For Jane's Addiction's first studio album in 13 years, the godfathers of alt-rock deliver moody melodies on Strays. Celebrating a collective, newfound sobriety and generosity of spirit on songs like the disc's lead single, "Just Because," Perry Farrell and company have transitioned into a band just as focused on achieving a harmonious society as on making music.

Meanwhile, Mya's Moodring indicates she's feeling randy. On her latest album, the former good girl focuses on her sexuality, as seen on songs like the lead single, "My Love is Like ... Wo," and "Anatomy One-on-One."

Kiss' bigger-is-better ethos is evident on The Kiss Symphony: Alive IV, which finds the rockers backed by the Melbourne Symphony on most of the tracks. As for the rest of them, Kiss stripped down to their regular rock and even included some acoustic versions of their classics.

Bob Dylan not only stars as a troubadour alongside Jeff Bridges and John Goodman in "Masked and Anonymous" but his music comprises the soundtrack as well. Also this week, the Super Furry Animals show their Phantom Power, Canibus introduces us to Rip the Jacker and the 13th volume of Now That's What I Call Music! delivers the compilation's usual mix of popular songs. In this case, that includes Justin Timberlake's "Rock Your Body," Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Glad," Sum 41's "The Hell Song," Coldplay's "Clocks" and Jay-Z's "Excuse Me Miss."

Finally, two old-school pop stars re-rear their Stiff Stuff-sprayed heads: Vanilla Ice releases the CD/DVD Hot Sex, with special guests the Insane Clown Posse, and former New Kid on the Block Danny Wood shows his Second Face. Does this one have a braided rattail on the back of it, too?

When penning Eve 6's "Think Twice," singer/bassist Max Collins bucked the first rule of writing. Instead of writing what he knew, Collins put himself in someone else's shoes and the fit was less than comfortable.

"No one was touching my girl at the time," Collins said of the song whose chorus threatens that an adulterer reconsider fooling with his woman. "I didn't write the song about anything that I was going through, so it was a bit of a struggle because that's not the way I normally write songs. But as I was writing it, I put myself in that place and I can't say that I liked it."

On Monday and Tuesday, Eve 6 were shooting a video for the tune, the first single off the band's third album, It's All in Your Head, due July 22, according to an RCA spokesperson. Directed by Bryan Barber (Outkast, Jagged Edge), the clip features Collins in a party setting, futilely trying to escape an intrusive camera's eye. That scenario is interspersed with performance footage and scenes of a couple's relationship gone awry.

"It's supposed to mimic the paranoia of the song," Collins said of his role. "[It's about] feeling alone even though there are lots of people in the room."

It's hard to say if he felt alone — or just a draft — when he bared all to roam the halls of a Pennsylvania hotel last month, an act that resulted in his arrest and a $517 fine (see "Eve 6 Singer's Naked Romp Through Hotel Ends In Arrest").

"When I drink I just feel like being naked," he revealed. "Being around our group of guys — bandmembers and crew — who are all friends from high school, it's easy for us to digress ... You know, when you're little and you're doing something you shouldn't be and you get overcome by laugher. That's sort of the goal when we get that bored. So it can be anything. Normally it's just silliness. Harmless stuff. A little too much booze probably plays a small part of it too."

Not too long ago, Collins and bandmates guitarist Jon Siebels and drummer Tony Fagenson wondered if they'd ever get the chance to lose their pants in a hotel again. Following their 1998 self-titled debut, which went on to sell more than 1.4 million copies largely due to the quick-worded hit single "Inside Out," the trio was poised to pick up on the high point where they exited. Instead, the decidedly more poppy Horrorscope debuted at #34 on the Billboard albums chart in July 2000, and promptly sunk. Less than three months later, it was out of the top 200.

Horrorscope would be resuscitated a year later, however, thanks to second single, "Here's to the Night," and it would go on to sell more than 657,000 copies. But while the band was on the road supporting it, doubts and anxieties that Eve 6 might have just been a passing fad were it not for a second wind on the wings of a prom theme surfaced.

"There was a feeling like, 'We want to keep doing this, but are we going to be able to?' " Collins explained. "There were times when we weren't sure we wanted to keep going, even."

A constant source of inspiration through those troubled times was Eve 6's fans. Despite sluggish record sales, concerts were packed — all Collins had to do was look at the line of faces in the front row singing along to all their songs — not just the singles — to know that Eve 6 had much more to offer.

"The touring was awesome at that point," he said, "so we just had to throw ourselves into that gear and forget about all that other stuff."

The new album's title alludes to that bout of uncertainty and Collins said he's since adopted it as something of a mantra whenever undue panic sets in. The result is an older and wiser Collins who said It's All in Your Head is the band's most honest album yet.

"We've grown up as individuals and with this record, we realized what we are. We don't have to try to be anything we're not. We write simple songs about life in general. We're not a band with a lifestyle that we're advertising. We're far from that. By realizing that, it's allowed us to write more honest, vulnerable emotional tunes."

