Death Cab for Cutie already have some experience with the whole "original song for a movie" thing (by now you are surely aware that their "Meet Me on the Equinox" served as the lead single from the "New Moon" soundtrack), but by the sound of things, it seems like they're about ready for a career change.

On Wednesday night at the mtvU Woodie Awards — where Death Cab performed "Equinox" — MTV News got a chance to speak with them about their plans for life post-"Twilight." And, as it turns out, they've got even more soundtrack work on the horizon.

"We've got Death Cab stuff at some point in 2010. We sort of need to figure out when we're going to do it. We're thinking of taking the whole 'bloody and loose' concept to another level," DCFC guitarist Chris Walla said, in reference to his now-famous quote about the band's 2008 album Narrow Stairs. "Because I think 'Saw 8' is happening, so we're working on a song for the soundtrack of 'Saw 8.' So we're continuing on with the 'bloody' thing."

He's joking, obviously. But Walla did say the next Death Cab album will maintain some of the live-and-loose feel of Stairs only this time with an added focus on — as he put it — the "polish-y" side of things. And Wilco.

"I think probably [we'll be] continuing with the 'everybody live in a room' theme, but sort of — you know what I really dug? The last Wilco record," he said. "I think they took the thing that had happened on the previous record, where it was really live, and took the parts of that that worked really well but pulled back from the 'really live' a little bit to sort of concentrate and overdub in a couple of different spots, to concentrate on it and produce it and get it a little more polish-y.

"Narrow Stairs, I thought, was a really logical extreme, like we took the live thing as far as we could probably take it," he continued. "Every record is a learning experience, so maybe pulling back a bit from that and trying something else."

Walla added that there's no real timeline for when Death Cab will begin serious work on the new album. It seems their schedule has been a bit crowded recently, something you can blame on "New Moon."

"It's all demos at this point, and they are mostly kind of scratchy, unfinished demos. Ben [Gibbard]'s been writing and sort of getting back into it," Walla said. "The thing is, the whole idea with this time, was that we were going to finish touring in July and the end of the year was going to be sort of writing and decompressing. But the 'New Moon' thing happened, and it's like, we've all been busy. It's just been busy, it's been crazy. So I think the whole timeline is sort of getting pushed into the future a little bit."

NEW YORK — The Woodie Awards, mtvU's annual celebration of college music and independent spirit, are often thought of as the raucous kid brother to the Video Music Awards. They feature artists on the fringes of various music scenes and bands who are only a radio hit or buzzworthy live show away from breaking into the big time. This year's show was no different, featuring envelope-pushing weirdos like Matt and Kim and Passion Pit.

So what were Death Cab for Cutie — a band that has sold millions of records for a major label and whose recent hit is attached to the most hotly anticipated Hollywood movie of the season — doing there? They were teaching the kids how it's done.

Eschewing twitchy raucousness for the kind of stateliness usually reserved for the likes of bands like U2 and Coldplay, Ben Gibbard and his band filled Roseland Ballroom with the regal noise and big hooks of "Meet Me on the Equinox," the new single from the soundtrack to "New Moon."

But rather than appear as the tiny band that sold out, they were greeted as the local boys who made good in the outside world. Death Cab for Cutie spent the better part of a decade toiling on the margins, and they provided a glimpse into what is possible if you truly stick to your guns and carve out a niche for yourself. Indeed, Death Cab for Cutie simply became too good for the mainstream to ignore.

As far as "Meet Me on the Equinox" goes, the band absolutely killed it. Guitarist Chris Walla's towering, atmospheric power chords hung over the room like a great cloud of goth energy, while Gibbard crooned the song's melancholy refrain. "Everything/ Everything ends," goes the chorus, but for any young bands — or rapt fans, for that matter — watching Death Cab on Wednesday evening (November 18), "Equinox" represented the beginning of a possibility. "Thanks," Gibbard mumbled as the band left the stage, proving no amount of "Twilight" fandom or Hollywood spouses can take the indie out of certain people.

NEW YORK — The spirit and energy of the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards — the madcap awards show that celebrates independent music and college radio across the country — was distilled entirely in the show's opening performance.

Once the lights dimmed at Roseland Ballroom, house DJ Diplo cranked out booty-shaking jams while the giant video screens showed Brooklyn new-wave duo Matt and Kim riding through the city on bicycles. Once they arrived, they stormed the stage and kicked into "Lessons Learned." Flanked by eight backup singers who gradually stripped down to their underwear (in a nod to the Video Music Award-winning video for the same song), the duo jubilantly pounded out the song. Unlike this year's VMAs, stage crashers were welcomed during Matt and Kim's three minutes of joy, and Kim herself mounted the crowd at the end.

