It took more than three years, a handful of different studio locales and a couple of producers to bring the Deftones' fifth studio offering to life. And for the band and its fans, Halloween couldn't come soon enough.

On that day, the Sacramento, California, rockers' Saturday Night Wrist lands in record shops — and the band's planning a 26-date U.S. headlining run starting October 26 in Oklahoma City. Deadsy, who spent much of this summer with the 'Tones on Korn's revived Family Values Tour (see "Korn Resurrect Family Values Tour With Deftones, Stone Sour"), have been tapped as the trek's openers. The Deftones plan to tour in support of the disc for the next two years.

According to frontman Chino Moreno, the Deftones didn't intend to take their time with Wrist, "but it just so happened it took that long. And it's a relief to have it done. It was a hard record to make. Every record that we make, it gets harder and harder for us, because we try not to repeat what we've done before or stick to certain formulas. And in order to do that, we have to go through a lot of trial-and-error stuff, which can be time-consuming."

Moreno said the band's fans have come to expect a certain quality from his band, so the Deftones wanted to make sure Wrist would live up to the hype (see "Why Is The New Deftones Album Taking So Long?").

"Our fans are very critical, which is the way we all are," he said. "We feel like, in anything in life, what we put into it is what we get out of it."

Fans have been getting a taste of the LP through the band's MySpace page, where the Deftones have posted a track called "Rapture" as well as "Hole in the Earth," the first single from Saturday Night Wrist, a title inspired by an injury one of Moreno's friends sustained (she was diagnosed as having "Saturday night palsy," a compression of the radial nerve that occurs when intoxicated people sleep with their arm draped over a chair or with someone sleeping on their arm).

" 'Hole in the Earth' was probably the first song I put lyrics on for the record, and the song is kind of in reference to the turmoil we were going through making the record," Moreno said. He told MTV News in April the band nearly called it quits halfway through the recording process (see "Deftones Serve Up 'Buffalo' With System Singer On New Disc"). "We almost gave up on it. It was really difficult and communication within the band wasn't that good, and I had another project," an ambient outfit called Team Sleep, "I was going to do. Between us, the bandmembers, it was a rough time, and the song addresses that."

Moreno also commented on the death of Andy Richardson, a 30-year-old man who was beaten in the mosh pit at the August 1 stop of Family Values in Atlanta. Police have charged 24-year-old Michael Scott Axley with Richardson's murder (see "Man Charged With Murder For Beating Death At Korn Concert").

"It was meaningless and sad and stupid that there are people who're that retarded and do senseless things," he said. "It was saddening to hear that someone would die at our performance. We're there to have fun and for everyone else to have fun. It's depressing. I don't think you can blame it on the music, because there are always some people who don't think before they act, and they have to bring it down for a lot of people."

Deftones tour dates, according to the band's publicist:

While Moby may not have a fan or a friend in Eminem, the electro-rocker does have plenty of people eager for his first new material in three years. 18, already gaining popularity from the single "We Are All Made of Stars" and its celebrity-infused video, hits shelves this week.

In the growing trend of artists issuing remix albums, P. Diddy weighs in this week with his own requisitely boastful We Invented the Remix. The LP features tracks by Ashanti, Snoop, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and Ludacris.

Deadsy's long-hibernating Commencement finally sees the light of day this week, while Weezer's Maladroit premieres almost exactly a year after their Green Album, proving that, in more ways than one, they're more adept than they give themselves credit for.

Puddle of Mudd and Deadsy will open the first leg of Korn's U.S. tour.

The bands are set to prime the ears of domestic crowds for their first dose of live Korn in nearly two years beginning June 20 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, according to Korn's publicist. The nü-metal quintet, whose last trek was in 2000 to support its fourth album, Issues, is set to release its new LP, Untouchables, on June 11.

While most of the dates and cities on the tour's itinerary have been confirmed for a month (see "Korn Plot Summer Tour"), only a handful of venues have been booked, among them the First Union Arena for the tour's kickoff, New York's Madison Square Garden on June 23 and the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, on July 9.

Dates through August 1 are expected to be added to the first leg of what's being called the Tour With No Name. A second leg, lasting roughly six weeks, is being assembled.

Puddle of Mudd will join the tour upon the completion of their headlining jaunt May 1 in Carbondale, Illinois, and following the handful of radio festivals they have scheduled until May 18.

Deadsy — the arty, goth quartet fronted by P. Exeter Blue I (a.k.a. Elijah Blue), who is the son of Cher and Gregg Allman — will use the trek to promote their much-delayed Commencement, due May 14. Korn's Jonathan Davis contributes vocals to the album's first single, "The Key to Gramercy Park" (see "Korn's Jonathan Davis Sings on Deadsy Track").

