The E.N.D. is clearly just the beginning for the Black Eyed Peas. Thanks to the speaker-shredding mega-smash "Boom Boom Pow," the group will take the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart next week with first-week sales of more than 304,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

That is more than enough to dethrone last week's #1, the Dave Matthews Band's Big Whiskey & the Groogrux King, the sales of which plummeted by 70 percent to 128,000. At #3, Eminem's Relapse also saw another steep decline (38 percent) to 87,000 units moved, but the album managed to surpass the platinum sales mark in its first month. Showing remarkably strong hang-time, the all-star debut from Chickenfoot — featuring ex-Van Halen members Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani — holds strong at #4 with a more than 50 percent uptick in business to 79,000.

The only debuts in the top 10 are from bachata stars Aventura, whose Last comes in at #5 on sales of 47,000; veteran rapper Mos Def, whose Ecstatic lands at #9 (39,000); and former Pretty Ricky star Pleasure P, whose Introduction of Marcus Cooper sneaks in at #10 (39,000).

The rest of the top 10 are: Lady Gaga's Fame (#6, 47,000), the "Hannah Montana" soundtrack (#7, 46,000) and Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown (#8, 41,000). Back on an independent label after 20 years on a major, legendary New York noisers Sonic Youth hit #18 with their latest, Eternal (19,000), and veteran soul sister Teena Marie is close behind at #20 with Congo Square (18,000).

The full-length debut from D-Block (featuring the members of the LOX and others) drops in at #40 (12,000), while the DJ Quik & Kurupt collaboration, Blaqkout, pops up at #61 (9,000). One of the year's latest most talked-about indie albums, the Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca, arrives at #65 (8,000), and punk agitators Anti-Flag's People or the Gun makes a quiet noise down at #120 (4,000).

The Peas should savor the moment, because next week brings the latest from the Jonas Brothers, Lines, Vines and Trying Times.

The Dave Matthews Band lead the charge in a week of change at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The venerable jam band's Big Whiskey & the Groogrux King (the title is an homage to late sax player LeRoi Moore, who died following an ATV accident last year) will notch the second-biggest rock bow of the year so far, with first-week sales of 424,000, according to figures supplied by Nielsen SoundScan.

Relinquishing the #1 spot after two weeks at the top is Eminem's Relapse, which moved 141,000 more copies, for a three-week total of 962,000. Among the fresh blood in the top 10 is 311's Uplifter, at #3 thanks to 60,000 in sales. At #6 is the self-titled debut from rock supergroup Chickenfoot, whose members include Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, guitarist Joe Satriani and ex-Van Halen members singer Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony. Taking Back Sunday also had a healthy first week, coming in at #7 with New Again, which sold 48,000 copies.

The rest of the top 10 features some usual suspects: Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown (#4, 52,000), the "Hannah Montana" soundtrack (#5, 50,000), Lady Gaga's Fame (#8, 47,000), Kenny Chesney's Greatest Hits II (#9, 39,000) and Taylor Swift's Fearless (#10, 36,000).

Veteran Bay Area punks Rancid will just miss a top 10 debut for their first album of new material in more than six years, Let the Dominoes Fall, which comes in at #11 with sales of 33,000 for their highest-ever chart debut. Speaking of old-school punks, original angry young man Elvis Costello hits #13 with his country tribute Secret Profane & Sugarcane (#13, 28,000). Not-so-angry young man and "Hannah Montana" co-star Mitchel Musso comes in at #19 with his self-titled debut, which moved 20,000 copies.

Kings of Leon appear still to be profiting from the MTV Movie Awards bounce, as their breakthrough Only by the Night album gets a 50 percent sales bump up to #12 on sales of 32,000. The news is not nearly as rosy for sagging goth rocker Marilyn Manson, whose The High End of Low lost 67 percent in week two, plummeting from #4 to #24 on sales of 16,000. He has some company, as Veckatimest from indie faves Grizzly Bear dropped 63 percent, falling from its unlikely #8 debut to #39 (12,000).