From there, Pete Wentz — dressed casually and holding a red plastic cup (a common accessory throughout the evening) — sauntered onstage and officially kicked off the show, which airs December 4 at 10 p.m. on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. What followed was a cavalcade of fun-loving guest appearances, energy-packed performances and plenty of enthusiastic crowd interaction.

Zooey Deschanel appeared next, running off a long and complicated story about cloning herself to find out about more bands and presenting the Breaking Woodie award to Never Shout Never. 3OH!3 turned plenty of heads when they appeared dressed in the same red-lace costume Lady Gaga wore to the VMAs, then handed the Left Field Woodie to a grateful Tech N9ne. Other winners included Hotel of the Laughing Tree (the Long Island quintet who picked up the Best Music on Campus Woodie and seemed overwhelmed by the whole fiasco), Green Day (who were absent, forcing Asher Roth to accept in their honor — which he did by leaping into the crowd while wearing a throwback basketball jersey) and Matt and Kim (who won the Best Video Woodie for "Lessons Learned").

On the performance front, nobody could quite match the manic grandeur of Matt and Kim, but Passion Pit (who whipped the crowd into a frenzy with a ridiculous rendition of "The Reeling") and the Clipse, (who brought out Cam'ron and Rick Ross for a chaotic but thrilling run through a handful of lightning-tongue verses) came pretty close. With all the flailing limbs and semi-nude people, it was easy to miss the easy poise of Death Cab for Cutie, who rolled through their "New Moon" soundtrack song, "Meet Me on the Equinox," with an arena-rock grace, clearly cementing themselves as not only the night's elder statesmen, but also the band ready for much bigger rooms than Roseland.

By the end of the evening, the crowd was soaked with sweat but still swaying and dancing and drinking. Like the best college party, it hardly mattered who won in the end (that would be Kings of Leon, who scored the night's top honor of Woodie of the Year).

HOLLYWOOD — "New Moon" mania took over the Hollywood & Highland Center on Friday night, as one of the first stops on the movie's nationwide Hot Topic promotional tour kicked off with an event featuring concerts by bands from the film's soundtrack, laughs with the cast, and a special appearance by the film's three biggest stars.

"Thank you to you guys," gushed Robert Pattinson, taking the stage alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in front of hundreds of shrieking, black-T-shirt-clad fans. "Without you, 'Twilight' wouldn't be anywhere."

Well, on Friday night, it was everywhere. In two different storefronts, autographs were being signed by the likes of Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene and members of the Wolf pack and the Volturi. In the main courtyard, Death Cab for Cutie, Band of Skulls, Sea Wolf and Anya Marina each rocked the stage for a few songs, promoting the "New Moon" soundtrack. Fans wrapped around the enormous outdoor mall like some sort of shrieking Team Edward anaconda.

"It's a massive phenomenon, not because people are into vampires, but because it's this love story that touches everybody," Marina explained. "I just saw the final cut [of 'New Moon'] last night. It's really great!"

Judging from the ear-shattering response of the fans, the cast Q&A was just as great. Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Jamie Campbell Bower, Elizabeth Reaser, Kellan Lutz, Cameron Bright, Nikki Reed, Chaske Spencer, Kiowa Gordon, Alex Meraz and Bronson Pelletier all jockeyed for space on the crowded stage, waving to fans and smiling as they answered questions that usually started with "What's your favorite...?"

"I'd like to take a walk on the beach with Nikki Reed," teased Reaser. "I'd prowl the streets in the nude," added the always-outrageous Jamie Campbell Bower.

"I have a pretty good feeling that we'd be having game night at my house," smiled Greene, looking over at Lutz and saying they'd be enjoying a rousing round of Taboo.

Playing along, Lutz — who can work a crowd of Twilighters better than a politician at a rally — said he'd still want his several hundred closest friends to come along. "I'd invite over all you guys too," he said to approving applause.

The forecast for the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards: dark, with a chance of nudity.

That's because vampire aficionados Death Cab for Cutie, Jack White's rough-and-tumble murk-rock outfit the Dead Weather and frequently nude indie duo Matt and Kim have been confirmed as performers at the sixth annual awards show, which showcases the best and brightest as chosen by college students across the country.

The 2009 Woodies will take place November 18 at New York's Roseland Ballroom and will air on MTV, MTV2, mtvU and Palladia on Friday, December 4, at 10 p.m. ET.

