HOLLYWOOD — Hollywood Boulevard got a shot of testosterone Thursday when dozens of football players and one hulking California governor joined the nearly all-male cast of "The Longest Yard" for the movie's premiere.

(Click here for photos from the premiere.)

"It's not a big lesbian movie at all, but if you like men, this movie's for you," Chris Rock joked as he surveyed the red carpet, where Michael Irvin was putting former Dallas Cowboys teammate Emmitt Smith in a headlock.

Rock and co-stars Adam Sandler and Nelly were dwarfed by professional athletes as they entered Grauman's Chinese Theatre, but according to some of the football players in the movie, the actors were more physical than they look.

"A lot of these actors went to [practice twice a day] for a couple of weeks ... and they did all right," said linebacker-turned-actor Brian Bosworth.

"I walked on the set one day and we were shooting baskets," recalled Irvin, in a pinstripe suit. "I was like, 'Oh, there's Nelly, I'm gonna go show this hip-hop guy what an athlete really looks like.' And Nelly actually won the game. There's no doubt in my mind he could've played in the NFL, and I'm not joking. He's that much of a talent."

And sports and music apparently aren't his only talents. "The Longest Yard," a remake of a 1974 movie starring Burt Reynolds (who also stars in the new version and came out for the premiere), is the rapper's first big-screen movie (following the direct-to-video "Snipes"), but his co-stars said he came off like a seasoned veteran.

"He has some heavy scenes in the movie and he kicked ass on 'em," said Sandler, casually dressed in a jacket and T-shirt. "And every time it gets to him in the movie, girls scream! Besides being a great actor, he's the greatest guy to hang with. He knows so much about sports."

"The kid's definitely got chops," "Saturday Night Live" alum Tracy Morgan added.
Chris Rock has never been one to shy away from controversy, so naturally his fourth album, Never Scared, finds him talking about sex, parenthood, marriage, a new generation of rap music, Michael Jackson, Lil Jon, George W. Bush and Jermaine Jackson. The release, taken largely from his 2004 HBO comedy special of the same name, also includes a DVD with behind-the-scenes footage.

They Might Be Giants — who have taught us such valuable lessons as the relationship between Istanbul and Constantinople and how James K. Polk came to be president — are now showing fans young and old how to make learning the ABCs fun. Featuring songs like "C Is for Conifers," "The Vowel Family" and "Go for G!," Here Come the ABCs imparts some more useful information than, say, "old New York was once New Amsterdam."

L.A. ska-punk outfit Goldfinger release their first studio album since 2002's Open Your Eyes. Founding member and singer John Feldmann returns to for Disconnection Notice after taking some time to write and/or produce for bands including Good Charlotte, the Used and Story of the Year.

Hey, do you live in Texas? Were you at the Bright Eyes show in Fort Worth on Monday? If you weren't, then you were probably busy lassoing steers and forcing yourself upon Native Americans — at least according to Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst, you were. According to a review of Bright Eyes' show at the Ridglea Theater in The Dallas Morning News, Oberst "drained another bottle of beer" and then began bashing the Lone Star State before a shocked audience. Crunk Juice, the long-awaited LP from Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz, is finally ready to roll.

Due November 16, the album features the song "Lovers & Friends," which re-teams Jon with Usher and Ludacris (see " 'Yeah!' Follow-Up On The Way, Says Lil Jon"). Other guests on the album include R. He might want to leave the R. Kelly jokes at home.

Chris Rock, who has been brutal to celebrities as the host of several past MTV Video Music Awards shows, has been tapped to host the somewhat more conservative Academy Awards.

"I am a huge fan of Chris Rock," Gil Cates, the producer of the Oscars telecast, said in a statement Thursday (October 14). "He always makes me laugh and he always has something interesting to say. Chris represents the best of the new generation of comics. Having him host the Oscars is terrific."

The Academy Awards ceremony, now in its 77th year, will be broadcast live February 27 on ABC.

Rock, whose fourth comedy album, Never Scared, was released in August (see "Chris Rock Spoofs 'Hey Ya!': 'It's Like Public Enemy — But Funny' "), is currently shooting a remake of "The Longest Yard" (see "Nelly To Join Adam Sandler, Chris Rock In 'The Longest Yard' "). The comedy is due in May, the same month the animated "Madagascar," featuring Rock's voice, hits theaters.

In August, Rock said he preferred not to host the Video Music Awards every year to avoid making jokes about the same things (see "Chris Rock Would Have Hosted The VMAs This Year, If ..." ).

Chris Rock has beef with MTV.

