Janet Jackson is known almost as much for her private nature as she is for her signature dance moves and decades of pop hits. But in a rare interview with ABC News that aired on Wednesday night, the day after her Number Ones album came out, the singer sat down with Robin Roberts to discuss her feelings about brother Michael Jackson's death, her breakup with Jermaine Dupri and how she's trying to gain more control over her sometimes chaotic life.

"That was a shocker to me," Janet said of when she first learned that her brother had been using the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol — the drug that was found in lethal doses in his system after his death — as a sleep aid. "It just ... that's serious ... that's heavy ... that's heavy."

In one segment, Jackson walked around her palatial Los Angeles home, filled with photos of her famous family, and showed Roberts the last picture she has of Michael, taken two days before her birthday earlier this year. In the photo, a sad-looking MJ is seated on a couch with his two sons. Janet said the thing she misses the most about the sibling she called "Mike" is his "silliness," recalling how as children they spent all their time together playing and laughing.

Janet recounted the morning of Jackson's death on June 25, recalling how her assistant called her to relay the news that Michael had been taken to the hospital and how she didn't go immediately to the airport in New York because the severity of the situation was not apparent. "I tried calling again, and that's how I found out that he was ... no longer," she said, trailing off. "I just couldn't believe it. It didn't ring true to me. It felt like a dream. ... To this day, it's still so difficult for me to believe. You have to accept what is, but it's hard."

Talking for the first time about her warm embrace of Michael's daughter, Paris, when the 11-year-old gave her tearful goodbye to her father at his public memorial, Janet said she just wanted to scoop up and protect her niece at that moment. "All of them, not just her, Blanket, Prince. ... It's just tragic. It's hard for everybody. I think we've been doing well. I have a very strong family."

In one of the lighter segments, Janet recalled sitting in her pajamas as a young girl and watching her brothers on their early 1970s Saturday-morning cartoon before she became a performer. She gave Michael credit for helping her to hone a signature sassy performance style as a young girl when she debuted on their variety show at age 7. She also referred to domineering father Joseph Jackson as "old school" in response to a question about allegations by some of her brothers that he abused them, saying his overbearing manner "may extrapolate into being a little abusive."

Janet, 43, said she didn't celebrate a birthday until she was 23 because of her family's Jehovah's Witness beliefs. She noted that her once-promising acting career, stoked by strong roles on "Good Times" and "Diff'rent Strokes," was derailed because her father insisted she focus on music. She also said that her marriage to singer James DeBarge at age 18 was an attempt to break away from her family. That union ended after just three months due to DeBarge's drug addiction, which was eerily similar to the prescription-medication demons Michael faced, an addiction Janet said she believes her brother was in denial about.

Jackson discussed the many attempts at an intervention with Michael that failed. "That's what you do," she told Roberts in the same interview in which she blamed Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, for the singer's death. "Those are the things that you do when you love someone. You can't just let them continue on that way. And we did a few times. We weren't very successful."

Jackson said she doesn't think Murray, whom she's never met, should be practicing medicine anymore. "So this could happen to another family?" she said. "No."

For the first time, Jackson confirmed that she is no longer dating longtime beau Jermaine Dupri. She also talked about how the effects of being teased about her weight as a child have caused her to be conscious about her weight for her entire adult life. "There are people that regardless of what it is, if it's something that's stressful, whatever it may be, they don't eat, they lose a lot of weight, a divorce, they get real thin," she said laughing. "I'm the opposite." But she credited JD for making her feel "very comfortable" with her body and making her feel that "I'm fine the way I am. There's nothing wrong with me."

For Mariah Carey's forthcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,
she tried to mix up her collaborators, working not only with some familiar faces, but also one superproducer she hadn't had the opportunity to work with in the past.

"I worked with Timbaland for the first time," Carey told MTV News recently. "I'm a fan of Timbaland's, so I enjoyed it. [The song] hasn't even been mixed yet but I think it's really cool."

For the album, due in September, Carey also worked with artist/producer The-Dream on her controversial single, "Obsessed," as well as longtime collaborator Big Jim Wright.

"I worked with Big Jim Wright, who works with Sounds of Blackness a lot, and so there's live-feeling songs on the album," she explained. "A lot of my fans, since I've been twittering, a lot of the fans are like, 'We want some live-sounding stuff,' so you have to find that middle ground."

But unsurprisingly, working with Jermaine Dupri seems to hold a special place in Carey's heart. The pair have created many hits together, including "We Belong Together" and "Sweetheart."

"I worked with JD again," she said. "I always love working with Jermaine. Every time it's just ... it reminds me of the first time we worked together, which was 'Always Be My Baby.' Once you do a song like that and you have it forever, you wanna just continue to try and re-create that magic, so that's what we do."