Lovable, scruffy mope-rockers the Eels shuffle onto the charts at #43 with Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire (11,000) and the mixtape-style memorial to late DJ J Dilla, Jay Stay Paid, shows up at #96 with 5,000 units moved. And despite more than a decade of hype, the long-awaited first installment of Neil Young's eight-CD career retrospective, Vol. 1 Archives (1963-1972), might be a victim of the recession, as it manages just a #102 debut (5,000). The news is even worse for punk godfather Iggy Pop, whose arty experimental album of French poetry, Preliminaires, flops in at #187 (3,000).

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention the debut at #121 (4,200) of the colorfully named screamo act Iwrestledabearonce, best known for their song "Tastes Like Kevin Bacon."

Expect the Black Eyed Peas to shake things up next week with their future funk opus, The E.N.D.

NEW YORK — With the rain pouring down and a melodic voice resounding through the streets, hundreds of fans braved the storm to hear songs from the Dave Matthews Band's new album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.

Outside of the "Today" show studio, fans were lined up for two blocks surrounding Rockefeller Center, some of whom had been waiting since 11 the night before. Before going on air, Dave joked with the crowd, asking them to bring him a "ham sandwich with cheese and coffee," because he was unable to sleep the night before.

The concert began with an old favorite, "So Much to Say," and the fans were almost louder than Dave Matthews as they sang along. To introduce their new CD, DMB played the new single "Funny the Way It Is," which some say pays tribute to saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died in August, with the line about a "soldier's last breath."

When the band began playing their older favorite "Crash," the rain suddenly turned into a downpour, but the umbrellas were put away as the crowd embraced the soothing music and cool shower. After playing another oldie, "Ants Marching," Dave threw his guitar picks in the crowd. He later had to track down one of those picks to play an encore song, "Alligator Pie."

To thank his fans for sticking out the storm, Dave shook hands with crowdmembers before heading back inside.

The Dave Matthews Band will begin their summer tour July 8 in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Last August, the Dave Matthews Band lost one of their key members when LeRoi Moore died due to complications from an ATV accident. Now the group is back with their new album, Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King, but they insist that just because Moore is gone doesn't mean he's forgotten.

In fact, the band, along with producer Rob Cavallo, made sure a little piece of Moore lives on with this release. "All of us were obviously devastated by Roi's passing, 'cause we were all finally enjoying each other again," Matthews told MTV News. "But Rob was interesting because he only knew Roi for a short period of time, but they had a good chemistry — Rob was really devastated that we didn't have Roi."

So Cavallo, along with the band, found a way to include Roi on a few of the songs. "Rob was really looking forward to piling that dude on top of himself ... but he did say how grateful he was that we had those early sessions," Matthews said. "We didn't force him on anything, but there was a lot of times where he was playing that thing ... so it's there now."

The guys also paid tribute to their fallen friend and bandmate in the title of the album. "Groogrux" isn't just some random person or idea — he's Moore. "It's a nickname for LeRoi, it's a nickname [for] myself," Carter Beauford explained. "Now it's officially a name for Dave [Matthews], Stefan [Lessard] and Boyd [Tinsley], 'cause for the past 18 years they have been in the Groogrux academy. It's a vibe. It's a certain energy."

NEW YORK — The Dave Matthews Band kicked off their 2009 summer tour Tuesday night by selling out Madison Square Garden. From opening track "Don't Drink the Water" to final encore "Tripping Billies," the crowd exuded an energy and noise level that even Rangers and Knicks fans would have envied.

The set list included longtime DMB favorites such as "Raven," "Pig," "Recently," "Corn Bread," "Two Step" and "#41." Each song started and ended with a roar. When it came time for classics like "Dancing Nancies" and "Ants Marching," it was virtually impossible to tell who sang louder, Matthews or the fans. Throw some amazing Tim Reynolds guitar solos into the already potent mix, and you knew right away the show was heading in the right direction.

