MANCHESTER, Tennessee — If you're reading this, it probably means that I survived the dust and the djembes of Bonnaroo 2007 ... that I somehow made it back to my campsite night after night, that I didn't expire due to heatstroke or dehydration or bug attack, and that — by some higher grace — I wasn't killed by an overdose of my own New York-bred cynicism.

By now, you've probably heard a lot about Bonnaroo: that it's a hippie festival where no one showers and the air is heavy with patchouli and pot smoke, that it's a vaguely creepy (and sorta hilarous) commune with jam bands noodling on long into the night and kids selling — ahem — sundries out of the back of dusty VW buses.

And, of course, all of that is true: Bonnaroo is, in a sense, a very crunchy stereotype theater. But if you're willing to look past all the peasant dresses and dreadlocks, and if you're not too shy to immerse yourself in it (as I did — catch even more about the bands and my hot, rocking, smelly weekend in this here blog), you'll realize that the festival is probably the best in America: an honest, snark-free celebration of music and music fans. It's also a well-oiled, clean-burning machine (seriously: 80,000 fans separating glass bottles and metal cans from their campsite trash!?!) that has, over the past few years, made a subtle but determined decision to become the best summer fest in the world.

Last year, 'Roo organizers decided to shake up the fest's jam-band connotations by bringing in a few ringers — namely Radiohead — plus a host of completely un-jammy acts like Beck, Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes
(see "Radiohead Marathon, Beck Puppet Show, Partial Phish Jam Mix It Up At Bonnaroo") to raise their profile. And this year, they decided to pull out all the stops, scoring the coup-de-grace of summer fest headliners (the Police), plus Maynard James Keenan's murky and mysterious Tool, the mighty White Stripes, the critically adored Wilco and, in the interest of keeping it real for the jam-band set, Widespread Panic.

And those were just the headliners. Smaller stages (with aggravating names like the This Tent, the That Tent, etc.) were rocked and swayed by the likes of Lily Allen, the Hold Steady, Tortoise, Feist, DJ Shadow (who, if you were to believe his on-stage banter, chose Bonnaroo as the place to announce his retirement from live performance), the National, Girl Talk, Gogol Bordello and Galactic.

It was as diverse and massive a lineup as any festival around the world, one carefully planned to appeal to both 'Roo vets and newcomers alike. And appeal it did: The fest sold out all of its 80,000 tickets again this year — and everyone, from sunbaked junior Deadheads to junior account executives, partied and danced into the wee hours of the morning, worked the drum-circle circuit back at their dusty campsites and didn't seem to mind sleeping for only a few hours each night.

That dedication was both amazing and sort of scary, but when there's so much music to be heard, sleep sort of becomes an afterthought. For the first time, this year's festival featured a full lineup on Thursday, meaning that there were now four days of nearly nonstop rock to ingest.

But Thursday was still just a warm-up for the three days of serious action that lay ahead. Most got their heads on straight to watch Lily Allen bob and weave her way through a set of sharp-tongued pop, or a bit of nerd-tronica courtesy of Hot Chip. Then, as shadows grew long, the tough choices loomed: spooky avant metal courtesy of Tool, or the warm-and-fuzzy mandolin jams of the String Cheese Incident?

I chose both, admiring the sheer amount of glowsticks SCI fans lobbed skyward during a series of rapidly unspooled solos, then trekking off into the darkness to catch Tool build throbbing basslines into dark, proggy towers, with Keenan cracking jokes about "the marijuana and the LSD" and probably reveling in the fact that he just seriously fried some minds (though we'll probably never be sure, since Tool did no press and allowed no one to film or photograph their set).

Saturday was opressively hot (a recurring theme of the festival, for sure) but that didn't stop fans from bobbing to a spiky set from Franz Ferdinand or getting all goofy for Regina Spektor. And no one seemed to mind the soaring temperatures during the Hold Steady's early evening performance, which featured so much fist-pumping from the audience that even the band seemed surprised.

And by the time the Steady wrapped, things were really shifting into high gear, with hyped-up kids (and, presumably, their parents) pressed hard against the main stage security barrier to catch the Police's much-hyped set, which started out so promising — with a blast of the gong from drummer Stewart Copeland and an incredibly proficient version of "Message in a Bottle" — but quickly devolved into roughly 100 minutes of jammed-out, sorta ambient music with the occasional mega-hit sprinkled in for good measure. It's not that the Police weren't technically sound — they were — it's just that they never really connected with the Bonnaroo crowd, and it didn't help when Sting surveyed them all and decided that they were "80,000 Tennesseans." And all that happened before the Police decided to cut their set short about an hour — which is about as close as you can get to a sin 'round these parts.

