With the recent news that album sales tumbled yet again in 2006 — this time a 4.9 percent decline from the previous year — it's no wonder '07 is off to such a slow start. Sure, major labels drag their feet every January, hoping to squeeze in a few more weeks of hibernation before climbing out of the cave. But with new Mos Def and Mario albums bumping to the spring (or beyond) at the last minute, 2007 doesn't exactly seem like a party the majors are waiting to get started.

With that in mind, it might be slightly less shocking that this week's "heavyweights" are Sloan, Ron Sexsmith and the Autumn Defense. All of whom could be outdone by a soundtrack, be it the Snoop-featuring one to "Arthur and the Invisibles" or Philip Glass' score to "Notes on a Scandal." Or, better yet, they could be one-upped by the book sales 50 Cent will likely amass with his new street-literature series, which also debuts in stores Tuesday (January 9).

But at least that leaves room for the colorfully named 7000 Dying Rats, PoPo and Chumbawamba — yes, they live! — to steal a little more of the limelight. That is, until another equally foreboding set of contenders — America and the Smithereens among them — storm their way onto store shelves next week.

The Sound of Soundtracks: Were it not for new songs by Snoop Dogg and Jewel, the "Arthur and the Invisibles" soundtrack would be little more than a score. Well, OK, there is a contribution from Elijah too, but the remainder of the disc was crafted by composer Eric Serra. So if you're just after Snoop's "Go Girl," you might want to try the single-download route instead.

Elsewhere in the wide, wonderful world of musical accompaniments, Disney hopes the "Jump In!" soundtrack does even half — or a third, or fourth — as well as the one to "High School Musical," which sold more than any other CD last year. The "Jump In!" soundtrack features Keke Palmer, N.L.T., T-Squad and other be-tween artists. In the meantime, the more recognizable Will.I.Am, 2Pac and Cypress Hill surface, along with Talib Kweli and Miri Ben-Ari, on the soundtrack to "Freedom Writers." And if you're still hearing composer Philip Glass' music from the buzzed-about "Notes on a Scandal," that's also available for your listening pleasure.

Green Days Are Here Again: Well, yes and no. Reprise recently secured rights to two of the group's early releases that had been originally issued by Lookout! Records, based in the band's Bay Area homeland. But while the latter label reissued 1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk! in 2004, those re-releases went out of print shortly thereafter and are now being reserviced once again — in frill-free form — by Reprise. So, in other words, if you're a Green Day fan who's somehow managed to miss these two formative items, here's your third chance.

Flavas of the Week: In case you haven't caught up yet with two of rap's hottest burgeoning subgenres, TVT Records — home to the Ying Yang Twins and Pitbull — is serving up a couple of generous packages. Crunk Hits Vol. 3 cobbles together tracks by those artists, plus Lil Jon, Paul Wall, Akon, Lil Wayne and Three 6 Mafia. Hyphy Hitz, on the other hand, sticks it to the Bay Area, where the hyphy sound was born, with a set featuring Keak Da Sneak, Mistah F.A.B. and E-40. Get 'em while they're hot.

In Their Defense: From hyphy to alt-country — ah, such is the beauty of New Releases. If you're getting a bit impatient for Wilco's next opus, you can kill some time with the third effort by side project the Autumn Defense. Featuring bassist John Stirratt and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, the band's self-titled CD is its first since 2003's Circles and finds the duo re-immersing itself into country-pop, lo-fi and other Byrds-like sounds.

Chumb Change: Just when you thought you'd never hear the name "Chumbawamba" again, the politically charged British troupe is back with its umpteenth effort, A Singsong and a Scrap. This time around, the crew has kept it mostly acoustic, eschewing the loops, samples and synths in favor of traditional secular English tunes. But don't worry: The "Tubthumping" group's four-part harmonies are still very much intact.

Canadian Comebackers: Ron Sexsmith gets a hand from none other than Kiefer Sutherland this week, as the singer/songwriter's Time Being drops on Ironworks Music, a label co-owned by Jack Bauer. But for the LP, which was previously available overseas, Sexsmith also ganged up with a band of Elvis Costello collaborators: producer Mitchell Froom, bassist Davey Faragher and drummer Pete Thomas. (Musos may recall that it was the Mojo magazine cover image of Costello holding Sexsmith's first LP that drew attention to the latter singer/songwriter.)

Sexsmith's Canadian comrades Sloan have returned too, with Never Hear the End of It. The guys seem to be a little backed up: Their first release in three years features no less than 30 tracks, only one of which is shorter than a minute. The Beatles-esque band's eighth release features "Living With the Masses," "Before the End of the Race" and "Fading Into Obscurity."

