Missy Elliott's 'Eavesdropping' Led To Monica's 'So Gone'

'I'm embracing the things that are different now and the things that have changed for me,' Monica tells MTV News of New Life album.

Monica may have titled her latest album New Life, but there are some things the velvety-voiced singer wanted to keep the same — including her working relationship with Missy Elliott.

"New Life was just me saying, 'This is the place that I'm at and I'm embracing the things that are different now and the things that have changed for me,' " she told MTV News on Tuesday (April 10).

The duo have worked together for years, and in 2003, they came up with one of Monica's most memorable songs to date: "So Gone." It's a chemistry that neither wants to abandon anytime soon.

"Missy is one of my dearest friends, and I think her humility and her compassion for other people is what makes her music so great," Monica said.

The bond that both women share is the reason they yield such memorable results. "Knock Knock," "A Dozen Roses (Remind Me of You)" and the Grammy-nominated "Everything to Me" are just a few of the records on which they've collaborated. Monica counts "So Gone" as her favorite to date.

"She wrote that record after eavesdropping on my phone conversation," Monica recalled, laughing. "So when you think about things like that, that can only be done by somebody that's very close to you."

Elliott didn't write Monica's lyrics — Jazmine Sullivan gets credit for that — but Missy did produce the breakup ode. The two worked out of Missy's house in Atlanta and came up with songs that were vocally challenging for the veteran singer. This time, though, there was no eavesdropping.

"When it came to 'Until It's Gone,' I probably was just sharing," Monica laughed. "I was already in a sharing mood."

J. Cole may have started with a dollar and a dream on his 2007 mixtape The Come Up, but the Roc Nation MC has amassed so much more since releasing his major-label debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story, last year. He earned himself a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and even though he lost out to Bon Iver on Sunday night, Cole lived out another dream this past week: shooting a video with his idol Missy Elliott.

"We just shot the video with Missy Elliott for 'Nobody's Perfect.' My god, that was a moment — that was a moment," Cole told Sway from the Grammy red carpet right before the big show.

In the late 1990s, Missy, who had already spent years behind the scenes as a songwriter, made her mark with a string of hit singles starting with 1997's "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)." Her music really had an impact on then-teenaged Cole, so shooting the video for the next single off of Cole World means just a bit more to him. "I can tell you Colin Tilley directed it, incredible visuals. It'll probably be my best video yet, visually," he said before gushing about Elliott. "Man, just to have Missy on that set and to see her singing the song that I wrote. It's Missy, I don't think people really understand; that's my era and how I look at her and how creative she is and her and Timbaland and the things that they did. That was a beautiful moment right there."

Cole is excited about all of his recent strides, but in no way is the MC content. He revealed to Sway that he plans to hit the road for a four-week college tour and that he was in the lab working on his sophomore album. Not that he would reveal anything beyond that. "I won't give details; I learned my lesson from the last one," he said. "But I'm back to work heavy."

Missy Elliott And Timbaland To Drop Solo LPs In June

'We want to do it as a movement,' Timbo tells MTV News of releasing new material at the same time.

Timbaland and Missy Elliott make a perfect musical match. Though it's been a while since we've seen the two in full swing, the Virginia duo will join forces once again in a very big way later this year.

"Me and Missy are both coming with our albums at the same time, and it will be in June," Timbo told MTV News in his Miami home February 3.

It's been three years since Timbaland released Shock Value II and seven years since Missy dropped The Cookbook. If all goes according to plan, fans won't have to wait much longer.

"Right now, we're preparing to get both our videos, our first singles, shot kinda at the same time," Tim said. "We want to do it as a movement and spontaneously."

Last June, Missy revealed to People magazine she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder Graves' disease. Initially, it was speculated that Missy's health was the cause of the huge gap in her discography, though Elliott later issued a statement dismissing that notion.

The "Get Ur Freak On" rapper has been putting in plenty of work behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer for Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jazmine Sullivan. She even hooked up with Timbo on Demi Lovato's "All Night Long" from the pop singer's 2011 Unbroken album. Missy is also a guest vocalist on J. Cole's next single, "Nobody's Perfect," and is expected to appear in the song's upcoming video.

It all seems like an exciting build to a triumphant return for both artists. "I just don't want to move too ahead of her and she don't want to move too ahead of me," Timbaland said. "So we're both doing it at the same time."