But the Police's shortcomings only opened the door for a host of other acts to swoop in and steal the night. Girl Talk cracked open his laptop and delivered a sweaty, super-fun set, and the Philadelphia Experiment — a jazzy side-project of the Roots' ?uestlove — made things cool and funky. But the night belonged to the Flaming Lips, who landed a spaceship onstage, then — flanked by an army of dancing Santas and Martians, and bolstered by their usual assortment of eye-melting live show tricks (dry ice, streamers, hundreds of balloons) — delivered an impassioned, ragged and downright joyful set ... the kind that makes you forget that frontman Wayne Coyne's voice has been shot since about 2003.

With so much energy buzzing in the air on Saturday, it's no wonder Sunday had such a low-key vibe. Most began packing up their campsites by midday, and as the sun began to set on the dusty fields, roughly one-fourth of the previous night's revellers were long gone, which is a shame. Why? Because they missed probably the best sets of the festival: First from Wilco, who injected spacey ambience into their threadbare tunes, and then from the White Stripes, who tore through a thunderous and squealing set with delightful abandon, making more noise than a two-piece should legally be allowed to.

The last band of the fest was venerable jam pioneers Widespread Panic, but, to be honest, by the time they took the stage, I was spent: too much sun, too much sound. But still, it was a blast. Four days of good times and grime. Is it the best festival in the world? Well, that's a discussion for another day. All I know is that myself — and 80,000 like me — had a blast, and I made it home in one piece.

Isn't that enough?

Trent Reznor is old enough to be Avril Lavigne's dad, but that doesn't mean they can't duke it out in the ring ... er, record store. Reznor and Lavigne have been defined throughout their careers as iconoclasts, and now it's time to see which rebel can yell the loudest — Lavigne, on her third studio LP, or Reznor, on Nine Inch Nails' fifth.

NIN fans have been in bliss since Reznor announced that he'd already completed a new album just two years after releasing With Teeth — it usually takes him five or seven to get around to making a new one. And he gets an extra pat on the back for coming up with an illustrious, apparently well-thought-out concept: Year Zero depicts a future society poised on the brink of Armageddon, and there's a deliciously enigmatic marketing campaign to go along with it.

"It takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good," Reznor recently wrote on his blog. "If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point — politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth."

Among the 16 tracks are "Meet Your Master," "The Great Destroyer," "My Violent Heart," "The Beginning of the End" and "Zero-Sum." That's Reznor for ya — always chipper.

If Lavigne's The Best Damn Thing is a concept album, it's a, uh, pretty loose one. "Everything Back but You" is about bad spelling, while "Girlfriend" — surprise — is about wanting to snatch up someone else's man. Don't expect her to dig all that much deeper on "Runaway," "Keep Holding On" and, ahem, "I Don't Have to Try." But Avril fans who have waited three years for The Best Damn Thing are still in for a treat: a deluxe limited-edition with bonuses galore is dropping as well.

Also on the pop front this week is Pink's first DVD, "Live From Wembley Arena - London, England." We have no idea where the concert footage is taken from, but we do know that it was taped December 4 and that a hefty 20 performances are featured, including "Dear Mr. President," "The One That Got Away" and "I'm Not Dead."

As far as chart contenders go, though, there are really just two more to take into account this week. Bucky Covington is hoping to pull a Taylor Hicks — or even just an Elliott Yamin — with his self-titled LP. The fifth-season "American Idol" finalist is trying to appeal to Tim McGraw and Travis Tritt fans with country tunes like "Back When We Were Gods," "Ain't No Thing" and "Bible and the Belt."

That leaves Fightstar, the post-hardcore Londoners who have sold more than 50,000 copies of their Grand Unification debut, which would seem to be a good thing unless they're planning to go the way of the Darkness, et al. The album has already spawned two singles abroad — "Paint Your Target" and "Grand Unification, Part 1" — and while the band could count on those to do some damage Stateside, a spot on one of this summer's metal tours would certainly give Fightstar a lot more exposure.

Also this week:

· Snoop Dogg, Jim Jones, Shaggy, N.O.R.E. and Pitbull pump up Unexpected, the second album by Spanish Harlem, New York, rapper Lumidee. You may have already heard some of it, as her cover of "She's Like the Wind" — by Patrick Swayze! From "Dirty Dancing"! — has already been making the rounds on radio.

· Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and Fugazi bassist Joe Lally bring back their Ataxia project for AW II — although that could be the first you've heard of the project, as it's been kept on the down-low. The band's much-delayed second LP represents the second half of its January 2004 sessions.

· Another guy from a band you may have heard of is stepping up with a new one this week, although Page McConnell moved on years ago from the defunct Phish. His first, eponymous solo release — which he's been hammering away at for two years with Phish drummer Jon Fishman — was recorded in Vermont and Brooklyn, New York, and features "Complex Wind," "Maid Marian" and "Close to Home."

· The Hold Steady are hoping to coast on their buzz a little while longer with a new EP, Live at Fingerprints — but the darn thing's so limited that it'll probably only satisfy the hard-core aficionados. The five acoustic tracks featured on Live at Fingerprints were recorded in October at the Long Beach, California, record store and, as such, will only be available in select indie shops.

· And oh yeah, those dudes Tarantula A.D.? Well, they're now going by the name Priestbird — no, not because another band had the previous name, but because, according to a press release, "The band felt an overall change was in order." The heavily layered In Your Time features all three bandmembers singing for the first time, playing a combined dozen-plus instruments (forks included!) and was recorded by none other than Black Crowes engineer Chris Ribando. Go fig.

Song Title of the Week:

"Sad Panda Clown's Lament" from Dolly Varden's The Panic Bell

Other Notables:

The Eames Era's Heroes and Sheroes: With their song "When You Were a Millionaire" already having snuck its way onto MTV's "I'm From Rolling Stone," the Louisiana rockers are hoping some of the other 16 tracks on the disc get 'em a little more exposure. After all, they deserve some good luck: The Eames Era were hit head-on by a National Guard truck as it was driving to provide hurricane relief post-Katrina. Not coincidentally, the album title is a phrase New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin used after the catastrophe.

The Greyboy Allstars' What Happened to Television?: Indie luminary Inara George crops up on this album as part of the guesting Living Sisters trio, but the 14-year-old Greyboy collective itself features the even more reputed Karl Denson (of Tiny Universe note) and Elgin Park, who scored "Donnie Darko" and TV's "Freaks and Geeks." You may have heard the first single, "How Glad I Am," before — it's previously been covered by Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson and many others.

Watchers' Vampire Driver: This Chicago quintet pulls from reggae, new wave, soul and punk but also manages to utilize traffic cones, light bulbs and pylons for its distinct sound. That blend has attracted guests James Chance and the Eternals' Wayne Montana for the Watchers' second effort, which features the keyboard-laden "Science Theme" and raucous "We've Got a Witness."

UPN's May sweeps strategy seems to be "Bring on the music guest stars!" Chingy pops in for some "One on One" on May 2 at 8 p.m., Omarion appears on "Cuts" on May 16 at 8:30 p.m., and Toni Braxton fights city hall to keep her Harlem hair salon on two episodes of "Kevin Hill" airing May 4 and 11 at 9 p.m. For the season finales of "All of Us" and "Eve," Damon Dash and Ludacris appear on the back-to-back episodes, airing May 24 at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ... Nelly is holding a fundraiser for his inner-city youth program 4Sho4Kids on May 5 at Judith Leiber's new flagship store in New York. The rapper will play auctioneer for one-of-a-kind items, such as a diamond-encrusted Hello Kitty evening bag co-designed by Leiber and Kimora Lee Simmons, as well as VIP backstage tickets to Nelly's tour. "What I am trying to do with 4Sho4Kids and children nationwide, is to encourage them to use their minds and provide them with a positive environment," Nelly said in a statement. "Not only is this is an exciting joint venture for both Judith Leiber and myself, but an event for a good cause." ...

System of a Down will be taking experimental prog-noise merchants the Mars Volta out for a two-month road trek that'll cross these United States, bringing with it marathon guitar solos, wildly unpredictable wailing and lots of hair. Though the tour is slated to kick off in early August, there is no confirmed itinerary yet, a System spokesperson said. ... DJ Shadow is reissuing his seminal 1996 album, Endtroducing, in a two-disc deluxe edition. The second disc will include demos, a live track recorded in 1997 and previously unreleased remixes. Also included in the packaging are new liner notes from Shadow himself, and excerpts from an upcoming book about the album's impact. The expanded edition of Endtroducing is due June 7. ...