Song Title of the Week:

"We Had 'Dying' in Our Name Before All Those Metalcore Co------ers Came Along" from 7000 Dying Rats' Season in Hell

Other Notables:

7000 Dying Rats' Season in Hell: What, the band name isn't convincing enough? Well then maybe soon-to-be grindcore classics like "Altar of Goat Skulls," "Death Hammer of the Bearded Ones" and "Balls of Bigotry" are enough to convince you? How about a rapid-fire cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"? Still not feelin' it? Sheesh. Read on.

The PoPo's The PoPo: Originally due out late last year, this maiden release by Philadelphia's so-called "post-hip-hop" band also incorporates traces of punk and world music. Written and recorded in the group's basement, the iconoclastic effort features eight tracks, including "I Feel Mysterious Today," "London Falling" and "Funtimes on the Frontline."

Various artists' At the Crossroads: A Benefit for Homeless Youth: San Francisco street-youth support program At the Crossroads is getting a helping hand from the likes of Calexico, the Faint, Rogue Wave and others on this comp, the sales of which go toward the organization. The Scattered Pages chip in with a cover of the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," while Creeper Lagoon, Thee More Shallows, Boyskout, Bettie Serveert and the Pink Mountaintops round out the release.

New Releases:

· 7000 Dying Rats - Season in Hell (HeWhoCorrupts)
· The Autumn Defense - The Autumn Defense (Broadmoor)

What happens when you try to balance the love and hate in your life? Just ask Papa Roach, whose Lovehatetragedy comes out Tuesday (June 18). The follow-up to Infest features the single "She Loves Me Not" and finds frontman Jacoby Shaddix (f.k.a. Coby Dick) grappling with marital strife.

As the guitar player for Alice in Chains and friend of their late frontman, Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell is also familiar with moody music. He serves up Degradation Trip, his first album since 1998's Boggy Depot.

On a lighter note, Wyclef Jean's not hiding his enthusiasm that Masquerade hits stores this week, while Guided By Voices and their Universal Truths and Cycles share shelf space with Our Lady Peace's Gravity, Paulina Rubio's Border Girl and Paul Oakenfold's Bunkka, which features Nelly Furtado, Perry Farrell, Ice Cube and Tricky.

Finally, a bunch of Essentials and Anthology albums from greats such as Alice Cooper, Devo and Cameo hit shelves as well. Word up.

CHICAGO — Chumbawamba will celebrate their 20th anniversary in
January by doing what they do best — waxing political on an
album that explores new territory for the tubthumping anarchist rave
rockers.

The as-yet-untitled release will combine dance tracks with samples of
British folk tunes, singer Dunstan Bruce said Tuesday at the Chicago
Underground Film Festival at the famed Biograph Theater. His remarks
accompanied the Stateside premiere of Chumbawamba's documentary,
"Well Done. Now Sod Off."

"The last album flopped terribly," Bruce said of 2000's
WYSIWYG (see ). "It was a real cut-and-paste album. This is more a
collection of songs. It's more of a post-punk album than an
in-your-face album."

WYSIWYG's poor sales cost the Chumbas their European record
deal with EMI, though their American label, Universal Records, is
scheduled to release their new album early next year — a shocker
even to Bruce.

"Universal must have a lot of copies [of WYSIWYG] in a
warehouse somewhere," he joked. In all seriousness (which with this
band, as their documentary shows, isn't terribly serious),
Chumbawamba have quit trying to top the charts with another
"Tubthumping."

"We've given up trying to figure out what makes a radio-friendly
single," Bruce said. "We've tried and it doesn't work. We don't know,
so we just do what we want to do." As fellow singer Alice Nutter says
in "Sod Off," "We get a lot of crap for being a one-hit wonder, but
we always expected to be a no-hit wonder."

Like all the band's previous recordings, the new album features
political statements likely to stir up controversy, at least in their
British homeland. One track attacks U.K. law enforcers for shooting
and killing a man they believed was armed, but who was actually
carrying a table leg in a paper bag.

"Well Done. Now Sod Off" explains Chumbawamba's nonconformist ideals and chronicles the eight-member punk collective through their years
of communal living and political activism, which peaked at 1998's
Brit Awards when they doused England's deputy prime minister with
water.

Directed by Ben Unwin, "Sod Off" is as much comedy as political
statement, however. Bruce and cohorts are hilarious as they reminisce
about their shoplifting contests — who could steal the strangest
item? — before each gig. Bruce also laughs his way through
several reviews and letters slamming Chumbawamba. One critic wrote,
"Everyone should hear this album to know what horrible music sounds
like." Another ended a sarcastic review, "Well done Chumbawamba. Now
sod off!" — hence the film's title.