Demi Lovato 'Stoked' About Missy Elliott, Timbaland Collabo

Unbroken track with legendary duo is a jam about 'staying up all night long,' Demi tells MTV News.

LOS ANGELES — Demi Lovato is ready to launch the next phase of her music career. She dropped her moving ballad "Skyscraper" earlier this summer and now fans are ready to hear what else the singer has up her sleeve when she releases her album Unbroken in September.

While the album will feature a number of collabos with artists like Jason Derülo, Iyaz and Dev, one track in particular, "All Night Long," features two of urban radio's biggest '90s superstars, Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Last week, Lovato spoke to MTV News and told us that working with the legendary duo, who helped shape the careers of singers like Aaliyah, couldn't have been more of a dream come true.

"I was so stoked when I went into the studio. I was working with Timbaland, and Missy was there, and she was like, she heard one of the songs and she asked if she could rap on it," Lovato recalled about their July recording session.

"And I was like, 'Of course, that's not even a question.' And she did, and she killed it."

According to Lovato, the party track is pretty much the polar opposite of "Skyscraper," showing off a whole new side of the 19-year-old. "The song that Missy and I did together, Timbaland's actually on it, too, and it's fun," she said. "It's about staying up all night long and singing it to the boy that you like, and it's flirty and fun and it's not too grown-up, but it's grown-up enough."

Lovato has already started making the rounds to promote the upcoming album, including a fan meet-and-greet in Los Angeles last week and a performance at Perez Hilton's pre-VMA party. She went on to present Best Collaboration at the VMAs on Sunday night.

Next month, Lovato will play two shows, one each in New York and one in Los Angeles.

Demi Lovato's Unbroken Track Listing Reveals Missy Elliott, Jason Derulo Collabos

Demi Lovato wasn't kidding when she teased some star-studded collaborations for her comeback album Unbroken. On Tuesday, the Disney star revealed on her website that her upcoming set (due September 20) will include musical pairings with Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Jason Derülo, Dev and Iyaz.

While Lovato's power-ballad lead single "Skyscraper" nabs a place toward the end of Unbroken, all of her studio team-ups appear at the beginning of the 15-song lineup. Hip-hop heavyweight partners Missy Elliott and Timbaland assist the songstress on "All Night Long," while electro-pop singer Dev lends her voice to the Ryan Tedder-produced "Who's That Boy?" Lovato continues the star power with Iyaz on "You're My Only Shorty" and concludes the collabo party with Jason Derülo on "Together."

Some of the other songs on the set include "Unbroken," "Mistake," "Give Your Heart a Break" and a Wizz Dumb remix of "Skyscraper."

Lovato recently spoke to Ryan Seacrest about "All Night Long," describing it as "one of the best experiences."

"Missy Elliott got on one of the tracks, and it's called 'All Night Long.' It was really fun!" she gushed.

Lovatics already know how the pop star's collaboration with Timbaland came about. Back in January, the R&B hit-maker reached out to Demi via a YouTube video message, sharing a snippet of a song he had whipped up for her. Lovato was still checked into a treatment center for "emotional and physical issues" at the time.

Collabos aren't the only thing fans have to look forward to as the singer/actress also announced her first two Unbroken concert dates, in New York City and Los Angeles, which take place just in time for the album's release.

The name Josh Baze may not ring any bells. He's not attached to any big-time artists or an underground movement, nor does he have the backing of a major label. But in spite of his low profile, the Brooklyn-born MC is gearing up for the release of the Hype Williams-directed video for his first official single, "We Made It."

The collabo with Hype puts Baze in good company, as Williams has directed debut videos for Missy Elliott, the Wu-Tang Clan and Busta Rhymes, among others. And while only time will tell if Baze will be one day be mentioned in the same breath as those stars, he sure hopes so. The 21-year-old told Mixtape Daily he started rapping in his teens and always had a passion for the mic.

"I started off on the desks in my elementary school. I started getting into the studio around 16. After I learned how to do a track, and I just laid down my first 16, it was a wrap," Baze said. "My dad was a DJ, so just having him around and watching music get built inside of my house, it was a blessing, because I got to learn so much, man."

Baze (rhymes with haze) grew up listening to and idolizing fellow Brooklyn MCs the Notorious B.I.G and Jay-Z because of their ability to lyrically depict their neighborhoods and day-to-day struggles. He hopes to do the same on his debut EP, which is aptly titled The EP and slated to drop in September.

"The EP is basically 21 years of my life. It's basically about stories of relationships, ex-girlfriends, family members; the good, the bad, the ugly, whatever," Baze explained. "I just really want to give people a journey of where I came from, which is Brooklyn all the way to Hollywood."

Baze linked up with Hype after the rapper's manager, Griffin Guess, played the famed director some of his music, piquing Williams' interest.

"I grew up watching this guy direct and make dreams, so it was really inspiring just to have him shoot my first video. It's a blessing to have a hip-hop pioneer direct my first video, and he's so cool and humble," Baze said. "It's not even just as a director but as a real friend, and just building that relationship conquered a lot."

Baze promised the album will feature some unique sounds, which isn't surprising considering he's working with acts like Jamie Foxx and deadmau5.

Missy Elliott Reveals Battle With Graves' Disease

For a while, Missy Elliott was everywhere you looked. The rapper/producer released a string of offbeat smash hits and landmark music videos in the late 1990s and early 2000s that stretched from her breakthrough single "The Rain" in 1997 to 2001's "Get Ur Freak On" and 2002's "Work It." But after a couple of softer-selling efforts in the mid 2000s, Elliott seemed to fall off the radar.

Now the increasingly reclusive MC has explained why her long-promised comeback album, Block Party, has been so long in coming and where she's been for the past three years. The 39-year-old Grammy winner told People magazine that she's battling the autoimmune disorder Graves' disease. "You live with it for the rest of your life," Elliott said.

Elliott released a statement after the People report went public to tell her side of things: "There have been some inaccuracies reported in regards to my diagnosis with Grave's Disease, so I wanted to clear things up. I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease about three years ago but it really hasn't slowed me down at all. I rocked my performance on VH1 Hip Hop Honors' tribute to Timbaland last year. I've written and produced a bunch of Grammy-nominated, #1 hits for artists like Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jasmine Sullivan. I toured the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. And on top of all that, I'm working on my new album. I feel great. Under my doctor's supervision, I've been off medication for about a year and I'm completely managing the condition through diet and exercise."

Elliott was diagnosed with the disease in 2008, and she's suffered from a litany of effects, including a loss of some motor skills, dizzy spells, lumps in her throat, mood swings, hair loss, a fast heart rate and bulging eyes. She underwent radiation treatment, has been taking medication and said she's now feeling better.

The disease affects the thyroid gland, whose hormones regulate the body's metabolism and affect mood, weight and energy. It causes hyperthyroidism, which produces an excess of the thyroid hormone, causing the symptoms Elliott discussed, as well as anxiety, double vision and muscle weakness. Though the symptoms are uncomfortable, when caught early and treated, long-term health effects can be avoided.

The weakness was so bad, Elliott said, that she nearly crashed her car because she couldn't press down on the brake, and she could hardly even hold a pen in her hand.

"I'm 30 pounds lighter because I've been exercising," said Elliott, who will be the first subject of the upcoming season of VH1's "Behind the Music" biography series on June 29. "My thyroid is functioning, so I haven't had to take medication in about nine months."

Missy Elliott Says She's 'Just Behind The Scenes Right Now'

MC/producer says she's been focusing on artists like Jazmine Sullivan but plans to drop a new single, 'Blow Your Whistle.'

Missy Elliott spent the better part of the late '90s and early 2000s concocting elaborate and often nutty visuals, rocking absolute craziness in those visuals, spitting slick rhymes and cooing breathy vocals. Oh, and she created some of R&B and hip-hop's most memorable hits, from her woozy, bass-heavy 1997 debut track, "The Rain," to the wobbly sass of 2002's "Work It." Factor in chart-topping collabos with everyone from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, and Missy became a one-stop shop for hits.

However, in recent years the inventive MC has retreated from the spotlight, laying low since her jangly 2008 club anthem "Ching-A-Ling." When MTV News recently caught up with the multi-hyphenate star, she said her days in the limelight were numbered and she's turned her focus to nurturing other artists.

"People always be like, 'Where [you] been?' but you gotta remember, I got Jazmine Sullivan out there, I had Monica 'Everything [To Me']," Missy explained on the red carpet for Tao New York's 10th Anniversary Party carpet last week. "I'm always having artists that I'm doing records on so I'm just behind the scenes right now. I did the artist thing, now I'm just writing and producing."

Elliott has been tending to Sullivan, who the MC worked with for years, including producing her 2008 reggae-tinged debut single, "Need U Bad." Elliott said that the Philadelphia songstress is a "beast" and predicts a lengthy career ahead for Sullivan.

"It's been a long time coming but she gon' be around for a long time. She's gon' make people have to step up they singing," Missy beamed. "Jazmine sing from the soul. She sing from a different place. She's not just a singer, she sings from a place where you feel like she been through those things before. And she got a husky voice and we haven't heard that really in R&B in a long time so she [has] a unique voice."

But she's not giving up everything to her protégés. Elliott revealed that although she's primarily staying behind the boards, she plans to drop a "club record" called "Blow Your Whistle," to which she promises fans "gon' be dancing." However, any proper Missy Elliott track needs to be accompanied by an out-of-control visual. Elliott assured fans that her forthcoming single, which will drop "in a minute," won't be any different.

"I gotta figure out this video thing and then we gon' drop it. It's gotta be a whole thing, it's a puzzle for me. It's not just the record, it's about the video too," Elliott said.

She's still tinkering with the concept but she did promise a clip that, for the woman who has donned garbage bags, rhymed in cornfields and swung from chandeliers in her videos, will be quintessentially Missy.

"Something crazy," Elliott smiled. "I'm taking my foot off this time. I don't know. Something crazy though."

Missy Elliott Remembers Aaliyah, Nine Years Later

'I miss her every day,' late singer's collaborator tells MTV News.

It's been nine years since Aaliyah Dana Haughton died in a plane crash and left an immense void in the hearts of her family, friends and fans.

The singer's star was still rising when her life was cut short. She released multiplatinum albums and had just started her film career, but there was always a sense that her journey would be a long one, destined for greatness.

Traces of her style and influence are apparent in contemporary artists, but her legacy is most evident in her collaborators, including Timbaland, Ginuwine and Missy Elliot.

Missy spoke with MTV News via e-mail and shared some of her favorite Aaliyah memories.

MTV: When you look around today at some of the current R&B stars, who do you see traces of Aaliyah's influence in?

Missy Elliott: I think it's hard for Aaliyah to be duplicated, because she had her own lane. But Ciara is an R&B singer who loves to dance, and Aaliyah was that same kinda artist. We knew when she dropped a record, we couldn't wait for the video. I think Aaliyah has influenced artists like a Ciara.

MTV: How do you spend a day like this, where everyone is mourning the anniversary of your friend's passing?

Elliott: I plan to spend my day the same as any other day, because there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of [Aaliyah] or watch a video or play her music. I miss her every day.

MTV: Do you know of any update on the plans for an Aaliyah movie?

Elliott: As far as a movie for Aaliyah, I've been hearing some things but don't know how true they are, and out of respect for her family, I would wait until they announce it. That way we will know it's a fact.

MTV: I'm sure you have so many memories of Aaliyah. What was it like the first time you met her?

Elliott: When me and Tim first went to work with her, we were so nervous. She was such a big star, and I was scared she was gonna be some diva, sipping on tea, with people fixing her hair and nails, and she would say, "What is this music you got! It's wack!" But when we walked in the studio, her smile made the whole room glow! She was like "Heyyyyy!" and gave us big hugs and made us feel like we were her cousins from down South. She was a very sweet spirit! Never seen her angry as long as I've known her, and in this business, that's unheard of!

MTV: What memory do you revisit most when you think about Aaliyah?

Elliott: We've had so many memorable times. My most memorable is when me, her and Tim wore outfits alike! It was burgundy Pony outfits to the awards. Mind you, Aaliyah was petite so her Pony outfit looked so cute on her, but I kept looking at mine during the awards whispering to her saying, "I feel like a big-ass pony for real!" And we laughed and laughed! Too many memories to state them all! If she was still with us, she would still be at the top. Because she always stayed pushing herself to be better.

Lil' Kim Vs. Nicki Minaj: Missy Elliott, Trina, More Weigh In

Lil' Kim's recent harsh comments about up-and-coming femcee Nicki Minaj are nothing new when it comes to hip-hop. The Queen Bee has lashed out against the Young Money Barbie onstage and in interviews, accusing the Lil Wayne protégé of jacking Kim's style without giving proper respect.

From Jay-Z and Nas' years-long iciness to 50 Cent's sharp-edged comments about well, everybody, verbal jabs off and on wax are arguably as much of an element of hip-hop as DJing or breaking. While nearly every high-profile MC has been embroiled in some kind of drama with another rapper, the situation can be more complicated when it involves female hip-hop artists, who have to contend with the relative lack of female colleagues in the game and the pressures of an image-driven industry in addition to delivering lyrical heat. Some of hip-hop's ladies insist that when it comes to Kim and Nicki's recent flap, solidarity should trump ego for women on the mic.

