Melissa Etheridge Identifies David Crosby As Her Children's Father

Talk about your rock and roll progeny.
After years of secrecy, lesbian rocker Melissa Etheridge has revealed that the biological father of her two children is none other than music veteran David Crosby.
Etheridge announced the news during an exclusive interview with "Rolling Stone" magazine, saying that Crosby helped father both of her two children, a three-year-old daughter, Bailey, and one-year-old son, Beckett, via artificial insemination.
Etheridge's long-time partner, film director Julie Cypher, physically carried and gave birth to the two children, although the couple had until now refused to identify who the children's biological father was.
"We just got so tired of this secret," Etheridge told the magazine, "it wears you out. And keeping this big secret goes against how [Julie and I] are choosing to live our lives -- very openly."
For the issue of "Rolling Stone," due to arrive on newsstands this week, Etheridge, Cypher, Bailey, and
Beckett joined David Crosby and his wife, Jan, for an extended-family cover portrait.
As part of the interview, Etheridge and Cypher say that it was Jan who suggested David as a possible father when the idea was first discussed during a joint holiday during the mid-'90s.
Crosby has managed to overcome various health problems, including liver disease, related to his rock and roll lifestyle in the past few years, and a doctor cleared the use of Crosby's genetic material because he had cleaned up.
Crosby is best known for his work in the '60s jangle-pop outfit, The Byrds, as well as a member of the folk trio Crosby, Stills, and Nash. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, in recognition of both groups.
Etheridge's newest record, "Breakdown," has been nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Album.

-- David Basham
What do you think about this story? .

Folk-rock supergroup Crosby Stills Nash & Young held a press conference in New York on Tuesday to announce their upcoming reunion tour, the foursome's first outing in a quarter of a century.
All four members of the group were present to discuss the tour, dubbed CSNY2K, which kicks off January 24 in Detroit, Michigan; they also plugged their upcoming album, "Looking Forward," which is due in stores on October 26.
During the conference, the wheelchair-bound Graham Nash addressed his recent boating accident, which resulted in his breaking both of his legs, saying, "Above my knees, I'm perfectly fine. I'm healing well." He added that by the time the tour starts, he will "be ready to rock."
Neil Young, who had not recorded with the group since 1988's "American Dream," explained that the seeds for his reunion with CSN were sown last year when he and Stills were working on a box set covering the career of their pre-CSNY band, Buffalo Springfield. Soon after that, Stills
invited Young to play on the upcoming CSN record. That led to Young contributing songs of his own to the album and, eventually, rejoining the band.
Young said that the tour will see the group playing songs from "Looking Forward" as well as their hits and songs that they have yet to write. They will also perform songs from each of their solo careers and from their pre-CSNY bands, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds (David Crosby) and The Hollies (Graham Nash).
The 34-date tour, which is being sponsored by VH1, will have tickets ranging in price from $39.50 to $200.
Here's where you'll be able to catch the group:

1/24 - Detroit, MI @ The Palace at Auburn Hills
1/26 - Kansas City, MO @ Kemper Arena
1/29 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Delta Center
2/1 - Tacoma, WA @ Dome
2/2 - Portland, OR @ Rose Garden
2/4 - San Jose, CA @ San Jose Arena
2/7 - Oakland, CA @ Oakland Arena
2/9 - Sacramento, CA @ Arco Arena
2/12 - Los Angeles, CA @ Staples Center
2/15

The Who, Tom Waits In; CSNY Out For Bridge School Benefit

The lineup for Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit concert has gone through some changes.
The Who and Tom Waits have been added to a list of performers that already includes Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkin members Billy Corgan and James Iha, Sheryl Crow, Green Day, Lucinda Williams, and former Beach Boy Brian Wilson (see "Pearl Jam, Sheryl Crow, Billy Corgan, Brian Wilson, More Sign On For Bridge School Benefit").
The much-heralded Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reunion performance will no longer be taking place, however, as Graham Nash broke both of his legs in a boating accident last week in Hawaii. Instead Neil Young will be performing as a solo act, as he often has in the past.
The concerts will be held at the Shoreline Amphitheater in San Francisco on October 30 and 31.
The Who, comprising of surviving founding members Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle along with drummer Zak Starkey, had
previously been added to only the first of the two dates; they have now been added to the second date as well.
The addition of the Who most likely makes the prospect of playing the benefit an even sweeter one for Pearl Jam, and particularly Eddie Vedder, who has been on something of a Who kick. Vedder recently performed with Pete Townshend on "The Late Show With David Letterman," and additionally, he performed a Who tribute show with his friends in C Average, dressed as members of the Who. For his part, Vedder was sporting a Roger Daltrey-esque wig (see "Pearl Jam Prepares to Record New Album").
The usually tour-shy Tom Waits has been on quite the live-show binge lately. Waits, who recently appeared in the film "Mystery Men," has been added for only the October 30 show.
The rest of the lineup will be repeated on both days.

-- Brian Ives