All three acts also have clips — Death Cab's "Grapevine Fires," Matt and Kim's "Lessons Learned" and the Dead Weather's "Treat Me Like Your Mother" — up for Best Video at the show. Other nominees include the Kings of Leon, Drake, Kid Cudi and Green Day.

It's not known what song the Weather will perform, but Matt and Kim will do "Lessons" (no word on whether or not they'll do it in the buff) and Death Cab will be performing "Meet Me on the Equinox," the much-discussed first single from the "New Moon" soundtrack. This also marks the second time Death Cab have performed at the Woodies; in 2005, they shared the stage with Matisyahu, Little Brother and Saul Williams.

In keeping with the spirit of the awards, fans will be picking the winners in each category. Voting is now open at Woodies.MTV.com and will run until November 16.

The "Twilight" soundtrack — featuring music from Paramore, Linkin Park and some guy named — has, to date, sold nearly 2.3 million copies in the U.S. alone and has been a rare bright spot for the music business in these dire times (well, it and Taylor Swift albums).

Compared with Taylor, the "New Moon" soundtrack — which was rush-released on Friday (October 16) to combat early leaks — boasts contributions from the likes of Thom Yorke, Lykke Li and Grizzly Bear (not to mention a first single from Death Cab For Cutie), is pretty dark. It is, as I wrote earlier this week "Music for the masses — or at least the masses who wear glasses and own record players and bought tickets to the Pavement reunion."

Indeed, music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas has compiled what many are calling the indie album of the year, and it's hard to argue with that claim.

Opening with a pair of straightforward jangly/jittery indie tunes, Death Cab's "Meet Me On the Equinox," (which, if you are alive, you've heard by now) and Band of Skulls' "My Friends," the "New Moon" soundtrack quickly downshifts with Thom Yorke's buzzing "Hearing Damage" and Lykke Li's ethereal "Possibility," two thoroughly angsty, artfully sparse standouts that would seem out of place, if not for the murky waters that follow.

The Killers channel Lou Reed on the somber "A White Demon Love Song," which slowly builds to a minor crescendo (and one seriously slippery) guitar solo. Singer/songwriter Anya Marina gets all breathy on "Satellite Heart" and indie icons Bon Iver and St. Vincent do what they do best — churchly, ghostly stuff — on "Rosyln."

The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club do their dark and windswept best with "Done All Wrong," Grizzly Bear's "Slow Life" is hazy, dreamy atmospheric pop and the Editors' "No Sound But the Wind" is a piano-laden ballad buoyed by frontman Tom Smith's brooding baritone.

Of course, there are a few moments of light scattered throughout the darkness. "Twilight" faves Muse contribute a remixed version of "I Belong To You" (the original can be found on their just-released album The Resistance) and it's very much a Muse tune, all stadium-sized vocals and fist-pumping guitars. The Hurricane Bells' "Monster" surges along on a super-skuzzed guitar line, Sea Wolf's "The Violet Hour" is classic swoony indie-pop and OK Go chime in with "Shooting the Moon," which, with its timpani punch and oddball sound effects, is an unexpected highlight, sounding very much like a mid-decade Flaming Lips' cast-off.

All in all, it's a very fine soundtrack. But it's also a decidedly left-of-center one, full of minor-key contributions from comparatively left-field artists. Here's to hoping it introduces those artists to millions of new and rabid fans ...

Early last November, weeks before Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart introduced the world to "Twilight" movie madness, the film's soundtrack shot straight to the top of the Billboard albums chart. After conquering bookstores and on its way to a $70 million opening weekend at theaters, "Twilight" had showed it could rock your iPod too.

Fast-forward a year, and it's set to happen again. Little more than a month before "New Moon" premieres, the movie's soundtrack is looking to make a splash when it drops Friday (October 16). MTV News has been mapping the universe of "New Moon" music for months — which bands made the cut, which bands didn't, what the lucky few had to say about being selected — and we've gathered all our reporting together so you will know everything there is to know about the movie's tunes, in MTV's "New Moon" soundtrack cheat sheet:

The First Soundtrack
News about the original "Twilight" soundtrack started to trickle out as early as April 2008, when MTV News visited the movie's Oregon set and reported that to the disc. That summer at Comic-Con, director Catherine Hardwicke confirmed the info, saying he'd composed three songs. While only one RPattz track, "Never Think," made the cut, the Brit actor was joined on the soundtrack by Muse, Paramore, Perry Farrell and Linkin Park, among others.

" 'Twilight' really caught my attention and held it," Paramore's Hayley Williams told MTV News that September. "I'm really excited to see the book adapted to film and excited that our band gets to be a part of the phenomenon."