"If they would've told me this year's [Video Music Awards are] in Miami, I wouldn't have done them last year. I would've waited and done this year," a comically disgruntled Rock said recently. "But those bastards didn't say anything. It's gonna be crazy in Miami!"

Well, Rock, you could always make an 11th-hour return. After all, the show has no host this year.

"I never do it two years in a row," he answered. "The music doesn't change that much from year to year, so if you're hosting two years in a row, it's like hosting the same show. And I gotta rejuvenate. Hopefully they'll want me to host the show every two or three years, but I like a little foreplay, the anticipation. You don't just jump into it."

Rock never completely steps away from the VMAs, however. During years he doesn't host, he still submits a few jokes to the writers. "I think I've gotten a joke in [the show] the past five or six years," he said.

One joke that has raised a few eyebrows is the controversial song "Crackers," which is from Rock's latest album, Never Scared. (The album is due Tuesday, although he's quick to point out, "There's bootlegs out there. Go get a bootleg.")

The song is a satirical observation of racism against blacks set to the tune of "Hey Ya!" (see "Chris Rock Spoofs 'Hey Ya!': 'It's Like Public Enemy — But Funny' "). Because "Crackers" is a parody, Rock was not required to get Outkast to sign off on the song. He did call Andre 3000 though, but has yet to hear back.

"I just want him to listen to it. I think he would think it was funny," Rock said. "I love Outkast. I had them on my show before all this super-hype stuff. Before David Letterman, before all the white people got hip to it, I had him on my show."

The comedian is currently in Santa Fe, New Mexico, shooting "The Longest Yard" remake". "Me and Adam, we've been friends for 20 years, so we kinda have a cool chemistry going on," he said. "I think this is gonna be my funniest movie. Me and Adam are really funny together."

After "The Longest Yard," Rock plans to take his Black Ambition Tour to Europe, Australia and South Africa. He's also writing another film (although he's not talking about it yet) and notes that he's not currently deluged with movie offers.

"Tom Cruise points to a film and it comes to him. Will Smith points to a film and it will come," he said. "I beg, — and occasionally they come to me. 'Please, please, Will Smith, say no!' 'Please Jim Carrey, say no to "Bruce Almighty"! You must have something else you could be doing!' That's me and movies."

Chris Rock holds the crown.

Yes, he is considered by many to be the funniest man on the planet, but the Brooklyn native was literally holding a crown in his hands while sitting on the set of "Crackers," his latest music video. In the clip, which was shot in his hometown about two weeks ago, Rock not only jacks the music and melody of Outkast's "Hey Ya!," he also re-creates the video, adding his own irreverent stamp.

The song presents a satirical observation of racism against blacks over the centuries, all sung to the happy-go-lucky melody of Andre 3000's hit.

"It's like a Public Enemy record — but funny," Rock said, later clarifying to say that although the subject matter is serious, the song is a send-up. Some of the lyrics include, "You raped my grandma/ Ooh, you raped my grandma/ My grandma and great-grandma/ You kept raping them/ Aah, AH, ah, AH-aaaal!"

"There's nothing funny about rape, but there's something funny about it in the context of the song," he said. "The song 'Hey Ya!' just seems so happy, so any depressing lyric with that same melody seemed funny to me."

Rock, wearing a wig that gave him the appearance of having a long black perm, shrugged when asked how he came up with the concept for the song. "I don't know, the same way I come up with everything. 'You know what would sound funny? If they were saying 'Crackers' instead of 'Hey Ya!' I didn't expect for this to ever get played, but the record company was like, 'That's a single.' So here we are." The funnyman said he wants to premiere "Crackers" via the mixtape circuit, and thinks he'll give the record to either DJ Kay Slay or the Green Lantern.

CULVER CITY, California — In what is likely to be the smallest backfield former NFL linebackers Brian Bosworth and Bill Romanowski have ever faced, Nelly will play the running back to Adam Sandler's quarterback in the upcoming remake of "The Longest Yard."

Fortunately, Sandler's team of inmates, who take on a team of prison guards, will have an NFL star of their own in former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, as well as quite a few studs from another sport.

"A lot of wrestlers — [Bill 'Extreme'] Goldberg, Steve Austin, Kevin Nash — [will face off against the prison guards]," Sandler said Friday at the office of his Happy Madison production company. "I'd say 98 percent of the cast can beat the sh-- out of me. Cloris Leachman is the only one I could take."

Veteran actress Leachman, who also co-stars in Sandler's other upcoming movie, "Spanglish" (see "Adam Sandler Has A Hard Time Talking 'Spanglish' "), will play the secretary for the prison's sadistic warden, played by James Cromwell.

