Kelly Clarkson has rescheduled several tour dates she was forced to cancel earlier this month due to a lingering case of bronchitis. The new dates, which include shows in Texas, Washington, Nevada and California, will kick off December 7 in Hidalgo, Texas, and wrap December 18 in Spokane, Washington. ...

Last week Missy Elliott tore an Achilles tendon while rehearsing for TV Guide's Emmy party. A no-show surely would have been understood, but Missy sucked it up and on Sunday she not only appeared at the publication's shindig, she got onstage on crutches and performed. Missy is scheduled to go under the knife this week to repair the damage; there is no word yet on how long it will take for her to recover from the surgery. Elliott's rep says the rapper is in good sprits and resting. ...

Cassidy's murder trial is set to begin on January 18, according to the rapper's attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr. Cassidy has been incarcerated in a Philadelphia prison ever since turning himself over to police there on June 17; he was charged with the first-degree murder of 22-year-old Desmond Hawkins and the attempted murders of two other men, both charges stemming from the same April 15 shooting incident. ... Another of Perri's clients, Beanie Sigel, will be back in Philadelphia's Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday morning for the start of his attempted-murder trial. Beanie's being retried for the crime, as his first trial ended in a mistrial in April 2004, after the jury could not reach a unanimous decision. ...

System of a Down have set a November 22 release date for Hypnotize, the second half of their double album, Mezmerize/ Hypnotize. ... A 22-track Nirvana compilation, Sliver, is slated for release on November 1. The album will feature tracks from last year's With the Lights Out box set as well as three previously unreleased songs, according to a band spokesperson. ... Courtney Love just can't seem to catch a break. After being sent to rehab for the next six months, she was slapped with another lawsuit on Friday, while her mother is preparing to release a tell-all. Kristin King, whom Love pleaded no contest to assaulting in an April 2004 incident, has filed a civil suit against the singer in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging assault, battery, false imprisonment, and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. King, who already received $2,705 in restitution from Love as part of her plea bargain, is seeking unspecified damages. Meanwhile, therapist/writer Linda Carroll's forthcoming tome, called "Her Mother's Daughter: A Memoir of the Mother I Never Knew and of My Daughter, Courtney Love," promises to reveal the singer's "true history," including her mood swings as a baby, her dark moods and paranoia as she was growing up, and the source of the mother and daughter's estrangement. It's due January 17, 2006. ...

The Arcade Fire, M.I.A., Gorillaz, Death Cab for Cutie, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Common, David Banner and Rilo Kiley are among the slew of nominees for mtvU's second-annual Woodie Awards, which honor the music voted best by the college crowd. The Arcade Fire top the list with five nominations, including Woodie of the Year (Best Artist), Left Field Woodie (Most Original Artist) and Road Woodie (Best Tour). The Bravery will be battling Motion City Soundtrack, the Decemberists, Matisyahu and Paul Wall for the title of the Breaking Woodie (Best Emerging Artist), while Coldplay, U2 and Common are all up for the Good Woodie, for artists who have made the greatest social impact in 2005. You can cast your vote for your favorites at mtvu.com before October 28; winners will be announced during a ceremony to be taped at New York's Roseland Ballroom on November 2 and to air on mtvU November 10. ...

On November 15, Green Day will release "Bullet in a Bible," their live DVD featuring moments from their two-night stand at the massive Milton Keynes Bowl in England. The DVD — directed by frequent collaborator Samuel Bayer — features 14 tracks spanning the band's career, from their first hit, "Longview," to a nine-minute performance of "Jesus of Suburbia." The DVD will also include backstage footage and interviews with the band. ... Fort Minor, Mike Shinoda's hip-hop side project, will release two tracks, "Petrified" and "Remember the Name," to various online stores on October 4. A 12-inch single is being shipped to club and radio DJs. ...

