Just Did It: Justin Timberlake is serving up a few treats with his FutureSex/LoveSounds — fans who preordered from iTunes just got the digital version of "SexyBack," a short making-of-the-song video, plus the bonus cut "Boutique in Heaven" and a digital booklet. Beyond that, the only extra cut that seems to be floating around is "Pose," which appears on the U.K. edition. As for the proper 12-track LP, it boasts production by Timbaland, Will.I.Am, Rick Rubin and Timberlake himself, plus it features "(Another Song) All Over Again," "Until the End of Time" and two interludes: "LoveStoned/ I Think She Knows" and "What Goes Around ... Comes Around."

Not Just So So: Daz Dillinger drops his first disc on Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label this week, and he's calling it So So Gangsta. What a way to get on the boss' good side. But he's been cozying up with some other guys as well: Rick Ross, who appears on the first single, "On the Real"; Snoop, who pipes up on "DPG Fo' Life" with Supafly; Ice Cube, who cools off "Strizap"; Kurupt, who dirties up "Money on My Mind"; Jagged Edge, who help Daz prove he's "The One"; and Dupri songwriting cohort Johnta Austin, who helps savor the "Weekend." With additional production by Dupri and Scott Storch, expect Daz to, uh, dazzle.

TV Time: TV on the Radio might be making a Return to Cookie Mountain with their latest effort, but they're not returning to indie label Touch and Go — this LP is the band's first for Interscope. Still, the Brooklyn, New York, wizards are keeping it real by offering a free poster with purchase of the LP at a litany of indie record stores that they call out on their Web site. The U.S. version has three extra tunes that aren't being offered overseas: "Snakes and Martyrs," "Things You Can Do" and a remix of "Hours" by hip hip-hopper El-P.

Mission From Mars: With 2003's De-Loused in the Comatorium and last year's Frances the Mute saga, Mars Volta have spent their five-year career intent on challenging fans and frustrating nonbelievers. But while they again host Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante on Amputechture, and add ample amounts of horn and sound manipulation, this is their first LP that isn't a linear narrative. Which could make songs like "Tetragrammaton" and "Meccamputechture" either more or less coherent.

All in la Familia: Now that Tego Calderón's had his go at summer reggaetón sales, it's time for N.O.R.E. to step up and see if he can score higher than Tego's #43 Billboard albums chart debut. Diddy, Ja Rule, Fat Joe, Don Omar and, incidentally, Daddy Yankee all take a seat at the table on N.O.R.E. y la Familia's Ya Tú Sabe, which marks the first release by the so-called "Nuyorican" artist. La prueba para permanecer la calma.

May Day: Now that the Jessica Simpson rumors are subsiding, John Mayer fans can concentrate on Continuum, his fourth studio LP and the first one he's produced (albeit with some help from John Mayer Trio drummer Steve Jordan). Mayer burns through a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Bold as Love" and chalks up new renditions of "Vultures" and "Gravity," both reworked by the JMT.

Which Did You Hear First?: It's a You Hear It First face-off this week, with mtvU faves Plain White T's decompressing from their Warped Tour jaunt with Every Second Counts. In the meantime, more-recent YHIF selections Tally Hall are hoping to ride off the love they got from "The O.C." and "The Real World" with their Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum. PWT's' third record drops just weeks before their Nintendo Fusion tour with Hawthorne Heights, but Tally Hall have four-part harmonies and taste-making SoCal radio station KCRW. Who's calling heads?

In the Garden of Good and Evil: Don't let Heavens' name fool you — the project is actually fronted by Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba, a proud member of Anton LaVey's Church of Satan. F-Minus' Josiah Steinbrick is the other half of the duo, and their bleak Patent Pending is coated with songs of murder and obsession. Conversely, Ozzfest stalwarts Norma Jean are a Christian band, despite what you might think from songs like "The End of All Things Will Be Televised," "Cemetery Like a Stage" and "No Passenger: No Parasite," all of which appear on their Redeemer LP.

Beyond Heavens, also stirring up trouble this week is Jihad Jerry, a.k.a. Gerald V. Casale, one of the co-founders of Devo. On his politically divisive Mine Is Not a Holy War, he's backed by the Evildoers, which include the other Devo guys, plus A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese and Goo Goo Dolls keyboardist Dave Shultz. And of course, there's the usual crop of brutal troublemakers — we're looking at you, Mastodon (Blood Mountain), Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society's Shot to Hell), Hella (Acoustics EP), Hatesphere (The Sickness Within), Manticora (Black Circus [Part One]), Meliah Rage (The Deep and Dreamless Sleep), Xasthur (Subliminal Genocide) and ex-New Kid on the Block Jordan Knight (Love Songs).

