As fans eagerly await the release of "Michael Jackson's This Is It," musicians are sitting down to recall the overwhelming influence that the pop icon had on the music industry. Common spoke to MTV News about Jackson, noting that he can't wait to go to the theater to see the documentary highlighting the last performance footage from the legend.

"I'm very interested in 'This Is It.' I mean, I look at Michael Jackson and see that he was the brightest star to ever exist on this earth," he told MTV News. "Like the greatest star that we ever witnessed and I think that the world will ever witness."

The documentary, based on footage shot during the singer's final days as he prepared for his London comeback concerts, opens for a two-week theatrical run starting Wednesday. The rapper noted that the movie should help fans of the singer remember why they loved him so much while he was still alive.

"And I'm definitely interested because, like many of us, I wasn't paying attention to Mike as much as I should have been," Common added. "You kind of neglect the great things you have around you, but, you know, once he passed, I realized what his star was to us, and I missed him even more. So I definitely want to see 'This Is It.' "

Based on the footage that he's seen, Common thinks the film will also show fans another side of Jackson. "I seen a clip of the film and I was listening to him tell either the bass player or somebody what to do, and I was like, this dude is cold," he said. "You hear him and see him do stuff, and you go, man, that's why he is Michael Jackson and there'll be no one greater."

Don't miss "Michael Jackson's This Is It" Premiere Special, airing on MTV and VH1 on Tuesday, October 27 at 8:30 p.m. ET! "Michael Jackson's This Is It" opens in a limited engagement on October 27 and wide on October 28.

After venturing left with a more dance-oriented sound for Universal Mind Control, Common is returning to his raw rap roots for his next album, The Believer.

"For Believer, it was creating raw music, raw hip-hop," the Chicago MC told MTV News last week. "I just wanted to create good hip-hop music. When I create albums, they develop as I go along, 'cause I have different thoughts and visions. And then as you create the music, it takes its own personality and spirit to it. But the beginning of it is raw hip-hop, it's just soulful."

For the project, the rapper's ninth solo album, he'll reunite with the sound architects behind his first three albums, No I.D. and Twilite Tone. Com said reconnecting with the pair and having Kanye West onboard as well gives the album a homecoming feel.

"Twilite Tone and No I.D., they produced my first three albums and they were the first producers I worked with," he said. "And Kanye is an extension of them. Kanye always says No I.D. is his mentor. That's how I met Kanye, through No I.D. So for me to have these three working on my album is going home again. But I'm always gonna offer something new and fresh."

The Believer has been on Common's radar for a while now. The poetic MC initially was set to work on the project last year. But in the midst of working on the follow-up to Finding Forever, Com got a taste for dance music and put out Universal Mind Control first.

"The Believer is definitely gonna be an album," Com told MTV News in October 2008. "It's gonna be the next album. I was ready to make The Believer, then I started working on an EP called Invincible Summer. Then I was like, 'OK, "Universal Mind Control" — that's the name of the single.' Like we said on the song, 'If you wanna dance, let's dance.' That's what that whole concept is like: Whatever you want the people to do, you create the music for them to do it."

Common Wants To Curb Chicago Youth Violence

In the wake of the tragic death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert, many hip-hop artists have spoken out about violence, not only among the youth of Chicago, but in other cities like Atlanta and Newark. Nas wrote an open letter to Chicago teens following the honor student's senseless beating death, urging them that they were fighting the wrong war.

Killer Mike blogged for XXLmag.com, apologizing to Albert and the four teens charged with his murder, Silvonus Shannon, 19; Eugene Riley, 18; Eugene Bailey, 17; and Eric Carson, 16, for letting them down. David Banner also addressed the situation in his song, appropriately titled, "Something Is Wrong."

MTV News caught up with Common at Wednesday's Hennessy Artistry 2009 Series show in New York, and the legendary Chicago MC echoed their sentiments. "For me, I grew up around it, but I have a great mom, have a wonderful stepfather and great family around, and I know every kid is not provided that blessing which we should naturally have," Common said.

