Valentine's Day — you either love it or hate it. It makes sweethearts swoon and others want to stab fat cherubs with a bow and arrow. Between the chocolate hearts, the red roses and the teddy bears shoved in our faces, the holiday stirs up a cocktail of emotions: happiness, despair, jealousy, grief, sadness, desire ...

HOLLYWOOD — James Blunt is just beginning to make his mark in the U.S., but he's already won over the slew of Hollywood stars, musicians and die-hard fans that swarmed the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip late Tuesday night to get a taste of the British import's heartwarming goods.

Devotees lined up for blocks along the Strip, ready to whip out those lighters and shed a tear or two during Blunt's sold-out concert, which marked the first time the performer had his four-piece live band in tow (he went acoustic for his stint opening for Jason Mraz).

An eclectic array of celebs — including Mraz, Matthew Perry, Shakira, the Donnas, model Petra Nemcova and the Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger — all came out to show their support for Blunt, and a white banner posted high above the venue reading "Blunt [Heart] L.A.," showed that the good feelings were mutual.

Producer Linda Perry, who first heard Blunt at the South by Southwest music festival nearly three years ago, made a rare appearance to show her support to the former-British-Army-officer-turned-international-star who has pushed more than 2.4 million albums worldwide (see "James Blunt Finally Getting Love From Americans — But Not Mischa Barton"). Perry signed Blunt to her Atlantic Records imprint, Custard, and she's already expecting the bloke to walk away with a handful of Grammys next year.

"I predict James will be nominated for three awards. He'll win two," the woman behind Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" and Pink's "Get the Party Started" said with conviction. "I'm not saying which ones, but he'll take some home. Mark my words."

Blunt kicked off his hour-and-a-half set with "Billy," a track the singer wrote about a son forced to leave home. He segued into his hit U.K. single "High," drawing screams of approval from the crowd.

The crooner sat at the piano to belt out the crushing "Goodbye, My Lover," and his haunting vocals even cracked a bit during the tune.

"And they just get more miserable from there," Blunt deadpanned. "I know you all came here to have a good time tonight, so that's why I'm playing so many [unhappy] songs."

The singer balanced out the melancholy mood by throwing out quick quips to the crowd during the show. Blunt even high-fived a couple of lucky audience members as he weaved his way through the rest of Bedlam's tracks, including "So Long Jimmy" and "No Bravery," a distressing tune about destruction and despair in Kosovo (which Blunt saw firsthand when he served as a NATO peacekeeper in the war-torn region). He wrapped up the show with an early-morning performance of his signature hit, "You're Beautiful."

If you couldn't make it to the pre-Grammy gig, you'll get another chance to see Blunt live next month. The singer kicks off the U.S. portion of a worldwide tour on March 13 in Washington, D.C.

Maroon 5, Donnas, Phantom Planet To Head Out On Tour

With Phantom Planet, the Thrills and the Donnas as their co-pilots, Maroon 5 will hit the road for two months on the fifth annual 2005 Honda Civic Tour.

Maroon 5 will headline the trek, which begins March 11 in Universal City, California.

"This is the first headlining U.S. tour we've done in a long time," bassist Mickey Madden said Thursday at a press conference in West Hollywood, California, announcing the outing. "We're playing some of the biggest places we've ever played, which is very exciting. And we're taking out some bands that we really like and who are good friends. We grew up with Phantom Planet here in L.A. The Donnas add a nice variety. And the Thrills are a band we really like. Our crowds tend to be receptive to who we take out."

As has been the case with Civic Tours in the past, which have featured such bands as Blink-182, Incubus, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Everclear and Dashboard Confessional, Maroon 5 will be accompanied on the tour by a car they designed. The band has chosen special custom features for the environmentally friendly Honda Civic Hybrid and Honda Civic Coupe, which will be showcased at each venue. Fans will also have the opportunity to win the customized cars.

Emphasizing their commitment to environmental protection, Maroon 5 designed a Web site as part of their participation in the tour, packed with information on how fans can help conserve the planet's natural resources ("Did you know you can run a TV set for three hours with the energy saved from recycling one aluminum can!"). They also provide links to various environmental organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Tickets go on sale beginning February 5, though fans can log on to the tour's Web site for special pre-sale information.