Even when the band performed songs off the upcoming album Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King for the first time, the energy never wavered. "Funny the Way It Is," which was made available for free download simultaneously with the start of the tour Tuesday, and new song "Spaceman" were instant hits with the crowd. But the highlight was definitely "Why I Am." Matthews introduced the track by recognizing the loss of saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died in August from complications stemming from an ATV accident. When the song ended, the audience showed love for LeRoi by loudly chanting his name. The new songs all had a very familiar DMB feel and will surely please new and old fans alike when the album is released on June 2.

Of course, Dave and company had some great surprises in store, including special guest Gregg Allman, who showed up to help play the classic Allman Brothers Band track "Melissa." Surprisingly, the band did not take on any other cover songs on opening night, but that doesn't mean fans won't get their share as the tour continues through the summer.

Even with the obvious burden of mourning Moore's sudden death, the Dave Matthews Band managed to bestow on New York the honor of an epic tour kickoff — nearly three hours long — and helped affirm a lesson their late bandmate recited constantly: In the end, it's always about the music.

Dave Matthews Band are due to rock a sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd Tuesday (April 14) to kick off their summer tour, but that's just not enough. DMB have also made their new single, "Funny the Way It Is," available to download free of charge.

<embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:373431

The song is the first single off of the band's new album, Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King, which hits stores on June 2. "It's a pretty song and it talks about a lot of things ... death and love and all those things ... but it also talks about the world of opposites that we are in," Matthews explained. "That's the idea behind the song — that we will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to save a kid's life and then we will drop bombs out of the sky on each other and blow a whole school of them to pieces without a thought. And that's a funny world. ... That's why it's called 'Funny the Way It Is.' "

Still, don't expect to get depressed after hearing the song — in true DMB style, the melody, hook and overall feel of the song is pretty upbeat. "It is a joyful tune — that's what it's supposed to be," Matthews said. "But it's also supposed to be about the truth. So that's what we wanted to do on this record ... be honest with ourselves."

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Dave Matthews Band will kick off a tour without LeRoi Moore wailing on the sax.

Moore died in August due to complications from an ATV accident in late June. With LeRoi in their hearts and minds, the rockers will kick off their summer tour with a sold-out show at New York's Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. Joining them will be longtime Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds, as well as Jeff Coffin of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones filling in for the late saxophonist.

The band hits the road nonstop until October 2, wrapping up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Expect to get a good taste of old and new DMB as well as the band's signature cover songs. "It's always fun to do covers," drummer Carter Beauford said. "Not too many, but you know, just a couple to help change gears a little bit and then go back and do your thing to knock 'em dead."

Whether you catch them indoors or outdoors this summer, the Billboard-crowned Top Drawing American Band in the World won't stray too far from form.

"There is a lot of power that comes from playing inside," Matthews said. "But I like the outside venue too. That's fine. I don't care. I like playing, so I don't care really where we are."

Beauford couldn't agree more: "I think that's it right there — he nailed it. We all just love playing. ... It doesn't matter where, 'cause we are going to have fun regardless."

The band's seventh studio album, Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King, is set to drop June 2.

Sometimes playing through tears, the Dave Matthews Band paid tribute to their late saxophone player and band co-founder LeRoi Moore the only way they knew how Tuesday night: by pouring their hearts into their music.

Just hours after news broke that Moore had died due to complications from injuries suffered in a June ATV accident, the band took the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and played what fans described as an emotional, "healing" set. They kicked it off with the song "Bartender," during which audience members said the band appeared to be visibly shaken and at points on the verge of tears.

"When we walked in, I was surprised to see Dave there because they had, literally, four hours to prepare, and he came out and you could see people were definitely sad," said Sebastian Jonqua, who attended the show.

Matthews announced after the song that Moore had died earlier in the day and told a story about his first meeting with the jazz musician, who he joined forces with in 1991 to form the group.

"[Dave] was like, 'We have some sad news. ... We learned today,' and as he was saying this, I was grabbing my friend's knees ... and I was like, 'Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!' " fan Bobbie Celaya said. "Because I knew what was coming, and he was like, 'LeRoi today gave his ghost up,' and right then and there, I started bawling."