The soundtrack ended up selling 164,700 its first week on its way to achieving double-platinum status.

Collecting the 'New Moon' Sounds
Which bands would get the call for the soundtrack sequel? For months, there was a whole lot of speculation without much in the way of solid answers. Coldplay, Kelly Clarkson, Thom Yorke and the Kings of Leon were among the names floated early on. The first verified news came in August, when MTV News revealed that Death Cab for Cutie had secured the soundtrack's first single with their tune "Meet Me on the Equinox." We then premiered the song during VMA weekend.

After weeks of guesswork and insider leaks, "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer unveiled the full track list on her Web site September 21. The artists and bands included Muse, the Killers, Thom Yorke, Lykke Li and OK Go.

The Artists Speak
Ever since the lineup went public, MTV News has been hitting up these musicians for their thoughts on joining the "Twilight" universe and the inside word about the songs they've contributed.

"We were all really excited to be asked to write for it, because it had become such a massive phenomenon," Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard said. "We wrote and recorded the song and turned it in, and you hoped the people deemed it worthy."

It was indeed deemed worthy, as was the track recorded by Bon Iver and St. Vincent called "Rosyln." "I think there's something vampirey and creepy about the two of us singing together," said St. Vincent, whose real name is Annie Clark. "It's a simple, stripped-down kind of song. It's really elegant and beautiful."

Swedish singer Lykke Li revealed that she caught an early viewing of "New Moon," sat down at the piano and composed "Possibility." "It's almost like a fever haze," she explained. "It's very repetitive, like a mood you go into. ... The lyrics are like, 'When you walk, you walk like a thief with blood on your hands, because I die when you leave me.' "

Returning for the second "Twilight" soundtrack, Muse said they were thankful for the increased exposure. "I think our music has reached out to whole loads of new people that haven't heard us before," drummer Dominic Howard said. "It's great to know that people are discovering our music. It's a nice side project to be involved in."

The Vampire Future
The "Twilight" future is actually arriving a bit early this year — four days, to be exact — after the soundtrack release date was shifted from October 20 to October 16. But what comes next? "Eclipse," the third of the franchise films, is in the midst of shooting in Vancouver. Which musicians might make it onto that soundtrack?

Muse have hinted that the band will be contributing music yet again to the franchise. "We might even do something for the third one," Howard told us. "How about that for a scoop?"

But for now, it's all just speculation. And here's some more: Jackson Rathbone, who plays vampire Jasper Cullen, leads a band called 100 Monkeys, which is providing the soundtrack and score for his upcoming movie "Girlfriend." Could this mean that Rathbone might show up on "Eclipse," as Pattinson did on "Twilight"?

"We'd love it," Rathbone told MTV News in June. "[But] we're not really pushing for it. It's one of those things where if they want to put our song on the album, I'm not going to complain."

Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" wasn't the most likely choice for the first single off the "New Moon" soundtrack, but in a lot of ways, it was the best choice.

Seems they know a thing or two about the central themes of the whole "Twilight" series: love and loss. They've sort of made a career out of documenting both.

"I think everyone was looking for that next big series after 'Harry Potter,' and that's when I first started hearing about the 'Twilight' series," DCFC bassist Nick Harmer said. "And at first, I was drawn to the books because of the vampires and werewolves, but if you stripped all of that out, you have a good romance novel. It's a love story. And that I think really ties into a lot of the material we write as a band."

As luck — or perhaps fate — would have it, they were approached to write a song for "New Moon." And while some Death Cab fans might've scratched their heads when they heard the news, the guys in the band knew this was a perfect fit. And a rather unique challenge.

"We were all really excited to be asked to write for it, because it had become such a massive phenomenon," DCFC frontman Ben Gibbard said. "We wrote and recorded the song and turned it in, and you hoped the people deemed it worthy."

"The arc of the song and the ... way the lyrics unfold over the three-and-a-half minutes," guitarist Chris Walla added. "It's a really nice parallel for 'New Moon.' "

And so, the song was accepted and then tapped as the first single off the soundtrack, which hits stores Friday. A week after finding out their song would be on the soundtrack, DCFC were whisked away to a mansion outside of Toronto to shoot the video for the single. It all happened that fast, and while most bands probably would've wilted under the pressure, Death Cab knew what an opportunity they had here — not just for some exposure but to be a part of something much bigger than any of them.

"It's like the soundtrack is not only part of the film, but it's part of your life," drummer Jason McGerr said. "So I'm super-excited to be a part of this ... we all are."

So here's the thing about vampires: I always thought they had terrible taste in music.