The trek will delay Maroon 5's follow-up to Songs About Jane, which the band will now record after the outing is wrapped. "We're extremely anxious to get back in the studio," Madden said. "We have a lot of songs written that are unfinished, but it's hard to write on the road" (see "Maroon 5 Dying To Get Back In The Studio To Record More Songs About Girls").

In the meantime, Maroon 5 are looking for an outlet for Kanye West's remix of "This Love."

"It's got a '70s soul, gospel sort of vibe," Madden said. "It's out there to be found now on the Internet. We're not sure how to release it exactly. It's a remix, but it's not a hip-hop remix, so it couldn't have a place on hip-hop radio."

'Tis the season for giving. But what do you give to the music fan who already has everything? Gift certificates are lame, and that reindeer sweater just won't cut it. To help you find that perfect present, here's a list of some gift ideas, guaranteed to please even the most die-hard music-phile. It's proof that not all band merchandise has to fall into one of three categories: patches, pins and panties.

(Click for photos of holiday gift ideas for fans.)

Britney Spears yoga pants
$12.95, BritneySpears.com
The perfect gift for the Britney fanatic who's already got the "Baby One More Time"-era Catholic school girl outfit, the "Oops I Did It Again" patent-leather spacesuit and the "Toxic"-inspired futuristic stewardess get-up. In these "very comfy" yoga pants (emblazoned with the logo from the ill-fated Onyx Hotel Tour) you'll be emulating Britney's newly "spiritual" life in no time. Dancer/husband not included.

New Found Glory necklace
$10, NewFoundGlory.com
What do you get when that special someone loves pop-punk more than he or she loves you? How about winning their heart with this extra-classy silver necklace, available for a limited time on NFG's official Web site.

Good Charlotte's Made flip-flops
$8, MadeClothing.com
Neither Joel nor Benji Madden has attended college, but somewhere along the way they learned the most important lesson of dorm life: Always wear flip-flops in the shower. So they've designed these kelly-green beauties to help keep your feet fungus-free. Not surprisingly, the flip-flops are "non returnable," because no one wants to walk around in some dude's old shower shoes.

Slim Shady bobblehead
$15, MusicToday.com
If you're one of those people who wishes that Eminem would just keep his mouth shut, then this is the gift for you: You'll hear nary a peep from this bobblehead Em. And if you're one of those people who wishes that Eminem was just a seven-and-a-half-inch tall figurine with an oversized cranium that wobbles gently in the breeze, well, look no further ...

Sum 41 necktie
$17.99, BandMerch.com
Going on a job interview? What better way to impress your potential employers than by wearing a tie decorated with falling bombs? In no time at all, you'll be the coolest junior account manager in the firm.

Donnas shoelaces
$8.95, BandMerch.com
It's a little-known fact that the Donnas are huge fans of two things: rocking hard and tying their shoes. Now you can emulate all that rocking and double-knotting with your very own pair of Donnas shoelaces.. Bet you regret buying those Velcro shoes now!

Linkin Park belly barbells
$15.95, LinkinParkMerch.com
Are you a girl? Between the ages of, say, 13-18? And do you like Linkin Park? Then this is the perfect gift for you. Accessorize your navel with the band's album, available in three cool colors: red to symbolize the anger of Mike Shinoda's rhymes, blue to symbolize the melancholy of Chester Bennington's lyrics, and silver, to symbolize ... um, something about Joseph Hahn.

Personalized pimp cups
$14.95-$49.95, IcedOutGear.com
A great gift for anyone who's ballin' on a budget, a personalized pimp cup is the perfect way to party like Lil Jon, without spending big-time cash. Carry your Crunk Juice in one of several smooth designs — like the "Don Juan," the "Cashville" or the fearsome "Beg for Mercy" — because no self-respecting pimp would be caught dead chugging Hennessey out of a paper cup.