According to Bruce, the group originally planned to release a
compilation of their videos until the Sex Pistols' "The Filth and the
Fury," Fugazi's "Instrument" and Radiohead's "Meeting People Is
Easy" inspired them to do a documentary: "Besides, our videos
aren't that good anyway."

"When we had the success with 'Tubthumping,' a lot of people thought
that was our first album. We wanted to let people know we had a huge
history," Bruce added. "And now when our kids think we were really
square, we can say, 'This is what I did for the punk war.' "

Chumbawamba will continue to show "Well Done. Now Sod Off" at film
festivals for the rest of the year. Next year they hope to broadcast
it on television overseas.

Chumbawamba, a.k.a. the original "Tubthumpers," have just hit stores with a new album titled "WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)."

The album features 22 new tracks including the first single, "She's Got All The Friends," and a rather interesting cover, as the group chose to rework the Bee Gees' 1967 song "New York Mining Disaster 1941," recorded long before the brothers Gibb donned white suits and went disco.

According to Chumbawamba guitarist Boff, he and the rest of the group really appreciate that particular song, since most people forget what the Bee Gees did in their pre-disco days.

"To me it's just like an English folk song with some political lyrics, and it's a beautiful tune and everything," Boff told the MTV Radio Network.

Boff admitted that he also likes the response the song evokes from fans and peers.

"I like people asking us, saying, 'Why the Bee Gees?'" he said. No word on any U.S. dates yet, but we'll keep you

The delightfully topical Chumbawamba will soon be back on the airwaves with a new album and a new bass player.
The group's follow-up to the hugely successful "Tubthumper" (see "Top 25 Albums '98: Big Sellers, By The Numbers") will be titled "WYSIWYG," nerd-talk for "What You See Is What You Get."
The 22-track CD is scheduled to be released on April 4, and the first single, "She's Got All The Friends," will be shipped to radio on February 22.
A spokesperson for the band's label told MTV News that the single will not be issued commercially on this side of the ocean, meaning U.S. fans will not be privy to the overtly controversial European b-side, a tongue-in-cheek ditty called "Passenger List For Doomed Flight #1721." The track reportedly lists all the people the band would like to see in a plane crash, including U2's Bono, "Ally McBeal," Bill Gates, and Bill Clinton. According to the spokesperson, there
are no plans to release the track in the U.S. in the foreseeable future.
Chumbawamba has also announced that seven-year veteran Paul 'PJ' Greco, who played bass, harmonica, and accordion, has left the band and will be replaced by longtime studio cohort Neil Ferguson. Ferguson is described as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter ,and singer whose duties have previously included live and studio engineering for the band. He's credited with guitar and keyboards as well as production and engineering on "Tubthumper."
Greco apparently moved to Koln, Germany, at the end of 1998 when Chumbawamba went on a hiatus and subsequently became involved in musical projects he has now opted to stick with full time. According to a post on the group's official Web site, there were "no big arguments, no legal wranglings, no musical differences, no time in rehab and no exposes in the Sunday papers, just a man on a mission to make his own music."
Meanwhile, the new CD, "WYSIWYG," will include
extensive artwork and liner notes as well as the following tracks:

"I'm With Stupid"
"Shake Baby Shake"
"Pass It Along"
"Hey, Hey We're The Junkies"
"The Health & Happiness Show"
"I'm Coming Out"
"I'm In Trouble Again"
"Social Dogma"
"WWW Dot"
"New York Mining Disaster"
"I'm Not Sorry, I Was Having Fun"
"Jesus In Vegas"
"The Standing Still"
"She's Got All The Friends"
"Ladies For Compassionate Lynching"
"Celebration, Florida"
"Moses With A Gun"
"The Physical Impossibility"
"Smart Bomb"
"Knickers"
"Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie"
"Dumbing Down"

Chumbawamba vocalist/percussionist Alice Nutter has been forced out of a few dates with the band after injuring her head in a series of incidents on the group's current European tour.

A spokesperson for the band said that the injuries that forced Nutter to miss the band's turn at Britain's WOMAD festival last Friday were first incurred when the singer was caught up in a riot in Italy. Nutter was attending a rally to protest the death of two imprisoned anarchist activists, and soon found herself in the thick of a full-blown riot. Nutter claims that she was struck in the head by Italian police officers, and was then treated at a local hospital.

The singer then returned to the band's tour bus, where she re-injured her face when she fell from her bunk. Nutter returned to the hospital for further treatment, and then decided to not get back on the bus and opted to stay at a hotel for the night. While there, a sneeze caused even more damage as the force of the blow broke
blood vessels in Nutter's eye, which came bulging out of its socket. Nutter then forced it back in, and returned to her home in Leeds.