We love Bow Wow, but we gotta be real: The Game utterly destroyed him last September when the two ended weeks of back-and-forth of Internet trash-talking and faced off in a game of "John Madden" — in front of a live crowd. The Game's team of the Patriots destroyed B-Dub's squad of choice 55-23.

During the matchup, Jermaine Dupri came to the showdown to help cheer and coach Bow, but to no avail.

"I'm the sh--, man!" Game declared after the game. "I don't know what else to say. Shout-out to Jermaine Dupri for coming to pick up his little pup. ... John Madden, I love you, man."

Well it looks like JD may soon have the chance to avenge his fallen homie: The Game says he wants to get Dupri on the battlefield in a sports game of his choice.

"They be running from me, man," Game complained about some his celebrity friends who haven't stepped up to play him in sports videogames. "[Dwayne] D. Wade, Twista, Jadakiss, Bow Wow. Them n---as be running from me. All the video game heads. JD, I don't know, he don't want it. They just be running. But they know what's up with me!"

MTV News reached out to Jermaine this afternoon to see if he would accept Game's challenge, and the ATL hitmaker was all too willing to compete.

"You can't be serious?" JD said in a statement meant for Game. "You can meet me online. I'm there every other night: NBA2K baby! If you are serious, hit me up and I will give you my gamer tag."

Seems like it is on! The Game wanted us to leave his Gamer tag as well for any entertainers of regular folk who want it with him.

" 'G-A-M-E' is my tag and the other one is 'S-O-O-W-O-O'" he said. "Let them n---as know — that's me online."

Away from games, The Compton MC is working on his new LP, the R.E.D. Album as well as a slew of mixtapes. Jermaine Dupri has put together a clique called Oceans 7 which includes Nelly, Usher and Trey Songz. The collective are putting out a mixtape on Dupri's new Web site, www.global14.com.

Bow Wow Says His Saga With Jermaine Dupri Mirrors 'New Jack City'

He named his album New Jack City II because the friendship in the movie is 'similar to me and JD's situation.'
By Steven Roberts

When Bow Wow decided to name his new album New Jack City II, the title was met with a few raised eyebrows. While he's dropped the "Lil' " from his name, some people weren't ready to hear Bow Wow rapping about the 1991 movie's subject matter: the influence of crack cocaine in inner-city communities.

But Bow Wow insists he's not going there.

"It has nothing to do with the action they were doing in the movie," Bow said. "It has nothing to do with drugs or me trying to be hard or get that certification. ... The reason why I named the album that is just based on the brotherhood and the friendship of ['New Jack City' characters] G-Money and Nino Brown — the friendship and how it's similar to me and JD's situation."

Bow compared his and Jermaine Dupri's success at So So Def to that of "the Carter" in the movie. The Carter was an apartment complex in the movie that Brown, played by Wesley Snipes, and his gang transformed into a crack house. He said the two were able to feed their friends and family, just like him and Dupri.

Brown eventually kills his best friend G-Money, played by Allen Payne, and Bow said that he and Dupri let business come between them as well. "We had our ups and downs, we had our arguments, our disagreements, but it's normal, it's pretty much normal," said Bow.

The MC compared it to when a teenager thinks he's ready to make his own decisions and ends up bumping his head and coming back home, humbled. "It just came to that point," Bow explained. "I went out there and bumped my head, and my third album [Unleashed] didn't do as good as the other ones."

New Jack City II, which dropped Tuesday (March 31), is a continuation of the film, Bow said. If Nino Brown hadn't killed G-Money, the two would have continued to make money. "[Unleashed] sold 800,000 records, but it wasn't a million. It wasn't 3 million like my first one, and it wasn't 2 million like my second. So I learned from that. Got back with JD, and the next two albums sold over a million records, so you know, it shows."

Bow also said he wasn't worried about the fact that this is his first album with a Parental Advisory label. "When I first came out, my fans were my age," Bow said. "My fans now are probably 21, 22 years old."

Lil Wayne, T.I. and Swizz Beatz are all featured on the album, which was another reason for the Parental Advisory. "I really did that for them, 'cause I didn't want to hold them back from being the artists that they are and for what y'all like them for and respect them for," he said. "So I let them get on my album and do what it is that they do."

Atlanta Week without Jermaine Dupri just couldn't happen. That's like having the NCAA Tournament without the North Carolina Tar Heels. JD has practically become a human institution. Just think about it: He was multiplatinum in 1992 and almost 20 years later, his M.O. hasn't changed. He's still working on albums that exceed 1 million in record sales.

For most of the past two decades, when JD hasn't had one of his productions on the radio killing the airwaves with spins, it's because he was in the studio working on at least five different hits, with Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Da Brat, the Notorious B.I.G., Bow Wow, even Chingy. Dupri has always been able to make smashes with people from all regions and still rep his city big time with local talent like Jagged Edge, Usher and Xscape. JD has seen it all, and he's still standing. His love of music is vast and unwavering. Here, the veteran Grammy winner lists 10 albums that define Atlanta, in alphabetical order.