Paris Hilton has been the brunt of many jokes, but now she's getting the "South Park" treatment on Wednesday's (December 1) episode, when all the fourth-grade girls idolize a certain blonde celebrity, known for her jet-set lifestyle, television show and extracurricular activities. They play with her new toy set that comes complete with a video camera and night-vision filter, and try to pursue the boys to make their own videos — until "Paris" arrives to offer some competition.

The Diplomats' newest member came out onstage Tuesday night as the Harlem-based trio of Cam'ron, Juelz Santana and Jim Jones rocked the stage at their hometown's landmark Apollo Theater for a Roc-A-Fella pay-per-view special. The new member? Juelz's adorable nephew, 5-year-old "Young Ja". You could hear all the ladies saying, "He's so cute." He's also a smart businessboy: After he performed the choruses to the records "Shake" and his uncle's "S.A.N.T.A.N.A.," he told Cam he couldn't stay onstage all night because he had to go to school the next morning. The youngster didn't leave, however, until Killa handed over a huge wad of cash (it wasn't staged, according to Juelz) for services rendered. Memphis Bleek and Peedi Crakk also performed at the show. ... Jay-Z's team beat Nelly's team Tuesday night. Franz Ferdinand enlisted the help of bassist Dino from their supporting act the Beat Up for the Sunday show. Though Hardy performed at the band's Monday night concert in Tokyo, he is returning to the hospital, where he will remain until Thursday, when he flies to New York to join the band for its U.S. tour.

The results are in from the other election — the one determined not by paper, electronic or provisional ballots but by record sales — and R. Kelly and Jay-Z are the new leaders of the pop nation.

The super duo's Unfinished Business, a re-visitation of Jay and Kelly's collaboration that yielded 2002's Best of Both Worlds, will take the top slot on next week's Billboard albums chart by selling more than 215,000 copies, according to SoundScan. The album was released to support the pair's co-headlining Best of Both Worlds tour, which crashed acrimoniously last weekend (see "R. Kelly Sues Jay-Z For $75 Million, Claims Sabotage").

Elsewhere, celebratory bells are ringing for Trick Daddy, who logged his best first week ever with Thug Matrimony: Married to the Streets. With a rocking Ozzy Osbourne-sampling single, "Let's Go," the Miami rapper's follow-up to 2002's Thug Holiday, his previous best, sold more than 145,000 copies to assume the #2 position.

Simple Plan's continued inability to "get any" has nonetheless earned the Canadian quintet some sympathetic record sales. Their second album, Still Not Getting Any ..., sold more than 139,000 copies for a #3 debut.

A former Doobie Brother's second album of Motown hits, Michael McDonald's Motown Two, will bow at the #9 spot by selling more than 69,000 copies, while the success and praise of the Ray Charles biopic "Ray" helped the soundtrack jump up 13 spots to #10 in its second week on the chart, with more than 55,000 copies sold.

Rounding out next week's top 10 will be last week's top album, Rod Stewart's Stardust ... The Great American Songbook Vol. 3, which will fall to #4 (with more than 134,000 copies sold); Nelly's Suit dropping three spots to #5 (130,000); Usher's Confessions slipping two places to #6 (113,000); and George Strait's 50 Number Ones falling four notches to #8 (103,000).

The Donnas, who sold nearly 400,000 copies of their last album, 2002's Spend the Night, will re-emerge on the chart at a disappointing #76 by selling just over 13,000 copies of their new album, Gold Medal.

Other notable debuts on next week's chart include Wu-Tang Clan's Legend of the Wu-Tang: Wu-Tang Clan's Greatest Hits at #72; Willie Nelson's It Always Will Be at #75; Jacki-O's Poe Little Rich Girl at #95; Music From the O.C.: Mix 2 at #104; Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' double album, Abattoir Blues/ Lyre of Orpheus, at #126; and the remastered reissue of Pavement's 1994 breakthrough, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, at #164.

Jay-Z's Jinx And The Curse Of R. Kelly

Despite the #1 debuts of Unfinished Business and R. Kelly and Jay-Z's last collaboration, The Best of Both Worlds, it seems fate doesn't want the two chart-toppers to work together.

