Collective Soul will return to the musical mix next week with the release of its fifth album, "Blender," while the first single from the new record, "Why Pt. 2" is already working its way up the rock and active rock radio charts.

The Atlanta-based band originally issued a track called "Why" as an Australian B-side to the "Breathe" single from the group's 1994 debut, "Hints, Allegations And Things Left Unsaid," although frontman Ed Roland recently explained that "Pt. 2" was not intended to be a sequel to the earlier song.

"Lyrically, it's a song where I just kept singing, 'Why?'" Roland told MTV Radio of the new track.

"So when I was writing this song," he continued, "I just kept singing 'Why' and couldn't get it out of my head. Then I remembered we already had a song [called] 'Why,' so I thought, 'Well, it doesn't have anything to do with that song and not really many people heard that song, so I'll just put 'Pt. 2' at the end of it and try to be cute and clever and move on.' Basically, [I got] lazy and didn't want to rewrite the song." [RealAudio]

Roland also indicated that such a laid-back, nonchalant attitude pervaded much of the recording sessions for "Blender," which he said was a reaction, in some ways, to the meticulousness that went into Collective Soul's previous LP, 1999's "Dosage."

"['Blender'] is a very open and very loose record, and I don't mean that in a sloppy way,"
he
described. "It's just on the last record, we put it under a microscope and we made sure that everything was perfectly placed and perfectly played. It's good to do a record like that, but we spent a lot of time in the studio.

"Whereas with this record, we recorded it in our rehearsal space in Atlanta, which is just this big open room. We rolled in the ProTools, learned the song, and then played it. I don't think anybody took more than three takes, once they learned the part they were going to play, so it has that kind of vibe, which is good."

"There are a couple of [songs], actually, where the first time I sang and played them, we used what you usually call the scratch track," Roland said.

Collective Soul will issue "Blender" on October 10, and the band is currently out and about on the road opening up for fellow Southern rockers Creed. The Creed-Collective Soul outing is scheduled to roll into Spring, Texas on Wednesday night and continue through an October 18 gig in Oklahoma City.

Collective Soul is currently huddled in the studio working on its fifth album, and the band has teamed up with Atlanta radio station WNNX for a "Collective Soulection" contest to name the forthcoming album.
Fans have been invited to submit a possible title for the next Collective Soul album through a special section of the radio station's Web site from now until May 1 (www.99x.com).
The grand-prize winner will receive tickets to any WNNX-sponsored show this year, access to future Collective Soul shows, and will be brought onstage to announce the title during the band's performance at the Music Midtown festival in Atlanta on May 6 (see "Creed, Nas, Oasis To Play Music Midtown").
The lucky wordsmith will also be credited in the liner notes to the next Collective Soul CD.
The "Collective Soulection" contest is being
held in two stages; the first stage is open until April 14, while the second stage will run from April 17 through May 1. However, fans are warned that only one entry is allowed per person, and all duplicate entries will automatically be disqualified.
Collective Soul enjoyed a sales rebound with its last LP, 1999's "Dosage," which sold 150,000 copies more than its predecessor, 1997's "Disciplined Breakdown," according to SoundScan figures.
Look for Collective Soul to preview some if its new material during a three-day jaunt next month, including an appearance at Music Maynia in Birmingham, Alabama on May 5, the aforementioned Music Midtown gig on May 6, and the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee on May 7.

Collective Soul is taking its riff-laden rock into a rather unusual corporate arena.
The band has teamed with MindSpring Enterprises and Trans World Entertainment to release "MindSpring Rocks With Collective Soul," a limited edition CD-ROM which pairs the Internet service provider's latest software with three Collective Soul tracks.
Included on the disc are "Crown" from the band's latest album "Dosage," "Disciplined Breakdown" from the 1997 album of the same name, and a previously unreleased live video of "Heavy," recorded for VH1's "Hard Rock Live" in August.
The band will play a MindSpring-hosted party on November 7 in Atlanta to help plug the release and dole out discs to fans. For those who can't make it to Georgia, the free CD will be carried at a number of Trans World Entertainment stores throughout the month, and it is also available by calling the toll-free number 1-888-MSPRING.