Le Tigre's most well-known issue is feminism, but the activist punk-electronica band is also taking on animal rights in a PSA the trio just shot for PETA. With the slogan "Don't let your honey wear a bunny," the band poses with its own pet bunny, Karen. During the photo shoot, Kathleen Hanna explained to MTV News that while they prefer this sort of "softer, gentler" anti-fur approach, methods like throwing fake blood on people seems to yield more results. "A lot of models won't wear fur because they don't want to be embarrassed publicly," she said. Le Tigre are up against the Scissor Sisters, Melissa Etheridge, Rufus Wainwright and George Michael for Outstanding Music Artist at the 16th annual GLAAD Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles. ... This year may have seen the re-release of Pavement's seminal Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, but ex-Pave singer Stephen Malkmus thinks the releases should end there. "I don't really have a voting power in that [decision]," Malkmus said. "But if the [label and the rest of the band] said they wanted to do it, I'd just go, 'OK.' There's some extra songs, but [the next disc in line, 1995's] Wowee Zowee is already a long enough album. It doesn't need it. There has to be enough songs to warrant it, you know? And I don't know if there are." ...

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey are purchasing a condo in Las Vegas at George Maloof's new high rise, Palms Place, which won't open for another two years. "George is going to have a two-story basketball suite which is down the hall from a multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art recording studio there ... so I'm there," Lachey said in a statement. Prices range from $500,000 to $7 million for the fully furnished condos. ... R&B group Xscape will release Unchained, their first album in seven years, in the fall. In the meantime, the group (with Kiesha Miles replacing Kandi Burruss) just released the single "What's Up," which samples Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock." ... Celine Dion will donate the proceeds from her special Mother's Day performance to UNICEF's Tsunami Recovery Fund, The Associated Press reports. The Canadian songstress said she hopes the May 8 show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas will bring in at least $1 million for the cause. ...

There was more jamming than award presenting at Tuesday night's fifth annual Jammy Awards. Disbanded jam gods Phish won tour of the year, the Dead got best download, Dead member Phil Lesh took home best live show, Umphrey's McGee's "In the Kitchen" was named song of the year, Gov't Mule won best studio album, Keller Williams snagged best live album, and Buddy Guy was given a lifetime achievement award. Among those taking the stage of the Theater at Madison Square Garden was the unlikely trio of Huey Lewis, gospel great Mavis Staples and the recently unretired Sinead O'Connor. Blues great Guy also jammed alongside John Mayer with the Roots' ?uestlove on drums and Lesh on bass. ...

The prosecution is wrapping up its case against Michael Jackson in what's expected to be the last week of testimony against him. The singer's lawyers argued in and out of court on Monday, trying to convince the judge not to allow the testimony of Jackson's ex-wife Debbie Rowe (they lost that one), and fighting with each other outside of court. Neither Thomas Mesereau nor Brian Oxman would comment on their argument, but it was later learned that Oxman would no longer be on the defense team as of Thursday. In the meantime, another one of the "Neverland 5" — former employees who claim they witnessed Jackson molesting various boys and lost their jobs after testifying before a grand jury — took the stand. Kassim Abdool testified that he witnessed Jackson kissing the 1993 accuser. ...

An airborne bottle cut rock band Kasabian's set short Friday night at the Academy in Glasgow, Scotland, after an audience member pitched the projectile at guitarist Sergio Pizzorno's head, leaving him with a sizable gash that required six sutures. In a statement, Pizzorno said it was "a shame the actions of one person put an end to our best gig all year" and recommended that those who see the band live in the future, should they feel the urge to throw anything, "throw bras and knickers from now on." ...

For Shakira's new video for the dancehall-flavored "La Tortura," she worked with director Michael Haussman (Kanye West, Madonna) to create a combative moment in a couple's relationship. Filmed in an art deco building, her significant other, played by Alejandro Sanz, sings about his "transgressions" en Español while Shakira fires back that she won't forgive him. The clip debuts Tuesday at 6 p.m. on MTV, while her album, Fijacion Oral Part 1, is due June 7. ... Ricky Martin, moved by his visit to the tsunami-ravaged villages of Southeast Asia, is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to help build and restore 224 houses in Thailand's Pang Nga province. A donation from the Ricky Martin Foundation will help more than 1,000 people move out of temporary shelters and overcrowded camps. Work is expected to begin this month and be completed in March 2007. The singer's spokesperson said Martin will make another trip to lend a hand in the rebuilding process. ...