Just after The Best of Both Worlds was released in 2002, R. Kelly was hit with multiple counts of child pornography and Jay-Z refused to promote the album. Consequently, the LP fell out of the top 20 in its sixth week, the kind of sudden drop to which neither artist is accustomed. The album went on to quietly sell just 363,000 copies, less than any album that either artist has released individually.

Two and a half years later, disaster struck again. Just days after their second collaboration dropped, the superstars' co-headlining tour fell apart and R. Kelly filed a $75 million lawsuit against Jay. The fallout combined with the coincidence that both albums' first-week sales are nearly identical (a difference of only 8,000 copies) perhaps doesn't bode well for the future of Unfinished Business.

On The Move

With the hype surrounding Monday's Country Music Association Awards reaching an apex and a tour with Big & Rich set to take off Friday, Gretchen Wilson's Here for the Party has cracked the 2 million mark, as it moves up four spots to #21 with a 14 percent increase in sales. But the week's biggest jump was made by that weirdest of new-age classical composers, Mannheim Steamroller. Halloween helped scare up sales for the Steamroller's Halloween: Monster Mix, which will catapult from #144 to #65.

Biggest sliders this week are Jimmy Eat World's Futures and Brooks & Dunn's The Greatest Hits Collection II, which both took a 59 percent dip in sales. In their second week on sale, Futures falls from #6 to #19, while the country hits set sinks from #7 to #26.

Jay-Z and R. Kelly released a collaborative album in 2002 and kicked off a joint tour in late September, but having found they still had some unfinished business to take care of, the duo decided to release another album.

Jay and Kelly's follow-up to 2002's Best of Both Worlds, the aptly titled Unfinished Business, features 11 previously unreleased tracks, led by a pair of singles titled "Big Chips" and "Don't Let Me Die."

Pop-punks Simple Plan have been busy as well, so busy in fact that they are Still Not Getting Any ... The band's sophomore album features a heavier sound than the group's first, and finds the Canadians mostly sticking with their characteristic up-tempo beats but adding more downtrodden lyrics.

The Donnas, who have yet to make any reference to a lack of action on any of their albums, release their sixth album, Gold Medal, this week. Like Simple Plan, their music gets a bit of a maturity makeover. Unlike Simple Plan, the Donnas attribute that growth to finding a few good men worth keeping around.

After releasing what was essentially a live greatest-hits album, Disciples of the 36 Chambers, in late September, Wu-Tang Clan will now release a disc of greatest hits previously recorded in the studio. Legend of the Wu-Tang: Wu-Tang Clan's Greatest Hits, which includes tracks like "C.R.E.A.M." and "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit," hits stores this week.

Shifting from Shaolin to Orange County, the second and third volumes of the soundtrack to FOX's show "The O.C." are being released.
Simple Plan, Donnas Catch It On The Flip Side With Two-Sided CD

As the vinyl format increasingly becomes obsolete and the term "B-side" fades into a quaint anachronism, new albums by Simple Plan and the Donnas will soon return literal meaning to the term "flip side."

Simple Plan's Still Not Getting Any... and the Donnas' Gold Medal are the first albums to be issued in the new DualDisc format. One side of the conventional-looking compact disc contains the album's music, while the other includes features such as music videos, photo galleries, Web links, lyrics and other extras, as well as the album in enhanced sound (i.e. 5.1 Surround Sound, DVD-Audio and/or LPCM stereo).

The DVD component of Simple Plan's second album, set for release October 26, allows fans to watch a 20-minute "making of the album" vignette, view an assortment of photos and read the lyrics. The Donnas, whose seventh album, Gold Medal, is also released that same day, treats listeners to the music video for their single "Fall Behind Me," a making-the-video segment, and lyrics (see "The Donnas Take Charge With Gold Medal "). Both DualDisc albums will not be priced any higher than conventional albums.

Forthcoming DualDisc releases include Five for Fighting's new album, The Battle for Everything, on October 26 and reissues of the Grateful Dead's 1970 classic American Beauty (November 9) and Trapt's 2002 self-titled debut (November 16).