This is mostly because the only vampires I knew were the kids in drama club who wore ruffled shirts and crushed-velvet capes and smoked clove cigarettes behind the 7-Eleven off Wekiva Springs Road. They were very pale and smelled like patchouli and listened to Fields of the Nephilim and "dark cabaret" and "ethereal wave" and crap like that. There were goblets. Weathered copies of "Call of Cthulhu." Ankhs. I seem to remember the occasional Alien Sex Fiend T-shirt too.

Anyway, I always thought they were pretty ridiculous (something about black PVC dresses and Slurpees doesn't seem right), and that went doubly for their music, which seemed downright cartoonish to me. And though today, I realize that, A) those kids were not actually vampires but goths — or some suburbanized, Central Florida approximation thereof — and B) Bauhaus actually made a good record or two, I still can't shake my initial prejudices. I hate vampires, and I hate vampire music.

Stephenie Meyer and Alexandra Patsavas are trying to change that. I think they might actually succeed too.

You are probably familiar with both of them. Meyer is, of course, the author of the fang-tastic "Twilight" series. Patsavas is the music supervisor responsible for putting most of your favorite bands on TV shows over the past decade. They have joined forces on the soundtrack for "New Moon," which might be the best collection of vampire music ever released — mostly because none of it is actually vampire music.

Rather, the "New Moon" soundtrack (which will be released on Friday) is made up almost entirely of indie-rock acts, including songs by Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Lykke Li and Thom-Freaking-Yorke (and the Killers too). There is nary a cape or clove in site. Sure, some of the stuff — OK, most — is still dark (perhaps Patsavas' instructions were to "tone it down" or "up the murk"), but the Sisters of Mercy it ain't. This is scruffy, beard-scratching music. The kind of stuff I would actually listen to!

I am not sure how vampires are taking this, but I can imagine there is much displeasure in sepulchers and 7-Eleven parking lots around the world. Whether they intended or not, Meyer and Patsavas have forever changed the game. They have brought vampire music to the masses — or at least the masses who wear glasses and own record players and bought tickets to the Pavement reunion.

And, yes, I know "New Moon" has about as much to do with vampire noir as "90210" has to do with the city of Beverly Hills (and I mean that in whatever way you want to take it), but clearly, something has happened here. I'm not sure if it's even a good thing, but for the first time in my life, there is a chance that I will be listening to the same thing on my iPod as my (not so) friendly neighborhood goth. The "New Moon" soundtrack has bridged the divide. It has ended prejudices by reinventing vampire rock as the kind of stuff you'd read about on music blogs.

Does it matter that nothing on the soundtrack could even charitably be described as "vampirish" or "gothic" or even "spooky?" (Aside from OK Go — those dudes are evil.) I don't think so. We live in fractured times, where authenticity is akin to distressed denim and musical genres are as wobbly as Jenga towers. If I want to consider myself a vampire, who's to say I'm wrong? I may be allergic to patchouli, and I do not possess an unslakable thirst for blood, but according to Meyer and Patsavas, I am now officially a member of the undead. Or at least we have the same record collections.

And that's pretty spooky, when you think about it. Vampire rock is accessible now, which should do wonders for Slurpee sales — and another Bauhaus reunion. Dracula is psyched. You should be too.

'New Moon' Soundtrack Release Date Pushed Up To Friday

You hear a lot about albums being pushed back for a bit of track tweaking or new recording, but unless a CD leaks early online, you rarely see release dates for major CDs pushed forward.

But when you're dealing with anything "Twilight"-related, the old rules don't apply. According to a press release issued on Tuesday (October 13), due to "overwhelming and unprecedented" demand, the release date for the soundtrack to "New Moon" is being pushed up by four days from its original October 20 release to this Friday, October 16.

That means the disc will be in stores more than a full month before "New Moon" hits screens on November 20. The heat on the soundtrack has carefully been stoked by a series of slow reveals of the goods, beginning with the unveiling of the Death Cab for Cutie contribution, "Meet Me on the Equinox," during last month's VMAs, followed by the song's video premiere last week.

The full lineup of the soundtrack was released last month, boasting such household names as Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse, the Killers, OK Go, Grizzly Bear and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and lesser-known acts such as Band of Skulls, Lykke Li, Anya Marina, Bon Iver with St. Vincent, Hurricane Bells, Sea Wolf and the Editors. And then, just this last week, 30-second clips of all of the songs appeared online on the UK Amazon.com site.

Read our interviews with Lykke Li and OK Go about their connection to the "Twilight" saga, and check back with MTV News all week long for more stories about the "New Moon" soundtrack.
