with a famous rapper.

In the weeks since the "Love & Hip-Hop" teaser trailer hit the Net, viewers have been chirping about the women behind the MCs. But the biggest surprise for many fans is that these rappers have been in serious relationships at all. Seeing iconic or veteran rappers on shows like MTV's "Run's House" or E!'s "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood" is one thing, but the idea of a domesticated Fab, whose legion of female fans get worked up over his chipped tooth, is another.

"Me as a wardrobe stylist, I dress these guys, when they put on their bling and their clothes and their shades, they turn into a character," Emily explained. "So that's the biggest struggle for me, the image thing, having to deal with that."

Emily, who describes herself as Fab's "secret" in the premiere episode, recalled being approached by the execs behind "L&HH." She was sold on the chance to brand herself as wardrobe stylist "Emily B." So was Loso supportive?

Emily paused for a moment. "Was he supportive? ... He said, 'Eh, I don't know if that's a good idea.' ... He said, 'I'm not gonna tell you not to do it, but I don't know if it's a good idea.' So maybe he was right," she laughed, adding quickly, "For him!"

Meeting Chrissy helped cement the decision, and though Fab and Jim traded barbs on Twitter last April, their female counterparts proved fast friends.

"In the beginning, it was a pilot about me and Jimmy ['Jim and the Family Jones'], and he wasn't really comfortable with that," Chrissy explained. VH1 producers volunteered to bring in "some more females, make it more interesting," and eventually Emily, Olivia and aspiring rapper Somaya Reece were added to the cast; Emily's close friend Mashonda Tifrere (ex-wife of Swizz Beatz) also appears.

"If I don't have to work with Jimmy every day, I'm with it!" the ever-bouncy Chrissy, who actually proposes to Jim on the show, laughed. "He didn't want to be bothered with the cameras every day."

According to Olivia, best known for her turn on 50 Cent's G-Unit roster, including a feature spot on her ex-boss' hit "Candy Shop," the series is also about re-charging her music career.

"A lot of people don't really know the real Olivia. I felt like I was kind of sheltered being in the Unit, so this was a way for everybody to see my personality and see how I really am, especially when you see me with these two women," she said gesturing at Emily and Chrissy. " 'Cause we have a lot of scenes together. So you get to see the relationships and how we bond. ... It's a big deal for me because a lot of people also don't know that really I can sing, sing."

With fame in the balance — and all the negative press that can come with it already rearing its head — the ladies said they're just beginning to adjust to the media glare.

"I'm not really in the belly of the beast when it comes to the industry. I've been playing a supporting role to somebody who's going through all types of pitfalls, losses and gains," Chrissy said. "So I can see what it does, but I don't know what it truly feels like — until now, but this is very new, it's premature."