Deadsy had recorded an earlier version of the album in 1999, though it — along with a nine-song, self-titled debut from 1996 — never saw the light of day.

Fred Durst is the common thread woven through the tour, as the frontman for Limp Bizkit — a band which got its big break with help from Korn — recently directed the videos for both openers' latest singles (see "Deadsy Hold Their Breath For Durst-Directed Video").

In other Korn news, the film score to "Queen of the Damned," which was composed by Jonathan Davis, will be released as an LP this summer.

Any other director and Deadsy probably would've walked off the set. For friend Fred Durst, however, the goth rockers were willing to do anything for their debut video, even choke on carbon dioxide for a few hours.

"I laid down in it for 10 seconds and my throat dried up and I was feeling nauseous," Durst said, pointing to a pool of CO2. "These guys have been in it for three hours. They have been doing it over and over again. This is their first video and they are seriously taking a beating."

What did Deadsy singer P. Exeter Blue I (a.k.a. Elijah Blue, son of Cher and Gregg Allman) think of the experience? "It's like being trapped in the back of a station wagon in someone's garage."

Not that Durst is entirely to blame. He was simply trying to capture Blue's vision for the clip for "The Key to Gramercy Park," which features additional vocals from Jonathan Davis (see "Korn's Jonathan Davis Sings On Deadsy Track").

"I've got a feeling Elijah will be directing his own videos," Durst said, taking a break at Hayvenhurst Studios in Van Nuys, California ("where they used to do porno movies," according to the Limp Bizkit singer). "I'm just here so he can have as much hands-on as he wants to with the directing and with the whole process. He is that type of guy — like a sponge, he will just soak it up."

"The Key to Gramercy Park" is the lead single from Deadsy's much delayed proper first album, Commencement, due May 14 on DreamWorks. (The band's first recording and an earlier version of Commencement were both shelved due to record label issues.)

Although the haunting concept for the video, which finds each member of the band playing in front of a specific color and graphic and features drastic close-ups and fade-outs, is ambitiously artistic, Blue described it as a simple introduction to the much deeper Deadsy.

"The graphic art video is a good way to frame us," Blue said, already sounding like a director. "We feel that it is OK to kind of start off like this, because the video has sort of a remedial context to its visuals. It kind of explains a little bit about the band."

"The Key to Gramercy Park" happens to be one of the more clear-cut songs on Commencement, Blue explained. "It is kind of the Trojan horse of the record. We are not trying to go into the music scene with something that is asking too much of people. We feel like this is simply a good rock jam. It's very impressionistic. It's very powerful and simply in your face."

Durst, who just finished directing a video for Puddle of Mudd's "Drift and Die," was the natural choice to direct the clip because he has supported Deadsy — Blue, guitarist Carlton Megalodon, bassist Creature, drummer Alec Püre and keyboardist Dr. Nner — for so long.

"I heard part of their album before I even made my first album — they've been working on it that long — and I just fell in love with it," Durst said. "I got a copy of the record and I became obsessed with it. It's so inspiring. It's so emotional. It's so heavy. It's so hypnotic. It's something that feels like the past, but somehow a glimpse into the future at the same time. They have a visual. They have depth. They have everything it takes to build a subculture."

Durst described Deadsy as a band that you either get or don't get. "If it goes over your head or if it doesn't even make you curious to look deeper, you probably shouldn't be a part of their subculture. You should probably remain the simple human being you are."

Commencement track list, according to DreamWorks:

"The Key to Gramercy Park"

"Winners"

"Brand New Love"

"Mansion World"

"Lake Waramaug"

"The Elements"

"Flowing Glower"

"Future Years"

"She Likes Big Words"

"Cruella"

"Seagulls (The Macroprosopus)"

"Le Cirque En Rose (Obsolescence)"

"Tom Sawyer"

"Commencement"

Durst, Aguilera, Stefani Hope To Open People's Eyes With 'What's Going On' Videos

CULVER CITY, California — Christina Aguilera's golden locks, Fred Durst's backward ball cap, Gwen Stefani's rainbow makeup and Justin Timberlake's freshly grown peach fuzz took a back seat Thursday to a look unprecedented even in popular music — blindfolds.

"I feel like I'm playing pin the tail on the donkey," Aguilera quipped in between takes during the first day of shooting proper videos for three all-star remakes of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On."

Many of the artists who contributed to the project — from Ja Rule to Staind's Aaron Lewis to Alicia Keys — will don blindfolds for the video shoot, which heads to New York on Saturday and is scheduled to wrap by the end of the weekend.

The videos will feature the artists removing the blindfolds, which are imprinted with such labels as "Woman," "Homosexual" and "Muslim," while they sing their parts of the song.

Most of the shots are close-ups, though director Jake Scott, known for such moving videos as R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" and Erykah Badu's "Didn't Cha Know," filmed Aguilera and Stefani dancing from a distance on Thursday.