"I look at it now and say it's just some of the choices I was able to make because of what I was exposed to and the opportunities I had. And because I know these kids don't have it, I feel like it's our responsibility to give them the opportunity, to give them the information, to listen to them."

The South Side native said he initially didn't want to see the viral video that captured Albert's beating death because he felt that it was just making people angrier. But eventually, he did watch it, and what he felt was hurt. "Just to know that that young man, and young men and women all over the city been dying all over the country — it's a painful thought."

Common said incidents of young people being murdered are nothing new for the city. But Albert's death has brought the issue back into the national spotlight. According to The New York Times, 34 Chicago students were killed last year and at least 290 were injured in shootings. Common said the solution to the problem lies in showing teens and young children that there's hope out there and their lives have value.

"When you value your life, you will value others' lives too," he said. "You got to really just know that the choices you make will affect the rest of your life."

NEW YORK — Common and the Roots may have shared top billing Wednesday night during their performance at Terminal 5 in Manhattan, but the under card — featuring Colin Monroe, Don Omar and Bilal — packed as big of a punch as the two musical heavyweights.

It was the surprise guest, though, that stole the show from them all.

"We got the Queen in the house," Common told the crowd that gathered for the last stop of the Hennessy Artistry 2009 Series. "I don't know if you know who I'm talking about."

Moments later, Queen Latifah came onstage to a thunderous applause. The legendary MC sang some jazz standards before kicking into rhyme mode. "Who you calling a bi---?" she asked, as ?uestlove led the Roots into "U.N.I.T.Y."

Once the Roots hit the stage, the production took on a round-robin feel, as Common darted on and off the stage and other acts took turns onstage in between.

The Chicago MC performed "The People" one moment, and then the Roots went into "The Next Moment." Common returned for "The Light," and the Roots smoothly segued into A Tribe Called Quest's "Bonita Applebum."

Tribe frontman Q-Tip ran onstage and took the mic. The Queens rapper spit some of his classic lines before turning things up a notch with Tribe's "Electric Relaxation."

Eve, Ashanti, Robin Thicke and wife Paula Patton, Tyrese, "Gossip Girl" actor Penn Badgley, Lucy Liu and Anthony Mackie were among those in attendance for the set. The performance was the finale in a four-city tour that included stops in Atlanta, Houston and Washington, D.C.

NEW YORK — One of the great comeback artists of 2008 hit his hometown's biggest stage on Monday night when Brooklyn native Maxwell wowed the crowd at Madison Square Garden. Chrisette Michele and Chicago-native-turned-Brooklynite Common were the opening acts.

Taking the stage after a brief set from Chrisette Michele, Common laced his performance with hip-hop cap-tipping as he started doing a piece of Q-Tip's "Breathe and Stop" before transitioning into his own "Go." Later in the show he performed his and Erykah Badu's "Love of My Life" solo, during which he briefly covered some hip-hop standards such as Boogie Down Productions' "The Bridge Is Over," the Fugees' "Ready or Not," Kanye West's "Jesus Walks," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" and Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang."

"The People" and the "The Light" came next. Keeping with his hip-hop motif, Com freestyled off the dome: "I'm not Drake, but I'm successful/ I'm not Lil Wayne but I'll f--- a lady cop," he rapped. "We ain't with no drama/ I said 'F--- Bush,' so we voted for Obama."

Common's finale was "Universal Rhyme Control," during which he popped and locked.

The homecoming for headliner Maxwell was sweet: The Garden went completely dark for a few seconds as the chorus from Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" warmed up the arena.

Max walked out in a dark three-piece suit. The singer started his set on the main stage, but later took to a runway that split into a Y-shaped fork. He had a giant video screen behind him that broke into four smaller screens and later into two ones.

"Even though she pays me no attention/ All I wanna show is my affection/ Lose myself inside her ebony," he sang during "Sumthin' Sumthin'." "She ain't even checking me," he continued, dropping to his knees to add drama. On cue, women in the audience started screaming.