Friends in Need: One could say Lionel Richie has proven himself a mildly successful artist over the years, but in case there's any doubt surrounding his newest opus, he's tapped Jermaine Dupri, Raphael Saadiq, Dallas Austin and other big-time producers to ensure big sales. Make sure you don't get his Coming Home confused with New Found Glory's, which drops next week.

Veruca Salt is another name you probably haven't heard in awhile, but for their first album in six years, they've hopped onto inimitable underground label Sympathy for the Record Industry and called on Radio Vago's Nicole Fiorentino and Failure's Kelli Scott to become their new bassist and drummer, respectively.

Mark Hoppus, Tim Armstrong, Nick Hexum, John Feldmann and Brett Gurewitz are also doing their part this week, giving a boost to the Matches. All five big guns help produce the Bay Area band's second Epitaph offering, Decomposer.

Blue Note/ Metro is issuing two new sets by Brazilian artist Marisa Monte — Infinito Particular and Universo Ao Meu Redor — and they feature guest work by David Byrne, Philip Glass and other high-ranking stars.

Twenty-one-year-old Matt Duke probably didn't expect Marshall Crenshaw, in addition to Dylan and Wings collaborators, to be helping him put together his Winter Child. But that's exactly what the vets did for his disc, which is being released through Drexel University's student-run Mad Dragon label.

And in case "Grey's Anatomy" is in need of even more lucrative success, the TV show's second soundtrack might do the trick. It features Snow Patrol, KT Tunstall, Gomez, Metric and others.

On a lesser note: Ex-Arcade Fire drummer Howard Bilerman engineered Angela Desveaux's Wandering Eyes, which also features Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s Mike Moya; and underground fave RJD2 hops onboard Pigeon John ... and the Summertime Pool Party.

Song Titles of the Week:

Tie between "Welcome to the Jungle Baby, You're Gunna Live!" from Hella's Acoustics EP and "I'm Wolverine and You're a Walrus and I'm Kicking Your Ass" from Miss Violetta Beauregarde's Odi Profanum Vulgus Et Arceo.

Other Notables:

Yo La Tengo's I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass: Sadly, YLT didn't come up with this album title themselves — it's actually a threat NBA Phoenix Suns forward/center Kurt Thomas made to New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury. In that vein, the pre-eminent New York indie-rockers developed a bonus "season pass" Web site for fans who preordered. If you've got the coupon code and instructions, a player streaming the entire album, a digital booklet, exclusive MP3s and advance notice on ticket sales are at your fingertips.

Xiu Xiu's The Air Force: "Your acne is like a pearl." Chances are the only place you'll be able to hear that phrase spoken is on the newest LP by the San Jose, California, post-punks, who fit right in alongside fellow noisemakers Deerhoof and Erase Errata. Produced by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and touted as the band's "most accessible" outing — which is kinda like calling the Saturday New York Times crossword "easier" than the Sunday one — it features "The Pineapple vs. the Watermelon," "Saint Pedro Glue Stick" and "The Wigmaster" ("Seinfeld" buffs take note, perhaps).

OOIOO's Taiga: Here's one for all the CD-packaging fiends out there. The fifth effort by the all-female Japanese group — captained by Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms infamy — comes in a deluxe, holographic-foil, embossed digipak. The glorious package is "aimed to enhance the transcendental experience," according to the label. If you're still not sold, check out the track list: "UMA," "KMS," "UJA," "GRS," "ATS," "SAI," "UMO" and "IOA." RAD.

The competition for the #1 spot on the albums chart is always tough. Luckily for Oasis, the Gallagher brothers know a thing or two about putting up a good fight.

Manchester, England's notoriously volatile rockers will release Don't Believe the Truth this week, the band's first album since 2002's Heathen Chemistry. The LP, which features writing by all four members, is led by the debut single, "Lyla."

Fans of New Orleans-bred trio Better Than Ezra have been waiting four years for the group's first album of new material since 2001's Closer. Before the Robots is the fifth studio release from the band, best known for the hit single "Good" off its 1995 debut, Deluxe.

Joining their British "next big thing" brethren are Maximo Park. Already a hit across the pond, their first album, A Certain Trigger, is another addition to the dance-infused, indie-rock catalog that seems to be growing by the day thanks to the success of such bands as Franz Ferdinand and the Bloc Party.