In a video from the concert posted on TMZ.com, Matthews, his voice trembling, tells the crowd, "We will miss him forever. It's always easier to leave than to be left. We appreciate y'all being here. ... It has not been a good day for us, but there's nobody I'd rather be with than all my family up here on the stage."

Matthews later told the story of first meeting Moore in a bar in Virginia where Moore was performing. He said his late musical partner was uncharacteristically drunk that night and had to lean on the bar for support, but he recalled falling in love with his friend after hearing him play "the most beautiful version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' that I ever heard in my whole life."

Following the show, fan Selena Carter said getting through that first song was hard for the band and the fans. "The first song ... I turned around to get a drink, and I see a bunch of girls just wiping their tears, genuinely crying," she said. Other attendees described a scene where teary-eyed DMB fans who didn't even know each other were doling out supportive hugs and trying to help one another deal with the sudden loss.

After honoring their friend and bandmate, the group picked up the pace and turned the show into more of a celebration than a somber wake, according to attendees. Longtime fans said there was definitely a special feeling in the air during the set, though a number described Matthews as being less animated than usual onstage as he played some of Moore's favorite songs and spoke a bit more than he typically does.

For Mike Delapaz, who has been going to see the band for more than a decade, the show was fun but a bit different than what he was used to. "I can tell there was a big difference tonight the way the band was playing," he said. "I've met them, drank with them, whatever, but it seems like they didn't want to be there, but they were playing because they had that energy. They wanted to make it real. They wanted to play for LeRoi. It was kind of bittersweet."

In a statement released Wednesday (August 20), RIAA President/CEO Neil Portnow said: "Grammy winner LeRoi Moore was a versatile and inventive saxophonist. A classically trained musician, his love of jazz infused the Dave Matthews Band's music with jazz and funk overtones that helped define the group's eclectic and signature sound. His untimely passing is a loss to music fans everywhere, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the band, his family and all who were moved by his music."

A spokesperson for the band said there isn't information on a memorial service or funeral arrangements for Moore yet.

LeRoi Moore, sax player in the Dave Matthews Band, died Tuesday afternoon (August 19). He was 46.

Moore suffered serious injuries in an ATV accident on June 30 outside the band's home base of Charlottesville, Virginia, including a punctured lung and broken ribs. Moore returned to the hospital last month due to complications.

TMZ reported that the band is scheduled to perform on Tuesday night as planned at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin has been filling in for Moore since his accident, according to the band's Web site.

The band posted the following statement on its Web site Tuesday night: "We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program."

Moore was a jazz musician in Charlottesville when he joined forces with Matthews early in 1991. The band released its first album, Remember Two Things, on its own Bama Rags label late in 1993. That album was recorded live, and DMB have gone on to become one of the most successful live acts in North America.

The band's Somewhere Back in Time trek will hit Australia — for Maiden's first shows there in 15 years — as well as five additional continents, from February through August. The guys are expected to log 100,000 miles on the tour. ...

Opera legend Luciano Pavarotti died Thursday in his hometown of Modena, Italy, of pancreatic cancer at age 71, according to a Reuters report. The hefty bearded tenor was famed for having brought opera to the masses during a nearly 50-year career during which he rang up huge album sales with his 1990 performance of classic aria "Nessun Dorma" from Puccini's "Turandot," and he performed alongside such pop stars as Bono, Sting and the Spice Girls. "Some can sing opera; Luciano Pavarotti was an opera," Bono wrote on U2's Web site. "No one could inhabit those acrobatic melodies and words like him ... I spoke to him last week ... the voice that was louder than any rock band was a whisper." ...

Congress is scheduled to take up topics including misogyny in hip-hop lyrics on September 25 during a hearing titled "From Imus to Industry: The Business of Stereotypes and Degradation." Variety reports that Representative Bobby Rush, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, said, "I want to look at not only the problem caused by misogynistic content in some hip-hop music but also some of the pain that emanates from this degradation." He's proposing voluntary solutions to what he sees as the problem of misogyny in the entertainment industry. Among the witnesses scheduled to appear are Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Doug Morris, Warner Music Group Chairman and CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr., and, so far, only one artist: rapper Master P.