VH1's Hip Hop Honors is doing a little more than just uniting En Vogue and Salt-N-Pepa to perform their 1993 hit, "Whatta Man" — it also convinced En Vogue to give it another go. Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson and Terry Ellis — the original quartet — are getting the group back together again, though official plans for a new record or tour have yet to be announced. Their performance can be seen Monday at 9 p.m. ET on VH1. ... Detroit rapper Hush, a former Mississippi resident who has cousins affected by Hurricane Katrina, is hosting a benefit for the American Red Cross on October 9 at Detroit's Emerald Theater. D12's Proof and Swift will be special guests. ...

Incubus just entered the studio to start recording their sixth album, but in the meantime, fans can hear some of guitarist Mike Einziger's original music in the score for the just-released documentary "Flow," about surfboard maker Al Merrick and the Channel Islands Surf Team. Singer Brandon Boyd, who was named MVP of Sunday's Surfrider Celebrity Surf Jam in Huntington Beach, California (he and Einziger's team won), narrates the movie, which also includes some Incubus songs. ... When Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, launched the "Stop the Bop" fundraising campaign for Hurricane Katrina victims, they were counting on students' hatred of Hanson's "MMMBop." The song was played over the PA every day until the five-figure goal was reached, at which time the blasting of the track finally ceased. What students didn't expect, though, was for Hanson themselves to get involved. When they heard about the campaign, the brothers matched the funds raised and donated a copy of their latest album, Underneath, to every student. ...

The late Joey Ramone was awarded the Heeb Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Jewish Music Awards Monday night in New York. Ramone's mother accepted the honor on behalf of her son, who died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Others receiving the soon-to-be coveted Golden Bagel were Edan for Best Hip-Hop, Rashanim for Best New Klezmer Band and Golem for Best Jewish Punk Band, who expressed some surprise that anyone considered them a punk band. Matisyahu won for Best New Approach, the meaning of which was never actually made clear; he beat out Peaches, Perry Farrell and A Silver Mt. Zion for that honor. ... Jon Bon Jovi appears on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Wednesday to contribute a check for $1 million to her Angel Network to help Hurricane Katrina survivors rebuild their lives. "The band and I want you to continue your good deeds," he tells her on the show. "You can steward this so that it gets to the people that need it." The show is syndicated, so check local listings to catch it. ...

09.19.2005

On Monday morning (September 19), rapper Lil' Kim was assigned to a federal detention center just outside Philadelphia, where she began serving a 366-day sentence stemming from her conviction in March on three counts of perjury and conspiring to lie to a grand jury. "Today begins a new saga in my life which I expect to strengthen me and allow me time for reflection," she said in a statement. "I am blessed to have so many great things in my life — family, friends and God. All will be in my thoughts daily. I plan to write music while in prison, read and pray regularly and will come out a stronger, more confident woman." The statement goes on to mention how her fourth album, The Naked Truth, hits stores on September 27, and ends with Kim thanking her fans for "their thoughts and prayers." ...

Louisiana native Britney Spears is awarding two grants from her foundation to assist in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. One grant will go to Habitat for Humanity to support Operation Home Delivery, a long-term rebuilding plan for families along the Gulf Coast affected by the disaster, and the other donation will be handed over to the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, for school supplies, transportation and other materials that can be used to help ease the financial burdens of their schools, which are taking in up to 7,000 displaced New Orleans students. ... So what does Britney's old fellow Mouseketeer Christina Aguilera have to say about the Federlines' new bundle of joy? "My assistant came in the room when it happened and she's like, 'Britney had a boy!' and I was like, 'Oh my gosh!' I don't know where I was for a while when she was pregnant but it really kicked in at that point," Aguilera told MTV News at the Us Weekly Young Hollywood Hot 20 event on Friday. "It's like, wow, she had a baby! That's crazy! I'm overjoyed and thrilled for her." Aguilera said she has already sent Spears a baby gift and a card. "It's such an exciting time in her life and I just wish her the best," she added. ...

Nine Inch Nails' set Friday night at San Diego's Cox Arena was cut short when drummer Jerome Dillon fell ill. The band also canceled its concert in Tucson, Arizona, Saturday night because of the "unexpected health problems," according to the Nine Inch Nails Web site. "Jerome is much better now and Monday's show in Phoenix will go on as scheduled." There was no further information on what, precisely, Dillon's health concerns were, or if the scrapped date would be rescheduled. Ticket holders can seek refunds at point of purchase. ... A fiery-red-headed Madonna, sporting a hot pink ensemble complete with body-skimming dance shorts and high heels, strikes a pose on the cover of her new album, Confessions on a Dancefloor, out November 15. The Material Girl collaborated with renowned fashion photographer Steven Klein and graphic designer Giovanni Bianco to create the album artwork, which the singer unveiled exclusively to her fans on her Web site on Saturday. ...

Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Patti Smith and Damian Marley have joined the ever-growing list of supporting acts for U2's North American tour this fall, joining previously slotted performers Dashboard Confessional and Keane, according to U2's spokesperson. Marley will open for the band October 16-November 9; Smith will warm up crowds on the November 21-22 gigs; Arcade Fire are slated for three Canadian dates, November 25, 26 and 28; and West will wrap up the trek, opening from December 14 to the final gig on the 19th in Portland, Oregon. ... T.I., Jill Scott and Pretty Ricky will be among the guest servers at a New York luncheon to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims on Saturday. The International Association of African-American Music Foundation is hosting the event, at Negril Village. ...

Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society will perform a benefit gig on October 11 at City Hall in Nashville. All of the show's profits will go to the American Red Cross and its efforts to assist those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. "The bottom line is this — we have a lot of Black Label brothers and sisters in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama," Wylde said. "We know we have to do the right thing to help out the thousands of volunteers, National Guard, Armed Forces and the local police. It's the least we can do to help out. When family is down, you pick them up. Now it's time to kick some ass." ... Canadian punk band SNFU have called it quits, according to their Web site. "It's my feeling that SNFU has done everything that we had set out to do," wrote guitarist Marc Belke, who intends to return to school. "Thanks again to everyone who has come to see us play, bought our CDs and wrote in to our Web site." ...

The body of Twisted Method guitarist Andy Howard was found Friday in the bedroom of his Cape Coral, Florida, home. Charlie Pennachio, Twisted Method's manager, confirmed Howard's death on Monday morning; the results of an autopsy are expected shortly. "We're not sure if it was drug-related or not," Pennachio said. "He had heart and lung problems. This just flat-out sucks." Twisted Method, who spent the summer of 2003 as part of the Ozzfest trek, went on an indefinite hiatus in late July; Howard left the group in May because he wanted to devote more time to his newborn twin daughters, the manager said. Two members of the group, vocalist Derek Tibbett and bassist Derek DeSantis, launched a new outfit, Makeshift Romeo. Howard's funeral will be held on Tuesday. He was 23. ... Bassist Didz Hammond has decided to leave the Cooper Temple Clause. "Situations are not as they were five years ago, and neither should they be," he said in a statement posted to the band's Web site. "Life is about movement and change. I've been to hell and back making this decision, but my mind is set and so I go. But if I thought that my leaving would kill the Coopers, then I would never have considered leaving at all." Before he officially takes leave of the band, though, he'll stay on to help the Coopers finish their as-yet-untitled follow-up to last year's Kick Up the Fire and Let the Flames Break Loose. ...

Remember "Seether"? The band behind the ubiquitous alt-rock single from 1994 is back: Veruca Salt are re-forming and planning a tour of the U.S. in October, according to their Web site. The group, whose last album was 2000's Resolver, hasn't announced if it's got any new music in the works, though. Veruca Salt are also now apparently a three-piece, with frontwoman Louise Post the only original member still in the band. ...

SAN DIEGO — As Justin Guarini hammed his way through the last of his three solo songs at Tuesday's "American Idol" tour opener, a number of the tickled young girls jammed into Cox Arena pointed their cell phones toward the stage.

It was unclear whether they were treating their friends to a quick listen or calling the other Justin (Timberlake, that is) to tell him their hearts have moved on.

Guarini may or may not be the most talented of the 10 "American Idol" finalists (obviously Kelly Clarkson was the country's favorite), but his natural stage presence compared to the others on the tour easily won over Tuesday's crowd.

And isn't that what the "American Idol" tour is really about? You being the judge, filling in for the brash Simon Cowell, determining which of the finalists is best transforming their 15 minutes of TV fame into legitimate pop star status?

On this cross-country journey, there is no Paula Abdul to tell Jim Verraros that his choreography is two steps behind everyone else. There is no Randy Jackson to say, "Nikki, Nikki, Nikki, your rendition of Fleetwood Mac's 'Rhiannon' was off key."

There are only legions of fans dressed like their favorite "Idols," or in some cases, wearing homemade T-shirts rooting on RJ Helton or Tamyra Gray.

Jackson appears only once, in a taped video message introducing the first song of the evening, EJay Day's "Black Cat." From there, the show takes fans through the finalists as they were voted off, with each "Idol" singing a song, offering some generic gratitude and setting up a video montage of the next performer.

Verraros followed Day with "Easy," but appeared anything but as he rose from center stage on a bench dressed in all white. He moved awkwardly around the stage, and at the song's most poignant moment, Verraros asked, 'Where are your lighters?" perhaps forgetting most of the crowd wasn't old enough to smoke.

A.J. Gill greeted the room with, "Hello, San Diego, my birthplace," before breaking into "My Cherie Amour," which included a funkier dance breakdown than the rendition he performed on TV.

With her long dark hair draped over most of her face, Ryan Starr followed with "If You Really Love Me." Christina Christian picked up where Starr left off with the more adventurous "Ain't No Sunshine." She looked like Janet Jackson, but sounded like India.Arie as her rich voice belted out a dozen "I knows" midway through the Michael Jackson classic. After asking the audience to "come dance with me," Christian enticingly shook her booty and spun in a circle.

Smoke filled the stage to welcome RJ Helton, who crooned "Lately" as hundreds of flashing cameras created a strobe effect. And that proved helpful, since the spotlight blacked out a couple of times. (Technical difficulties, including disruptive feedback, plagued much of the show.)

The "American Idol" theme music from the video montages (which grew increasingly annoying as the show progressed) mistakenly continued over Tamyra Gray's opening seconds of "I'm Every Woman," but it was hardly noticeable over the crowd, which sang along to the Whitney Houston hit.

Nikki McKibbin, who was all about sole (at least three inches on her boots) and soul, followed with her saucy version of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart." McKibbin brought a little needed rock and roll into the show, using pyro, shouting out her guitar player after his solo and screaming instead of singing the final note.

"I know you love this next performer, and he's going to do something you have never seen him do," McKibbin said in introducing Guarini, who rose on a center-stage platform playing piano and singing "Get Here." When he twirled off the bench to face the crowd, the arena went nuts, particularly an older man in the front row — Guarini's now famous father.

Clarkson finally took the stage to the tune of Aretha Franklin's "Respect," the song that quite possibly won her the "American Idol" title. While Clarkson was a smidgen weaker than during her TV performance of the classic, she was still a highlight. And the crowd roared for nearly a minute afterward as she humbly smiled before finally flashing the devil horns, heavy metal's version of a wave.

After intermission, the "American Idol" tour took off like it should have begun. The guys, sporting typical boy band attire (spray-painted jeans and all), opened with 'NSYNC's "Pop," and although they didn't quite pull off the choreography, it was still fun and, more importantly, new. Gill, the best dancer of the bunch, proved he would be the perfect replacement for the other A.J. (McLean, that is) should he ever leave his post as the bearded bad boy of the Backstreet Boys.

The girls, dressed in red and black, took over the stage with En Vogue's "Free Your Mind." With easier choreography, they nailed the singing, and looked sexy doing it, particular vixen Starr in a tiny skirt and top.

The rest of the show was similar to the recent "American Idol in Las Vegas" special, complete with both the Motown and disco medleys.

McKibbin and Gray each also did one more song ("Rhiannon" and the spectacular "A House Is Not a Home," respectively), and Guarini and Clarkson sang two more apiece.