Icelandic chanteuse Björk releases her album of remixes and covers, Army of Me. In an effort to raise money for UNICEF, the singer decided to compile 20 remixes of her song "Army of Me," off 1995's Post, and release them all on one disc, with the proceeds going directly to the charity.

Also out this week are albums by Meshuggah (Catch Thirty Three), Daz Dillinger (Gangsta Crunk), Amusement Parks on Fire (Amusement Parks on Fire), Four Tet (Everything Ecstatic), GWAR (Live From Mt. Fuji), Layzie Bone (It's Not a Game), Kottonmouth Kings (Kottonmouth Kings No. 7) and Oppera (Oppera).

50 Cent, Snoop Dogg Join Forces To Form Rap Supergroup

A few weeks ago, Snoop said he'd recently told 50 Cent they should do an album together, and now it looks like the "P.I.M.P." video co-stars might make the idea a reality.

Under the supergroup moniker of "DPG-Unit," the Dogg Pound and G-Unit have recorded almost an entire LP worth of material together while on the Rock the Mic Tour.

"We're gonna take over the whole world," Snoop's cousin Daz said of the joint venture. "We got a song with me, Snoop Dogg, [Snoop's protégé] Soopafly, Young Buck, Lloyd Banks and 50 Cent for the G-Unit album."

The six MCs recorded nine other songs in a three-day period while on tour, but they don't have definite plans yet as to where the remaining tracks will pop up. The supergroup doesn't even have a record label to put an album out, but members have been toying with the possibility of using 50's G-Unit Records as a recording home.

"Eight [bars], eight [bars], eight [bars], then a hook. Eight, eight, eight, then a hook," Daz revealed of the DPG-Unit's song structures. "We're going back and forth. It's all about coordination. Sometimes we're in there doing our parts while [members of the G-Unit] are onstage. Sometimes they're doing their parts while we're onstage. We'll be in there sometimes together. Especially after the show, we have our little parties and whatever. We be having a good time. We're trying to make it a whole album, just unite together and keep it crackin.' "

So far the Dogg Pound and G-Unit have had a spotless record of success with their collaborations. It was Daz who brought 50 and his tour DJ, Whoo Kid, the Tupac vocals that wound up being used for the underground smash "The Realest Killas." Meanwhile, with Snoop appearing on 50's "P.I.M.P" remix, that record has also become a fan favorite.

Daz, who's also working out a solo recording deal with Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label (see "Jermaine Dupri To Sign 3LW, Former Dogg Pound Member Daz"), said his ties to the G-Unit go back further. As it turns out, Young Buck has been a friend of his for years.

Now, apparently, the camaraderie is running rampant throughout both camps.

"We'll all be talking to the G-Unit and tell them, 'Y'all are just like us.' We all like the same things."

Ashanti was last year's overnight success story, and now we've reached Chapter II. The lead single off her second album, "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)," is similar to "Foolish," the first single from her self-titled debut, in that she's talking about a relationship, she says "baby" one or a hundred times, and it's catchy as all get-out. (To hear Ashanti's new album, check out "The Leak: Ashanti Chapter II.")

Next up, B2K, who are cashing in on remixing their popular singles — again. The Remixes Vol. 2 reinterprets "Girlfriend" a few times as well as "Bump Bump Bump," "Bump That," "Stuck Like This" and "What a Girl Wants."

One of the many Queens of the Stone Age side projects reappears this week as Nick Oliveri's Mondo Generator drop their second album and reveal their Drug Problem That Never Existed.

Snoop Dogg guests on Daz Dillinger's DPGC ... U Know What I'm Throwing Up, while Shaggy 2 Dope of the Insane Clown Posse appears on Twiztid's The Green Book.

The Swedish quartet Division of Laura Lee release a three-song EP, Trapped In, and Our Lady Peace rock Live From Calgary and Edmonton.

And, finally, from the "they're oldies but goodies" file: Elvis Presley's Elvis: Up Close is a four-disc set that features, among other previously unreleased tracks, a concert recording from 1972; and Willie Nelson and Ray Price team up again to record Run That by Me One More Time.

Now let's run by what else is out this week.

You don't need to hear it from a Korn Korrospondent (whatever happened to them, by the way?) to know that the band is "Here to Stay." Their latest album, Untouchables, is this week's big new release.

Nipping at Korn's heels are those lovable Osbournes, whose Family Album compilation includes a few oldies and some new goodies — Kelly's rendition of "Papa Don't Preach" and Pat Boone's TV-theme version of "Crazy Train" among them.