Dance splits followed, and then Max dragged the mic stand onto the runway. He faked walking back to the main stage, then ran down the left side of the runway, slapping hands, then did the same down the right side.

The tempo slowed down for the soulful "Lifetime." "Sometimes you just wanna smack your boss in the face," he improvised. "But you gotta put food on your table ... Brooklyn, stand up!"

The lyrical seductions continued on "Bad Habits" (from his recent chart-topping BLACKsummers'night LP)
and one of the biggest crowd-pleasers of the night, "Fortunate."

It looked like Maxwell might actually drop a few real tears at one point in the night. He started assessing the moment.

"I'm from Brooklyn, New York," he told the crowd. "My family is from the West Indies: My mother is from Haiti and my father is Puerto Rican. Things like this are not are supposed to happen to us," he said about headlining the Garden. "I'm gonna sing this song with all my heart and if you could help me, I would be so happy."

He then went into "This Woman's Work," which was written by Kate Bush but has become one of Maxwell's signature songs.

After his recent hit "Pretty Wings," Max played with the audience a little.

"Y'all didn't hear what happened?" he asked. "Are y'all playing with me?" He then told then what happened.

"It happened the moment when you were revealed," he sang with no beat, going into "Ascension." " 'Cause you were a dream that you should not have been/ A fantasy real ..."

"You gave me this beating, baby," he continued as the audience sang along, at times letting them take the lead. "This rhythm inside/ And you made me feel good and feel nice and feel loved/ Give me paradise."

The band then started the song over, with the beat this time. After the song concluded, someone threw a pair of panties onstage.

"I have [bodily fluids] all over my forehead!" Max joked.

Getting more serious, he said, "I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be a New Yorker in New York tonight."

Over the years, Queen Latifah has rubbed shoulders with countless people in music and film industry. So it's no surprise that on Sunday, on the set of the video for her new single, "Fast Car," Missy Elliott (also featured on the record), Common, Robin Thicke and his wife, actress Paula Patton, shot their cameos for the video.

"I just asked them," Latifah said, "and I really appreciate all of them showing up, because they all have really busy schedules. They got to drive these Mustangs around this track a little, put the pedal to the metal, which is always fun."

The video was shot at Wall Township Speedway in South Belmar, New Jersey. Latifah, Common and Thicke all got a chance to drive around the racetrack in their own individual Ford Mustangs before the rain came down.

Latifah stars along side both Common and Paula Patton in the upcoming romantic comedy, "Just Wright."
Latifah stars as a physical therapist Lesile Wright who falls for a pro basketball player played by Mehcad Brooks. She said they've built a rapport, while on set.

"I know how hard they've been working, and they know how hard I've been working, but we cool like that."

The song is from Latifah's new LP, Persona, out today (August 25), which combines hip-hop and pop was was executive-produced by the hitmaking team of Cool and Dre.

Common said he really respects Latifah as not only a great talent in everything from music to modeling to business, but a friend.

"I think she's an incredible person and we've been working together ['Just Wright'], so it's a camaraderie, so she invited me to come through for the video and I was like, 'Yeah, for sure.' "

Robin Thicke said he and Latifah had been friends for 10 years, so he jumped at the opportunity when asked. However, he did seem most excited to drive around the racetrack ...

"I was getting my Ricky Bobby on!" he said. "If you're not first you're last."

When MTV News spoke to Kid Cudi in March, he planned to follow up his hugely successful debut single, "Day N' Nite," with the ominous "Sky Might Fall." After all, he had caught the attention of many a blogger by mashing up the song with the trailer for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." But fast-forward a few months and it looks like Cudi has decided to go in another direction.

"We put a little trick-a-roo on you," Cudi told MTV News last week at the New York stop of the Great Hangover Tour. He said that the video for his second single, "Make Her Say," had just been completed and that it was "fresh."