ATLANTA — The hottest place in ATL on Sunday nights has to be the Velvet Room.

You're bound to see a superstar — from Jay-Z to R. Kelly to T.I. — there during any given week. They say the capacity is 3,500 people, but anyone on the dance floor will feel like there are probably three times as many people in the building. It's so packed you can barely move, but nobody seems to care. The music is banging, the drinks are flowing and everybody came out the house looking fly.

Picture it: A cross-section of hip-hop kings from all over the country. Hometown hero Young Jeezy and his Corporate Thugz Entertainment crew. Fat Joe, Diamond D and DJ Khaled and their entourage. Playaz Circle were in the house. Singer Trey Songz was there, as was Fonzworth Bentley, DJ Drama, DJ Don Cannon, Rich Boy and Jim Jones and his Goonies.

Clearly, a regular night won't bring all these guys out. So is it a concert? Nope. Afterparty for an awards show? Nah. They all came to help DJ Infamous celebrate his fourth year of spinning on the radio.

"Infamous, happy anniversary," Def Jam South President DJ Khaled screamed. "Def Jam had to come rep Infamous real quick. We in ATL. Velvet Room. It's going down. Let's get it."

"A-Town gets in," DJ Drama said. "You can go anywhere in the world, and you're not gonna see all this star power in one room."

"DJ Infamous, that's my brother right there," Fat Joe said. "I had to come out for him. He's one of the hottest DJs in Atlanta. I respect him big time."

"Let me tell you, Sunday night in the Velvet Room ... it was crazy, man," Inf, a.k.a. "the youngest in charge," said as he drove to downtown Atlanta two days after his party. "It was basically special for me. Being professionally on the radio for four years and that many people come show me love like that. These are cats that's been in the game for years. They didn't just show up, they came down and performed. It makes me feel good. These are real cats, man."

Infamous seems destined to follow in the footsteps of DJ Drama (a Philadelphia transplant) as the next big spinner to come from ATL. The 26-year-old got his career going five years ago, going to school in Alabama in the day and spinning on the radio and clubs out there in his free time. He felt he couldn't get any bigger in such a small market, so he moved to Atlanta. He was commuting to ATL on the weekends anyway, because one of his friends, Botchey, was a club promoter and got him work at the clubs in A-Town.

Infamous soon started interning at radio station V-103 and ended up on the airwaves as he increased his profile in clubs like Vision, 112 and South Beach.

"I was probably in Atlanta seven months, and within seven months I was on the radio heavy," he said. "I was in the biggest clubs, doing Young Jeezy's album-release party and other big functions. ... It just took off. That's how I got the whole 'youngest in charge' name. Here, it's unheard of for a dude that young to come here and start getting clubs and radio like that. I just kept it moving."

Along the way, Infamous briefly joined DJ Drama's Aphilliate family and had a long stint at Jermaine Dupri's Club 72. Infamous' biggest outlet, however, might be his offerings on the mixtape circuit. In just a few months, he's put out CDs with Rick Ross, Bow Wow and Young Jeezy.

"I didn't take it seriously until Jeezy called me and said, 'I want you to do this Prime Minister mixtape.' When he called me for that, I saw the outcome of it. I said, 'I need to put some mixtapes out.' It was 150,000 downloads on ThisIs50.com the first day and 160,000 downloads on USDA2day.com. That's what sparked it off. I was like, 'Now people in other areas know who I am. People in New York know me. People in Cali know me.' After that, I had the wave."

Infamous' next mixtape is Risky Business with Jim Jones. You can find out more about that project in this week's Mixtape Monday.

Janet Jackson is having a rough time of it. She split with her second major label in less than three years after her latest album, Discipline, failed to catch fire. Her 2008 Rock Witchu Tour was plagued by postponed and canceled dates due to an illness that was later described as severe vertigo.

And now the singer has been forced to postpone her upcoming tour of Japan due to the global financial crisis. According to BBC News, Japanese concert promoter Kyodo Yokohama announced on Monday that Jackson would be postponing the five dates the singer had scheduled in Japan between February 14 and February 22 "due to the impact of [the] economic crisis."

Jackson, 42, had planned to hit such major Japanese cities as Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka on the world Rock Witchu outing, which was her first major tour in nearly seven years. According to reports, the tour will be rescheduled for later this year with new dates expected to be announced in March.

The announcement comes on the heels of the recent news that Jackson's longtime boyfriend, rapper/producer Jermaine Dupri, has left his position as the head of Island Def Jam Records' urban music department after what he described as a troubled relationship with label boss L.A. Reid. In an interview with Essence.com, Dupri blamed his departure on the "stagnant" atmosphere at the label, where he felt stymied from putting out new releases on the rapid schedule he is used to.