Former Tony! Toni! Toné! crooner Raphael Saadiq releases Instant Vintage, featuring D'Angelo, Angie Stone, and TLC's T-Boz, while They Might Be Giants fans say Yes to the band's latest effort, No!.

With renewed vision and a new label to express it on, David Bowie serves up Heathen, his latest offering, which features guest spots from Dave Grohl and the Who's Pete Townshend.

Wanna see where all the beef began? Check out The Difference, the compilation featuring KRS-One's first dis track to Nelly ("Clear 'Em Out") as it hits shelves as well.

And some tribute albums — to Disturbed and System of a Down — may be cool, but it seems like just about anyone can get this type of recognition these days. What's next, a tribute to Sum41? Oh, wait ...

"Waste not, want not" may as well be Suge Knight's mantra — he, more than any other record executive, knows the importance of making the most of studio time.
It may take a few years, but chances are if you're one of Knight's past or present artists, your Death Row recordings are going to see the light of day. Knight has been able to eat off Tupac Shakur's music for years after the acclaimed MC died, and he even put out a couple of Snoop Dogg albums long after the Long Beach, California, native found refuge with Master P down South. Now Knight is geared up to put out an album by former Death Row inmates Tha Dogg Pound.

Featuring music recorded as late as a year and a half ago, Tha Dogg Pound 2002 is set to be released on July 31, two weeks after Pound member Kurupt drops a new solo album and three months after he and his partner Daz released an LP of new material.

"I kinda wanted to put Tha Dogg Pound back on the concrete, so I picked the more grounded records [for the album]," said Gregory "Hutch" Hutchinson, a.k.a. Above the Law's Cold 187um. "For a while, they had been doing more radio-friendly tracks, unlike what they had been doing at the beginning of their career."
As head of production for Death Row (a position once held by Dr. Dre), Hutch was responsible for scouring Suge's vaults and choosing songs for the album. Once he selected the cuts, he went through a month and a half of doctoring up the tracks.

"I went back and put a 2001 twist on them," Hutch said. Besides adding verses from current Death Row acts, including Crooked I and SKG, Hutch added his own enhancements — such as bass and synthesizer parts — to about 70 percent of the album's beats, which were primarily produced by Daz.

"[I changed them] not merely for the sake of changing them, but to enhance them, make them sound sweet and rich," he said. "That's an extra twist."
The Pound's LP has a distinctive g-funk feel. They team up with Tupac Shakur for "Don't Stop," which sees Daz rhyming about "mashing with the craziest, illest ni---as in town" while Pac lets off shots at Bad Boy Records, claiming to be "a Biggie annihilator" and a "Bad Boy killer." Meanwhile, Kurupt displays his usual battle rap skills.

The opening seconds of "Living Tha Gangsta Life," which features a cameo from Xzibit, includes a newscaster reporting that Snoop Dogg told police that Suge Knight killed Tupac. Then rapper Big C Style comes in and admonishes snitches.

Snoop himself is featured on "Smoke," and Nate Dogg can be found on "Just Doggin." The Row also secured the rights to include the remix of Jay-Z's "Change Tha Game" on the album.

As for how Tha Dogg Pound, who released their LP in May under the moniker Dillinger & Young Gotti, feel about the new album, Daz couldn't be reached for comment, but said in April that he had no beef as long as he can reap some of the financial rewards from its sales. Kurupt said Suge's move is something he would've done himself.

"I'm shocked he ain't been did it," Kurupt said recently. "I'm a fan now. I'm ready to buy it. There's so many songs on there I remember doing back in the days, I know he got. I'm like 'Man, I'd been drop a Dogg Pound record.' People wanna hear that. He got the rights to it so it's about time."
Hutch said he hasn't discussed the album with Tha Dogg Pound. "Everyone is kind of at a different level in terms of having different visions of the project, but I think they will be happy with it because it sounds great. Although I'm overseeing their work, my intentions were to make them look good. No matter what the politics are, it's still art."
You'll get to hear quite a bit more of Hutch's musical sculpting: He says the Row has banked at least two more albums' worth of Dogg Pound tracks.

Tha Dogg Pound 2002 track listing, according to Death Row:

Daz Dillinger lets the dogs out on an upcoming album that will reunite him with vocal partner Kurupt.
Since Death Row Records owns Tha Dogg Pound moniker under which the two released their first album, 1995's Dogg Food, the new Dillinger & Young Gotti will pair the rappers under the name DPG.

The album will be released May 1 on Daz's DPG Records. The California resident hopes to expand his independent company into a formidable industry power.