"We wanted to go for a real abstract and iconic-looking video, something real artsy. It's really dope," he said. "It's like split screen, and how he shot it is with multiple, different shots. It's almost like there's still shots and there's movement going on in them. It's really trippy."

The video is directed by Nez Khammal, whose previous work includes M.I.A.'s "Jimmy" and Lily Allen's "The Fear." He said he thinks he was chosen because he presented a way to make it look like four very busy artists — Cudi, Kanye West, Common and Lady Gaga — got together to shoot the video, despite being on opposite coasts.

"To be honest, they loved the idea more than anything else," Khammal said. "At the time, they didn't know if [Lady Gaga] was going to be in the video or not. ... Having four major artists all featuring on one track, you'll probably shoot them around different places around America, [but my treatment] was a way to have them all featured onscreen together."

Gaga wasn't able to do the video, but Khammal kept plenty busy with the other three. He said he had to find locations in both Los Angeles and New York City that would fit the video's minimal aesthetic. It took ages for him to find the perfect shot for West's poolside scene in L.A., and avoiding New York City's uniquely familiar skyline was one of the shoot's many challenges.

"We shot Kanye in L.A. and we shot Common and Kid Cudi in New York. I tried to find a place in New York that just felt — not that it had to be specifically L.A., but something that just jelled everything.

"We did a half a day with Kanye, two-thirds of a day with Kid Cudi, and then a third of a day with Common," he continued. "It was quite compact, like a get-up-and-go sort of thing."

He said the rappers' creativity and experience helped make things run smoother. "It's always good when someone knows what he is talking about and he sort of adds to it," he said. "Because at the end of the day, it's like a team effort, and you all want to get together to create the best thing possible.

"Working with three artists — not that I'm brownnosing — but working with three artists that are so experienced, it was so easy getting the shots," he added. "It was like one or three takes, performance-wise, and you didn't even have to work that hard as a director to get the performance out of them."

At this point it's not really news that the Jonas Brothers have Miley Cyrus on their new album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, which dropped Tuesday (June 16), and we here at MTV News are not surprised in any way to hear that the boys turned to a hip-hop star for another song on their new album.

Back in March, the guys shared with MTV News their dream of embracing hip-hop and "getting someone like a Common or a Lupe Fiasco or a Mos Def" to collaborate with them. And — just like that! — they got Common to guest-star on the song "Don't Charge Me With the Crime."

"We have Common on one song called 'Don't Charge Me With the Crime,' which is one of my favorite songs. It's a story song," Kevin Jonas told MTV News recently, describing the track's bank-robbery premise, which, he assured fans, is purely fictional. "It didn't really happen to us. But it's definitely fun to have him on the track."

Not only did the Jonas Brothers seek inspiration from the streets for the album, they also hooked up with young blues guitarist Jonny Lang for their song, "Hey Baby." "We're huge fans of his music," Kevin said. "He's playing guitar on it. For us, we've never done collaborations with anyone, other than [our bodyguard] Big Rob, we've never done collaborations with real artists on our record, so this time around, we have some pretty awesome people."

What do you think of the new Jonas Brothers album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times? Send your review to the Buzzworthy blog and the best one will be published on the site on Monday!

AUSTIN, Texas -- "Ya'll motherf---ers are smiling. Ya'll enjoyed yourself. Ain't nobody got shot tonight."

That was Kanye West, onstage Saturday night at the Levi's Fader Fort, lashing out at his detractors (or, as he put it, "the motherf---ers who want to f--- with" him), a large and seemingly ever-growing contingent that, on this weekend, included those who didn't believe he should have been at South by Southwest, even if it was to host a showcase for his label, G.O.O.D. Music.

Those purists -- the South By vets who remember the good old days, when bands came to Austin looking for that elusive record deal, and when every event wasn't sponsored by a mobile device -- were probably going out of their heads on Saturday, 24 hours dominated by globally successful rapper/producers, celebrity bloggers and toothsome TV chefs. It was SXSW gone Hollywood -- parties by Rachael Ray and Perez Hilton, even rumored Robert Pattinson sightings -- and, to be honest, West's showcase should've been the least of their worries.

