Big Punisher, Mya, and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies will find themselves hobnobbing with the wrestling world's finest when they perform at a party to launch Wrestlemania XV later this month.
Five other big name acts are also expected to be added to the bill, which is set for Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Convention Center on March 27, the night before Wrestlemania XV. The kick-off party will be broadcast during a one hour special airing on the USA Network at 10 p.m. Eastern time.
Two as-yet-unannounced musical acts will also perform at Wrestlemania itself, which is slated for March 28 at Philadelphia's First Union Center.
In addition to the music, there will of course be some wrestling as well, as Stone Cold Steve Austin will take on The Rock on a card that also includes Vince McMahon, Mankind, the Undertaker, and female wrestler Sable (who will be featured in the April issue "Playboy"). The big event will air live on pay-per-view at 8 p.m. Eastern time and tickets cost $80.

As odd as it may sound, the current neo-swing revival may soon introduce a new notion into the collective pop consciousness: the swing video cliche.

In an effort to skirt the suddenly familiar images of cigars, cocktails, and jitterbuggers, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies tapped video visionary Jamie Caliri (the man behind surreal clips like Marcy Playground's "Sex And Candy" and Morphine's "Early To Bed") for their latest clip, "Brown Derby Jump."

"We got a lot of treatments for the video but we really didn't want to have something that was like: Hey get swing!," Daddies frontman Steve Perry told MTV News of the band's preparation for the new clip. "You know there's going to be like 2 million videos of the same thing, and we wanted to be more about the song [500k Quicktime] than about 'Hey, this is something that all you cats should be digging!' That's pathetic, you know, so we decided
not to have martinis or swing dancers... we had actually swing dancers, the shadow silhouette sort of like on our album cover, but we didn't have anything that would really hit people over the head with, 'Hey we're a swing band, get it?'"

The product of this bold new union between the Daddies and Caliri recently hit the MTV airwaves, and has already found a few fans within the band itself.

"The best part of the video though is a classic car that's covered with pastries and a really beautiful woman standing next to it," guitarist Jason Moss said. "I don't know what it means, but it's a pastry covered car and it's great." [450k Quicktime]

"It really is," Perry added. "It's more surreal and it's beautifully shot. It looks really good."

Of course, the band didn't do too bad the first time around with its breakthrough video for "Zoot Suit Riot." That clip earned the
band an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best New Artist in a Video.

With their "Zoot Suit Riot" album a bona fide top 20 hit and a frenetic slot on this summer's Warped tour, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies are doing something right, but is it swing?
The group's frontman, Steve Perry, recently sat down with MTV News and addressed the burning question, "Are their style and music really swing, or just a neo-swing retro move?"
"We're a hybrid," Perry said, "we're not trying to be a nostalgia band, really. It's sort of pathetic to just kind of ape the styles of yesteryear or something like that. What we're trying to do is create, to marry the energy of punk rock to the beautiful swing sound and groove of swing [400k QuickTime] -- just to see if it makes any sense, you know."
Regardless of whether it makes sense or not, the band's clip for "Zoot Suit Riot" has earned the Daddies an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best New Artist in a Video.
Cherry Poppin' Daddies will be headlining its own tour
starting in October.

Following the lead of the H.O.R.D.E. tour, this year's Vans Warped tour has also vowed to kick in money to help relief effort in areas of Florida ravaged by forest fires.

Warped (which this year features Rancid, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Bad Religion, the Deftones, and a host of others) has announced plans to donate a percentage of the money raised at its August 8 stop in Orlando to the American Red Cross Florida State Relief Funds. The tour will kick in a portion of the money raised through ticket and merchandise sales on that date as well as funds raised at a silent auction set for the tour's August 1 stop in New York.

According to CNN, the fires that have been raging since May have now burned more than 480,000 acres of land and caused more than $276 million worth of damage.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Blues Traveler frontman John Popper pledged that money raised at the August 19 date of his H.O.R.D.E. tour would go towards the Florida Fire
Emergency Relief Fund (see "John Popper Talks About H.O.R.D.E.'s Vow To Aid Fire-Ravaged Florida").

To mark the passing and legendary career of Frank Sinatra, two of the labels he recorded for during the golden age of his career have joined forces to remaster and reissue his landmark recordings.

Next week, Capitol and Reprise Records will begin releasing 20-bit digitally remastered versions of Sinatra's classic recordings from the 50s and 60s, an era in which his theme-driven albums paved the way for the idea of the concept album.

The reissues will each bear the words "Entertainer of the Century" on the packaging, a title that was to be bestowed upon him by President Clinton this week.
The moniker reflects Sinatra's enduring influence, which is a topic we broached with modern-day swing revivalists the Cherry Poppin' Daddies when the band played last weekend's HFStival in Washington, D.C.

Not only that, he was direct. There was no screwing around with him. He just, 'boom,' put it right on the table, and there's not much of that in culture or music right now. There's a lot of irony and playing around and winking and stuff, and that's not how it was back then. That's not how Sinatra was either... or heart, as opposed to soul, you know. There's heart, you know. Where's the heart (today)?"

The Cherry Poppin' Daddies will continue to make the rounds on the radio station-sponsored festival circuit before joining this summer's Vans Warped tour.

October 21 [14:00 EDT] -- The Cherry Poppin' Daddies have been swingin' since 1989, when they were spawned in Eugene, Oregon by writer/singer/producer/guitarist Steve Perry (not to be confused with the Journey-man of the same name).

The Daddies' seven other members are guitarist Jason Moss, bassist Daniel Schmid, drummer Tim Donahue, keyboardist Dustin Lanker, trumpeter Dana Heitman, and saxophonists Sean Flannery and Ian Early.

The Daddies have been touring incessantly for eight years earning their swing stripes.

They would prefer not being lumped in with the current neo-retro fad; the Daddies were playing swing in the Pacific Northwest when grunge was all the rage and flannel-clad audiences didn't know what to make of them. Nevertheless, swing is currently in vogue due to movies like "Swingers" and bands like The Squirrel Nut Zippers; both have helped lay the popular ground on which the Cherry Poppin' Daddies are now grooving.

Their new LP, "Zoot Suit
Riot," is a compendium of ten "hits" from their three former records plus four new tracks for their debut release on Mojo Records. The Daddies have formed a sympatico touring relationship with ska acts like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, and Less Than Jake.

Perry's favorite influences include big band greats Louis Prima, Fletcher Henderson, and Count Basie, otherwise known as the musical papas of the Daddies-O.