After all was said and done, Nutter had compound facial fractures and nerve damage, and it remains to be seen how long she will be out of commission. It is known that Nutter will sit out at least one show on August 7 in Budapest.

So why did California Congressional candidate and outrageously outspoken Republican Bob Dornan adopt a song performed by his political polar opposites in Chumbawamba as his campaign anthem? To prove that the media's coverage of politics is missing the mark, claims his campaign spokesperson.

Mark Dornan, son of the candidate and a central figure in his election effort, told MTV News that his camp picked the song as a "sociopolitical experiment" to illustrate that the coverage surrounding Dornan's race against Loretta Sanchez-Brixey is too far from the issues.

"We were getting frustrated because it was all about personalities," the younger Dornan told MTV News of their reasons for staging the experiment. He also noted that media outlets that had ignored the race "came out of the woodwork" once the campaign adopted the Chumbawamba song.

"The media bought it hook, line, and sinker," he said of the avalanche of press that followed after the group's hit "Tubthumping"
appeared on Dornan's official website.

The younger Dornan claimed that most reporters who contacted him about the story knew more about the political stance of Chumbawamba than the policies of the man running for Congress.

As we first reported earlier this week (see "Chumbawamba Gives Stamp Of Disapproval To 'Tubthumping' Politician"), Dornan's use of the song provoked a less than enthusiastic response from Chumbawamba, who threatened to go the Internet sabotage route in stopping Dornan from using the song.

The campaign has removed the song and, claiming that their use of it provoked the desired effect from the media, the younger Dornan says that the campaign will not bring it back.

Adopting an anarchist's anthem as a Congressional candidate's theme song?

That's what California Congressional candidate Bob Dornan did when he appropriated Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" [800k QuickTime] in his race for the House of Representatives.

The Republican candidate (who served in the House from 1976 to 1997, except for a brief period in 1983, and spent a good deal of that run openly lambasting the Clinton administration) had been using the song on his official website... that is until the band caught wind of it.

"An American journalist rung us up and interviewed us about it and said that Bob Dornan was using Chumbawamba's music which, in a way, is completely ridiculous because we have nothing in common with the man," Chumbawamba percussionist/vocalist Alice Nutter told MTV News. "He's an ignorant bigot. But in a way, it's really good because it means we get a chance to take on right wing America. So ever since we found out he's been using it, we've been info-bombing his site so that it crashes on a regular basis. We don't believe in stopping him by taking him to the courts and putting him through the copyright laws. That would be deadly dull. You know, if we're going to go to war with Bob Dornan, then it has got to be an ideological war. It's not all right to slag black people off. It's not all right to slag gay people off. It's not all right to be a homophobic, racist bigot and a far off religious nut. It's quite good in a way because it means that everything we hate, we get to take a pot shot at." [400k Audio]

For the record, Dornan prides himself on his civil rights record, and speaks with pride about his involvement with the American civil rights movement in the 1960s, including his support of Martin Luther King.

While Dornan's site is still up and running, his camp has removed the Chumbawamba hit from the site, though a spokesperson
for Dornan's camp told MTV News that they plan on bringing the song back soon. As for why a Republican Congressional hopeful would adopt a song performed by a collective of anarchists, Dornan's camp says that the seemingly resilient message of "Tubthumping" makes it a "perfect song" for the candidate.

"Like a lot of people, he's probably just heard the song at sports events and thought, 'Hey that's what I'm about, getting knocked down and getting up again,'" vocalist Dunstan Bruce said. "That's the whole thing about that song, because a lot of people do just think that it's a drinking song, it's a song that relates to a lot of people. It's always given us the opportunity to explain what it's really about, what we're really about, because a lot of people probably still don't know what Chumbawamba are about. [200k Audio] So we try to give them the opportunity to say we're a bunch of anarchists, who don't agree with government, who don't
agree with specifically what Bob Dornan is going on about. And that's a great position for us to be in, and the fact of the matter is at the end of the day he looks a lot stupider than he actually is." Visitors to Dornan's site (at www.bobdornan.com) will also find the "Imperial Death March" from the "Star Wars" soundtrack in areas of his site devoted to his opponent, Loretta Sanchez-Brixey, and a midi file of a "America The Beautiful." Apparently, "Tubthumping" will soon rejoin them.

"You know what's funny is that the far right quite often aligns itself with anarchist ideas," Nutter added. "It says, 'Well, I believe that the state should have less power; I believe that the individual should have more power.' But the difference between us and Bob Dornan is that we don't believe the state should have less power so some people could get rich at the expense of others. You know, we believe in social responsibility. We believe in this idea that people deserve better lives, not more
ignorant racist bigotry. So we have nothing in common with Bob Dornan, you know he's not a libertarian and we're not far right idiots."