Dupri also claimed in the interview that Reid was jealous of him because he felt the younger producer was more in tune with what's going on "in the streets, the Internet and all over the place."

Jermaine Dupri and Island Def Jam Records parted ways last week, and like with most high-profile breakups, plenty of people want to know what happened.

Was Dupri fired from his post as president of Island Records Urban Music department? Did the So So Def top dog leave in a huff because girlfriend Janet Jackson left her deal with Island last September after disappointing album sales?

Well, Dupri isn't offering specifics. But the super producer is pointing fingers. In an interview with Essence.com on Monday, Dupri slammed IDJ head L.A. Reid and claimed executives at the label were unwilling to release his music.

"It was a situation where it felt very stagnant to me," Dupri told the site. "As a person who is used to putting out new records and continuing to do that, it just wasn't turning over as being that place to me where I should stick to it and see if it was going to turn around."

Dupri listed a number of acts he brought to the label — including singer-songwriter Johnta Austin, Internet star Dondria and rapper Ninth Ward — who remained shelved. The producer said he's been creating music consistently, but there's been resistance by the label to push forward with the finished product.

The New York Post reported last week that Dupri was allegedly relieved of his duties after sulking when Janet Jackson's Discipline — which Dupri executive-produced — and her Rock Witchu Tour failed to meet the label's expectations.

"He still collected a paycheck, but didn't bother to do anything that he was supposed to do, like find artists, release records or actually show up," an anonymous source told the Post. "Executives tried to talk to him, but he just lost heart."

Dupri, however, dismissed those notions saying the label would say anything to place the company in a more positive light.

"They are not going to tell the truth and say, 'He just stopped dealing with us on a daily basis,' " Dupri told Essence. "If you don't put out my records, that's all I have as a person. I'm a record person, so if I give you a record, and you don't put it out, then basically you're showing me that it's really no business."

Dupri directed his harshest barb at Reid, saying the longtime music mogul was jealous of him.

"I'm dealing with a lot of jealousy and have been since I first came in the business," Dupri said. "When you're younger, they don't want to listen to you because they know you are keener and people listen to the younger person in the office. In corporate America, this is something that I started feeling a lot. I'm keener as to what is going on in the streets, the Internet and all over the place. In a room full of people, I'll have more answers than anyone else, because I'm out there and know what's going on, so people start paying more attention to what you're doing."

JD said he hasn't spoken to Reid in three months, and he wasn't sure if his split with the company could be described as amicable.

"I don't know," Dupri said. "I saw a side of [Reid] that I had never seen before, and that to me was a jealous side. I don't know if I should be around people who are jealous of me. Mariah Carey sold more records in that entire Def Jam building, and all of that was through my singles; so I'm looking like the golden boy. I only started thinking about it after I left."

As the country edges toward near-historic unemployment numbers, you can add one more name to the list of those looking for a new job: Jermaine Dupri.

Rumored for months, the split is said to have taken place on Thursday and follows the departure of Dupri's longtime girlfriend, Janet Jackson, from the label. Jackson broke ties with Island Def Jam in late 2008, after her latest album, Discipline, posted disappointing sales of less than 500,000.

Dupri took over the Urban department at IDJ in February of 2007; the division was created shortly before he came onboard. Among the major initiatives under his watch was the creation in April of Tag Records, a joint venture with Procter & Gamble's Tag body spray that helped cross-promote acts like Q Da Kid in Tag advertisements. It was not known at press time how Dupri's exodus would effect his So So Def roster, which has been distributed through Island Urban since 2007.

In addition to Jackson's underperforming album, several other records Dupri oversaw during his time at IDJ failed to catch fire, including Jagged Edge's Baby Makin' Project.

Jermaine Dupri wants to clear up some misconceptions. The biggest one is yet another report that his long-time girlfriend is pregnant: Not true, he says.

The second is that the couple has broken up: again, not true.

Dupri took the unusual move of publicly denying these two rumors — the first of which started when Life & Style magazine recently ran a cover story whose headline read "Janet Jackson Tells Friends: Yes, I'm "Pregnant!" — by blogging about them on Thursday.

"As you all know Janet is a very private person. The only reason you see her as much as you do on my YouTube vlog is because of me LOL," Dupri wrote. 'But I hear y'all and your questions. So here you have it ... No, she is not pregnant and yes, we're still together. It baffles me how y'all let these blogs and magazines control your lifes [sic]. That's why I created global14.com, so when ever hear sh-- about me you can come right here and get the truth."

While rumors about the couple's reported splits have bubbled up repeatedly over the years, the whispers about Jackson's alleged pregnancy intensified in October when Jackson postponed a number of dates on her Rock Witchu Tour. Some of the dates were later made up, with Jackson's doctors saying they recommended she take time off to deal with a bout of migrane-associated vertigo.