Besides the DualDisc component, Simple Plan are giving their fans even more to look forward to on their new album: Still Not Getting Any ... will be issued with three different cover images. While the first features the bandmembers as they appear today, sitting in the back of a bus, the other covers look far into the future. On one, they're in their 40s, living a peaceful existence in suburbia; the other one shows them gathered in front of a retirement home, replete with walkers, gray beards, oxygen tanks and wheelchairs. The two faux-aged covers will only be available for a limited time.

The jokey covers belie the decidedly more serious themes explored therein, but that doesn't mean the guys have gotten poker-faced about everything (see "Simple Plan Less Simple On Second Album").

"I think it sucks when bands take themselves too seriously, and everything about them — from the videos to the album art — is very cool and serious," said Simple Plan drummer Chuck Comeau. "We don't care. We can still have some fun."

The Donnas are notorious for penning raucous songs about getting respect from obnoxious boys and flipping off snobby girls. But with their newest album, the rebellious foursome has channeled that attitude into control over its sound and image.

For starters, the girls have shrugged off their matching names. (Previously, each member had gone by the first name Donna and the first initial of their last name.)

"We [took the names] to make fun of other bands that have matching names and stuff," guitarist Allison Robertson said. "So for it to follow us around was major karma — we were making fun of people, and then everyone started making fun of us."

"It was like, OK, let's get that out of the way and start talking about something else," drummer Torry Castellano chimed in. "We knew we wanted to do something different [with this record], and we'd always kind of put all these rules on ourselves, and we kind of threw out all of those rules for this record."

Gold Medal, due on October 26, is a conscious departure from the straight-up teen-party anthems of the group's previous albums.

"Fall Behind Me," the first single, boasts a tougher sound (courtesy of producer Butch Walker, who's also worked with Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan) and deeper, more controlled vocals that suggest a new confidence and aggression. "You're gonna fall behind me/ You're gonna cry and beg for mercy/ 'Cause you're not ready, baby/ You got nothing on me," sings lead singer Brett Anderson in the song's chorus.

"There's a lot of competition [between bands]," Robertson said, explaining the meaning behind the track. "Maybe we won't do a lot of things because we find them degrading or stupid and [they] happen to not be our criteria. There's always another band that'll take that job you don't want to take and then they'll get that exposure — and then it's hard to see other people saying, 'Well, they did that so they're better than you' or 'They're much more huge.' This song is sort of like, 'That's all right because they're going to be gone in, like, a year. They're just sort of trendy right now.' "

While they're still young, the Donnas (whose lineup also includes bassist Maya Ford) have been making irreverent rock since they formed in May 1993, when all four members were in eighth grade in Palo Alto, California. The band went through two other monikers before settling on the one that paid tribute to the Ramones. They have similarly absorbed elements from a pool of punk and metal influences, including the Runaways, the Go-Go's, AC/DC and Kiss. After a series of albums released on Lookout! Records, the band signed with Atlantic in 2001 and released its major label debut, Spend the Night, the following year.

While that album featured a more polished version of the Donnas' campy punk-pop sound, Gold Medal takes the maturation process a step further — and not just musically. Older songs like "40 Boys in 40 Nights" (from Turn 21) and "Dirty Denim" (Spend the Night), which found the Donnas tossing off boys like last year's jeans, have evolved into tracks like "Don't Break Me Down," which instead focus on making a relationship work.

"In our last albums, we kind of reveled in being like, 'Screw you, we're gonna move on to someone else,' 'cause we were young and that's what you do," Robertson said. "Now, we've all met people that are worth it; at that point, I don't think we had people that were really worth it. The general feeling was like, whatever. Those people are gone now, and we're onto a new batch of keepers."

The band, currently playing a smattering of one-off gigs and radio shows, will launch a full U.S. tour in early November with the Von Bondies and the Starlite Desperation supporting. Until then, fans can check out the band's first single when it hits radio next week, and watch the video when MTV2 airs "The Donnas Make a Video" on Thursday (September 16) at 9 p.m.

Spending much of their time off watching their peers perform has the Donnas itching to get back on the road to play their new songs — especially the single.

"We're all really excited about it," Castellano said. "It's kind of conceited, but sometimes I feel bad for people that haven't heard it."

The Donnas' tour dates, according to the band's publicist:
