"[Atlanta goalie] Kari Lehtonen actually has my picture on the back of his helmet," Jon wrote in a recent post. "We always go in the locker room to say 'what's up' to him before a game." Jon admits that he hasn't been following the Thrashers' every move this season, but he's tuning back in for the playoffs — and hopes to see the team bring the Stanley Cup to ATL.

M-1 of Dead Prez appeared on Fox News' "Your World With Neil Cavuto" on Friday afternoon to debate hip-hop's role in the Don Imus scandal. The political-minded MC said drawing a parallel between rap lyrics and the racially insensitive remarks that cost Imus his job is like "comparing apples and oranges." Cavuto countered, "If Imus uses the expression and then you use the expression, you've both said 'ho,' " but M-1 noted that he didn't use the word "ho" in his lyrics. The rapper added that there's "something wrong" with offensive language being used whether it's by Imus or in hip-hop, but asserted that there is a difference between Imus' words and rap lyrics due to the "historical relationship of oppression" between black and white Americans. ...

Barry Gibb, the former Bee Gee who in 2006 bought the Johnny Cash Tennessee house that burned down last week, says he and his wife will rebuild a new home nearby. The Village People's policeman is off the hook, AP reports. Victor Willis was arrested last month after his girlfriend accused him of choking and threatening her. "We are excited about bringing Shia into our Indy family," Spielberg said in a post on IndianaJones.com. The announcement ends weeks of "Will he or won't he?" speculation, much of it fueled by LaBeouf himself. The 20-year-old "Disturbia" star had previously denied his involvement when news of the casting first leaked and recently told MTV News, "I haven't been presented with the idea. I haven't been approached." In the Friday post on IndianaJones.com, LaBeouf said, "I was hoping the rumors were true, so I couldn't be more thrilled. To be cast in an Indiana Jones film is like grabbing the brass ring and holding on for the ride. I can't wait to take that giant step in front of the Indy cameras." "Indiana Jones 4" will be released worldwide May 22, 2008. ...

Limp haven't toured the States since 2003. "Imagine that me and Wes could work things out together and be a band again, friends again," Durst wrote in the post. "We had so many wonderful times. I am proud to say that I have learned so much from my mistakes and it has taken a long time to evolve to this place where I finally let myself be healed. Without Limp Bizkit, I would have never gotten here. Without Wes, I wouldn't know what it is like to work with the best." ...

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy has spoken out against the Live Earth gigs, saying that it might be hypocritical to stage the event, aimed at raising climate awareness worldwide, when it could have an adverse affect on the climate. "Private jets for climate change, not sure about it, that seems to be a bit on edge really," he told the BBC. Ashok Sinah, a director of Stop Climate Chaos, responded to defend. "They have to reduce carbon emissions, we have to reduce carbon emissions, and in just the same way that we may look at a pop star and say, 'You use more carbon than I do,' people from Africa could look at us and think, 'We don't go flying around everywhere.' I have met people in Africa who haven't even made a phone call, let alone get on a plane." Sinah also noted that the concerts were just the beginning of a larger overall campaign. "We have got to make sure that the people that come to us post-concert are actively engaged and get involved in the campaign." ...

The charges stem from a December arrest in which police claim he was found in possession of heroin and an anti-anxiety drug prescribed to someone else and was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. ... Heather Locklear's second rock marriage has officially ended. The actress' divorce from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora was finalized Wednesday, according to an AP report. She filed for divorce from Sambora in February 2006 after 11 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.

Chappelle Throwing A Block Party With Kanye, Lauryn, Others

There's nothing funny about Dave Chappelle's latest project. In fact, it's downright ambitious.

On September 18, the comedian will celebrate the music and culture of New York by throwing the Dave Chappelle Block Party, an old-fashioned neighborhood jam that'll include musical performances from an all-star lineup of his favorite hip-hop and R&B artists. Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Talib Kweli, the Roots, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Common and Dead Prez and are slated to take part, with Chappelle serving as master of ceremonies for the event.

"I'm glad to be a part of it. Dave just called me and broke it down," said Mos Def. "A lot of my friends and heroes are going to be there. It's very inspiring."

The party will be shot by acclaimed director Michel Gondry for a potential DVD release. Chappelle is hoping to re-create the vibe of Wattstax, a 1972 concert and subsequent film set in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles that featured performances by funk, soul and gospel artists like Isaac Hayes and the Bar-Kays.

Sources say Chappelle conceived the project by himself and is funding it out of his own pocket. He has sworn everyone involved in the project to secrecy on its location and other details of the event. Fans who register online are being bussed to a secret location in Brooklyn from another secret location elsewhere in the city. The concert is expected to take place all day.

