Rock-and-roll pioneer Bo Diddley died early Monday morning (June 2), of heart failure, at his home in Archer, Florida. He was 79 years old.

Diddley's given name was Ellas McDaniel. He was born in Mississippi but moved as a child to Chicago, where he first learned to play the violin (an instrument to which he returned on "The Clock Strikes Twelve," the B-side of 1959's "Say Man," one of his biggest hits). It was as a guitarist, though, that he began working on the streets of the South Side, and later made his most important contribution to rock music with the pummeling "Bo Diddley beat." This instantly recognizable rhythm figure, drenched in tremolo, was featured on the 1955 single "Bo Diddley," his first release on Chicago's Checker Records. (Checker was a subsidiary of Chess, which helped launch the rock-and-roll era that same year with Chuck Berry's epochal "Maybelline.")

Although he never really stopped working, Bo's biggest chart period was from the mid-1950s into the early '60s, with such memorable hits as "You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover," "Road Runner" and "Who Do You Love?" His influence, however, reverberated further. His 1957 "Mona" and 1959 "Crackin' Up" were covered by the Rolling Stones; and "I'm a Man," the flip side of "Bo Diddley," was resurrected (and kicked into overdrive) by the Yardbirds. And Bo's beat was the clear inspiration for the Buddy Holly hit "Not Fade Away" (which the Stones also covered), the 1958 Johnny Otis smash "Willie and the Hand Jive" (itself covered by Eric Clapton) and the Strangeloves' 1965 "I Want Candy" (which has been covered by everyone from Bow Wow Wow to Good Charlotte).

Since it's not possible to copyright a beat, Bo Diddley never received any royalties from the hits other musicians created around his trademark rhythm — a situation he always found annoying. There were other, less-remunerative compensations, though: In 1987, Bo was among the second round of legendary performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"I love challenging authority," Jessica Alba told In Style for the magazine's June issue. "It probably wasn't easy being my parents," the actress said. "The second somebody says, 'No,' to me is the second I'm going to jump up and say, 'Yes!' " Alba also said she's happy to be taking on eclectic roles that don't typecast her as "some kind of little tart." "Because obviously, if you have a womanly figure, you're not allowed to have a brain or any idea of the world whatsoever," she said facetiously. "You just have to be hot and use your body to get ahead."...

Two former parties associated with Eminem have filed a lawsuit over digital royalty rates against the rapper's Aftermath/Interscope recording home, according to Billboard. Em2M and the Bass Brothers' FBT Productions, which originally signed the rapper to its Web Entertainment label in 1995, claim to have received an unfair split of royalties from Eminem's Internet downloads and ringtone sales under an agreement signed in 1998. The lawsuit, filed Monday in a Los Angeles federal court, states the invested parties should be receiving 50 percent of net receipts for recording services — including, in this case, electronic and digital services, they claim — used by Aftermath/Interscope versus the lower undisclosed amount they had been receiving.
Grammys Know Bo Diddley, Orbison, And Others

December 18 [10:00 EDT] -- The 1998 Grammy Awards will be honoring Roy Orbison, Bo Diddley, Paul Robeson and the Mills Brothers with lifetime achievement awards at the live event set for February 25, according to the Associated Press.

The bespectacled Bo Diddley, a pioneer of rock n' roll guitar, is best known for a rhythmic style that came to be known as the Bo Diddley Beat, which is showcased in dozens of his songs like "Who Do You Love." He has been seen on MTV as the pool player opposing George Thorogood (a man who has covered several Diddley hits) in the video for Bad to the Bone. Bo Diddley continues an active career in the industry to this day.

Roy Orbison's trademark three-octave range garnered him hit after hits from the fifties right through to his death in 1988 including "Pretty Woman," "Crying" and "Only the Lonely." Just prior to his passing, he was a member of the all-star Travelling Wilburys alongside Tom Petty, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne.

Paul Robeson, who died in 1976, is known for deep resonant voice on standards including "Old Man River," and for his career as a gospel singer. The Mills Brothers enjoyed eight decades of success from the early 1930's harmonizing on such hits as "Tiger Rag" and "Cab Driver." Donald Mills is the quartet's only surviving member.