"Do you know who's awesome who's in it?" Sander adds. "David Patrick Kelly from 'The Warriors' — the guy who clicks the bottles."

Chris Rock also joins Sandler and Nelly on the prisoner's team, which Burt Reynolds, who played the Sandler part in the 1974 original, is coaching. "He was nice enough to say, 'Go ahead, young man, throw a football,' " Sandler said.

Snoop Dogg was also hoping to co-star (see "Snoop Dogg In Talks To Star With Adam Sandler In 'Longest Yard' Remake"), but will be on the road with Linkin Park and Korn during filming.

The cast, which also includes Terry Crews ("White Chicks") and William Fichtner ("Pearl Harbor"), is convening next week in New Mexico to shoot the movie under the guidance of "50 First Dates"/"Anger Management" director Peter Segal. "The Longest Yard" will be released Memorial Day weekend in 2005, Sandler said.

Meanwhile, Sandler's production company is midway through shooting the sequel to Rob Schneider's "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo," tentatively titled "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo."

"There's a lot of titles being tossed around, 'Deuce Bigalow: The Passion of the Mangina' is one," Sander said. "Schnieder's over in Amsterdam right now, hopefully not eating too much hash and making his movie."

Sandler's fifth album, Shhh ... Don't Tell, will be released this week. The first single, the techno song "Secret," is climbing the dance music charts.

"In Florida, they play that stuff a lot and I was visiting my mom and dad and I was driving in the car and listening to that style of music," Sandler said. "I called my machine and I said, 'Gotta do a song like this.' "

BEVERLY HILLS, California — Michael Moore is convinced "Fahrenheit 9/11" is the perfect summer movie for the MTV audience to check out.

"The film is full of Butt-heads," the director boasted Tuesday outside the premiere of the controversial documentary. "It's like invasion of the Butt-heads. They all go to D.C. and then another Butt-head, me, comes to try and save the day. And there's a tender love story somewhere in the midst of that."

That tender love story turned out to be a farce, but the film community, which turned out in droves for back-to-back screenings, was more than satisfied with the Butt-heads — Moore received standing ovations for the film, which is intensely critical of President Bush and his administration.

A staggering number of celebrities came out to support the Oscar-winning director, including the Osbournes (minus Ozzy), Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres, Larry David, Jodie Foster, Viggo Mortensen, Diane Lane, Spike Jonze, John Singleton, Michael Bay and David Duchovny and Téa Leoni, who attended the early screening and reception at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Some (presumably those with Lakers tickets), including Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Matthew Perry, Jack Black, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Rock, Jessica Alba, Sharon Stone and Billy Crystal, caught a later screening at the Laemmle Music Hall across the street.

"I like his stuff, and a chance to see it early and see it for free? Count me in," said director Kevin Smith ("Mallrats," "Clerks"), one of the few who talked to reporters, adding that the film is being released at a bad time for Bush. "It seems like so many people are waiting to see an administration change that you don't even need this film to push it over the edge."

Marisa Tomei, who attended the early screening, said she hopes the film will impact the election, an opinion seemingly shared by many of her peers.

Moore, however, said that was never his intention.

"I'm hoping I'll have an impact on people going out and voting, but that's not why I made the movie," he said. "I made the movie because I want people to go to the movie and have a good time. If they decide to see my movie, I want them to leave going, 'Holy moly, that was something!' "

Part of the entertainment of "Fahrenheit 9/11," of course, is in the ridiculing of Bush. "This film displaces all authority," Moore said, laughing. "So if you're one of those people with a healthy disrespect for authority, this is your movie."

Moore would be more than happy, though, if the documentary did change the minds of Bush supporters or those on the fence. "I read one review where a critic said any swing voter who enters the theater swinging will leave the theater having swung," he said. "I kind of like that."

Before both screenings, Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein introduced the movie and commented on Disney backing out of releasing the film, joking that by putting it out themselves, he and brother Bob Weinstein could be looking for new jobs soon (see "Disney Blocks Michael Moore's Anti-Bush Flick").

After the long ovation that followed the film, Moore told the audience he was optimistic about the election in the wake of a recent book tour that took him to several dozen cities. "There has been a shift in this country. The average American is finally beginning to figure it out. We were duped [into supporting the invasion of Iraq]," he said.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" opens in theaters June 25 and is expected to reach 500 to 1,000 theatres nationwide, a high number for a documentary (see "Michael Moore's Embattled 'Fahrenheit 9/11' To Be Released In June").