To ease a rockstar's boredom of spending a night in a sleepy suburb of Pittsburgh, it helps if you're not wearing pants.

That might have been the rationale behind the decision by Eve 6's Max Collins to roam au natural through the halls of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, on Monday. Unfortunately for him, his naked attempt at amusement resulted in his arrest.

James Maxwell Collins, 23, was arrested for indecent exposure, a second-degree misdemeanor charge, at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to Moon Township Police Capt. Leo McCarthy.

The bucknaked singer/bassist strode up to the hotel's front desk around 11:45 p.m. Monday evening to ask for shaving cream, according to accounts by hotel employees. Only after he turned around to leave did they notice that Collins had taken the name of the 20,000-population town literally.

Police were called after guests repeatedly saw Collins walking the halls of the hotel as naked as the day he was born. The ruddy-faced singer was completely without clothes for all but one of the indecent incidents, according to police, and even that one wasn't an all-together clean affair.

"Multiple witnesses saw him walking completely nude through the hotel," Capt. McCarthy said, "except for one occasion where he had shaving cream over his genitalia.

"But his genitalia," added the captain, "could still be seen."

Collins was also spotted sitting at the lounge piano and riding the elevator bare-bottomed.

When police came calling at Collins' room, he answered the door naked and only covered up at the officers' request.

"He didn't seem to care that he was naked," the police report said.

The offense carries a penalty of up to two years in jail and a $5,000 fine, but authorities expect Collins, who posted bail and was released from the Allegheny County Jail on Tuesday, to pay a small fine.

"He was totally cooperative and respectful with our officers," Capt. McCarthy said. "We had no problem with this young man ... other than his behavior."

Because of his cooperation, the charges may even be reduced to disorderly conduct, which carries a maximum fine of $300.

A preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial is scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Eve 6, who've scored hits with "Inside Out" off 1998's Eve 6 and "Here's to the Night" off 2000's Horrorscope, were in town to perform at the X-Fest in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, a festival sponsored by Pittsburgh radio station 105.9 FM.

While he was being arrested, Collins asked police officers if their kids were familiar with his band, who incidentally have a new album, It's All in Your Head, set for release July 22 (see "Eve 6 To Continue Dodging 'Punk,' 'Garage' Labels On Latest LP").

Like Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty and Collective Soul, Eve 6 emerged out of a mid- to late-'90s music scene that never really had an identity.

Nowadays, when most bands carry tags like pop punk, garage rock or rap rock, it's not easy being a little bit of everything.

Still, Eve 6 wouldn't have it any other way.

"I think that's what's unique about us," guitarist Jon Siebels said Wednesday from a North Hollywood recording studio. "There's so many bands that are just one-trick ponies. We like to do all kinds of different stuff. 'Here's to the Night' and 'Inside Out' were two very different things, and to me that's a cool thing. It shows depth.

"Bands in genres have a built-in fanbase and a built-in group of bands to play with, but for us, we just got to be a little more creative," he added. "It's also good news because five years later we're still putting out records and we didn't fade away with a fad. The bottom line is it's just about good songs."

Eve 6's third record, It's All in Your Head, due July 22, is the band's most diverse offering yet. There's pop-rock songs like the trio's 1998 breakthrough hit, "Inside Out," borderline ballads like 2001's surprise single, "Here's to the Night," and then a few completely different tracks.

The album's first single, "Think Twice," is a hard-rocking angst anthem about struggling for the courage to leave an unfaithful lover. "Think twice before you touch my girl," Max Collins sings in the chorus. "Come around/ I'll let you feel the burn."

Collins wrote the song about a friend, but put himself in the situation.

"It wasn't one that I wanted to be on the record, to be honest," he said. "It wasn't a completely personal experience for me. It was a different kind of writing. It sounded different and I wasn't comfortable with that. So I tried rewriting it, going in different directions, and that wasn't working. So I backed up and listened to it and started to dig it from there."

The biggest stretch for Eve 6 on It's All in Your Head is "Hey Montana," a mostly acoustic track with a campfire sing-along feel.

"That's the song we're more excited about," Collins said. "It started as a verse I had written two years ago. I played it for our producer [Greg Wattenberg (Five for Fighting)] and it was never really talked about. Then, towards the end of recording, we were doing vocals and I was having an off night singing and I went into a corner and started playing that verse. The guys were like, 'Let's do that immediately.' It was a good thing that came from a doldrums period."

In the vein of "Here's to the Night" is "Girlfriend," which features a string section accompanying Collins, who sings, "Another tear, another lesson learned/ Now it's time to let you go/ And I will not be broken."

Equally emotional but quite different is the opening "Without You Here," a punk rock song clocking in at just two minutes and 18 seconds.

"It's a simple song about missing someone," Collins said. "After our last date of touring, I went to New York for a couple months with the intention of writing. I got there on September 9 and then there was the 11th. So I didn't end up writing much there, but I did meet my current girlfriend. The first song I wrote when I got back was about the weird sort of culture shock of coming back to L.A. after being in New York when it was insane."