By mid-Sunday, the calming effect of performances by artists such as Everlast, Mike Ness, and Elvis Costello had helped to counterbalance Saturday night's metal-fueled mayhem, restoring some semblance of normalcy to the scene at Woodstock '99. But during the last few hours of the three-day concert event, something went inexplicably wrong as concertgoers set fires and wreaked destructive havoc across the compound following the Red Hot Chili Peppers' closing set.
Earlier Sunday evening on the west stage, the vibe grew more intense (but strictly in the musical sense) as Sevendust and Collective Soul, two bands from the metro-Atlanta area, made their case for the current state of Southern rock, a notion that typically conjures up images of bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers.
Sevendust smashed any such Southern-fried misconceptions with a breakthrough set which conjured up comparisons to Green Day's performance at Woodstock II in 1994. After stints on last year's Ozzfest
and this summer's Warped Tour, the group has built up a reputation for its thunderous live show, and it drew one of the largest crowds of the weekend to the west stage.
Careening through a set of mostly new material from its forthcoming sophomore album, Sevendust did reach back to pay homage to its heritage and influences by incorporating a few bars of Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Pantera's "Walk" into the coda of its driving "Too Close To Hate."
Free candles that had been passed out to the crowd during the day were lit and held aloft, transforming the audience into a sea of lights for a rather nonplussed version of "Under the Bridge." But by the time the Chili Peppers' set reached its tail end, more than a half-dozen fires were raging near the east stage, with the largest shooting 10-15 feet in the air (see "UPDATE: Flames, Looting, Violence Mar Woodstock Finale").
The band left the stage as organizers tried to get fire
teams to the scene, but before any assistance had arrived , the Peppers returned to the stage, with Kiedis commenting, "It looks like 'Apocalypse Now' out there."
The Peppers ducked backstage and returned a few moments later for an incredibly inappropriate (though utterly Jungian) cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire," which the band had already planned to play as part of a tribute in honor of the legendary guitarist.
A silly, anti-climactic laser show tribute to Hendrix followed the conclusion of the Chilis' set, signaling the musical end of Woodstock '99. But the fires continued to rage on and grow out of control, eventually spreading to the vendor tents as thousands of concertgoers rioted across the grounds in what may become the biggest public concert disaster in recent memory.

Attention Collective Soul concert-goers: If you want to light up during the group's power ballads, fine. Just don't flick your Bic at Ed Roland.
Those words of warning come after the Collective Soul frontman was beaned by a lighter thrown by an audience-member during the KMYZ Birthday Bash on May 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, forcing the band to end its set after only five songs.
According to Collective Soul's management, Roland received only minor bruises and scratches from the projectile, and the band was not expected to cancel or postpone any shows. The night after Roland was struck by the errant lighter, the group performed at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee.
A local newspaper, the "Tulsa World," reports that security located and detained a suspect believed to be responsible for downing Roland, but the unidentified fan was later released after Collective Soul and concert organizers opted not to press charges.
Even though Roland did not suffer any serious
injuries, the latest incident is eerily reminiscent of another airborne assault on the singer that occurred during the first few dates of the band's current tour (see "Collective Soul Kicks Off U.S. Tour With A Bang (Of Sorts)").
Tonight Collective Soul will play the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri.

Collective Soul will also be one of the few acts from Woodstock '94 to return for Woodstock III, scheduled for July 23-25 in Rome, New York (see "Woodstock Lines Up Korn, Rage, Jewel, DMX, Aerosmith, 26 Others").
In a recent interview, Collective Soul told MTV News that the band is considering playing a concert to help ring in the year 2000, but certain transportation arrangements would have to be made first.
Roland said. "There will be no flying involved around the first [of next year] and the end of the year."
"So, we're trying to do something, maybe," agreed guitarist Ross Childress. "We might do something, as long as we can get there on the bus. As long as we can drive."
"Ground transportation only," [RealVideo] Roland added.
"Please," Childress said.
"I just don't want to take my chances in an airplane 35,000 feet above the ground," Roland continued. "If something goes wrong, I'll take it down here."
"I don't think it's gonna be [that bad] with some people just blowing things up," Childress said. "But the ground transportation, that's our only concern."
For more on Collective Soul, be sure to

Collective Soul is back with its fourth album, "Dosage," which has gotten a significant boost over the past two months from its duelling singles: "Run," a ballad which first appeared on the "Varsity Blues" soundtrack, and "Heavy," which is, well, heavier. What's the reason for the double play?
"The cornerstone of the band is rock," front man Ed Roland told MTV News. "I mean, we're a rock and roll band, and we didn't want to lose that... core audience, that edge, so... the record company was a little worried about 'Run' being too soft for rock, which it is... and our suggestion was, 'why don't you just release "Heavy?"' and they did. They went with it and so far, it's worked out really cool for us." [28.8 RealVideo]
The band is on tour right now with fellow Atlanta group Marvelous 3 (see "Marvelous 3 Hits Big With 'Neglected' Single").
You can check the guys out in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Saturday.