The new clips for "What's Going On" — the "Main Mix," Jermaine Dupri's "R&B Mix" and Mick G's "Adult Contemporary Mix" — will replace the current version, which was put together by MTV and blends news footage from the September 11 terrorist attacks with scenes from the recording sessions.

"The video out now just felt like a natural thing to do, and I am glad MTV did it," Timberlake said outside his dressing room, where he was dancing to "What It's Like to Be Me," the new track he co-wrote and co-produced for his girlfriend, Britney Spears. "This is an actual video — you can come up with a scenario that means something. You can put a visual with the cause you are singing about. ... I think people will get the message."

The blindfolds in the videos are meant to symbolize how people are blind to dealing with issues like racism, sexism, homophobia and religion and need to open their eyes, a spokesperson for the project said. The theme ties in with the lyrics to Gaye's "What's Going On," a #2 hit in 1971.

The original remake by the Bono-led Artists Against AIDS Worldwide will be released October 30 on a benefit CD alongside a growing number of alternate versions now totaling nine. Half of the proceeds will go to the Global AIDS Alliance, while the remainder will go to the United Way's September 11 Fund.

Dupri produced the main remake, and his slower R&B version features Monica, Jagged Edge and many of the artists who participated in the initial recording sessions, which took place prior to the terrorist attacks. Electronic music gurus Moby and Junior Sanchez, both New York natives, did dance remixes, while Bono brought in Train singer Pat Monahan and others for a contemporary mix.

Limp Bizkit's Durst recently finished his "Reality Check Mix" that includes vocals by Bono, Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland, Perry Farrell, Puddle of Mudd's Wes Scantlin and Deadsy's Elijah Blue, along with music from Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch and Bizkit rhythm section John Otto and Sam Rivers.

"I think it's going to touch a lot of people who will look over and not be touched by the versions already done," Durst said of his version. "If you think we're doing a 'We Are the World' tribute to Marvin Gaye, you're going to be surprised. We changed some of the words I thought needed to be changed. It's so many different styles of music put into one track. It's some serious past and present."

Added Timberlake: "Not everyone listens to the same things these days, and I think it's great they had Fred do a version. It's great they didn't break it up before the first version went to air, though, to show the unity and how so many artists from different genres came together. Now we can break it up."

Marvin Gaye III and Nona Gaye, Marvin's children, also filmed scenes for the videos on Thursday, but noticeably absent was Bono. Still, his presence was felt by the artists and organizers who sang his praises. Stefani, former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes, Timberlake and Durst all beamed at memories of their phone calls from the U2 frontman.

Leigh Blake, founder of Artists Against AIDS Worldwide and the person who dreamed up the "What's Going On" project, said she never would have done the remake without Bono.

"Bono puts absolutely all of his great big huge heart into what we're doing. ... He really believes in using that platform to do good," said Blake, who also co-founded the Red Hot Organization, which raises money for AIDS research.

The money raised from "What's Going On" for the fight against AIDS will go to medicine, health education and simple medical care in Africa, she said.

"One child dies every minute there, and they don't have to," Blake said. "They are dying from pneumonia, diarrhea and other complications of being born HIV-positive. Infected women are breastfeeding their children because they don't have the money to buy formula. Who have we become if we grownups can't take care of these children we are responsible for?"

For more information on and audience reaction to the attacks, including tips on how you can help, see "9.11.01: Moving Forward."

Taking a break from work on Korn's fifth album, singer Jonathan Davis sang on a track slated for Deadsy's second CD. Davis recorded his vocal part for the song, tentatively titled "Key to Gramercy Park," at A&M Studios in Los Angeles on July 22, according to his publicist.

The new album from Deadsy — singer P. Exeter Blue I (a.k.a. Elijah Blue, son of Cher and Gregg Allman), synth player Dr. Nner (Renn Hawkey), bassist The Beast Craig (Craig Riker), drummer Alec Püre (Alec Puro) and guitarist Carlton Megalodon — is due early next year on Korn's Elementree imprint in association with DreamWorks, according to a DreamWorks spokesperson.

A 1999 version of the album, called Commencement, was left in limbo when Sire Records' distribution deal with Warner Bros. dissolved and the band was dropped from the label. The neo-Goth rockers are re-recording and retooling a few tracks for the updated version with co-producers Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Drowning Pool) and Josh Abraham (Limp Bizkit, Crazy Town), according to their publicist.

This isn't the first Davis-Deadsy collaboration — the Korn frontman also lent his pipes to "Sleepy Hollow" on Deadsy's self-titled debut (1997).

Korn, meanwhile, continue to work with producer Michael Beinhorn on more disturbing dirges for their follow-up to 1999's Issues.