"If all the surprises come through, this cannot be missed," said Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of the Roots, who will serve as the event's musical director.

Stic.man, from the rap duo Dead Prez, was arrested for simple assault Sunday at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

According to a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department, the MC (otherwise known as Clayton Gavin) was arrested for causing a disturbance aboard a United Airlines flight — before the plane had even left the terminal. He continued to use a Walkman or similar electronic device after a flight attendant asked him to put it away.

Dead Prez's DJ Umi Bem Niilampti and another rapper, D-Don (a.k.a. Harris DeJesus), were arrested on the same charge.

Music emanating from at least one of the men's headphones was audible to other passengers, according to the police report. When they refused to remove the headphones after a flight attendant asked them to do so, a heated discussion ensued. The men were asked to leave the plane but did not, so the other passengers deplaned and police entered the cabin.

After the men were removed, the passengers re-boarded the plane and the flight continued on to its destination in New York.

All three men are scheduled to appear in misdemeanor court May 5. Dead Prez's label rep did not return calls by press time.

Janet Jackson's name hasn't been in the papers for a while, so we'll throw her a bone and mention that her new album, Damita Jo, arrives Tuesday, featuring the flirty first single "Just a Little While." Now, if only there was something she could do to get some publicity ...

Moving on, DJ Kay Slay’s The Streetsweeper Vol. 2: The Pain From the Game features songs by Eminem, 50 Cent, Cam'ron, Lil' Jon, David Banner, LL Cool J, Ghostface Killah and Scarface. And there's still more mixtape news: The first entry in The Trip, a new series of mix CDs compiled by guest musicians, is put together by Dirty Vegas, the group best-known for the dance single "Days Go By." The album includes U2's "Even Better Than the Real Thing," Tears for Fears' "Sowing the Seeds of Love," Run-DMC's "Walk This Way," Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On."

Music From "The O.C.": Mix 1 features the TV show's theme song, "California" by Phantom Planet, as well as "Move On" by Jet, "Caught by the River" by Doves and "The Way We Get By" by Spoon. New Kids on the Block's lead hottie Jordan Knight assembles the Kids' greatest hits on NKOTB: The Remix Album. It's got "the right stuff," including "Hangin' Tough," "Please Don't Go Girl," "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" and "Step by Step." Also this week, Menudo graduate Robi Rosa returns to the game with Mad Love.

Aerosmith's Honkin' on Bobo is a covers album of blues standards by such artists as Muddy Waters, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and even Fleetwood Mac (with one exception: the group's own "The Grind"). And in other blues news, Eric Clapton releases Me & Mr. Johnson, an album that covers bluesman Robert Johnson's songs.

J-Kwon makes the scene with Hood Hop, Dead Prez remain RBG: Revolutionary but Gangsta and Lil' Flip says U Gotta Feel Me. Meanwhile, Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live at Philharmonic Hall drops alongside the Final Straw, Snow Patrol's latest LP.

The third studio outing is typically difficult for established artists who often struggle between maintaining their fanbase and displaying artistic growth. Instead of penning a new batch of originals, Mandy Moore accomplishes both goals with Coverage, an album of cover songs. But don't expect a karaoke-friendly collection of instantly recognizable pop hits. In an effort to break out of her teen-pop mold, Moore has recorded songs that will be more familiar to viewers of VH1 than MTV. Tracks include Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow," Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends?," and Joe Jackson's "Breaking Us in Two." The album also features passionate renditions of songs by Joan Armatrading, Elton John, XTC and the Waterboys.

The second album by Dead Prez, Get Free or Die Tryin,' is a not-so-subtle reference to 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' and it illustrates where the Florida rap duo's priorities lie. Like Public Enemy, D.P. are as political as they are musical, and express their inflammatory views in songs like "F--- the Law," "Scared to Die," and "Last Day Reloaded," which features the rap crew Onyx.

Until now, Loon has been best known for backing P. Diddy, Usher, 3LW and Foxy Brown. This week, the rapper releases his full-length, self-titled debut. The album features guest performances by Diddy, Missy Elliott and Carl Thomas, which could help turn the suave rapper from an in-demand backing musician into a full-fledged star.

Where were their heads at when Basement Jaxx recruited 'NSYNC's JC Chasez to guest on Kish Kash? Clearly, they wanted to do something different, and that desire shines through on the disc, which is less dance-house than their previous efforts and more based in a percussive funk that owes heavily to Prince. Other guests include Siouxsie Sioux and Dizzee Rascal.

Several hot indie rock bands are dropping noteworthy albums this week. The act with the highest profile is the Rapture, whose second full album, Echoes, is a feast of crashing rhythms, dirty disco beats, engaging electronic melodies and vocals reminiscent of the Cure's Robert Smith. The debut album by the Canadian band the Stills, Logic Will Break Your Heart, is equally affecting, combining the emotional resonance of the Smiths with the pop songcraft of Echo & the Bunnymen. And the second disc by Albuquerque's the Shins, Chutes Too Narrow, is a sunnier offering that blends winsome pop guitars with plaintive vocals.

For those who like much, much more technical proficiency, veteran Canadian power trio Rush will release their fourth live album, Rush in Rio, in the form of a triple-CD set that captures the final night of the band's Vapor Trails tour before a crowd of 40,000.

Here's what else you have to choose from.

The 411: Technically, it's been three years since Dead Prez released an official album, the controversial but lauded Get Free. But the duo of M-1 and Sticman have been anything but stagnant, putting out the mixtape LP Turn Off the Radio last year and gearing to drop their follow-up on October 27.

"Actually, we call it a mixtape as a marketing strategy," the group's M-1 said about his latest project. "We're letting people know that we're going to be consistently dropping music. [The mixtape] is a mix of our ideas and our crew, the People's Army. We call it a mixtape, but for all intents and purposes, it's a full album.

"We're basically motivated by a mind state and a love for 50 Cent's album, how it hit the community the way it did," he continued about playing off of 50's Get Rich or Die Tryin' title. "Understand that we too are soldiers, soldiers for the people."

Almost prophetically, the first song released off the mixtape is called "F--- the Law" and finds the "Revolutionary But Gangsta" rap clan striking back at abusive boys in blue. In real life, the group is getting ready to file a lawsuit against the NYPD for police brutality. A couple of weeks ago in Brooklyn, the two say, they were roughed up by the police for no reason.

"We knew what was going to go down," M-1 said about allegedly getting mistreated by the authorities after the record dropped. "It happened to me two years ago, one block from where the police f---ed with us a month go."

Later in the mixtape, the DPs team with another group that knows a few things about bumping heads with the law, Onyx. The two factions collaborate for an updated version of the Queens trio's powerfully poetic "Last Dayz," from the 1995 LP All We Got Iz Us, where they rhymed about the angst of ghetto warfare and frustration with the police and government.

"We did that [song] using the old 'Last Dayz' beat," M explained. "Fredro, Sonny Caeser and Sticky re-laid their verses. They revamped them. We love 'Last Dayz.' That sh-- was crazy; they made you feel what they was talking about. It talked about so much of what we been on. We came in the game influenced by records like that. The jewel of the whole [new] song is with Sticky's last verse."

Dead Prez already have plans to put out their next mixtape, tentatively titled The Game or the Gospel, in December. If negotiations go right with Columbia Records, the group's next official LP, Revolutionary But Gangsta, will be released sometime in 2004. The group recorded with peers like Jay-Z, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Erykah Badu for the album, but the project has been on the shelf because the group severed ties with Columbia.

Dead Prez said that Bad Boy, Shady Records, G-Unit Records and Roc-A-Fella are all trying to sign them to deals. They are looking to ink a contract somewhere by the end of the year.

"I'm seeing a swing," M said of the direction of hip-hop. "People want reality. What we're doing is no different from what Ice Cube was doing or what [Public Enemy] was doing."

As part of their deal with Landspeed Records, Get Free or Die Tryin': Turn Off the Radio: the Mixtape, Vol. 2 will be released to stores on October 27.

Hometown: Dallas

Joints to check for: "Bump It," "Danger," "Love of My Life Worldwide" featuring Queen Latifah, Bahamadia and Angie Stone.

Previous mixtapes: None, but she does have a bunch of acclaimed LPs under her belt.

The 411: OK, there are no shout-outs, no scratching, no blends, and Ms. Badu isn't even a DJ. So how, you ask, does Erykah justify calling her new EP, Worldwide Underground, a mixtape? Well, there's the obvious answer — because she said so — but Andre 3000's ex does have some evidence to back her claim: Like some other mixtapes, the album doesn't have any real concept and the songs play into each other, going from groove to groove, in sequence, without breaking up. And a few of the tracks run really long, way past the standard three minutes and 30 seconds.

The longest track clocks in at over 10 minutes and is called "I Want You." On it, we find a love-struck E.B. frantically expressing her emotions. "I, I, I, I, I, I, I, want, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you," she cries before asking, "What we gonna do?" As the song progresses, Ms. Badu claims she's got it so bad that not even drinking holy water, fasting for 30 days or practicing yoga can help her.