"We're going to work this independent like a major," said Daz, who rapped on Dr. Dre's The Chronic (1992) and produced several songs on Tupac's All Eyez on Me (1996). "We're trying to show these big labels we can move something small and make it big. We own this record, and this is what everybody's been waiting for for like five, six years."
Longtime friend Xzibit appears on "Gangsta Like," while Daz and Kurupt rap about street life on "My Heart Don't Pump No Fear" and females on "Gitta Strippin'." DPG will release a video for the single "Coastin'."
"Whatever came across when we put the beat up is what we rapped about," said Daz, who also produced the album. "The songs just came automatically. We've got 41 songs that didn't get on the album. I just put the hard ones on there."
Daz and Kurupt's visibility received a boost recently via their appearance on Jay-Z's "Change the Game" remix, featured on DJ Clue's The Professional Part 2. DPG appears on Beanie Sigel's upcoming The Reason (June 12), and Daz said he's flirting with the possibility of recording a solo album for Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella label.

All this exposure will come in handy as DPG prepares its next round of material.

"I'm independent, so I'm using all of this to my advantage," said Daz, who decided to go indie following his departure from Death Row two years ago. "I'm using all of these tactics for the street, independent hustle and making it large."
Daz will appear on and produce some of Kurupt's Space Boogie, coming this summer on Kurupt's Antra label. He's also working on his third solo album, This Is the Life I Lead, as well as on a host of "DPG America" albums.

"I'm going from state to state and messing with the local tycoons that's rapping," said Daz, who launched DPG Records with last year's R.A.W. This year DPG released Long Beach 2 Fillmoe with the Bay Area's JT the Bigga Figga. "I've got a distribution deal where I can come out with a record every Tuesday as long as I get it ready," Daz continued. "I'm going to do a DPG Texas, a DPG Colorado ..."
Daz's label will also release rock records eventually and plans to tap into the lucrative New Orleans rap market.

DPG are already planning their next album, The Gangster Sh--.
"How Dr. Dre and Snoop have their chemistry, we can do the same thing," Daz said. "Their fans are our fans. We're going to pick up the trails they did. It's just two dogs sniffing, finding their way back home."

Rappers Method Man of the Wu-Tang Clan and Daz Dillinger of Tha Dogg Pound are among the artists who helped Heltah Skeltah record the follow-up to the hip-hop outfit's 1996 debut "Nocturnal."

Group members Ruck and Rock will release their sophomore effort, "Magnum Force," on October 13. The first single from the album, "I Ain't Havin' That," was produced by Cuzin Bawb and Starang Wondah (O.G.C.) and uses the same beat as the Tribe Called Quest classic "Hot Sex" with the addition of an unmistakable Redman loop.

Method Man turns up on a track called "Gunz 'N Onez," while the late Tupac Shakur's clique, The Outlawz, appear on a song called "M.F.C. Lawz." Of course, the rest of the Boot Camp Click appears on the posse cut "Gang's All Here" and the album also features a skit called "Call Tyrone," a tongue-in-cheek answer to Erykah Badu's mega-hit "Tyrone."

Snoop Doggy Dogg and Daz Dillinger pled no contest on Tuesday (July 14) in Beverly Hills Municipal Court on separate charges of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana. Snoop, who is known to the court as Calvin Broadus, received the maximum fine of $100, plus a $170 penalty assessment fee and a $100 payment to the Victim's Restitution Fund, for a total cost of $370. The amount was paid the same day.

Daz, whose real name is Delmar Arnaud, was fined $75, plus a $136 penalty assessment fee, for a total cost of $211, which must to be paid by Aug. 31. The payment to the Victim's Restitution Fund was not imposed in Daz's case, and was not even addressed in court, according to the District Attorney.

As previously reported by MTV News, both rappers entered pleas of not guilty in early July after police discovered the marijuana on the men in May. The discovery of the marijuana occurred after an altercation with several other men backstage at a comedy show hosted by
Master P. Snoop, who was on summary probation for a 1997 weapons possession conviction, is now on formal probation because of the offense.

On Wednesday, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Daz Dillinger were in Beverly Hills Municipal Court where they entered pleas of not guilty to charges of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana.

The charges date back to May when Snoop and Daz allegedly had some sort of altercation with several other men (see "Snoop Doggy Dogg Arrested For Pot Possession"). They were backstage at a comedy show hosted by Master P, and when police investigated the incident, they say they discovered that Snoop and Daz had marijuana.

The misdemeanor usually carries a $100 fine, but could result in several years in jail for Snoop since he's already on probation for a 1997 weapons possession conviction. Snoop now faces a probation hearing next Tuesday.