Because it was, in essence, just a decent 90-minute Kanye concert, albeit one bereft of sexy holograms and smoky moonscapes. His appearance was perhaps the second worst-kept secret of the entire week (Metallica's Friday night show at Stubb's takes top honors in that category), and hours before the G.O.O.D. showcase's scheduled 8 p.m. start time, the line of SXSW badge-holders looking to get in stretched the entire length of the Fader Fort.

Of course, those folks would be waiting a long time. West didn't take the stage until it was nearly 10 p.m., but when he finally did -- decked out in a denim vest, dark shades on his face -- he more than made up for the delay. Backed by the usual assortment of characters (a pair of DJs, a guitarist and drummer in riot gear, a female backup singer with shoulder pads like the Legion of Doom), he ripped through a few verses of "Amazing," welcomed fans to the future and then slipped into his primary role of the evening: Emcee.

And not of the rapping variety.

Because for the next hour, 'Ye played hypeman to a string of G.O.O.D. artists -- Consequence, GLC, Big Sean -- spitting a verse here or there, urging the crowd to throw their hands in the air, etc. It wasn't the West most were expecting, and during some of the, uh, lesser moments (the Fonzworth Bentley step routine, a cringe-worthy set by British crooner Mr. Hudson), they made their displeasure known by streaming toward the exits. But then Kanye, ever the showman, would lure them back with snippets of his own tunes, like "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" or "Crack Music."

That's not to say there weren't some genuinely excellent moments, though. West traded verses with up-and-comers 88 Keys ("Stay Up (Viagra)") and Kid Cudi ("Welcome to Heartbreak") and shared a genuinely jaw-dropping freestyle session with Common and Eryah Badu(!). And when welcomed the entire G.O.O.D. roster onto the stage for the one-two punch of "Good Life" and "Love Lockdown," he had the entire crowd going bananas (even if he did flub a line or two because he "got too excited"). He shouted out each member of his roster as the applause built, then moved on to the evening's sponsors, taking special care to instruct Levi's to "cut the check."

Hey, at least he's honest. And somewhere, a SXSW loyalist's head spontaneously combusted.

But their nightmare was far from over. As if dealing with Rachael Ray's second-annual South By soiree (sets by the Hold Steady and the Thermals, delicious themed beverages) wasn't enough, they had put up with Perez Hilton, who was back in town for his "One Night in Austin" party.

Held in the same supermarket-turned-mega club that Jane's Addiction destroyed on Thursday, Hilton's party had a "Divas" theme, featuring sets by Little Boots and Ladyhawke (Lady Sovereign was a no-show, which led Hilton to call her a "c--t" live onstage), plus a surprise appearance by the Indigo Girls. Seriously.

Hilton himself wore a replica of Aretha Franklin's inauguration hat and seemed genuinely nonplussed by the fact that his party was in direct competition with West's.

Of course, that point proved moot when West popped in for a quick five-song performance, to the squealed delight of all in attendance.

And then, having fused their powers to become some sort of celebrified Voltron, Kanyez then set out to destroy all vestiges of this once very un-celeb event. Or usher it into the future. Depends on your point of view.

MTV News was Live & Mobile at the South by Southwest festival this week, with blogs, articles plus live and on-demand video of all the bands, gigs and BBQ!

And then, of course, there was the buzz still surrounding the night's most heartfelt moment, when Heath Ledger won a Globe posthumously for Best Supporting Actor. "At the Golden Globes, the energy is pretty upbeat, chatty and jokey most of the time," "The Office" star Jenna Fischer observed. "But when Heath Ledger won, everybody collectively brought it down for a second and honored him. It was really poignant. Honestly, I was honored to be in the room when that happened. It was really moving. He was an amazing, amazing actor, and I was glad to see him get that tribute."