You Hear It First band and Fred Durst protégés Ringside will open for Weezer from April 26 in Vancouver to May 14 in Atlanta. The tour marks the first outing for the duo of singer/songwriter Scott Thomas and producer/actor Balthazar Getty. ... Claymates can now show their admiration for Clay Aiken every time they make a purchase. MasterCard affiliate Myplash (short for "my plastic cash") just released an Aiken debit card, as well as a Simple Plan edition, and will continue putting music celebrities on their cards. ...

Two months after 32-year-old Tracey Gardner-Tetso failed to meet up with friends at a Mötley Crüe concert in Washington, D.C., the band is stepping up to match the $10,000 reward put up by the Victims' Rights Foundation. "We hope our involvement helps brings more attention to this case and anyone with information will step forward," bassist Nikki Sixx said in a statement. Tetso is white, 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds and has long blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen driving a 1996 black Pontiac Trans Am with tinted windows and Maryland plates LRN 534. The car was found March 17th in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Anyone with information should call police at (410) 407-2020. ... Tupac's mom, Afeni Shakur, is happy that T.I. and Lil' Flip have resolved their beef and said it's a "wonderful lesson" for the rest of the rap community. "It's been nearly 10 years since everything between Tupac and Biggie, and rappers today are paying a lot of lip service to the lessons they learned from that tragedy," she said in a statement, "but how many of them are actually showing it in their actions? I'm proud of the way T.I. and Lil' Flip have settled their differences." ...

Get ready to call Lance Bass' bluff — the 'NSYNC singer is going to put on his game face during a no-limit round of Texas hold 'em on "Poker Royale: Celebrities Vs. The seven-episode series debuts May 6 at 9 p.m. ET on GSN. ... Faith Evans' songs from her album The First Lady are now available as ring tones on Virgin Mobile. The ring tone for her first single, "Again," will be exclusive for one month, while the "Goin' Out" and "Tru Love" will be exclusive for two months. ... Fantasia will be the opening act for soul singer Kem for three weeks beginning June 8 in St. Louis and wrapping up July 1 in Atlanta.

Patti Smith, Nellie McKay and Huey Lewis are joining the Jammys lineup, which already includes Sinead O'Connor with Burning Spear. Mavis Staples and Phish bassist Mike Gordon have also been added to the bill. The jam-music awards show takes place Tuesday at New York's Madison Square Garden. ... Dark Star Orchestra co-founder Scott Larned, 37, died Sunday from heart failure, the band announced on its Web site. As keyboardist for the world's preeminent Grateful Dead cover band, who specialized in re-creating entire Dead shows onstage down to the smallest musical detail, Larned's demise eerily follows that of three actual Grateful Dead keyboardists: Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (1945-73) and Brent Mydland (1952-90), who died while they were still members of the group, and Keith Godchaux, who left the band in 1979 and died in 1980. ...

Ch-check out this week's batch of new releases: a little bit of country, pop, rap — and a lot of rock and roll.

In July of 1998, a Brooklyn-bred rap trio said Hello Nasty to its fans after a four-year absence, and then bid them goodbye for the next six years. Bringing the music back To the 5 Boroughs, the Beastie Boys make their long-awaited return this week, fueled by the single "Ch-Check It Out."

Phish phans get some music to mourn to this week, as the band releases its final studio album, Undermind. Sixteen years after Phish put out their debut album, the kings of modern jam bands are releasing their last album and completing their last tour, then calling it a day.

For fans of pint-sized pop star Christina Milian, It's About Time she released her sophomore album, because it's been three years since her first.

What happened in a Las Vegas garage beginning in late 2002 didn't stay there. Sin City indie-rock outfit the Killers release their debut album, Hot Fuss, this week, while legendary British band the Fall release The Real New Fall LP, Formerly Known as Country on the Click.

Patti Scialfa, the first lady of New Jersey rock and roll and an E Street Band member, is branching out this week as she releases 23rd Street Lullaby.

Former "American Idol" contestant Josh Gracin, whose pop-country style put him at fourth place in the competition, releases his debut self-titled album. Also out this week are albums from Seether (Disclaimer) and Pink Grease (This Is for Real), and finally, weighing in with a live album is Cali-born mixmaster DJ Shadow, with Live! In Tune & on Time.

