Blixa Bargeld is not a pitchman.

He and his fellow German industrial pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten are currently bringing their experimental mix of machinery and music to venues here in the States. In the past, the group has used chainsaws, rocks, and even human ribs to create its art, so when Bargeld, the group's vocalist/multi-instrumentalist, was asked what fans should expect this time around, he dryly replied,
"Disappointment. I gained a lot of weight. We all look really old. We don't have fire on the stage. The story about the pneumatic drill is a press legend. We never had a pneumatic drill. Nobody's getting hurt. No blood, what else? Actually that's the best, nobody in this band has a tattoo. Nobody.

"I think they can probably disappoint themselves to a maximum by noticing that we are actually soaked in beautiful ideas,"
Bargeld added during his recent interview with MTV News (which you can catch in our MTV
News Online feature of the week starting Friday).
"That we have a very fragile way of playing that has dynamics from being absolutely silent to being incredibly loud, and that we do incredible things with objects that look like they are just harmful or would sound really awful. That we could possibly use them for the exact opposite as well, and they can hear a lot of German lyrics that they're probably not able to understand. I will try my best to make them understandable."

While disappointment may not be what most people consider a positive experience, Bargeld notes that being disappointed can be rather good for you.

"Disappointing... that means readjusting your view of the world, and that is not necessarily something bad. I don't think affirmation could be something good at all. I could affirm somebody's identity, 'This is actually always what I thought,' but you can look at that as disappointing."
[28.8 RealVideo]

If you're in the mood to readjust your view of the world, here's where you can catch Einstürzende Neubauten:

12/17 - Minneapolis, MN @ Quest
12/18 - Milwaukee, WI @ Rave
12/19 - Chicago, IL @ Metro / Smart Bar
12/21 - Detroit, MI @ St. Andrews Hall
12/22 - Toronto @ Guvernment
12/23 - Montreal @ Spectrum
12/26 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
12/27 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
12/28 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
1/1 - Boston, MA @ Axis
1/2 - Philadelphia, PA @ Trocadero
1/3 - Washington, DC @ 9:30

ANAHEIM, California — Creed vocalist Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti will start working nights this week as they resume writing the follow-up to 1999's smash Human Clay.
Refreshed from taking the holidays off, the songwriting duo plans to buckle down four nights a week and pen an album that intensifies the larger-than-life feel of its predecessor.

"It's gonna be more extreme on all extremities — the harder stuff a little harder, the epic stuff a little more epic," Tremonti said Saturday.

Creed plan to spend the next few months writing before heading into the studio in July and hopefully releasing the disc in October or November. Tremonti said the band, which worked with longtime friend and producer John Kurzweg on both My Own Prison (1997) and Human Clay, has not picked a producer for the album.

The spiritual Florida rockers parted ways with bass player and founding member Brian Marshall in August and hired Brett Hestla as their touring bassist. Hestla will be working on an album with his group Virgos while Creed are recording their LP as a trio, but the bands are considering a joint fall tour after both albums hit stores. Hestla said he would play both sets.

Tremonti, Hestla and Creed drummer Scott Phillips attended last weekend's National Association of Music Merchants trade show in Anaheim, where Paul Reed Smith Guitars unveiled Tremonti's new signature model.

Tremonti said he had been working with PRS to design the guitar for about a year. "It's the baddest guitar on the planet. It's a technically perfect, thick, massive-sounding guitar. I think it's the best in the world today."
Creed, who cleaned up at several recent award ceremonies, are up for two Grammys next month. "With Arms Wide Open" is nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Rock Song, the latter of which would go to its songwriters, Tremonti and Stapp.

"A Grammy would be great — I'm just not gonna count on it," Tremonti said. "We've won a lot of awards this year, and I'm happy about 'em. If we don't win a Grammy, we don't win a Grammy. We've got a lot more albums ahead. But we're up for two of them, so we'll keep our fingers crossed."
For much more on Creed, don't forget to check out the MTV News Online feature
Creed: Higher Learning"

Einstürzende Neubauten Revisit Past With Henry Rollins As Tour Looms

German avant-rock pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten will soon forge ahead with their first U.S. tour in six years in support of their latest album, but will also revisit their past with the help of Henry Rollins.

The group (whose use of machinery, rocks, and metal gave rise to the term industrial when Trent Reznor was still in studyhall), will launch a tour in San Fransico next month, but will also see its 1981 debut album "Kollaps" resurface when Henry Rollins reissues it on his Infinite Zero Records. Neubauten vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/founding father Blixa Bargeld told MTV News this week that the label (which specializes in reissues by similarly revered acts like Devo, Gang Of Four, and the Monks) will soon reissue Neubauten's debut with a bonus track that was recorded during the "Kollaps" sessions but was never released.

"I don't know why it didn't make the album the first time,"
Bargeld told MTV News recently.
"I don't know what our criteria was at that time not to use it. I think we probably just thought it's unfinished, but now it just sounds cruel and young and dramatic and matches the rest (of 'Kollaps') very well. It was very bad sound quality, but it's fine." [28.8 RealVideo]

Before the reissue arrives, Einstürzende Neubauten (whose name is German for "collapsing new buildings") will focus on bringing its latest work, "Ende Neu," to U.S. audiences with a brief tour that kicks off on December 9. Here's a few of the dates that the band has lined up already (more may be added soon):

12/9 - San Francisco, CA @ Warfield
12/10 - Hollywood, CA @ Palace
12/12 - Portland, OR @ La Luna
12/13 - Seattle, WA @ Fenix / Fenix Underground
12/15 - Denver, CO @ Ogden Theatre
12/17 - Minneapolis, MN @ Quest
12/18 - Milwaukee, WI @ Rave
12/19 - Chicago, IL @ Metro / Smart Bar
12/22 - Toronto
@ Guvernment
12/23 - Montreal @ Spectrum
12/26 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
12/27 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
12/28 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
12/29 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
1/1 - Boston, MA @ Axis
1/2 - Washington, DC @ 9:30
1/3 - Philadelphia, PA @ TBA