"That's crazy. I really don't get it. I don't see where all this is coming from," Miami's Trina told MTV News via e-mail this week about Kim's comments. "[We're] all ladies. Can't we just make music and get our paper and keep it moving?! We all respect Kim. She opened the doors for us females. It's all good — everybody's eating, what's the issue?" Trina also pointed to the dearth of high-profile women in hip-hop as a reason for Kim to fall back with the criticism. "This makes us all look bad. There's barely any female artists as is — we don't need this!"

Veteran MC Rah Digga also maintained that for women in hip-hop, trading jabs isn't in anyone's best interests. "My advice to Kim is just make her music," Digga told MTV News. "My advice to everybody is just do you: Make your music, don't pay attention to what's going on around you, just do what you do best and let the fans blog it out."

Like Trina and Digga, multiplatinum rapper and producer Missy Elliott has been in the game for years, and she believes there's room for both Nicki's and Kim's outsize talents. "I like Nicki Minaj's music. I think she's hot!!" Missy relayed to MTV News via e-mail, adding, "I've been a fan of Lil Kim from the beginning and always will be. Kim is a rap icon!"

Of course, respect is key, and Southern star Diamond, who burst on the scene with Crime Mob before going solo, maintains that it's important to acknowledge the old guard when first starting out.

"I just feel like people that have paved the way for you, you have to show them some type of homage or some type of respect, to a certain extent," Diamond told MTV News. "That doesn't mean that you have to go around and carry [their] bags. At some certain point you just have to kinda acknowledge the people that paved the way for making things possible for you. I favor Eve more than everybody, but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna shout out Kim in an interview or Foxy [Brown] — I might like something that she did — or Da Brat or Missy. Those women paved the way for us, so it would be kinda weird not to show them some type of attention or expression, just to let them know, 'Hey, I appreciate what you've done for me.' " The small number of female MCs in the game makes unity even more important, several femcees stressed. Trina said she experienced difficulties when she was first breaking in.

"It's a male-dominated game, so the bulk of attention is focused on them," she said. "As a female you are constantly fighting to prove yourself and stay fighting to hold your spot amongst these dudes."

Diamond takes the situation a step further by comparing it to sexual politics in any work environment. "It's [the same as] anything in society: You can be having a 9-to-5 and you can have a boss that's over you that's a male, and you can be doing better than what he's supposed to do and you could get recognition from his boss and he might feel intimidated a certain kind of way," she said. "Men are just so caught up in being dominating, being a man, wearing the pants and just being in control. For a woman to come in and do the same thing that a man has done or that a man is doing, that's when it becomes little problems here and there."

In fact, many female MCs such as Trina, Rah Digga, Kim and Minaj have aligned with male stars like Trick Daddy, Busta Rhymes, Notorious B.I.G. and Lil Wayne when they first hit the scene (Elliott's long association with Timbaland was more of a partnership; Lauryn Hill broke in with the Fugees). Yet not all female MCs have found their gender to be a problem when proving themselves in the game. Digga found that her talent eased her experience when she was first making her mark in hip-hop.

"I traveled the Lyricist Lounge circuit real heavy [before she received mainstream success], so I always was critically acclaimed for being an MC. So I think once I got with Busta Rhymes it was like, 'OK, now we get to hear her live and direct on an album.' I already had the rapport of being a strong MC from the beginning. Once I got with the crew I was just basically able to stand out and shine. It was a real good experience for me."

And while there has been a dearth of female MCs in recent years, Diamond — who was part of Ludacris' de facto ladies anthem "My Chick Bad (Remix)" with Trina and Eve — is excited about a resurgence.

"The fact that females in hip-hop are coming back is good, because a lot of the times men speak for women and men can't really cover every subject and topic that a woman would speak on. I feel like, for some reason, people feel like [there] only has to be one female. Everybody has their own lane. Just like there's different dudes for us to choose between and different genres of music it should be the same for female MCs."

Kim and Nicki's flap isn't the first time two talented stars have taken the spotlight for reasons other than their music, and it certainly won't be the last. Yet while female MCs have always had different pressures than their male counterparts, Digga thinks there is a straightforward way to equalize the playing field.

"I think the best way to command respect is to make music."