DJ Shadow said he was recently described as a "gateway artist," someone whose work encourages people to delve into other types of music, and recalled it as one of the biggest compliments he'd ever received. All ego boosts aside, it is an apt description.

15 months in the making, The Private Press is Shadow's long-awaited proper follow-up to 1996's Endtroducing, the seminal record combining lush ambient and hip-hop elements that earned Shadow's music the "trip-hop" label other sonically complex, non-conformist acts such as Portishead and Esthero are also saddled with.

The entirely sampled The Private Press isn't just Endtroducing part two. "I was trying to make music that, for me, was a progression," he said on a brief break from soundcheck. "I was trying to not repeat myself. I thought, 'You can respect your fans and you can treasure your fans, but you can't cater to them.' As much as I knew a lot of people thought they wanted to hear another Endtroducing, I had to give them enough credit to know that they actually don't want that."

"I'm a fan of a thousand bands or artists or DJs," Shadow continued, "and sometimes I think to myself, 'Damn, I wish Public Enemy would just do another album like It Takes a Nation of Millions [to Hold Us Back],' but then if they ever do something like that, you realize, 'Hmm, why isn't it hitting me the same way?' And what you're actually looking for, as a fan and as somebody who invests in an artist, is for them to continue to develop and evolve. So I was just trying to, in my own way and on my own terms, evolve musically."

The first step in his musical evolution was to go back and listen to music. Not a very surprising move, but the way in which he absorbed and understood the sounds was different than he'd ever known. "In the first few months of working on the record, I made a pretty big leap personally in my musical evolution. Just in taking in a lot of influence, stuff I hadn't heard before. I felt like I started to understand certain genres of music the way I never had before and I started to understand why certain artists did what they did.

"To understand what the artist was thinking about and what he or she was protesting against or why they were creating that music then, to me is very fascinating," Shadow continued. "It just gives you a deeper appreciation for the music when you understand the cultural context. That's why it frustrates me when people that aren't involved in hip-hop or didn't grow up listening to it or have not made any real effort to understand hip-hop just use the surface sounds, like sampling a rap tune and not really understanding anything about what made that music so powerful at the time."

In 2000, armed with this new understanding and insight, DJ Shadow set about recording The Private Press. To share what he had learned, he decided not only to sample the sounds of the music, but also capture the spirit of it.

The title The Private Press is a reference to the vanity labels on which the album's obscure recordings would traditionally be released. In an effort to maintain the integrity of the original songs though they are changed beyond recognition — the DJ's specialty — Shadow gives a nod to their roots.

Some of the work on The Private Press wasn't so calculated. While very few of the songs have actual lyrics, the album and its titles follow a visceral progression that gives the LP a sense of continuity and completeness. "Sometimes the titles come almost immediately before there's even a structure to the song," DJ Shadow said. "Case in point would be 'Fixed Income.' That title leapt into my brain when it was just that throbbing bass sound and the drums. I don't know why that title popped into my head, but I always knew that it fit and it helped me finish the song."

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with "You Can't Go Home Again."

"I've never been happy with that title. I struggled on a title for that song forever because I fell in love with the demo. The initial basis of the song came about in a couple of hours and I really liked it and it was so interesting to me structurally. I always tried to think of titles that could measure up to how I felt about the demo and how the song came out because I'm really happy with it, and I never really could. So I had to just come up with a title that could put somewhat of a nice neat bow on the end of the album.

"I can live with it now," he said, with a laugh. "It usually takes me four months to start slowly forgetting all the things I was lamenting, so I'm kind of starting that process now."

After five years of waiting for a new full-length solo effort, DJ Shadow's fans are finally treated to the follow-up album to Entroducing ... This time the innovative DJ offers The Private Press, an album that took him 15 months to complete and was created entirely from sampled music.

Also out Tuesday (June 4) is young newcomer Avril Lavigne's debut Let Go, an album devoted to urging people to be themselves, as evidenced on such songs as "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi."

Me'Shell Ndegeocello's Cookie: An Anthropological Mixtape shares shelf space with Belle & Sebastian's Storytelling and the Roots' resident human beat box, Scratch, and his The Embodiment of Instrumentation.

And how about those soundtracks to go with the summer movie blockbusters? This week's notables are "Getting There," the latest Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen adventure which bills the twins as "Sweet 16 and licensed to drive"; and music from and inspired by "Scooby-Doo," featuring Outkast, Kylie Minogue and Lil' Romeo, which might just be better than the movie itself. Ruuh-oh!