As much as she's twisted up over her man, however, Badu is clearly more enthralled with hip-hop. As her alter ego, MC Apples, the singer turns rapper, flipping verses alongside Queen Latifah, Bahamadia and Angie Stone. "My name is apples and I'll rock your world," she rhymes with an old-school flow. "Worldwide, do your math/ 30, 26, 36 and a half/ I hope that you will re-a-lize/ I got the hazel eyes to make your nature rise."

Lenny Kravitz also guest stars on the EP, playing on "Back in the Day." There, the album's star longs for the simplicity of yesteryear. Meanwhile, Dead Prez give their militant two cents on the hustle game in "The Grind."

Badu's artistic instincts haven't impeded the grind of her record label, however. While she’s comfortable labeling the project a mixtape because of its feel, her label isn't peddling it on the street like one. You have to go to your local record store to cop Worldwide Underground just like a regular album.

Aside from the verses from her guests, Badu wrote the entire EP and produced the record with her production team, Freakquency.

DJs also have their say this week. DJs Green Lantern, Vlad and Dirty Harry just released 2Pac's Rap Phenomenon, a record that pieces together 'Pac's vocals from old material (see "Wave Of New Tupac Material Hitting Stores And Streets"). Then there's DJ Pudgee-P with his hodgepodge of street ditties on Riot Squad Part 3.

They may have valued P.E. and D.M.C. over Ph.D.s and B.A.s when they were in
school, but Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Mos Def, Fat Joe, Wu-Tang Clan, Ashanti and Dead
Prez have joined the protest against New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's
proposed $1 billion in education cuts.

On June 4, one day before the mayor makes his final budget proposal to the
city council, the rappers plan to gather at City Hall alongside Russell
Simmons, minister Benjamin Muhammad, Al Sharpton, "Sex and the City" star
Cynthia Nixon and thousands of students, teachers and parents to voice their
objection to Bloomberg's plans.

During the event, dubbed the Mobilization for Education, the performers are
expected to make brief speeches, a rally spokesperson said, adding that the
hip-hop community has such an active interest in the event because the
proposed cuts would have a devastating effect on inner-city schools.

"We are mobilizing the hip-hop community to join with the United Federation
of Teachers and the Alliance for Quality Education because education is a
vital issue for hip-hop," Simmons said in a statement. "I visit schools all
the time, and I'm tired of hearing about kids sharing books and having no
desks of their own. I'm tired of the debate of 'Who will manage the
schools?' when the real issue is 'Who will prioritize the funding of our
children's education?' The elite have abandoned the war on poverty and
education, and it's up to us, the hip-hop community, to stand up. No one
else will. Our elected officials have failed us."

In addition, Jay-Z, Sharpton, Nixon and Simmons have recorded public service
announcements that are airing on local hip-hop stations.

"On June 4 at 2:30 p.m.," Jay-Z says on one, "I want you to get up, walk out
of class and meet me at City Hall in protest of the more than $1 billion cut
from the school budget the city wants to make."

Others who have pledged their support to the campaign include Nas, the LOX,
Charli Baltimore, Lady May, Megahertz, Rah Digga, the Rev. Run and Chuck D.

Masta Ace Wants Hip-Hop Fans To Eat Their Veggies Too

Rapper hopes to bring message to the masses that there's more to life than ice, rims.
By Soren Baker

Even though rap dominates sales charts, radio and video play and has
infiltrated the fashion and film industries, some hip-hop artists
are less than pleased with the typically myopic, materialistic message of
many chart-topping songs.

"I feel like the average hip-hop fan is not well-rounded at all," said Masta
Ace, whose recently released Disposable Arts album makes keen, pointed
observations about the current state of hip-hop. "Their musical diet is not
a balanced one. It's a problem and it's unfortunate. There's nothing wrong
with having some fun on a given night — I have fun like the next man. But
it needs to be about more than that at the end of the day, but unfortunately
not enough of our people have figured that out yet. My job in this is to be
one of the providers of balance."

Indeed, the follow-up to 1995's Sittin' on Chrome exhibits the balance
that such hip-hop acts as KRS-One, Outkast, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Mystic
and the Coup provide. Disposable Arts contains several interwoven
storylines that include one in which Ace enrolls in IDA, the Institute of
Disposable Arts, where he studies hip-hop. Through skits, Ace's journey at
the school is detailed, while the songs feature Ace's signature brand of
clever phrasings, punchline-heavy lyrics, gripping tales of ghetto life and
insightful political commentary.

