Erasure's Andy Bell is HIV-positive, the singer announced Tuesday (December 14).

The disclosure is Bell's first step in a larger plan of speaking out and educating young people about HIV and AIDS, his spokesperson said.

"Being HIV-positive does not mean that you have AIDS," Bell said in a statement. "My life expectancy should be the same as anyone else's, so there is no need to panic. There is still so much hysteria and ignorance surrounding HIV and AIDS. Let's just get on with life."

The singer said he's known his HIV status since June 1998, when he suffered a bout of pneumonia. Since then, longtime partner Paul Hickey has also tested positive. Bell has been undergoing drug-combination therapy and said that not only is he feeling fine, he's feeling better than ever. He's also not about to let his condition slow him down, as Erasure are putting out a new album, Nightbird, on January 25 with an ambitious tour to support it.

The tour will start in the U.K. in February or March, followed by a U.S. leg of 10 to 15 cities, beginning in April or May, with multiple shows planned in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. As many as 10 nights are being considered for New York alone, and Erasure are considering adding on dates as benefit shows to raise money for AIDS research and awareness, Bell's spokesperson said.

"The last couple of albums were a bit moody and down," Bell said in a statement announcing the album last month. "I'm so much happier with everything now. ... You can hear it in the music."

Meanwhile, Chris Fox, Ashlee's drummer, posted a message on Simpson's site, taking blame for her infamous "Saturday Night Live" performance. During her visit, Kim will also hold a press conference and meet with faculty and students of the African-American Students Union.

Tori Amos is currently putting the finishing touches on her new album, The Beekeeper, which she's recording and self-producing in her U.K. studio, incorporating vintage organs, Afro-Cuban drums and gospel choirs in the process. The album will hit shelves February 22 to coincide with the release of her first book, "Tori Amos: Piece by Piece." ... Sarah McLachlan is releasing a live CD/DVD, Afterglow Live, which chronicles the singer's summer tour (her first outing since the 1999 Lilith Fair) in which she played her greatest hits as well as music from her 2003 album, Afterglow. The set, due out November 23, also includes behind-the-scenes footage of the tour and her family life, as well as her stark but touching video for "World on Fire," which juxtaposes the standard cost of making a video with what that money could do for those who are less fortunate. ...

In Gwen Stefani's current single, "What You Waiting For," Stefani pays a brief tribute to the girls of Harajuku, telling them they've got "wicked style." It seems out of place, like a throwaway line, but it's actually the set-up for another song on the album, called — what else — "Harajuku Girls," where the same lyrics become the basis of a chorus of sorts. In the song, Stefani sings, "Harajuku girls, you've got the wicked style/ I like the way that you are/ I'm your biggest fan." Other lyrics include "Your accessories are dead-on" and "Did you see your inspiration in my latest collection?" ...

California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said that Michael Jackson prosecutor Tom Sneddon should stay on the case. In a response to the singer's defense team's effort to force the Santa Barbara DA to step down and be replaced with another prosecutor, Lockyer said in a court filing that Jackson had "not come close" to proving any misconduct on Sneddon's part. As for Jackson's argument that Sneddon held a grudge against him, Lockyer said that Sneddon's zeal in prosecuting the singer is more likely attributed to the DA's belief in the "strong evidence supporting [Jackson]'s guilt." ... Pink, Danny Masterson and Sum 41's Cone McCaslin all checked out Courtney Love's performance at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre Saturday night. In the spirit of Halloween she wore a costume — a pink ballerina outfit complete with slippers. By the end of the set, the slippers and the sleeves of her outfit were torn off and the ill-fitting corset top gave fans an unintentional peep show. Love was quick to comment on her recent legal woes as she cracked open a can of soda and said, "It's a Diet Coke. Everyone in the band is drunk but me." She also lamented, "I've been in the news a lot lately ...there's no stage diving tonight," as her security guard seemed to have to physically hold her back from jumping into the pit of fans. ...

Although the Smashing Pumpkins packed it in a few years ago, that was far from frontman Billy Corgan's swan song. It did, however, make way for his Zwan songs. With the help of fellow rockers Dave Pajo (Slint, Tortoise), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Skunk), Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle) and Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, Mary Star of the Sea was born. (Check out Zwan's music at MTV.com First Listen.)

You'll be more mixed up than Kay Slay after the rest of this week's new releases shout-outs. Andy Bell can.

Next up is Lou Reed's dark mixed set, The Raven, which was inspired by the writings of horror master Edgar Allen Poe. David Bowie and Steve Buscemi are among the stars who contribute their voices to the album, which is filled with a seamless blending of Poe's poems and stories with Reed's, and also includes a new version of "Perfect Day."

Dirty Vegas' Night at the Tables features the group's own music, plus songs by the likes of dance and trance well-knowns Frankie Knuckles, Kylie Minogue and Underworld, while N.V.A. Straight From the Crates Vol. 1 houses new tracks by Mos Def, Black Moon, the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5. Finally, Papa Roach and N.E.R.D. team up for the "Biker Boyz" soundtrack, which also includes cuts from Jadakiss featuring Ron Isley, Redman featuring E3, and Metallica, Ja Rule and Swizz Beatz.

Erasure Launches "Cowboy" Tour

We would now like to thank heaven for Erasure for mounting the most interesting tour of the week, and maybe the year. Last weekend, the veteran English synth-pop band -- burbling sequencers, gay frontman and all -- launched a Stetson-and-spur-filled "Cowboy" tour after the group's new album of that name at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. Now this... is entertainment.

ERASURE: Hello Dallas!

MTV: Who else but Erasure would have the guts to dress up their new U.S. tour as a full-scale western musical? Armed with more than a decade of hits and a two-story brothel and saloon, an onstage campfire, a covered wagon, mirrored Stetsons, spurs as heels, and yes, even a walking cactus, Erasure's hit the road to help launch their brand new album, "Cowboy."

VINCE CLARKE: There's lots and lots of jokes that you can pull with that theme.

ANDY BELL: We thought to break from all the spectacle and to give a bit of intimacy with the audience, we'd just all gather around this
little fire and take our in-ear monitors out and play the guitar and show that we really can sing!

FAN 1: He has the most beautiful voice you've ever heard live. ["Oh L'Amour" from L.A. concert, 704k QuickTime]

FAN 2: Andy Bell is fantastic, he has great chemistry with his audience. ["Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me" from L.A. concert, 832k QuickTime]

FAN 3: He kept humping the microphone! He was goin' Woooo! Ride me, baby!

MTV: As attitudes continue to change over Erasure's 10 year plus career, openly gay frontman, Andy Bell, has noticed quite a difference in the audiences at their shows.

BELL: Say 10 years ago, 8 years ago, you could kind of feel the cringe factor if I did a campy move onstage or something. You might just hear things afterwards like, "Oh, Andy Bell's a real queer!" You could kind of feel the hairs standing
up on people's arms. But now it's much more -- you don't feel that at all. It's like, very calm and you have same-sex couples dancing and things and like, kissing and people just, they're all in together!

FAN 4: Oh, it was excellent! But it wasn't long enough, it needs to be longer!!!

FAN 5: He sang everything he needed to sing, though!

FAN 6: He could play for 10 hours and we'd still say it wasn't enough!

Erasure's "Cowboy" album is a return to pop single form, and if you want to check it out live, the group plays Washington, D.C., on Monday, and Philadelphia on Wednesday.