Before It's All in Your Head hits stores, Eve 6 plan to play a few club shows around Los Angeles to get used to performing again. Once the album is released, the group hopes to snag an opening slot with another band &#8212 any band.

"We don't really think about that," Collins said, addressing the identity issue. "I don't know if we have a specific sound that people can call upon, but we know who we are and what we are."

When beginning work on their third album, pop-rockers Eve 6 found that to
get a better grip on themselves, all they had to do was loosen up.

"We kind of let go of our own strangleholds on ourselves," drummer Tony Fagenson said from the New York studio where the trio are nearly two-thirds finished with the follow-up to 2000's Horrorscope, which is expected to drop in the early spring. "The last record we had a very closed definition of what kind of music we wanted to do, and on this one the definition has kind of opened up a bit."

Further assisting Fagenson, bassist Max Collins and guitarist Jon Siebels in their foray into new frontiers was the move from recording in Los Angeles, where Horrorscope and 1998's self-titled debut were done and where the band members reside, to New York, where the band worked with producer Greg Wattenberg (Dishwalla, Five for Fighting). Fagenson credits the geographical shift with helping to develop the rougher edge he says the new songs take. It's like the difference between a well-manicured lawn in West Hollywood and a granite slab of sidewalk on the Lower East Side.

"We've moved a little bit out of the realm of punky sort of pop," he
explained. "They're still very much pop songs on this new record, but
there's probably even more of an edge on this record than either of the last
two. ... We're willing to lay it all out there for you this time. This is
just the most representative record of us that we've done so far. Not to
slag the other two records at all, because we're very proud of those, but
this is exactly the record we need to be making right now."

Eve 6 have readied 14 songs for the new LP, and they're in the process of
paring the load down to 12. Among those like to make the cut include the
tentatively titled "Think Twice," "At Least I'm Dreaming" and "Good Lives,"
whose theme Fagenson said was indicative of the album overall. While the
topic of questioning one's place in the world is timeless, it usually arises
at about the same phase in everyone's life.

"That just comes with being young adults in the time that we're living in,"
he said, "being 24-year-olds living in a very uncertain time —
especially in this nation — and wondering really what does it all
mean. I know that every generation asks this question — it's almost
every generation's job to ask this question. It's kind of a big question,
and the only question we're thinking about. 'Does anything we do really
matter in the long run?' "

After touring for 15 months in support of the slow-burning
Horrorscope, which didn't take off until "Here's to the Night" became
a high-school prom anthem 10 months after its release, Eve 6 wanted to hit
the studio almost immediately to start work on the follow-up. Fortunately,
they didn't, and the time spent between the end of their tour and starting
the recording process proved invaluable.

"We all needed to grow as people," Fagenson said. "And this last year has
been about finding ourselves a little bit and finding ourselves as a band
and really coming together. And if we had gone right into the studio and
done a record this time last year, we wouldn't have nearly quality that we
have right now. And I really say that with utter confidence because this is
the best stuff we've ever done and we're really excited about it."

Wyclef Jean, Macy Gray and Sheryl Crow are among the artists who will be heard on the fifth installment of the A Very Special Christmas series.

This year's edition, due November 6, features 15 traditional holiday songs rearranged or rewritten by artists from an array of genres, Interscope Records said.

A Very Special Christmas 4, released in the fall of 1999, was a live album recorded at a concert held the previous year in Washington, D.C. (see "Crow, Blige, Run-DMC On Live 'Very Special Christmas' Album"). The first three, like the new LP, were compilations.

A Very Special Christmas 5 also includes songs from Dido, City High, Eve 6, Stevie Nicks, B.B. King and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, among others.

Wyclef covers "The Little Drummer Boy," during which he breaks into the Calypso standard "Hot, Hot, Hot." He also produced City High's funky "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and raps on Stevie Wonder's "Merry Christmas Baby." Wonder also duets with singer Kimberley Brewer on "I Love You More."

"Merry Christmas Baby" is the first single from the LP, and a video for the song, featuring Wyclef in a Santa suit, is currently being cut.

Aside from producing the album with Bobby Shriver, Jon Bon Jovi contributes a bluesy rendition of "Blue Christmas." Bon Jovi and his namesake band have contributed to three of the four previous A Very Special Christmas records.

Most of the material on A Very Special Christmas 5 was recorded specifically for the LP, which, like the past projects, benefits the Special Olympics.

The new album includes a live version of Stevie Nicks' "Silent Night," which was featured on the first A Very Special Christmas in 1987.

A Very Special Christmas 5 track list, according to Interscope:

Macy Gray - "This Christmas"

Wyclef Jean - "The Little Drummer Boy/Hot, Hot, Hot"

Eve 6 - "Noel! Noel!"

Jon Bon Jovi - "Blue Christmas"