Greg Nice delivers the chorus on the festive hip-hop commentary "Don't
Understand," while the somber "Dear Diary" has Ace questioning his place in
hip-hop's pantheon. The latter is a rare hip-hop moment, one where an
artist portrays himself as vulnerable and confused. "Eh, yo, Ace/ Don't
tell me you thinking about a return," Ace raps on the cut, assuming the role
of his diary. "I'm kind of concerned/ When will you old cats ever learn?/ It's time to hang it up."

"It was self-analyzation," Ace said of "Dear Diary." "The lyrics on that
song are the way I feel some days when I wake up. 'Why are you even
considering making records anymore? Nobody's really checking for it
anymore. You're wasting your time. There's maybe 10 cats that are going to
buy your record.' I wake up sometimes and I feel that way. I'm being
honest about my feelings and maybe saying some stuff that people might be
saying."

Looking back at his career, which includes collaborations with
Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Marley Marl and others, Ace offers the thankful
"No Regrets," a reflective history of sorts where he gives praise to all of
those who contributed to his better musical memories.

On a less explicit narrative line, Disposable Arts explores the
relationship between Ace's character and his roommate at IDA, portrayed on
the album by MC Paul Barman, a white, Jewish, Prince Paul affiliate. Some of
the interaction between Ace and Barman was inspired by Ace's own trip to
college. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island and interacted
with many Maine and Vermont natives who had never been around black people and
had a cursory knowledge of hip-hop, at best.

Barman's character actively pursues hip-hop, though. In fact, he's even performing a freestyle rap when Ace first meets him in their dorm room.

The interaction between Ace and Barman is sometimes tense and always
entertaining. Like the songs on Disposable Arts, these skits provide a
riveting story of their own. "When people spend their $15 or $16.99 to buy a
CD, I think they want to feel like they bought something that's valuable,
that something was a good purchase, that somebody actually took time and put
together a project," Ace said. "They didn't just put anything together,
throwing some songs back to back and put a label on it. I really respect
the buyer, the fan, the listener because I'm one and I know that I want to
be entertained. I try to look at it from that perspective and try to make a
record as if I was going out and buying it."

As a fan of hip-hop, Ace hopes to encourage fans to respect the art form and
its architects. When he attended a recent Run-DMC
concert, he was disappointed with the lukewarm response fans gave the
legendary Queens trio.

"They deserve a certain amount of energy, a certain amount of love," Ace
said. "They should be made to feel like they are some of hip-hop's pioneers. When people talk about them or when they're mentioned, people that really know give it up, but a lot of people could care less.

"I look at rock and roll and I see cats that don't do an album for 10 years
and then tour and sell out stadiums," he continued. "I feel like we need to
reach that point in hip-hop. Fans need to embrace their past heroes, still
uphold and respect music that was from 10, five, three years ago."

Masta Ace, who has released albums in three different decades, hopes that
Disposable Arts as well as other releases from like-minded artists will
help hip-hop regain its balance. Coming from an era where such disparate
artists as Biz Markie, Public Enemy, N.W.A, Too Short and the Geto Boys were
all popular, Ace knows that it can happen.

"We have to reach a point where people want to hear more than one thing,"
Ace said. "From a fan's perspective, people are just feeding more into the
pursuit of ice, platinum, cars and rims, and that's all that it's about.

"Sometimes I get depressed and wonder, 'What's wrong with people?' We all
would like a nice car and jewelry, but you want people to be a little more
well-rounded than they are."

Radiohead's "Live in Dublin" concert video will have its theatrical U.S. premiere this fall as part of a traveling film festival that will also include documentaries on hip-hop, early punk and electronica.

The HIQI Film Series, which kicks off September 14 in New York, consists entirely of music films, documentaries, shorts and videos.

Along with "Live in Dublin," which was filmed November 2000 for an MTV special, the festival will show Radiohead's video for Amnesiac's "I Might Be Wrong."

The 1978 film "Rockers," considered reggae's "A Hard Day's Night," includes music by Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear and Inner Circle.

"Driver 23," a documentary on Dan Cleveland's Minnesota metal cult band Dark Horse, and its sequel, "The Atlas Moth," will both be shown, along with the metal favorite "Heavy Metal Parking Lot."

Festival shorts will include the Dandy Warhols' "The End of the World as We Knew It" (starring Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland), "Monkey Vs. Robot," "Secret Asian Man" and "Rolling Man." New Order's "Crystal" video and Bob Marley's "I Know a Place" clip will also be shown.

Details of the HIQI Film Series have been announced for only about half the cities it will hit. The event's Web site (www.hiqi.com) will post information in coming weeks about stops in San Diego; Sacramento, California; Olympia; Seattle; Miami; Washington, D.C.; Detroit; and Madison, Wisconsin.