The two RCA Records artists — Guarini's signing was announced Wednesday (see " 'American Idol' #2 Justin Guarini Inks Recording Deal") — chose ballads to please their fans, with Guarini handling "For Once in My Life" and Al Green's "I'm Still in Love With You" and Clarkson crooning "Natural Woman" and the "American Idol" single "A Moment Like This."

The latter, although sung well, was nearly overshadowed by cheesy ocean waves appearing on the screens behind Clarkson. Fortunately, her cute-as-a-button Southern charm kept it a tender moment.

Sappy versions of "That's What Friends Are For" and "I'll Be There" capped off the show, with all the finalists trading verses and dance moves. Fireworks erupted as the group took a bow, but not before unofficial leader Guarini sincerely thanked the crowd for making his summer.

"No, thank you, 'American Idol,' " a girl near the front answered.

The tour hits Phoenix on Thursday (see " 'American Idol' Finalists Plan Arena Tour, Compilation Album").

After spending years in En Vogue, recording an album with the short-lived Lucy Pearl and contributing backing vocals to a number of artists, Dawn Robinson has decided to keep her silky, soulful voice all to herself.

Robinson's debut solo album, Dawn, will hit stores October 16, with the sassy, uptempo single "Envious" leading the way at radio in mid-September.

The R&B singer/songwriter recorded the album in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Los Angeles with such songwriting and production collaborators as PAJAM ('NSYNC, Sisqó) and Travon Potts (Christina Aguilera, Monica), according to her publicist.

The 12-song disc also will include the ballad "Just Get Up" and "MOW," an En Vogue-esque number with a new jack swing rhythm. Other songs are "Set It Off," "Party Party," "Fed Up," "Read It in My Eyes," "Still," "I Don't Know Why" and "You Will Never."

"I grew as a singer, songwriter and artist, and when it was over I felt a great sense of accomplishment," Robinson said in a statement. "There's something for all the En Vogue and Lucy Pearl fans, and the new Dawn fans as well."

While with En Vogue, Robinson scored such hits as "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and "Hold On," but she left the group in 1997.

In late 1999 she formed Lucy Pearl with Tony! Toni! Toné! founder Raphael Saadiq and ex-A Tribe Called Quest DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The trio released their self-titled album the following May.

Robinson claimed she was shocked when her bandmates announced late last year that R&B singer Joi had replaced her (see "Dawn Robinson: Lucy Pearl Replacement 'A Big Shock'"). Lucy Pearl are now dormant. Saadiq announced earlier this month that he is recording a solo album (see "Raphael Saadiq Taps D'Angelo, Angie Stone For Solo Debut").

You may not have heard of Lucy Pearl yet, but expect to in the near future.
Raphael Saadiq, who spent ten years making hits as part of R&B trio Tony! Toni! Tone!, has joined former En Vogue vocalist Dawn Robinson and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the man behind many of the beats for the recently retired A Tribe Called Quest, to form the mysteriously named group.
Saadiq has collaborated for years with Ali and his Tribe cohorts and is even a card-carrying member of the Tribe's production entity, The Ummah. So how, you might ask, did Robinson come into the Lucy Pearl fold?
"Dawn's from Oakland, and we've always been good friends," Saadiq, also from Oakland, told the MTV Radio Network. "We always used to run into each other at the restaurants, and I just told her about the group. I said, 'Just check it out, tell me what you think,' and we hooked up and we starting to write now, and she likes it, so we're trying to put it together right now."
Meanwhile, Muhammad's former
Tribe bandmates, Q-Tip and Phife, have been launching their respective solo careers. Q-Tip is currently enjoying his first solo hit with "Vivrant Thing," the first single off "Violator: The Album." As previously reported by MTV, Q-Tip is preparing to release his debut solo album, "Amplified," which should hit stores in November (see "Q-Tip Gets 'Amplified' For Debut Solo Album").
Meanwhile, Phife Dawg has just recorded a solo single, "Bend Ova." The track was produced by Jay Dee of the group Slum Village and features a b-side titled "Thought U Wuz Nice."

