Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, Eagle-Eye Cherry, and Shania Twain were honored for having penned some of the most-played songs on radio and TV from the past year during the annual presentation of the BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

BMI, the American performing rights organization responsible for licensing out songs to various businesses and media, announced the winners of its 48th annual Pop Awards and Citations of Achievement during a black-tie event staged at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Eagle-Eye Cherry's "Save Tonight," a number-one single from Cherry's debut album, "Desireless," was named the Pop Song Of The Year, while sexy country starlet Shania Twain was named the Pop Songwriter Of The Year for the second straight year.

No less than five Twain tunes received Citations of Achievement for being among the most performed songs in the BMI eligibility period for 2000 -- which ran from October 1, 1998 through September
30, 1999 -- including "From This Moment On," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman," "That Don't Impress Me Much," "You've Got A Way," and "You're Still The One."

Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas trailed Twain with four songwriting Citations, three for singles from his band's last album, 1996's "Yourself Or Someone Like You," and another for co-writing Santana's career rejuvenating hit, "Smooth," with Itaal Shur. MB20 will issue its new album, "Mad Season By Matchbox Twenty," on May 23.

Hip-hop songwriting siblings Fred and Rodney Jerkins also had three of their compositions cited by BMI, including Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine," Jennifer Lopez's "If You Had My Love," and Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay."

The Offspring, who have contributed a new song, "Totalimmortal," to the upcoming "Me, Myself, & Irene" soundtrack, received BMI's award for the Most Performed Song on College Radio, and frontman Dexter Holland was on hand to accept the collegiate-minded
honor.

Of the 121 songwriters and 75 songs receiving BMI's annual Pop Awards and Citations, seventeen artists were multiple winners, as Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, members of Sugar Ray, Sarah McLachlan, and Mariah Carey each placed two songs on BMI's most-performed list.

The complete list of songs, performers, and songwriters honored with BMI Citations of Achievement:

"3 AM" - Matchbox 20 (2nd Award) written by Rob Thomas

"All Star" - Smash Mouth written by Greg Camp

"Almost Doesn't Count" - Brandy written by Shelly Peiken

"Amazed" - Lonestar written by Marv Green, Chris Lindsey, and Aimee Mayo

"American Woman" - Lenny Kravitz written by Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Jim Kale, Garry Peterson

"Angel" - Sarah McLachlan written by Sarah McLachlan

"Anything But Down" - Sheryl Crow written by Sheryl Crow

"Baby, I Need

As Eagle-Eye Cherry's breakthrough hit, "Save Tonight," continues to climb the charts, it also continues to gain a new perspective for its creator.
As his tour marches on in supports of his debut album, "Desireless," Cherry (the son of jazz great Don Cherry and brother of Neneh Cherry) is finding a new meaning in the melodic, bluesy song.
"It's [about] a bittersweet time," Cherry told MTV News, "it's really about the perfect evening, with the candlelight and the wine and the fireplace. And in turn if you have this perfect evening you can probably survive a period of being apart. Savoring the moment, and maybe a miracle will happen and tomorrow won't even come. It's also about one of those nights where you don't want the break of dawn to arrive."
Cherry will stay away from his Stockholm base a bit longer as his U.S. tour stretches into October before he heads off for a European tour that runs through the end of November. Here's where you can catch Eagle Eye in the U.S.:

It's been nine years since singer Neneh Cherry filled the airwaves with her hit, "Buffalo Stance," and since her brother, Eagle-Eye Cherry, tried to expand on the family fame by auditioning to become a VJ here on MTV.
That gig never worked out, but now Eagle-Eye is making some noise here with the Buzz-worthy clip for his new single, "Save Tonight," [1.2MB QuickTime] from his debut album, "Desire-less."
MTV News caught up with the newest Cherry to crash the music scene, and talked with him about his memories of the audition process.
"Yeah, I came over here and did an audition for [MTV]," Cherry said, "and it was funny 'cause I had a friend of mine come in and be the guy I interviewed. He talked about this fake band that he had and this whole concept where the band had this god and all this really flipped-out stuff." [1MB QuickTime]

"Some of the guys in the studio actually thought it was a real band," he added, "so after the interview they said, 'Hey, good luck with your band, and he was like 'uh-huh.'"
The title of Eagle-Eye's new album, "Desire-less," pays tribute to his family's musical lineage by taking its name from a composition by his father, the late jazz star Don Cherry.
Eagle-Eye will play the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., on September 17, and the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on October 2 before he heads overseas for a fall European tour.