December 19 [14:00 EDT] -- En Vogue member Terry Ellis visited Manhattan's Inwood House this week to speak with young mothers and pregnant teens. During Ellis' visit, the singer encouraged young women to develop the self-confidence and determination to pursue their own dreams.

Ellis is a living example of what she preaches. She has had a successful recording career with En Vogue and as a solo artist, and she now has her own fragrance line called "Terry Ellis Southern Exposure."

In addition, Ellis will develop her own line of products. She told our colleagues at MTV Radio, "I'm planning an extension line now... bath oils, bath gels, candles, I'm going to do a book, just the works. And these are all things that I particularly like. I didn't want to do anything just for the sake of doing it. I wanted to do things that really represent who I am. I couldn't promote it if it really weren't me."

Ellis is currently on promotional tour for her fragrance.

July 3 [7:55 EDT] -- The sleek vocal group En Vogue is back after a four-year hiatus, and is trying to get used to working as a trio after Dawn Robinson left the group earlier this year.

"It takes some adjusting," EV's Terry Ellis told MTV News.

"We've been working really, really hard. Aesthetically, obviously, there's three people. Vocally, we got with a vocal coach to rearrange our harmonies, and we worked really hard at it. And we think we got it."

The work may have paid off, as the group's latest effort, "EV3," entered the "Billboard" album chart at number eight after its first week in stores. While the band is doing well on the charts, and all parties say the split was amicable, the remaining members of En Vogue still felt a sense of sadness at Robinson's departure.

"We were very sorry to see her go, but we understood," Maxine Jones said.

En Vogue will showcase its new, pared-down line-up with a U.S. tour this fall, by which time the Robinson's solo album (produced by Dr. Dre) may be in the racks, too.

June 26 [12:00 EDT] -- En Vogue, the Lost Boyz, and Megadeth scored top ten debuts on the "Billboard" album charts in a week of very little chart activity.

Bob Carlisle, he of the super-sweet ballad "Butterfly Kisses," is once again in the top spot on the album chart, followed by the Spice Girls and Tim McGraw. After debuting at number one, and slipping to number two in its second week, the Wu-Tang Clan is at number four with "Wu-Tang Forever."

The Dawn Robinson-less En Vogue scores the highest debut of the week, landing at number eight with "EV3." Two other new releases, Lost Boyz's "Love, Peace & Nappiness" and Megadeth's "Cryptic Writings," follow right behind at number nine and ten respectively.

The singles chart is even more motionless this week, as Puff Daddy and Faith Evans hold on to number one with the Notorious B.I.G. tribute "I'll Be Missing You." With the exception of Meredith Brook's "Bitch" moving from number four to number three, bumping Mark
Morrison's "Return of the Mack" down to four, the top ten singles are unchanged from last week.

Things are a bit more lively over on the modern rock chart, where Third Eye Blind finally nabs the top spot with "Semi-Charmed Life." The track pushes the Mighty Mighty Bosstones "The Impression That I Get" down to number two, while the rest of the top seven remains unchanged. There is a bit of shuffling near the bottom of the top ten, where Blur's "Song 2" and Foo Fighters' "Monkey Wrench" slip up to number eight and nine, and Depeche Mode's "It's No Good" drops from eight to ten.

En Vogue Will Be Live On "Saturday Night"

May 14 [16:00 EST] -- En Vogue trumpet the upcoming release of its new album with an appearance on this week's "Saturday Night Live."

The soul outfit will return to the "SNL" soundstage that it graced back in 1992 when it was supporting "Funky Divas." The group's performance on the show this time around (with guest host Jeff Goldblum) comes as the release of "EV3" looms ahead on June 17.

As we reported in April, the group's performance will include the first single off of the act's new album, "Whatever," which was produced by Midas touch producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

The group's performance will also feature En Vogue as a trio instead of the quartet that fans have come to know and love. Dawn Robinson left the group in April to pursue a solo career, leaving fellow Vogue-ers Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis, and Cindy Herron to carry on.

Robinson, who provided the lead voice for En Vogue recent top ten hit "Don't Let
Go," [215k sound file] signed on with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, and should release her solo debut (produced by Dre) later this year.
